RESUMEN

Organic combustion products generated by the lunar module descent engine, which burns a 1:1 mixture of unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine fuel and nitrogen tetroxide oxidizer, have been analyzed. The major gaseous combustion products found were ammonia, water, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitric oxide. The minor products were acetylene, hydrogen cyanide, ethylene, formaldehyde, propadiene, ketene, cyanous acid, hydrazoic acid, various methylamines, acetaldehyde, methyl nitrite, formic acid, nitrous acid, butadiyne, nitrilohydrazines, nitromethane, and nitrosohydrazines with other oxidized derivatives of unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine and hydrazine. The ion intensities of the various species in all mass spectra were estimated as the following concentrations: the gases (NH(3), H(2)O, CO, NO, O(2), CO(2), and NO(2)), 87.7 percent; compounds of C, H, and O, 6.0 percent; and compounds of C, H, and N (with traces of O), 5.8 percent.

RESUMEN

The Lunar Receiving Laboratory will be the permanent depository of a portion of the collection of lunar samples; it will safeguard the collection, providing continuing security and ensuring scientific integrity. In carrying out the time-dependent experiments and continuing functions of the laboratory, NASA will rely on visiting expert scientists supplementing a relatively small resident staff; outside scientists will be relied upon for most investigations and detailed analyses of samples. It is believed that the designed procedures and facilities provided will ensure the maximum scientific return from the Apollo Program in the way of information from lunar samples.

RESUMEN

Organogenic elements, mainly carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur are present in the particulate material and in a breccia rock from Tranquillity Base in amounts ranging from 5 to 4200 parts per million. The major compounds of carbon released by heating are carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide; the former predominates. Small amounts of other compounds of carbon have also been observed. Sulfur can be released as hydrogen sulfide by treatment with acid. The carbon isotopic delta(13L)C values are definitely nonterrestrial (+ 13 to + 18.5 per mil).

RESUMEN

This randomized, prospective study assessed postoperative pain control in 119 patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty. Group 1 (59 patients) received scheduled, around-the-clock, oral opioids and group 2 (60 patients) received oral opioids on an as-needed basis. Both groups had parenteral opioids available for breakthrough pain. The average scores for group 1 were lower than group 2. Differences were significant in sensory scores (AM day 1; AM and PM day 2), affective scores (PM day 2), total pain (PM day 2), visual analog scale (PM day 2), and present pain intensity index (AM day 1; PM day 2). Group 1 averaged 2.05 breakthrough pain doses and group 2 averaged 3.47 doses (P=.003), an average savings of 17.2% of the cost of pain medications during the first 2 postoperative days. The results indicate that scheduled, around-the-clock, oral opioids are an effective treatment regimen for postoperative pain control in total joint arthroplasty patients.

RESUMEN

The fragmentation of two penicillins, ampicillin and amoxicillin, and their principal metabolites has been studied by a combination of liquid chromatography/thermospray mass spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry. A high-resolution tandem mass spectrometer was used to obtain chemical ionization, fast-atom bombardment, and collision-induced dissociation mass spectra. Structural information and fragmentation mechanisms have been deduced from ions in the mass and collision spectra. This knowledge is useful in the analysis and identification of metabolites of ampicillin and related drugs in human body fluids.
