RESUMEN

The Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover is traversing a sequence of stratified sedimentary rocks in Gale crater that contain varied eolian, fluviodeltaic, and lake deposits, with phyllosilicates, iron oxides, and sulfate salts. Here, we report the chloride salt distribution along the rover traverse. Chlorine is detected at low levels (<3 wt.%) in soil and rock targets with multiple MSL instruments. Isolated fine-scale observations of high chlorine (up to ≥15 wt.% Cl), detected using the ChemCam instrument, are associated with elevated Na2O and interpreted as halite grains or cements in bedrock. Halite is also interpreted at the margins of veins and in nodular, altered textures. We have not detected halite in obvious evaporitic layers. Instead, its scattered distribution indicates that chlorides emplaced earlier in particular members of the Murray formation were remobilized and reprecipitated by later groundwaters within Murray formation mudstones and in diagenetic veins and nodules.

Mars' sedimentary rock record preserves information on geological (and potential astrobiological) processes that occurred on the planet billions of years ago. The Curiosity rover is exploring the lower reaches of Mount Sharp, in Gale crater on Mars. A traverse from Vera Rubin ridge to Glen Torridon has allowed Curiosity to examine a lateral transect of rock strata laid down in a martian lake ~3.5 billion years ago. We report spatial differences in the mineralogy of time-equivalent sedimentary rocks <400 meters apart. These differences indicate localized infiltration of silica-poor brines, generated during deposition of overlying magnesium sulfate-bearing strata. We propose that destabilization of silicate minerals driven by silica-poor brines (rarely observed on Earth) was widespread on ancient Mars, because sulfate deposits are globally distributed.

The Curiosity rover's exploration of rocks and soils in Gale crater has provided diverse geochemical and mineralogical data sets, underscoring the complex geological history of the region. We report the crystalline, clay mineral, and amorphous phase distributions of four Gale crater rocks from an 80-m stratigraphic interval. The mineralogy of the four samples is strongly influenced by aqueous alteration processes, including variations in water chemistries, redox, pH, and temperature. Localized hydrothermal events are evidenced by gray hematite and maturation of amorphous SiO2 to opal-CT. Low-temperature diagenetic events are associated with fluctuating lake levels, evaporative events, and groundwater infiltration. Among all mudstones analyzed in Gale crater, the diversity in diagenetic processes is primarily captured by the mineralogy and X-ray amorphous chemistry of the drilled rocks. Variations indicate a transition from magnetite to hematite and an increase in matrix-associated sulfates suggesting intensifying influence from oxic, diagenetic fluids upsection. Furthermore, diagenetic fluid pathways are shown to be strongly affected by unconformities and sedimentary transitions, as evidenced by the intensity of alteration inferred from the mineralogy of sediments sampled adjacent to stratigraphic contacts.

The o,p'-isomer of the insecticide DDT when injected into neonatal female rats significantly advanced puberty, induced persistent vaginal estrus after a period of normal estrous cycles, and caused the ovaries to develop follicular cysts and a reduced number of corpora lutea. The uterotropic response to administered estradiol was reduced, and the female pattern of mating behavior was slightly disturbed. Residues of DDT in ovarian, brain, and adipose tissues of the adult animals were the same in both treated and control groups.

In 2012, NASA's Curiosity rover landed on Mars to assess its potential as a habitat for past life and investigate the paleoclimate record preserved by sedimentary rocks inside the ~150-kilometer-diameter Gale impact crater. Geological reconstructions from Curiosity rover data have revealed an ancient, habitable lake environment fed by rivers draining into the crater. We synthesize geochemical and mineralogical data from lake-bed mudstones collected during the first 1300 martian solar days of rover operations in Gale. We present evidence for lake redox stratification, established by depth-dependent variations in atmospheric oxidant and dissolved-solute concentrations. Paleoclimate proxy data indicate that a transition from colder to warmer climate conditions is preserved in the stratigraphy. Finally, a late phase of geochemical modification by saline fluids is recognized.

The Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover performed coordinated measurements to examine the textures and compositions of aeolian sands in the active Bagnold dune field. The Bagnold sands are rounded to subrounded, very fine to medium sized (~45-500 µm) with ≥6 distinct grain colors. In contrast to sands examined by Curiosity in a dust-covered, inactive bedform called Rocknest and soils at other landing sites, Bagnold sands are darker, less red, better sorted, have fewer silt-sized or smaller grains, and show no evidence for cohesion. Nevertheless, Bagnold mineralogy and Rocknest mineralogy are similar with plagioclase, olivine, and pyroxenes in similar proportions comprising >90% of crystalline phases, along with a substantial amorphous component (35% ± 15%). Yet Bagnold and Rocknest bulk chemistry differ. Bagnold sands are Si enriched relative to other soils at Gale crater, and H2O, S, and Cl are lower relative to all previously measured Martian soils and most Gale crater rocks. Mg, Ni, Fe, and Mn are enriched in the coarse-sieved fraction of Bagnold sands, corroborated by visible/near-infrared spectra that suggest enrichment of olivine. Collectively, patterns in major element chemistry and volatile release data indicate two distinctive volatile reservoirs in Martian soils: (1) amorphous components in the sand-sized fraction (represented by Bagnold) that are Si-enriched, hydroxylated alteration products and/or H2O- or OH-bearing impact or volcanic glasses and (2) amorphous components in the fine fraction (<40 µm; represented by Rocknest and other bright soils) that are Fe, S, and Cl enriched with low Si and adsorbed and structural H2O.

The meeting included 18 recognized experts who brought a wealth of experience and knowledge to the topics under review. Eight selected topics were addressed, with the key issues being briefly presented before an in-depth discussion. Presented here is the executive summary and conclusions from this meeting.

The landforms of northern Gale crater on Mars expose thick sequences of sedimentary rocks. Based on images obtained by the Curiosity rover, we interpret these outcrops as evidence for past fluvial, deltaic, and lacustrine environments. Degradation of the crater wall and rim probably supplied these sediments, which advanced inward from the wall, infilling both the crater and an internal lake basin to a thickness of at least 75 meters. This intracrater lake system probably existed intermittently for thousands to millions of years, implying a relatively wet climate that supplied moisture to the crater rim and transported sediment via streams into the lake basin. The deposits in Gale crater were then exhumed, probably by wind-driven erosion, creating Aeolis Mons (Mount Sharp).

We tested the hypothesis that neonatal treatment of rats with testosterone propionate (TP) or estradiol benzoate (EB) reduces the uterine responsiveness to estradiol and reduces the concentration of estrogen "receptor" before puberty, and that both of these events precede the onset of the persistent estrus syndrome. Thre-day-old female rats were injected with 100 mug EB, TP or sesame oil (controls) and at 23 and 31 days of age (before the onset of puberty) the uterine cytoplasmic content of specific 8S estradiol-binding protein was measured by sucrose density gradients. Binding by the nuclear fraction was also measured utilizing an exchange assay. In a subgroup of rats also treated neonatally, 2 mug/kg body weight estradiol-17beta was injected at 22 and 30 days of age and uterine wiights were measured as a test for uterine responsiveness. At 23 and 31 days of age the uterine cytoplasmic 8S estrogen "receptor" was significantly reduced in the EB-treated rats, but the uterotropic response to estradiol was blocked only in the 23 day old rats; the uterine response at 31 days was slightly, but not significantly, reduced. In contrast, neonatally administered TP had no effect on either the concentration of cytoplasmic estradiol-binding sites or uterine responsiveness. Nuclear binding of estradiol was unaffected by either TP or EB treatment in both age groups. In a futher experiment in rats ovariectomized at 9 days of age, those treated neonatally with EB had significantly smaller uteri than their untreated ovariectomized controls, thus providing indirect evidence for an extravarian factor affected by neonatal treatment. These data support the hypothesis that neonatal EB treatment may directly inhibit the synthesis or replenishment of the 8S estradiol "receptor" prior to the development of the persistent estrus syndrome (persistent vaginal estrus, anovulation and polycystic ovaries). A neonatally-induced neuroendocrine disorder affecting steroid secretion by the ovary or adrenal may also exist prepubertally to account for the uterine defects.

RESUMEN

This report notes the differences in the classification of the primary renal disease (PRD) used in different renal dialysis and transplant registries worldwide. The heterogeneity of coding systems complicates the comparative analysis of end-stage renal disease from different regions. Using data collected over two decades in the United States, Europe, and Australia/New Zealand, we present a method for reorganization of the classes of PRD that allows a straightforward comparison of retrospective data from these registries.

An FeBO3 single crystal was studied from 291 K up to the Neel temperature T(N) = 348.35 K by depth selective conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy in ultrahigh vacuum (10(-9) mbar). A new magnetic near-surface phase was found. Its thickness D diverges on approaching T(N) and gives a critical exponent for the correlation length of nu = 0.59(4). The phase boundary between the bulk and near-surface phase could be identified.

The main target for low flux hemodialyzers is an efficient low molecular weight solutes clearance. Such efficiency is largely dependent on the optimization of diffusion between blood and dialysis solution. The diffusion process can be impaired if there is a mismatch between blood and dialysate flow distribution in the dialyzer. Thus optimized flow distribution both in the blood and dialysate compartment becomes quintessential for the maximal efficiency of the diffusion process within the hemodialyzer. The present paper describes the distribution of the blood and dialysate flows in a new low flux polysulfone hollow fiber hemodialyzer characterized by a specific undulation of the fibers and a new cutting technology of the fibers for an improved micro-flow condition in the blood compartment headers. Twelve Diacap alpha Polysulfone LO PS 15 (1.5 sqm) (B. Braun Medizintechnologie, Melsungen Germany) were employed for the study. Six were analyzed in vitro and six were studied in vivo. Blood flow distribution was studied in vitro by dye injection in the blood compartment during experimental extracorporeal circulation utilizing human blood with hematocrit adjusted at 33%. Sequential images were obtained with a helical scanner in a fixed longitudinal section of the dialyzer 1 cm thick. Average and regional blood flow velocities were measured utilizing the reconstructed imaging sequence. The method allowed the calculation of single fiber blood flow (SF Qb) and the mass transfer zone (MTR) definition in digitally subtracted images. The patterns 20-10 and 40-30 were utilized. The same technology was used to evaluate flow distribution in the dialysate compartment after dye injection in the Hansen's connector. Regional dialysate flow was calculated in central and peripheral sample areas of 1 cm2. Six in vivo hemodialysis treatments on patients with end stage renal disease were performed at three different blood flow rates (250-350 and 450 ml/min) in order to measure urea, creatinine and phosphate clearance. Macroscopic and densitometrical analysis revealed that flow distribution was homogeneous in the blood compartment while in the dialysate compartment a slight difference between the peripheral and central regions in terms of flow velocity was observed. This however was not generating channeling phenomena. Urea creatinine and phosphate clearances were remarkably high and so were the Kt/V observed in all sessions, especially in relation to the studied blood flows. In conclusion, a significant blood to dialysate flow match with optimized countercurrent flow condition was observed in the studied hollow fiber hemodialyzers. Such optimization might be due both to the improved dialyzer design at the level of the blood header and to the specific fiber undulation that prevents dialysate channeling.

BACKGROUND: Graduated compression stockings (GCS) can effectively reduce postoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and their use is recommended by expert committees. However, it appears that GCS are not frequently used. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the customary use of GCS in surgical settings in the City of Hamburg, Germany, and to present evidence on the effectiveness of GCS. METHODS: A questionnaire on the use of thromboprophylaxis was sent to 48 surgeons in Hamburg. In addition, a comprehensive search for randomized-controlled trials, reviews, and meta-analyses indexed in MEDLINE (1984-06/2002) and the Cochrane Library (Issue 2, 2002) was conducted to show the effectiveness of GCS compared to nontreatment, other antithrombotic methods, or combined treatment. RESULTS: Of 48 surgeons 39 responded. Seven surgeons dismissed the use of GCS for thromboprophylaxis, 3 used GCS alone, 25 GCS in combination with heparin, and 4 used GCS only for patients at high risk. The review of the literature revealed the effectiveness of GCS in general and for abdominal surgical patients. Enhanced benefit is suggested when combining GCS with another intervention such as low-dose unfractionated heparin. Single application of GCS in orthopedic surgical or neurosurgical patients using venography showed no effect when compared to combined treatment of GCS and low molecular weight heparin. Trials with patients undergoing gynecological and urological surgeries are rare. There is a lack of trials investigating health-related quality of life and costs associated with the use of GCS. Complications are poorly reported. A determination as to the appropriate length of stockings is presently not possible. CONCLUSIONS: GCS should be integral part of DVT prophylaxis in surgical departments. Their ineffectiveness is likely in some surgical populations.

We determined radiogenic and cosmogenic noble gases in a mudstone on the floor of Gale Crater. A K-Ar age of 4.21 ± 0.35 billion years represents a mixture of detrital and authigenic components and confirms the expected antiquity of rocks comprising the crater rim. Cosmic-ray-produced (3)He, (21)Ne, and (36)Ar yield concordant surface exposure ages of 78 ± 30 million years. Surface exposure occurred mainly in the present geomorphic setting rather than during primary erosion and transport. Our observations are consistent with mudstone deposition shortly after the Gale impact or possibly in a later event of rapid erosion and deposition. The mudstone remained buried until recent exposure by wind-driven scarp retreat. Sedimentary rocks exposed by this mechanism may thus offer the best potential for organic biomarker preservation against destruction by cosmic radiation.

Opportunity has investigated in detail rocks on the rim of the Noachian age Endeavour crater, where orbital spectral reflectance signatures indicate the presence of Fe(+3)-rich smectites. The signatures are associated with fine-grained, layered rocks containing spherules of diagenetic or impact origin. The layered rocks are overlain by breccias, and both units are cut by calcium sulfate veins precipitated from fluids that circulated after the Endeavour impact. Compositional data for fractures in the layered rocks suggest formation of Al-rich smectites by aqueous leaching. Evidence is thus preserved for water-rock interactions before and after the impact, with aqueous environments of slightly acidic to circum-neutral pH that would have been more favorable for prebiotic chemistry and microorganisms than those recorded by younger sulfate-rich rocks at Meridiani Planum.

The Curiosity rover discovered fine-grained sedimentary rocks, which are inferred to represent an ancient lake and preserve evidence of an environment that would have been suited to support a martian biosphere founded on chemolithoautotrophy. This aqueous environment was characterized by neutral pH, low salinity, and variable redox states of both iron and sulfur species. Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, and phosphorus were measured directly as key biogenic elements; by inference, phosphorus is assumed to have been available. The environment probably had a minimum duration of hundreds to tens of thousands of years. These results highlight the biological viability of fluvial-lacustrine environments in the post-Noachian history of Mars.

Sedimentary rocks examined by the Curiosity rover at Yellowknife Bay, Mars, were derived from sources that evolved from an approximately average martian crustal composition to one influenced by alkaline basalts. No evidence of chemical weathering is preserved, indicating arid, possibly cold, paleoclimates and rapid erosion and deposition. The absence of predicted geochemical variations indicates that magnetite and phyllosilicates formed by diagenesis under low-temperature, circumneutral pH, rock-dominated aqueous conditions. Analyses of diagenetic features (including concretions, raised ridges, and fractures) at high spatial resolution indicate that they are composed of iron- and halogen-rich components, magnesium-iron-chlorine-rich components, and hydrated calcium sulfates, respectively. Composition of a cross-cutting dike-like feature is consistent with sedimentary intrusion. The geochemistry of these sedimentary rocks provides further evidence for diverse depositional and diagenetic sedimentary environments during the early history of Mars.

H2O, CO2, SO2, O2, H2, H2S, HCl, chlorinated hydrocarbons, NO, and other trace gases were evolved during pyrolysis of two mudstone samples acquired by the Curiosity rover at Yellowknife Bay within Gale crater, Mars. H2O/OH-bearing phases included 2:1 phyllosilicate(s), bassanite, akaganeite, and amorphous materials. Thermal decomposition of carbonates and combustion of organic materials are candidate sources for the CO2. Concurrent evolution of O2 and chlorinated hydrocarbons suggests the presence of oxychlorine phase(s). Sulfides are likely sources for sulfur-bearing species. Higher abundances of chlorinated hydrocarbons in the mudstone compared with Rocknest windblown materials previously analyzed by Curiosity suggest that indigenous martian or meteoritic organic carbon sources may be preserved in the mudstone; however, the carbon source for the chlorinated hydrocarbons is not definitively of martian origin.

RESUMEN

"Jake_M," the first rock analyzed by the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer instrument on the Curiosity rover, differs substantially in chemical composition from other known martian igneous rocks: It is alkaline (>15% normative nepheline) and relatively fractionated. Jake_M is compositionally similar to terrestrial mugearites, a rock type typically found at ocean islands and continental rifts. By analogy with these comparable terrestrial rocks, Jake_M could have been produced by extensive fractional crystallization of a primary alkaline or transitional magma at elevated pressure, with or without elevated water contents. The discovery of Jake_M suggests that alkaline magmas may be more abundant on Mars than on Earth and that Curiosity could encounter even more fractionated alkaline rocks (for example, phonolites and trachytes).
