RESUMEN

The field of reconstructive surgery encompasses a wide range of surgical procedures and regenerative approaches to treat various tissue types. Every surgical procedure is associated with the risk of surgical site infections, which are not only a financial burden but also increase patient morbidity. The surgical armamentarium in this area are biomaterials, particularly natural, biodegradable, biocompatible polymers, including the silk proteins fibroin (SF) and sericin (SS). Silk is known to be derived from silkworms and is mainly composed of 60-80% fibroin, which provides the structural form, and 15-35% sericin, which acts as a glue-like substance for the SF threads. Silk proteins possess most of the desired properties for biomedical applications, including biocompatibility, biodegradability, minimal immunogenicity, and tunable biomechanical behaviour. In an effort to alleviate or even prevent infections associated with the use of biomaterials in surgery, antibacterial/antimicrobial properties have been investigated in numerous studies. In this systematic review, the following question was addressed: Do silk proteins, SF and SS, possess an intrinsic antibacterial property and how could these materials be tailored to achieve such a property?

OBJECTIVE: Application of an optical method for the identification of antiresorptive drug-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (ARONJ). METHODS: We introduce shifted-excitation Raman difference spectroscopy followed by U-Net deep neural network refinement to determine bone tissue viability. The obtained results are validated through established histological methods. RESULTS: Discrimination of osteonecrosis from physiological tissues was evaluated at 119 distinct measurement loci in 40 surgical specimens from 28 patients. Mean Raman spectra were refined from 11,900 raw spectra, and characteristic peaks were assigned to their respective molecular origin. Then, following principal component and linear discriminant analyses, osteonecrotic lesions were distinguished from physiological tissue entities, such as viable bone, with a sensitivity, specificity, and overall accuracy of 100%. Moreover, bone mineral content, quality, maturity, and crystallinity were quantified, revealing an increased mineral-to-matrix ratio and decreased carbonate-to-phosphate ratio in ARONJ lesions compared to physiological bone. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrate feasibility with high classification accuracy in this collective. The differentiation was determined by the spectral features of the organic and mineral composition of bone. This merely optical, noninvasive technique is a promising candidate to ameliorate both the diagnosis and treatment of ARONJ in the future.

PURPOSE: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles detached from titanium dental implants by tribocorrosion can be phagocytosed by macrophages, releasing various proinflammatory cytokines at the implant sites that may trigger peri-implantitis. The study objective was to measure the association between peri-implantitis and the presence of non-allergy-related proinflammatory cytokines associated with TiO2 particles. METHODS: The investigators implemented a retrospective cross-sectional study and enrolled a sample of 60 subjects from a dental practice. Subjects were excluded if the plaque index was grade 3 (Silness and Löe). The predictor variable was a positive or negative TiO2 stimulation test, an in vitro macrophage proinflammatory response test. The outcome variable was peri-implantitis status defined as present or absent. Three groups were considered: control group with 20 patients without dental implants (group 1), 2 groups of patients with titanium dental implants, one without peri-implantitis (group 2), and the other with peri-implantitis (group 3) (n = 20 each). For patients with implants, depth of the gingival pockets of the implants were measured, and existing bleeding and suppuration were determined to assess peri-implantitis. Radiographs were taken if one or more factors applied to confirm the diagnosis of peri-implantitis. Further covariates were age, sex, duration of implant wear, and number of implants which were analyzed descriptively. Inferential analyses were undertaken using χ2 test, Kruskal-Wallis-, Wilcoxon-two-sample tests, and logistic regressions. RESULTS: The sample was composed of 35 female and 25 male patients with a mean age of 54.2 years (standard deviation = 14.76). The overall TiO2 stimulation test positivity frequency was 28.3% and were 30.0%, 5.0%, and 50.0% in the control, implants without peri-implantitis, and implants with peri-implantitis groups. No statistically significant differences could be seen in the frequencies of the TiO2 stimulation test results between control group and combined groups 2 and 3 (P-value = .84). The risk for positive TiO2 patients with a titanium implant of developing peri-implantitis was statistically significant and higher compared to negative TiO2 patients (odds ratio, 19.0 with 95% confidence interval [2.12,170.38]; P-value< .01). CONCLUSIONS: The data in this study showed a statistically significant relationship between a positive TiO2 stimulation test and peri-implantitis. Further studies with larger numbers of subjects are recommended to confirm this result.

RESUMEN

October 2019 saw the launch of iMED DENT, the first model study program in dentistry in Germany. The launch was preceded by a development process lasting several years in which European locations, among others, with innovative dental study programs were initially visited. The central reform objective of the model study program was then defined: the development, implementation, and ongoing optimization of an interdisciplinary curriculum with a scientific focus that integrates theoretical and practical dental content. Further steps were the development of the study program objectives and the modular study structure. The latter consists of the three parts: "Normal Function," "From Symptom to Disease," and "Therapy." In the curriculum, the central area of dentistry is flanked by basic and clinical medical subjects. This article reports on the important development steps of the model study program, its structure, and quality assurance measures. First evaluations of the achievement of study program objectives and the need for optimization in the current curriculum are presented.

Human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) are multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) that are capable of self-renewal with multilineage differentiation potential. After being cryopreserved, hDPSCs were reported to maintain a high level of proliferation and multi-differentiation abilities. In order to optimize cryopreservation techniques, decrease storage requirements and lower contamination risks, the feasibility of new whole-tooth cryopreservation and its effects on hDPSCs were tested. The survival rates, morphology, proliferation rates, cell activity, surface antigens and differentiation abilities of hDPSCs isolated from fresh teeth were compared with those of one-month cryopreserved teeth in 5% and 10% DMSO. The data of the present study indicated that the new cryopreservation approach did not reduce the capabilities or stemness of hDPSCs, with the exception that it extended the first appearance time of hDPSCs in the teeth that were cryopreserved in 10% DMSO, and reduced their recovery rate. With the novel strategy of freezing, the hDPSCs still expressed the typical surface markers of MSCs and maintained excellent proliferation capacity. Three consecutive weeks of osteogenic and adipogenic induction also showed that the expression of the key genes in hDPSCs, including lipoprotein lipase (LPL), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), type I collagen (COL I) and osteocalcin (OSC) was not affected, indicating that their differentiation abilities remained intact, which are crucial parameters for hDPSCs as cell-therapy candidates. These results demonstrated that the new cryopreservation method is low-cost and effective for the good preservation of hDPSCs without compromising cell performance, and can provide ideas and evidence for the future application of stem-cell therapies and the establishment of dental banks.

RESUMEN

Tissue adhesives have been successfully used in various kind of surgeries such as oral and maxillofacial surgery for some time. They serve as a substitute for suturing of tissues and shorten treatment time. Besides synthetic-based adhesives, a number of biological-based formulations are finding their way into research and clinical application. In natural adhesives, proteins play a crucial role, mediating adhesion and cohesion at the same time. Silk fibroin, as a natural biomaterial, represents an interesting alternative to conventional medical adhesives. Here, the most commonly used bioadhesives as well as the potential of silk fibroin as natural adhesives will be discussed.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence for the use of zirconium dioxide implants in immediate implant placement as well as for related immediate loading protocols. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the survival rate, success and patient satisfaction of immediately placed zirconia implants compared to delayed placed implants. METHODS: The study included 58 partially edentulous patients who were treated between 2013 and 2015 with immediate and delayed transgingival healing zirconium dioxide implants (SDS, Kreuzlingen/ Switzerland). In addition to survival and success rate, marginal bone loss was assessed using radiographs and soft tissue was evaluated using Pink Esthetic Score. Oral health-related quality of life was investigated prospectively using a modified OHIP questionnaire. RESULTS: The cumulative survival rate of all implants included was 92% with 88% classified as full success. No significant difference was found between the bone levels of immediately and delayed placed and immediately and delayed loaded implants. The mean Pink Esthetic Score after final prosthetic rehabilitation was 12.2/14 points indicating excellent esthetic clinical results. Analysis of the OHIP questionnaire showed a mean value of 0.54/100 points reflecting a high patient satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS: Immediate and delayed placed as well as loaded zirconium dioxide implants showed excellent results regarding implant success and survival in this study. Zirconium dioxide implants may ensure excellent esthetic results and high patient satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: Although DNA of high quality can be easily prepared from cultured cells with commercially available kits, many studies involve a large number of samples which increases the cost drastically. We optimized two simple and inexpensive methods for preparing DNA suitable for digital PCR from a small number of cells directly from wells of 96-well plates. METHODS: Cells (number: 103 -104 ) were lysed with a Direct PCR® lysis buffer or a 10% Chelex100® solution. The lysates were further purified and concentrated by means of DNA precipitation with a blue-colored glycogen as a carrier. PCR and digital PCR were used to evaluate the efficiency of the two methods. RESULTS: For 1000 cells from one primary culture and two tumor cell lines, DNA was reproducible and obtained with recovery rate (obtained/expected amount of DNA) in the range of 50%-90% as measured by the fluorometer dyes instrument Qubit. Using 8 out of a total of 10 µL DNA solution for 1000 cells, both conventional PCR and digital PCR were successful. For digital PCR, more than 1600 positive droplets were obtained for DNA from 1000 cells using the Direct PCR® method, corresponding to a yield efficiency of approximately 80%. Further reducing the number of cells down to 100 would be possible with 160 positive droplets expected. Both reagents are inexpensive (0.08€/sample). CONCLUSIONS: Two methods are efficient, especially the Direct PCR® reagent-based method provides a simple and inexpensive method for preparing DNA suitable for digital PCR from small number of cells.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to describe microbial flora associated with MRONJ and characterize the susceptibility of pathogens to help guide an effective empiric antibiotic treatment in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective, single-center analysis was performed, using 116 bone samples from 98 patients. The bone samples were homogenized and subjected to routine culture methods. Growing bacteria were differentiated to the species level using whole-cell mass spectrometry and subjected to susceptibility testing. RESULTS: A highly diverse microbial flora was detected in necrotic bone, with a simultaneous presence of two or more bacterial species in 79% of all patients. In at least 65% of samples, gram-negative isolates were detected. Therefore, bacterial species resistant against ß-lactamase inhibitors were present in at least 70% of all patients. CONCLUSIONS: The empiric choice of antibiotics in MRONJ patients should consider the high rate of gram-negative bacteria and resistance against ß-lactam antibiotics. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: According to recent guidelines and recommendations, systemic antibiotic treatment is a key component in the treatment of all stage 2 and 3 MRONJ patients. We recommend using fluoroquinolones for empiric treatment and emphasize the use of bacterial cultivation and susceptibility testing to enable an effective antibiotic treatment.

Magnesium (Mg)-based biomaterials hold considerable promise for applications in regenerative medicine. However, the degradation of Mg needs to be reduced to control toxicity caused by its rapid natural corrosion. In the process of developing new Mg alloys with various surface modifications, an efficient assessment of the relevant properties is essential. In the present study, a WE43 Mg alloy with a plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO)-generated surface was investigated. Surface microstructure, hydrogen gas evolution in immersion tests and cytocompatibility were assessed. In addition, a novel in vitro immunological test using primary human lymphocytes was introduced. On PEO-treated WE43, a larger number of pores and microcracks, as well as increased roughness, were observed compared to untreated WE43. Hydrogen gas evolution after two weeks was reduced by 40.7% through PEO treatment, indicating a significantly reduced corrosion rate. In contrast to untreated WE43, PEO-treated WE43 exhibited excellent cytocompatibility. After incubation for three days, untreated WE43 killed over 90% of lymphocytes while more than 80% of the cells were still vital after incubation with the PEO-treated WE43. PEO-treated WE43 slightly stimulated the activation, proliferation and toxin (perforin and granzyme B) expression of CD8+ T cells. This study demonstrates that the combined assessment of corrosion, cytocompatibility and immunological effects on primary human lymphocytes provide a comprehensive and effective procedure for characterizing Mg variants with tailorable degradation and other features. PEO-treated WE43 is a promising candidate for further development as a degradable biomaterial.

Cold plasma treatment increases the hydrophilicity of the surfaces of implants and may enhance their integration with the surrounding tissues. The implaPrep prototype device from Relyon Plasma generates cold atmospheric plasma via dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). In this study, titanium surfaces were treated with the implaPrep device for 20 s and assessed as a cell culture surface for fibroblasts. One day after seeding, significantly more cells were counted on the surfaces treated with cold plasma than on the untreated control titanium surface. Additionally, the viability assay revealed significantly higher viability on the treated surfaces. Morphological observation of the cells showed certain differences between the treated and untreated titanium surfaces. While conventional plasma devices require compressed gas, such as oxygen or argon, the implaPrep device uses atmospheric air as the gas source. It is, therefore, compact in size and simple to handle, and may provide a safe and convenient tool for treating the surfaces of dental implants, which may further improve the implantation outcome.

Encouraging clinical results were reported on a novel cone-in-cone coupling for the fixation of dental implant-supported crowns (Acuris, Dentsply Sirona Implants, Mölndal, Sweden). However, the presence or absence of a microgap and a potential bacterial leakage at the conometric joint has not yet been investigated. A misfit and a resulting gap between the conometric components could potentially serve as a bacterial reservoir that promotes plaque formation, which in turn may lead to inflammation of the peri-implant tissues. Thus, a two-fold study set-up was designed in order to evaluate the bidirectional translocation of bacteria along conometrically seated single crowns. On conometric abutments filled with a culture suspension of anaerobic bacteria, the corresponding titanium nitride-coated (TiN) caps were fixed by friction. Each system was sterilized and immersed in culture medium to provide an optimal environment for microbial growth. Positive and negative controls were prepared. Specimens were stored in an anaerobic workstation, and total and viable bacterial counts were determined. Every 48 h, samples were taken from the reaction tubes to inoculate blood agar plates and to isolate bacterial DNA for quantification using qrt-PCR. In addition, one Acuris test system was subjected to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate the precision of fit of the conometric coupling and marginal crown opening. Throughout the observational period of one week, blood agar plates of the specimens showed no viable bacterial growth. qrt-PCR, likewise, yielded a result approaching zero with an amount of about 0.53 × 10-4 µg/mL DNA. While the luting gap/marginal opening between the TiN-cap and the ceramic crown was within the clinically acceptable range, the SEM analysis failed to identify a measurable microgap at the cone-in-cone junction. Within the limits of the in-vitro study it can be concluded that the Acuris conometric interface does not allow for bacterial translocation under non-dynamic loading conditions.

Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) is a chronic degenerative disease that is often characterized by progressive impairment of the temporomandibular functional unit. The aim of this randomized controlled animal trial was a comparative analysis regarding the chondroregenerative potency of intra-articular stem/stromal cell therapy. Four weeks after combined mechanical and biochemical osteoarthritis induction in 28 rabbits, therapy was initiated by a single intra-articular injection, randomized into the following groups: Group 1: AB Serum (ABS); Group 2: Hyaluronic acid (HA); Group 3: Mesenchymal stromal cells (STx.); Group 4: Mesenchymal stromal cells in hyaluronic acid (HA + STx.). After another 4 weeks, the animals were euthanized, followed by histological examination of the removed joints. The histological analysis showed a significant increase in cartilage thickness in the stromal cell treated groups (HA + STx. vs. ABS, p = 0.028; HA + ST.x vs. HA, p = 0.042; STx. vs. ABS, p = 0.036). Scanning electron microscopy detected a similar heterogeneity of mineralization and tissue porosity in the subchondral zone in all groups. The single intra-articular injection of a stem cell containing, GMP-compliant advanced therapy medicinal product for the treatment of iatrogen induced osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint shows a chondroregenerative effect.

The Hamburg City Health Study (HCHS) is a large, prospective, long-term, population-based cohort study and a unique research platform and network to obtain substantial knowledge about several important risk and prognostic factors in major chronic diseases. A random sample of 45,000 participants between 45 and 74 years of age from the general population of Hamburg, Germany, are taking part in an extensive baseline assessment at one dedicated study center. Participants undergo 13 validated and 5 novel examinations primarily targeting major organ system function and structures including extensive imaging examinations. The protocol includes validate self-reports via questionnaires regarding lifestyle and environmental conditions, dietary habits, physical condition and activity, sexual dysfunction, professional life, psychosocial context and burden, quality of life, digital media use, occupational, medical and family history as well as healthcare utilization. The assessment is completed by genomic and proteomic characterization. Beyond the identification of classical risk factors for major chronic diseases and survivorship, the core intention is to gather valid prevalence and incidence, and to develop complex models predicting health outcomes based on a multitude of examination data, imaging, biomarker, psychosocial and behavioral assessments. Participants at risk for coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, stroke and dementia are invited for a visit to conduct an additional MRI examination of either heart or brain. Endpoint assessment of the overall sample will be completed through repeated follow-up examinations and surveys as well as related individual routine data from involved health and pension insurances. The study is targeting the complex relationship between biologic and psychosocial risk and resilience factors, chronic disease, health care use, survivorship and health as well as favorable and bad prognosis within a unique, large-scale long-term assessment with the perspective of further examinations after 6 years in a representative European metropolitan population.

Ultraviolet (UV) light and non-thermal plasma (NTP) are promising chair-side surface treatment methods to overcome the time-dependent aging of dental implant surfaces. After showing the efficiency of UV light and NTP treatment in restoring the biological activity of titanium and zirconia surfaces in vitro, the objective of this study was to define appropriate processing times for clinical use. Titanium and zirconia disks were treated by UV light and non-thermal oxygen plasma with increasing duration. Non-treated disks were set as controls. Murine osteoblast-like cells (MC3T3-E1) were seeded onto the treated or non-treated disks. After 2 and 24 h of incubation, the viability of cells on surfaces was assessed using an MTS assay. mRNA expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) were assessed using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis. Cellular morphology and attachment were observed using confocal microscopy. The viability of MC3T3-E1 was significantly increased in 12 min UV-light treated and 1 min oxygen NTP treated groups. VEGF relative expression reached the highest levels on 12 min UV-light and 1 min NTP treated surfaces of both disks. The highest levels of HGF relative expression were reached on 12 min UV light treated zirconia surfaces. However, cells on 12 and 16 min UV-light and NTP treated surfaces of both materials had a more widely spread cytoskeleton compared to control groups. Twelve min UV-light and one min non-thermal oxygen plasma treatment on titanium and zirconia may be the favored times in terms of increasing the viability, mRNA expression of growth factors and cellular attachment in MC3T3-E1 cells.

In this study, we describe the manufacturing and characterization of silk fibroin membranes derived from the silkworm Bombyx mori. To date, the dissolution process used in this study has only been researched to a limited extent, although it entails various potential advantages, such as reduced expenses and the absence of toxic chemicals in comparison to other conventional techniques. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the influence of different fibroin concentrations on the process output and resulting membrane properties. Casted membranes were thus characterized with regard to their mechanical, structural and optical assets via tensile testing, SEM, light microscopy and spectrophotometry. Cytotoxicity was evaluated using BrdU, XTT, and LDH assays, followed by live-dead staining. The formic acid (FA) dissolution method was proven to be suitable for the manufacturing of transparent and mechanically stable membranes. The fibroin concentration affects both thickness and transparency of the membranes. The membranes did not exhibit any signs of cytotoxicity. When compared to other current scientific and technical benchmarks, the manufactured membranes displayed promising potential for various biomedical applications. Further research is nevertheless necessary to improve reproducible manufacturing, including a more uniform thickness, less impurity and physiological pH within the membranes.

A number of modifications have been developed in order to enhance surface cytocompatibility for prosthetic support of dental implants. Among them, ultraviolet (UV) light and non-thermal plasma (NTP) treatment are promising methods. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of UV light and NTP on machined titanium, zirconia and modified polyetheretherketone (PEEK, BioHPP) surfaces in vitro. Machined samples of titanium, zirconia and BioHPP were treated by UV light and NTP of argon or oxygen for 12 min each. Non-treated disks were set as controls. A mouse fibroblast and a human gingival fibroblast cell line were used for in vitro experiments. After 2, 24 and 48 h of incubation, the attachment, viability and cytotoxicity of cells on surfaces were assessed. Results: Titanium, zirconia and BioHPP surfaces treated by UV light and oxygen plasma were more favorable to the early attachment of soft-tissue cells than non-treated surfaces, and the number of cells on those treated surfaces was significantly increased after 2, 24 and 48 h of incubation (p < 0.05). However, the effects of argon plasma treatment on the cytocompatibility of soft tissue cells varied with the type of cells and the treated material. UV light and oxygen plasma treatments may improve the attachment of fibroblast cells on machined titanium, zirconia and PEEK surfaces, that are materials for prosthetic support of dental implants.

Biphasic bone substitutes (BBS) are currently well-established biomaterials. Through their constant development, even natural components like hyaluronic acid (HY) have been added to improve both their handling and also their regenerative properties. However, little knowledge exists regarding the consequences of the addition of HY to their biocompatibility and the inflammatory tissue reactions. Thus, the present study was conducted, aiming to analyze the influence of two different amounts of high molecular weight HY (HMWHY), combined with a BBS, on in vitro biocompatibility and in vivo tissue reaction. Established in vitro procedures, using L929 cells, were used for cytocompatibility analyses under the test conditions of DIN EN:ISO 10993-5. For the in vivo part of the study, calvarial defects were created in 20 Wistar rats and subsequently filled with BBS, and BBS combined with two different HMWHY amounts, i.e., BBS + HY(L) and BBS + HY(H). As controls, empty defects were used. Established histological, immunohistochemical, and histomorphometrical methods were applied to analyze the tissue reactions to the three different materials, including the induction of pro- and anti-inflammatory macrophages and multinucleated giant cells (BMGCs). The in vitro results showed that none of the materials or compositions caused biological damage to the L929 cells and can be considered to be non-toxic. The in vivo results showed that only the addition of high doses of HY to a biphasic bone substitute significantly decreases the occurrence of pro-inflammatory macrophages (* p < 0.05), comparable to the numbers found in the control group, while no significant differences within the three study groups for M2-macrophages nor BMGCs were detected. In conclusion, the addition of different amounts of HMWHY does not seem to affect the inflammation response to BBS, while improving the material handling properties.

OBJECTIVES: Squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip represents a common type of cancer with a favourable prognosis. Different types of defect reconstruction after ablative surgery are described for maintenance of patients' quality of life. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study retrospectively evaluates the outcome of 105 patients treated for lower lip cancer. Oncological data as well as individual quality of life were investigated. RESULTS: Cervical lymph node metastases rarely occurred (7.6 %) and were correlated to larger-sized tumours (p = 0.041). Only five patients (4.8) died related to the tumour disease, especially after lymph node metastasis and tumour recurrence (p < 0.001). The 5-year rates for recurrence-free, overall and disease-specific survival were 84.5, 61.2 and 93.9 %. Tumour recurrence correlated with a resection margin of less than 0.75 cm (p = 0.089). With view to postoperative quality of life, the modified Bernard-Fries technique showed the most unfavourable results, particularly referring to sensibility, paraesthesia, lip pursing and mouth opening compared to a stair-step and/or Abbe reconstructions. CONCLUSIONS: Squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip shows a very favourable prognosis. Neck dissection seems often negligible particularly in small tumours. Patients' functional quality of life after lip surgery depends on the size of the primary and the used technique. Stair-step and/or Abbe reconstructions should be preferred to a Bernard-Fries technique in comparable defect sizes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Proper treatment of lower lip cancer provides favourable prognosis and preserves patients' functional and aesthetic quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: Dental stem cells (SCs) will be increasingly used for bone regeneration in the future. Recently, dental follicle cells (DFCs) from retained human third molars have been isolated and characterized as osteogenic progenitors. Although these results are promising for regenerative dentistry, molecular processes during osteogenic differentiation are not yet well understood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study compared DFCs before and during osteogenic differentiation. ALP activity was measured and cells were stained with alizarin red. Real-time RT-PCRs for osteogenic markers were done. The genome-wide expression profile was evaluated using a microarray. RESULTS: DFCs showed strong mineralization and increased expression of osteogenic marker genes during osteogenic differentiation. A microarray analysis showed regulated genes before and in the process of osteogenic differentiation (day 7). Several regulated genes in DFCs were associated with skeletal development. Bioinformatic analysis revealed a number of factors associated with dental follicle osteogenic differentiation. Osteogenic differentiation affected expression levels of the transcriptional regulators FOXC2 and ZNF219. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the results yielded new objectives for further studies on transcription factors like FOXC2 or ETV1 and their role in dental SCs during osteogenic differentiation.
