RESUMEN

This research presents the design and implementation of a chipless Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) multi-sensor tag on a flexible laminate. Along with the tag's primary function of data encoding for object identification purposes, the tag also incorporates moisture and temperature sensing functionalities within a compact size measuring a mere 15 × 16 mm2. The tag structure comprises of a total 29 resonators, with each resonator corresponding to one bit in the microwave response. The initial design utilized the bendable Rogers RT/duroid®5880 within a frequency band of 5.48-28.87 GHz. To conduct a comprehensive comparative analysis, the tag design is optimized for two distinct substrates including Kapton®HN and PET. The optimization process involves exploring the utilization of both silver nanoparticle-based ink and Aluminum as radiators. The sensing feature was incorporated by deploying a thin film of Kapton®HN over the longest slot of the tag which acts as a moisture sensor. Temperature sensing feature was achieved by combining Stanyl® polyamide, a temperature dependent polymer, with Rogers RT/duroid®5880 which served as a fused substrate. The tag showcases a high code density of 12.08 bits/cm2 enabling it to efficiently label 229 unique items. Its unique features include flexibility, miniaturized design, printability, cost-effectiveness and multi sensing property.

BACKGROUND: Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are common causes of morbidity and mortality, especially in low-income countries. Reducing adverse outcomes associated with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy has been the ultimate priority in recent years. We aim to evaluate the association between calcium supplementation and preeclampsia and gestational hypertension risk among pregnant women. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in electronic databases from inception to 15th July 2023, including only randomized controlled trials. Odds ratio (OR) were, and their corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI). RESULTS: A total of 26 studies with 20,038 patients (10,003 patients with calcium supplements and 10,035 patients with placebo group) were included in the analysis. The Pooled analysis of primary outcome shows that calcium supplements reduce the risk of preeclampsia by 49% (OR, 0.51(95%CI: 0.40-0.66), P<0.001), and reduce the risk of gestational hypertension by 30% (OR, 0.70 (95%CI: 0.58-0.85)), P<0.001) compared to placebo. There was a trend of lower incidence of preterm delivery (OR, 0.88 (95%CI: 0.71-1.09), P=0.23), labor induction (OR, 0.90 (95%CI: 0.78-1.03), P=0.13), small for gestational age (OR, 0.70 (95% CI:0.37-1.32), P = 0.27), low birth weight (OR, 0.96 (95%CI: 0.86-1.08), P=0.53), perinatal mortality (OR, 0.88 (95%CI: 0.72-1.09), P=0.24), and maternal mortality (OR, 0.48 (95%CI: 0.12-1.84), P=0.28) among calcium supplementation group compared with the placebo group, however, statistical signifance was not achieved. CONCLUSION: This study shows that calcium supplements are associated with a significant reduction in the risk of preeclampsia and gestational hypertension and a trend toward better maternal and fetal-related outcomes.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with an increased risk of Dementia. However, the association between catheter ablation (CA) in patients with atrial fibrillation and the risk of dementia is not well established, with conflicting results to date. We aimed to evaluate the association between CA patients and the risk of Dementia. We performed a systematic literature search using the PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane libraries for relevant articles from inception until 10th May 2023. Hazard ratios (HR) were pooled using a random-effect model, and a P-value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. A total of 5 studies with 125,649 patients (30,192 in the CA group and 95,457 in the non-CA group) were included. The mean age of patients among CA and non-CA groups was comparable (58.7 vs 58.18). The most common comorbidity among CA and non-CA groups was hypertension (18.49% vs 81.51%), respectively. Pooled analysis of primary outcome showed that CA was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of Dementia (HR, 0.63 [95% CI: 0.52-0.77], P < 0.001). Similarly, pooled analysis of secondary outcomes showed that the patients with CA had a lower risk of Alzheimer's disease (HR, 0.78 [95% CI: 0.66-0.92], P < 0.001) compared with the non-CA group. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the risk of vascular dementia (HR, 0.63 [95% CI: 0.38-1.06], P = 0.08) between both groups of patients. Our study suggested that catheter ablation reduced the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease compared to the nonablation group of patients.

In the world of digitization, different objects cooperate with the Internet of Things (IoT); these objects also amplify using sensing and data processing structures. Radio frequency identification (RFID) has been identified as a key enabler technology for IoT. RFID technology has been used in different conventional applications for security, goods storage, transportation and asset management. In this paper, a fully inkjet-printed chipless radio frequency identification (RFID) sensor tag is presented for the wireless identification of tagged objects. The dual polarized tag consists of two resonating structures functioning wirelessly. One resonator works for encoding purpose and other resonator is used as a CO2/temperature sensor. The sensing behavior of the tag relies on the integration of a meandered structure comprising of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). The MWCNT is highly sensitive to CO2 gas. The backscattered response of the square-shaped cascaded split ring resonators (SRR) is analyzed through a radar cross-section (RCS) curve. The overall tag dimension is 42.1 mm × 19.5 mm. The sensing performance of the tag is examined and optimized for two different flexible substrates, i.e., PET and Kapton®HN. The flexible tag structure has the capability to transmit 5-bit data in the frequency bands of 2.36-3.9 GHz and 2.37-3.89 GHz, for PET and Kapton®HN, respectively. The proposed chipless RFID sensor tag does not require any microchip or a power source, so it has a great potential for low-cost and automated temperature/CO2 sensing applications.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used for their anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and analgesic properties. However, their use is often associated with gastrointestinal tract (GIT) side effects due to the inhibition of both cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and COX-2 enzymes, leading to a decrease in gastroprotective prostaglandins (PG). To minimize these adverse effects, various approaches have been explored, including selective COX-2 inhibitors, NO-NSAIDs (nitric oxide-releasing NSAIDs), and dual COX/LOX (lipoxygenase) NSAIDs. However, the effects of these gastroprotective NSAIDs on the GIT and their efficacy remains uncertain. This review aims to provide an overview of the current understanding of the effects of traditional NSAIDs and gastroprotective NSAIDs on GIT. We discuss the underlying mechanisms of GIT damage caused by NSAIDs, including mucosal injury, ulceration, and bleeding, and the potential of gastroprotective NSAIDs to mitigate these effects. We also summarize recent studies on the efficacy and safety of various gastroprotective NSAIDs and highlight the limitations and challenges of these approaches. The review concludes with recommendations for future research in this field.

In the present study, different concentrations (1 and 3%) of Bi were incorporated into a fixed amount of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and SnO2 quantum dots (QDs) by co-precipitation technique. This research aimed to increase the efficacy of dye degradation and bactericidal behavior of SnO2. The high recombination rate of SnO2 can be decreased upon doping with two-dimensional materials (MoS2 nanosheets) and Bi metal. These binary dopants-based SnO2 showed a significant role in methylene blue (MB) dye degradation in various pH media and antimicrobial potential as more active sites are provided by nanostructured MoS2 and Bi3+ is responsible for producing a variety of different oxygen vacancies within SnO2. The prepared QDs were described via morphology, optical characteristics, elemental composition, functional group, phase formation, crystallinity, and d-spacing. In contrast, antimicrobial activity was checked at high and low dosages against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and the inhibition zone was calculated utilizing a Vernier caliper. Furthermore, prepared samples have expressed substantial antimicrobial effects against E. coli. To further explore the interactions between the MB and Bi/MoS2-SnO2 composite, we modeled and calculated the MB adsorption using density functional theory and the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof hybrid (HSE06) approach. There is a relatively strong interaction between the MB molecule and Bi/MoS2-SnO2 composite.

Infective endocarditis is an infection of the inner layers of the heart, seen often in intravenous drug users and patients with valvular lesions or prosthetic heart valves. This entity has high mortality and morbidity. The most common causative microorganism is Staphylococcus aureus. In this comprehensive literature review, we focused on both Staphylococcus aureus infections, i.e., methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) endocarditis, demographics, use of transthoracic echocardiogram and/or transesophageal echocardiogram for diagnostics, and treatments. Although clinical criteria are relevant, transesophageal echocardiogram plays a vital role in establishing and identifying the presence of infective endocarditis and its local complications, with higher sensitivity in patients with prosthetic valves. The antibiotic selection posed a great challenge for clinicians due to antibiotic resistance and the aggressive nature of Staphylococcus aureus. Early diagnosis of infective endocarditis, when suspected, and effective management by a multispecialty team can improve the outcome for the patients.

Heavy metal resistant bacteria are of great importance because they play a crucial role in bioremediation. In the present study, 11 bacterial strains isolated from industrial waste were screened under different concentrations of cadmium (Cd) (100 µM and 200 µM). Among 11 strains, the Cd tolerant Bacillus cereus (S6D1-105) strain was selected for in vitro and in vivo studies. B. cereus was able to solubilize potassium, and phosphate as well as produce protease and siderophores during plate essays. Moreover, we observed the response of hydroponically grown rice plants, inoculated with B. cereus which was able to promote plant growth, by increasing plant biomass, chlorophyll contents, relative water content, different antioxidant enzymatic activity such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and reducing malondialdehyde content in both roots and leaves of rice plants under Cd stress. Our results showed that the B. cereus can be used as a biofertilizer which might be beneficial for rice cultivation in Cd contaminated soils.

Recent outbreaks of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) in Waziristan make the disease a public health concern in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province, Pakistan. The awareness and behavior of local community towards the disease is an important factor towards effective control and management of CL in endemic areas of Pakistan. A cross-sectional community based survey was piloted in new emerging district of North Waziristan Agency (KPK province), Pakistan from August 2019- February 2020. The study aimed to examine the Knowledge, Attitude and Practices (KAP) of the local community members regarding CL. The results revealed that majority of the participants were male. Only 48.2% participants have knowledge about CL and the respondents had a moderate knowledge of CL vector and the disease. Few of the respondents were aware that CL is caused by sand flies, their breeding place, biting time, transmission of CL and control measures. Skin infection and sand-flies were the main disease symptoms and disease vector were known to some of the respondents. Most of the respondents showed positive attitude towards disease seriousness and believed that the disease could be cured and can be treated through modern medicines. Admission to hospitals, cleanliness and use of bed nets were the treatment measures for the disease in suspected patients, whereas some believed that the use of bed nets could be helpful in preventing the leishmaniasis. Moderate knowledge of the CL and its transmission in the study area emphasize the need to initiate health education and awareness campaigns to reduce the disease risk and burden in this highly endemic area in near future.
