BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a promising therapy for refractory Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). However, its long-term efficacy, safety, and recommended surgical age remain controversial, requiring evidence to compare different age categories. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study recruited 102 GTS patients who underwent DBS between October 2006 and April 2022 at two national centers. Patients were divided into two age categories: children (aged < 18 years; n = 34) and adults (aged ≥ 18 years; n = 68). The longitudinal outcomes as tic symptoms were assessed by the YGTSS, and the YBOCS, BDI, and GTS-QOL were evaluated for symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, and quality of life, respectively. RESULTS: Overall, these included patients who finished a median 60-month follow-up, with no significant difference between children and adults (p = 0.44). Overall, the YGTSS total score showed significant postoperative improvements and further improved with time (improved 45.2%, 51.6%, 55.5%, 55.6%, 57.8%, 61.4% after 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, and ≥ 60 months of follow-up compared to baseline, respectively) in all included patients (all p < 0.05). A significantly higher improvement was revealed in children than adults at ≥ 60 months of follow-up in the YGTSS scores (70.1% vs 55.9%, p = 0.043), and the time to achieve 60% improvement was significantly shorter in the children group (median 6 months vs 12 months, p = 0.013). At the last follow-up, the mean improvements were 45.4%, 48.9%, and 55.9% and 40.3%, 45.4%, and 47.9% in YBOCS, BDI, and GTS-QOL scores for children and adults, respectively, which all significantly improved compared to baseline (all p < 0.05) but without significant differences between these two groups (all p > 0.05), and the children group received significantly higher improvement in GTS-QOL scores than adults (55.9% vs. 47.9%, p = 0.049). CONCLUSIONS: DBS showed acceptable long-term efficacy and safety for both children and adults with GTS. Surgeries performed for patients younger than 18 years seemed to show acceptable long-term efficacy and safety and were not associated with increased risks of loss of benefit compared to patients older than 18 at the time of surgery. However, surgeries for children should also be performed cautiously to ensure their refractoriness and safety.

There are limited studies investigating the association between short-term exposure to PM2.5 and incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) cases in China. This study aims to examine the short-term effects of PM2.5 on the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. A combination of Poisson-distribution generalized linear model and distributed lag non-linear model was used to examine the association between short-term exposure to PM2.5 and incident cases of CVD. The results revealed that per 10 µg/m3 increment of PM2.5 would increase the incident CVD cases by 0.147% (Relative Risk: 1.00147, 95% Confidence Interval: 1.00008-1.00286) at a lag of 2 days. The stratified analyses showed higher effects risk in females, older residents (aged 60-75 years), and acute myocardial infarction group (p-value for difference <0.05). This study indicates that short-term exposure to PM2.5 may increase the risk of CVD and highlights the necessity for a higher air quality standard in Yantai, China.

Few studies have investigated the association between PM2.5 and hypertension among floating populations. We therefore examined the relationship using binary logistic regression. Each grade of increment in the annual average PM2.5 (grade one: ≤15 µg/m3; grade two: 15-25 µg/m3; grade three: 25-35 µg/m3 [Excluding 25]; grade four: ≥35 µg/m3) was associated with an increased risk of hypertension (odds ratio [OR] = 1.081, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.034-1.129). Among the female floating population (OR = 1.114, 95% CI: 1.030-1.204), those with education level of primary school and below (OR = 1.140, 95% CI: 1.058-1.229), construction workers (OR = 1.228, 95% CI: 1.058-1.426), and those living in the eastern region of China (OR = 1.241, 95% CI: 1.145-1.346) were more vulnerable to PM2.5. These results indicate that PM2.5 is positively associated with hypertension in floating populations. Floating populations who are female, less educated, construction workers, and living in the eastern region of China are more vulnerable to the adverse impacts of PM2.5.

Impaired activation and regulation of the extinction of inflammatory cells and molecules in injured neuronal tissues are key factors in the development of epilepsy. SerpinA3N is mainly associated with the acute phase response and inflammatory response. In our current study, transcriptomics analysis, proteomics analysis, and Western blotting showed that the expression level of Serpin clade A member 3N (SerpinA3N) is significantly increased in the hippocampus of mice with kainic acid (KA)-induced temporal lobe epilepsy, and this molecule is mainly expressed in astrocytes. Notably, in vivo studies using gain- and loss-of-function approaches revealed that SerpinA3N in astrocytes promoted the release of proinflammatory factors and aggravated seizures. Mechanistically, RNA sequencing and Western blotting showed that SerpinA3N promoted KA-induced neuroinflammation by activating the NF-κB signaling pathway. In addition, co-immunoprecipitation revealed that SerpinA3N interacts with ryanodine receptor type 2 (RYR2) and promotes RYR2 phosphorylation. Overall, our study reveals a novel SerpinA3N-mediated mechanism in seizure-induced neuroinflammation and provides a new target for developing neuroinflammation-based strategies to reduce seizure-induced brain injury.

PURPOSE: Photoperiod determines the metabolic activity of brown adipose tissue (BAT) and affects the food intake and body mass of mammals. Sympathetic innervation of the BAT controls thermogenesis and facilitates physiological adaption to seasonal changes, but the exact mechanism remains elusive. Previous studies have shown that central opioid signaling regulates BAT thermogenesis, and that the expression of the brain mu-opioid receptor (MOR) varies seasonally. Therefore, it is important to know whether MOR expression in BAT shows seasonal variation. METHODS: We determined the effect of photoperiod on BAT MOR availability using [11C]carfentanil positron emission tomography (PET). Adult rats (n = 9) were repeatedly imaged under various photoperiods in order to simulate seasonal changes. RESULTS: Long photoperiod was associated with low MOR expression in BAT (ß = - 0.04, 95% confidence interval: - 0.07, - 0.01), but not in muscles. We confirmed the expression of MOR in BAT and muscle using immunofluorescence staining. CONCLUSION: Photoperiod affects MOR availability in BAT. Sympathetic innervation of BAT may influence thermogenesis via the peripheral MOR system. The present study supports the utility of [11C]carfentanil PET to study the peripheral MOR system.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C threatens human health and brings a heavy economic burden. Shandong Province is the second most populous province in China and has uneven regional economic development. Therefore, we analyzed the incidence rate trend and regional differences of hepatitis C in Shandong Province from 2004 to 2021. METHODS: The monthly and annual incidence rates of hepatitis C in Shandong Province from 2022 to 2030 were predicted by fitting Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average model (ARIMA), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and ARIMA-LSTM combined model. RESULTS: From 2004 to 2021, annual new cases of hepatitis C in Shandong Province increased from 635 to 5834, with a total of 61,707 cases. The incidence rate increased from 0.69/100 thousand in 2004 to 6.40/100 thousand in 2019, with a slight decrease in 2020 and 2021. The average annual incidence rate was 3.47/100 thousand. In terms of regional distribution, the hepatitis C incidence rate in Shandong Province was generally high in the west and low in the east. It is estimated that the hepatitis C incidence rate in Shandong Province will be 9.21 per 100 thousand in 2030. CONCLUSION: The hepatitis C incidence rate in Shandong Province showed an increasing trend from 2004 to 2019 and a decreasing trend in 2020 and 2021. Significant regional variations in incidence rate existed. An upward trend in incidence rate is predicted from 2022 to 2030. It is necessary to strengthen the prevention and control of hepatitis C to achieve the goal of eliminating viral hepatitis by 2030.

BACKGROUND: New Block-Sequential-Regularized-Expectation-Maximization (BSREM) image reconstruction technique has been introduced for clinical use mainly for oncologic use. Accurate and quantitative image reconstruction is essential in myocardial perfusion imaging with positron emission tomography (PET) as it utilizes absolute quantitation of myocardial blood flow (MBF). The aim of the study was to evaluate BSREM reconstruction for quantitation in patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS AND RESULTS: We analyzed cardiac [15O]H2O PET studies of 177 patients evaluated for CAD. Differences between BSREM and Ordered-Subset-Expectation-Maximization with Time-Of-Flight (TOF) and Point-Spread-Function (PSF) modeling (OSEM-TOF-PSF) in terms of MBF, perfusable tissue fraction, and vascular volume fraction were measured. Classification of ischemia was assessed between the algorithms. OSEM-TOF-PSF and BSREM provided similar global stress MBF in patients with ischemia (1.84 ± 0.21 g⋅ml-1⋅min-1 vs 1.86 ± 0.21 g⋅ml-1⋅min-1) and no ischemia (3.26 ± 0.34 g⋅ml-1⋅min-1 vs 3.28 ± 0.34 g⋅ml-1⋅min-1). Global resting MBF was also similar (0.97 ± 0.12 g⋅ml-1⋅min-1 and 1.12 ± 0.06 g⋅ml-1⋅min-1). The largest mean relative difference in MBF values was 7%. Presence of myocardial ischemia was classified concordantly in 99% of patients using OSEM-TOF-PSF and BSREM reconstructions CONCLUSION: OSEM-TOF-PSF and BSREM image reconstructions produce similar MBF values and diagnosis of myocardial ischemia in patients undergoing [15O]H2O PET due to suspected obstructive coronary artery disease.

RESUMEN

Carimas is a multi-purpose medical imaging data processing tool, which can be used to visualize, analyze, and model different medical images in research. Originally, it was developed only for positron emission tomography data in 2009, but the use of this software has extended to many other tomography imaging modalities, such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Carimas is especially well-suited for analysis of three- and four-dimensional image data and creating polar maps in modeling of cardiac perfusion. This article explores various parts of Carimas, including its key features, program structure, and application possibilities.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to evaluate subjects with high-risk alcohol cardiotoxicity and patients with alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM) via dynamic 11C-Acetate positron emission tomography (PET) imaging as a myocardial oxidative metabolic probe. METHODS AND RESULTS: We recruited 37 subjects with chronic alcohol consumption [18 with moderate consumption (MC), 19 with heavy consumption (HC)], 5 ACM patients, and 12 healthy controls to receive dynamic 11C-Acetate PET scans. PET imaging data were analyzed to calculate kinetic parameters (e.g., Kmono, K1 and k2) based on the mono-exponential and one-tissue compartmental models. Myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2) and myocardial external efficiency (MEE) were then derived from these kinetic parameters. MVO2 was significantly lowered in the HC group and in ACM patients (0.121± 0.018 and 0.111 ± 0.017 mL·g-1·min-1, respectively) compared with those in healthy controls and MC subjects (0.144 ± 0.023 and 0.146 ± 0.027 mL·g-1·min-1, respectively; P < .01). MEE was significantly reduced in ACM patients (13.0% ± 4.3%) compared with those of healthy controls (22.4% ± 4.6%, P < .01), MC subjects (20.1% ± 4.5%, P < .05), and HC subjects (22.3% ± 4.5%, P < .001). CONCLUSION: Functional assessment via dynamic 11C-Acetate PET imaging may represent a clinically feasible probe for identifying cohorts with high-risk cardiotoxicity due to addictive alcohol consumption and ACM.

PURPOSE: To cross-compare three software packages (SPs)-Carimas, FlowQuant, and PMOD-to quantify myocardial perfusion at global, regional, and segmental levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Stress N-13 ammonia PET scans of 48 patients with HCM were analyzed in three centers using Carimas, FlowQuant, and PMOD. Values agreed if they had an ICC > 0.75 and a difference < 20% of the median across all observers. RESULTS: When using 1TCM on the global level, the agreement was good, and the maximum difference between 1TCM MBF values was 17.2% (ICC = 0.83). On the regional level, the agreement was acceptable except in the LCx region (25.5% difference, ICC = 0.74) between FlowQuant and PMOD. Carimas-1TCM agreed well with PMOD-1TCM and FlowQuant-1TCM. Values obtained with FlowQuant-1TCM had a somewhat lesser agreement with PMOD-1TCM, especially at the segmental level. CONCLUSIONS: The global and regional MBF values (with one exception) agree well between the different software packages. There is significant variability in segmental values, mainly located in the LCx region and segments. Out of the studied tools, Carimas can be used interchangeably with both PMOD and FlowQuant for 1TCM implementation on all levels-global, regional, and segmental.

BACKGROUND: To study the effects of subthalamic nucleus-deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on autonomic dysfunctions in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. METHODS: A total of 57 PD patients who underwent bilateral STN-DBS from March to December 2018, were retrospectively analyzed. Preplanned assessments at baseline and postoperatively at 1, 3, and 6 months also included the Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease-Autonomic questionnaire (SCOPA-Aut), the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) III score, levodopa equivalent day dose (LEDD), Parkinson's Disease Quality of Life Scale (PDQ-39), the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA), and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD). RESULTS: The SCOPA-Aut scores improved significantly [14.59% (18.32%), 24.00% (27.05%), 22.16% (27.07%), all P < 0.001] at 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months of STN-DBS, respectively. Analysis of the SCOPA-Aut sub-items showed significant improvements only in urine and thermoregulation sub-items at 6 months after surgery (P < 0.001). There was no significant correlation between improvements of SCOPA-Aut scores and improvements of PDQ-39 scores (P > 0.05) at 6 months after surgery. SCOPA-Aut scores were positively correlated with age (r = 0.428, P = 0.001); the improvements of SCCOPA-Aut scores were positively correlated with improvements of HAMA and HAMD scores (HAMA: r = 0.325, P = 0.015; HAMD: r = 0.265, P = 0.049) at 6 months after surgery. CONCLUSION: STN-DBS improved autonomic dysfunction symptoms of PD patients, and urinary and thermoregulatory sub-items of autonomic dysfunction were improved in the short-term after surgery. There was a close relationship between improved autonomic symptoms and improved anxiety and depression 6 months after surgery. We should therefore direct more attention to autonomic dysfunctions in PD involving detailed preoperative evaluations and postoperative follow-ups, to improve the quality of life of patients.

Nearly 1% of the global population suffers from epilepsy. Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) affects one-third of epileptic patients who are unable to treat their condition with existing drugs. For the treatment of DRE, neuromodulation offers a lot of potential. The background, mechanism, indication, application, efficacy, and safety of each technique are briefly described in this narrative review, with an emphasis on three approved neuromodulation therapies: vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), deep brain stimulation of the anterior nucleus of the thalamus (ANT-DBS), and closed-loop responsive neurostimulation (RNS). Neuromodulatory approaches involving direct or induced electrical currents have been developed to lessen seizure frequency and duration in patients with DRE since the notion of electrical stimulation as a therapy for neurologic diseases originated in the early nineteenth century. Although few people have attained total seizure independence for more than 12 months using these treatments, more than half have benefitted from a 50% drop in seizure frequency over time. Although promising outcomes in adults and children with DRE have been achieved, challenges such as heterogeneity among epilepsy types and etiologies, optimization of stimulation parameters, a lack of biomarkers to predict response to neuromodulation therapies, high-level evidence to aid decision-making, and direct comparisons between neuromodulatory approaches remain. To solve these existing gaps, authorize new kinds of neuromodulation, and develop personalized closed-loop treatments, further research is needed. Finally, both invasive and non-invasive neuromodulation seems to be safe. Implantation-related adverse events for invasive stimulation primarily include infection and pain at the implant site. Intracranial hemorrhage is a frequent adverse event for DBS and RNS. Other stimulation-specific side-effects are mild with non-invasive stimulation.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the relationship between the position of bilateral STN-DBS location of active contacts and the clinical efficacy of STN-DBS on motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. METHODS: Retrospectively analyze the clinical data of 57 patients with PD who underwent bilateral STN-DBS from March 2018 to December 2018. Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale-Part III (UPDRS-III) score, levodopa equivalent day dose (LEDD), Parkinson's Disease Quality of Life Scale (PDQ-39) before operation and within 6 months after operation, determine the location of activated contacts and volume of tissue activated (VTA) in the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) space, and analyze their correlation with the improvement rate of motor symptoms (UPDRS-III score improvement rate). RESULTS: After 6 months of follow up, the UPDRS-III scores of 57 patients (Med-off) were improved by 55.4 ± 18.9% (P<0.001) compared with that before operation. The improvement rate of PDQ-39 scores [(47.4 ± 23.2)%, (P < 0.001)] and the reduction rate of LEDD [(40.1 ± 24.3)%, (P < 0.01)] at 6 months postoperation were positively correlated with the improvement rate of motor symptoms (Med-off)(PDQ-39:r = 0.461, P<0.001; LEDD: r = 0.354, P = 0.007), the improvement rate of UPDRS-III (Med-off) and the Z-axis coordinate of the active contact in the MNI space were positively correlated (left side: r = 0.349,P = 0.008;right side: r = 0.369,P = 0.005). In the MNI space, there was no correlation between the UPDRS-III scores improvement rate (Med-off) at 6 months after operation and bilateral VTA in the STN motor subregion, STN associative subregion and STN limbic subregion of the active electrode contacts of 57 patients (all P > 0.05). At 6 months after surgery, the difference between the Z-axis coordinate in the different improvement rate subgroups(<25, 25 to 50%, and>50%) in the MNI space was statistically significant (left side: P = 0.030; right side: P = 0.024). In the MNI space, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups in the VTA of the electrode active contacts (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: STN-DBS can improve the motor symptoms of PD patients and improve the quality of life. The closer the stimulation is to the STN dorsolateral sensorimotor area, the higher the DBS is to improve the motor symptoms of PD patients.

BACKGROUND: Chronic alcohol consumption initially leads to asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction, but can result in myocardial impairment and heart failure if ongoing. This study sought to characterize myocardial tissues and oxidative metabolism in asymptomatic subjects with chronic alcohol consumption by quantitative cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) and 11C-acetate positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT). METHODS: Thirty-four male subjects (48.8 ± 9.1 years) with alcohol consumption > 28 g/day for > 10 years and 35 age-matched healthy male subjects (49.5 ± 9.7 years) underwent CMR and 11C-acetate PET/CT. Native and post T1 values and extracellular volume (ECV) from CMR and Kmono and K1 from PET imaging were measured. Quantitative measurements by CMR and PET imaging were compared between subjects with moderate to heavy alcohol consumption and healthy controls, and their correlations were also analyzed. RESULTS: Compared to healthy controls, subjects with alcohol consumption showed significantly shorter native T1 (1133 ± 65 ms vs. 1186 ± 31 ms, p < 0.001) and post T1 (477 ± 42 ms vs. 501 ± 38 ms, p = 0.008) values, greater ECV (28.2 ± 2.2% vs. 26.9 ± 1.3%, p = 0.003), marginally lower Kmono (57.6 ± 12.1 min- 1 × 10- 3 vs. 63.0 ± 11.7 min- 1 × 10- 3, p = 0.055), and similar K1 (0.82 ± 0.13 min- 1 vs. 0.83 ± 0.15 min- 1, p = 0.548) after adjusting for confounding factors. There were no significant differences in CMR measurements and K1 between subjects with heavy and moderate alcohol consumption (all p > 0.05). In contrast, subjects with heavy alcohol consumption showed significantly lower Kmono values compared to those with moderate alcohol consumption (52.9 ± 12.1 min- 1 × 10- 3 vs. 63.7 ± 9.2 min- 1 × 10- 3, p = 0.012). Strong and moderate correlations were found between K1 and ECV in healthy controls (r = 0.689, p = 0.013) and subjects with moderate alcohol consumption (r = 0.518, p = 0.048), respectively. CONCLUSION: Asymptomatic men with heavy alcohol consumption have detectable structural and metabolic changes in myocardium on CMR and 11C-acetate PET/CT. Compared with quantitative CMR, 11C-acetate PET/CT imaging may be more sensitive for detecting differences in myocardial damage among subjects with moderate to heavy alcohol consumption.

BACKGROUND: We explored agreement in the quantification of myocardial perfusion by cross-comparison of implemented software packages (SPs) in three distinguishable patient profile populations. METHODS: We studied 91 scans of patients divided into 3 subgroups based on their semi-quantitative perfusion findings: patients with normal perfusion, with reversible perfusion defects, and with fixed perfusion defects. Rest myocardial blood flow (MBF), stress MBF, and myocardial flow reserve (MFR) were obtained with QPET, SyngoMBF, and Carimas. Agreement between SPs was considered adequate when a pairwise standardized difference was found to be < 0.20 and its corresponding intraclass correlation coefficient was ≥ 0.75. RESULTS: In patients with normal perfusion, two out of three comparisons of global stress MBF quantifications were outside the limits of agreement. In ischemic patients, all comparisons of global stress MBF and MFR were outside the limits of established agreement. In patients with fixed perfusion defects, all SP comparisons of perfusion quantifications were within the limit of agreement. Regionally, agreement of these perfusion estimates was mostly found for the left anterior descending artery vascular territory. CONCLUSION: Reversible defects demonstrated the worst agreement in global stress MBF and MFR and discrepancies showed to be regional dependent. Reproducibility between SPs should not be assumed.

BACKGROUND: Astrocyte and microglia activation are well-known features of temporal lobe epilepsy that may contribute to epileptogenesis. However, the mechanisms underlying glia activation are not well understood. Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) H19 has diverse functions depending on physiological or pathological state, and its role in epilepsy is unknown. We previously demonstrated that H19 was significantly upregulated in the latent period of epilepsy and may be associated with cell proliferation and immune and inflammatory responses. We therefore speculated that H19 is involved in the hippocampal glial cell activation during epileptogenesis. METHODS: H19 was overexpressed or knocked down using an adeno-associated viral vector delivery system. A rat status epilepticus model was induced by intra-amygdala kainic acid injection. Astrocyte and microglia activation were assessed by immunofluorescence and western blot analyses. Expression of proinflammatory cytokines and components of the Janus kinase (JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) signaling pathways were evaluated with western blotting. RESULTS: H19 overexpression induced the activation of astrocytes and microglia and the release of proinflammatory cytokines (interleukin-1ß and interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α) in the hippocampus, whereas H19 knockdown inhibited status epilepticus-induced glial cell activation. Moreover, H19 activated JAK/STAT signaling by promoting the expression of Stat3 and c-Myc, which is thought to be involved in astrocyte activation. CONCLUSIONS: LncRNA H19 contributes to hippocampal glial cell activation via modulation of the JAK/STAT pathway and could be a therapeutic tool to prevent the development of epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Although abnormal hippocampal structure and impaired spatial memory have been revealed in a pilocarpine rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), the brain functional network changes are still unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the changes of brain functional connectivity related to the hippocampus and the associated memory impairment in a pilocarpine model of TLE. METHODS: Functional magnetic resonance imaging signals were recorded in pilocarpine-treated rats and controls by using a 7.0 T magnetic resonance scanner, and independent component analysis was performed to determine the hippocampal functional network. Behavioral tests, including novel location test, novel object test, and episodic memory test, were utilized to evaluate different aspects of memory impairment. RESULTS: Memory impairment was observed in the TLE group in all three behavior tests. As compared to control, decreased connectivity of the hippocampal functional network was observed in the anterior dorsal hippocampus, the amygdala, the thalamus, the motor cortex, and the somatosensory cortex in the TLE group. Meanwhile, increased connectivity was found in the visual cortex, the mesencephalon, and the insula in the TLE group. Correlation analysis revealed that functional connections between the hippocampal network and brain regions such as the dorsal hippocampus and the thalamus specifically relate to the spatial memory behavior, whereas connections between the hippocampal network and regions such as the amygdala, the motor cortex, the somatosensory cortex, and the mesencephalon relate to both the spatial and the object memory performance. SIGNIFICANCE: Our results indicated a trend of decreased connectivity in the hippocampal functional network, as well as spatial, object, and episodic memory impairment in the pilocarpine-induced TLE rat. Moreover, connections within the hippocampal network showed a relationship with spatial memory, and connections between the hippocampal network and regions in other networks revealed an association with both spatial and object memory.

BACKGROUND: Scaling glomerular filtration rate (GFR) to body surface area (BSA) has been widely accepted, and was debated in recent years. Although the indexation ability of BSA is inferior to other physiological variables, the evaluation of BSA formulae is still meaningful to clinical practice. In this study, to evaluate the indexation ability of BSA formulae, the repeated measures analyses of camera-based scintigraphy (Gates method, gGFR) and plasma-based clearance (pGFR) were used to specially focus on the between-subject variability that tried to be minimized by GFR normalization. METHODS: The patients, who were older than 18 y and suffered from renal diseases, were enrolled and grouped according to the Chinese BMI (body mass index) criteria. All patients accepted renal scintigraphy and plasma clearance examinations. The gGFR and pGFR were separately scaled to DuBois & DuBois, Boyd, Stevenson, Gehan, Haycock, Mosteller, Hu and Livingston and Lee's formula. In the repeated measures analyses, the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) and the ratio of residual standard deviation to pooled standard deviation (RSD/PSD) were used for the evaluation. RESULTS: During January 2010 and May 2012, 220 patients were enrolled. The evaluated BSA formulae had well correlated results and significant differences among BMI groups. From high to low, the sequence of the correlation between BMI and BSA formula was L-L, Haycock, Gehan, Boyd, Mosteller, Stevenson, Hu and DuBois & DuBois formula. Both the scaled indices (ICC and CCC) and RSD/PSD indicated that, the sequence of indexation ability of BSA equations was Livingston < Haycock < Gehan < Stevenson < Mosteller < Boyd < Hu < DuBois & DuBois. CONCLUSIONS: Among the evaluated BSA formulae, DuBois & DuBois formula correlates to BMI the worst, and has the best indexation ability in scaling GFR of adult renal patients.

To analyze erythropoietin receptor (EpoR) status in tumors, recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEpo) was labeled with 99m Tc by 99m Tc-centered 1-pot synthesis, resulting in high radiochemical purity, stability, and biological activity. Both in vitro cell culture experiments and biodistribution studies of normal rats demonstrated successful EpoR targeting. The biodistribution of labeled rHuEpo in a NCI-H1975 xenograft model showed tumor accumulation (tumor-to-muscle ratio, 4.27 ± 1.77), confirming the expression of active EpoR in tumors. Thus, as a novel single positron emission computerized tomography tracer for the imaging of EpoR expression in vivo, 99m Tc-rHuEpo is effective for exploring the role of EpoR in cancer growth, metastasis and angiogenesis.
