High-entropy alloy (HEA) nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted attention in several fields because of their fascinating properties. The high mechanical strength, good thermal stability, and superior corrosion resistance of HEAs, which are derived from their high configurational entropy, are attractive features. Herein, we investigated the thermal stability of FeCoNiCuPd HEA NPs on reduced graphene oxide via in situ transmission electron microscopy observations at elevated temperatures. The HEA NPs maintained their structure, size, and composition at 700 °C, and their size gradually decreased accompanied by the preferential sublimation of Cu. On the contrary, the deterioration of the monometallic Pd NPs begins at temperatures greater than 700 °C according to Ostwald ripening, which involves the migration of adatoms or mobile molecular species. Theoretical calculations revealed that the detachment of adatoms from clusters (i.e., the first step of Ostwald ripening) was suppressed in the case of HEA NPs because of the high-configuration-entropy effect.

Differential diagnosis is sometimes difficult in practical psychiatric settings, in terms of using the current diagnostic system based on presenting symptoms and signs. The creation of a novel diagnostic system using objective biomarkers is expected to take place. Neuroimaging studies and others reported that subcortical brain structures are the hubs for various psycho-behavioral functions, while there are so far no neuroimaging data-driven clinical criteria overcoming limitations of the current diagnostic system, which would reflect cognitive/social functioning. Prior to the main analysis, we conducted a large-scale multisite study of subcortical volumetric and lateralization alterations in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and autism spectrum disorder using T1-weighted images of 5604 subjects (3078 controls and 2526 patients). We demonstrated larger lateral ventricles volume in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder, smaller hippocampus volume in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia-specific smaller amygdala, thalamus, and accumbens volumes and larger caudate, putamen, and pallidum volumes. In addition, we observed a leftward alteration of lateralization for pallidum volume specifically in schizophrenia. Moreover, as our main objective, we clustered the 5,604 subjects based on subcortical volumes, and explored whether data-driven clustering results can explain cognitive/social functioning in the subcohorts. We showed a four-biotype classification, namely extremely (Brain Biotype [BB] 1) and moderately smaller limbic regions (BB2), larger basal ganglia (BB3), and normal volumes (BB4), being associated with cognitive/social functioning. Specifically, BB1 and BB2-3 were associated with severe and mild cognitive/social impairment, respectively, while BB4 was characterized by normal cognitive/social functioning. Our results may lead to the future creation of novel biological data-driven psychiatric diagnostic criteria, which may be expected to be useful for prediction or therapeutic selection.

According to the operational diagnostic criteria, psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia (SZ), bipolar disorder (BD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are classified based on symptoms. While its cluster of symptoms defines each of these psychiatric disorders, there is also an overlap in symptoms between the disorders. We hypothesized that there are also similarities and differences in cortical structural neuroimaging features among these psychiatric disorders. T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans were performed for 5,549 subjects recruited from 14 sites. Effect sizes were determined using a linear regression model within each protocol, and these effect sizes were meta-analyzed. The similarity of the differences in cortical thickness and surface area of each disorder group was calculated using cosine similarity, which was calculated from the effect sizes of each cortical regions. The thinnest cortex was found in SZ, followed by BD and MDD. The cosine similarity values between disorders were 0.943 for SZ and BD, 0.959 for SZ and MDD, and 0.943 for BD and MDD, which indicated that a common pattern of cortical thickness alterations was found among SZ, BD, and MDD. Additionally, a generally smaller cortical surface area was found in SZ and MDD than in BD, and the effect was larger in SZ. The cosine similarity values between disorders were 0.945 for SZ and MDD, 0.867 for SZ and ASD, and 0.811 for MDD and ASD, which indicated a common pattern of cortical surface area alterations among SZ, MDD, and ASD. Patterns of alterations in cortical thickness and surface area were revealed in the four major psychiatric disorders. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a cross-disorder analysis conducted on four major psychiatric disorders. Cross-disorder brain imaging research can help to advance our understanding of the pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders and common symptoms.

Construction of the core structure of akuammiline alkaloids with three-dimensional cage-like structures for their diversity-oriented synthesis was investigated. Extensive exploration centered around the introduction of nitrogen functional groups and construction of the E-ring in an intramolecular or intermolecular manner revealed that a Claisen rearrangement approach involving intramolecular amination provided a common precursor, potentially facilitating divergent access to various types of akuammiline alkaloids.

GPR41, a G protein-coupled receptor, serves as a sensor for short-chain fatty acids and plays a crucial role in regulating multiple physiological processes such as the maintenance of metabolic and immune homeostasis. Therefore, the modulation of GPR41 has garnered attention as a potential strategy for the treatment of various disorders. We conducted a structure-activity relationship study on a lead tetrahydroquinolone derivative bearing a 2-(trifluoromethoxy)benzene group that displayed antagonistic activity toward GPR41. Modification of the aryl group attached to the furan moiety revealed that derivatives containing di- or trifluorobenzene, instead of 2-(trifluoromethoxy)benzene, exhibited agonistic activity toward GPR41, comparable with the reported agonistic modulator AR420626. These results suggest that the aryl group plays a pivotal role in regulating the activity of compounds toward GPR41, providing valuable insights for the design of GPR41 modulators.

PURPOSE: We aimed to identify factors that contribute to the discontinuation of perampanel. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients with epilepsy at the Department of Psychiatry, Hokkaido University Hospital. We evaluated the factors contributing to perampanel discontinuation as primary outcomes using Cox proportional hazards regression. Then, we explored the components contributing to the primary outcomes using logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: A total of 118 patients were included, 44.9% of whom discontinued participation, 22.0% had intellectual disability, and 23.7% had a psychiatric disorder other than intellectual disability. Adverse effects occurred in 65% of the patients, 23.7% had psychiatric adverse effects (PAE), and 49.2% had common adverse effects (CAE). The effect of PER to suppress seizures was confirmed in 65.3% of them. Discontinuation was influenced by non-response (Hazard Ratio (HR) 6.70, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 3.42-13.1), the occurrence of PAE (HR 3.68, 95% CI 1.89-7.16), CAE (HR 1.90, 95% CI 1.06-3.41), and comorbid psychiatric disorders (HR 2.35, 95% CI 1.21-4.59). Moreover, comorbid intellectual disability correlated with a low risk of PAE (OR 0.19, 95% CI 0.04-0.89). CONCLUSION: The discontinuation of perampanel is influenced by poor efficacy and the occurrence of common/psychiatric adverse effects. BACKGROUND: To examine whether the "Effectiveness of Guideline for Dissemination and Education in psychiatric treatment (EGIUDE)" project affects the rate of prescriptions of hypnotic medication and the type of hypnotic medications prescribed among psychiatrists, for schizophrenia and major depressive disorder in Japan. METHODS: The EGUIDE project is a nationwide prospective study of evidence-based clinical guidelines for schizophrenia and major depressive disorder in Japan. From 2016 to 2021, clinical and prescribing data from patients discharged from hospitals participating in the EGUIDE project were used to examine hypnotic medication prescriptions The prescribing rate of hypnotics and the prescribing rate of each type of hypnotic (benzodiazepine receptor agonist, nonbenzodiazepine receptor agonist, melatonin receptor agonist, and orexin receptor antagonist) were compared among patients who had been prescribed medication by psychiatrists participating in the EGUIDE project and patients who had been prescribed medication by nonparticipating psychiatrists. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the effect of the EGUIDE project on the prescription of hypnotic medications. RESULTS: A total of 12,161 patients with schizophrenia and 6,167 patients with major depressive disorder were included. Psychiatrists participating in the EGUIDE project significantly reduced the rate of prescribing hypnotic medication and benzodiazepine receptor agonists for both schizophrenia (P < 0.001) and major depressive disorder (P < 0.001) patients. CONCLUSION: This is the first study to investigate the educational effects of guidelines for the treatment of psychiatric disorders on psychiatrists in terms of prescribing hypnotic medications to patients. The EGUIDE project may play an important role in reducing hypnotic medication prescription rates, particularly with respect to benzodiazepine receptor agonists. The results suggest that the EGUIDE project may result in improved therapeutic behavior.

Plants have the regenerative ability to reconnect cut organs, which is physiologically important to survive severe tissue damage. The ability to reconnect organs is utilized as grafting to combine two different individuals. Callus formation at the graft junction facilitates organ attachment and vascular reconnection. While it is well documented that local wounding signals provoke callus formation, how callus formation is differentially regulated at each cut end remains elusive. Here, we report that callus formation activity is asymmetrical between the top and bottom cut ends and is regulated by differential auxin accumulation. Gene expression analyses revealed that cellular auxin response is preferentially upregulated in the top part of the graft. Disruption of polar auxin transport inhibited callus formation from the top, while external application of auxin was sufficient to induce callus formation from the bottom, suggesting that asymmetric auxin accumulation is responsible for active callus formation from the top end. We further found that the expression of a key regulator of callus formation, WUSCHEL-RELATED HOMEOBOX 13 (WOX13), is induced by auxin. The ectopic callus formation from the bottom end, which is triggered by locally supplemented auxin, requires WOX13 function, demonstrating that WOX13 plays a pivotal role in auxin-dependent callus formation. The asymmetric WOX13 expression is observed both in grafted petioles and incised inflorescence stems, underscoring the generality of our findings. We propose that efficient organ reconnection is achieved by a combination of local wounding stimuli and disrupted long-distance signaling.

Highly efficient tissue repair is pivotal for surviving damage-associated stress. Plants generate callus upon injury to heal wound sites, yet regulatory mechanisms of tissue repair remain elusive. Here, we identified WUSCHEL-RELATED HOMEOBOX 13 (WOX13) as a key regulator of callus formation and organ adhesion in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). WOX13 belongs to an ancient subclade of the WOX family, and a previous study shows that WOX13 orthologs in the moss Physcomitrium patens (PpWOX13L) are involved in cellular reprogramming at wound sites. We found that the Arabidopsis wox13 mutant is totally defective in establishing organ reconnection upon grafting, suggesting that WOX13 is crucial for tissue repair in seed plants. WOX13 expression rapidly induced upon wounding, which was partly dependent on the activity of an AP2/ERF transcription factor, WOUND-INDUCED DEDIFFERENTIATION 1 (WIND1). WOX13 in turn directly upregulated WIND2 and WIND3 to further promote cellular reprogramming and organ regeneration. We also found that WOX13 orchestrates the transcriptional induction of cell wall-modifying enzyme genes, such as GLYCOSYL HYDROLASE 9Bs, PECTATE LYASE LIKEs and EXPANSINs. Furthermore, the chemical composition of cell wall monosaccharides was markedly different in the wox13 mutant. These data together suggest that WOX13 modifies cell wall properties, which may facilitate efficient callus formation and organ reconnection. Furthermore, we found that PpWOX13L complements the Arabidopsis wox13 mutant, suggesting that the molecular function of WOX13 is partly conserved between mosses and seed plants. This study provides key insights into the conservation and functional diversification of the WOX gene family during land plant evolution.

BACKGROUND: Although several guidelines recommend monotherapy with antipsychotics for the treatment of schizophrenia, patients who receive long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) are frequently treated with oral antipsychotics (OAPs). In the present study, we investigated the detailed use of psychotropic medications among patients throughout Japan with schizophrenia who received LAIs or OAPs. METHODS: The present study used data from the project for the Effectiveness of Guidelines for Dissemination and Education in psychiatric treatment from 94 facilities in Japan. The LAI group included patients who received any LAI, and the non-LAI group included patients who took only OAP medications at discharge. The participants of this study were 2518 schizophrenia patients (263 in the LAI group and 2255 in the non-LAI group) who received inpatient treatment and had prescription information at discharge between 2016 and 2020. RESULTS: This study revealed significantly higher rates of polypharmacy antipsychotics, number of antipsychotics, and chlorpromazine equivalents in the LAI group than in the non-LAI group. In contrast, the LAI group showed lower rate of concomitant use of hypnotic and/or antianxiety medication than the non-LAI group. CONCLUSIONS: Presenting these real-world clinical results, we want to encourage clinicians to keep monotherapy in mind for the treatment of schizophrenia, especially by reducing concomitant use of antipsychotics in the LAI group and reducing hypnotic and/or antianxiety medication in the non-LAI group.

RESUMEN

A gold-catalyzed cyclization reaction of alkynyl-indoles has been developed for the stereoselective construction of the quaternary carbon center of fused indolines. This reaction efficiently produces fused indolines via diastereoselective 6-endo-dig cyclization controlled by a bulky TIPS group, followed by nucleophilic attack of the carboxy group on the resulting imine. The lactone moiety of the fused indoline can be reductively cleaved to produce a tricyclic indoline, which could be useful for the synthesis of akuammiline alkaloids.

BACKGROUND: Patients with epilepsy (PWE), especially those with Idiopathic Epilepsy (GE), are at a high risk of disadvantage caused by non-adherence. It has been suggested that medical visit behavior may be a surrogate indicator of medication adherence. We hypothesized that patients with IGE would adhere poorly to visits. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of PWE who visited the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology at Hokkaido University Hospital between January 2017 and December 2019. Demographic and clinical information on PWE were extracted from medical records and visit data from the medical information system. Non-attendance of outpatient appointments was defined as "not showing up for the day of an appointment without prior notice." Mixed-effects logistic regression analysis was conducted with non-attendance as the objective variable. RESULTS: Of the 9151 total appointments, 413 were non-attendances, with an overall non-attendance rate of 4.5%. IGE was a more frequent non-attendance than Focal Epilepsy (FE) (odds ratio (OR) 1.94; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.17-3.21; p = 0.010). History of public assistance receipt was associated with higher non-attendance (OR 2.04; 95% CI 1.22-3.43; p = 0.007), while higher education (OR 0.64; 95% CI 0.43-0.93; p = 0.021) and farther distance to a hospital (OR 0.33; 95% CI 0.13-0.88; p = 0.022), and higher frequency of visits (OR 0.18; 95% CI 0.04-0.86; p = 0.031) were associated with fewer non-attendances. In a subgroup analysis of patients with GE, women were associated with fewer non-attendance (OR 0.31; 95% CI 0.14-0.72; p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: GE was more frequent in the non-attendance group than in the FE group. Among patients with GE, females were found to have non-attendance less frequently; however, there was no clear difference in the odds of non-attendance between Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME) and IGE other than JME.

BACKGROUND: Polypharmacy of additional psychotropics alongside the main treatment drug (antipsychotics in schizophrenia and antidepressants in major depressive disorder) is common in Japan. Our goal is to align psychotropic prescription in Japan with international standards, while reducing the differences between facilities. To achieve this goal, we aimed to compare prescriptions at the time of hospital admission and discharge. METHODS: Data on prescriptions at admission and discharge from 2016 to 2020 were collected. We divided the patients into four groups: (1) mono_mono group, monotherapy of the main drug at admission and discharge; (2) mono_poly group, monotherapy at admission and polypharmacy at discharge; (3) poly_poly group, polypharmacy at admission and discharge; and (4) poly_mono group, polypharmacy at admission and monotherapy at discharge. We compared the changes in dosage and number of psychotropics among the four groups. RESULTS: For both schizophrenia and major depressive disorder, the patients who received monotherapy with the main drug at admission were likely to receive main drug monotherapy at discharge and vice versa. For schizophrenia, the polypharmacy was prescribed more often in the mono_poly group than that in the mono_mono group. The prescription was not changed at all for more than 10% of the patients. CONCLUSIONS: It is critical to avoid a polypharmacy regimen to ensure that guideline-compliant treatment is provided. We expect higher rates of monotherapy with the main drug after the EGUIDE lectures. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study protocol was registered in the University Hospital Medical Information Network Registry (UMIN000022645).

AIM: We investigated the association of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) with anxiolytic and sleep medication use in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and schizophrenia (SZ). METHODS: This nationwide observational study analyzed data from 3483 MDD inpatients and 6663 SZ inpatients. Patients with MDD and SZ were classified into those who underwent ECT during hospitalization and those who did not. A propensity score-matching method was performed to adjust for preadmission characteristics and clinical information, which were expected bias between the two groups. Rates of anxiolytic and sleep medication use at discharge were compared in the matched sample. RESULTS: 500 MDD patients were assigned to both groups. In the matched MDD sample, the rate of anxiolytic and sleep medication use at discharge was significantly lower in the ECT group than in the non-ECT group (64.9% vs. 75.8%, P = 1.7 × 10-4 ). In the ECT group, the rate of anxiolytic and sleep medication use at discharge was significantly lower than that prior to admission (64.9% vs. 73.2%, P = 1.2 × 10-14 ). 390 SZ patients were allocated. In the matched SZ sample, the ECT group was not significantly different from the non-ECT group in the rate of anxiolytics and sleep medications use at discharge (61.3% vs. 68.2%, P = 4.3 × 10-2 ). In the ECT group, the rate of anxiolytics and sleep medications use at discharge was significantly lower than that before admission (61.3% vs. 70.5%, P = 4.4 × 10-4 ), although this was not the primary outcome. CONCLUSION: Reduction of anxiolytic and sleep medication use may be considered positively when ECT is indicated for treatment of MDD.

RESUMEN

AIM: This study aims to examine the real-world effectiveness of education regarding clinical guidelines for psychiatric disorders using 'the Effectiveness of guidelines for dissemination and education in psychiatric treatment (EGUIDE)' project. METHODS: The EGUIDE project is a nationwide prospective implementation study of two clinical practice guidelines, i.e., the Guideline for Pharmacological Therapy of Schizophrenia and the Treatment Guidelines for Major Depressive Disorders, in Japan. Between 2016 and 2019, 782 psychiatrists belonging to 176 hospitals with psychiatric wards participated in the project and attended lectures on clinical practice guidelines. The proportions of guideline-recommended treatments in 7405 patients with schizophrenia and 3794 patients with major depressive disorder at participating hospitals were compared between patients under the care of psychiatrists participating in the project and those not participating in the project. Clinical and prescribing data on the patients discharged from April to September each year from participating hospitals of the project were also analyzed. RESULTS: The proportions of three quality indicators (antipsychotic monotherapy regardless of whether other psychotropics medication, antipsychotic monotherapy without other psychotropics and no prescription of anxiolytics or hypnotics) for schizophrenia were higher among participating psychiatrists than among nonparticipating psychiatrists. As similar results were obtained in major depressive disorder, the effectiveness of the project for the dissemination of guideline-recommended treatment has been replicated. CONCLUSION: This strategy of providing education regarding the clinical guidelines for psychiatric disorders was effective in improving the treatment-related behavior of psychiatrists. The use of this education-based strategy might contribute to resolving the mental health treatment gap.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia and mild cognitive impairment are characterised by impaired cognition accompanied by neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) relating to mood, including depression, anxiety, and apathy. However, the utility of AD biomarkers for predicting mood symptoms of NPS remains controversial. Herein, we analyzed the relationship between phosphorylated tau (p-tau) and depression, anxiety, and apathy of NPS. We also examined the influence of genetic factors such as apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 on these relationships. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey in older patients (n = 122) with normal cognition (n = 12), mild cognitive impairment (n = 46), and AD (n = 64) strictly diagnosed by the board of psychiatrists and neurologists of Hokkaido University. NPS of the patients were assessed using the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire (NPI). All patients also received a lumbar puncture to obtain cerebral spinal fluid for assessment of p-tau. The inverse probability weighting method was used to adjust for demographic differences between the p-tau present group and the p-tau absent group. RESULTS: There was an association between p-tau accumulation and decreased incidence of depression and apathy. APOE ε4 non-carriers also showed a trend toward a negative association between p-tau and depression, which was not evident in APOE ε4 carriers. CONCLUSIONS: We provide new evidence for a negative correlation between p-tau and depression and apathy of NPS, which may be influenced by APOE ε4. Future longitudinal studies are required to confirm the utility of p-tau for predicting the course of mood symptoms in patients with cognitive decline.

BACKGROUND: Although clozapine is effective for treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS), the rate of clozapine prescription is still low. Whereas antipsychotic monotherapy is recommended in clinical practice guidelines, the rate of antipsychotic polypharmacy is still high. There is little evidence on whether a clozapine prescription influences changes in the rate of monotherapy and polypharmacy, including antipsychotics and other psychotropics. We therefore hypothesized that the rate of antipsychotic monotherapy in patients with TRS who were prescribed clozapine would be higher than that in patients with schizophrenia who were not prescribed clozapine. METHODS: We assessed 8306 patients with schizophrenia nationwide from 178 institutions in Japan from 2016 to 2019. We analyzed the psychotropic prescription data at discharge in patients diagnosed with TRS and with no description of TRS (ND-TRS) based on the diagnosis listed in the discharge summary. RESULTS: The rate of antipsychotic monotherapy in the TRS with clozapine group (91.3%) was significantly higher than that in the TRS without clozapine group (45.9%; P < 2.0 × 10-16) and the ND-TRS without clozapine group (54.7%; P < 2.0 × 10-16). The rate of antipsychotic monotherapy without any other concomitant psychotropics in the TRS with clozapine group (26.5%) was significantly higher than that in the TRS without clozapine group (12.6%; P = 1.1 × 10-6) and the ND-TRS without clozapine group (17.0%; P = 5.9 × 10-6). CONCLUSIONS: Clozapine prescription could be associated with a high rate of antipsychotic monotherapy. Patients will benefit from the correct diagnosis of TRS and thus from proper clozapine prescription.

OBJECTIVES: Absolute or relative protein (P)C pathway abnormalities (PC deficiency, PS deficiency, antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), factor (F)V-abnormality, and high FVIII level) cause thrombophilia. Although screening assays for these thrombophilias are available, one utilizing clot waveform analysis (CWA) remains unknown. We aimed to establish a CWA-based screening assay to distinguish PC pathway abnormality-related thrombophilia. METHODS: Samples were reacted with tissue factor (TF)/phospholipids and recombinant thrombomodulin (rTM; optimal 20 nM), followed by CWA measurement. The peak ratio (with/without rTM) of the first derivative curve of clot waveform was calculated. RESULTS: The peak ratio in healthy plasmas (n = 35) was 0.36 ± 0.13; hence, the cutoff value was set to 0.49. The peak ratios in plasmas with PC deficiency, PS deficiency, high-FVIII (spiked 300 IU/dl), and APS were higher than the cutoff values (0.79/0.97/0.50/0.93, respectively). PC-deficient plasma or PS-deficient plasma mixed with normal plasma (25%/50%/75%/100% PC or PS level) showed dose-dependent decreases in the peak ratios (PC deficient: 0.85/0.64/0.44/0.28; PS deficient: 0.69/0.53/0.40/0.25), suggesting that the peak ratio at ≤50% of PC or PS level exceeded the cutoff value. The peak ratio in FV deficiency with FV ≤25% was higher than the cutoff value. FV-deficient plasma spiked with 40 IU/dl rFV-R506Q (FVLeiden ) or rFV-W1920R (FVNara ) showed >90% peak ratios. CONCLUSIONS: rTM-mediated TF-triggered CWA might be useful for screening PC pathway abnormality-related thrombophilia.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating between bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) during the depressive episode is an important clinical challenge. Reward system abnormalities have received much attention as one of the biological underpinnings of BD and MDD, but few studies have directly compared these abnormalities in remitted and depressed states. METHODS: This was a functional MRI study using the Monetary Incentive Delay task in 65 patients (BD [n = 33], MDD [n = 32]) and 33 healthy controls (HC). Regions of interest (ROI) analysis with 21 ROIs related to reward anticipation and 17 ROIs related to gain outcome were implemented, as well as whole-brain analysis. The difference in the dimensional effect of depression on brain activation was also examined. RESULTS: Relative to the HC group, BD patients showed significantly decreased activation during reward anticipation in the anterior cingulate cortex, anterior insula (AI), and putamen, and MDD patients showed significantly decreased activation in the AI and brainstem. The dimensional effect of depression severity showed a trend-level difference between BD and MDD in the right brainstem and left AI. CONCLUSIONS: The current study showed a possible differential effect of depression on the reward system between MDD and BD. Further studies on reward systems might offer reliable markers to distinguish between MDD and BD patients in the depressive phase.

AIM: Social cognition impacts social functioning in schizophrenia; however, little is known about how patients with schizophrenia themselves perceive social cognition. This study, using an internet survey, aimed to investigate their knowledge of social cognition, clinical experiences related to social cognition, awareness of social cognition's role in one's social life, and the relationships between subjective difficulties with social cognition and social functioning. METHODS: Data from 232 outpatients with schizophrenia (SZ) and 494 healthy controls (HC) were obtained through an internet survey and were weighted according to the demographics of the national population. A newly developed survey questionnaire on knowledge, experience, and awareness of social cognition was administered. Subjective difficulties were evaluated using the Self-Assessment of Social Cognition Impairments and the Observable Social Cognition Rating Scale. RESULTS: Less than a quarter of both groups were familiar with the term or concept of social cognition. Less than 5% of both groups had experienced being assessed or treated for social cognition. More than half of both groups were aware of the relationship between social cognition and social functioning. The SZ group had higher levels of subjective difficulties than the HC group across all social cognitive domains. The attributional bias domain of subjective difficulties was negatively associated with social functioning. CONCLUSION: Patients with schizophrenia had substantial subjective difficulties in social cognition, which they perceived as being related to social functioning. However, their knowledge of social cognition was limited, and the assessment and treatment might not be widespread in regular clinical practice.
