RESUMEN

With its substantial theoretical capacity, silicon (Si) is a prospective anode material for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the challenges of a substantial volume expansion and inferior conductivity in Si-based anodes restrict the electrochemical stability. To address this, a yolk-shell-structured Si-carbon composite, featuring adjustable void sizes, was synthesized using tin (Sn) as a template. A uniform coating of tin oxide (SnO2) on the surface of nano-Si particles was achieved through a simple annealing process. This approach enables the removal of the template with concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) instead of hydrofluoric acid (HF), thereby reducing toxicity and corrosiveness. The conductivity of Si@void@Carbon (Si@void@C) was further enhanced by using a high-conductivity carbon layer derived from pitch. By incorporating an internal void, this yolk-shell structure effectively enhanced the low Li+/electron conductivity and accommodated the large volume change of Si. Si@void@C demonstrated an excellent electrochemical performance, retaining a discharge capacity of 735.3 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at 1.0 A g-1. Even at a high current density of 2.0 A g-1, Si@void@C still maintained a discharge capacity of 1238.5 mAh g-1.

RESUMEN

Li2CO3 is the most tenacious parasitic solid-state product in lithium-air batteries (LABs). Developing suitable redox mediators (RMs) is an efficient way to address the Li2CO3 issue, but only a few RMs have been investigated to date, and their mechanism of action also remains elusive. Herein, we investigate the effects of the central metal ion in binuclear metal phthalocyanines on the catalysis of Li2CO3 decomposition, namely binuclear cobalt phthalocyanine (bi-CoPc) and binuclear cobalt manganese phthalocyanine (bi-CoMnPc). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the key intermediate peroxydicarbonate (*C2O62-) is stabilized by bi-CoPc2+ and bi-CoMnPc3+, which is accountable for their excellent catalytic effects. With one central metal ion substituted by manganese for cobalt, the bi-CoMnPc's second active redox couple shifts from the second Co(II)/Co(III) couple in the central metal ion to the Pc(-2)/Pc(-1) couple in the phthalocyanine ring. In artificial dry air (N2-O2, 78:22, v/v), the LAB cell with bi-CoMnPc in electrolyte exhibited 261 cycles under a fixed capacity of 500 mAh g-1carbon and current density of 100 mA g-1carbon, significantly better than the RM-free cell (62 cycles) and the cell with bi-CoPc (193 cycles).

RESUMEN

Due to its higher patency rate, a radial artery graft (RAG) is used as an interposition graft for internal-external high-flow bypass more frequently than a saphenous vein graft (SAG). Nevertheless, there are still a few cases of RAG stenosis after bypass surgery. Unfortunately, these reports do not elaborate on the treatment for RAG stenosis. Here, we report the first case of severe RAG stenosis after high-flow STAt-RA-MCA bypass, which was successfully treated with PTA. We speculated that RAG stenosis is associated with the over-length and kinking of the intracranial segment of the RAG instead of vasospasm. We elaborated on the surgical procedure and treatment experience in this particular case in detail. According to our experience, PTA is a type of surgical procedure that can be considered for treating RAG stenosis after high-flow bypass. As long as the surgical procedure can be performed well according to the distance between the stenosis and the anastomosis and the characteristics of the RA tissue, PTA is able to achieve satisfactory long-term results.

RESUMEN

Reactive hyperostosis of spheno-orbital meningiomas (SOMs) often occurred in the sphenoid wing, while osteolytic SOMs (O-SOMs) were rarely discussed. This study preliminarily evaluated the clinical characteristics of O-SOMs and analyzed prognostic factors affecting the recurrence of SOMs. We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of consecutive patients who underwent surgery for a SOM between 2015 and 2020. According to the bone changes of sphenoid wing, SOMs were divided into O-SOMs and hyperostosis SOMs (H-SOMs). A total of 31 procedures were performed in 28 patients. All cases were treated by pterional-orbital approach. It was confirmed that 8 cases were O-SOMs and the other 20 cases were H-SOMs. Total tumor resection was performed in 21 cases. There were 19 cases with Ki 67 ≥3%. The patients were followed up for 3 to 87 months. Proptosis improved in all patients. All O-SOMs had no visual deterioration, while 4 H-SOMs cases had visual deterioration. There was no significant difference in clinical outcomes between the two types of SOM. The recurrence of SOM was related to the degree of resection, but not to the type of bone lesions, invasion of cavernous sinus and Ki 67.

RESUMEN

A highly densified electrode material is desirable to achieve large volumetric capacity. However, pores acting as ion transport channels are critical for high utilization of active material. Achieving a balance between high volume density and pore utilization remains a challenge particularly for hollow materials. Herein, capillary force is employed to convert hollow fibers to a bamboo-weaving-like flexible electrode (BWFE), in which the shrinkage of hollow space results in high compactness of the electrode. The volume of the electrode can be decreased by 96% without sacrificing the gravimetric capacity. Importantly, the conductivity of BWFE after thermal treatment can reach up to 50,500 S/m which exceeds that for most other carbon materials. Detailed mechanical analysis reveals that, due to the strong interaction between nanoribbons, Young's modulus of the electrode increases by 105 times. After SnO2 active materials is impregnated, the BWFE/SnO2 electrode exhibits an exceptionally ultrahigh volumetric capacity of 2000 mAh/cm3.

RESUMEN

Although silicon is being researched as one of the most promising anode materials for future generation lithium-ion batteries owing to its greater theoretical capacity (3579 mAh g-1), its practical applicability is hampered by its worse rate properties and poor cycle performance. Herein, a silicon/graphite/amorphous carbon (Si/G/C) anode composite material has been successfully prepared by a facile spray-drying method followed by heating treatment, exhibiting excellent electrochemical performance compared with silicon/amorphous carbon (Si/C) in lithium-ion batteries. At 0.1 A g-1, the Si/G/C sample exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 1886 mAh g-1, with a high initial coulombic efficiency of 90.18%, the composite can still deliver a high initial charge capacity of 800 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1, and shows a superior cyclic and rate performance compared to the Si/C anode sample. This work provides a facile approach to synthesize Si/G/C composite for lithium-ion batteries and has proven that graphite replacing amorphous carbon can effectively improve the electrochemical performance, even using low-performance micrometer silicon and large size flake graphite.

RESUMEN

A sulfur doping strategy has been frequently used to improve the sodium storage specific capacity and rate capacity of hard carbon. However, some hard carbon materials have difficulty in preventing the shuttling effect of electrochemical products of sulfur molecules stored in the porous structure of hard carbon, resulting in the poor cycling stability of electrode materials. Here, a multifunctional coating is introduced to comprehensively improve the sodium storage performance of a sulfur-containing carbon-based anode. The physical barrier effect and chemical anchoring effect contributed by the abundant C-S/C-N polarized covalent bond of the N, S-codoped coating (NSC) combine to protect SGCS@NSC from the shuttling effect of soluble polysulfide intermediates. Additionally, the NSC layer can encapsulate the highly dispersed carbon spheres inside a cross-linked three-dimensional conductive network, improving the electrochemical kinetic of the SGCS@NSC electrode. Benefiting from the multifunctional coating, SGCS@NSC exhibits a high capacity of 609 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and 249 mAh g-1 at 6.4 A g-1. Furthermore, the capacity retention of SGCS@NSC is 17.6% higher than that of the uncoated one after 200 cycles at 0.5 A g-1.

RESUMEN

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have aroused a large amount of interest recently due to the plentiful potassium resource, which may show cost benefits over lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the huge volume expansion induced by the intercalation of large-sized potassium ions and the intrinsic sluggish kinetics of the anode hamper the application of PIBs. Herein, by rational design, nano-roses assembled from petals with a MoS2/monolayer carbon (C-MoS2) sandwiched structure were successfully synthesized. The interlayer distance of ultrathin C-MoS2 was expanded from original MoS2 of 6.2 to 9.6 Å due to the formation of the MoS2-carbon inter overlapped superstructure. This unique structure efficiently alleviates the mechanical strain, prevents the aggregation of MoS2, creates more active sites, facilitates electron transport, and enhances the specific capacity and K+ diffusion kinetics. As a result, the prepared C-MoS2-1 anode delivers a high reversible specific capacity (437 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1) and satisfying rate performance (123 mAh g-1 at 6.4 A g-1). Therefore, this work provides new insights into the design of high-performance anode materials of PIBs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Purely suprasellar and some complex intra-suprasellar Rathke cleft cysts (RCCs) are commonly treated via extended endonasal endoscopic approach or traditional transcranial approach. The feasibility of the trans-eyebrow supraorbital keyhole approach (TSKA) for RCCs was evaluated in this retrospective study. METHODS: A cohort of 16 patients (11 females and 5 males) with RCC was surgically treated via TSKA between January 2013 and November 2021. The medical data and follow-up results were analyzed. RESULTS: Eight patients had a purely suprasellar RCC, and 8 patients had an intra-suprasellar RCC with most of pituitary gland occupying the sellar floor. The mean maximal size of the cysts was 15.4 (range 7-29) mm. Postoperatively, complete cyst drainage was achieved in 15 (93.7%) patients. Preoperative headache, visual dysfunction, and hypopituitarism improved in 12 (100.0%), 3 (75.0%) and 3 (75.0%) patients, respectively, and hyperprolactinemia normalized in all patients. Except 2 (12.5%) cases of transient diabetes insipidus (TDI), no other complications were observed. During the mean follow-up period of 41.0 (range 4-102) months, 1 (6.3%) radiological recurrence was found. CONCLUSIONS: For the treatment of purely suprasellar and some intra-suprasellar RCCs with most of the pituitary occupying the sellar floor, the endoscopic TSKA has the advantage of the minimal invasiveness, excellent visualization of the intrasellar compartment, no additional damage to the underlying pituitary gland, and no risk of CSF leakage. TDI or DI is relative commonly found in treatment of these RCCs. During surgery, care should be taken to avoid damage to the surrounding structures, including the pituitary stalk.

RESUMEN

Although K+ is readily inserted into graphite, the volume expansion of graphite of up to 60% upon the formation of KC8, together with its slow diffusion kinetics, prevent graphite from being used as an anode for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Soft carbon with low crystallinity and an incompact carbon structure can overcome these shortcomings of graphite. Here, ultra-thin two-dimensional (2D) wrinkled soft carbon sheets (USCs) are demonstrated to have high specific capacity, excellent rate capability, and outstanding reversibility. The wrinkles themselves prevent the dense stacking of micron-sized sheets and provide sufficient space to accommodate the volume change of USCs during the insertion/extraction of K+. The ultra-thin property reduces strain during the formation of K-C compounds, and further maintains structural stability. The wrinkles and heteroatoms also introduce abundant edge defects that can provide more active sites and shorten the K+ migration distance, improving reaction kinetics. The optimized USC20-1 electrode exhibits a reversible capacity of 151 mAh g-1 even at 6400 mA g-1, and excellent cyclic stability up to 2500 cycles at 1000 mA g-1. Such comprehensive electrochemical performance will accelerate the adoption of PIBs in electrical energy applications.

RESUMEN

Uneven lithium (Li) electrodeposition hinders the wide application of high-energy-density Li metal batteries (LMBs). Current efforts mainly focus on the side-reaction suppression between Li and electrolyte, neglecting the determinant factor of mass transport in affecting Li deposition. Herein, guided Li+ mass transport under the action of a local electric field near magnetic nanoparticles or structures at the Li metal interface, known as the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect, are proposed to promote uniform Li deposition. The modified Li+ trajectories are revealed by COMSOL Multiphysics simulations, and verified by the compact and disc-like Li depositions on a model Fe3 O4 substrate. Furthermore, a patterned mesh with the magnetic Fe-Cr2 O3 core-shell skeleton is used as a facile and efficient protective structure for Li metal anodes, enabling Li metal batteries to achieve a Coulombic efficiency of 99.5 % over 300 cycles at a high cathode loading of 5.0 mAh cm-2 . The Li protection strategy based on the MHD interface design might open a new opportunity to develop high-energy-density LMBs.

RESUMEN

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have been considered as promising gain materials for lasing. Despite previous reports of lasing from nanocrystals, thin films and single crystals, the stability of perovskite lasers has been a challenge for its practical applications. Herein, a scalable strategy to prepare ultrastable perovskite@polymer hybrid fibers by employing a facile emulsion electrospinning approach is demonstrated. During the electrospinning process, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) first solidifies into an outer shell layer. Meanwhile, emulsion drops containing poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and perovskite precursor are pushed inward and evolve into perovskite nanocrystals covered by PVDF. The PMMA with smooth surface benefits the light transport and the water-resistant PVDF blocks the moisture. The methylammonium lead bromide perovskite-embedded fibers can emit intensive light after storage in humid ambient environment (relative humidity >60%) or even in water. Amplified spontaneous emissions from the fibers network and waveguide lasing from chopped single fiber is demonstrated.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND We aimed to investigate the functions of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) non-coding RNA activated by DNA damage (NORAD) in glioma and identify the potential mechanisms. MATERIAL AND METHODS The expression of NORAD and AKR1B1 in human glioma cell lines were examined using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Then, cell proliferation, invasion, and migration were tested by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), colony formation assay, Transwell, and scratch wound healing assay after NORAD silencing. Meanwhile, western blotting was utilized to measure the expression of migration-related proteins. Apoptosis of glioma cells was detected using flow cytometry and apoptosis-related proteins expression was determined. Moreover, the correlation between NORAD and AKR1B1 was verified by RNA-binding protein immunoprecipitation (RIP assay). After co-transfection with AKR1B1 overexpressed plasmid and NORAD siRNA, cell proliferation, invasion, migration, and apoptosis were examined again. Furthermore, the expression of proteins in extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling was tested using western blotting. RESULTS The results revealed that NORAD and AKR1B1 were highly expressed in glioma cells. NORAD silencing inhibited proliferation, invasion and migration but promoted apoptosis of glioma cells, accompanied by the expression changes of migration- and apoptosis-related proteins. However, after co-transfection with AKR1B1 pcDNA3.1 in NORAD silencing cells, the effects of NORAD silencing on proliferation, invasion, migration, and apoptosis were attenuated. Consistently, the expression of phosphorylated ERK (p-ERK) was decreased after NORAD silencing, which were reversed following AKR1B1 overexpression. CONCLUSIONS These findings demonstrated that NORAD silencing suppressed proliferation, invasion, and migration and boosted apoptosis of glioma cells via downregulating the AKR1B1 expression, which may provide a potential therapeutic target for glioma treatment.

RESUMEN

Huangjing (Polygonatum sibiricum) is a medicinal plant widely distributed in China, Japan, and Korea. The dried rhizome of Huangjing has been reported to have many pharmacological applications and biological activities, such as antioxidants, immunity enhancement, anti-fatigue, anti-osteoporosis, and anti-aging activity (Cui et al., 2018). In June 2018, we observed some wilted Huangjing plants in commercial plantings in Shuicheng, Guizhou, China (26.22 N, 104.76 E). Symptoms began as moderate to severe wilting of stems and necrosis of leaves, followed by the death of plants. The collar rot appeared on the stem near to the soil. When incubated at 28°C and 100% relative humidity (RH) for 8 to 10 days, the infected stem produced brown sclerotia. We picked the sclerotia and cultured them on potato dextrose agar (PDA) supplemented with 50 µg/ml of streptomycin. The hyphal tips generated by the sclerotia was isolated under microscopic field and transferred to the fresh PDA. Three isolates (HJ-1, HJ-6 and HJ-10) came from the hyphal tips formed the typical clamp connection structure at 6-7 days post-incubation and the sclerotia of them were white and the late ones turned dark brown. The matured sclerotia were globular, 1.5 to 3.3 mm (avg. 2.2) in diameter. The morphologic observation revealed that three isolates were consistent with Athelia rolfsii (Paul et al., 2017). To further confirm the fungal species, the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences were amplified and sequenced. Primers and PCR amplification were referenced as previously described (Paul et al., 2017). The sequences were compared to type sequences in GenBank. The ITS sequences (GenBank accession MT478452, MT949696 and MT949697) of the isolates (HJ-10, HJ-1 and HJ-6) were 99% identical with strain 13M-0091 (GenBank accession KT222898) of A. rolfsii, respectively (Paul et al., 2017). A maximum likelihood tree was constructed using MEGA-X version 10.1.6 (Kumar et al., 2018) based on the ITS sequences of the three strains (HJ-10, HJ-1 and HJ-6) and that of Athelia spp. previously deposited in GenBank (Paul et al., 2017). Phylogenetic analysis showed that the isolates (HJ-10, HJ-1 and HJ-6) belong to the A. rolfsii clade. Based on morphology and DNA sequencing, the isolates (HJ-10, HJ-1 and HJ-6) were identified as A. rolfsii. To verify pathogenicity, Huangjing seedlings were inoculated with colonized agar discs of the isolates. Additional Huangjing plants inoculated with uncolonized agar discs were used as the control. After inoculation, Huangjing seedlings were moved to the inoculation chamber under high humidity and 28°C for 3 days and then transferred to a greenhouse. The typical wilting symptoms appeared 8 days after inoculation and were similar to those observed in the field, while control plants remained symptomless. The causing agents were isolated from the lesions and the ITS sequences of them were sequenced again. The alignment analysis of the ITS sequences showed the causing agents are consistent with the original isolates. These studies fulfilled Koch's postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of A. rolfsii causing stem rot on Huangjing.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The surgical procedure most appropriate for treating symptomatic Riles type 1A common carotid artery occlusion (CCAO) is unclear. This study compares the effects of ring-stripping retrograde endarterectomy (RSRE) and carotid artery crossover bypass (CACB) on cerebral perfusion improvement in patients with symptomatic Riles type 1A CCAO. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of symptomatic Riles type 1A CCAO patients treated at our centre. Postoperative improvements in the ipsilateral internal carotid artery (ICA) flow rate, ipsilateral cerebral blood perfusion (CBP) and the stroke recurrence rate were compared between patients who underwent RSRE and those who underwent CACB. RESULTS: A total of 20 CCAO patients were surgically treated at our centre from 2011 to 2018. Nine of these patients underwent RSRE, and eleven underwent CACB. No significant differences were identified between the groups in the ipsilateral blood flow rate of the ICA immediately after surgery and the ipsilateral-to-contralateral mean transit time ratios 1 day after surgery. However, the flow rate in the ICA was significantly higher in the RSRE group than in the CACB group 1 year after surgery (135.44 ± 19.22 ml/min vs. 116.36 ± 17.70 ml/min, p = 0.033). For CBP, the ipsilateral-to-contralateral mean transit time ratios were significantly lower in RSRE patients than in CACB patients 1 year after surgery (1.005 ± 0.052 vs. 1.064 ± 0.066, p = 0.044). In addition, the postoperative modified Rankin scale (mRS) score at the latest follow-up point (p = 0.884) and the stroke recurrence rate during the follow-up (88.9% vs. 90.9%, p > 0.999) were not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Although the postoperative mRS score and the stroke recurrence rate were not significantly different between RSRE and CACB patients, compared to CACB, RSRE was better for improving the ipsilateral ICA flow rate and cerebral perfusion in symptomatic Riles type 1A CCAO patients.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The infratemporal fossa (ITF) is located deep in the skull base. Recently, the endoscopic transoral approach has enabled maxillofacial surgeons to access the ITF using a less invasive approach compared to the traditional transfacial and endonasal endoscopic approaches. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to provide maxillofacial surgeons with new data concerning direct endoscopic measurement and precise anatomical topography features of the endoscopic trans-lateral molar approach to ITF by comparing the endoscopic and regional anatomy of ITF. A clinical case receiving the proposed surgical approach is used to determine the feasibility of this technique. METHOD: The anatomical data were obtained by measuring the bone anatomical landmarks and analyzing the CT imaging data using GE's Advance Windows 4.1 software on 25 subjects (50 sides). Morphological pictures of the regional anatomy and endoscopic anatomy were obtained from 6 (12 sides) adult cadaver heads, and the anatomical features were described. The present study reports the management of one case using the proposed surgical approach. RESULTS: The proposed surgical approach clearly revealed neurovascular, muscular, and surgical landmarks in the ITF. The surgical case supports the minimally invasive treatment approach, which could rapidly access the ITF and completely excise benign tumors. CONCLUSION: The anatomical studies and surgical case presentation helps us understand the spatial relationship of surgical landmarks of the surgical approach to the ITF for the treatment of benign lesions in the deep cranial base area.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to review 15 consecutive patients with anterior circulation aneurysms managed through a contralateral approach. Individualized surgical simulation using three-dimensional (3D) imaging was adopted to enable safe performance of clipping surgery. METHODS: Five patients had multiple intracranial aneurysms, and 10 patients had a single aneurysm on the contralateral side of the craniotomy. Preoperatively, the unique architecture of aneurysms was fully understood in their 3-dimensionality reconstructed by Mimics software. The location of the cranial bone window and the patient's head position was individually optimized using a preoperative simulation system. RESULTS: In this cohort, 17 contralateral aneurysms showed no wall calcifications. Projections of the aneurysms were superomedial (3/17, 17.6%), medial (8/17, 47.1%), posterior (3/17, 17.6%), and superior (3/17, 17.6%). The visual similarity between the simulating scene and the operative view was excellent in 100% of the cases. Four patients were treated with a contralateral pterional approach, and the remaining 11 patients were treated with a contralateral supraorbital keyhole approach. All of them were well-clipped, except 1 blister-like aneurysm being wrapped. All 15 patients had good outcomes (mRS ≤ 3) after a mean 13 months follow-up. There were no recurrences after surgical treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The contralateral approach for the selected anterior circulation aneurysms is feasible in experienced hands with acceptable morbidity. This approach should be the choice only under judicious case-to-case planning based on a preoperative 3D virtual osteotomy technique.

RESUMEN

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides are widely studied as anode materials for metal ion batteries. This application requires high electric conductivity which can be achieved by forming composites with conductive carbon. In this work, we demonstrate the creation of nanospheres composed of Mo-based thin nanosheets (MoS2, MoSe2 and Mo2C) uniform embedded within a N-doped carbon matrix. Using MoSe2/N-doped carbon nanospheres as an example, we investigate in detail the electrochemical property in Na ion storage and reveal the advantage over previously reported MoSe2 electrodes (higher capacity and improved capacity retention up to 500 cycles). Furthermore, we provide evidence by ex situ x-ray diffraction to the nominal irreversible conversion reaction during the first discharge.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Osteoplastic craniotomy in retrosigmoid approaches to the cerebellopontine angle region has been suggested as an alternative to traditional osteoclastic craniectomy. It is important both for prevention of postoperative complications and for cosmetic purposes. The authors investigated a safe and effective method of cranial reconstruction by repositioning a 1-step formed bone flap without bone window extension in lateral suboccipital craniotomy. METHODS: Twenty-three cases of various cerebellopontine angle pathologies, managed at the Department of Neurosurgery of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University from January 2011 to November 2011, had bone-flap repositioning at the original site after craniectomy during the same operative setting. All patients had preoperative three-dimensional computed tomography reconstruction of the skull. Anatomical markers were made in three-dimensional images, and individualized bone windows were designed. During operation, a 1-step formed bone flap was made according to the preoperative simulation scheme. After the intradural procedure was completed, the bone flap was repositioned and fixed in situ. RESULTS: No complication was observed. No delayed postcraniectomy pain occurred to any patient. Postoperative computed tomography scan of the skull showed good healing and shaping of the suboccipital bone at the surgical region. CONCLUSIONS: The present report provides acceptable results both clinically and radiologically. More comparative studies are required to evaluate possible advantages of this technique over osteoclastic craniectomy.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: For unilateral Dodge Class Ⅰ optic pathway glioma (OPG-uDCⅠ) without neurofibromatosis type 1, unilateral isolated optic nerve gliomas before the optic chiasm have been confirmed to possibly cause visual deterioration and poor prognosis. For this type of highly selective localized tumor, we explored surgery as the only treatment method. This article retrospectively analyzed and summarized the clinical data of this case series, with the aim of exploring the main technical details and clinical prognosis. METHODS: Included were patients with OPG-uDCⅠ without neurofibromatosis type 1 and experiencing vision loss on the affected side. The fronto-orbital approach was used, which was mainly divided into 3 parts: intraorbital, optic canal, and intracranial. All patients underwent prechiasmatic resection without any adjuvant treatments. The follow-up period was 3 months after surgery, and magnetic resonance imaging and contralateral visual acuity were reviewed annually after surgery. RESULTS: All OPG-uDCⅠ cases were completely removed without any adjuvant treatments, and there was no recurrence during the follow-up period. Pathological results showed that, except for 1 adult patient with pilomyxoid astrocytoma (World Health Organization grade Ⅱ), the others all had pilocytic astrocytoma (World Health Organization grade Ⅰ). Five patients experienced transient ptosis, and all recovered 3 months after surgery. CONCLUSIONS: For OPG-uDCⅠ without neurofibromatosis type 1, radical prechiasmatic resection of the tumor is possible, without the need for postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
