RESUMEN

Moyamoya disease, a cerebrovascular disease leading to strokes in children and young adults, is characterized by progressive occlusion of the distal internal carotid arteries and the formation of collateral vessels. Altered genes play a prominent role in the aetiology of moyamoya disease, but a causative gene is not identified in the majority of cases. Exome sequencing data from 151 individuals from 84 unsolved families were analysed to identify further genes for moyamoya disease, then candidate genes assessed in additional cases (150 probands). Two families had the same rare variant in ANO1, which encodes a calcium-activated chloride channel, anoctamin-1. Haplotype analyses found the families were related, and ANO1 p.Met658Val segregated with moyamoya disease in the family with an LOD score of 3.3. Six additional ANO1 rare variants were identified in moyamoya disease families. The ANO1 rare variants were assessed using patch-clamp recordings, and the majority of variants, including ANO1 p.Met658Val, displayed increased sensitivity to intracellular Ca2+. Patients harbouring these gain-of-function ANO1 variants had classic features of moyamoya disease, but also had aneurysm, stenosis and/or occlusion in the posterior circulation. Our studies support that ANO1 gain-of-function pathogenic variants predispose to moyamoya disease and are associated with unique involvement of the posterior circulation.

Neurodegeneration is linked to the progressive loss of neural function and is associated with several diseases. Hypoxia is a hallmark in many of these diseases, and several therapies have been developed to treat this disease, including gene expression therapies that should be tightly controlled to avoid side effects. Cells experiencing hypoxia undergo a series of physiological responses that are induced by the activation of various transcription factors. Modulation of microRNA (miRNA) expression to alter transcriptional regulation has been demonstrated to be beneficial in treating multiple diseases, and in this study, we therefore explored potential miRNA candidates that could influence hypoxia-induced nerve cell death. Our data suggest that in mouse neuroblasts Neuro-2a cells with hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R), miR-337-3p is downregulated to increase the expression of Potassium channel tetramerization domain containing 11 (KCTD11) and subsequently promote apoptosis. Here, we demonstrate for the first time that KCTD11 plays a role in the cellular response to hypoxia, and we also provide a possible regulatory mechanism by identifying the axis of miR-337-3p/KCTD11 as a promising candidate modulator of nerve cell survival after H/R exposure.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most deadly and metastatic cancers of the urinary tract. Latest studies have confirmed that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a crucial role in a variety of cancers. Some of these lncRNAs code for small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs), called small nucleolar RNA host genes (SNHGs), which exert some value in predicting the prognosis of certain cancer patients, but little is known regarding the function of SNHGs within the PCa. AIM OF THE STUDY: To explore the expression distribution and differential analysis of SNHGs in different tumors using RNA-seq and survival data from TCGA and GTEx, and to assess the potential impacts of the lncRNA SNHG25 on human PCa. To validate the expression of SNHG25 using experimental data and to investigate in detail its particular molecular biological function on PCa both in vivo and in vitro. METHODS: LncRNA SNHG25 expression was analyzed by bioinformatic prediction and qPCR. CCK-8, EdU, transwell, wound healing, and western blotting assays were conducted to investigate the main role of lncRNA SNHG25 in PCa. Xenograft tumour growth model in nude mice was surveyed by in vivo imaging and Ki-67 staining. AKT pathway activator (SC79) was used to verify the interaction among SNHG25 and PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. RESULTS: Bioinformatics analysis and experimental research illuminated that the expression of lncRNA SNHG25 was observably up-regulated in PCa tissues and cells. Moreover, SNHG25 knockdown restrained PCa cell proliferation, invasion and migration, while promoting apoptosis. Xenografts model confirmed that the si-SNHG25 group had a significant inhibitory effect on PCa tumour growth in vivo. Additionally, a series of gain-of-function analyses suggested that SNHG25 could activate the PI3K/AKT pathway to accelerate PCa progression. CONCLUSIONS: These in vitro and in vivo findings demonstrate that SNHG25 is highly expressed in PCa and facilitates PCa development through regulation of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. SNHG25 acts as an oncogene to predict tumour malignancy and survival in PCa patients and may therefore become a promising potential molecular target for early detection and therapy of lethal PCa.

Mental health deterioration after a disaster is a concern. Individuals' sociability is expected to relate to the risk of this deterioration; however, research focusing on older adults is lacking. We aimed to investigate the relationship between psychological distress and sociability in older adults who survived the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. We conducted a self-reported questionnaire survey in 2020. Data on 3,588 people aged 65 years and over (2,024 women and 1,564 men, mean age 74.6 ± 7.2, mean ± standard deviation) were analyzed. The overall prevalence of psychological distress (the Kessler psychological distress scale: K6 ≧ 10) was 10.5%; by gender, it was 11.2% in women and 9.5% in men. Logistic regression analysis revealed that, in the total sample, age, gender, public housing, reduction in income resulting from the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, self-rated unhealthy conditions, subjective social isolation, and a lack of awareness of community events were positively associated with psychological distress. For women, a lack of community participation was positively related to psychological distress. For men, not knowing the change in school district after relocation was negatively associated with psychological distress, probably due to men's scarce community participation and reliance on friendships, compared to women's stronger dependence on community. Moreover, having a family member or friend to consult with was associated with a lower risk of psychological distress, regardless of gender. Gender differences were related to different conditions of social participation and types of social relationships. Enhancing community participation and family relationships among women and social contact with friends among men is essential.

Responsible gambling (RG) refers to a set of protective strategies aiming at containing the negative consequences associated with gambling. To improve the effectiveness of RG, it is essential to understand factors influencing gamblers' adherence to RG. Past literatures on addictive behaviors have demonstrated that one's self-efficacy and self-esteem are associated with the adherence to protective behaviors of the specific addictive behaviors. The present study aims to test whether gamblers' self-esteem and RG self-efficacy can be applied to explain their adherence to protective gambling behaviors. Two hundred and thirty-six past-year gamblers were randomly selected to take part in a phone survey. Path analysis showed that both gamblers' RG self-efficacy and self-esteem were positively associated with gamblers' RG behaviors, while RG behaviors were negatively linked to the problem gambling tendency. The findings provided insight into potential promotion and intervention strategies based on self-esteem and self-efficacy and those strategies may be adopted in the primary prevention of gambling disorder.

Current studies have found that low-dose irradiation (IR) can promote bone regeneration. However, mechanism studies of IR-triggered bone regeneration mainly focus on the effects of osteoblasts, neglecting the role of the surrounding immune microenvironment. Here in this study, in vitro proliferation experiments showed that low-dose IR ≤2 Gy could promote the proliferation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), and qRT-PCR assay showed that low-dose IR ≤2 Gy could exert the M2 polarization of Raw264.7 cells, while IR >2 Gy inhibited BMSC proliferation and triggered M1 polarization in Raw264.7 cells. The ALP and mineralized nodules staining showed that low-dose IR ≤2 Gy not only promoted osteoblast mineralization through IR-triggered osteoblast proliferation but also through M2 polarization of Raw264.7 cells, while high-dose IR >2 Gy had the opposite effect. The co-incubation of BMSC with low-dose IR irradiated Raw264.7 cell supernatants increased the mRNA expression of BMP-2 and Osx. The rat cranial defects model revealed that low-dose IR ≤2 Gy gradually promoted bone regeneration, while high-dose IR >2 Gy inhibited bone regeneration. Detection of macrophage polarity in peripheral blood samples showed that low-dose IR ≤2 Gy increased the expression of CD206 and CD163, but decreased the expression of CD86 and CD80 in macrophages, which indicated M2 polarization of macrophages in vivo, while high-dose IR had the opposite effect. Our finding innovatively revealed that low-dose IR ≤2 Gy promotes bone regeneration not only by directly promoting the proliferation of osteoblasts but also by triggering M2 polarization of macrophages, which provided a new perspective for immune mechanism study in the treatment of bone defects with low-dose IR.

In the context of infectious disease transmission, high heterogeneity in individual infectiousness indicates that a few index cases can generate large numbers of secondary cases, a phenomenon commonly known as superspreading. The potential of disease superspreading can be characterized by describing the distribution of secondary cases (of each seed case) as a negative binomial (NB) distribution with the dispersion parameter, k. Based on the feature of NB distribution, there must be a proportion of individuals with individual reproduction number of almost 0, which appears restricted and unrealistic. To overcome this limitation, we generalized the compound structure of a Poisson rate and included an additional parameter, and divided the reproduction number into independent and additive fixed and variable components. Then, the secondary cases followed a Delaporte distribution. We demonstrated that the Delaporte distribution was important for understanding the characteristics of disease transmission, which generated new insights distinct from the NB model. By using real-world dataset, the Delaporte distribution provides improvements in describing the distributions of COVID-19 and SARS cases compared to the NB distribution. The model selection yielded increasing statistical power with larger sample sizes as well as conservative type I error in detecting the improvement in fitting with the likelihood ratio (LR) test. Numerical simulation revealed that the control strategy-making process may benefit from monitoring the transmission characteristics under the Delaporte framework. Our findings highlighted that for the COVID-19 pandemic, population-wide interventions may control disease transmission on a general scale before recommending the high-risk-specific control strategies.

Aminophenols are a class of important compounds with various pharmacological activities such as anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, and antibacterial activities. Herein, we introduce a mild and efficient electrochemical selenium-catalyzed strategy to synthesize polysubstituted aminophenols. High atom efficiency and transition metal-free and oxidant-free conditions are the striking features of this protocol. By merging electrochemical and organoselenium-catalyzed processes, the intramolecular rearrangement of N-aryloxyamides produces para-amination products at room temperature in a simple undivided cell.

Heat shock protein family A (HSP70) member 5 (HSPA5) is aberrantly expressed in various tumors and closely associated with the progression and prognosis of cancer. Nevertheless, its role in bladder cancer (BCa) remains elusive. The results of our study demonstrated that HSPA5 was upregulated in BCa and correlated with patient prognosis. Cell lines with low expression level of HSPA5 were constructed to explore the role of this protein in BCa. HSPA5 knockdown promoted apoptosis and retarded the proliferation, migration and invasion of BCa cells by regulating the VEGFA/VEGFR2 signaling pathway. In addition, overexpression of VEGFA alleviated the negative effect of HSPA5 downregulation. Moreover, we found that HSPA5 could inhibit the process of ferroptosis through the P53/SLC7A11/GPX4 pathway. Hence, HSPA5 can facilitate the progression of BCa and may be used as a novel biomarker and latent therapeutic target in the clinic.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical phenotypes and genetic variants of a Chinese pedigree affected with Hereditary coagulation factor Ⅻ (FⅫ) deficiency. METHODS: A pedigree presented at the First Affiliated Hospital of Air Force Medical University on December 24,2021 was selected as the study subject. Activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and coagulation factor Ⅻ activity (FⅫ:C) were determine by a clotting method, and FⅫ antigen was detected with an ELISA assay. Following the extraction of genomic DNA, all exons and flanking regions of the F12 gene were subjected to Sanger sequencing. Clustalx-2.1-win, PROVEAN and Swiss-PDB Viewer software was used to analyze the conservation of amino acids at the variant sites, impact of of the variants on the amino acid substitutions and the protein structure. RESULTS: The APTT of the proband has prolonged to 70.2 s. Her FⅫ:C and FⅫ:Ag have decreased to 12% and 13%, respectively. DNA sequencing revealed that the proband has harbored c.346G>A (p.Gly97Ser) and c.1583C>A (p.Ser509Tyr) heterozygous compound missense variants in exons 5 and 13 of the F12 gene, respectively. Her father and sister were heterozygous carriers for the c.346G>A (p.Gly97Ser) variant, whilst her mother and brother were heterozygous for the c.1583C>A (p.Ser509Tyr) variant. CONCLUSION: The c.346G>A (p.Gly97Ser) and c.1583C>A (p.Ser509Tyr) compound heterozygous variants of the F12 gene probably underlay the pathogenesis of hereditary coagulation FⅫ deficiency in this pedigree.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, genetic mutations in SARS-CoV-2 emerge, and some of them are found more contagious than the previously identified strains, acting as the major mechanism for many large-scale epidemics. The transmission advantage of mutated variants is widely believed as an innate biological feature that is difficult to be altered by artificial factors. In this study, we explore how non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI) may affect transmission advantage. A two-strain compartmental epidemic model is proposed and simulated to investigate the biological mechanism of the relationships among different NPIs, the changes in transmissibility of each strain and transmission advantage. Although the NPIs are effective in flattening the epidemic curve, we demonstrate that NPIs probably lead to a decline in transmission advantage, which is likely to occur if the NPIs become intensive. Our findings uncover the mechanistic relationship between NPIs and transmission advantage dynamically, and highlight the important role of NPIs not only in controlling the intensity of epidemics but also in slowing or even containing the growth of the proportion of variants.

In modern radiotherapy, error reduction in the patients' daily setup error is important for achieving accuracy. In our study, we proposed a new approach for the development of an assist system for the radiotherapy position setup by using augmented reality (AR). We aimed to improve the accuracy of the position setup of patients undergoing radiotherapy and to evaluate the error of the position setup of patients who were diagnosed with head and neck cancer, and that of patients diagnosed with chest and abdomen cancer. We acquired the patient's simulation CT data for the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the external surface and organs. The AR tracking software detected the calibration module and loaded the 3D virtual model. The calibration module was aligned with the Linac isocenter by using room lasers. And then aligned the virtual cube with the calibration module to complete the calibration of the 3D virtual model and Linac isocenter. Then, the patient position setup was carried out, and point cloud registration was performed between the patient and the 3D virtual model, such the patient's posture was consistent with the 3D virtual model. Twenty patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer and 20 patients diagnosed with chest and abdomen cancer in the supine position setup were analyzed for the residual errors of the conventional laser and AR-guided position setup. Results show that for patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer, the difference between the two positioning methods was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). For patients diagnosed with chest and abdomen cancer, the residual errors of the two positioning methods in the superior and inferior direction and anterior and posterior direction were statistically significant (t = -5.80, -4.98, P < 0.05). The residual errors in the three rotation directions were statistically significant (t = -2.29 to -3.22, P < 0.05). The experimental results showed that the AR technology can effectively assist in the position setup of patients undergoing radiotherapy, significantly reduce the position setup errors in patients diagnosed with chest and abdomen cancer, and improve the accuracy of radiotherapy.

As a prevention tool for mosquito-borne diseases, mosquito repellents have received substantial attention. To make a convincing recommendation for repellent products to Chinese consumers, we compared the protection time (landing time and probing time) of the 26 best-selling commercial repellents in the Chinese market in a controlled laboratory environment. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA. Meanwhile, prices and favorable rates of repellents are also taken into consideration. In our study, N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET)-based products provided the longest protection time (0.5-3.88 h landing time and/or 1-5.63 h probing time) and lower prices (13.9-21.9 yuan) than other components (ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate (IR3535), picaridin, and botanical. Among the 26 selected products, only 17 repellents showed repellency, and the best repellent was Green Jungle (15% DEET), with a mean (±SD) landing and/or probing time of 3.88 ± 1.65 h and/or 5.63 ± 0.36 h. For botanicals, only ICE King, OMNIbaby, and Ren He showed a little repellency. Autan (20% picaridin) performed best in the picaridin group. Run Ben (7% IR3535) stood out from the IR3535 group. In conclusion, DEET repellent is highly recommended to consumers. The combination of botanicals and synthesized chemicals is a new prospect for eco-friendly repellents.

By bridging theoretical perspectives from diverse disciplines including public relations, organizational communication, psychology, and management, this study advances a sequential mediation process model that links leaders' motivational communication-specifically, direction-giving, empathetic, and meaning-making language-to employees' organizational engagement during times of crisis. The model incorporates employees' psychological needs satisfaction and their subsequent crisis coping strategies so as to explain the process that underlies the effects of leader communication on employee engagement. We tested the model in a unique yet underexplored crisis context: organizational crises triggered by the global pandemic of COVID-19. The results of an online survey of 490 full-time U.S. employees provide strong support to the model's predictions. Our research extends internal crisis communication scholarship in public relations by addressing what types of leader communication strategies as well as how these strategies contribute to employee engagement in a holistic fashion. It also advances theoretical development of the motivational language theory, self-determination theory, transactional model of stress and coping, and organizational engagement-the four theoretical bases of our study-in the context of organizational crises. Lastly, the study results provide timely practical insights on effective internal crisis communication.

To investigate whether hyperpolarised xenon-129 MRI (HXeMRI) enables regional and physiological resolution of diffusing capacity limitations in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), we evaluated 34 COPD subjects and 11 healthy volunteers. We report significant correlations between airflow abnormality quantified by HXeMRI and per cent predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s; HXeMRI gas transfer capacity to red blood cells and carbon monoxide diffusion capacity (%DLCO); and HXeMRI gas transfer capacity to interstitium and per cent emphysema quantified by multidetector chest CT. We further demonstrate the capability of HXeMRI to distinguish varying pathology underlying COPD in subjects with low %DLCO and minimal emphysema.

PURPOSE: To characterize the differences between histogram-based and image-based algorithms for segmentation of hyperpolarized gas lung images. METHODS: Four previously published histogram-based segmentation algorithms (ie, linear binning, hierarchical k-means, fuzzy spatial c-means, and a Gaussian mixture model with a Markov random field prior) and an image-based convolutional neural network were used to segment 2 simulated data sets derived from a public (n = 29 subjects) and a retrospective collection (n = 51 subjects) of hyperpolarized 129Xe gas lung images transformed by common MRI artifacts (noise and nonlinear intensity distortion). The resulting ventilation-based segmentations were used to assess algorithmic performance and characterize optimization domain differences in terms of measurement bias and precision. RESULTS: Although facilitating computational processing and providing discriminating clinically relevant measures of interest, histogram-based segmentation methods discard important contextual spatial information and are consequently less robust in terms of measurement precision in the presence of common MRI artifacts relative to the image-based convolutional neural network. CONCLUSIONS: Direct optimization within the image domain using convolutional neural networks leverages spatial information, which mitigates problematic issues associated with histogram-based approaches and suggests a preferred future research direction. Further, the entire processing and evaluation framework, including the newly reported deep learning functionality, is available as open source through the well-known Advanced Normalization Tools ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: Most existing algorithms have been focused on the segmentation from several public Liver CT datasets scanned regularly (no pneumoperitoneum and horizontal supine position). This study primarily segmented datasets with unconventional liver shapes and intensities deduced by contrast phases, irregular scanning conditions, different scanning objects of pigs and patients with large pathological tumors, which formed the multiple heterogeneity of datasets used in this study. METHODS: The multiple heterogeneous datasets used in this paper includes: (1) One public contrast-enhanced CT dataset and one public non-contrast CT dataset; (2) A contrast-enhanced dataset that has abnormal liver shape with very long left liver lobes and large-sized liver tumors with abnormal presets deduced by microvascular invasion; (3) One artificial pneumoperitoneum dataset under the pneumoperitoneum and three scanning profiles (horizontal/left/right recumbent position); (4) Two porcine datasets of Bama type and domestic type that contains pneumoperitoneum cases but with large anatomy discrepancy with humans. The study aimed to investigate the segmentation performances of 3D U-Net in: (1) generalization ability between multiple heterogeneous datasets by cross-testing experiments; (2) the compatibility when hybrid training all datasets in different sampling and encoder layer sharing schema. We further investigated the compatibility of encoder level by setting separate level for each dataset (i.e., dataset-wise convolutions) while sharing the decoder. RESULTS: Model trained on different datasets has different segmentation performance. The prediction accuracy between LiTS dataset and Zhujiang dataset was about 0.955 and 0.958 which shows their good generalization ability due to that they were all contrast-enhanced clinical patient datasets scanned regularly. For the datasets scanned under pneumoperitoneum, their corresponding datasets scanned without pneumoperitoneum showed good generalization ability. Dataset-wise convolution module in high-level can improve the dataset unbalance problem. The experimental results will facilitate researchers making solutions when segmenting those special datasets. CONCLUSIONS: (1) Regularly scanned datasets is well generalized to irregularly ones. (2) The hybrid training is beneficial but the dataset imbalance problem always exits due to the multi-domain homogeneity. The higher levels encoded more domain specific information than lower levels and thus were less compatible in terms of our datasets.

Magnetic covalent organic framework nanocomposite denoted as Fe3O4@TAPB-Tp with core-shell structure was fabricated via a simple template-mediated precipitation polymerization method at mild conditions. The polyimine network shell was created through the polymerization of 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)-benzene (TAPB) and 1,3,5-triformyl-phloroglucinol (Tp) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) by the Schiff-base reaction. Featuring with large specific surface area (163.19 m2 g-1), good solution dispersibility, and high stability, the obtained Fe3O4@TAPB-Tp exhibited high adsorption capacities and fast adsorption for zearalenone and its derivatives (ZEAs). The adsorption isotherms showed multilayer adsorption dominated at low concentration and monolayer adsorption at high concentration between the interface of ZEAs and Fe3O4@TAPB-Tp. With the Fe3O4@TAPB-Tp as sorbent, a magnetic solid-phase extraction-ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method was established for simultaneous adsorption and detection of five ZEAs in complex samples. The proposed method displayed favorable linearity, low limits of detection (0.003 ~ 0.018 µg kg-1), and good repeatability (2.37~10.4%). The developed method has been applied for real sample analysis, with recoveries of 81.27~90.26%. These results showed that Fe3O4@TAPB-Tp has a good application potential for the adsorption of ZEAs in food samples. Magnetic covalent organic framework nanocomposite (Fe3O4@TAPB-Tp) were quickly fabricated at mild conditions and used as effective adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction of zearalenone and its derivatives (ZEAs) from food samples prior to ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) analysis.

Chloride is the major free anion in the extracellular space (>100 mM) and within the cytoplasm in eukaryotes (10 ∼ 20 mM). Cytoplasmic Cl- level is dynamically regulated by Cl- channels and transporters. It is well established that movement of Cl- across the cell membrane is coupled with cell excitability through changes in membrane potential and with water secretion. However, whether cytoplasmic Cl- plays additional roles in animal development and tissue homeostasis is unknown. Here we use genetics, cell biological and pharmacological tools to demonstrate that TMEM16A, an evolutionarily conserved calcium-activated chloride channel (CaCC), regulates cytoplasmic Cl- homeostasis and promotes plasma membrane remodeling required for mammalian epithelial morphogenesis. We demonstrate that TMEM16A-mediated control of cytoplasmic Cl- regulates the organization of the major phosphoinositide species PtdIns(4,5)P2 into microdomains on the plasma membrane, analogous to processes that cluster soluble and membrane proteins into phase-separated droplets. We further show that an adequate cytoplasmic Cl- level is required for proper endocytic trafficking and membrane supply during early stages of ciliogenesis and adherens junction remodeling. Our study thus uncovers a critical function of CaCC-mediated cytoplasmic Cl- homeostasis in controlling the organization of PtdIns(4,5)P2 microdomains and membrane remodeling. This newly defined role of cytoplasmic Cl- may shed light on the mechanisms of intracellular Cl- signaling events crucial for regulating tissue architecture and organelle biogenesis during animal development.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of short-term postoperative continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on the outcomes of velopharyngeal surgery for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 119 OSA patients who underwent velopharyngeal surgery. Based on the results of postoperative pulse oximetry, the patients were divided into 3 groups: intervention, control, and observation. Patients with oxygen desaturation index (ODI) > 10 and lowest SpO2 < 90% were randomly assigned to the CPAP intervention group and non-CPAP control. Patients with ODI ≤10 or lowest SpO2 ≥ 90% were assigned to the non-CPAP observation group. Patients in the intervention group completed at least 3 months of CPAP treatment. Postoperative polysomnography data were compared to assess the difference of prognosis between the three groups. RESULTS: Baseline data showed no significant differences between the three groups except the observational group showed a significantly larger tonsil size relative to the intervention and control groups. However, there was no significant difference in terms of tonsil size between the control and intervention groups. The surgical success rate of the intervention group was 80.65%, whereas it was 55.17% in the control group, with significant difference. The success rate of the observation group was 85.71% which was significantly different from that of the control group, but not the intervention group. CONCLUSION: Short-term postoperative CPAP treatment may improve the outcomes of velopharyngeal surgery for OSA in patients who have respiratory events related hypoxia after surgery. Further studies are necessary for the underlying mechanisms.
