RESUMEN

This study aimed to identify and characterize integrons among multidrug-resistant (MDR) uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) from outpatients in Mexico City, Mexico. PCR assays were used to screen for the presence of class 1, 2 and 3 integrons, whose PCR products were sequenced to identify the inserted gene cassettes within the variable regions. Out of 83 tested strains, 53 (63.9%) were positive for the presence of class 1 integrons, whereas no integrons were detected in the remaining strains, regardless of their classes. Most of the strains carrying the intI1 gene belonged to the extraintestinal B2 (41.5%) and commensal A (32.1%) phylogroups, and to a lesser extent, the extraintestinal D (20.8%) and commensal B1 (5.7%) phylogroups. Moreover, 8 different gene cassette arrangements were detected, with dfrA17 and aadA5 being the most common (32.1% of the class 1 integron-positive strains), which confer resistance to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and aminoglycosides, respectively. Our results suggest that class 1 integrons are widely distributed among MDR-UPEC strains in Mexico, which may directly or indirectly contribute to the selection of MDR strains. These findings are important for a better understanding of the factors and mechanisms that promote multidrug resistance among UPEC strains.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Effective smoking cessation programs exist but are underutilized by smokers, especially by disadvantaged smokers. Cessation interventions in dental settings have been shown to be effective, but are not consistently delivered due to provider burden and lack of training, especially on how to counsel smokers who are not motivated to quit. METHODS: This study is a 2-arm, phase III longitudinal randomized controlled efficacy trial to motivate utilization of evidenced based treatments (EBTs) for smoking cessation (e.g., state quitline, clinic-based counseling, the National Cancer Institute's text message program, and pharmacotherapy). Patients attending an urban dental clinic (n = 376) will be randomized to an intervention group (INT; smoking cessation induction video delivered via VR headset during their teeth cleaning, brochure about EBTs, and a 4-week text message program) or control group (CTRL; relaxation video delivered via VR headset during teeth cleaning, the same brochure as INT, and assessment-only text messages). Assessments will occur at baseline, immediately after the clinic appointment, one-month post-appointment and 3-and 6 months later. We hypothesize INT will be more likely to contact EBTs vs CTRL and have greater utilization rates of EBTs. Secondary objectives are to test the efficacy of INT on point-prevalence smoking abstinence, quit smoking attempts, and motivation to quit vs. CTRL. DISCUSSION: Incorporating smoking cessation into a dental clinic visit and targeting all smokers, regardless of motivation to quit, provides proactive reach to cigarette smokers who otherwise may not seek treatment for smoking. RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Negative content of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) is a strong predictor of distress and impairment. This paper quantifies emotional voice-content in order to explore both subjective (i.e. perceived) and objectively (i.e. linguistic sentiment) measured negativity and investigates associations with distress. METHODS: Clinical and non-clinical participants with frequent AVH (n = 40) repeated and recorded their AVH verbatim directly upon hearing. The AVH were analyzed for emotional valence using Pattern, a rule-based sentiment analyzer for Dutch. The AVH of the clinical individuals were compared to those of non-clinical voice-hearers on emotional valence and associated with experienced distress. RESULTS: The mean objective valence of AVH in patients was significantly more negative than those of non-clinical voice-hearers. In the clinical individuals a larger proportion of the voice-utterances was negative (34.7% versus 18.4%) in objective valence. The linguistic valence of the AVH showed a significant, strong association with the perceived negativity, amount of distress and disruption of life, but not with the intensity of distress. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that AVH of patients have a more negative linguistic content than those of non-clinical voice-hearers, which is associated with the experienced distress. Thus, patients not only perceive their voices as more negative, objective analyses confirm this.

RESUMEN

A polymer optical Sagnac interferometer is proposed as a compact and low-cost refractive index sensor for the first time to our best knowledge. The Sagnac interferometer is fabricated by only one piece of fiber to facilitate its fabrication and to avoid losses due to misalignment or fusion. The coupler was developed based on chemical and twisting techniques of ∼5cm of fiber. We modified the coupling ratio by varying the refractive index of media surrounding the coupler and consequently modified the transmission. For several values of mass percent concentration of sugar solutions surrounding the coupler, we found that transmittance decreases as the mass concentration increases. However, the decay is faster for the low concentration, while the decay is slower for higher concentrations. Two sets of experiments were carried out, at high (≥ 1 gm/100 ml) and low (<1gm/100ml) mass concentration of sugar solutions. The calibration of the sensor was done at 733 nm, where the response of the interferometer displays larger transmission variations for different solutions. The refractive index estimation was possible by correlation of the transmittance function (calculated by fitting the experimental data) with a linear refractive index model. The estimated resolution of the system is 0.057 weight percent of sugar solution, determined by the noise of the system.

RESUMEN

Benzo(b)fluoranthene (BbF) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) with five fused benzene rings; it is a highly recalcitrant compound and a priority environmental pollutant due to its detrimental effects on human health and the survival of wild animals. Biodegradation of BbF by microorganisms is an attractive alternative, and few studies have been focused on this issue. In this work, bacteria with the ability to degrade BbF were isolated and selected. The capability of the isolates to tolerate concentrations of 50 and 75 mg l-1 of BbF in liquid medium was evaluated. The selected isolates were identified by the 16S rRNA gene sequencing as belonging to Bacillus, Gordonia, Pseudomonas, Rhodococcus, Ochrobactrum, and Amycolatopsis. All isolates were tolerant and grew at the BbF concentrations tested, some isolates were more competitive than others, and the most prominent was Amycolatopsis sp. Ver12, which removed 47% of BbF, furthermore, with the addition of yeast extract, removed 59% of the compound. In summary, the report shows that Amycolatopsis sp. Ver12 can degrade BbF efficiently and could be considered for bioremediation of BbF-contaminated environments.

RESUMEN

We investigate a new configuration of a mode-locked fiber laser by using a nonlinear polarization rotation-based design to generate soliton pulses with low repetition rate. Unlike with previously reported configurations, we introduce a Faraday mirror after the first half of the cavity length to counteract the nonlinear polarization rotation effects. The total cavity length is 437 m including a 400-m long twisted SMF-28 fiber. The fiber was twisted to cancel the linear birefringence and to ensure that the polarization ellipticity is not altered as the pulse travels along the fiber. The strict control of polarization yields a stable relation between the polarization state of the pulses propagating in the cavity and the regimes of generation. Depending on the polarization state we observed three different emission regimes, the single soliton regime (SR), conventional noise-like pulses (NLP) and noise-like square-waveform pulse (NLSWP). In the SR, a 467.2 kHz train of solitons was obtained with pulse duration of 2.9 ps at 1558.7 nm.

RESUMEN

We report an experimental study of passive harmonic mode-locking in an all-fiber switchable dual-wavelength Er/Yb double-clad laser. The proposed scheme supports single- and dual-wavelength operation of mode-locked pulses with rectangular, h-like and trapezoidal shapes in a noise-like pulse regime. Single-wavelength emissions at λ1 = 1545.1 and λ2 = 1563.6 nm were obtained for pump power values of 9.42 and 6.31 W, achieving pulse durations of up to 18 and 11.8 ns, respectively. At an intermediary pump power of 7.5 W, dual-wavelength emission is obtained and pulses of around 3.59 ns are generated. Additionally, the transition dynamics until 4th-order harmonic mode-locking is also observed. Different laser operation regimes of fundamental and different orders of harmonic mode-locking, with rectangular, h-shaped or trapezoidal shaped pulses are obtained with the same laser configuration with simple and well-defined plates and pump power adjustments.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Infantile haemangiomas (IH) are soft swellings of the skin that occur in 3-10% of infants. When haemangiomas occur in high-risk areas or when complications develop, active intervention is necessary. OBJECTIVE: To update a Cochrane Review assessing the interventions for the management of IH in children. METHODS: We searched for randomized controlled trials in CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, LILACS, AMED, PsycINFO, CINAHL and six trials registers up to February 2017. We included 28 trials (1728 participants) assessing 12 interventions. RESULTS: We downgraded evidence from high to moderate/low for issues related to risk of bias and imprecision. Oral propranolol (3 mg kg-1 daily) probably improves clinician-assessed clearance vs placebo [risk ratio (RR) 16·61, 95% confidence interval (CI) 4·22-65·34; moderate quality of evidence (QoE)]; we found no evidence of a difference in terms of serious adverse events (RR 1·05, 95% CI 0·33-3·39; low QoE). We found the chance of reduction of redness may be improved with topical timolol maleate (0·5% gel applied twice daily) when compared with placebo (RR 8·11, 95% CI 1·09-60·09; low QoE). We found no instances of bradycardia or hypotension for this comparison. CONCLUSIONS: Our key results indicate that oral propranolol and topical timolol maleate are more beneficial than placebo in terms of clearance or other measures of resolution, or both, without an increase in harm.

RESUMEN

In the present experiment, we tested the hypothesis that in does kidding in summer, melatonin administration during dry period is galactopoietic for the subsequent lactation and results in improved growth of their suckling kids. Twenty-five multiparous pregnant creole does were enrolled into a randomized complete block design during their dry period in the 49 d prepartum, and under natural long photoperiods around the summer solstice, pregnant does either received 2 subcutaneous ear implants (18 mg) of melatonin (MEL, n = 10) or served as nonimplanted controls (CONT, n = 15). During the first 14 wk of subsequent lactation (suckling and milking periods), MEL does yielded more milk than CONT does. Throughout subsequent lactation, milk composition was not affected by treatment. In MEL does, peripheral triiodothyronine levels peaked at 2 wk of lactation, remaining higher than in CONT does. The mean daily weight gain was higher in MEL compared with CONT kids and was also higher in males than females, and for males, was positively correlated with milk yield. The current data support our hypothesis that melatonin during the prepartum period is galactopoietic in suckling does.

RESUMEN

A switchable and tunable multi-wavelength Tm-doped fiber laser is successfully demonstrated using a filter constructed with two tapered fiber elements in the cavity. The proposed system design uses a low-cost simple filter that allows stable dual, triple, quadruple, and quintuple-wavelength emission operation in the region around 1.9 µm. In the dual wavelength regime, the laser is capable of independently tuning each wavelength. For switching and tuning, a curvature is applied to the tapered fibers.

RESUMEN

The use of exergames may be one viable way to increase child physical activity, but investigation of its effects on motivation over time and prediction of adherence have seen little research attention. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of two cycling exergame interventions (single-player, multi-player) among children aged 9-12 years on motivational variables (theory of planned behavior) and to explore whether these variables could predict objective assessment of playtime across 6 weeks. Sixty-nine insufficiently active children were recruited through advertisements within the community/schools and randomized to either the single play condition (n = 30) or multi-player condition (n = 39). Exergaming use was recorded objectively via game logs and motivational variables were assessed after a familiarization session, at 2 weeks, and at 4 weeks. Participants played the exergames M = 133.45 (SD = 81.27) minutes in week 1 to M = 77.23 (SD = 84.09) minutes in week 6. The two exergame conditions did not result in differences among theory of planned behavior variables (P > .05). Mean levels of these constructs declined across the first 4 weeks (P < .05), with the exception of injunctive norm. Positive bivariate associations (P < .05) between game play and perceived control (0-6 weeks), and intention (weeks 3-4 and weeks 5-6) were identified, but only affective attitude (assessed at week 2) predicted (P < .05) game play (3-4 weeks) in a multivariate examination of the theory of planned behavior model. The results demonstrate that social cognitive motives wane across time when exposed to repeated exergame play.

RESUMEN

The red octopus Octopus maya Voss et Solís-Ramírez, 1966 is an endemic species and one of the most important fishery resources of the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. Due to its economic importance and the fact that in recent years interest in farming this species has increased, several initiatives have been implemented to study its biology and requirements for cultivation. Parasites represent an important component of the biology of the red octopus, as they can have an impact on both wild and cultivated populations. A total of 44 O. maya specimens were sampled from the fishing ports of Ría Lagartos and Dzilam de Bravo, Yucatán; specimens were measured and subsequently subjected to histological analysis of the buccal masses where cestode larvae (Prochristianella sp.) were found in the anterior salivary glands. Results of a chi-squared test showed that specimen size class and infestation levels (parasite abundance) were significantly correlated, with parasite damage levels more pronounced in larger animals. The damage caused to the anterior salivary glands by this parasite could have serious implications for feeding and reproductive success of O. maya.

RESUMEN

The objectives of this study were to determine (i) if in subtropical goats that gave birth during mid-December, the exposition to an artificial long-day photoperiod consisting in only 14 hr of light per day can increase the milk yield and (ii) to test whether these females can respond to the male effect at the end of the prolonged photoperiodic treatment. In experiment 1, 17 lactating goats were maintained under natural short days (control group), while another 22 goats were maintained under artificial long days (treated group) consisting in 14 hr light and 10 hr darkness starting at day 10 of lactation. The continuous exposition to an artificial long-day photoperiod produced an increase in the milk yield level during the first 110 days of lactation (time × treatment interaction; p = .01), while none of the milk components were modified due to the photoperiodic treatment (p > .05). In experiment 2, all control and treated anovulatory goats were submitted to the male effect using photostimulated males. All females showed oestrous behaviour within the first 10 days that were in contact with males (100% in both groups; p > .05). Thus, the latency to onset of oestrus did not differ between females from control (58.2 ± 3.0 hr) and treated (62 ± 4.6 hr) groups. Male exposition provoked ovulation independently if females were previously under long days or natural photoperiod (96 vs 100%, respectively; p = .79). It was concluded that exposure to 14 hr of light per day in subtropical goats that gave birth in late autumn stimulates milk yield without preventing the ovulation in response to the male effect at the end of the prolonged photoperiodic treatment.

RESUMEN

We report the dynamics of dissipative solitons in a ring cavity passively mode-locked fiber laser with a strict control of the polarization state. We study the relation between the polarization state of the pulses propagating in the cavity and the regimes of generation. We have found that at pulse ellipticities between 5° and 15°, the laser generates one bunch of pulses in the cavity, while at higher ellipticities the laser generates multiple bunches. At constant ellipticity we rotated the polarization azimuth and observed a regime transition from the generation of noise-like pulses (NLP) to that of soliton crystal. The NLP regime was found when the azimuth was rotated towards smaller low-power transmission through the polarizer. The number of solitons in the soliton crystal also depended on the azimuth in a straightforward way: the higher the initial transmission, the bigger the number of solitons.

RESUMEN

In this work, we study a 215-m-long figure-of-eight fiber laser including a double-clad erbium-ytterbium fiber and a nonlinear optical loop mirror based on nonlinear polarization evolution. For proper adjustments, self-starting passive mode-locking is obtained. Measurements show that the mode-locked pulses actually are noise-like pulses, by analyzing the autocorrelation, scope traces and the very broad and flat spectrum extending over a record bandwidth of more than 200 nm, beyond the 1750 nm upper wavelength limit of the optical spectrum analyzer. Noise-like pulsing was observed for moderate and high pump power preserving the same behavior, reaching pulse energies as high as 300 nJ, with pulse durations of a few tens of ns and a coherence length in the order of 1 ps. Stable fundamental mode locking as well as harmonic mode locking up to the 6th order were observed. The bandwidth was further extended to more than 450 nm when a 100-m piece of highly nonlinear fiber was inserted at the laser output. The enhanced performances obtained compared to other similar schemes could be related to the absence of a polarizer in the present setup, so that the state of polarization along the cavity is no longer restricted.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Meckel-Gruber syndrome is a ciliopathy, a lethal autosomal recessive disorder that occurs in all races and ethnicities; it is characterized by central nervous system abnormalities, resulting in mental retardation, bilateral renal cystic dysplasia and malformations of hands and feet. To date there have been only about 200 cases reported worldwide. It is a disease with a recurrence rate of 25% whose most reliable method for diagnosis is prenatal ultrasound. The mortality rate is 100% and in view of the high index of recurrence, subsequent pregnancies should be investigated appropriately with genetic counseling. CLINIC CASE: We present the case of a 15 years-old mother with 30.2 weeks pregnancy resulting from rape by consanguinity (grandfather), without prenatal care. On admission HD ultrasound study is performed finding fetus fetometria average 26.2 weeks (for discordant fetometria head circumference 187.5 mm to 21.0 weeks gestation -3DE-) lost in the skull shape of the shell line is observed winding mean; not cut down, cavum septum pellucidum or herniated sac cerebellum and occipital level (encephalocele) are evident. It starts cervical ripening with prostaglandins for 24 hours to conduct further labor with oxytocic and delivery care where a fetus death, female, 1516 g is obtained. Fetal autopsy family is authorized; however, it not has done because it is legal and only medical geneticist obtains medical case assessment. CONCLUSIONS: The Meckel-Gruber syndrome is a very rare condition that occurs in cases of consanguinity occasions. Mortality occurs in 100% of cases, so you should talk to parents and explain the best maternal prognosis, with abortion in the early stages and subsequent genetic counseling.
