RESUMEN

Circulating glucocorticoid levels oscillate with a robust circadian rhythm, yet the physiological relevance of this rhythmicity remains unclear. Here, we show that modulation of circadian glucocorticoid oscillation by enhancing its amplitude leads to anxiolytic-like behavior. We observed that mice with adrenal subcapsular cell hyperplasia (SCH), a common histological change in the adrenals, are less anxious than mice without SCH. This behavioral change was found to be dependent on the higher amplitude of glucocorticoid oscillation, although the total glucocorticoid secretion is not increased in these mice. Genetic and pharmacologic experiments demonstrated that intermediate opioid peptides secreted from SCH activate CXCR7, a ß-arrestin-biased G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), to augment circadian oscillation of glucocorticoid levels in a paracrine manner. Furthermore, recapitulating this paracrine axis by subcutaneous administration of a synthetic CXCR7 ligand is sufficient to induce anxiolytic-like behavior. Adrenocortical ß-arrestin-biased GPCR signaling is a potential target for modulating circadian glucocorticoid oscillation and emotional behavior.

BACKGROUND: Despite an increasing interest in vitamin D status, a reference range of the nutrient has not been fully established. This is partly due to a paucity of standardized measuring systems with high throughput. In addition, the range may vary by populations and may change with modernization of lifestyles. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to calculate the current reference concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) among healthy people living in an urban area in Japan. METHODS: A newly developed fully automated liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) system was used to measure serum 25(OH)D concentrations. Reproducibility was assessed by measuring standardized samples. Accuracy was validated by comparing with commercially available immunoassays. Then, mass screening was conducted targeting participants who received medical checkups in Tokyo from April 2019 to March 2020, and the reference ranges were calculated. RESULTS: The coefficients of variations of interoperator and interday reproducibility were 4.1%-8.5% and 3.7%-8.0% for 25-hydroxyvitamin D2 (25(OH)D2) and 4.7%-7.0% and 4.0%-6.9% for 25-hydroxyvitamine D3, respectively. The measured total 25(OH)D concentrations correlated well with those measured by immunoassays. In total, 5518 participants were measured for 25(OH)D concentrations, among whom 98% showed inadequate concentrations (<30 ng/mL). The reference ranges of total 25(OH)D for female, male, and total participants were 7-30 ng/mL, 5-27 ng/mL, and 6-29 ng/mL, respectively. After excluding those with abnormal renal and liver function, the range was 6-30 ng/mL. CONCLUSIONS: The high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency among seemingly healthy population may be attributed to lifestyle characteristics of people living in urban areas of Japan, including spending less time outdoors and lower intake of traditional foods. Longitudinal follow-up and mass screenings targeting different population will help elucidate reasons for discrepancies between official guidelines and the observed concentrations, to which the well-validated measurement system is essential.

OBJECTIVES: Current methods for periodontal regeneration do not promote collagen fiber insertions into new bone and cementum. We used a pig wound model to screen different functionalized collagen membranes in promoting periodontal reattachment to root surfaces. METHODS: Treatment groups included (1) control with no membranes, (2) collagen-coated membranes, (3) membranes with insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), (4) membranes with amelotin, or (5) membranes attached with calcium phosphate cement (CPC), or with CPC combined with IGF-1. Flap procedures were performed on mandibular and maxillary premolars of each pig. RESULTS: Histomorphometric, micro-CT, and clinical measurements obtained at 4 and 12 weeks after surgery showed cementum formation on denuded roots and reformation of alveolar bone, indicating that the pig model can model healing responses in periodontal regeneration. Calcium phosphate cement simplified procedures by eliminating the need for sutures and improved regeneration of alveolar bone (p < 0.05) compared with other treatments. There was a reduction (p < 0.05) of PD only for the IGF group. Large observed variances between treatment groups indicated that a priori power analyses should be conducted to optimize statistical analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Pigs can model discrete elements of periodontal healing using collagen-based, functionalized membranes. Screening indicates that membrane anchorage with calcium phosphate cements improve regeneration of alveolar bone.

We experienced a case of resection of a metastatic umbilical tumor(Sister Mary Joseph's nodule: SMJN)derived from a pancreatic tail carcinoma. The patient was a 70-year-old woman. She visited her previous doctor with a chief complaint of lower abdominal pain and came to our hospital due to suspicion of pancreatic tail cancer. She was found to have metastases to multiple organs which was unresectable by surgery. After chemotherapy up to the second-line of treatment, she was diagnosed to have progressive disease. The decision was made to provide the best supportive care for the patient. Thereafter, the patient developed SMJN. She had hemorrhage from the tumor accompanied by body movement, and her activity of daily living became impaired. She had difficulty controlling the bleeding despite repeated hemostatic treatment at the outpatient clinic and at her home. However, she required frequent blood transfusions for her severe anemia. Therefore, we performed a resection of the SMJN to control bleeding and to relieve her symptoms. She had a good postoperative course and was discharged on the fifth postoperative day. Due to deterioration of her general condition, she expired on the 59th day after surgery. However, the patient was able to live at home without bleeding or pain by the umbilical tumor. The local resection was considered to be useful as a palliative surgical treatment for SMJN.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), characterized by diastolic dysfunction and insufficient exercise capacity, is a growing health problem worldwide. One major difficulty with experimental research on HFpEF is the lack of methods to consistently detect diastolic dysfunction in mouse models. We developed a pacing-controlled pressure-volume (PV) loop protocol for the assessment of diastolic function at different heart rates in mice and tested if the protocol could detect diastolic dysfunction specific to a HFpEF model. A HFpEF model was generated by high-fat diet (HFD) feeding with concomitant NG-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester administration, and a pressure-overload hypertrophy (PO) model was produced by surgical constriction of the transverse aorta (TAC). Heart rate (HR) was slowed below 400 beats/min by intraperitoneal injection of ivabradine. PV loop data were acquired and analyzed at HR incrementing from 400 to 700 beats/min via atrial pacing using a miniature pacing catheter inserted into the esophagus, and comparisons were made among control, HFpEF, and PO mice. At baseline without pacing, no diastolic abnormalities were detected in either PO or HFpEF models. Frequency-diastolic relations, however, revealed the significant diastolic impairment specific to the HFpEF model; both relaxation time constant (Tau) and end-diastolic pressure-volume relationship (EDPVR) were worsened as heart rate increased. Peak positive first derivative of left ventricular pressure (dP/dtmax) was significantly lower in HFpEF versus controls only at a high HR of 700 beats/min. A pacing-controlled protocol would be a feasible and potent method to detect diastolic dysfunction specific to a mouse HFpEF model.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We developed a pacing-controlled PV loop protocol for the assessment of diastolic function at different heart rates in mice, which is a feasible and potent method for the characterization of diastolic dysfunction in a murine HFpEF model whose diastolic dysfunction might be difficult to be detected under resting conditions without pacing.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have reported on the impact of oxidative stress on the dental implant failure. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress on dental implant osseointegration in diabetes mellitus (DM). METHODS: Acid-treated titanium implants were bilaterally placed in the maxillary alveolar ridge of streptozotocin-induced diabetic (DM group) and control rats after extraction of first molars. Histological analysis and micro-push-out test were performed 4 weeks after surgery. Oxidative stress and osteogenic markers in the surrounding bone were quantified by real-time polymerase chain reaction. In the in vitro study, rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) were cultured on acid-treated titanium discs in a high-glucose (HG) or normal environment. Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and extracellular calcification were evaluated following antioxidant treatment with N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC). RESULTS: The implant survival rate was 92.9% and 75.0% in control and DM group, respectively. Bone-implant contact and push-out loads were significantly lower in the DM group. Expression of superoxide dismutase 1 at the mRNA level and on immunohistochemistry was significantly lower in the DM group. In vitro experiments revealed that the HG condition significantly increased ROS expression and suppressed the proliferation and extracellular calcification of BMMSCs, while NAC treatment significantly restored ROS expression, cell proliferation, and calcification. The ALP activity of both groups was not significantly different. CONCLUSION: In diabetes, high-glucose-induced oxidative stress downregulates proliferation and calcification of BMMSCs, impairing osseointegration and leading to implant failure.

BACKGROUND: The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of resveratrol have been reported previously. Particularly, monomeric trans-resveratrol has been demonstrated to produce positive effects in various pathological processes. We reported previously that resveratrol dimer-rich melinjo extract, among others, caused bone healing, decreased local oxidative damage, and activated antioxidants nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathways in a mouse model of experimentally induced periodontitis (EP). This study aimed to compare the bone-healing effects of the resveratrol monomer to the resveratrol dimer (gnetin C found in melinjo seed extract) in a model of EP and investigate the involvement of Nrf2 for effects of either form of resveratrol. METHODS: EP was induced experimentally in mice by placement of a 9 - 0 silk ligature around the left second molar. Mice received 10 mg/kg of either resveratrol monomer or dimer intraperitoneally on day 15 after induction of EP. The bone level around the ligated teeth was measured over time, and levels of proinflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress were measured in the periodontal tissues around the ligated teeth. RESULTS: Resveratrol dimer induced greater periodontal bone healing as compared to that related to use of the resveratrol monomer. It appears that healing of periodontal bone in either group was likely related to master regulation of antioxidant nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) significantly. Downregulation of IL-1ß, a proinflammatory cytokine was also demonstrated in the resveratrol dimer group. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that administration of resveratrol in either dimer form or the monomeric form reduced periodontal bone loss with greater inhibition of bone loss being demonstrated in the dimer group as compared to the monomer group and that these effects were related in all likelihood to decreased oxidative stress and hence reduction in local inflammation.

BACKGROUND: High levels of periodontopathic bacteria as well as Streptococcus anginosus were detected in cancer tissue from patients with esophageal cancer. An association between oral infectious bacteria and esophageal cancer has been reported. METHODS: Characteristics of the oral microbiota and periodontal conditions were studied as clinicopathologic factors in patients with esophageal cancer. The study included 61 patients with esophageal cancer and 62 matched individuals without any cancers. Samples of subgingival dental plaque and unstimulated saliva were collected to evaluate the prevalence and abundance of the following oral bacteria using a real-time polymerase chain reaction assay: Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Tannerella forsythia, Treponema denticola, and S. anginosus. RESULTS: In the cancer group, the prevalence of all bacteria, with the exception of F. nucleatum, in dental plaque; the prevalence of A. actinomycetemcomitans in saliva; the abundance of all bacteria, with the exception of F. nucleatum and P. intermedia, in dental plaque; and the abundance of A. actinomycetemcomitans and S. anginosus in saliva were significantly higher. Furthermore, a logistic regression analysis suggested that the prevalence of T. forsythia and S. anginosus in dental plaque and of A. actinomycetemcomitans in saliva, as well as a drinking habit, were associated with a high risk of esophageal cancer, with a high odds ratio. CONCLUSIONS: The current findings have potential implications for the early diagnosis of esophageal cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Ultrasonic scalers often cause an uncomfortable feeling to patients during the procedure. This study was conducted to compare patient complaint levels between magnetostrictive (M-USSC) and piezoelectric ultrasonic scalers (P-USSC) during supragingival scaling. METHODS: This study enrolled 82 subjects who received supportive periodontal therapy for at least 2 years. At each recall visit, probing pocket depth (PPD), bleeding on probing (BOP) and O'Leary plaque control record (O'PCR) were recorded. Then, supragingival scaling was performed using P-USSC (Varios or Petit Piezo) at the first visit and M-USSC (Cavitron) at the second visit. After each treatment, a questionnaire survey was performed using the Wong-Baker Faces Pain Scale for six items, which included the typical complaints occurring during ultrasonic scaling. RESULTS: The scores for all the six items related to patient complaints were greater for P-USSC than for M-USSC (p < 0.001). Patient complaints such as discomfort, pain, sound, vibration, hyperesthesia and length of treatment time were ameliorated in 74%, 65%, 80%, 67%, 57% and 53% of subjects using M-USSC, respectively. On the other hand, only <5% of subjects showed deterioration in terms of each complaint. CONCLUSION: This study suggested that M-USSC causes fewer patient complaints during supragingival scaling than P-USSC. M-USSC may improve patient motivation and compliance and may contribute towards achieving successful treatment outcomes. However, this result could differ depending on the shape of the tip and the insert and treatment site. Further research will be required under various conditions.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the plaque removal efficacy of a newly developed electric-powered ionic toothbrush vs. a manual toothbrush. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Manual or electric-powered ionic toothbrushes were randomly assigned to 30 healthy volunteers divided into two groups (Phase I). After 2 min of brushing, all tooth surfaces were stained with a plaque staining solution, and blinded examiners performed scoring using the Rustogi Modification of the Navy Plaque Index. Plaque removal rate was calculated at the central incisors, first premolar and first molar, as representative teeth, in the maxilla and mandibula. One week following Phase I, the same examinations were repeated in all subjects using another toothbrush (Phase II), as a crossover design. RESULTS: Electric ionic toothbrushes demonstrated a significantly higher plaque removal rate than manual toothbrushes in the premolar and molar areas (p < .05). However, in the central incisor area, no statistically significant difference was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with manual toothbrushes, electric-powered ionic ones were significantly efficient in removing plaque in the premolar and molar areas.

Objective- APOA5 variants are strongly associated with hypertriglyceridemia, as well as increased risks of cardiovascular disease and acute pancreatitis. Hypertriglyceridemia in apo AV dysfunction often aggravates by environmental factors such as high-carbohydrate diets or aging. To date, the molecular mechanisms by which these environmental factors induce hypertriglyceridemia are poorly defined, leaving the high-risk hypertriglyceridemia condition undertreated. Previously, we reported that LXR (liver X receptor)-SREBP (sterol regulatory element-binding protein)-1c pathway regulates large-VLDL (very low-density lipoprotein) production induced by LXR agonist. However, the pathophysiological relevance of the finding remains unknown. Approach and Results- Here, we reconstitute the environment-induced hypertriglyceridemia phenotype of human APOA5 deficiency in Apoa5-/- mice and delineate the role of SREBP-1c in vivo by generating Apoa5-/- ;Srebp-1c-/- mice. The Apoa5-/- mice, which showed moderate hypertriglyceridemia on a chow diet, developed severe hypertriglyceridemia on high-carbohydrate feeding or aging as seen in patients with human apo AV deficiency. These responses were nearly completely abolished in the Apoa5-/- ;Srebp-1c-/- mice. Further mechanistic studies revealed that in response to these environmental factors, SREBP-1c was activated to increase triglyceride synthesis and to permit the incorporation of triglyceride into abnormally large-VLDL particles, which require apo AV for efficient clearance. Conclusions- Severe hypertriglyceridemia develops only when genetic factors (apo AV deficiency) and environmental effects (SREBP-1c activation) coexist. We demonstrate that the regulated production of large-sized VLDL particles via SREBP-1c determines plasma triglyceride levels in apo AV deficiency. Our findings explain the long-standing enigma of the late-onset hypertriglyceridemia phenotype of apo AV deficiency and suggest a new approach to treat hypertriglyceridemia by targeting genes that mediate environmental effects.

The present study aimed to identify and compare the microbial signatures between periodontally healthy and periodontitis subjects using 454 sequences of 16S rRNA genes. Subgingival plaque samples were collected from ten periodontally healthy subjects and ten matched chronic periodontitis patients. Bacterial DNA was extracted and next-generation sequencing of 16S rRNA genes was performed. The microbial composition differed between healthy subjects and periodontitis patients at all phylogenetic levels. Particularly, 16 species, including Lautropia mirabilis and Neisseria subflava predominated in healthy subjects, whereas nine species, including Porphyromonas gingivalis and Filifactor alocis predominated in periodontitis. UniFrac, a principal coordinate and network analysis, confirmed distinct community profiles in healthy subjects and periodontitis patients. Using predicted function profiling, pathways involved in phenylpropanoid, GPI-anchor biosynthesis, and metabolism of alanine, arginine, aspartate, butanoate, cyanoamino acid, fatty acid, glutamate, methane, proline, and vitamin B6 were significantly over-represented in periodontitis patients. These results highlight the oral microbiota alterations in microbial composition in periodontitis and suggest the genes and metabolic pathways associated with health and periodontitis. Our findings help to further elucidate microbial composition and interactions in health and periodontitis.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to define the comprehensive bacterial flora of the healthy oral cavity by identifying and comparing bacterial species in different subgingival sites using 454 sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subgingival plaque samples were taken from six target teeth (central incisor, first premolar, and first molar in both the maxilla and mandible) of 10 periodontally healthy patients. Bacterial DNA was extracted and next-generation sequencing of 16S rRNA genes was performed. RESULTS: Bacterial composition in phylum level was similar for all sites within the same individual irrespective of tooth location. Unweighted UniFrac distance values of microbiome also showed that average distance was significantly larger between subjects than between tooth locations of the same subjects. CONCLUSIONS: The present results clarify the lack of effect of tooth location in the healthy subgingival microbiota. Results may suggest that any subgingival site can demonstrate similar subject-specific microbiota. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This investigation offers a better understanding of the uniqueness of the oral microbiome. The present study will facilitate sampling in future subgingival microbiological studies.

Purpose/aim of the study: Odontogenic ameloblast-associated protein (ODAM) is predominantly expressed during the maturation stage of enamel formation and interacts strongly with amelotin (AMTN). AMTN is involved in enamel mineralization, but the effect of ODAM on mineralization has not been investigated. This study determined whether ODAM was able to induce hydroxyapatite (HA) mineralization in modified simulated body fluid (SBF) and in a collagen matrix in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To monitor the kinetics of calcium phosphate mineralization, recombinant human (rh) ODAM protein in SBF buffer was incubated at 37°C and a light-scattering assay was conducted at intervals. To investigate the nucleation of ODAM in collagen matrix, the ODAM-impregnated collagen hydrogel was incubated in SBF buffer for 24 hours. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as negative control. Mineral deposits were visualized using electron microscopy. RESULTS: The presence of rh-ODAM protein in SBF resulted in higher light-scattering values after 18-24 hours. Calcium phosphate precipitates were observed on the surface of the ODAM-treated, but not BSA-treated collagen hydrogel after 24 hours in SBF. TEM and SAED analyses showed that these crystals consisted of needle-like HA. CONCLUSION: Similar to AMTN, ODAM is able to promote HA nucleation in a dose-dependent manner in SBF, and even outside of its biological context in vitro.

Hypertension (HT) is a systemic disorder that results in the decline of quality of life and death. While patients with periodontitis are at a high risk of HT, little causal information has been provided to date. To clarify the relationship, periodontopathic bacterial infection in cardiovascular patients with or without HT was evaluated. The subjects were patients with (n = 412) or without (n = 199) HT who attended Tokyo Medical and Dental University hospital. Blood examinations and periodontal measurements were performed. Three periodontopathic bacteria existence and antibody titers were evaluated. We found that specific periodontopathic bacteria, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Prevotella intermedia, were highly detected in male subjects with HT compared to non-HT subjects, while they were comparable in the female patients. Mean probing pocket depth of elderly male patients with HT was higher compared to non-HT patients. The rates of obesity, dyslipidemia, and diabetes showed partial statistical difference between the two groups. Specific periodontopathic bacterial infection may affect HT in male cardiovascular patients.

BACKGROUND: Renal function (RF) and activities of daily living (ADL) are risk factors for heart failure (HF) patients. AIMS: We evaluated differences in motor and cognitive ADL in relation to RF in elderly hospitalized HF patients. METHODS: Participants were selected from 414 consecutive hospitalized HF patients based on certain criteria. We investigated patient characteristics including Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Subjects were divided into three groups by RF level and analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Chi-square tests and two-way ANCOVA and multiple comparison tests. RESULTS: Of the 414 patients, 165 met the inclusion criteria (high RF: 41, moderate RF: 84, low RF: 40). There were significant differences between the three groups in age, eGFR, hemoglobin level, mobility, cognitive function, and length of hospital stay (p < 0.05). Motor FIM showed an interaction between term and group, and cognitive FIM showed a main effect on the group (p < 0.05). In the multiple comparisons, motor FIM of all groups indicated significant recovery, but it was significantly lower after 1 week in the low RF versus moderate/high RF groups (p < 0.05). Cognitive FIM showed no significant recovery in the low RF group; the FIM score after 2 weeks was significantly lower than that in the moderate/high RF groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In elderly hospitalized HF patients, the motor ADL recovery process in the low RF group was delayed compared to the high RF group. Cognitive ADL in hospitalized HF patients is difficult to recover, especially in those with low RF.

For the suppression of inflammation in the aneurysm development, we focused on inhibition of an important transcription factor, nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), using a decoy strategy. We newly developed a novel bioabsorbable sheet that delivers NF-κB decoy oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN).We treated 5-week-old SD rats that were induced with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) using 0.5 M CaCl2 with an NF-κB decoy sheet. Four weeks after AAA induction, aortic tissue was excised for further examinations. We showed that this bioabsorbable sheet could deliver the decoy ODN into the target tissues and dissolve within a week. Treatment with the NF-κB decoy sheet reduced the aneurysm size compared with the controls. It also suppressed inflammation due to the effect of NF-κB decoy ODN. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the expression of CD31, CD4, and CD11b in the NF-κB decoy sheet group was significantly lower than in the control sheet group. The NF-κB decoy sheet was absorbed on the target tissue.We have revealed that the bioabsorbable sheet mediated decoy ODN is effective for transfection into target organs. We have also indicated that NF-κB decoy ODN transfection using this sheet has the potential to suppress the dilatation of aneurysm. The bioabsorbable sheet mediated transfection of the decoy ODN can be beneficial for the clinical treatment of AAA and other NF-κB-related cardiovascular diseases.

BACKGROUND: Tachyarrhythmia (TA) and bradyarrhythmia (BA) are cardiac rhythm disorders that result in the decline of quality of life. While patients with periodontitis are at a high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), little causal information between TA and BA has been provided to date. To assess the relationship, periodontal bacterial infection in patients with TA or BA was evaluated. METHODS: The subjects were patients with TA (n = 98) or BA (n = 40) who attended Tokyo Medical and Dental University hospital. Periodontal and blood examinations were performed. Periodontopathic bacterial existence in saliva was evaluated. RESULTS: We found that specific periodontopathic bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia, were highly detected in saliva from TA patients compared to BA subjects. The rates of hypertension and dyslipidemia were comparable between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Specific periodontal bacterial infection might affect TA progression.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common manifestation of arterial stenosis of the extremity that reduces arterial flow. While patients with periodontitis are at a high risk of PAD, little causal information has been provided to date. To clarify the relationship, we conducted this cross-sectional study. The oral condition of patients with or without PAD, who attended Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital, was evaluated. Blood examinations and dental clinical measurements, including number of teeth, probing pocket depth (PPD), bleeding on probing (BOP) and clinical attachment level (CAL) were performed. Chi-square test was performed to compare gender, smoker rate, prevalence of DM, hypertension and dyslipidemia and edentulous rate. Wilcoxon test was used to compare bacterial counts and anti-bacterial antibodies and Student's t test was used to compare the other numerical values. The subjects were patients with (n = 34) or without (n = 956) PAD. We revealed that the PAD patients had more missing teeth (17.5 ± 11.0), a higher rate of edentulism (18%), and higher serum inflammatory factor levels than non-PAD patients (10.9 ± 8.7, 5%, respectively). On the other hand, there was no significant difference between hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking status, HbA1c, bacterial antibody titers, and bacterial counts between the groups. In conclusion, we clarified that PAD patients had decreased tooth number and worsened oral and periodontal condition with enhanced systemic inflammation.

Certain cell populations within periodontal tissues possess the ability to induce regeneration, provided they have the opportunity to populate the wound or defect. Guided regeneration techniques have been investigated for regenerating periodontal tissues and such therapies usually utilize barrier membranes. Various natural and synthetic barrier membranes have been fabricated and tested to prevent epithelial and connective tissue cells from invading while allowing periodontal cells to selectively migrate into the defect. This paper focuses on the literature relevant to the use and potential of resorbable collagen membranes in GBR procedures, sites of periodontal and intrabony defects, in cases of socket and alveolar ridge preservation and at implant sites. The results of their use in GBR procedures has shown them to be effective and comparable with non-resorbable membranes with regards to clinical attachment gain, probing depth reduction and defect bone filling. They have also shown to prevent epithelial ingrowth into the defect space during the initial wound healing phase postsurgically. Collagen membranes have also been used for root coverage and GBR procedures and have shown good success rates comparable to subepithelial connective tissue grafts and expanded-polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) membranes. The future for periodontal tissue engineering is very exciting with the use of barrier membranes expected to continue playing a critical role. However, long-term clinical trials are required to further evaluate and confirm the efficacy of the available collagen barrier membranes for periodontal and bone regeneration use.
