RESUMEN

Human and artificial features that coexist in certain types of human-like robots create a discrepancy in perceived humanness and evoke uncanny feelings in human observers. However, whether this perceptual mismatch in humanness occurs for all faces, and whether it is related to the uncanny feelings toward them, is unknown. We investigated this by examining perceived humanness for a variety of natural images of robot and human faces with different spatial frequency (SF) information: that is, faces with only low SF, middle SF, and high SF information, and intact (spatially unfiltered) faces. Uncanny feelings elicited by these faces were also measured. The results showed perceptual mismatches that LSF, MSF, and HSF faces were perceived as more human than intact faces. This was particularly true for intact robot faces that looked slightly human, which tended to evoke strong uncanny feelings. Importantly, the mismatch in perceived humanness between the intact and spatially filtered faces was positively correlated with uncanny feelings toward intact faces. Given that the human visual system performs SF analysis when processing faces, the perceptual mismatches observed in this study likely occur in real life for all faces, and as such might be a ubiquitous source of uncanny feelings in real-life situations.

In chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) homed to the Sanriku region, Japan, most of the fish are matured in bays and spawn near river mouths in coastal short rivers; therefore, their upriver migration is extremely short, but their behavioural characteristics have remained unknown. Upriver migration in the Otsuchi River, a typical coastal river, was evaluated from behavioural and physiological aspects. Homing salmon tracked in Otsuchi Bay held in the inner bay for less than 1 day to more than 10 days before river entry. The varied holding duration was negatively correlated with plasma 17α, 20ß-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) concentration, an indicator of maturation. After river entry, however, most fish were captured in weirs near the river mouths within 2 days regardless of the DHP concentration. Of the 34 fish released in the river, on the contrary, eighteen and five fish were seen next day in the main spawning sites located at c. 1.5 km upstream and in the branch creek, respectively, and 85% of the fish held position there until their death. The mean survival time of released fish was 5.8 days. Plasma DHP level suggested that preparations for spawning were already completed at the timing of the release. Taken together, homing salmon completed spawning preparation in the bay, and then they moved to their spawning sites immediately after river entry and spawned there during their short remaining life. This upriver migration contrasts with those of other populations, such as early migrants and long river migrants, whose maturation is completed during upriver migration.

The correlations among gonad maturity and various homing behaviors of chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta, were evaluated using acoustic tracking of tagged fish in Otsuchi Bay, Japan. There was a negative correlation between the time duration from release of tagged fish until river entry and the plasma 17α, 20ß-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) levels, an indicator of final maturation. Females with high DHP entered the rivers soon after the release, whereas females with low DHP (<10 ng/ml) took a few days to more than one week until river entry. Similar correlation was also found in males. A pattern of river entry correlated with maturational conditions was also observed in fish entering the rivers of neighboring bays. DHP concentrations of fish caught in the rivers were consistently higher. On the other hand, more than half of released salmon departed from the bay regardless of their plasma DHP level, suggesting that maturational status does not force homing adults to enter the most available nearest rivers. Fish entering the rivers experienced ambient temperatures less than 8 °C, which is approximately 5 °C lower than that of the bay. These results indicate that homing salmon hold their position in the bay until just before spawning, which may be attributable to low temperature avoidance. This characteristic type of river entry may be suitable to geographical features and thermal regimes of this region.

Parasites have profound fitness effects on their hosts, yet these are often sub-lethal, making them difficult to understand and quantify. A principal sub-lethal mechanism that reduces fitness is parasite-induced increase in energetic costs of specific behaviours, potentially resulting in changes to time and energy budgets. However, quantifying the influence of parasites on these costs has not been undertaken in free-living animals. We used accelerometers to estimate energy expenditure on flying, diving and resting, in relation to a natural gradient of endo-parasite loads in a wild population of European shags Phalacrocorax aristotelis We found that flight costs were 10% higher in adult females with higher parasite loads and these individuals spent 44% less time flying than females with lower parasite loads. There was no evidence for an effect of parasite load on daily energy expenditure, suggesting the existence of an energy ceiling, with the increase in cost of flight compensated for by a reduction in flight duration. These behaviour specific costs of parasitism will have knock-on effects on reproductive success, if constraints on foraging behaviour detrimentally affect provisioning of young. The findings emphasize the importance of natural parasite loads in shaping the ecology and life-history of their hosts, which can have significant population level consequences.

Situated at high positions on marine food webs, seabirds accumulate high concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its metabolites (DDTs), and hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs). Our previous studies proposed the usefulness of seabirds preen gland oil as a nondestructive biomonitoring tool. The present study applied this approach to 154 adult birds of 24 species collected from 11 locations during 2005-2016 to demonstrate the utility of preen gland oil as a tool for global monitoring POPs, i.e., PCBs, DDTs, and HCHs. Concentrations of the POPs were higher in the Northern Hemisphere than in the Southern Hemisphere. In particular, ∑20PCBs and∑DDTs were highly concentrated in European shags (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) and Japanese cormorants (Phalacrocorax capillatus), explainable by a diet of benthic fishes. Higher concentrations of γ-HCH were detected in species from the polar regions, possibly reflecting the recent exposure and global distillation of ∑HCHs. We examined the relationship between age and POP concentrations in preen gland oil from 20 male European shags, aged 3-16 years old. Concentrations and compositions of POPs were not related to age. We also examined sex differences in the POP concentrations from 24 streaked shearwaters (Calonectris leucomelas) and did not detect a sex bias. These results underline the importance of the geographic concentration patterns and the dietary behavior as determinants species-specific POPs concentrations in preen gland oil.

Food is heterogeneously distributed in nature, and understanding how animals search for and exploit food patches is a fundamental challenge in ecology. The classic marginal value theorem (MVT) formulates optimal patch residence time in response to patch quality. The MVT was generally proved in controlled animal experiments; however, owing to the technical difficulties in recording foraging behaviour in the wild, it has been inadequately examined in natural predator-prey systems, especially those in the three-dimensional marine environment. Using animal-borne accelerometers and video cameras, we collected a rare dataset in which the behaviour of a marine predator (penguin) was recorded simultaneously with the capture timings of mobile, patchily distributed prey (krill). We provide qualitative support for the MVT by showing that (i) krill capture rate diminished with time in each dive, as assumed in the MVT, and (ii) dive duration (or patch residence time, controlled for dive depth) increased with short-term, dive-scale krill capture rate, but decreased with long-term, bout-scale krill capture rate, as predicted from the MVT. Our results demonstrate that a single environmental factor (i.e. patch quality) can have opposite effects on animal behaviour depending on the time scale, emphasizing the importance of multi-scale approaches in understanding complex foraging strategies.

Animals are strongly connected to the environments they live in and may become adapted to local environments. Examining genetic-environment associations of key indicator species, like seabirds, provides greater insights into the forces that drive evolution in marine systems. Here we examined a RADseq dataset of 19,213 SNPs for 99 rhinoceros auklets (Cerorhinca monocerata) from five western Pacific and 10 eastern Pacific breeding colonies. We used partial redundancy analyses to identify candidate adaptive loci and to quantify the effects of environmental variation on population genetic structure. We identified 262 candidate adaptive loci, which accounted for 3.0% of the observed genetic variation among western Pacific and eastern Pacific breeding colonies. Genetic variation was more strongly associated with pH and maximum current velocity, than maximum sea surface temperature. Genetic-environment associations explain genetic differences between western and eastern Pacific populations; however, genetic variation within the western and eastern Pacific Ocean populations appears to follow a pattern of isolation-by-distance. This study represents a first to quantify the relationship between environmental and genetic variation for this widely distributed marine species and provides greater insights into the evolutionary forces that act on marine species.

Uterine natural killer (uNK) cells remarkably increase in number after implantation. NK cells or their precursors migrate from the blood stream and contribute to the increase. However, the contribution of uNK cells present in the virgin uterus has been unclear. To elucidate this issue, we examined uterine leukocyte subsets during pregnancy in BALB/c mice. The most dramatic change was the massive decrease in CD11b⁻ or Gr-1⁻ cells at gestation day (gd) 6. Uterine NK cells at gd 0 were CD11b⁻, and severely decreased at gd 6. The decrease was selective, and the proportion of other cells examined did not decrease. Uterine NK cells almost recovered at gd 12. These cells at gd 12 were more mature and/or activated in terms of expression of CD11b, CD27, CD127, or B220 than at gd 0. CXCL12 expression was observed on uterine cells at gd 0 or 6, but not at gd 12, whereas CXCR4 was detected on uNK cells at gds 0 and 12. A much higher expression of IL-15 in uterine cells or interferon-gamma expression in uNK cells was observed at gd 12 than at gd 0. IL-15 receptor alpha chain was detected on uNK cells at gd 12, but not at gd 0. Taken together, these findings were consistent with our interpretation that uNK cells present at gd 0 do not contribute to the increase of uNK cell number after implantation, and NK cells or their precursors migrate into the uterus, mature, and produce interferon-gamma to support pregnancy.

Wearing a sanitary mask tended, in the main, to reduce the wearer's sense of perceived facial attractiveness before the COVID-19 epidemic. This phenomenon, termed the sanitary-mask effect, was explained using a two-factor model involving the occlusion of cues used for the judgment of attractiveness and unhealthiness priming (e.g., presumed illness). However, these data were collected during the pre-COVID-19 period. Thus, in this study, we examined whether the COVID-19 epidemic changed the perceived attractiveness and healthiness when viewing faces with and without sanitary masks. We also used questionnaires to evaluate beliefs regarding mask wearers. We found that the perception of mask-worn faces differed before versus after the onset of the COVID-19 epidemic. Specifically, mask-wearing improved wearers' sense of the attractiveness of faces, which were rated as less attractive when a mask was not worn after the onset of the COVID-19 epidemic. Furthermore, mask-worn faces were rated as healthier after the onset of the COVID-19. The proportion of respondents with negative associations regarding mask-wearing (e.g., unhealthiness) decreased relative to before the epidemic. We suggest that the weakening of this association altered the sanitary-mask effect with a relative emphasis on the occlusion component, reflecting the temporal impact of a global social incident (the COVID-19 epidemic) on the perception of facial attractiveness.

Although visual search studies have primarily focused on search behavior, concealment behavior is also important in the real world. However, previous studies in this regard are limited in that their findings about search and concealment strategies are restricted to the spatial (two-dimensional) domain. Thus, this study evaluated strategies during three-dimensional and temporal (i.e., spatiotemporal) search and concealment to determine whether participants would indicate where they would hide or find a target in a temporal sequence of items. The items were stacked in an upward (Experiments 1-3) or downward (Experiment 4) direction and three factors were manipulated: scenario (hide vs. seek), partner type (friend vs. foe), and oddball (unique item in the sequence; present vs. absent). Participants in both the hide and seek scenarios frequently selected the oddball for friends but not foes, which suggests that they applied common strategies because the oddball automatically attracts attention and can be readily discovered by friends. Additionally, a principle unique to the spatiotemporal domain was revealed, i.e., when the oddball was absent, participants in both scenarios frequently selected the topmost item of the stacked layer for friends, regardless of temporal order, whereas they selected the first item in the sequence for foes, regardless of the stacked direction. These principles were not affected by visual masking or number of items in the sequence. Taken together, these results suggest that finding and hiding positions in the spatiotemporal domain rely on the presence of salient items and physical accessibility or temporal remoteness, according to partner type.

PURPOSE: The spatial resolution of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in small fields of view (FOVs) is important for clinical applications. However, it is difficult to measure spatial resolution reliably due to error factors such as noise. The aim of this study was to obtain a modulation transfer function (MTF) more accurately. METHODS: A CBCT apparatus was used with small FOV. An aluminum pipe slightly tilted at an inclination ratio of 77/3 (25.7) was used as the measurement phantom. The MTF was calculated from the edge image of the phantom. The actual oversampling ratio was determined by regression analysis. The experiment was repeated 16 times and the edge-spread function (ESF) was approximated by the least-square method. Furthermore, a low-pass filter (LPF) was applied to eliminate the component at frequencies above the Nyquist frequency. Finally, the MTF was calculated from the pre-processed ESF. RESULTS: Results showed that pre-processing reduced the noise of the ESF. The MTFs at frequencies of 1.0 and 2.0 LP/mm were 0.59 and 0.18, respectively, in air and 0.52 and 0.16, respectively, in water. CONCLUSION: The repeating-edge oversampling method combined with ESF pre-processing improved the accuracy of the MTF under clinically relevant conditions with a phantom.

The present study used an aluminum phantom to calculate accurate vertical magnification values around the mental foramen on panoramic radiography (PR) and compared corrected PR (Cor-PR) thickness measurements of the aluminum phantom and mandibular cortical width (MCW) of the human head with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) measurements at two fields of view (FOVs). The calculated vertical magnification value for PR around the mental foramen was 1.37. Measurements of the aluminum phantom significantly differed between Cor-PR and CBCT with an FOV of 100 mm and between CBCT with FOVs of 40 and 100 mm; however, MCW measurements did not significantly differ among the three methods. There was a very strong correlation between Cor-PR and CBCT with an FOV of 40 mm and between CBCT with FOVs of 40 mm and 100 mm, and intraobserver and interobserver agreement was good-to-excellent for all methods. These results suggest that Cor-PR and CBCT with small and large FOVs are acceptable for measuring MCW.

This study was performed to develop a new rat model of reduced masticatory activity in order to assess the effect of this reduction on the morphology of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) over time. Female rats were used, and ovariectomy was performed to simulate aged/postmenopausal status. Twenty-four SD rats aged 6 weeks were divided into four groups: ovariectomy/sham procedure (Ov/S); ovariectomy/reduced masticatory activity (Ov/RMA); non-Ov/S (NO/S); and non-Ov/RMA (NO/RMA). The RMA procedure involved grinding down the edges of the upper and mandibular incisors by about 3 mm and supplying the rats with a powdered diet. The bilateral TMJ was examined by micro-computed tomography at 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks after the start of RMA. Condylar width was greater in the NO/S group than in the Ov/S group after the 2nd week, showing that ovariectomy reduced the width of the condyle. After the 2nd week, significant differences in condylar width were apparent between the NO/S and NO/RMA groups, and between the Ov/S and Ov/RMA groups. This RMA procedure appeared to provide a good model of reduced masticatory activity. The present findings in female rats suggest that reduction of appropriate mastication activity in the growth period results in poor growth of the mandibular condyle and immediately induces atrophy of the mandibular condyle under conditions simulating aged/postmenopausal status.

We tested the hypothesis that segregation in wintering areas is associated with population differentiation in a sentinel North Pacific seabird, the rhinoceros auklet (Cerorhinca monocerata). We collected tissue samples for genetic analyses on five breeding colonies in the western Pacific Ocean (Japan) and on 13 colonies in the eastern Pacific Ocean (California to Alaska), and deployed light-level geolocator tags on 12 eastern Pacific colonies to delineate wintering areas. Geolocator tags were deployed previously on one colony in Japan. There was strong genetic differentiation between populations in the eastern vs. western Pacific Ocean, likely due to two factors. First, glaciation over the North Pacific in the late Pleistocene might have forced a southward range shift that historically isolated the eastern and western populations. And second, deep-ocean habitat along the northern continental shelf appears to act as a barrier to movement; abundant on both sides of the North Pacific, the rhinoceros auklet is virtually absent as a breeder in the Aleutian Islands and Bering Sea, and no tagged birds crossed the North Pacific in the non-breeding season. While genetic differentiation was strongest between the eastern vs. western Pacific, there was also extensive differentiation within both regional groups. In pairwise comparisons among the eastern Pacific colonies, the standardized measure of genetic differentiation (FꞌST) was negatively correlated with the extent of spatial overlap in wintering areas. That result supports the hypothesis that segregation in the non-breeding season is linked to genetic structure. Philopatry and a neritic foraging habit probably also contribute to the structuring. Widely distributed, vulnerable to anthropogenic stressors, and exhibiting extensive genetic structure, the rhinoceros auklet is fully indicative of the scope of the conservation challenges posed by seabirds.

Sensory rhodopsin II (SRII, also called pharaonis phoborhodopsin, ppR) is responsible for negative phototaxis in Natronomonas pharaonis. Photoisomerization of the retinal chromophore from all- trans to 13- cis initiates conformational changes in the protein, leading to activation of the cognate transducer protein (HtrII). We previously observed enhancement of the C 14-D stretching vibration of the retinal chromophore at 2244 cm (-1) upon formation of the K state and interpreted that a steric constraint occurs at the C 14D group in SRII K. Here, we identify the counterpart of the C 14D group as Thr204, because the C 14-D stretching signal disappeared in T204A, T204S, and T204C mutants as well as a C 14-HOOP (hydrogen out-of-plane) vibration at 864 cm (-1). Although the K state of the wild-type bacteriorhodopsin (BR), a light-driven proton pump, possesses neither 2244 nor 864 cm (-1) bands, both signals appeared for the K state of a triple mutant of BR that functions as a light sensor (P200T/V210Y/A215T). We found a positive correlation between these vibrational amplitudes of the C 14 atom at 77 K and the physiological phototaxis response. These observations strongly suggest that the steric constraint between the C 14 group of retinal and Thr204 of the protein is a prerequisite for light-signal transduction by SRII.

We report a patient with primary histiocytic sarcoma of the spleen associated with prominent hemophagocytosis. Although thrombocytopenia, probably due to hemophagocytosis, was refractory to corticosteroid therapy, the transfusion of platelets, and splenic irradiation, partial splenic embolization was effective and facilitated splenectomy for a diagnosis. The majority of the spleen showed necrosis, but viable neoplastic cells with pleomorphic nuclei and abundant cytoplasm, showing occasional erythrocytes or leukocytes, were still discernible. The neoplastic cells expressed CD68, lysozyme, and S-100 protein, and were negative for lymphoid, myeloid, and epithelial cell markers. CD163, a monocyte/macrophage-specific molecule, was positive in only some of them. Despite multiagent chemotherapy, the patient died of the disease, showing a rapidly progressive clinical course. Although the preoperative diagnosis of primary splenic histiocytic sarcoma is difficult, it has been confirmed in patients with splenomegaly of unknown etiology that clinicolaboratory features suggestive of hemophagocytosis may be important clues suggestive to the disease. CD163 expression by neoplastic cells could be confirmed only after careful observation, because the molecule may only be seen in some of the neoplastic cells.

Pharaonis halorhodopsin (pHR) functions as a light-driven inward chloride ion pump in Natoronomonas pharaonis, while pharaonis phoborhodopsin (ppR; also called pharaonis sensory rhodopsin II, pSRII), is a light sensor for negative phototaxis. ppR forms a 2:2 complex with its cognate transducer protein (pHtrII) through intramembranous hydrogen bonds: Tyr199(ppR)-Asn74(pHtrII) and Thr189(ppR)-Glu43 (pHtrII), Ser62(pHtrII). It was reported that a pHR mutant (P240T/F250Y), which possesses the hydrogen-bonding sites, impairs its pumping activity upon complexation with pHtrII. In this study, effect of the complexation with pHtrII on the structural changes upon formation of the K, L(1) and L(2) intermediates of pHR was investigated by use of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The vibrational changes of Tyr250(pHR) and Asn74(pHtrII) were detected for the L(1) and L(2) intermediates, supporting that Tyr250(pHR) forms a hydrogen bond with Asn74(pHtrII) as similarly to Tyr199(ppR). The conformational changes of the retinal chromophore were never affected by complexation with pHtrII, but amide-I vibrations were clearly different in the absence and presence of pHtrII. The molecular environment around Asp156(pHR) in helix D is also slightly affected. These additional structural changes are probably related to blocking of translocation of a chloride ion from the extracellular to the cytoplasmic side during the photocycle.

As the problems of mood measurements during alcohol consumption of alcoholic beverages do not necessarily evoke interpretable physiological responses, explicit reports may be contaminated by various cognitive biases or expectations. The present study examined whether emotional responses induced by the consumption of beverages containing low concentrations of alcohol can be measured using the Implicit Association Test (IAT). The IAT can detect the estimates of internal proximity between bipolar target concepts (e.g., cheerfulness and fatigue). Participants (N = 30) received three IAT sessions, followed by drinking a beverage containing 0% (control), 1%, or 3% alcohol by volume, and three IATs (at 0, 30, and 60 min after the time of consumption). We also recorded the explicit responses regarding the extent of drunkenness. The analyses of variance with alcohol concentration and time reveal dissociation between implicit and explicit measures. The IAT scores under the alcohol conditions reflect a more cheerful mood state relative to the baseline test. This effect of enhanced cheerfulness was not observed under the non-alcohol control condition. These results demonstrate that the impact of the consumption of low-alcohol beverages on mood can be measured using the IAT.

Brain and muscle Arnt-like protein-1 (BMAL1) knockout mice exhibit accelerated aging, abnormal glucose metabolism, and impaired adipocyte differentiation, among other phenotypes, which are effects associated with the BMAL1 gene. No study has investigated temporal changes in the deformation of the mandibular condyle and the presence of calcification in areas surrounding the mandibular condyle. In a study of 12 C57/BL strain mice under inhalation anesthesia, we collected images of the mandibular condyle at 6 weeks after birth and then every 5 weeks from 10 to 25 weeks after birth. At 25 weeks, deformation of the mandibular condyle was seen in 8 of 12 joints in BMAL1 knockout mice and in 2 of 12 joints in wild-type mice. At 20 and 25 weeks, deformation in areas surrounding the mandibular condyle, which are known to undergo calcification, was seen in 2 of 12 joints in BMAL1 knockout mice and in 0 of 12 joints in wild-type mice. BMAL1 knockout mice exhibited premature aging of the mandibular condyle, which suggests that circadian rhythms affect mandibular condyle morphology.

The present study examined whether attention can be flexibly controlled to monitor two different feature dimensions (shape and color) in a temporal search task. Specifically, we investigated the occurrence of contingent attentional capture (i.e., interference from task-relevant distractors) and resulting set reconfiguration (i.e., enhancement of single task-relevant set). If observers can restrict searches to a specific value for each relevant feature dimension independently, the capture and reconfiguration effect should only occur when the single relevant distractor in each dimension appears. Participants identified a target letter surrounded by a non-green square or a non-square green frame. The results revealed contingent attentional capture, as target identification accuracy was lower when the distractor contained a target-defining feature than when it contained a nontarget feature. Resulting set reconfiguration was also obtained in that accuracy was superior when the current target's feature (e.g., shape) corresponded to the defining feature of the present distractor (shape) than when the current target's feature did not match the distractor's feature (color). This enhancement was not due to perceptual priming. The present study demonstrated that the principles of contingent attentional capture and resulting set reconfiguration held even when multiple target feature dimensions were monitored.
