RESUMEN

A better understanding of the formation of femtosecond (fs) laser-induced surface structures is key to the control of their morphological profiles for desired surface functionalities on metals. In this work, with fs laser pulse irradiation, the two stages of formation mechanisms of the columnar structures (CSs) grown above the surface level are investigated on pure Al plates in ambient air. Here, we find that the redeposition of ablated microscale clusters following fs laser pulses of irradiation acts as the nucleation sites of CS formation, which strongly affects their location and density within the laser spot. Furthermore, we suggest their structural growths and morphological shape changes are directly associated with the competition among four laser-impact hydrodynamical phenomena: laser ablation, subsequent molten metal flow, particles' redeposition, and metal vapor condensation with continued pulse irradiation.

BACKGROUND: Considering the interactions between heavy metals, a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of exposure to various types of co-interacting heavy metals on health is required. This study assessed the association between dyslipidemia markers and blood mercury, lead, cadmium, iron, zinc, and nickel levels in residents of an abandoned refinery plant. METHODS: A total of 972 individuals (exposed group: 567, control group: 405) living near the Janghang refinery plant in the Republic of Korea were included. Blood mercury, lead, cadmium, iron, zinc, nickel, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels were measured. The combined effect of the six heavy metals on dyslipidemia markers was evaluated using a Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) model and compared with the results of a linear regression analysis. The BKMR model results were compared using a stratified analysis of the exposed and control groups. RESULTS: In the BKMR model, the combined effect of the six heavy metals was significantly associated with total cholesterol (TC) levels both below the 45th percentile and above the 55th percentile in the total population. The combined effect range between the 25th and 75th percentiles of the six metals on TC levels was larger in the exposed group than that in the total population. In the control group, the combined effects of the changes in concentration of the six heavy metals on the TC concentration were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the cholesterol levels of residents around the Janghang refinery plant may be elevated owing to exposure to multiple heavy metals.

Structurally colored materials present potential technological applications including anticounterfeiting tags for authentication due to the ability to controllably manipulate colors through nanostructuring. Yet, no applications of deep learning algorithms, known to discover meaningful structures in data with far-reaching optimization capabilities, to such optical authentication applications involving low-spatial-frequency laser-induced periodic surface structures (LSFLs) have been demonstrated to date. In this work, by fine-tuning one of the lightweight convolutional neural networks, MobileNetV1, we investigate the optical authentication capabilities of the structurally colorized images on metal surfaces fabricated by controlling the orientation of femtosecond LSFLs. We show that the structural color variations due to a broad range of the illumination incident angles combined with both the controlled orientations of LSFLs and differences in features captured in the image make this system suitable for deep learning-based optical authentication.

INTRODUCTION: Eotaxin-2 and -3 of the C-C chemokine subfamily function as potent chemoattractant factors for eosinophil recruitment and various immune responses in allergic and inflammatory airway diseases. Mucin 5AC (MUC5AC), a major gel-forming secretory mucin, is overexpressed in airway inflammation. However, the association between mucin secretion and eotaxin-2/3 expression in the upper and lower airway epithelial cells has not been fully elucidated. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effects of eotaxin-2/3 on MUC5AC expression and its potential signaling mediators. METHODS: We analyzed the effects of eotaxin-2 and -3 on NCI-H292 human airway epithelial cells and primary human nasal epithelial cells (HNEpCs) via reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and western blotting. Along with immunoblot analyses with specific inhibitors and small interfering RNA (siRNA), we explored the signaling pathway involved in MUC5AC expression following eotaxin-2/3 treatment. RESULTS: In HCI-H292 cells, eotaxin-2/3 activated the mRNA expression and protein production of MUC5AC. A specific inhibitor of C-C motif chemokine receptor 3 (CCR3), SB328437, suppressed eotaxin-2/3-induced MUC5AC expression at both the mRNA and protein levels. Eotaxin-2/3 induced the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)-1/2 and p38, whereas pretreatment with a CCR3 inhibitor significantly attenuated this effect. Induction of MUC5AC expression with eotaxin-2/3 was decreased by U0126 and SB203580, specific inhibitors of ERK1/2 and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), respectively. In addition, cell transfection with ERK1/2 and p38 siRNAs inhibited eotaxin-2/3-induced MUC5AC expression. Moreover, specific inhibitors (SB328437, U0126, and SB203580) attenuated eotaxin-2/3-induced MUC5AC expression in HNEpCs. CONCLUSION: Our results imply that CCR3-mediated ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK are involved in the signal transduction of eotaxin-2/3-induced MUC5AC overexpression.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate exposure to various hazardous substances emitted by incineration facilities and their likely effect on the health for residents of Bugi-myeon, Cheongju, Korea, which has three incineration facilities. METHODS: Heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and dioxin concentrations in the air and soil of exposed and control areas were measured. Moreover, the exposure levels to harmful substances and its effects on health were investigated in 1,124 exposed and 232 control adults. RESULTS: PAHs and dioxin concentrations in the air in the exposed area were significantly higher than in the control area. Urinary cadmium and PAHs metabolite concentrations were significantly higher in the exposed group than in the control group. The exposure group also had a higher prevalence of depression and self-reported allergic symptoms than the control group. CONCLUSION: The possibility of residents in Bugi-myeon being exposed to hazardous substances at incineration facilities cannot be ruled out. To prevent them from further exposure to hazardous substances, it is necessary to prohibit the expansion of additional incineration facilities in this area and to implement continuous monitoring projects for residents.

BACKGROUND: Three industrial waste incinerators (IWIs) were built in 1999, 2001, and 2010, within a 3 km radius of a town with a population of around 5000 in Korea. This study evaluated whether residents near these three IWIs had increased cancer incidence than those from other areas in Korea using regional health data. METHODS: Standardized incidence ratios (SIR) were calculated using the frequency of cancer cases in the National Cancer Registry of the exposed area (Buki-myeon), Chungcheongbuk-do (Chungbuk, state including Buki-myeon), and whole Korea from 1999 to 2017. A retrospective cohort was created using National Health Insurance System data from 2002 to 2018. The exposed group was defined as those having a residential history in the exposed area. The control group was defined as those having a residential history in nearby towns or counties in Chungbuk, excluding counties having living and cultural areas in other provinces and cities. Hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using the Cox proportional hazard model adjusted for age, level of health insurance fee, and smoking history. RESULTS: In the ecological study using National Cancer Registry data, the risk of all cancers, all cancers excluding thyroid, esophageal, stomach, and lung cancers in the exposed area were 1.13 (95% CI 1.03-1.24), 1.15 (95% CI 1.04-1.26), 1.91 (95% CI 1.13-2.89), 1.39 (95% CI 1.14-1.66), and 1.29 (95% CI 1.03-1.57) times higher than in whole Korea among exposed males, respectively. In the retrospective cohort, 4300 males (26,821 person-years) and 3796 females (24,746 person-years) in exposed group, 150,964 males (1,212,010 person-years) and 134,535 females (1,104,025 person-years) in control group were analyzed. After adjusting for several confounding factors, the risks for gallbladder cancer among males and kidney cancer among females were 2.65 (95% CI 1.38-5.06) and 2.82 (95% CI 1.13-7.03) times higher in the exposed group versus the control group, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Cancer risk was higher in Koreans having residential history living near IWIs compared to the other areas. Further study warrants nationwide effects and longer follow-up of WIs for cancers in Korea.

BACKGROUND: In some patients, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is accompanied by loss of smell and taste, and this has been reportedly associated with exposure to air pollutants. This study investigated the relationship between the occurrence of chemosensory dysfunction in COVID-19 patients and air pollutant concentrations in Korea. METHODS: Information on the clinical symptom of chemosensory dysfunction, the date of diagnosis, residential area, age, and sex of 60,194 confirmed COVID-19 cases reported to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency from January 20 to December 31, 2020 was collected. In addition, the daily average concentration of air pollutants for a week in the patients' residential area was collected from the Ministry of Environment based on the date of diagnosis of COVID-19. A binomial logistic regression model, using age and gender, standardized smoking rate, number of outpatient visits, 24-hour mean temperature and relative humidity at the regional level as covariates, was used to determine the effect of air pollution on chemosensory dysfunction. RESULTS: Symptoms of chemosensory dysfunction were most frequent among patients in their 20s and 30s, and occurred more frequently in large cities. The logistic analysis showed that the concentration of particulate matter 10 (PM10) and 2.5 (PM2.5) up to 2 days before the diagnosis of COVID-19 and the concentration of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O3) at least 7 days before the diagnosis of COVID-19 affected the development of chemosensory dysfunction. In the logistic regression model adjusted for age, sex, standardized smoking rate, number of outpatient visits, and daily average temperature and relative humidity, it was found that an increase in the interquartile range of PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO2, and CO on the day of diagnosis increased the incidence of chemosensory dysfunction 1.10, 1.10, 1.17, 1.31, and 1.19-fold, respectively. In contrast, the O3 concentration had a negative association with chemosensory dysfunction. CONCLUSION: High concentrations of air pollutants such as PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO2, and CO on the day of diagnosis increased the risk of developing chemosensory dysfunction from COVID-19 infection. This result underscores the need to actively prevent exposure to air pollution and prevent COVID-19 infection. In addition, policies that regulate activities and products that create high amounts of harmful environmental wastes may help in promoting better health for all during COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Diced cartilage glue (DG) grafts have been widely used in dorsal augmentation but can induce dorsal irregularities. The authors evaluated the postoperative feasibility of a crushed septal cartilage-covered diced cartilage glue (CCDG) graft. METHODS: The medical records of 38 patients who underwent dorsal augmentation rhinoplasty with an open approach were retrospectively reviewed. DG graft was used in 18 patients (47.4%), and CCDG graft was used in 20 patients (52.6%). Surgical outcomes were assessed by comparing anthropometric data on facial photographs and satisfaction questionnaires on aesthetic outcomes and palpable irregularities on nasal dorsum before and after surgery. RESULTS: Both groups showed successful aesthetic outcomes. Dorsal height, radix height, and tip projection were all increased postoperatively in both groups. Tip rotation did not significantly increase (p > 0.05). Both groups showed similar outcomes in terms of aesthetic satisfaction but a significant difference in palpable irregularity. CCDG graft group showed significantly better (p = 0.04) satisfaction with dorsal irregularities (4.15 ± 0.75) than the DG graft group (3.56 ± 0.92). CCDG graft group also showed significantly better mean values (p = 0.048) in the degree of irregularity by two surgeons (3.85 ± 0.65) than the DG graft group (3.25 ± 0.97). No patient had significant complaints about irregular dorsum, and none of them underwent a revision rhinoplasty. CONCLUSION: CCDG graft can be a complementary option for avoiding postoperative irregular dorsum complications. PURPOSE: This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the effect of environmental cadmium (Cd) exposure and essential metal imbalance on renal tubular damage and oxidative stress in 979 adults living in a Cd-polluted area near an abandoned copper (Cu) refinery. METHODS: We analyzed urinary Cd concentrations, renal tubular damage and oxidative stress markers, such as beta-2 microglobulin (ß2-MG) and N-acetyl-ß-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity and urine malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. The serum copper-to-zinc ratio (CZR) was used as an essential metal imbalance indicator. We divided the subjects into two Cd exposure groups based on the reference level of urinary Cd for renal dysfunction (2 µg/g creatinine). RESULTS: The geometric mean concentration of urinary Cd in all subjects was 2.25 µg/g creatinine. In both low and high Cd exposure groups, urinary Cd levels were positively correlated with urinary NAG activity, but not with serum CZR. After multivariate adjustment, serum CZR was strongly associated with urinary ß2-MG levels in the low Cd exposure group (ß = 1.360, P = 0.019) and was significantly associated with urinary MDA levels, regardless of Cd exposure level. In addition, the risk of renal tubular damage was significantly associated with urinary Cd level, particularly in the lowest or highest CZR tertile groups. CONCLUSIONS: Essential metal imbalance may be a determinant of oxidative stress and renal tubular damage in a chronically Cd-exposed population, and proper zinc supplementation will be effective in preventing adverse health effects due to Cd exposure.

Exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) is known to cause serious health problems, owing to a steady increase in the number of diesel vehicles worldwide. DEPs comprise approximately 90% particle mass existing in the fine size range (≤2.5 µm) and are mainly absorbed in the respiratory tract. However, limited information is available on the effects of DEP exposure on the respiratory tract in humans. Here, we investigated the effect and signaling pathways of DEPs on the expression of mucin, especially MUC5AC and MUC5B, in human airway epithelial cells by reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (PCR), real-time PCR, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, western blotting, and immunofluorescence staining. The signaling pathways activated following DEP-induced expression of MUC5AC and MUC5B in airway epithelial cells were analyzed by evaluating Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK; extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 [ERK1/2] and p38), and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) phosphorylation with western blot and small-interfering RNA (siRNA) analyses. DEPs significantly increased MUC5AC and MUC5B expression in human airway epithelial cells that was closely related to TLR4, MAPK (ERK 1/2 and p38), and NF-κB pathway activation. This is the first report to demonstrate the DEP-mediated increase in MUC5AC and MUC5B expression via the TLR4-mediated activation of ERK1/2, p38 MAPK, and NF-κB signaling pathways in human airway epithelial cells.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the association between retinal artery occlusion (RAO) and subclinical coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: We studied 41 patients with non-arteritic RAO without any history or symptoms of CAD, who had undergone coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) for systemic atherosclerotic evaluation between 2007 and 2012. The age- and gender-matched control group comprised 4-fold subjects who were randomly selected from asymptomatic subjects who underwent CCTA during general health evaluation. Medical records and CCTA findings were compared between RAO patients and control groups. Multiple logistic regression analysis was carried out to assess the risk factors associated with CAD. RESULTS: Cardiovascular risk factors were not significantly different between RAO patients and control groups. RAO patients showed higher coronary artery calcium score than did control subjects (267.9 ± 674.9 vs. 120.2 ± 289.5). On CCTA, the prevalence of obstructive CAD (diameter stenosis ≥ 50%) in RAO patients was significantly higher than that in controls (29% vs. 15%; odds ratio [OR], 3.0). RAO patients demonstrated a significantly higher segment-involvement score (SIS) (2.6 ± 3.0 vs. 1.6 ± 2.4) and segment-stenosis score (SSS) (3.6 ± 4.8 vs. 2.0 ± 3.3) than did controls. After adjustment of associated factors, RAO showed significant association (OR, 3.0) with obstructive CAD and extensive CAD (SIS > 4: OR, 2.8; SSS > 8: OR, 3.4). CONCLUSION: Patients with RAO had a higher prevalence of subclinical obstructive CAD with a more extensive and heavier burden of coronary artery plaques than did age- and gender-matched controls. Physicians should understand the potential risk of CAD in RAO patients.

Pyrethroids, including allethrin and prallethrin, have been widely used as major components of the common commercial insecticides. The toxicity of allethrin and prallethrin were well established that it interfered with the way that the nerves and brain function. However, limited information was available regarding respiratory effects in humans following inhalation exposure to allethrin and prallethrin. Therefore, we demonstrated effect of allethrin and prallethrin, and the mechanism involved, on the mucin expressions in human airway epithelial cells. In human airway NCI-H292 epithelial cells, the effects of allethrin and prallethrin and its signaling pathway for airway mucin, especially MUC5AC, were investigated by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), real-time PCR, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The mechanism of allethrin and prallethrin-induced MUC5AC expression in airway epithelial cells was studied in terms of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by flow cytometry analysis. Allethrin and prallethrin significant increased MUC5AC expression in human airway NCI-H292 epithelial cells. We also demonstrated allethrin and prallethrin induced a marked rise of ROS production. In addition, NAC (ROS scavenger) and DPI (NADPH oxidase inhibitor) inhibited allethrin and prallethrin-induced MUC5AC expression. These results are first to describe that allethrin and prallethrin-induced MUC5AC expression through ROS in human airway epithelial cells.

Adipokines, a group of proteins including leptin, visfatin, resistin, and adiponectin, are produced by adipocytes. Among adipokines, resistin is implicated in insulin resistance and inflammatory response modulation. Mucus hypersecretion has been greatly linked to airway diseases, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and rhinosinusitis. Increasing evidence has indicated that adipokines, such as leptin and visfatin, play important regulatory roles in various biological processes involved in mucus secretion. However, the effects of resistin on mucin expression in human airway epithelial cells, as well as the underlying mechanisms, have not been investigated yet. We showed that resistin affected mucin expression in human airway epithelial cells via the mitogen-activated protein kinase/nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) pathway. Resistin increased MUC5AC and MUC5B expression in NCI-H292 and primary human nasal epithelial cells. Additionally, it significantly increased the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), p38, and NF-κB. ERK1/2 and p38 specific inhibitors significantly attenuated resistin-induced MUC5AC/5B expression; however, NF-κB inhibitor reduced resistin-induced MUC5AC, but not MUC5B, expression. Knockdown of ERK1, ERK2, and p38 by ERK1, ERK2, and p38 small interfering RNA (siRNA), respectively, significantly blocked resistin-induced MUC5AC and MUC5B mRNA expression. In addition, NF-κB siRNA attenuated resistin-induced MUC5AC, but not MUC5B, expression. These results suggested that resistin induced MUC5AC and MUC5B expression via activation of different signaling pathways in human airway epithelial cells.

INTRODUCTION: The Myasthenia Gravis-Activities of Daily Living (MG-ADL) profile scale is a simple-to-use instrument. We aimed to validate this scale in the Korean language and compare physician- and self-assessed MG-ADL scores (pMG-ADL-K and sMG-ADL-K). METHODS: pMG-ADL-K and sMG-ADL-K and MG Composite (MGC) scores were obtained from patients. The correlation between pMG-ADL-K and MGC and the relationship between the pMG-ADL-K and sMG-ADL-K were assessed using the Cronbach α and the Spearman coefficient. By intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), the reliability of each sub-item of pMG-ADL-K and sMG-ADL-K was evaluated. RESULTS: We included data from 40 patients. The pMG-ADL-K score showed a strong correlation with the MGC score (rho = 0.80, P < 0.01). The Cronbach α was 0.98 between pMG-ADL-K and sMG-ADL-K, and sub-items showed good consistency (ICC 0.684-0.985, P < 0.001). DISCUSSION: The MG-ADL-K is a valid tool and the sMG-ADL-K shows excellent correlation with pMG-ADL-K. Both the pMG-ADL-K and sMG-ADL-K can be used to measure MG severity. BACKGROUND: Lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and cadmium (Cd) are well-known environmental pollutants. They are unnecessary in the biological processes of humans. This study was performed to estimate the representative background exposure levels to the metals by measuring concentrations in whole blood of the Korean general population. METHODS: This population-based cross-sectional study included 4,000 subjects (1,886 males and 2,114 females) 0-83 years of age in 2010 and 2011. Adult subjects (≥ 19 years of age) were collected by sex- and age-stratified probability method, and preschool- and school-aged subjects were recruited by a cluster sampling method. Written consent was provided prior to blood sampling. Pb and Cd blood concentrations were determined by a flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and blood Hg was analyzed by a direct Hg analyzer. RESULTS: The geometric mean, median and 95th percentile of blood Pb was 1.82 µg/dL, 1.83 µg/dL, and 3.78 µg/dL, respectively. The respective values were 2.92 µg/L, 2.87 µg/L, 9.12 µg/L for Hg, and 0.56 µg/L, 0.59 µg/L, 2.20 µg/L for Cd. Blood Pb and Hg were higher in males than in females, but no sex difference was observed, respectively, in subjects 0-4 years of age for Pb and in subjects less than 20 years for Hg. However, blood Cd was higher in females than in males and no sex difference was observed in subjects < 30 years of age. CONCLUSION: This study provides representative data of human exposure to Pb, Hg, and Cd covering whole age groups of the general population in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Lead (Pb) is a ubiquitous toxic metal present in the environment that poses adverse health effects to humans. Inter-individual variation in blood Pb levels is affected by various factors, including genetic makeup. However, limited data are available on the association between genetic variation and blood Pb levels. The purpose of this study was to identify the genetic markers associated with blood Pb levels in the Korean population. METHODS: The study subjects consisted of 1,483 healthy adults with no history of occupational exposure to Pb. We measured blood Pb levels and calculated probable daily intake of Pb according to dietary data collected using 24-hour recall. We conducted exome-wide association screening using Illumina Human Exome-12v1.2 platform (n = 500) and a replication analysis using VeraCode Goldengate assay (n = 1,483). RESULTS: Among the 244,770 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) tested, 12 SNPs associated with blood Pb level were identified, with suggestive significance level (P < 1 × 10-4). In the Goldengate assay for replication, three SNPs (C12orf51 rs11066280, MYL2 rs12229654, and ALDH2 rs671) were associated with statistically suggestively significant differences in blood Pb levels. When stratified by drinking status, a potential association of C12orf51 rs11066280, MYL2 rs12229654, and ALDH2 rs671 with blood Pb level was observed only in drinkers. A marginally significant gene-environment interaction between ALDH2 rs671 and alcohol consumption was observed in relation to blood Pb levels. The effects of the three suggestively significant SNPs on blood Pb levels was dependent on daily calcium intake amounts. CONCLUSIONS: This exome-wide association study indicated that C12orf51 rs11066280, MYL2 rs12229654, and ALDH2 rs671 polymorphisms are linked to blood Pb levels in the Korean population. Our results suggest that these three SNPs are involved in the determination of Pb levels in Koreans via the regulation of alcohol drinking behavior, and that their negative effects may be compensated by appropriate calcium intake.

OBJECTIVE: Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are utilized with growing frequency for a wide variety of industrial applications. Recently, acute and chronic exposures to TiO2 NPs have been found to induce inflammatory response in the human respiratory tract. However, the effect and mechanism underlying the induction of major airway mucins by TiO2 NPs have not been elucidated. This study was conducted to characterize the effect of TiO2 NPs, and the mechanism involved, on the expressions of airway mucins in human airway epithelial cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In NCI-H292 cells and primary cultures of normal nasal epithelial cells, the effects of TiO2 NPs and signaling pathway for airway mucin genes were investigated by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), real-time PCR, enzyme immunoassays and immunoblot analysis using several specific inhibitors and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). RESULTS: TiO2 NPs increased MUC5B expression and activated the phosphorylations of extracellular signal-related kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). U0126 (an ERK1/2 MAPK inhibitor) and SB203580 (a p38 MAPK inhibitor) inhibited TiO2 NPs-induced MUC5B expression. And knockdown of ERK1, ERK2 and p38 MAPK using siRNAs significantly blocked TiO2 NPs-induced MUC5B mRNA expression. Furthermore, Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) mRNA expression was increased by TiO2 NPs, and knockdown by TLR4 siRNA significantly attenuated TiO2 NPs-induced MUC5B mRNA expression and the TiO2 NPs-induced phosphorylations of ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate for the first time that TiO2 NPs induce MUC5B expression via TLR4-dependent ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK signaling pathways in respiratory epithelium.

PURPOSE: Portland cement contains carcinogens such as chromium and free silica, and hence, inhalation of cement dust can cause respiratory tract cancers. The purpose of this study was to determine whether living near a cement plant increases the risk of respiratory tract cancers. METHODS: The study population consisted of 341,793 people, all of whom lived in administrative districts within 3-km radius of ten cement plants in Korea. The respiratory tract cancer incidence data (International Classification of Diseases, ten revision code C00-C14 and C30-C34) for 2008-2012 were obtained from regional cancer registries. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) for each cancer site in the respiratory tract were calculated using an indirect standardization method. RESULTS: Compared with the general Korean population, the incidence of lung and bronchus cancer (C33-C34) was significantly higher in all subjects [SIR 1.15, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02-1.29] and especially in the men subjects (SIR 1.47, 95% CI 1.29-1.68) in our study population. In addition, the incidence of larynx cancer in men (SIR 1.64, 95% CI 0.97-2.59) and salivary gland cancer in women (SIR 3.03, 95% CI 0.98-7.07) living near cement plants was marginally increased. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that environmental exposure to Portland cement dust is a risk factor for respiratory tract cancers.

Cadmium (Cd) is the most potent nephrotoxic heavy metal and may affect bone; it also has a long biological half-life in the human body. This study was designed to assess the effect of environmental low-level Cd exposure on kidney function and bone in the general population. The subjects of this cross-sectional study were 1907 healthy Korean adults who had not been exposed to Cd occupationally. We analyzed the concentrations of Cd in the urine, markers of renal tubule damage, such as ß2-microglobulin (ß2-MG) and N-acetyl-ß-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity in the urine, calculated the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using serum creatinine, and measured bone mineral density (BMD). Also, we analyzed malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the urine. The geometric mean concentration of Cd in urine was higher in women (1.36 µg/g creatinine) than in men (0.82 µg/g creatinine). Urinary Cd was significantly positively correlated with urinary ß2-MG and NAG activity, whereas it was negatively correlated with eGFR and BMD. The risk of renal tubule damage was significantly associated with urine Cd level, and the association remained significant after controlling for various confounding variables. However, no association was observed between urinary Cd level and glomerular dysfunction or bone damage. The concentration of MDA was increased with urinary Cd level in a dose-dependent manner. These findings suggest that low-level environmental Cd exposure may cause microscopic damage to renal tubules through oxidative stress but might not impair kidney glomeruli or bones.

Concentrations of heavy metals exceed safety thresholds in the soil near Janghang Copper Refinery, a smelter in Korea that operated from 1936 to 1989. This study was conducted to evaluate the level of exposure to toxic metals and the potential effect on health in people living near the smelter. The study included 572 adults living within 4 km of the smelter and compared them with 413 controls group of people living similar lifestyles in a rural area approximately 15 km from the smelter. Urinary arsenic (As) level did not decrease according to the distance from the smelter, regardless of gender and working history in smelters and mines. However, in subjects who had no occupational exposure to toxic metals, blood lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) and urinary Cd decreased according to the distance from the smelter, both in men and women. Additionally, the distance from the smelter was a determinant factor for a decrease of As, Pb, and Cd in multiple regression models, respectively. On the other hands, urinary Cd was a risk factor for renal tubular dysfunction in populations living near the smelter. These results suggest that Janghang copper smelter was a main contamination source of As, Pb, and Cd, and populations living near the smelter suffered some adverse health effects as a consequence. The local population should be advised to make efforts to reduce exposure to environmental contaminants, in order to minimize potential health effects, and to pay close attention to any health problems possibly related to toxic metal exposure.
