BACKGROUND: The effects of hernia repair on testicular function remain uncertain, regardless of the technique used. Studies that analyze testicular volume and flow after hernia repair or hormonal measurements are scarce and show contradictory results. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of bilateral inguinal hernia repair on male fertility in surgical patients in whom the Lichtenstein and laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) techniques were used. METHODS: A randomized clinical trial comparing open (Lichtenstein) versus laparoscopic (TAPP) hernia repair using polypropylene mesh was performed in 48 adult patients (20 to 60 years old) with primary bilateral inguinal hernia. Patients were evaluated preoperatively and 90 and 180 postoperative (PO) days. Sex hormones (Testosterone, FSH, LH and SHGB) analysis, testicular ultrasonography, semen quality sexual activity changes and quality of life (QoL) were performed. Postoperative pain was evaluated using the visual analog scale (VAS). RESULTS: Thirty-seven patients with aged of 44 ± 11 years were included, 19 operated on Lichtenstein and 18 operated on TAPP. The surgical time was similar between techniques. The pain was greater in the Lichtenstein group on the 7th PO day. The biochemical and hormonal analyses, testicular ultrasonography (Doppler, testicular volume, and morphological findings) and sperm quality were similar between groups. However, the sperm morphology was better in the Lichtenstein group after 180 days (p < 0.05 vs. preoperative) and two patients who underwent Lichtenstein hernia repair had oligospermia after 180 days. The QoL evaluation showed a significant improvement after surgery in the following domains: physical function, role emotional, bodily pain and general health (p < 0.05). On comparison of Lichtenstein vs. TAPP none of the domains showed statistically significant differences. No patient reported sexual changes. CONCLUSION: Bilateral inguinal hernia repair with polypropylene mesh, whether using Lichtenstein or TAPP, does not impair male fertility in terms of long-term outcomes. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a pharmacological alternative with great potential for reducing the deleterious effects of surgical procedures on patients with steatohepatitis. We evaluated the effect of NAC on hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in C57BL/6J mice, 8 weeks-old, weighing 25-30 g, with steatohepatitis induced by a methionine- and choline-deficient (MCD) diet. Groups: MCD group (steatohepatitis), MCD-I/R group (steatohepatitis plus 30 min of 70% liver ischemia and 24 h of reperfusion), MCD-I/R+NAC group (same as MCD-I/R group plus 150 mg/kg NAC 15 min before ischemia), and control group (normal AIN-93M diet). Liver enzymes and histopathology; nitrite and TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) levels; pro-inflammatory cytokines; antioxidants enzymes; Nrf2 (nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2) expression; and apoptosis were evaluated. In the group treated with NAC, reductions in inflammatory infiltration; AST (aspartate aminotransferase), nitrite, and TBARS levels; GPx (gutathione peroxidase) activity; cytokines synthesis; and number of apoptotic cells were observed while the GR (glutathione reductase) activity was increased. No differences were observed in Nfr2 expression or in SOD (superoxide dismutase), CAT (catalase), and GST (glutathione S-transferase) activities. Thus, it may be concluded that NAC exerts beneficial effects on mice livers with steatohepatitis submitted to I/R by reducing oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and cell death.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal ischemia reperfusion is a common clinical condition that causes functional impairment. Once tight junctions are damaged, barrier function is compromised, and the intestines become a source for entry of bacterial and inflammatory mediators into the circulation, leading to systemic inflammatory response syndrome, multiple organ failure, and death. It is possible that diazoxide could protect the intestines against ischemia reperfusion. The aim of this study is to determine whether diazoxide can provide protection in a rat model of intestinal ischemia reperfusion. METHODS: A total of 32 adult male specific pathogen-free Wistar rats were randomized into three groups: a control group, n = 6; a saline group, n = 13; and a diazoxide group, n = 13. The saline and diazoxide groups underwent clamping of the superior mesenteric artery for 1 h, with samples in all the groups being collected 12 h later. RESULTS: Intestinal histology showed greater damage in the intestinal ischemia reperfusion groups. mRNA expression of zonula occludens-1 and occludin (tight junction proteins) and interleukin-6 and cyclooxygenase-2 was the highest in the Saline group. The Diazoxide group showed a reduction in aspartate aminotransferase serum levels compared with the other groups. CONCLUSIONS: Increased expression of zonula occludens-1, occludin, and cyclooxygenase-2 suggested a greater regenerative effort because of more severe lesions in the saline group. In addition, increased expression of interleukin-6 in the saline group was suggestive of inflammation, indicating that diazoxide had protective effects in the diazoxide group. Reduced aspartate aminotransferase in the diazoxide group suggested liver protection. Diazoxide protects the intestines and liver from intestinal ischemia reperfusion lesions in rats.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The clinical course of acute pancreatitis can vary from mild to severe. In its most severe manifestation, acute pancreatitis is associated with an exacerbated systemic inflammatory response and high mortality rates. The severe form of acute pancreatitis is more frequent in elderly patients than in young patients, but the mechanisms underlying this difference are still under investigation. METHODS: Rats were divided into two groups as follows: Group 1, young rats; and Group 2, old rats. Acute pancreatitis group was induced by a retrograde injection of a sodium taurocholate solution into the biliopancreatic duct. Using this model of acute pancreatic injury, we designed a study to investigate possible differences in microbial translocation and characteristics of the intestinal barrier between elderly and young rats. RESULTS: There was a significantly higher number of bacterial colonies in the pancreas of elderly rats compared with young rats following pancreas injury, which was associated with a more severe local intestinal inflammatory response that included elevated gene expression of COX-2 and a decreased gene expression of tight junction proteins. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that intestinal damage during acute pancreatitis is exacerbated in elderly rats compared with young rats and that COX-2 inhibition could be a potential therapeutic target to offer tailored treatment for acute pancreatitis in the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Renal ischemia/reperfusion injury induced by hemorrhagic shock (HS) and subsequent fluid resuscitation is a common cause of acute renal failure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of combining N-acetylcysteine (NAC) with fluid resuscitation on renal injury in rats that underwent HS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two groups of male Wistar rats were induced to controlled HS at 35 mm Hg mean arterial pressure for 60 min. After this period, the HS and fluid resuscitation (HS/R) group was resuscitated with lactate containing 50% of the blood that was withdrawn. The HS/R + NAC group was resuscitated with Ringer's lactate combined with 150 mg/kg of NAC and blood. The sham group animals were catheterized but were not subjected to shock. All animals were kept under anesthesia and euthanized after 120 min of fluid resuscitation or observation. RESULTS: Animals treated with NAC presented attenuation of histologic lesions, reduced oxidative stress, and apoptosis markers when compared with animals from the HS/R group. The serum creatinine was similar in all the groups. CONCLUSIONS: NAC is a promising drug for combining with fluid resuscitation to attenuate the kidney injury associated with HS.

OBJECTIVES: to describe the profile of older adults who access the internet to search for health information and identify the factors that can influence older adults' decisions about their health based on information collected online. METHODS: 391 older adults answered an online questionnaire regarding habits and satisfaction with information about health collected on the internet. Data processing involved Logistic Regression. RESULTS: higher education reduces by 44% the likelihood of an older adult following the health recommendations on internet sites. However, social activities and self-perceived health increase the possibility of following the recommendations by 83% and 71%, respectively. The belief that the internet promotes healthy habits increases by 29.2 times the probability of an older adult following the advice. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: knowing the profile of older adults who use the Internet can help professionals formulate public policies and build good information platforms on health and well-being.

The experimental model of aortocaval fistula is a useful model of cardiac hypertrophy in response to volume overload. In the present study it has been used to investigate the pathologic subendocardial remodeling associated with the development of heart failure during the early phases (day 1, 3, and 7) following volume overload. Compared with sham treated rats, aortocaval fistula rats showed lower systemic blood pressure and higher left ventricular end-diastolic pressure This resulted in lower coronary driving pressure and left ventricular systolic and diastolic dysfunction. Signs of myocyte necrosis, leukocyte cell infiltration, fibroplasia and collagen deposition appeared sequentially in the subendocardium where remodeling was more prominent than in the non-subendocardium. Accordingly, increased levels of TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, and IL-6, and enhanced MMP-2 activity were all found in the subendocardium of rats with coronary driving pressure ≤ 60 mmHg. The coronary driving pressure was inversely correlated with MMP-2 activity in subendocardium in all time-points studied, and blood flow in this region showed positive correlation with systolic and diastolic function at day 7. Thus the predominant subendocardial remodeling that occurs in response to low myocardial perfusion pressure during the acute phases of aortocaval fistula contributes to early left ventricular dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Experimental hemorrhagic shock (HS) is based on controlling bleeding and the treatment of fluid resuscitation to restore tissue oxygenation and perfusion. The HS could promote ischemia/reperfusion injury, which induces a general exacerbation of the inflammatory process, initially compromising the lungs. N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an antioxidant, may attenuate ischemia/reperfusion injury. This study evaluated the effect of NAC in association with fluid resuscitation on pulmonary injury in a controlled HS model in rats. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were submitted to controlled HS (mean arterial pressure of 35 mm Hg for 60 min). Two groups were constituted according to resuscitation solution administered: RLG (Ringer's lactate solution) and RLG+NAC (Ringer's lactate in association with 150 mg/kg NAC. A control group was submitted to catheterization only. After 120 min of resuscitation, bronchoalveolar lavage was performed to assess intra-alveolar cell infiltration and pulmonary tissue was collected for assessment of malondialdehyde, interleukin 6, and interleukin 10 and histopathology. RESULTS: Compared with the RLG group, the RLG+NAC group showed lower bronchoalveolar lavage inflammatory cell numbers, lower interstitial inflammatory infiltration in pulmonary parenchyma, and lower malondialdehyde concentration. However, tissue cytokine (interleukin 6 and interleukin 10) expression levels were similar. CONCLUSION: N-acetylcysteine was associated with fluid resuscitation-attenuated oxidative stress and inflammatory cell infiltration in pulmonary parenchyma. N-acetylcysteine did not modify cytokine expression.

PURPOSE: To evaluate local and systemic effects of 24-hour fasting in liver ischemia and reperfusion injury. METHODS: Twenty-one adult male Wistar rats (330-390 g) were submitted to 60 minutes of hepatic ischemia followed by 24 hours of reperfusion. Before the day of the experiment, the animals fasted, but free access to water was allowed. Two groups were constituted: Control: non-fasted, that is, feeding ad libitum before surgical procedure; Fasting: rats underwent previous fasting of 24 hours. Hepatic ischemia was performed using vascular clamp in hepatic pedicle. At 24 hours after liver reperfusion, blood and tissue samples were collected. To analysis, liver lobes submitted to ischemia was identified as ischemic liver and paracaval non-ischemic lobes as non-ischemic liver. We evaluated: malondialdehyde levels, hepatocellular function (alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase activities, and both ratio), cytokines (interleukins-6, -10, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha), hepatic ischemia and reperfusion injury (histology). RESULTS: Malondialdehyde measured in non-ischemic and ischemic liver samples, hepatocellular function and cytokines were comparable between groups. Histological findings were distinct in three regions evaluated. Microvesicular steatosis was comparable between 24-hour fasting and non-fasted control groups in periportal region of hepatic lobe. In contrast, steatosis was more pronounced in zones 2 and 3 of ischemic liver samples of fasting compared to control groups. CONCLUSIONS: These data indicates that fasting does not protect, but it can be also detrimental to liver submitted to ischemia/reperfusion damage. At that time, using long fasting before liver surgery in the real world may be contraindicated.

PURPOSE: To evaluate effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) associated with Ringer lactate or hypertonic saline in inflammation and bacterial translocation on experimental intestinal obstruction (IO). METHODS: Wistar rats was subjected to IO. Six or 24 hours after, rats were subjected to enterectomy and fluid resuscitation: IO, RL (subjected to the same procedures but with fluid resuscitation using Ringer's lactate solution); RLNAC (added NAC to Ringer's solution); and HSNAC (surgical procedure + fluid reposition with 7.5% hypertonic saline and NAC). After 24 h, tissues were collected to cytokines, bacterial translocation, and histological assessments. RESULTS: In kidney, interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) was lower in the groups with fluid resuscitation compared to IO group. The RLNAC showed lower levels compared to the RL. Interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-10 (IL-10), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and (IFN-gamma) were lower in the treatment groups than in IO. In lung, IL-1beta and IL-6 were lower in RLNAC compared to IO. IL-10 was lower in RL, RLNAC and HSNAC compared to IO. TNF-alpha was higher in HSNAC compared to both RL and RLNAC. Bacterial translocation was observed in all animals of IO group. In kidneys, inflammation and congestion degrees were lower in HSNAC compared to RL. In lungs, inflammation levels were higher in RLNAC compared with the sham group. CONCLUSIONS: The data indicates that NAC associated with RL can promote a decrease in the inflammatory process in the kidneys and lungs in rats, following intestinal obstruction and ischemia in rats.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac remodeling in uremia is characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy, interstitial fibrosis and microvascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in uremic patients, but coronary events alone are not the prevalent cause, sudden death and heart failure are. We studied the cardiac remodeling in experimental uremia, evaluating the isolated effect of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and phosphorus. METHODS: Wistar rats were submitted to parathyroidectomy (PTx) and 5/6 nephrectomy (Nx); they also received vehicle (V) and PTH at normal (nPTH) or high (hPTH) doses. They were fed with a poor-phosphorus (pP) or rich-phosphorus (rP) diet and were divided into the following groups: 'Sham': G1 (V+normal-phosphorus diet (np)) and 'Nx+PTx': G2 (nPTH+pP), G3 (nPTH+rP), G4 (hPTH+pP) and G5 (hPTH+rP). After 8 weeks, biochemical analysis, myocardium morphometry and arteriolar morphological analysis were performed. In addition, using immunohistochemical analysis, we evaluated angiotensin II, α-actin, transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-ß) and nitrotyrosine, as well as fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23), fibroblast growth factor receptor-1 (FGFR-1) and runt-related transcription factor-2 (Runx-2) expression. RESULTS: Nx animals presented higher serum creatinine levels as well as arterial hypertension. Higher PTH levels were associated with myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis as well as a higher coronary lesion score. High PTH animals also presented a higher myocardial expression of TGF-ß, angiotensin II, FGF-23 and nitrotyrosine and a lower expression of α-actin. Phosphorus overload was associated with higher serum FGF-23 levels and Runx-2, as well as myocardial hypertrophy. FGFR-1 was positive in the cardiomyocytes of all groups as well as in calcified coronaries of G4 and G5 whereas Runx-2 was positive in G3, G4 and G5. CONCLUSION: In uremia, PTH and phosphorus overload are both independently associated with major changes related to the cardiac remodeling process, emphasizing the need for a better control of these factors in chronic kidney disease.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) are widely used for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (cCSCR), but their effectiveness remains unclear. This research was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of this drugs for cCSCR. METHODS: This is a review of randomized clinical trials (RCT) comparing MRAs to placebo in adults with cCSCR, using the effects of MRAs on best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and adverse events as primary outcomes and the effects of MRAs on anatomical parameters as secondary outcomes: central subfield thickness (CST), subretinal fluid height (SFH) and central choroidal thickness (CCT). Our all-language online search included Medline (via PubMed), Central, Embase, Lilacs, Ibecs, and RCT registers platforms, as late as May 2021. We used the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool (version 2) to assess the methodological quality of each study and synthesized the results in meta-analyses using a random-effects model. RESULTS: The search identified 302 records, five of which were eligible, totaling 225 cCSCR patients (aged 45-62 years; M/F ratio 3.1:1) treated for 1 to 12 months with spironolactone (50 mg/day) or eplerenone (50 mg/day) vs. placebo. Moderate-certainty evidence suggests MRAs result in little to no improvement in BCVA compared to placebo (SMD 0.22; 95% CI - 0.04 to 0.48; studies = 5; comparisons = 6; participants = 218; I2 = 0%). Very low-certainty evidence suggests that, when compared to placebo, MRAs have a very uncertain impact on adverse effects (no meta-analysis was performed), and CST (MD 18.1; 95% CI - 113.04 to 76.84; participants = 145; studies = 2; I2 = 68%). MRAs also result in little to no difference in SFH (SMD - 0.35; 95% CI - 0.95 to 0.26; studies = 5; comparisons = 6; participants = 221; I2 = 76%; moderate certainty) and CCT (MD - 21.23; 95% CI - 64.69 to 22.24; participants = 206; studies = 4; comparisons = 5; I2 = 85%; low certainty). CONCLUSION: MRAs have little to no effect on BCVA. Evidence for adverse events and CST is very uncertain. MRAs also have little to no effect on SFH and CCT. These findings should be considered when prescribing MRAs for cCSCR. This research was previous registration in the PROSPERO platform (CRD42020182601).

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether the pigeon (Columba livia) is a good model for evaluating the vestibular system involved with postural maintenance during movement. METHODS: This study maps the brainstem targets of the horizontal ampullary inputs from the vestibular periphery of the pigeon. We used biotin dextran amine (BDA) injection in horizontal semicircular canal (HSCC), immunohistochemistry for GluR2/3 and GluR4 AMPA and computerized histomorphology reconstruction. RESULTS: Our results show the same distribution pattern with ipsilateral projections to vestibular nuclear complex (VNC) from the HSCC, with the majority of labeled fibers being, long, thin, with few varicosities and many ramifications. Horizontal semicircular canal projections achieve neurons belonging to all nuclei of the VNC with exception of dorsal portion of lateral vestibular nucleus and this area express GluR2/3 and GluR4 AMPA receptors reinforcing the idea of glutamate participation in these connections. CONCLUSIONS: Pigeon is an appropriated experimental model to study of projections of HSCC and reinforcing the information that the vestibular system has strong relation with the fast responses necessary for postural control. Moreover, its phylogenetic organization apparently conservation, also seems to be a fundamental characteristic for vertebrates.

BACKGROUND: Trauma-induced secondary cardiac injury has been associated with significant adverse cardiovascular events. Speckle tracking echocardiography is a novel technology that allows an accurate and reproducible cardiac structure and function assessment. We evaluated the left ventricle (LV) myocardial deformation by speckle tracking echocardiography in a hemorrhagic shock (HS) swine model. METHODS: Seven healthy male Landrace pigs were included in this study. Severe HS was reached through three sequentially blood withdraws of 20% of estimated blood volume, and it was maintained for 60 minutes. Volume resuscitation was performed using all precollected blood volume. A 1.8- to 4.2-MHz phased-array transducer was used to acquire the two-dimensional echocardiography images. Strain measurements were obtained semiautomatically by wall motion tracking software. Results are presented as medians and interquartile ranges and compared using Wilcoxon rank-sum test. A p value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The median weight was 32 (26.1-33) kg, and the median total blood volume withdrawn was 1,100 (1,080-1,190) mL. During the severe HS period, the median arterial systemic pressure was 39 (36-46) mm Hg, and the cardiac index was 1.7 (1.6-2.0) L/min/m 2 . There was statistically significant absolute decrease in the global longitudinal strain 2 hours postresuscitation comparing with the basal measurements (-9.6% [-10.7 to -8.0%] vs. -7.9% [-8.1 to -7.4%], p = 0.03). There were no statistically significant differences between the basal and 2 hours postresuscitation assessments in the invasive/noninvasive hemodynamic, other two-dimensional echocardiogram (LV ejection fraction, 49.2% [44-54.3%] vs. 53.2% [51.5-55%]; p = 0.09), and circumferential strain (-10.6% [-14.4 to -9.0%] vs. -8.5% [-8.6 to -5.2%], p = 0.06) parameters. CONCLUSION: In this experimental swine model of controlled HS, LV global longitudinal strain analysis accurately characterizes the timing and magnitude of subclinical cardiac dysfunction associated with trauma-induced secondary cardiac injury.

Biliary acute pancreatitis induction by sodium taurocholate infusion has been widely used by the scientific community due to the representation of the human clinical condition and reproduction of inflammatory events corresponding to the onset of clinical biliary pancreatitis. The severity of pancreatic damage can be assessed by measuring the concentration, speed, and volume of the infused bile acid. This study provides an updated checklist of the materials and methods used in the protocol reproduction and shows the main results from this acute pancreatitis (AP) model. Most of the previous publications have limited themselves to reproducing this model in rats. We have applied this method in mice, which provides additional advantages (i.e., the availability of an arsenal of reagents and antibodies for these animals along with the possibility of working with genetically modified strains of mice) that may be relevant to the study. For acute pancreatitis induction in mice, we present a systematic protocol, with a defined dose of 2.5% sodium taurocholate at an infusion speed 10 µL/min for 3 min in C57BL/6 mice that reaches its maximal level of severity within 12 h of induction and highlight results with outcomes that validate the method. With practice and technique, the total estimated time, from the induction of anesthesia to the completion of the infusion, is 25 min per animal.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the traditional printed form of the Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire with a proposed online form in terms of validity, reliability, and applicability. METHODS: A crossover design study was conducted with 157 undergraduate students. Half of the sample answered the printed questionnaire first and then answered the online questionnaire 7 days later, while the other half of the sample did the inverse. Cronbach's alpha was used to analyze the internal consistency of both the online and printed questionnaires. The construct validity was analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis, using a weighted least square mean and adjusted variance estimation and oblique rotation. The quality of the model was tested with fit indices. RESULTS: The confirmatory factor analysis showed the 19-item structure with five factors: χ2 of 230.718; degrees of freedom of 142; χ2/degrees of freedom of 1.625; comparative fit index of 0.978 and root mean square error of approximation of 0.073. All items presented factorial loads above 0.5. There was also excellent consistency between the formats of administration in all dimensions, with Cronbach's alpha values above 0.70. The stability between the formats of administration varied between 0.78 (95%CI: 0.69-0.85) and 0.84 (95%CI: 0.77-0.89), suggesting desirable confidence between both formats of administration. CONCLUSION: The five-factor model of the online Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire shows internal consistency both in terms of the scale dimensions as well as in terms of the total items.

OBJECTIVE: To compare differences in self-reported musculoskeletal pain before and after receiving rapid acupuncture for pain at an outpatient emergency department. METHODS: Exactly 102 patients presenting to the emergency room of the Hospital Servidor Publico Estadual in Sao Paulo, Brazil, participated in this before-and-after study. All participants had musculoskeletal pain and were treated with the technique proposed by Marques Filho. This emergency acupuncture involved inserting a needle at a point defined by traditional Chinese medicine and applying intense stimulation for 10 s; no more than two points were used on any individual patient. Pain was measured using a numerical visual scale before and immediately after the procedure. RESULTS: Participants in this study were mostly women (78%), had a college degree (47%) and were below the age of 60 (56%). The most common region of pain was the lower back (31%), and the most common type of pain was acute and exacerbated chronic pain. The meridians most commonly involved were the eight extra meridians (40%), and the points most often used for treatment were Houxi (SI3), Shenmai (BL62) and Zulinqi (GB41). Almost all participants reported a decrease in pain intensity, independent of sex, education level, pain site and pain type (acute/chronic; P < 0.05). At the end of the session, only 4% of the participants reported a desire for allopathic medication. CONCLUSION: This emergency acupuncture technique for analgesia appears to reduce musculoskeletal pain. ABSTRACT Objectives: to describe the profile of older adults who access the internet to search for health information and identify the factors that can influence older adults' decisions about their health based on information collected online. Methods: 391 older adults answered an online questionnaire regarding habits and satisfaction with information about health collected on the internet. Data processing involved Logistic Regression. Results: higher education reduces by 44% the likelihood of an older adult following the health recommendations on internet sites. However, social activities and self-perceived health increase the possibility of following the recommendations by 83% and 71%, respectively. The belief that the internet promotes healthy habits increases by 29.2 times the probability of an older adult following the advice. Final Considerations: knowing the profile of older adults who use the Internet can help professionals formulate public policies and build good information platforms on health and well-being.


RESUMO Objetivos: descrever o perfil dos idosos que acessam a internet para buscar informações sobre saúde e identificar os fatores que podem influenciar as decisões dos idosos sobre sua saúde com base nas informações coletadas online. Métodos: 391 idosos responderam a um questionário online sobre hábitos e satisfação com informações sobre saúde coletadas na internet. Processamento dos dados envolveu regressão logística. Resultados: ensino superior reduz em 44% a probabilidade de idosos seguirem recomendações de saúde em sites da internet. Porém, atividades sociais e autopercepção de saúde aumentam a possibilidade de seguir as recomendações em 83% e 71%, respectivamente. A crença de que a internet promove hábitos saudáveis aumenta em 29,2 vezes a probabilidade de idosos seguirem os conselhos. Considerações Finais: conhecer o perfil dos idosos que utilizam a internet pode auxiliar os profissionais na formulação de políticas públicas e na construção de boas plataformas de informação sobre saúde e bem-estar.

Resultados: la educación superior reduce en un 44% la probabilidad de que un anciano siga las recomendaciones de salud en los sitios web. Sin embargo, las actividades sociales y la salud autopercibida aumentan la posibilidad de seguir las recomendaciones en un 83% y un 71%, respectivamente. La creencia de que internet promueve hábitos saludables aumenta 29,2 veces la probabilidad de que un anciano siga un consejo. Consideraciones Finales: conocer el perfil de los ancianos que utilizan internet puede ayudar a los profesionales a formular políticas públicas y construir buenas plataformas de información sobre salud y bienestar.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate medication adherence and associated socioeconomic factors in elderly Brazilians. METHODOLOGY: This observational study was conducted with 159 elderly retired in an outpatient clinic in the city of São Paulo. Treatment adherence was assessed with the questions from the Morisky Green Levine Medication Adherence Questionnaire, and medications were classified using the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical system. Statistical tests and adjusted Poisson regression models were used to analyze variables. RESULTS: The study population was mostly female (67.5%), had an average age of, and took an average of 6.5 medications per day. The most commonly used drugs were agents acting on the renin-angiotensin system (67.9%), statins (62.3%), antithrombotic agents (48.4%), and biguanides (37.1%) for the treatment of hypertension (76.7%), dyslipidemia (54.1%), and diabetes (47.8%). The rate of adherence was below 60% in the groups of participants that were analyzed except for the high household income category, which had a rate of 75.8%. CONCLUSION: Medication adherence among the elderly was low in all categories except for the high household income category, a relevant finding that will help to understand medication adherence patterns in elderly Brazilians.
