Copper pollution has attracted global environmental concern. Widespread Cu pollution results in excessive Cu accumulation in human. Epidemiological studies and animal experiments revealed that Cu exposure might have reproductive toxicity. Cuproptosis is a recently reported Cu-dependent and programmed cell death pattern. However, the mechanism by which copper exposure might cause cell cuproptosis is largely unknown. We chose trophoblast cells as cell model and found that copper exposure causes trophoblast cell cuproptosis. In mechanism, copper exposure up-regulates lnc-HZ11 expression levels, which increases intracellular Cu2+ levels and causes trophoblast cell cuproptosis. Knockdown of lnc-HZ11 efficiently reduces intracellular Cu2+ levels and alleviate trophoblast cell cuproptosis, which could be further alleviated by co-treatment with DC or TEPA. These results discover novel toxicological effects of copper exposure and also provide potential target for protection trophoblast cells from cuproptosis in the presence of excessive copper exposure.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess well-defined, designable structures, holding great potential in enhancing product selectivity for electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) through active site engineering. Here, we report a novel MOF catalyst featuring pyrazolate-stabilized asymmetric Ni/Cu sites, which not only maintains structural stability under harsh electrochemical conditions but also exhibits extraordinarily high ethylene (C2H4) selectivity during CO2R. At a cathode potential of -1.3 V versus RHE, our MOF catalyst, denoted as Cu1Ni-BDP, manifests a C2H4 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 52.7% with an overall current density of 0.53 A cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, surpassing that on prevailing Cu-based catalysts. More remarkably, the Cu1Ni-BDP MOF exhibits a stable performance with only 4.5% reduction in C2H4 FE during 25 h of CO2 electrolysis. A suite of characterization tools─such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, operando X-ray diffraction, and infrared spectroscopy─and density functional theory calculations collectively reveal that the cubic pyrazolate-metal coordination structure and the asymmetric Ni-Cu sites in the MOF catalyst synergistically facilitate the stable formation of C2H4 from CO2.

The capture of radioactive I2 vapor from nuclear waste under industrial operating conditions remains a challenging task, as the practical industrial conditions of high temperature (≥150 °C) and low I2 concentration (∼150 ppmv) are unfavorable for I2 adsorption. We report a novel guanidinium-based covalent organic framework (COF), termed TGDM, which can efficiently capture I2 under industrial operating conditions. At 150 °C and 150 ppmv I2, TGDM exhibits an I2 uptake of ∼30 wt %, which is significantly higher than that of the industrial silver-based adsorbents such as Ag@MOR (17 wt %) currently used in the nuclear fuel reprocessing industry. Characterization and theoretical calculations indicate that among the multiple types of adsorption sites in TGDM, only ionic sites can bond to I2 through strong Coulomb interactions under harsh conditions. The abundant ionic groups of TGDM account for its superior I2 capture performance compared to various benchmark adsorbents. In addition, TGDM exhibits exceptionally high chemical and thermal stabilities that fully meet the requirements of practical radioactive I2 capture (high-temperature, humid, and acidic environment) and differentiate it from other ionic COFs. Furthermore, TGDM has excellent recyclability and low cost, which are unavailable for the current industrial silver-based adsorbents. These advantages make TGDM a promising candidate for capturing I2 vapor during nuclear fuel reprocessing. This strategy of incorporating chemically stable ionic guanidine moieties in COF would stimulate the development of new adsorbents for I2 capture and related applications.

RESUMEN

Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH), which uses sorbents to capture water vapor from the air and low-grade energy to produce fresh liquid water, has been recognized as a promising strategy for decentralized water supply in arid areas. This review aims to summarize the latest progress in this field and provide perspectives for the further development of SAWH, focusing on the design of sorbent materials and the optimization of the entire system. We first introduce the water sorption mechanisms on different sorbent materials. Next, we discuss the properties and performances of various sorbents developed for SAWH by categorizing them into specific groups: nanoporous solids, hygroscopic polymers, salt-based composites, and liquid sorbents; for each type of sorbent materials, we have analyzed its advantages and limitations, as well as design strategies. In addition, we discuss the influences of the mass and heat transport of the SAWH system on its overall performance in actual operations, and introduce different types of water harvesters developed for SAWH. In the last section, we outline the challenges in this field from fundamental research and practical application aspects, and describe roadmaps for the future development of this technology.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ocular biometric parameters in adult cataract patients from China and create an anterior chamber depth (ACD) regression model. METHODS: The ocular biometric records of 28,709 right eyes of cataract surgery candidates who were treated at Aier Eye Hospitals in nine cities from 2018 to 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. All measurements were taken with IOLMaster 700. We included patients who were at least 40 years old and were diagnosed with cataract. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 68.6 ± 11.0 years. The mean values recorded were as follows: axial length (AL), 24.17 ± 2.47 mm; mean keratometry (Km) value, 44.26 ± 1.70 D; corneal astigmatism (CA), 1.06 ± 0.96 D; ACD, 3.02 ± 0.45 mm; lens thickness (LT), 4.52 ± 0.45 mm; central corneal thickness (CCT), 0.534 ± 0.04 mm; and white to white (WTW) corneal diameter, 11.64 ± 0.46 mm. ACD correlated positively with AL (Spearman coefficient, 0.544) and WTW (0.300), but negatively with LT (-0.660) and age (-0.285) (all P < 0.01). In the multivariate regression analysis of ACD, which included LT, AL, WTW, sex, Km, CCT, and age, there was a reasonable prediction with adjusted R2 = 0.641. CONCLUSIONS: Cataract patients with longer AL and wider WTW have deeper ACD. With increasing age and lens thickening ACD becomes shallower. Based on the standardized coefficients of ACD multivariate regression analysis from the study, LT is the main factor that affects ACD, and is followed by AL.

Lignin, which is a component of wood, is difficult to degrade in nature. However, serious decay caused by microbial consortia can happen to wooden antiques during the preservation process. This study successfully screened four microbial consortia with lignin degradation capabilities (J-1, J-6, J-8 and J-15) from decayed wooden antiques. Their compositions were identified by genomic sequencing, while the degradation products were analyzed by GC-MS. The lignin degradation efficiency of J-6 reached 54% after 48 h with an initial lignin concentration of 0.5 g/L at pH 4 and rotation speed of 200 rpm. The fungal consortium of J-6 contained Saccharomycetales (98.92%) and Ascomycota (0.56%), which accounted for 31% of the total biomass. The main bacteria in J-6 were Shinella sp. (47.38%), Cupriavidus sp. (29.84%), and Bosea sp. (7.96%). The strongest degradation performance of J-6 corresponded to its composition, where Saccharomycetales likely adapted to the system and improved lignin degradation enzymes activities, and the abundant bacterial consortium accelerated lignin decomposition. Our work demonstrated the potential utilization of microbial consortia via the synergy of microbial consortia, which may overcome the shortcomings of traditional lignin biodegradation when using a single strain, and the potential use of J-6 for lignin degradation/removal applications.

Adsorption-based iodine (I2 ) capture has great potential for the treatment of radioactive nuclear waste. In this study, we apply a "multivariate" synthetic strategy to construct ionic covalent organic frameworks (iCOFs) with a large surface area, high pore volume, and abundant binding sites for I2 capture. The optimized material iCOF-AB-50 exhibits a static I2 uptake capacity of 10.21 g g-1 at 75 °C and a dynamic uptake capacity of 2.79 g g-1 at ≈400 ppm I2 and 25 °C, far exceeding the performances of previously reported adsorbents under similar conditions. iCOF-AB-50 also exhibits fast adsorption kinetics, good moisture tolerance, and full reusability. The promoting effect of ionic groups on I2 adsorption has been elucidated by experimentally identifying the iodine species adsorbed at different sites and calculating their binding energies. This work demonstrates the essential role of balancing the textural properties and binding sites of the adsorbent in achieving a high I2 capture performance.

Oxide-/hydroxide-derived copper electrodes exhibit excellent selectivity toward C2+ products during the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, the origin of such enhanced selectivity remains controversial. Here, we prepared two Cu-based electrodes with mixed oxidation states, namely, HQ-Cu (containing Cu, Cu2O, CuO) and AN-Cu (containing Cu, Cu(OH)2). We extracted an ultrathin specimen from the electrodes using a focused ion beam to investigate the distribution and evolution of various Cu species by electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy. We found that at the steady stage of the CO2RR, the electrodes have all been reduced to Cu0, regardless of the initial states, suggesting that the high C2+ selectivities are not associated with specific oxidation states of Cu. We verified this conclusion by control experiments in which HQ-Cu and AN-Cu were pretreated to fully reduce oxides/hydroxides to Cu0, and the pretreated electrodes showed even higher C2+ selectivity compared with their unpretreated counterparts. We observed that the oxide/hydroxide crystals in HQ-Cu and AN-Cu were fragmented into nanosized irregular Cu grains under the applied negative potentials. Such a fragmentation process, which is the consequence of an oxidation-reduction cycle and does not occur in electropolished Cu, not only built an intricate network of grain boundaries but also exposed a variety of high-index facets. These two features greatly facilitated the C-C coupling, thus accounting for the enhanced C2+ selectivity. Our work demonstrates that the use of advanced characterization techniques enables investigating the structural and chemical states of electrodes in unprecedented detail to gain new insights into a widely studied system.

The major cause of first-trimester pregnancy loss is chromosomal abnormality, which could be detected by many methods. Conventional karyotyping based on chorionic villi (CV) culture is frequently used but may have limitations due to culture failure and selective growth of cells. In this study, we aimed to investigate the degree of mosaicism present in villi by a combination of three different methods, namely conventional karyotyping following culture, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), with a view to exploring the incidence of selective growth of mosaic CV cells during the process of culture for conventional karyotyping. CV samples were obtained from 207 patients with early spontaneous miscarriage (ESM). There were 56 (56/207, 27.1%) samples with mosaic chromosome detected by FISH based on four or five types of probes in this study. The incidence of selective growth of mosaic cells during the process of conventional karyotyping was 6.0% (11/183). In addition, we found that mosaic cell lines as low as 2% could grow and completely dominate the outcome of karyotyping results. The selective growth of a particular cell line during culture, whether euploidy or aneuploidy, could supress the diagnosis of mosaicism.

BACKGROUND: Water deficit severely reduces apple growth and production, is detrimental to fruit quality and size. This problem is exacerbated as global warming is implicated in producing more severe drought stress. Thus water-efficiency has becomes the major target for apple breeding. A desired apple tree can absorb and transport water efficiently, which not only confers improved drought tolerance, but also guarantees fruit size for higher income returns. Aquaporins, as water channels, control water transportation across membranes and can regulate water flow by changing their amount and activity. The exploration of molecular mechanism of water efficiency and the gene wealth will pave a way for molecular breeding of drought tolerant apple tree. RESULTS: In the current study, we screened out a drought inducible aquaporin gene MdPIP1;3, which specifically enhanced its expression during fruit expansion in 'Fuji' apple (Malus domestica Borkh. cv. Red Fuji). It localized on plasma membranes and belonged to PIP1 subfamily. The tolerance to drought stress enhanced in transgenic tomato plants ectopically expressing MdPIP1;3, showing that the rate of losing water in isolated transgenic leaves was slower than wild type, and stomata of transgenic plants closed sensitively to respond to drought compared with wild type. Besides, length and diameter of transgenic tomato fruits increased faster than wild type, and in final, fruit sizes and fresh weights of transgenic tomatoes were bigger than wild type. Specially, in cell levels, fruit cell size from transgenic tomatoes was larger than wild type, showing that cell number per mm2 in transgenic fruits was less than wild type. CONCLUSIONS: Altogether, ectopically expressing MdPIP1;3 enhanced drought tolerance of transgenic tomatoes partially via reduced water loss controlled by stomata closure in leaves. In addition, the transgenic tomato fruits are larger and heavier with larger cells via more efficient water transportation across membranes. Our research will contribute to apple production, by engineering apples with big fruits via efficient water transportation when well watered and enhanced drought tolerance in transgenic apples under water deficit.

BACKGROUND: The relative contributions of a cluster of metabolic risk factors to pregnancy complications are not fully understood. We investigated the correlation between clustering of metabolic risk factors and adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was performed on pregnant women who sought health care during their whole gestation in a women's and children's hospital. The pregnancy outcomes were also followed. Pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity, as well as pregnancy high triglycerides, low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, hyperglycemia and raised blood pressure were defined as metabolic risk factors. Adverse pregnancy outcomes included preterm delivery, small/large for gestational age, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus, neonatal asphyxia and foetal demise. Stratified analyses were conducted on a total of 5535 women according to classification in each metabolic risk factor. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for adverse pregnancy outcomes according to the number of clustering metabolic factors was calculated using the logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The number of metabolic risk factors and adverse pregnancy outcomes were positively correlated (Ptrend < 0.001). Compared with women without a metabolic risk factor, women with one metabolic risk factor had a risk (OR = 1.67 95%CI 1.42-1.96) of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Women with a cluster of two metabolic risk factors tended to develop more adverse pregnancy outcomes (OR = 3.32 95% CI 2.69-4.10), and the risk was much higher in women with a cluster of three or more metabolic risk factors (OR = 10.40 95%CI 7.37-14.69). CONCLUSIONS: Pregnant women with a cluster of metabolic risk factors are more likely to have adverse pregnancy outcomes. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A prospective cohort study was conducted to determine whether chromosome aneuploidy increases the risk of early spontaneous abortions in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). A total of 1461 patients who conceived after IVF and embryo transfer were followed; 100 patients who had experienced clinical spontaneous abortion were recruited, 32 with PCOS and 68 without PCOS. Before 2013, genetic analysis comprised conventional cultured villus chromosome karyotyping and a multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification subtelomere assay combined with fluorescence in-situ hybridization; since 2013, array-based comparative genomic hybridization technique combined with chromosome karyotyping has been used. Age, BMI, pregnancy history, gestational age and total gonadotrophin dosage did not differ significantly between the PCOS and non-PCOS groups. In the PCOS group, 28.1% of abortuses demonstrated aneuploidy, which was significantly lower (P = 0.001) than in the non-PCOS group (72.1%). Further statistical analyses controlling for maternal age demonstrated that abortuses of women with PCOS were significantly less (P = 0.001) likely to have chromosome aneuploidy. Embryonic aneuploidy does not play a vital role in early spontaneous abortion in women with PCOS. Maternal factors resulting in endometrial disorders are more likely to be responsible for the increased risk of early spontaneous abortion in patients with PCOS.

Both hypertension and preeclampsia (PE) are considered as inflammatory diseases. Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is an inflammatory marker associated with lipid metabolism. We aimed to study the correlation and predictive value of Lp-PLA2 in postpartum hypertension after PE. A group of 160 PE patients (PE group) and a separate group of 160 normal pregnant women (control group) were recruited from January 2010 to October 2011. The average age in the PE group was 28.4 ± 4.5 years and the average gestational age was 34.7 ± 1.1 weeks. The average age in the control group was 27.8 ± 4.5 years and the average gestational age was 35.5 ± 1.2 weeks. General information (including age, gestational age, parity, history of metabolic disease, family history of high blood pressure, height, body weight before childbirth, and blood pressure) and blood samples were collected for measuring Lp-PLA2 and lipid parameters. From February to April in 2013, 153 cases in the PE group and 132 in the control group were re-called. We assessed their postpartum health, pregnancy, height, weight, and blood pressure. Serum mass of Lp-PLA2 in the PE group (210.67 ± 17.98 ng/mL) was significantly higher compared with that in the control group (174.72 ± 30.26 ng/mL) (P < 0.01). The pro-gestation BMI, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) were also significantly higher. Correlation analysis showed that the level of Lp-PLA2 and SBP (r = 0.31), LDL-C (r = 0.37) were positively correlated. The incidence of postpartum hypertension in the PE group was higher than that in the normal control group. Logistic regression analysis showed that prenatal Lp-PLA2 mass was an independent risk factor for PE postpartum hypertension (OR 1.134,95 % CI 1.086-1.185). ROC curve analysis showed that the sensitivity of predicting postpartum hypertension was 73.2% and the specific degree was 86.6%, with Lp-PLA2 level of 217.75 ng/mL for boundary value. The onset of postpartum hypertension in PE patients may contribute to vascular inflammation, which is associated with antepartum lipid metabolism.

In animals, the melatonin biosynthesis pathway has been well defined after the isolation and identification of the four key genes that are involved in the conversion of tryptophan to melatonin. In plants, there are special alternative catalyzing steps, and plant genes share very low homology with the animal genes. It was of interest to examine the phenotype of transgenic Micro-Tom tomato plants overexpressing the homologous sheep oAANAT and oHIOMT genes responsible for the last two steps of melatonin synthesis. The oAANAT transgenic plants have higher melatonin levels and lower indoleacetic acid (IAA) contents than control due to the competition for tryptophan, the same precursor for both melatonin and IAA. Therefore, the oAANAT lines lose the 'apical dominance' inferring that melatonin likely lacks auxin activity. The significantly higher melatonin content in oHIOMT lines than oAANAT lines provides new proof for the important role of ASMT in plant melatonin synthesis. In addition, the enhanced drought tolerance of oHIOMT lines will also be an important contribution for plant engineering.

Melatonin is a potent naturally occurring reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) scavenger in plants. Melatonin protects plants from oxidative stress and, therefore, it improves their tolerance against a variety of environmental abiotic stressors. N-acetylserotonin-O-methyltransferase (ASMT) is a specific enzyme required for melatonin synthesis. In this report, an ASMT gene was cloned from apple rootstock (Malus zumi Mats) and designated as MzASMT1 (KJ123721). The MzASMT1 expression was induced by drought stress in apple leaves. The upregulation of MzASMT1 in the apple leaf positively relates to melatonin production over a 24-hr dark/light cycle. Purified MzASMT1 protein expressed in E. coli converted its substrates to melatonin with an activity of approximately 5.5 pmol/min/mg protein. The transient transformation in tobacco identified that MzASMT1 is located in cytoplasm of the cell. When MzASMT1 gene driven by 35S promoter was transferred to Arabidopsis, melatonin levels in transgenic Arabidopsis plants were 2-4 times higher than those in the wild type. The transgenic Arabidopsis plants had significantly lower intrinsic ROS than the wild type and therefore these plants exhibited greater tolerance to drought stress than that of wild type. This is, at least partially, attributed to the elevated melatonin levels resulting from the overexpression of MzASMT1. The results elucidated the important role that membrane-located melatonin synthase plays in drought tolerance. These findings have significant implications in agriculture.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of hypertension in women with a history of preeclampsia (PE) and to estimate related risk factors. METHODS: In this prospective case-control study, we collected clinical data from 809 women with a history of PE and 3 421 women with normal pregnancy from January 2008 to June 2012. Between November 2012 and April 2013, 651 women in PE group and 2 684 women with normal pregnancy group were recruited at the same time for collecting postpartum data including blood pressure, blood glucose and blood lipid. Binary logistic regression analysis was applied to analyze the relative factors of postpartum blood pressure. RESULTS: Prevalence of hypertension in PE group was higher than those with normal pregnancy (17.2% (112/651) vs. 1.1% (30/2 684), P < 0.01). Prevalence of hypertension in severe PE and mild PE patients was similar (20.1% (58/289) vs. 15.2% (55/362), P = 0.103). Binary logistic regression analysis indicated that progestational body mass index (OR = 1.379, 95% CI: 1.257-1.510, P < 0.05) , antepartum systolic blood pressure (OR = 1.025, 95%CI:1.012-1.040, P < 0.05) , antepartum triglyceride (OR = 1.002, 95% CI: 1.002-1.410, P < 0.05) , antepartum fasting blood glucose (OR = 1.733, 95% CI: 1.047-2.870, P < 0.05) , postpartum body mass index (OR = 1.279, 95% CI: 1.199-1.363, P < 0.05), postpartum fasting insulin (OR = 1.107, 95% CI: 1.055-1.162, P < 0.05) , systolic blood pressure difference between antepartum and postpartum (OR = 1.024, 95% CI :1.011-1.037, P < 0.05) , difference on triglyceride value between antepartum and postpartum (OR = 1.26, 95% CI: 1.069-1.486, P < 0.01), difference value of HOMA-IR between antepartum and postpartum (OR = 2.448, 95% CI: 1.330-4.500, P < 0.01) and difference value of high density lipoprotein cholesterol between antepartum and postpartum (OR = 1.699, 95% CI: 1.277-2.260, P < 0.05) were associated with hypertension after pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS: Women with history of PE are associated with higher risk of postpartum hypertension. Increased blood pressure, abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism during pregnancy are major risk factors for postpartum hypertension.

With the progress in refractive cataract surgery, more intraocular lens (IOL) power formulas have been introduced with the aim of reducing the postoperative refractive error. The postoperative IOL position is critical to IOL power calculations. Therefore, the improvements in postoperative IOL position prediction will enable better selection of IOL power and postoperative refraction. In the past, the postoperative IOL position was mainly predicted by preoperative anterior segment parameters such as preoperative axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and corneal curvature. In recent years, some novel methods including the intraoperative ACD, crystalline lens geometry, and artificial intelligence (AI) of prediction of postoperative IOL position have been reported. This article attempts to give a review about the research progress on prediction of the postoperative IOL position.

Phytoene desaturase (PDS) is a critical functional enzyme in blocking ζ-carotene biosynthesis and is one of the bleaching herbicide targets. At present, norflurazon (NRF) is the only commercial pyridazine herbicide targeting PDS. Therefore, developing new and diverse pyridazine herbicides targeting PDS is urgently required. In this study, diflufenican (BF) was used as the lead compound, and a scaffold-hopping strategy was employed to design and synthesize some pyridazine derivatives based on the action mode of BF and PDS. The preemergence herbicidal activity tests revealed that compound 6-chloro-N-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-3-(3-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy)pyridazine-4-carboxamide (B1) with 2,4-diF substitution in the benzeneamino ring showed 100% inhibition rates against the roots and stems of Echinochloa crus-galli and Portulaca oleracea at 100 µg/mL, superior to the inhibition rates of BF. Meanwhile, compound B1 demonstrated excellent postemergence herbicidal activity against broadleaf weeds, which was similar to that of BF (inhibition rate of 100%) but superior to that of NRF. This indicated that 6-Cl in the pyridazine ring is the key group for postemergence herbicidal activity. In addition, compound B1 could induce downregulation of PDS gene expression, 15-cis-phytoene accumulation, and Y(II) deficiency and prevent photosynthesis. Therefore, B1 can be considered as a promising candidate for developing high-efficiency PDS inhibitors.

ABCG1 is an essential protein involved in the efflux of intracellular cholesterol to the extracellular space, thus playing a critical role in reducing cholesterol accumulation in neighboring tissues. Bibliometric analysis pertains to the interdisciplinary field of quantitative examination of diverse documents using mathematical and statistical techniques. It integrates the investigation of structural and temporal patterns in academic publications with an exploration of subject focus and forms of uncertainty. This research paper examines the historical evolution, current areas of interest, and future development trends of ABCG1 through bibliometric analysis. This study aims to offer readers insights into the research status and emerging trends of ABCG1, thereby assisting researchers in the exciting field to explore novel research avenues. Following rigorous selection, research on ABCG1 has remained highly active over the past two decades. ABCG1 has even started to emerge in previously unrelated fields, such as the field of cancer research. According to the analysis conducted by Citespace, a lot of keywords and influential citations were identified. ABCG1 has been found to establish a connection between cancer and cardiovascular disease, highlighting their interrelationship. This review aims to assist readers who have limited familiarity with ABCG1 research in gaining a rapid understanding of its developmental trajectory. Additionally, it aims to offer researchers potential areas of focus for future studies related to ABCG1.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate and optimize intraocular lens (IOL) power selection for cataract patients with high axial myopia receiving trifocal IOLs. DESIGN: A multi-center, retrospective observational case series was conducted. Patients having an axial length ≥26 mm and undergoing cataract surgery with trifocal IOL implanted were studied. METHODS: Preoperative biometric and postoperative outcome data from 139 eyes were collected to train and test various machine learning (ML) models (support vector machine, linear regression, and stacking regressor) using five-fold cross-validation. The models' performance was further validated externally using data from 48 eyes enrolled from other hospitals. Performance of seven IOL calculation formulas (BUII, Kane, EVO, K6, DGS, Holladay I, and SRK/T) were examined with and without ML models. RESULTS: The results of cross-validation revealed improvements across all IOL calculation formulas, especially for K6 and Holladay I. The model increased the percentage of eyes with a prediction error (PE) within ±0.50 D from 71.94% to 79.14% for K6, and from 35.25% to 51.80% for Holladay I. In external validation involving 48 patients from other centers, six out of seven formulas demonstrated a reduction in the mean absolute error (MAE). K6's PE within ±0.50 D improved from 62.50% to 77.08%, and Holladay I from 16.67% to 58.33%. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation of seven IOL power calculation formulas in high axial myopia cases and explored the effectiveness of the Stacking Regressor model in augmenting their accuracy. Of these formulas, K6 and Holladay I exhibited the most significant improvements, suggesting that integrating ML may have varying levels of effectiveness across different formulas but holds substantial promise in improving the predictability of IOL power calculations in patients with long eyes.
