BACKGROUND: To explore the cut-off values of haemoglobin (Hb) on adverse clinical outcomes in incident peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients based on a national-level database. METHODS: The observational cohort study was from the Peritoneal Dialysis Telemedicine-assisted Platform (PDTAP) dataset. The primary outcomes were all-cause mortality, major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and modified MACE (MACE+). The secondary outcomes were the occurrences of hospitalization, first-episode peritonitis and permanent transfer to haemodialysis (HD). RESULTS: A total of 2591 PD patients were enrolled between June 2016 and April 2019 and followed up until December 2020. Baseline and time-averaged Hb <100 g/l were associated with all-cause mortality, MACE, MACE+ and hospitalizations. After multivariable adjustments, only time-averaged Hb <100 g/l significantly predicted a higher risk for all-cause mortality {hazard ratio [HR] 1.83 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.19-281], P = .006}, MACE [HR 1.99 (95% CI 1.16-3.40), P = .012] and MACE+ [HR 1.77 (95% CI 1.15-2.73), P = .010] in the total cohort. No associations between Hb and hospitalizations, transfer to HD and first-episode peritonitis were observed. Among patients with Hb ≥100 g/l at baseline, younger age, female, use of iron supplementation, lower values of serum albumin and renal Kt/V independently predicted the incidence of Hb <100 g/l during the follow-up. CONCLUSION: This study provided real-world evidence on the cut-off value of Hb for predicting poorer outcomes through a nation-level prospective PD cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) are particularly susceptible to thromboembolism (TE). The phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) antibody (Ab) has been indicated to work as an independent risk predictor for venous TE in IMN. This study aimed to further explore the predictive value of PLA2R Ab for both venous and arterial TE in IMN patients. METHODS: A total of 91 IMN patients were retrospectively selected and divided into anti-PLA2R-positive or anti-PLA2R-negative groups according to the anti-PLA2R Ab titer (cutoff: 20 RU/mL). Serum PLA2R Abs were estimated using ELISA. Anti-PLA2R-positive IMN patients were further assigned into two groups based on the presence or absence of TE. RESULTS: Twelve (18.18%) IMN patients with anti-PLA2R positivity had TE, including both venous and arterial TE. No TE occurred in the anti-PLA2R-negative group. IMN patients in the anti-PLA2R-positive group had significantly higher levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein than those in the anti-PLA2R-negative group. No significant difference was observed in the anti-PLA2R Ab titer between patients with and without TE. Patients with TE were significantly older than those without TE. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that the positive status of anti-PLA2R Abs contributes to thrombosis formation in IMN.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the risk factors of refractory peritoneal dialysis related peritonitis (PDRP) and construct a nomogram to predict the occurrence of refractory PDRP. METHODS: Refractory peritonitis was defined as the peritonitis episode with persistently cloudy bags or persistent dialysis effluent leukocyte count >100 × 109/L after 5 days of appropriate antibiotic therapy. The study dataset was randomly divided into a 70% training set and a 30% validation set. Univariate logistic analysis, LASSO regression analysis, and random forest algorithms were utilized to identify the potential risk factors for refractory peritonitis. Independent risk factors identified using multivariate logistic analysis were used to construct a nomogram. The discriminative ability, calibrating ability, and clinical practicality of the nomogram were evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic curve, Hosmer-Lemeshow test, calibration curve, and decision curve analysis. RESULTS: A total of 294 peritonitis episodes in 178 patients treated with peritoneal dialysis (PD) were enrolled, of which 93 were refractory peritonitis. C-reactive protein, serum albumin, diabetes mellitus, PD duration, and type of causative organisms were independent risk factors for refractory peritonitis. The nomogram model exhibited excellent discrimination with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.781 (95% CI: 0.716-0.847) in the training set and 0.741 (95% CI: 0.627-0.855) in the validation set. The Hosmer-Lemeshow test and calibration curve indicated satisfactory calibration ability of the predictive model. Decision curve analysis revealed that the nomogram model had good clinical utility in predicting refractory peritonitis. CONCLUSION: This nomogram can accurately predict refractory peritonitis in patients treated with PD.

BACKGROUND: The urgency and risk of clinical nursing may cause nurses to experience traumatic stress, but it may also lead to posttraumatic growth. However, no study has comprehensively analyzed the prevalence of posttraumatic growth among nurses using a unified outcome measure and a validated assessment tool. AIM: This study aims to systematically assess the prevalence and factors of posttraumatic growth among nurses based on the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI). METHODS: Ten databases, including The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, Springerlink, Embase, Chinese Biomedical (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WanFang, and VIP databases, were searched as of December 31, 2022. The prevalence of posttraumatic growth was pooled using Stata 17.0 software. The PRISMA guideline was used to report the systematic review and meta-analysis. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42022365620. RESULTS: A total of 30 studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis, consisting of 14,022 nurses worldwide from four countries. In our study, the pooled mean score of posttraumatic growth among nurses was 66.34 (95% CI: 61.25-71.43). From 2015 to 2022, nurses' posttraumatic growth levels gradually increased. In addition, Turkey nurses have the lowest posttraumatic growth levelnurses who experienced workplace violence have a lower posttraumatic growth level compared with other nurses; while nurses aged over 30 and male have higher posttraumatic growth levels. CONCLUSIONS: While several studies on the prevalence of posttraumatic growth among nurses have been published, the reported data are quite different. Our systematic review and meta-analysis found that nurses' posttraumatic growth level was "moderate," and nurses' posttraumatic growth may vary based on publication year, country, traumatic event, age, and gender. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY: Our findings may provide a theoretical basis for hospital administrators and policy makers to scientifically manage human resources, comprehensively evaluate nurses' mental health, and promote nurses' posttraumatic growth in different traumatic events, which is conducive to the formulation and implementation of relevant policy guidelines.

OBJECTIVE: The serum triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a marker of inflammation. However, the relationship between TyG index and peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis (PDRP) is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the potential relationship between the baseline TyG index and the initial episode of PDRP. METHODS: A total of 208 peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients were enrolled from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2019 and followed up until December 31, 2022. They were divided into 2 groups according to the median TyG. The primary outcome was the occurrence of the initial episode of PDRP while on PD therapy. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression analyses were used to examine the association between them. RESULTS: Eighty-five initial episodes of PDRP were identified. The risk of PDRP was higher in the high-TyG index group (p = 0.030). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed a higher risk of PDRP in patients with a high TyG index (HR = 1.800, 95% CI 1.511-2.815, p = 0.010). CONCLUSION: The baseline serum TyG index was an independent risk factor for the initial episode of PDRP in chronic PD patients.

Drought and high salinity greatly affect plant growth and development. WRKY transcription factors play a key role in plant tolerance to abiotic stress, but the functions of WRKYs in the ornamental monocotyledon Iris laevigata remain largely unexplored. In this study, we cloned IlWRKY70 and found that it is a Group III WRKY localized in the nucleus. The expression of IlWRKY70 was induced by NaCl and PEG-6000, which reached peaks (4.38 and 5.65 times) after 3 h and 1 h, respectively. The exogenous overexpression of IlWRKY70 in N. tabacum significantly improved the resistance under NaCl and drought treatments, as evidenced by higher germination rates, longer root lengths, and increased fresh weights compared to those of control plants. In addition, transgenic seedlings showed significantly reduced wilting, higher photosynthetic performance, higher Fv/Fm and chlorophyll content, and lower stomatal conductance. Moreover, transgenic lines showed higher antioxidant enzymatic activities, lower reactive oxygen species (ROS), and lower malondialdehyde contents. Accordingly, we also found higher expressions of antioxidant defense genes, including SOD, CAT, and POD, in transgenic lines compared to controls under salt and drought stresses. Thus, IlWRKY70 enhances the abilities of salt and drought tolerances in plants, at least partially, via ROS regulation and can be used for breeding I. laevigata possessing enhanced salt and drought resistances.

AIMS: This study aimed to explore the effects of compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue on the posttraumatic growth of psychiatric nurses. BACKGROUND: Psychiatric nurses' prolonged and repeated exposure to trauma and complex situations in the work environment can lead to negative emotions such as compassion fatigue, but they also experience positive consequences such as posttraumatic growth, and the relationship between compassion fatigue and posttraumatic growth is not unclear. METHODS: A total of 336 nurses from psychiatry departments of seven tertiary hospitals in Sichuan Province, China, were administered an online questionnaire. Participants were recruited through convenience sampling. The posttraumatic growth level was measured with the Simplified Chinese version of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. The Professional Quality of Life Scale-Chinese version was used to assess compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress. T-test and one-way variance analysis, Pearson correlation analysis and hierarchical linear regression were used for data analysis. A STROBE checklist was used to guide the reporting of the research. RESULTS: Psychiatric nurses' posttraumatic growth is at a low level, influenced by demographic and occupational factors, whereas compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress are at a moderate level. Hierarchical regression analysis suggested that compassion satisfaction and secondary traumatic stress had a positive impact on posttraumatic growth, whereas burnout had a negative impact on posttraumatic growth. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that nursing managers should attach importance to the mental health of psychiatric nurses, improve compassion satisfaction, alleviate burnout and promote posttraumatic growth.

BACKGROUND: Nurses' secondary traumatic stress, compassion satisfaction and posttraumatic growth are closely related, but for newly graduated nurses, there are few reports to evaluate the specific path between these three. The aim of this study was to investigate examine the mediating role of compassion satisfaction in secondary traumatic stress and posttraumatic growth among newly graduated nurses. METHODS: From March 2021 to May 2021, a total of 330 newly graduated nurses from five tertiary hospitals in China were enrolled, and asked to complete questionnaires regarding secondary traumatic stress, compassion satisfaction and posttraumatic growth. Descriptive statistics, independent-samples T-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlation analysis and structural equation model were used in this study. A STROBE checklist was used to report findings. RESULTS: The scores of secondary traumatic stress, compassion satisfaction and posttraumatic growth of newly graduated nurses were 27.11 ± 4.94 (score range: 10-50), 31.89 ± 6.22 (score range: 10-50) and 56.47 ± 20.41 (score range: 0-100), respectively. Additionally, structural equation modeling showed that compassion satisfaction mediated the relationship between secondary traumatic stress and posttraumatic growth with the partial mediating effect of 0.089. CONCLUSIONS: Newly graduated nurses may experience moderate secondary traumatic stress, but their posttraumatic growth is at a low level, and compassion satisfaction significantly affects the relationship between the two. Nursing managers should strengthen psychological evaluation, and promote their posttraumatic growth by improving their level of compassion satisfaction.

Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) are a newly identified heterogeneous family of innate immune cells. We conducted this study to investigate the frequency of circulating ILC subsets in various chronic kidney diseases (CKD). In DN, the proportion of total ILCs and certain ILC subgroups increased significantly. Positive correlations between proportion of total ILCs, ILC1s and body mass index, glycated hemoglobin were observed in DN. In LN, a significantly increased proportion of ILC1s was found in parallel with a reduced proportion of ILC2s. The proportions of total ILCs and ILC1s were correlated with WBC count and the level of C3. In all enrolled patients, the proportion of total ILCs and ILC1s was significantly correlated with the levels of ACR and GFR. In the present study, the proportion of circulating ILC subsets increased significantly in various types of CKD and correlated with clinico-pathological features, which suggests a possible role for ILCs in CKD.

INTRODUCTION: Telemedicine (TM) has shown to provide potential benefits on clinical outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease but limited evidences published in the peritoneal dialysis (PD) population. This study aimed to explore the long-term effects of TM on the mortality and technique failure. METHODS: The Peritoneal Dialysis Telemedicine-assisted Platform Cohort Study (PDTAP Study) was conducted prospectively in 27 hospitals in China since 2016. Patient and practice data were collected through the doctor-end of the TM app (Manburs) for all participants. TM including self-monitoring records, on-line education materials, and real-time physician-patient contact was only performed for the patient-end users of the Manburs. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality. The secondary outcomes were cause-specific mortality and all-cause and cause-specific permanent transfer to hemodialysis. RESULTS: A total of 7,539 PD patients were enrolled between June 2016 and April 2019, with follow-up till December 2020. Patients were divided into two cohorts: TM group (39.1%) and non-TM group (60.9%). A propensity score was used to create 2,160 matched pairs in which the baseline covariates were well-balanced. There were significantly lower risks of all-cause mortality (HR 0.59 [0.51, 0.67], p < 0.001), CVD mortality (HR 0.59 [0.49, 0.70], p < 0.001), all-cause transfer to hemodialysis (0.57 [0.48, 0.67], p < 0.001), transfer to hemodialysis from PD-related infection (0.67 [0.51, 0.88], p = 0.003), severe fluid overload (0.40 [0.30, 0.55], p < 0.001), inadequate solute clearance (0.49 [0.26, 0.92], p = 0.026), and catheter-related noninfectious complications (0.41 [0.17, 0.97], p = 0.041) in the TM group compared with the non-TM group. CONCLUSION: This study indicated real-world associations between TM usage and reduction in patient survival and technique survival through a multicenter prospective cohort.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the correlation between N-terminal probrain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-(OH) D), high-mobility group box 1(HMGB1), endogenous activin A (ACTA), blood glucose level, electrolyte levels and developmental quotient (DQ) scores of Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). METHODS: In this retrospective study, a total of 90 neonates diagnosed with HIE who were admitted to our hospital from January 2018 to June 2021 were retrospectively enrolled, and 40 healthy full-term neonates born in our hospital during the same period were randomly selected. Neonates with HIE and healthy conditions were set as the study group and control group, respectively. Neonates with HIE are divided into three subgroups, mild, moderate, and severe, based on the severity of HIE. The Gesell Developmental Scale (GDS) was used to assess neural development of neonates at 9 to 12 months postnatal. Biomarkers of peripheral venous blood were measured and collected in all neonates, including NT-proBNP, (25-(OH) D), HMGB1, ACTA, electrolyte levels and blood glucose levels. General demographic information and Apgar score were compared between the two groups. The differences between the two groups of biomarkers were compared and the correlation between these biomarkers and DQ scores was evaluated. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in gestational age, maternal age, gender, way of birth, birth weight, gestational age and whether the mother was a primipara between the two groups (P>0.05). The 10 min Apgar score of the study group (5.87±0.36) was lower than that of the control group (9.37±0.32) with significant difference (P<0.05). The levels of NT-proBNP, HMGB1, and ACTA in the study group were higher than that in the control group (243.87±21.29 pmol/L vs. 116.98±22.19 pmol/L; 8.92±1.87 µg/L vs. 3.28±1.08 µg/L; 23.78±0.89 ng/ml vs. 2.98±0.38 ng/ml), while the levels of 25-(OH) D and electrolyte levels were lower than that in the control group (24.28±1.87 vs. 31.29±1.93; K+: 4.49±0.23 mmol/L vs. 4.73±0.21 mmol/L; Na+: 118.76±13.02 mmol/L vs. 134.28±12.29 mmol/L; Ca2+: 1.77±0.23 mmol/L vs. 2.35±0.26 mmol/L; Mg2+: 0.61±0.17 mmol/L vs. 0.91±0.17 mmol/L), with statistically significant differences (P<0.001). The levels of NT-probNP, HMGB1, ACTA and the incidence of hypoglycemia were the highest in the severe group, which were significantly higher than those in the moderate group and mild group (P<0.05). The levels of NT-probNP, HMGB1, ACTA and the incidence of hypoglycemia were the lowest in the mild group. The 25-(OH) D level, the incidence of hyperglycemia and electrolyte levels were the lowest in the severe group, which were significantly lower than those in the moderate and mild groups (all P<0.05). Meanwhile, the 25-(OH) D level, the incidence of hyperglycemia and electrolyte levels in the moderate group were lower than those in the mild group, and the differences were statistically significant (all P<0.05). The incidence of hyperglycemia in severe group (16 cases) was the lowest, significantly lower than that in moderate group (17 cases) and mild group (22 cases), and the difference was statistically significant (all P<0.05). The DQ scores of HIE neonates were negatively correlated with NT-proBNP, HMGB1, and ACTA (r=-0.671, -0.421, -0.518, all P< 0.001). The DQ scores was positively correlated with levels of 25-(OH) D and blood glucose level (r =0.621, 0.802, all P< 0.001). The DQ scores was also positively correlated with levels of potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium (0.367, 0.782, 0.218, 0.678, all P<0.001). CONCLUSION: The NT-proBNP, HMGB1, ACTA, 25-(OH) D, blood glucose levels and electrolyte levels are correlated with the severity of HIE, and developmental quotient scores in neonates with HIE. These biomarkers are suggestive for assessing the prognosis of neonate with HIE.

The adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health has been widely concerned, but the research on positive psychological factors is insufficient, this study aims to investigate the prevalence and factors of posttraumatic growth (PTG) among residents in the worst-hit areas of China (Hubei Province). We were conducted in three disaster areas with different severity in Hubei Province three months after the outbreak, and the data were from 575 respondents. Instruments included the simplified Chinese version of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (C-PTGI) and the public health emergency psychological questionnaire. Nonparametric tests, Spearman correlation analyses, and multiple linear regression equations were used to analyze the data. The results showed that three months after the outbreak of COVID-19, the PTG of Hubei residents was at a low level, and their sense of fear was the most prominent, with a positive detection rate of 82.09%. According to the results of this study, high PTG levels were associated with high levels of fear, married and healthcare providers, while low levels of PTG were associated with serious chronic diseases, males, good economic status, and poor prevention and control measures. Government departments should strengthen social support for residents, carry out necessary stress management training to help them correctly deal with negative emotions and promote their personal growth.

Iris laevigata is ideal for gardening and landscaping in northeast China because of its beautiful flowers and strong cold resistance. However, the short length of flowering time (2 days for individual flowers) greatly limits its applications. Molecular breeding and engineering hold high potential for producing I. laevigata of desirable flowering properties. A prerequisite is to identify and characterize key flowering control genes, the identity of which remains largely unknown in I. laevigata due to the lack of genome information. To fill this knowledge gap, we used sequencing data of the I. laevigata transcriptome to identify MADS-box gene-encoding transcription factors that have been shown to play key roles in developmental processes, including flowering. Our data revealed 41 putative MADS-box genes, which consisted of 8 type I (5 Mα and 3 Mß, respectively) and 33 type II members (2 MIKC* and 31 MIKCC, respectively). We then selected IlSEP3 and IlSVP for functional studies and found that both are localized to the nucleus and that they interact physically in vitro. Ectopic expression of IlSEP3 in Arabidopsis resulted in early flowering (32 days) compared to that of control plants (36 days), which could be mediated by modulating the expression of FT, SOC1, AP1, SVP, SPL3, VRN1, and GA20OX. By contrast, plants overexpressing IlSVP were phenotypically similar to that of wild type. Our functional validation of IlSEP3 was consistent with the notion that SEP3 promotes flowering in multiple plant species and indicated that IlSEP3 regulates flowering in I. laevigata. Taken together, this work provided a systematic identification of MADS-box genes in I. laevigata and demonstrated that the flowering time of I. laevigata can be genetically controlled by altering the expression of key MADS-box genes.

Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL, E.C.4.3.1.5) catalyzes the benzene propane metabolism and is the most extensively studied enzyme of the phenylpropanoid pathway. However, the role of PAL genes in Astragalus membranaceus, a non-model plant showing high capability toward abiotic stress, is less studied. Here, we cloned AmPAL and found that it encodes a protein that resides in the cytoplasmic membrane. The mRNA of AmPAL was strongly induced by NaCl or NaHCO3 treatment, especially in the root. Overexpressing AmPAL in Nicotiana tabacum resulted in higher PAL enzyme activities, lower levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), and better root elongation in the seedlings under stress treatment compared to the control plants. The protective role of AmPAL under saline-alkali stress was also observed in 30-day soil-grown plants, which showed higher levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), proline, and chlorophyll compared to wild-type N. Tabacum. Collectively, we provide evidence that AmPAL is responsive to multiple abiotic stresses and that manipulating the expression of AmPAL can be used to increase the tolerance to adverse environmental factors in plants.

Objective To investigate the pathogen distribution,imaging characteristics,and risk factors of pulmonary infection with multi-drug resistant organism (MDRO) in patients with severe craniocerebral injury,and establish and verify the risk prediction model. Methods A total of 230 patients with severe craniocerebral injury complicated with pulmonary infection were collected retrospectively.According to the 7∶3 ratio,they were randomly assigned into a modeling group (161 patients) and a validation group (69 patients).The risk factors of MDRO pulmonary infection were predicted with the data of the modeling group for the establishment of the risk prediction model.The data of the validation group was used to validate the performance of the model. Results Among the 230 patients,68 patients developed MDRO pulmonary infection.The isolated drug-resistant bacteria mainly included multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii,multi-drug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae,multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa,and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus,which accounted for 45.21%,23.29%,16.44%,and 15.07%,respectively.The imaging characteristics included pleural effusion,lung consolidation,and ground-glass shadow,which accounted for 72.06%,63.24%,and 45.59%,respectively.Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that the independent risk factors for MDRO pulmonary infection included age ≥60 years (P=0.003),history of diabetes (P=0.021),history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (P=0.038),mechanical ventilation ≥7 d (P=0.001),transfer from other hospitals (P=0.008),and coma (P=0.002).A risk scoring model was established with the ß value (rounded to the nearest integer) corresponding to each index in the regression equation.Specifically,the ß values of age ≥60 years,history of diabetes,history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,mechanical ventilation ≥7 d,transfer from other hospitals,and coma were 1,1,1,2,2,and 1,respectively (value ≥4 indicated a high-risk population).The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the modeling group and validation group were 0.845 and 0.809,respectively. Conclusions Multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii is the most common pathogen of MDRO pulmonary infection in patients with severe craniocerebral injury.Pleural effusion,lung consolidation,and ground-glass shadow were the most common imaging characteristics.The established risk model has high discriminant validity in both the modeling group and the validation group.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment has received attention as an important problem in patients with end-stage renal disease, although end-stage renal disease patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism have not been studied. PURPOSE: To assess the pattern of brain volume changes in end-stage renal disease patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism by using voxel-based morphometry and correlating these measures with clinical markers and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty end-stage renal disease patients with no anatomical abnormalities in conventional MRI (25 patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism, 14 men, mean age 42.20 ± 7.53 years; 25 patients without secondary hyperparathyroidism, 15 men, mean age 41.96 ± 6.17 years) were selected in this study. All patients underwent laboratory tests, neuropsychological tests, and MRI. Voxel-based morphometry analysis was performed to detect regional gray matter volume differences between the two groups. The relationships between abnormal gray matter volume and clinical markers and Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores were investigated. RESULTS: Voxel-based morphometry revealed increased gray matter volume in end-stage renal disease patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism in the bilateral caudate and bilateral thalamus compared with non- secondary hyperparathyroidism end-stage renal disease patients (P < 0.05, FWE corrected). Regarding the laboratory and neuropsychological tests, we found significant correlations between volume in these brain regions and intact parathyroid hormone levels and negative correlations with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores. There were no significant associations between brain volume changes and other clinical data (disease duration, urea, creatinine, and uric acid levels). CONCLUSION: Our results showed significantly increased gray matter volume in end-stage renal disease patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism, which was associated with intact parathyroid hormone levels and cognitive impairment. Serum intact parathyroid hormone levels may be a risk factor for cognitive impairment in end-stage renal disease patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism.

Coccidiosis is caused by multiple species of the apicomplexan protozoa Eimeria. Among them, Eimeria tenella is frequently considered to be the most pathogenic. Zinc finger proteins (ZnFPs) are a type of protein containing zinc finger domains. In the present study, a putative Eimeria tenella AN1-like ZnFP (E. tenella AN1-like zinc finger domain-containing protein, putative partial mRNA, EtAN1-ZnFP) was cloned and characterized, and its immune protective effects were evaluated. The 798-bp ORF sequence of EtAN1-ZnFP that encoded a protein of approximately 27.0 kDa was obtained. The recombinant EtAN1-ZnFP protein (rEtAN1-ZnFP) was expressed in Escherichia coli. Western blot analysis showed that the recombinant protein was recognized by the anti-GST monoclonal antibody and anti-sporozoite protein rabbit serum. qPCR analysis revealed that EtAN1-ZnFP was highly expressed in unsporulated oocysts and sporozoites. Immunostaining with an anti-rEtAN1-ZnFP antibody indicated that EtAN1-ZnFP was uniformly distributed in the cytoplasm of sporozoites, except for the refractive body; furthermore, this protein was evenly distributed in the cytoplasm of immature schizonts but seldom distributed in mature schizonts. The results of the in vitro invasion inhibition assay indicated that the antibodies against rEtAN1-ZnFP efficiently reduced the ability of E. tenella sporozoites to invade host cells. Animal challenge experiments demonstrated that the chickens immunized with rEtAN1-ZnFP protein significantly decreased mean lesion scores and fecal oocyst output compared with challenged control group. The results suggest that EtAN1-ZnFP can induce partial immune protection against infection with E. tenella and could be an effective candidate for the development of new vaccines.

AIM: To systematically evaluate the relationship between the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the risk of all-cause mortality or cardiovascular events in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched for cohort studies that were published since the databases were launched, until 1 April 2020. We selected papers according to specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, extracted data, and evaluated the quality of the citations. Data from eligible studies were used to calculate the combined hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: The search identified 1048 potentially eligible records, and 10 studies (n = 1442) were selected. Eight studies reported all-cause mortality, and two studies reported cardiovascular events. The combined HR of all-cause mortality was 1.45 (95% CI 1.20-1.75) and the HR of cardiovascular events was 1.52 (95% CI 1.33-1.72) when NLR was considered as a categorical variable. Similarly, the association between NLR and all-cause mortality was confirmed (HR 1.35; 95% CI 1.23-1.48) when NLR was used as a continuous variable. CONCLUSION: NLR is a predictor of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events in patients with chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic kidney disease experience a high burden of sleep disorders, and there are associations between sleep disorders and cognitive impairment. OBJECTIVES: Based on our previous cross-sectional survey on cognitive impairment in peritoneal dialysis, we further explored the relationship between sleep disorders and cognitive impairment, and predictors for declining cognitive function. METHOD: We conducted a multicenter prospective cohort study enrolling 458 clinically stable patients on peritoneal dialysis who were then followed up for 2 years.Demographic data, comorbidities, depression, and biochemistry data were collected at baseline. Sleep disorders including insomnia, restless legs syndrome, sleep apnea syndrome, excessive daytime sleepiness, possible narcolepsy, sleep walking and nightmares, and possible rapid eye movement behavior disorders were assessed using a panel of specific sleep questionnaires at baseline and in a second survey. Global cognitive function was measured at baseline and in a second survey, using the Modified Mini-Mental State Examination. Specific cognitive domains were evaluated using Trail-Making Test Forms A and B for executive function, and subtests of the Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status were used to asses immediate and delayed memory, visuospatial skills, and language ability. RESULTS: Sleep disorders were common among peritoneal dialysis patients. The prevalence of cognitive impairment evaluated by the Modified Mini-Mental State Examination (3MS) increased from 19.8 to 23.9%. Possible narcolepsy was associated with decreased Modified Mini-Mental State Examination scores at baseline. During follow-up, sleepwalking and nightmares were associated with higher risks of declined delayed memory in the longitudinal study. CONCLUSIONS: Possible narcolepsy was associated with general cognitive dysfunction, and sleep walking and nightmares were risk factors for impaired delayed memory.

Chicken coccidiosis is caused by the apicomplexan parasite Eimeria spp. At present, drug resistance of Eimeria is common because of the indiscriminate use of anticoccidial drugs. The gene encoding surface antigen 10 of Eimeria tenella (EtSAG10) is differentially expressed between drug-resistant and drug-sensitive strains. RNA-seq analysis indicated that this gene was downregulated in strains resistant to maduramicin and diclazuril compared to susceptible strains. EtSAG10 DNA sequence alignment revealed that they contained one and ten mutations in MRR and DZR, compared with DS, respectively. A full-length EtSAG10 cDNA was successfully cloned and expressed, and the polyclonal antibody was prepared. The transcription and translation levels of EtSAG10 were analyzed by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and Western blotting. The localization of EtSAG10 in Spz, Mrz, and parasites in the first asexual stage was determined by indirect immunofluorescence. The potential association of EtSAG10 with sporozoite invasion of host cells was assessed by invasion inhibition assays. The results showed that EtSAG10 had a predicted transmembrane domain at the C-terminal end and a predicted signal peptide at the N-terminal end. EtSAG10 was downregulated in drug-resistant strains, which is consistent with the RNA-seq results. The EtSAG10 protein was localized to the parasite surface and parasitophorous vacuole membrane. This protein was shown to play a role in the infection of chicken intestine by sporozoites.
