The interplay among frustrated lattice geometry, non-trivial band topology and correlation yields rich quantum states of matter in kagome systems1,2. A series of recent members in this family, AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb or Cs), exhibit a cascade of symmetry-breaking transitions3, involving the 3Q chiral charge ordering4-8, electronic nematicity9,10, roton pair density wave11 and superconductivity12. The nature of the superconducting order is yet to be resolved. Here we report an indication of dynamic superconducting domains with boundary supercurrents in intrinsic CsV3Sb5 flakes. The magnetic field-free superconducting diode effect is observed with polarity modulated by thermal histories, suggesting that there are dynamic superconducting order domains in a spontaneous time-reversal symmetry-breaking background. Strikingly, the critical current exhibits double-slit superconductivity interference patterns when subjected to an external magnetic field. The characteristics of the patterns are modulated by thermal cycling. These phenomena are proposed as a consequence of periodically modulated supercurrents flowing along certain domain boundaries constrained by fluxoid quantization. Our results imply a time-reversal symmetry-breaking superconducting order, opening a potential for exploring exotic physics, for example, Majorana zero modes, in this intriguing topological kagome system.

Superconductivity involving finite-momentum pairing1 can lead to spatial-gap and pair-density modulations, as well as Bogoliubov Fermi states within the superconducting gap. However, the experimental realization of their intertwined relations has been challenging. Here we detect chiral kagome superconductivity modulations with residual Fermi arcs in KV3Sb5 and CsV3Sb5 using normal and Josephson scanning tunnelling microscopy down to 30 millikelvin with a resolved electronic energy difference at the microelectronvolt level. We observe a U-shaped superconducting gap with flat residual in-gap states. This gap shows chiral 2a × 2a spatial modulations with magnetic-field-tunable chirality, which align with the chiral 2a × 2a pair-density modulations observed through Josephson tunnelling. These findings demonstrate a chiral pair density wave (PDW) that breaks time-reversal symmetry. Quasiparticle interference imaging of the in-gap zero-energy states reveals segmented arcs, with high-temperature data linking them to parts of the reconstructed vanadium d-orbital states within the charge order. The detected residual Fermi arcs can be explained by the partial suppression of these d-orbital states through an interorbital 2a × 2a PDW and thus serve as candidate Bogoliubov Fermi states. In addition, we differentiate the observed PDW order from impurity-induced gap modulations. Our observations not only uncover a chiral PDW order with orbital selectivity but also show the fundamental space-momentum correspondence inherent in finite-momentum-paired superconductivity.

The newly discovered kagome superconductors represent a promising platform for investigating the interplay between band topology, electronic order and lattice geometry1-9. Despite extensive research efforts on this system, the nature of the superconducting ground state remains elusive10-17. In particular, consensus on the electron pairing symmetry has not been achieved so far18-20, in part owing to the lack of a momentum-resolved measurement of the superconducting gap structure. Here we report the direct observation of a nodeless, nearly isotropic and orbital-independent superconducting gap in the momentum space of two exemplary CsV3Sb5-derived kagome superconductors-Cs(V0.93Nb0.07)3Sb5 and Cs(V0.86Ta0.14)3Sb5-using ultrahigh-resolution and low-temperature angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Remarkably, such a gap structure is robust to the appearance or absence of charge order in the normal state, tuned by isovalent Nb/Ta substitutions of V. Our comprehensive characterizations of the superconducting gap provide indispensable information on the electron pairing symmetry of kagome superconductors, and advance our understanding of the superconductivity and intertwined electronic orders in quantum materials.

BACKGROUND: National treatment guidelines of China evolving necessitates population-level surveillance of transmitted drug resistance (TDR) to inform or update HIV treatment strategies. METHODS: We analyzed the demographic, clinical, and virologic data obtained from people with HIV (PWH) residing in 31 provinces of China who were newly diagnosed between 2018 and 2023. Evidence of TDR was defined by the World Health Organization list for surveillance of drug resistance mutations. RESULTS: Among the 22 124 PWH with protease and reverse transcriptase sequences, 965 (4.36%; 95% CI, 4.1-4.63) had at least 1 TDR mutation. The most frequent TDR mutations were nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) mutations (2.39%; 95% CI, 2.19%-2.59%), followed by nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor mutations(1.35%; 95% CI, 1.2%-1.5%) and protease inhibitor mutations (1.12%; 95% CI, .98%-1.26%). The overall protease and reverse transcriptase TDR increased significantly from 4.05% (95% CI, 3.61%-4.52%) in 2018 to 5.39% (95% CI, 4.33%-6.57%) in 2023. A low level of integrase strand transfer inhibitor TDR was detected in 9 (0.21%; 95% CI, .1%-.38%) of 4205 PWH. CONCLUSIONS: Presently, the continued use of NNRTI-based first-line antiretroviral therapy regimen for HIV treatment has been justified.

BACKGROUND: In 2016, China has implemented the World Health Organization's "treat all" policy. We aimed to assess the impact of significant improvements in the 95-95-95 targets on population-level human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission dynamics and incidence. METHODS: We focused on 3 steps of the HIV care continuum: diagnosed, on antiretroviral therapy, and achieving viral suppression. The molecular transmission clusters were inferred using HIV-TRACE. New HIV infections were estimated using the incidence method in the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control HIV Modelling Tool. RESULTS: Between 2004 and 2023, the national HIV epidemiology database recorded 2.99 billion person-times of HIV tests and identified 1 976 878 new diagnoses. We noted a roughly "inverted-V" curve in the clustering frequency, with the peak recorded in 2014 (67.1% [95% confidence interval, 63.7%-70.5%]), concurrent with a significant improvement in the 95-95-95 targets from 10-13-<71 in 2005 to 84-93-97 in 2022. Furthermore, we observed a parabolic curve for a new infection with the vertex occurring in 2010. CONCLUSIONS: In general, it was suggested that the improvements in the 95-95-95 targets were accompanied by a reduction in both the population-level HIV transmission rate and incidence. Thus, China should allocate more effort to the first "95" target to achieve a balanced 95-95-95 target.

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) play a crucial function in solid tumor antigen clearance and immune suppression. Notably, 2D transitional metal dichalcogenides (i.e., molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanozymes) with enzyme-like activity are demonstrated in animal models for cancer immunotherapy. However, in situ engineering of TAMs polarization through sufficient accumulation of free radical reactive oxygen species for immunotherapy in clinical samples remains a significant challenge. In this study, defect-rich metastable MoS2 nanozymes, i.e., 1T2H-MoS2, are designed via reduction and phase transformation in molten sodium as a guided treatment for human breast cancer. The as-prepared 1T2H-MoS2 exhibited enhanced peroxidase-like activity (≈12-fold enhancement) than that of commercial MoS2, which is attributed to the charge redistribution and electronic state induced by the abundance of S vacancies. The 1T2H-MoS2 nanozyme can function as an extracellular hydroxyl radical generator, efficiently repolarizing TAMs into the M1-like phenotype and directly killing cancer cells. Moreover, the clinical feasibility of 1T2H-MoS2 is demonstrated via ex vivo therapeutic responses in human breast cancer samples. The apoptosis rate of cancer cells is 3.4 times greater than that of cells treated with chemotherapeutic drugs (i.e., doxorubicin).

BACKGROUND: Recurrent spontaneous miscarriage (RSM) is one of the complications during pregnancy. However, the pathogenesis of RSM is far from fully elucidated. OBJECTIVE: Since the endocytic pathway is crucial for cellular homeostasis, our study aimed to explore the roles of endocytic recycling, especially EH domain containing 1 (EHD1), a member of the endocytic recycling compartment, in RSM. STUDY DESIGN: We first investigated the expression of the endocytic pathway member EHD1 in villi from the normal and RSM groups. Then, we performed RNA sequencing and experiments in villi, HTR8 cells and BeWo cells to determine the mechanisms by which EHD1 induced RSM. Finally, placenta-specific EHD1-overexpressing mice were generated to investigate the RSM phenotype in vivo. RESULTS: EHD1 was expressed in extravillous trophoblasts (EVTs) and syncytiotrophoblast (STB) in the villi. Compared with the control group, RSM patients expressed higher EHD1. A high level of EHD1 decreased proliferation, promoted apoptosis, and reduced the migration and invasion of HTR8 cells by activating the TGFBR1-SMAD2/3 signaling pathway. The TGFBR1 antagonist LY3200882 partially reversed the EHD1 overexpression-induced changes in the cell phenotype. Besides, a high level of EHD1 also induced abnormal syncytialization, which disturbed maternal-fetal material exchanges. In a mouse model, placenta-specific overexpression of EHD1 led to the failure of spiral artery remodeling, excessive syncytialization and miscarriage. CONCLUSIONS: Increased expression of EHD1 impaired the invasion of EVTs mediated by the TGFBR1-SMAD2/3 signaling pathway and induced abnormal syncytialization of STB, which is at least partially responsible for RSM.

It has been theoretically predicted that perturbation of the Berry curvature by electromagnetic fields gives rise to intrinsic nonlinear anomalous Hall effects that are independent of scattering. Two types of nonlinear anomalous Hall effects are expected. The electric nonlinear Hall effect has recently begun to receive attention, while very few studies are concerned with the magneto-nonlinear Hall effect. Here, we combine experiment and first-principles calculations to show that the kagome ferromagnet Fe_{3}Sn_{2} displays such a magneto-nonlinear Hall effect. By systematic field angular and temperature-dependent transport measurements, we unambiguously identify a large anomalous Hall current that is linear in both applied in-plane electric and magnetic fields, utilizing a unique in-plane configuration. We clarify its dominant orbital origin and connect it to the magneto-nonlinear Hall effect. The effect is governed by the intrinsic quantum geometric properties of Bloch electrons. Our results demonstrate the significance of the quantum geometry of electron wave functions from the orbital degree of freedom and open up a new direction in Hall transport effects.

When expressed in vitro, the major capsid protein VP1 of a norovirus (NoV) can self-assemble into virus-like particles (VLPs), and its N-terminus can tolerate foreign sequences without the assembly being affected. We explored the effects of adding an N-terminal sequence to the VP1 of a GII.6 NoV strain on its cleavage and assembly. Sequences of varying lengths derived from the minor capsid protein VP2 were added to the VP1 N-terminus. Using a recombinant baculovirus expression system, the fusion proteins were expressed, and their cleavage patterns and assembly were analyzed using mass spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. All of the fusion proteins were successfully expressed and exhibited varying degrees of enzyme cleavage, most probably at the N-terminus. LC-MS results revealed that similar fragments were obtained for wild-type VP1 and fusion proteins, indicating that the cleavage sites were conserved. EM analysis indicated that VLPs of different sizes were successfully assembled for certain fusion proteins. The study data demonstrate that NoV VP1 can tolerate foreign sequences of a certain length at its N-terminus and that a conserved cleavage pattern exists, which might facilitate further investigation of the assembly and cleavage mechanisms of NoV.

Noroviruses (NoVs) are the chief cause of acute viral gastroenteritis worldwide. By employing the major capsid protein VP1 of a GII.6 NoV strain as an immunogen, we generated two monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) with wide-spectrum binding activities against NoV genogroup II (GII) VP1 proteins. One mAb (10G7) could bind to native and denatured GII-specific VP1 proteins. The other mAb (10F2) could bind to all tested native GII VP1 proteins, but not to denatured GII.3, GII.4, GII.7, or GII.17 VP1 proteins. Using GII.6/GII.4 fusion proteins, the mAb 10F2 binding region was confirmed to be located in the C-terminal P1 domain. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay based on peptides covering the P domain did not detect any binding. Using a panel of VP1 proteins with swapped regions, deletions, and mutations, the mAb 10F2 binding region was determined to be located between residues 496 and 513. However, the residue(s) responsible for its varied binding affinity for different denatured GII VP1 proteins remain to be identified. In summary, two NoV GII-specific cross-reactive mAbs were generated, and their binding regions were determined. Our results might facilitate the detection and immunogenic study of NoVs.

The discovery of enzyme-like catalytic characteristics in nanomaterials triggers the generation of nanozymes and their multifarious applications. As a class of artificial mimetic enzymes, nanozymes are widely recognized to have better stability and lower cost than natural bio-enzymes, but the lack of catalytic specificity hinders their wider use. To solve the problem, several potential strategies are explored, among which molecular imprinting attracts much attention because of its powerful capacity for creating specific binding cavities as biomimetic receptors. Attractively, introducing molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) onto nanozyme surfaces can make an impact on the latter's catalytic activity. As a result, in recent years, MIPs featuring universal fabrication, low cost, and good stability have been intensively integrated with nanozymes for biochemical detection. In this critical review, we first summarize the general fabrication of nanozyme@MIPs, followed by clarifying the potential effects of molecular imprinting on the catalytic performance of nanozymes in terms of selectivity and activity. Typical examples are emphatically discussed to highlight the latest progress of nanozyme@MIPs applied in catalytic analysis. In the end, personal viewpoints on the future directions of nanozyme@MIPs are presented, to provide a reference for studying the interactions between MIPs and nanozymes and attract more efforts to advance this promising area.

Controlling sludge concentration is an effective means to achieve PN. In this article, the reactor used domestic sewage as raw water and promoted the high enrichment of anammox bacteria by controlling the MLVSS of flocs to 1000-1500 mg/L and increasing the concentration of filler sludge. The measures to reduce the concentration of flocculent sludge increased the proliferation rate of the biofilm and provided sufficient substrate for AnAOB. After 102 days of operation, the abundance of Candidatus Brocadia increased from 0.43% during inoculation to 23.56% in phase VI. The ability of the microbial community to utilize energy metabolism and produce ATP was significantly improved, and the appropriate distribution of anammox bacteria and nitrifying, denitrifying bacteria in the ecological niche led to its high enrichment. In summary, this study proposes a strategy to promote the high enrichment of anammox bacteria in mainstream domestic sewage without adding any chemicals.

BACKGROUND: Node Reporting and Data System (Node-RADS) was proposed and can be applied to lymph nodes (LNs) across all anatomical sites. This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic performance of Node-RADS in cervical cancer patients. METHODS: A total of 81 cervical cancer patients treated with radical hysterectomy and LN dissection were retrospectively enrolled. Node-RADS evaluations were performed by two radiologists on preoperative MRI scans for all patients, both at the LN level and patient level. Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were employed to evaluate the distribution differences in size and configuration between patients with and without LN metastasis (LNM) in various regions. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and the area under the curve (AUC) were used to explore the diagnostic performance of the Node-RADS score for LNM. RESULTS: The rates of LNM in the para-aortic, common iliac, internal iliac, external iliac, and inguinal regions were 7.4%, 9.3%, 19.8%, 21.0%, and 2.5%, respectively. At the patient level, as the NODE-RADS score increased, the rate of LNM also increased, with rates of 26.1%, 29.2%, 42.9%, 80.0%, and 90.9% for Node-RADS scores 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively. At the patient level, the AUCs for Node-RADS scores > 1, >2, > 3, and > 4 were 0.632, 0.752, 0.763, and 0.726, respectively. Both at the patient level and LN level, a Node-RADS score > 3 could be considered the optimal cut-off value with the best AUC and accuracy. CONCLUSIONS: Node-RADS is effective in predicting LNM for scores 4 to 5. However, the proportions of LNM were more than 25% at the patient level for scores 1 and 2, which does not align with the expected very low and low probability of LNM for these scores.

This article investigates the impact of demographic and socioeconomic inequalities on wellness, composed of both physical health and subjective well-being. We examine how gender inequality moderates the joint effects of aging and income on wellness in China. Utilizing generalized linear mixed model (GLMM), we analyze data from the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) spanning from 2003 to 2021. Our results reveal that income inequality disproportionately affects physical health among older, underweight, lower-class females; males are more susceptible to negative impacts on subjective well-being, particularly among lower-class, middle-aged males. These gendered patterns are situated in the contemporary Chinese society and are explained in relation to intra-household distributional inequality and the gender role expectations in the Confucian culture. We also discussed the policy implications of how to reduce the gaps in wellness across social classes, age cohorts, and genders.

One-step adsorptive purification of ethylene (C2H4) from a ternary mixture of acetylene (C2H2), C2H4, and ethane (C2H6) by a single material is of great importance but challenging in the petrochemical industry. Herein, a chemically robust olefin-linked covalent organic framework (COF), NKCOF-62, is designed and synthesized by a melt polymerization method employing tetramethylpyrazine and terephthalaldehyde as cheap monomers. This method avoids most of the disadvantages of classical solvothermal methods, which enable the cost-effective kilogram fabrication of olefin-linked COFs in one pot. Furthermore, NKCOF-62 shows remarkably selective adsorption of C2H2 and C2H6 over C2H4 thanks to its unique pore environments and suitable pore size. Breakthrough experiments demonstrate that polymer-grade C2H4 can be directly obtained from C2H2/C2H6/C2H4 (1/1/1) ternary mixtures through a single separation process. Notably, NKCOF-62 is the first demonstration of the potential to use COFs for C2H2/C2H6/C2H4 separation, which provides a blueprint for the design and construction of robust COFs for industrial gas separations.

In previous studies, subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) has been associated with altered lipid profiles. However, since the discrepancy between these study results may reside in the great heterogeneity of the populations studied, this relationship is controversial. This study aimed to explore the changes in total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) between subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and well-matched euthyroid (EU) groups. Multiple databases were searched for publications before December 1, 2021, including cross-sectional studies on the association between SCH and lipid profile matched by age, gender, and BMI. Twenty-five articles with 3347 participants were included for meta-analysis. The results showed that the TC, TG, and LDL-c levels of the SCH groups were higher than the EU groups (TC, SMD=0.49, 95% CI 0.27, 0.71, p<0.001) (TG, SMD=0.43, 95% CI 0.21, 0.64, p<0.05 ) (LDL-c, SMD=0.75, 95% CI 0.46, 1.03, p<0.001 ). The HDL-c levels of the SCH group were lower than the control group (SMD=-0.53, 95% CI -0.81, -0.25, p<0.05). SCH has a larger impact on LDL-c than the other three indicators. After subgroup analyses, there was a larger impact on lipid alteration in the subgroup of TSH>10 µIU/ml, especially on LDL-c. This study found that SCH was associated with altered lipid profiles. Appropriate clinical treatment may be needed to prevent dyslipidemia and related diseases.

Iodine is an essential nutrient that may change the occurrence of autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT). Apoptosis and DNA methylation participate in the pathogenesis and destructive mechanism of AIT. We detected the methylation and the expression of mRNA of intrinsic apoptosis-associated genes (YWHAG, ING4, BRSK2 and GJA1) to identify the potential interactions between the levels of methylation in these genes and different levels of iodine. 176 adult patients with AIT in Shandong Province, China, were included. The MethylTargetTM assay was used to verify the levels of methylation. We used PCR to detect the mRNA levels of the candidate genes. Interactions between methylation levels of the candidate genes and iodine levels were evaluated with multiplicative and addictive interaction models and GMDR. In the AIT group, YWHAG_1 and six CpG sites and BRSK2_1 and eight CpG sites were hypermethylated, whereas ING4_1 and one CpG site were hypomethylated. A negative correlation was found between methylation levels of YWHAG and mRNA expression. The combination of iodine fortification, YWHAG_1 hypermethylation and BRSK2_1 hypermethylation was significantly associated with elevated AIT risk. A four-locus model (YWHAG_1 × ING4_1 × BRSK2_1 × iodine level) was found to be the best model of the gene-environment interactions. We identified abnormal changes in the methylation status of YWHAG, ING4 and BRSK2 in patients with AIT in different iodine levels. Iodine fortification not only affected the methylation levels of YWHAG and BRSK2 but also interacted with the methylation levels of these genes and may ultimately increase the risk of AIT.

Nanozyme-based multimode detection is a useful means to improve the accuracy and stability of analytical methods. However, both multifunctional nanozymes and related multimodal sensing strategies are still very scarce. Besides, they require complex processes to fabricate and operate. To fill this gap, here we propose a spontaneous interfacial in situ growth strategy to prepare a new bifunctional material (CePO4:Tb@MnOx) featuring good oxidase-like activity and green photoluminescence for the dual-mode colorimetric/luminescence determination of ascorbic acid (AA)-related biomarkers specifically. CePO4:Tb@MnOx was gained through the controllable redox reaction between KMnO4 and CePO4:Tb nanorods. It was interestingly found that MnOx in situ growth not only significantly enhanced the enzyme-like activity but also could reversibly regulate the luminescence of CePO4:Tb via a dual quenching mechanism. More interestingly, CePO4:Tb@MnOx exhibited a distinctive response toward AA against other reducing species. A double-coordination regulation mechanism was further verified to clarify the catalytic activity and luminescence switching behaviors in CePO4:Tb@MnOx. Based on these findings, a dual-mode colorimetric/luminescence approach was established for AA sensing in a "one-stone-two-birds" manner, providing excellent selectivity, sensitivity, and practicability. Furthermore, the determination of AA-related biomarkers, including acid phosphatase activity and organophosphorus residue, was also validated by the sensing principle. Our work not only deepens the understanding of the coordinated regulation of the luminescence and enzyme-like features in lanthanide-based materials but also offers a novel way to design and develop multifunctional nanozymes for advanced bioanalytical applications.

A giant coronary artery aneurysm (GCAA) concurrent with coronary artery fistula is a rare condition, and it becomes even more unusual when combined with a single coronary artery (SCA) anomaly. Here, we report such an extremely rare case, who is a 35-year-old woman presenting with severe chest distress. A GCAA with fistula to the right ventricle was noted, occurring in a single coronary artery, diagnosed by multimodality cardiovascular imaging techniques. Both GCAA and coronary artery fistula can cause severe cardiac complications, which jeopardize life. While an SCA is mostly asymptomatic, it may also lead to sudden cardiac death as well. Therefore, surgical intervention was recommended. We chose a novel thrombus-inducing strategy to eliminate the GCAA and repair the fistula. Symptoms were relieved after the surgery, and the patient remained asymptomatic over 8 months of follow-up.

Excess iodine will trigger the occurrence of autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT), and programmed death-1 (PD-1)/programmed death ligand (PD-L) will also contribute to the development of AIT. The purpose of this study was to explore the role that negative regulatory signals mediated by PD-1/PD-L play in the development of spontaneous autoimmune thyroiditis (SAT) in NOD.H-2h4 mice when they are exposed to iodine. Programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) antibody was administered intraperitoneally to NOD.H-2h4 mice. The relevant indicators were determined by flow cytometry, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, immunohistochemistry, pathological hematoxylin and eosin staining, and arsenic-cerium catalytic spectrophotometry. Results showed that the level of urinary iodine, the level of thyroid lymphocyte infiltration, the level of thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb) and interferon (IFN-γ)/tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α)/interleukin (IL-2)/IL-17, and the relative expression of PD-1/PD-L1/programmed death-2 (PD-L2) increased with the intervention of excess iodine. After the intervention of the PD-L1 antibody, the expression of PD-1/PD-L1/PD-L2 in different degrees was inhibited, but the level of thyroid lymphocyte infiltration and serum TgAb/IFN-γ/TNF-α/ IL-2/IL-17 did not decrease. Collectively, although PD-1/PD-L participates in the occurrence of SAT and induces inflammation, administration of the PD-L1 antibody does not effectively improve the pathological process of SAT. More research is needed to determine whether PD-1/PD-L intervention can treat autoimmune thyroid disease.
