BACKGROUND: Greenness exposure may lower blood pressure. However, few studies of this relationship have been conducted with children and adolescents, especially in low and middle-income countries. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate associations between greenness around schools and blood pressure among children and adolescents across China. METHODS: We recruited 61,229 Chinese citizens aged 6-18 years from 94 schools in a nationwide cross-sectional study in seven Chinese provinces/province-level municipalities. Participants' blood pressures and hypertension were assessed with standardized protocols. Greenness levels within 500 m and 1,000 m of each school were estimated with three satellite-based indices: vegetation continuous fields (VCF), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI). Generalized linear mixed models were used to evaluate associations between greenness and blood pressure, greenness and prevalent hypertension, using coefficient and odds ratio respectively. Stratified analyses and mediation analyses were also performed. RESULTS: One interquartile range increase in greenness was associated with a 17%-20% reduced prevalence of hypertension for all measures of greenness (odds ratios for VCF500m = 20% (95% CI:18%, 23%); for NDVI500m = 17% (95% CI:13%, 21%); and for SAVI500m = 17% (95% CI: 13%, 20%). Increases in greenness were also associated with reductions in systolic blood pressure (0.48-0.58 mmHg) and diastolic blood pressure (0.26-0.52 mmHg). Older participants, boys, and urban dwellers showed stronger associations than their counterparts. No evidence of mediation was observed for air pollution (i.e., NO2 and PM2.5) and body mass index. CONCLUSION: Higher greenness around schools may lower blood pressure levels and prevalent hypertension among Chinese children and adolescents, particularly in older subjects, boys, and those living in urban districts. Further studies, preferably longitudinal, are needed to examine causality.

Elevated blood homocysteine (Hcy) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. A growing number of studies have evaluated the link between air pollution and blood Hcy levels, but the results are inconsistent. To date, no systematic review of the published studies has been conducted yet. We aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of these studies. We systematically searched three international databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase) and four Chinese databases (Wanfang, CNKI, CBM, and VIP) for peer-reviewed epidemiological studies investigating associations between ambient air pollutants and Hcy levels published before December 2019. We screened literature, extracted data, assessed methodological quality, and evaluated the risk of bias of the included studies. Of 1157 identified articles, 10 were finally included in this systematic review. Most were cross-sectional studies and were performed in developed countries. Particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5) and/or 10 µm (PM10) were investigated in all of the included studies. Overall, the evidence generally supports a positive association between higher PM concentrations and elevated Hcy levels. However, high heterogeneity in terms of study participants, study design, exposure duration, and particle components and sources, low methodological quality and probable high risk of bias in some studies, and limited literature number precluded us from drawing a robust conclusion. Associations between Hcy and gaseous pollutants were explored in only one or two studies, and the results were inconclusive. Additional, well-designed studies remain required to validate the association between air pollution and Hcy.

This paper presents a microfluidics-based approach capable of continuously characterizing instantaneous Young's modulus (E(instantaneous)) and specific membrane capacitance (C(specific membrane)) of suspended single cells. In this method, cells were aspirated through a constriction channel while the cellular entry process into the constriction channel was recorded using a high speed camera and the impedance profiles at two frequencies (1 kHz and 100 kHz) were simultaneously measured by a lock-in amplifier. Numerical simulations were conducted to model cellular entry process into the constriction channel, focusing on two key parameters: instantaneous aspiration length (L(instantaneous)) and transitional aspiration length (L(transitional)), which was further translated to E(instantaneous). An equivalent distribution circuit model for a cell travelling in the constriction channel was used to determine C(specific membrane). A non-small-cell lung cancer cell line 95C (n = 354) was used to evaluate this technique, producing E(instantaneous) of 2.96 ± 0.40 kPa and Cspecific membrane of 1.59 ± 0.28 µF/cm2. As a platform for continuous and simultaneous characterization of cellular E(instantaneous) and C(specific membrane), this approach can facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of cellular biophysical properties.

BACKGROUND: Maternal exposure to fine particular matter (PM2.5) during pregnancy, including ambient and household PM2.5, has been linked with increased risk of preterm birth (PTB). However, the global spatio-temporal distribution of PTB-related deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) attributable to PM2.5 is not well documented. We estimated the global, regional, and national patterns and trends of PTB burden attributable to both ambient and household PM2.5 from 1990 to 2019. METHODS: Based on the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019 database, we obtained the numbers of deaths and DALYs as well as age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and age-standardized DALY rate (ASDR) of PTB attributable to total, ambient, and household PM2.5 by socio-demographic index (SDI) and sex during 1990-2019. The average annual percentage changes (AAPCs) were calculated to assess the temporal trends of attributable burdens. RESULTS: In 2019, 126,752 deaths and 11.3 million DALYs related to PTB worldwide (two-thirds in Western Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia) could be caused by excess PM2.5 above the theoretical minimum-risk exposure level (TMREL), of which 39 % and 61 % were attributable to ambient PM2.5 and household PM2.5, respectively. From 1990 to 2019, the global ASMR due to ambient PM2.5 increased slightly by 7.08 % whereas that due to household PM2.5 decreased substantially by 58.81 %, although the latter still dominated the attributable PTB burden, especially in low and low-middle SDI regions. Similar results were also observed for ASDRs. In addition, PTB burden due to PM2.5 was higher in male infants and in lower SDI regions. CONCLUSIONS: Globally in 2019, PM2.5 remains a great concern on the PTB burden, especially in Western Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Between 1990 and 2019, age-standardized burden of PTB due to ambient PM2.5 increased globally, while that due to household PM2.5 decreased markedly but still dominated in low and low-middle SDI regions.

Hyperglycemia is a key risk factor for death and disability worldwide. To better inform prevention strategies, we aimed to delineate and predict the temporal, spatial, and demographic patterns in mean fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels and their related disease burden globally. Based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, we estimated the distributions of mean FPG levels and high FPG-related disease burden by age, sex, year, socioeconomic status (SES), and geographical region from 1990 to 2050. We also investigated the possible associations of demographic, behavioral, dietary, metabolic, and environmental factors with FPG levels and high FPG-related disease burden. In 2019, the global mean FPG level was 5.40 mmol/L (95% uncertainty interval [UI]: 4.86-6.00), and high FPG contributed to 83.0 deaths (95% UI, 64.5-107.1) and 2,104.3 DALYs (95% UI: 1,740.7-2,520.7) per 100,000 people. For both historical (1990-2019) and future (2020-2050) periods, the mean FPG levels and the high FPG-related disease burden increased globally, with greater increases among the middle-aged and elderly, and people in low-to-middle SES countries, relative to their counterparts. Aging, unhealthy lifestyles, elevated body mass index, and lower air temperatures were potential risk factors for high FPG levels and the high FPG-related disease burden. This study demonstrates that high FPG continues to contribute to the global disease burden and is expected to do so for at least the next 30 years. Older people and those living in low-to-middle SES countries should receive more attention in glycemic management health interventions. In addition, effective interventions that target identified risk factors should be adopted to handle the increasingly large disease burden of high FPG.

Evidence concerning PM1 exposure, maternal blood pressure (BP), and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) is sparse. We evaluated the associations using 105,063 participants from a nationwide cohort. PM1 concentrations were evaluated using generalized additive model. BP was measured according to the American Heart Association recommendations. Generalized linear mixed models were used to assess the PM1-BP/HDP associations. Each 10 µg/m3 higher first-trimester PM1 was significantly associated with 1.696 mmHg and 1.056 mmHg higher first-trimester SBP and DBP, and with 11.4% higher odds for HDP, respectively. The above associations were stronger among older participants (> 35 years) or those educated longer than 17 years or those with higher household annual income (> 400,000 CNY). To conclude, first-trimester PM1 were positively associated with BP/HDP, which may be modified by maternal age, education level, and household annual income. Further research is warranted to provide more information for both health management of HDP and environmental policies enactment.

The rare edible and medicinal fungus Antrodia cinnamomea has a substantial potential for development. In this study, Illumina HiSeq 2000 was used to sequence its transcriptome. The results were assembled de novo, and 66,589 unigenes with an N50 of 4413 bp were obtained. Compared with public databases, 6,061, 3,257, and 2,807 unigenes were annotated to the Non-Redundant, Gene Ontology, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes databases, respectively. The genes related to terpene biosynthesis in the mycelia of A. cinnamomea were analyzed, and acetyl CoA synthase (ACS2 and ACS4), hydroxymethylglutaryl CoA reductase (HMGR), farnesyl transferase (FTase), and squalene synthase (SQS) were found to be upregulated in XZJ (twig of C. camphora) and NZJ (twig of C. kanehirae). Moreover, ACS5 and 2,3-oxidized squalene cyclase (OCS) were highly expressed in NZJ, while heme IX farnesyl transferase (IX-FIT) and ACS3 were significantly expressed in XZJ. The differential expression of ACS1, ACS2, HMGR, IX-FIT, SQS, and OCS was confirmed by real-time quantitative reverse transcription PCR. This study provides a new concept for the additional exploration of the molecular regulatory mechanism of terpenoid biosynthesis and data for the biotechnology of terpenoid production.

Exposure to green space has been proposed to be beneficially associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Many studies have explored this topic, but the results remain conflicting. We aimed to evaluate the epidemiological evidence on this topic by performing a systematic review with meta-analysis. We searched PubMed, Web of Science and Embase for studies on the association between green space and cardiovascular disease (CVD) that were published till January 2022. Two authors independently performed study selection, data extraction, quality assessment, and risk of bias assessment. For studies providing detailed numeric data, we also conducted quantitative meta-analyses and calculated the pooled odd ratios (ORs) for associations between the most commonly used exposure estimate (normalized difference vegetative index [NDVI]) and five CVD events: CVD mortality, ischemic heart disease (IHD) mortality, cerebrovascular disease (CBVD) mortality, and stroke incidence/prevalence. Additional analyses were conducted to explore the geographical scale effects of NDVI. Publication bias tests were also conducted. Of the 6787 records identified, 53 studies were eligible for inclusion. These studies covered 18 countries and included data from more than 100 million persons. Meta-analyses showed that a 0.1 increase in NDVI was significantly associated with 2-3% lower odds of CVD mortality (OR: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.96-0.99), IHD mortality (OR: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.96-1.00), CBVD mortality (OR: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.97-1.00), and stroke incidence/prevalence (OR: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.96-0.99). There was no significant difference between the pooled estimates for different buffer sizes. No evidence of publication bias was detected. We provide strong and robust evidence for the beneficial effects of green space exposure on cardiovascular health. More prospective studies and mechanistic studies, especially that conducted in low- and middle-income countries, are merited to strengthen our conclusions.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the association between pet ownership and threatened abortion (TA) in pregnant Chinese women. Materials and Methods: We enrolled pregnant women from 18 provinces and autonomous regions across China between November 2017 and December 2020. Participants were grouped based on the presence or absence of pet ownership. Pet owners were further sub-grouped based on the presence or absence of close contact with their pets. Pet species included cats, dogs, and both. Generalised linear mixed models, with province as a random effect, were used to estimate the associations between pet ownership and TA. Results: Pet ownership, whether or not one had close contact with pets, was associated with greater odds of TA (OR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.21, 1.40). Keeping pet cats (OR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.11, 1.40), dogs (OR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.18, 1.41), or both cats and dogs (OR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.68) during pregnancy were all risk factors for TA. We observed significant group differences (p for difference < 0.05) in pre-pregnancy body mass index, education levels, and annual household income. Conclusions: Cat or dog ownership during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of TA, especially among overweight, less educated, or lower-income participants.

BACKGROUND: Identifying factors associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) is critical for its prevention, but this topic is scarcely investigated in Kashgar prefecture, Xinjiang, northwestern China. We thus explored the CVD epidemiology and identified prominent factors associated with CVD in this region. METHODS: A total of 1,887,710 adults at baseline (in 2017) of the Kashgar Prospective Cohort Study were included in the analysis. Sixteen candidate factors, including seven demographic factors, 4 lifestyle factors, and 5 clinical factors, were collected from a questionnaire and health examination records. CVD was defined according to International Clinical Diagnosis (ICD-10) codes. We first used logistic regression models to investigate the association between each of the candidate factors and CVD. Then, we employed 3 machine learning methods-Random Forest, Random Ferns, and Extreme Gradient Boosting-to rank and identify prominent factors associated with CVD. Stratification analyses by sex, ethnicity, education level, economic status, and residential setting were also performed to test the consistency of the ranking. RESULTS: The prevalence of CVD in Kashgar prefecture was 8.1%. All the 16 candidate factors were confirmed to be significantly associated with CVD (odds ratios ranged from 1.03 to 2.99, all p values < 0.05) in logistic regression models. Further machine learning-based analysis suggested that age, occupation, hypertension, exercise frequency, and dietary pattern were the five most prominent factors associated with CVD. The ranking of relative importance for prominent factors in stratification analyses showed that the factor importance generally followed the same pattern as that in the overall sample. CONCLUSIONS: CVD is a major public health concern in Kashgar prefecture. Age, occupation, hypertension, exercise frequency, and dietary pattern might be the prominent factors associated with CVD in this region.In the future, these factors should be given priority in preventing CVD in future.

Evidence concerning effects of ambient air pollution on homocysteine (HCY) metabolism is scarce. We aimed to explore the associations between ambient particulate matter (PM) exposure and the HCY metabolism markers and to evaluate effect modifications by folate, vitamin B12, and methylenetetrahyfrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T gene polymorphism. Between December 1, 2017 and January 5, 2018, we conducted a panel study in 88 young college students in Guangzhou, China, and received 5 rounds of health examinations. Real-time concentrations of PMs with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 (PM2.5), ≤1.0 (PM1.0), and ≤0.1 (PM0.1) were monitored, and the serum HCY metabolism markers (i.e., HCY, S-Adenosylhomocysteine [SAH], and S-Adenosylmethionine [SAM]) were repeatedly measured. We applied linear mixed effect models combined with a distributed lag model to evaluate the associations of PMs with the HCY metabolism markers. We also explored effect modifications of folate, vitamin B12, and the MTHFR C677T polymorphism on the associations. We observed that higher concentrations of PM2.5 and PM1.0 were associated with higher serum levels of HCY, SAH, SAM, and SAM/SAH ratio (e.g., a 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 during lag 0 day and lag 5 day was significantly associated with 1.3-19.4%, 1.3-28.2%, 6.2-64.4%, and 4.8-28.2% increase in HCY, SAH, SAM, and SAM/SAH ratio, respectively). In addition, we observed that the associations of PM2.5 with the HCY metabolism markers were stronger in participants with lower B vitamins levels. This study demonstrated that short-term exposure to PM2.5 and PM1.0 was deleteriously associated with the HCY metabolism markers, especially in people with lower B vitamins levels.

BACKGROUND: Evidence concerning the effects of greenness on childhood visual impairment is scarce. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess whether greenness surrounding schools was associated with visual impairment prevalence and visual acuity levels in Chinese schoolchildren and whether the associations might be explained by reduced air pollution. METHODS: In September 2013, we recruited 61,995 children and adolescents 6-18 years of age from 94 schools in seven provinces/municipalities in China. Greenness exposure was assessed using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the soil-adjusted vegetation index (SAVI) from July to August 2013. Visual impairment was defined as at least one visual acuity level (dimensionless) lower than 4.9 (Snellen 5/6 equivalent). Three-year annual averages of particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤1µm (PM1) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at each school were assessed using machine learning methods. We used generalized linear mixed models to estimate the associations between greenness and prevalent visual impairment and visual acuity levels and used mediation analyses to explore the potential mediating role of air pollution. RESULTS: In the adjusted model, an interquartile range increase in NDVI500m was associated with lower odds of prevalent visual impairment [odds ratio (OR)=0.95; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.93, 0.97]. The same increase in NDVI500m was also associated with 0.012 (95% CI: 0.008, 0.015) and 0.011 (95% CI: 0.007, 0.015) increases in visual acuity levels for left- and right-eye, respectively. Our results also suggested that PM1 and NO2 significantly mediated the association between NDVI500m and visual impairment. Similar effect estimates were observed for SAVI500m, and our estimates were generally robust in several sensitivity analyses. DISCUSSION: These findings suggest higher greenness surrounding schools might reduce the risk of visual impairment, possibly owing in part to lower PM1 and NO2 in vegetated areas. Further longitudinal studies with more precise greenness assessment are warranted to confirm these findings. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP8429.

Multiple systematic reviews on greenspace and health outcomes exist, but the overall evidence base remains unclear. Therefore, we performed an umbrella review to collect and appraise all relevant systematic reviews of epidemiological studies on greenness exposure and health. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science from inception to June 28, 2021, and screened references of relevant articles. Systematic reviews with or without meta-analyses of epidemiological studies that examined the associations of greenness with any health outcome were included. Two independent investigators performed study selection and data extraction. We also evaluated the methodological quality of the included systematic reviews using the "Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews 2" checklist. A total of 40 systematic reviews and meta-analyses were included, of which most were cross-sectional studies conducted in high-income countries. Greenspace exposure was estimated with various objective and subjective parameters. Beneficial associations of greenspace with all-cause and stroke-specific mortality, CVD morbidity, cardiometabolic factors, mental health, low birth weight, physical activity, sleep quality, and urban crime were observed. No consistent associations between greenspace and other health outcomes (e.g., cancers) were observed. Most of the included systematic reviews and meta-analyses had one or more limitations in methodology. Our findings provide supportive evidence regarding the beneficial effects of greenspace exposure on some aspects of human health. However, the credibility of such evidence was compromised by methodological limitations. Better performed systematic reviews and meta-analyses as well as longitudinal designed primary studies are needed to validate this conclusion.

Several reviews have been conducted to assess the association between greenspace and overweight or obesity, but the conclusions were inconsistent. However, an updated comprehensive review and meta-analysis is warranted, because several high-quality papers have been published more recently. The objectives of this study are to systematically and quantitatively assess the evidence for a link between greenspace with overweight/obesity and to make specific recommendations for further research. We searched three English language databases, four Chinese language databases and the reference lists of previously published reviews for epidemiological studies on greenspace and overweight/obesity published before January 2020. We developed inclusion criteria, screened the literature and extracted key data from selected papers. We assessed methodological quality and risk of bias, and we graded the credibility of the pooled evidence. We also performed sensitivity analyses. Fifty-seven records met our inclusion criteria and were included in the study. Most studies were cross-sectional designs (81%) and were from developed nations (88%). More than half (55%) of the included studies found beneficial associations between greenspace and overweight/obesity in overall or subpopulations. Our meta-analytical results showed that greater normalized difference vegetation index was associated with lower odds of overweight/obesity in a statistically significant fashion (odds ratio [OR]: 0.88; 95% CI: 0.84, 0.91) but not residential proximity to greenspace (OR: 0.99; 95% CI: 0.99, 1.00), proportion of greenspace (OR: 0.96; 95% CI: 0.85, 1.08) or number of parks in an area (OR: 0.99; 95% CI: 0.97, 1.01). However, we detected high between-study heterogeneity in two of the four meta-analyses, which reduced the credibility of the pooled evidence. Current evidence indicates that there might be an association between greater access to greenspace and lower odds of overweight/obesity. However, additional high-quality studies are needed to more definitively assess the evidence for a causal association.

RESUMEN

The first complete chloroplast genome (cpDNA) sequence of Cinnamomum longipetiolatum was determined from Illumina HiSeq pair-end sequencing data in this study. The cpDNA is 158,603 bp in length, contains a large single copy region (LSC) of 89,386 bp and a small single copy region (SSC) of 18,181 bp, which were separated by a pair of inverted repeats (IR) regions of 25,511 bp. The genome contains 129 genes, including 84 protein-coding genes, eight ribosomal RNA genes, and 37 transfer RNA genes. The overall GC content of the whole genome is 39.0%, and the corresponding values of the LSC, SSC, and IR regions are 37.7%, 33.9%, and 43.0%, respectively. Further phylogenomic analysis showed that C. longipetiolatum clustered in a clade in genus Cinnamomum.

RESUMEN

The cpDNA is 149,016 bp in length, contains a large single copy region (LSC) of 91,915 bp and a small single copy region (SSC) of 17,703 bp, which were separated by a pair of inverted repeats (IR) regions of 19,699 bp. The genome contains 126 genes, including 81 protein-coding genes, eight ribosomal RNA genes, and 36 transfer RNA genes. The overall GC content of the whole genome is 39.0%, and the corresponding values of the LSC, SSC, and IR regions are 37.7%, 34.4%, and 44.4%, respectively. Further phylogenomic analysis showed that C. tonkinensis clustered in a clade in Lauraceae family.

RESUMEN

This paper presents a microfluidic system enabling continuous characterization of specific membrane capacitance (Cspecific membrane) and cytoplasm conductivity (σcytoplasm) of single cells in suspension. In this study, cells were aspirated continuously through a constriction channel while cell elongations and impedance profiles at two frequencies (1kHz and 100kHz) were measured simultaneously using microscopy imaging and a lock-in amplifier. 1kHz impedance data were used to evaluate cellular sealing properties with constriction channel walls and 100kHz impedance data were translated to quantify equivalent membrane capacitance and cytoplasm resistance of single cells, which were further translated to Cspecific membrane and σcytoplasm. Two model cell lines (kidney tumor cell line of 786-O (n=302) and vascular smooth muscle cell line of T2 (n=216)) were used to evaluate this technique, producing Cspecific membrane of 3.67±1.00 and 4.53±1.51µF/cm(2) and σcytoplasm of 0.47±0.09 and 0.55±0.14S/m, respectively. Compared to previously reported techniques which can only collect Cspecific membrane and σcytoplasm from tens of cells, this new technique has a higher throughput, capable of collecting Cspecific membrane and σcytoplasm from hundreds of cells in 30min immediately after cell passage.

This paper presents a microfluidic system enabling cell type classification based on continuous characterization of size-independent electrical properties (e.g., specific membrane capacitance (C(specific membrane)) and cytoplasm conductivity (σ(cytoplasm)). In this study, cells were aspirated continuously through a constriction channel, while cell elongation and impedance profiles at two frequencies (1 kHz and 100 kHz) were measured simultaneously. Based on a proposed distributed equivalent circuit model, 1 kHz impedance data were used to evaluate cellular sealing properties with constriction channel walls and 100 kHz impedance data were translated to C(specific membrane) and σ(cytoplasm). Two lung cancer cell lines of CRL-5803 cells (n(cell) = 489) and CCL-185 cells (n(cell) = 487) were used to evaluate this technique, producing a C(specific membrane) of 1.63 ± 0.52 µF cm(-2) vs. 2.00 ± 0.60 µF cm(-2), and σ(cytoplasm) of 0.90 ± 0.19 S m(-1)vs. 0.73 ± 0.17 S m(-1). Neural network-based pattern recognition was used to classify CRL-5803 and CCL-185 cells, producing success rates of 65.4% (C(specific membrane)), 71.4% (σ(cytoplasm)), and 74.4% (C(specific membrane) and σ(cytoplasm)), suggesting that these two tumor cell lines can be classified based on their electrical properties.
