RESUMEN

Five new derivatives were obtained utilizing 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzofurazan (NBD-chloride) in combination with furfurylamine, adamantylamine, aminohippuric acid, phenylalanine, and dehydroabietylamine. These derivatives were then subjected to a comparative analysis of their physical, chemical, and certain biological properties alongside two analogous and known compounds derived from the glycine and 4-amino-TEMPO free radical.

RESUMEN

Starting from dansyl-chloride, in reaction with 1,1-diphenylhydrazine and methoxyamine, two new fluorescent derivatives 1 and 2 were obtained and characterized by NMR, IR, UV-Vis, HR-MS, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The single-crystal X-ray structure was obtained for compound 2. Both compounds generate free radicals by oxidation, as demonstrated by ESR spectroscopy. Compound 1 generates the corresponding hydrazyl-persistent free radical, evidenced directly by ESR spectroscopy, while compound 2 generates in the first instance the methoxyaminyl short-lived free radical, which decomposes rapidly with the formation of the methoxy radical, evidenced by the ESR spin-trapping technique. By oxidation of compounds 1 and 2, their fluorescence is quenched.

RESUMEN

We report the synthesis, structure, and spectroscopic and dynamic magnetic properties of a series of heterodinuclear complexes, [ZnLn(LH4 )2 ](NO3 )3 ⋅6 H2 O (Ln=Nd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Yb), with the singly deprotonated form of a new compartmentalized Schiff-base ligand, LH5 . The Ln(III) ions in these systems show a distorted square-antiprism geometry with an LnO8 coordination sphere. EPR spectroscopy and DC magnetic studies have shown that the anisotropic nature of the complexes is far more complicated than predicted on the basis of a simple electrostatic model. Among the investigated systems, only the Dy(III) derivative showed single-ion magnet behavior, in zero and an applied magnetic field, both in pure polycrystalline samples and in a series of polycrystalline samples with different degrees of dilution at the single-crystal level in the isostructural Y(III) derivative. The rich dynamics observed as functions of frequency, field, and temperature reveals that multiple relaxation mechanisms are at play, resulting in a barrier of 189 cm(-1) , which is among the highest reported for a dinuclear Zn-Dy system. Analysis of the dynamic behavior as a function of dilution degree further evidenced the persistence of non-negligible intermolecular interactions, even at the lowest concentration of 1 %.

RESUMEN

The polynuclear compounds containing anisotropic metal ions often exhibit efficient barriers for blocking of magnetization at fairly arbitrary geometries. However, at variance with mononuclear complexes, which usually become single-molecule magnets (SMM) under the sole requirement of a highly axial crystal field at the metal ion, the factors influencing the SMM behavior in polynuclear complexes, especially, with weakly axial magnetic ions, still remain largely unrevealed. As an attempt to clarify these conditions, we present here the synthesis, crystal structures, magnetic behavior, and ab initio calculations for a new series of NiII-LnIII-WV trimetallics, [(CN)7W(CN)Ni(H2O)(valpn)Ln(H2O)4]·H2O (Ln = Y 1, Eu 2, Gd 3, Tb 4, Dy 5, Lu 6). The surprising finding is the absence of the magnetic blockage even for compounds involving strongly anisotropic DyIII and TbIII metal ions. This is well explained by ab initio calculations showing relatively large transversal components of the g-tensor in the ground exchange Kramers doublets of 1 and 4 and large intrinsic tunneling gaps in the ground exchange doublets of 3 and 5. In order to get more insight into this behavior, another series of earlier reported compounds with the same trinuclear [WVNiIILnIII] core structure, [(CN)7W(CN)Ni(dmf)(valdmpn)Ln(dmf)4]·H2O (Ln = GdIII 7, TbIII 8a, DyIII 9, HoIII 10), [(CN)7W(CN)Ni(H2O)(valdmpn)Tb(dmf)2.5(H2O)1.5]·H2O·0.5dmf 8b, and [(CN)7W(CN)Ni(H2O)(valdmpn)Er(dmf)3(H2O)1]·H2O·0.5dmf 11, has been also investigated theoretically. In this series, only 8b exhibits SMM behavior which is confirmed by the present ab initio calculations. An important feature for the entire series is the strong ferromagnetic coupling between Ni(II) and W(V), which is due to an almost perfect trigonal dodecahedron geometry of the octacyano wolframate fragment. The reason why only 8b is an SMM is explained by positive zero-field splitting on the nickel site, precluding magnetization blocking in complexes with fewer axial Ln ions. Further analysis has shown that, in the absence of ZFS on Ni ion, all compounds in the two series (except those containing Y and Gd) would be SMMs. The same situation arises for perfectly axial ZFS on Ni(II) with the main anisotropy axis parallel to the main magnetic axis of Ln(III) ions. In all other cases the ZFS on Ni(II) will worsen the SMM properties. The general conclusion is that the design of efficient SMMs on the basis of such complexes should involve isotropic or weekly anisotropic metal ions, such as Mn(II), Fe(III), etc., along with strongly axial lanthanides.

RESUMEN

4'-Azulenyl-substituted terpyridines were efficiently synthesized following the Kröhnke methodology via azulenylchalcone intermediates. These azulenyl-containing terpyridines showed fluorescent emission with a fluorescence quantum yield varying from 0.14, in the case of parent terpyridine, to 0.64 when methyl groups are grafted on the azulenyl seven-membered ring. According to the crystal structures and TDDFT calculations, different twisting of the aromatic constituents is responsible for the observed fluorescent behavior. The electrochemical profile contains one-electron oxidation/reduction steps, which can only be explained on the basis of the redox behavior of the azulene unit. The ability of the 4'-azulenyl 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine to bind poisoning metal cations was studied by UV-vis titrations using aqueous solutions of Hg(II) and Cd(II) chlorides as illustrative examples.

RESUMEN

Two novel bidimensional coordination polymers, [Co(azbbpy)(4,4'-bipy)0.5(DMF)(NCS)2]·MeOH (1) and [Co(azbbpy)(bpe)0.5(DMF)(NCS)2]·0.25H2O (2), resulted from the assembling of cobalt(II) ions by 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)azulene, using either 4,4'-bipyridyl or 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene as neutral spacers. The cobalt(II) nodes in 1 and 2 act as single-ion magnets (SIMs).

RESUMEN

This work reports the design and synthesis of novel oxadiazole-decorated azobenzenes, structural analysis of the resulting compounds and behavior under light irradiation. The synthetic strategy involved constructing amino functionalized heterocyclic key intermediates which were used either to yield electrophilic diazonium salts able to react with phenol moieties or as nucleophilic partners in Bayer-Mills reaction with nitroso-substituted derivatives. The amino-derived oxadiazole intermediates were investigated by absorption and emission spectroscopy providing blue and green emitted light. The target oxadiazole-decorated azobenzenes were structurally characterized, including solid-state structures, and subsequently used in irradiation experiments in order to take advantage of the azo group known to provide photoswitching abilities. We noticed quenching of the emissive properties in presence of the azo group; however, all compounds were very stable to repeated cycles of light irradiation. In addition, according to structural diversification we could obtain half-lives of the meta stable isomers within hours to hundreds of hours range. The experimental results were very well correlated with DFT calculations.

RESUMEN

Two families of homo- and heterometallic complexes, [Zn2L1(µ-OH)(H2O)2](ClO4)2, [Zn2L2(µ-OH)(H2O)2](ClO4)2, [Zn2L3(µ-OH)(H2O)2](ClO4)2, 1∞[{L1Zn2(µ-OH)}{µ-[Ag(CN)2]}](ClO4), [{L1Zn2(µ-OH)}2{µ-[Au(CN)2]}{[Au(CN)2]2}](ClO4)·H2O, 1∞[{L2Zn2(µ3-OH)}2(H2O){µ-[Ag(CN)2]}](ClO4)3·THF·0.5MeOH, 1∞[{L2Zn2(µ3-OH)}2(H2O){µ-[Au(CN)2]}](ClO4)3·THF·H2O, and 1∞[{L3Zn2(µ-OH)}{µ-[Ag(CN)2]}][Ag(CN)2]·H2O, respectively, have been synthesized and characterized. The Schiff bases used as ligands were obtained by condensation reactions of 2,6-diformyl-p-cresol with N,N-dimethyl-ethylenediamine (HL1), 2-aminomethyl-pyridine (HL2), and 2-aminoethyl-pyridine (HL3), respectively. The cytotoxic/cytostatic and genotoxic effects in cultured human MCF-7 (luminal type A breast cancer), MDA-MB-231 (triple negative breast cancer), HeLa (cervical carcinoma), and Lep-3 (non-tumor embryonal fibroblastoid cells) were studied. The investigations were performed by thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide test (MTT test), neutral red uptake cytotoxicity assay, crystal violet staining, hematoxylin and eosin staining, double staining with acridine orange and propidium iodide, AnnexinV/FITC, and Comet assay in short-term experiments (24-72 h, with monolayer cell cultures) as well as by 3D colony-forming method in long-term experiments (28 days, with 3D cancer cell colonies). The results obtained revealed that: (i) applied at a concentration range of 0.1-100 µg mL-1, the compounds investigated decrease in a time- and concentration-dependent manner the viability and/or proliferation of the treated cells; (ii) complexes of {Zn(II)Au(I)} show relatively higher cytotoxic/genotoxic activity and antitumor potential as compared to {Zn(II)Ag(I)}; (iii) some of the complexes demonstrate more pronounced cytotoxic potential than commercially available antitumor agents cisplatin, oxaliplatin, and epirubicin.

RESUMEN

4-Aminodiphenylamino derivatives were investigated for their antioxidant and hydrophobicity character, together with other biological measurements, such as antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity. Among these nine compounds used, we obtained novel derivatives via reaction of the starting material with NBD-chloride. Therefore, we performed a full structural analysis for these compounds, i.e., elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis, 1H- and 13C-NMR, ESI-MS, X-ray diffraction on single crystal, etc. The hydrophobicity of all the compounds was measured either experimentally using the RP-TLC technique, or via calculation using the fragments method. The other structural characteristics were analyzed, and a correlation between the experimental and computed properties was found. Moreover, the results of the biological evaluation showed that some of the synthesized compounds have antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity.

RESUMEN

Superoxide dismutases (SODs) stand in the prime line of enzymatic antioxidant defense in nearly all eukaryotic cells exposed to oxygen, catalyzing the breakdown of the superoxide anionic radical to O(2) and H(2)O(2). Overproduction of superoxide correlates with numerous pathophysiological conditions, and although the native enzyme can be used as a therapeutic agent in superoxide-associated conditions, synthetic low molecular weight mimetics are preferred in terms of cost, administration mode, and bioavailability. In this study we make use of the model eukaryote Saccharomyces cerevisiae to investigate the SOD-mimetic action of a mononuclear mixed-ligand copper(II) complex, [CuCl(acac)(tmed)] (where acac is acetylacetonate anion and tmed is N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine). Taking advantage of an easily reproducible phenotype of yeast cells which lack Cu-Zn SOD (Sod1p), we found that the compound could act either as a superoxide scavenger in the absence of native Sod1p or as a Sod1p modulator which behaved differently under various genetic backgrounds.

RESUMEN

A neutral 3D metal-organic framework, (3)(∞)[Cu(2)(mand)(2)(hmt)]·H(2)O (1), was constructed from binuclear Cu(2)O(2) alkoxo-bridged nodes, generated by the doubly deprotonated mandelic acid. The nodes are connected by hexamethylenetetramine (hmt) spacers, which act as biconnective bridging ligands, and by carboxylato groups. Channels are observed along the crystallographic c axis. The water molecules from the channels can be easily removed, preserving the architecture of the crystal, which is stable up to 280 °C. The Langmuir surface area was found to be 610 m(2) g(-1). The sorption ability of 1 was investigated using H(2) and CO(2).

RESUMEN

A novel dodecanuclear complex, [{(HL)(L)(DMF)Cu(II)Gd(III)(DMF)(H(2)O)}(6)]·6DMF (1; DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), has been obtained using the ligand resulting from the condensation of 3-formylsalicylic acid with hydroxylamine (H(3)L). The exchange interaction between the phenoxo-bridged Cu(II) and Gd(III) ions is weak ferromagnetic (J = +1.01 cm(-1)). The combination of a high-spin ground state with small anisotropy leads to a significant magnetocaloric effect [-ΔS(m)(0-7 T) = 23.5 J K g(-1) K(-1) at ∼2 K].

RESUMEN

Heterobimetallic [Zn(II)Ln(III)] complexes have been obtained using a compartmental Schiff-base ligand, H(2)valdmpn, resulting from the 2:1 condensation between o-vanillin and 2,2-dimethyl-propilenediamine: [Zn(H(2)O)(valdmpn)Sm(O(2)NO)(3)] 1, [Zn(H(2)O)(valdmpn)Tb(O(2)NO)(3)] 2a, [Zn(H(2)O)(valdmpn)Tb(O(2)NO)(3)]·H(2)O 2b, and [Zn(H(2)O)(valdmpn)Gd(O(2)NO)(3)]·H(2)O 3. The crystal structures of 1, 2b, and 3 have been solved. Compounds 1 and 2a crystallize in a non-centrosymmetric space group (P2(1)2(1)2(1)), being isomorphous. Crystals 2b and 3 are also isomorphous (space group P1[combining macron]). The complex entities in the four crystals are similar and their structures consist of binuclear species with the pentacoordinated zinc(II) ion hosted into the N(2)O(2) compartment and the lanthanide(III) ion in the large, open compartment, with a coordination number of 10. The photophysical properties of the four compounds have been investigated. Strong visible excited (excitation tails extend up to 420-430 nm) one photon antenna sensitization was obtained with the samarium(III) and terbium(III) derivatives. Following femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser at λ(ex) = 775 nm, both second-harmonic generation at λ(em) = 775/2 nm and two-photon induced emission in the VIS range were obtained, extending thus the excitation range of these complexes from the VIS to the NIR spectral range. The two-photon induced emission and second harmonic generation effect for a samarium(III) complex are reported for the first time.

RESUMEN

Arylazopyrazoles stand out among the azoheteroarene photoswitches due to their excellent properties in terms of stability of the least stable isomer and conversion between isomers, leading to their use in several interesting applications. We report herein the synthesis of arylazo-trifluoromethyl-substituted pyrazoles and their switching behavior under light irradiation. UV-vis and NMR experiments showed that arylazo-1H-3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyrazoles displayed very long half-lives in DMSO (days), along with reasonable values of other parameters that characterize a photoswitch. Inclusion of naphthyl moieties as aryl counterparts of the arylazopyrazoles is beneficial only in combination with trifluoromethyl groups, while extending the conjugation by grafting the pyrazole moiety with electron-donating or -withdrawing substituents positively affects the photoswitching behavior, in terms of isomerization yield and half-lives of the least stable isomer. The experimental values were correlated with theoretical calculations indicating the valuable influence of the trifluoromethyl groups onto the photoswitching behavior.

RESUMEN

A series of dinuclear [Ni(II)Ln(III)] Schiff-base complexes (using a Schiff-base dicompartmental ligand derived from o-vanillin [H(2)valpn = 1,3-propanediylbis(2-iminomethylene-6-methoxy-phenol)]) with Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and a hydroxo-bridged tetranuclear [Ni(II)Yb(III)] are reported. The crystal structures have been solved for 10 dinuclear complexes revealing four arrangements for the dinuclear units, which are modulated by the coordinated solvent molecules and the nitrato-anion interactions. The magnetic behaviors have been investigated, and the nature of the Ni(II)-Ln(III) exchange interaction has been emphasized by comparison with the behavior of the related [Zn(II)Ln(III)] derivatives. This allowed for establishing that the interaction within these compounds is antiferromagnetic with the 4f ions of the beginning of the Ln series and turns ferromagnetic from Gd(III) toward the end of the series. AC susceptibility investigations clearly show the occurrence of slow relaxation processes of the magnetization close to 2 K for the dinuclear [Ni(II)Dy(III)] complex.

RESUMEN

Herein, we report the synthesis, structural investigation, and magnetic and photophysical properties of a series of 13 [Zn(II)Ln(III)] heterodinuclear complexes, which have been obtained employing a Schiff-base compartmental ligand derived from o-vanillin [H(2)valpn = 1,3-propanediylbis(2-iminomethylene-6-methoxy-phenol)]. The complexes have been synthesized starting from the [Zn(valpn)(H(2)O)] mononuclear compound and the corresponding lanthanide nitrates. The crystallographic investigation indicated two structural types: the first one, [Zn(H(2)O)(valpn)Ln(III)(O(2)NO)(3)], contains 10-coordinated Ln(III) ions, while in the second one, [Zn(ONO(2))(valpn)Ln(III)(H(2)O)(O(2)NO)(2)]·2H(2)O, the rare earth ions are nine-coordinated. The Zn(II) ions always display a square-pyramidal geometry. The first structural type encompasses the larger Ln ions (4f(0)-4f(9)), while the second is found for the smaller ions (4f(8)-4f(11)). The dysprosium derivative crystallizes in both forms. Luminescence studies for the heterodinuclear compounds containing Nd(III), Sm(III), Tb(III), Dy(III), and Yb(III) revealed that the [Zn(valpn)(H(2)O)] moiety acts as an antenna. The magnetic properties for the paramagnetic [Zn(II)Ln(III)] complexes have been investigated.

RESUMEN

Electrocrystallization experiments with the chiral ethylenedithio-tetrathiafulvalene-methyl-oxazoline (EDT-TTF-OX) donors (R)-, (S)-, and (rac)-1 have provided two series of mixed-valence salts with the PF(6) (-) and [Au(CN)(2)](-) anions. Within each series the cell parameters are the same for the three R, S, and rac compounds, except for the space group, which is centrosymmetric triclinic P$\bar 1$ for the racemic forms and noncentrosymmetric P1 for the enantiopure salts. In the racemic salt [(rac)-1](2)PF(6) the two enantiomers crystallize disordered on the same crystallographic site with a site occupational factor of 0.6:0.4, whereas this type of disorder is not possible in the enantiopure salts. Both s-cis and s-trans conformations, when taking into account the mutual orientation of the TTF and oxazoline moieties, are present in this first series. In sharp contrast, in the series of salts [1](2)[Au(CN)(2)], only the s-trans conformation is observed with no structural disorder. Theoretical calculations at the DFT level of theory revealed a very small energy difference between the two stable planar s-cis and s-trans conformations, which are both energy minima in either neutral or oxidized states. Single-crystal conductivity measurements showed metallic-like behavior for all the salts down to 220-250 K with a smooth increase in resistivity at lower temperatures. The conductivity at room temperature is 5 S cm(-1) for [(rac)-1](2)PF(6), in which disorder was observed, whereas for [(R)-1](2)PF(6) and [(S)-1](2)PF(6) the average value is around 100 S cm(-1). In the second series of salts the conductivity at room temperature is 125-130 S cm(-1) for [(rac)-1](2)[Au(CN)(2)] and [(R)-1](2)[Au(CN)(2)]. Extended Hückel band structure calculations revealed identical features for the three salts of the [1](2)[Au(CN)(2)] series and are consistent with the electronic structures of quasi-one-dimensional conductors.

RESUMEN

The synthesis, structural investigation, and photophysical properties of a new heterobinuclear complex, [Zn(H(2)O)(valpn)Eu(NO(3))(3)], are reported [H(2)valpn = 1,3-propanediylbis(2-iminomethylene-6-metoxy-phenol)]. In the absence of the antenna-type sensitization of europium emission at room temperature, the strongest metal-centered emission was obtained following excitation into the (7)F(0)-(5)D(2) transition at 535 nm. In contrast, at 80 K, the strongest emission of europium was obtained by exciting into the maximum of a high-intensity, low-lying ligand-to-metal charge-transfer band (LMCT) located at approximately 425 nm. The overall temperature-induced changes of the photophysical properties of europium were assigned to the relative location of the LMCT and (3)pi pi* ligand states to the europium excited levels. The results may explain the lack of the antenna effects reported for some of the europium complexes with this type of ligand.
