RESUMEN

A judgment of leaning (JOL) has been investigated to understand self-regulated learning. However, asking participants to make JOLs may increase memory by creating a reactivity effect. In two experiments, we examined whether making JOLs would enhance memory by inducing item-specific processing. We compared a JOL task with two other tasks that are known to induce item-specific processing: pleasantness rating (Experiment 1) and single imagery (Experiment 2; creating vivid mental images). Participants learned a categorized or uncategorized list of words. Memory should be enhanced when the list promotes relational processing and the task induces item-specific processing. As expected, when the list was categorized, recall was higher in the JOL and item-specific processing conditions (pleasantness rating and single imagery) than in the control condition. Furthermore, recall was similar between the JOL and item-specific processing conditions. When the list was uncategorized, there was no difference in recall among the JOL, item-specific processing, and control conditions. Making JOLs enhances memory by inducing item-specific processing. We concluded that researchers need to carefully consider how making a JOL influences memory when investigating self-regulated study behaviors.

Because negative emotional memories are often disruptive, we conducted two experiments to reduce these memories by using a retroactive interference (RI) paradigm. In both experiments, participants were presented with highly negative pictures (List 1) followed by highly negative, moderately negative, or neutral pictures (List 2) or a rest period. Then, following a filler task, participants took a surprise free recall test, recalling pictures from List 1 in Experiment 1 and from both List 1 and List 2 in Experiment 2. In both experiments, recall of List 1 was reduced by List 2, indicating that RI was present. Furthermore, in Experiment 1, RI was similar between moderately negative and highly negative List 2 whereas in Experiment 2, RI was greater for highly negative List 2 than moderately negative List 2. These results showed that RI can be used to reduce negative emotional memories by making these memories inaccessible.

OBJECTIVE: Thyroid storm (TS) is a life-threatening endocrine emergency. This study aimed to achieve a better understanding of the management of TS by analyzing therapeutic modalities and prognoses reported by nationwide surveys performed in Japan. DESIGN, PATIENTS AND MEASUREMENTS: Retrospective analyses were performed on clinical parameters, outcomes, and treatments in 356 TS patients. RESULTS: Patient disease severities assessed via Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores significantly correlated with mortality. Free triiodothyronine (FT3) and the FT3/free thyroxine (FT4) ratio inversely correlated with disease severity. Methimazole (MMI) was used in the majority of patients (78·1%), and there were no significant differences in mortality or disease severity between those treated with MMI and those receiving propylthiouracil (PTU). Patients who received inorganic iodide (KI) demonstrated higher disease severity but no change in mortality compared to those who did not. Patients treated with corticosteroids (CSs) demonstrated significantly higher disease severity and mortality than those who were not. Disease severity in patients treated with intravenous administration of beta-adrenergic antagonists (AAs) was significantly higher than those treated with oral preparations, although no significant difference in mortality was observed between these groups. In addition, mortality was significantly higher in patients treated with non-selective beta-AAs as compared with other types of beta-AAs. CONCLUSION: In Japan, MMI was preferentially used in TS and showed no disadvantages compared to PTU. In severe TS, multimodal treatment, including administration of antithyroid drugs, KI, CSs and selective beta1 -AAs may be preferable to improve outcomes.

Thyroid storm is an endocrine emergency which is characterized by multiple organ failure due to severe thyrotoxicosis, often associated with triggering illnesses. Early suspicion, prompt diagnosis and intensive treatment will improve survival in thyroid storm patients. Because of its rarity and high mortality, prospective intervention studies for the treatment of thyroid storm are difficult to carry out. We, the Japan Thyroid Association and Japan Endocrine Society taskforce committee, previously developed new diagnostic criteria and conducted nationwide surveys for thyroid storm in Japan. Detailed analyses of clinical data from 356 patients revealed that the mortality in Japan was still high (∼11%) and that multiple organ failure and acute heart failure were common causes of death. In addition, multimodal treatment with antithyroid drugs, inorganic iodide, corticosteroids and beta-adrenergic antagonists has been suggested to improve mortality of these patients. Based on the evidence obtained by nationwide surveys and additional literature searches, we herein established clinical guidelines for the management of thyroid storm. The present guideline includes 15 recommendations for the treatment of thyrotoxicosis and organ failure in the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, and hepato-gastrointestinal tract, admission criteria for the intensive care unit, and prognostic evaluation. We also proposed preventive approaches to thyroid storm, roles of definitive therapy, and future prospective trial plans for the treatment of thyroid storm. We hope that this guideline will be useful for many physicians all over the world as well as in Japan in the management of thyroid storm and the improvement of its outcome.

Uncoupling of nitric oxide (NO) synthase (NOS) has been implicated in left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy (LVH) and dilatory remodeling induced by pressure overload. We investigated whether administration of sepiapterin, a substrate of the salvage pathway of tetrahydrobiopterin synthesis, prevents LVH and dilatory LV remodeling by inhibiting NOS uncoupling and increasing bioavailable NO. Pressure overload was induced in rats by transverse aortic constriction (TAC). Concentric LVH developed during 8 wk after TAC, and dilatory LV remodeling and dysfunction developed between 8 and 16 wk after TAC associated with a decrease in capillary density. Oral administration of sepiapterin or the superoxide/peroxynitrite scavenger N-(2-mercaptopropionyl)-glycine for 8 wk after TAC inhibited oxidative stress, but only sepiapterin increased bioavailable NO and inhibited cardiomyocyte hypertrophy associated with a further increase in capillary density. When sepiapterin was administered between 8 and 16 wk after TAC, cardiomyocyte hypertrophy was regressed and capillary density was restored. This was associated with the inhibition of interstitial fibrosis and dilatory LV remodeling. N-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester abrogated all the beneficial effects of sepiapterin in rats with TAC. These results suggest that sepiapterin prevents concentric LVH and dilatory remodeling after TAC primarily by increasing the bioavailability of NO.

Proteins from buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) are strong allergens that can cause serious symptoms, including anaphylaxis, in patients with hypersensitivity. In this study, we successfully developed a modified lactic acid bacterial vector (pNSH) and a recombinant strain of Lactococcus lactis NZ9000 (NZ9000) that produced a major allergenic storage protein of buckwheat, Fagag1 (61.2 kDa, GenBank accession number AF152003), with or without a green fluorescent protein (GFP) tag. GFP fluorescence allows for rapid, simple, and accurate measurement of target protein expression by microscopy or fluorimetry. We describe a convenient method for production of rGFP-Fagag1 fusion and rFagag1 proteins with a good yield in an advantageous probiotic host. We found that in vitro treatment of splenocytes isolated from buckwheat crude protein-immunized mice with rFagag1 increased the expression of allergic inflammation cytokines such as IL-4, IL-13, and IL-17 F. Because it was less antigenic, rGFP-Fagag1 protein from NZ9000 might be of limited use; however, rFagag1 from NZ9000 evoked a robust response as measured by induction of IL-4 and IL-17 F expression levels. The observed allergic activity is indicative of a Th2 cell-mediated immune response and is similar to the effects induced by exposure to buckwheat crude protein. Our results suggest that expression of rFagag1 in NZ9000 may facilitate in vivo applications of this system aimed at improving the specificity of immunological responses to buckwheat allergens.

As political information becomes increasingly prevalent in all forms of media, it is becoming increasingly important to understand when and why biases in remembering such information occur. Using an item-method directed forgetting procedure, we conducted two online experiments to determine the efficacy of admonitions to forget politically charged stimuli that were either congruent or incongruent with participants' political beliefs. Participants viewed slideshows wherein each item combined the face of a famous politician (Donald Trump or Joe Biden) with a word that was positive, negative, or neutral in emotional valence. Each slide was followed by an instruction to remember or forget. After a brief filler task, a recognition test assessed their memory for both remember and forget slides and (in Experiment 2) assessed their beliefs about the truth of each word/face pairing and beliefs about the accuracy of their memory. The results showed that for both liberal and conservative participants, politically congruent stimuli were more conducive to recognition memory and more resistant to directed forgetting than politically incongruent or neutral stimuli. There were small asymmetries wherein conservatives showed greater biases in memory and other cognitive measures. We discuss possible explanations of the results and their implications.

Resveratrol, a constituent of red wine, and γ-tocotrienol, a constituent of palm oil are important for cardioprotection. Although microRNAs are known regulators for genes involved in cardiac remodelling, the regulatory pathway involving microRNA has not been studied so far. We explored the cardioprotection by resveratrol, longevinex and γ-tocotrienol in ischaemia/reperfusion(I/R) model of rat and determined miRNA profile from isolated RNA. Systemic analyses of miRNA array and theirs targets were determined using a number of computational approaches. Resveratrol and γ-tocotrienol, either alone or in combination, modulated the expression pattern of miRNAs close to the control level based on PCA analyses. Differential expression was observed in over 75 miRNAs, some of them, such as miR-21 and miR-20b (anti-angiogenic) were previously implicated in cardiac remodelling. The target genes for the highest differentially expressed miRNA include genes of various molecular functions such as TGFß1-Smad3 signalling pathway, inflammation and their transcription factors, which may play key role in reducing I/R injury. Administration of antagomiR-20 attenuated I/R induced vascular endothelial growth factor and HIF1α level. All the interventions treated for 3 weeks lead to significant cardioprotection against ischaemia/reperfusion injury. A unique signature of miRNA profile is observed in control heart pretreated with resveratrol or γ-tocotrienol. We have determined specific group of miRNA in heart that have altered during IR injuries. Most of those altered microRNA expressions modulated close to their basal level in resveratrol or longevinex treated I/R rat. Interestingly, resveratrol and γ-tocotrienol resulted in synergestic action.

In this study, we successfully developed a recombinant strain of Lactococcus lactis NZ9000 (NZ9000) that produced green fluorescent protein fused to α(S1)-casein (GFP-α(S1)Cas). A modified lactic acid bacterial vector (pNZ8148#2) was constructed by inserting genes for GFP and α(S1)-casein, a major cow's milk allergen, and the resulting vector, pNZ8148#2-GFP-α(S1)Cas, was applied to the expression of recombinant GFP-α(S1)Cas protein (rGFP-α(S1)Cas) in NZ9000. After inducing expression with nisin, the production of rGFP-α(S1)Cas was confirmed by confocal laser microscopic analysis, and the expression conditions were optimized based on fluorescent analysis and western blotting results. Moreover, the in vitro treatment of splenocytes isolated from α-casein (≥70 % α(S)-casein)-immunized mice with rGFP-α(S1)Cas resulted in increased IL-13 mRNA expression. The observed allergic activity is indicative of the Th2-cell mediated immune response and is similar to the effects induced by exposure to α-casein. Our results suggest that the expression of rGFP-α(S1)Cas in NZ9000 may facilitate in vivo applications of this system aimed at improving the specificity of immunological responses to specific milk allergen.

Despite the potential benefit of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) therapy in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI), the efficacy of G-CSF in regenerating the heart after MI remains controversial. The authors hypothesize that the limited efficacy of G-CSF is related to its inhibitory effect on recruitment of bone marrow-derived cells (BMCs) to the infarcted tissue. MI was induced in rats with intrabone marrow-bone marrow transplantation from syngenic rats expressing green fluorescence protein to track BMCs. G-CSF was administered for five days after the onset of MI. G-CSF increased the number of CD45(+) cells in the peripheral circulation but did not increase their recruitment to the heart. G-CSF had no effect on myocardial stromal-derived factor-1 alpha and chemokine (C-X-C motif) receptor 4 (CXCR4) expression in mononuclear cells in the peripheral blood and CXCR4(+) cells in the heart. G-CSF had no effect on angiogenesis, myocardial fibrosis or left ventricular function four weeks after MI. These results suggest that G-CSF mobilizes BMCs to the peripheral circulation but does not increase recruitment to the infarcted myocardium despite preservation of the stromal-derived factor-1 alpha/CXCR4 axis.

The diabetic heart is known to be susceptible to ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury by increased oxidative stress. Although oxidative stress upregulates inducible nitric oxide (iNOS), the role of iNOS in I/R injury in the diabetic heart has been poorly understood. Because iNOS-derived nitric oxide (NO) plays a crucial role in cardioprotection against I/R injury, we hypothesized that inhibition of iNOS uncoupling would restore tolerance to I/R injury in the diabetic heart. The present study demonstrated that iNOS-derived superoxide generation was reduced, and that the NO bioavailability was increased, by treatment with the NOS-cofactor, tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), before I/R in the hearts isolated from diabetic rats. This was associated with a reduction of infarct size and improvement of left ventricular (LV) function after I/R. The cardioprotective effect of BH4 was abrogated by treatment with a thiol reducing agent dithiothreitol (DTT), but not a NO-sensitive guanylyl cyclase inhibitor ODQ, suggesting that iNOS-derived NO-mediated cardioprotection occurs through protein S-nitrosylation but not cGMP-dependent signaling in the diabetic heart. Indeed, protein S-nitrosylation was increased by treatment with BH4 in the diabetic heart and was inhibited by DTT. These results suggest that the inhibition of iNOS uncoupling unmasks tolerance to I/R injury through enhanced protein S-nitrosylation in the diabetic rat heart.

Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in disruption of neovascularization by alterations in thioredoxin 1 (Trx1) expression and its interaction with other proteins after myocardial infarction (MI). We previously showed that Trx1 has angiogenic properties, but the possible therapeutic significance of overexpressing Trx1 in chronic MI has not been elucidated. Therefore, we explored the angiogenic and cardioprotective potential of Trx1 in an in vivo MI model using transgenic mice overexpressing Trx1. Wild-type (W) and Trx1 transgenic (Trx1(Tg/+)) mice were randomized into W sham (WS), Trx1(Tg/+) sham (TS), WMI, and TMI. MI was induced by permanent occlusion of LAD coronary artery. Hearts from mice overexpressing Trx1 exhibited reduced fibrosis and oxidative stress and attenuated cardiomyocyte apoptosis along with increased vessel formation compared to WMI. We found significant inhibition of Trx1 regulating proteins, TXNIP and AKAP 12, and increased p-Akt, p-eNOS, p-GSK-3ß, HIF-1α, ß-catenin, VEGF, Bcl-2, and survivin expression in TMI compared to WMI. Echocardiography performed 30days after MI revealed significant improvement in myocardial functions in TMI compared to WMI. Our study identifies a potential role for Trx1 overexpression and its association with its regulatory proteins TXNIP, AKAP12, and subsequent activation of Akt/GSK-3ß/ß-catenin/HIF-1α-mediated VEGF and eNOS expression in inducing angiogenesis and reduced ventricular remodeling. Hence, Trx1 and other proteins identified in our study may prove to be potential therapeutic targets in the treatment of ischemic heart disease.

Uncoupling of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) has been implicated in left ventricular (LV) remodeling and dysfunction after myocardial infarction (MI). We hypothesized that inducible NOS (iNOS) plays a crucial role in LV remodeling after MI, depending on its coupling status. MI was created in wild-type, iNOS-knockout (iNOS(-/-)), endothelial NOS-knockout (eNOS(-/-)), and neuronal NOS-knockout (nNOS(-/-)) mice. iNOS and nNOS expressions were increased after MI associated with an increase in nitrotyrosine formation. The area of myocardial fibrosis and LV end-diastolic volume and ejection fraction were more deteriorated in eNOS(-/-) mice compared with other genotypes of mice 4 wk after MI. The expression of GTP cyclohydrolase was reduced, and tetrahydrobiopterin (BH(4)) was depleted in the heart after MI. Oral administration of sepiapterin after MI increased dihydrobiopterin (BH(2)), BH(4), and BH(4)-to-BH(2) ratio in the infarcted but not sham-operated heart. The increase in BH(4)-to-BH(2) ratio was associated with inhibition of nitrotyrosine formation and an increase in nitrite plus nitrate. However, this inhibition of NOS uncoupling was blunted in iNOS(-/-) mice. Sepiapterin increased capillary density and prevented LV remodeling and dysfunction after MI in wild-type, eNOS(-/-), and nNOS(-/-) but not iNOS(-/-) mice. N(ω)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester abrogated sepiapterin-induced increase in nitrite plus nitrate and angiogenesis and blocked the beneficial effects of sepiapterin on LV remodeling and function. These results suggest that sepiapterin enhances angiogenesis and functional recovery after MI by activating the salvage pathway for BH(4) synthesis and increasing bioavailable nitric oxide predominantly derived from iNOS.

1. Uncoupling of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in diabetes mellitus. In the present study, we investigated the role of NOS uncoupling in oxidative/nitrosative stress and LV dysfunction in the diabetic mouse heart. 2. Diabetes was induced in wild-type (WT), endothelial (e) NOS knockout (eNOS(-/-)), inducible (i) NOS knockout (iNOS(-/-)) and neuronal (n) NOS knockout (nNOS(-/-)) mice by streptozotocin (STZ) treatment. 3. In the diabetic heart, iNOS, but not eNOS or nNOS, expression was increased. Levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), 4-hydroxy-noneal (HNE) and nitrotyrosine (NT), as markers of oxidative/nitrosative stress, were increased in the diabetic mouse heart, but the increase in oxidative/nitrosative stress was significantly repressed in the iNOS(-/-) diabetic mouse heart. Levels of nitrite and nitrate (NO(x)), as an index of nitric oxide, bioavailability were significantly decreased in the iNOS(-/-) diabetic mouse heart. 4. Oral administration of sepiapterin (10 mg/kg per day), a precursor of tetrahydrobiopterin (BH(4)), significantly increased BH(4) and the BH(4)/BH(2) ratio in diabetic mouse heart. Similarly, sepiapterin inhibited the formation of HNE, MDA and NT in diabetic hearts from all three genotypes, but the increase in NO(x) following sepiapterin treatment was significantly attenuated in the iNOS(-/-) diabetic mouse heart. Percentage fractional shortening (FS), evaluated by echocardiography, decreased significantly in all genotypes of diabetic mice. Sepiapterin significantly increased percentage FS in diabetic mice, except in iNOS(-/-) mice. 5. These results suggest that sepiapterin inhibits uncoupling of NOS and improves LV function presumably by increasing iNOS-derived nitric oxide in the diabetic heart.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) represents a high risk of cardiovascular disease. We compared the effect of early intervention with pioglitazone versus voglibose on physical and metabolic profiles and serum adiponectin level in patients with T2DM associated with MetS. Sixty patients who were diagnosed for the first time as T2DM associated with MetS were analyzed for insulin sensitivity, lipid profile, serum adiponectin and systemic inflammation. Those patients were randomly assigned to oral pioglitazone group (n = 30) or voglibose group (n = 30) in addition to conventional diet and exercise training. Body mass index and waist circumference did not change in the pioglitazone group, whereas these physical parameters significantly decreased in the voglibose group during a 6-month follow-up period. However, glycosylated hemoglobin, fasting plasma glucose, and HOMA-IR more significantly decreased in the pioglitazone group. The level of serum adiponectin especially high-molecular weight adiponectin markedly increased in the pioglitazone group. Moreover, high sensitive CRP significantly decreased only in the pioglitazone group. These results suggest that voglibose is superior in improving obesity, while pioglitazone is superior in ameliorating insulin sensitivity and increasing serum adiponectin in patients with an early stage of T2DM associated with MetS.

We previously reported the strong immunostimulatory effects of a CpG oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN), designated MsST, from the lacZ gene of Streptococcus (S.) thermophilus ATCC19258. Here we show that 24h of stimulation with MsST in mouse splenocytes and peritoneal macrophages strongly induces expression of interleukin (IL)-33, a cytokine in the IL-1 superfamily. Other IL-1 superfamily members, including IL-1alpha, IL-1beta and IL-18, are down-regulated after 24h of stimulation of MsST. We also found that MsST-induced IL-33 mRNA expression is inhibited by the suppressive ODN A151, which can inhibit Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9)-mediated responses. This is the first report to show that IL-33 can be induced by CpG ODNs. The strong induction of IL-33 by MsST suggests that it may be a potential therapeutic ODN for the treatment of inflammatory disease. The presence of a strong CpG ODN in S. thermophilus also suggests that the bacterium may be a good candidate as a starter culture for the development of new physiologically functional foods.

BACKGROUND: Although ischemic postconditioning (IPost) confers cardioprotection by protecting the mitochondria though the activation of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), a potential drawback of IPost is impairment of aerobic ATP generation during reperfusion by repeated ischemia. This decrease in ATP might inhibit the restoration of sarcolemmal dystrophin, which is translocated during ischemia, and render cardiomyocytes susceptible to contraction-induced oncosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Isolated rat hearts were subjected to 30 min ischemia and 120 min reperfusion. IPost induced by 20 cycles of 10-s reperfusion and 10-s ischemia enhanced the activation of PI3K as evidenced by the increased phosphorylation of Akt, but had no effect on myocardial ATP, restoration of sarcolemmal dystrophin, or cardiomyocyte oncosis during IPost. Administration of the contractile blocker, 2,3-butanedione monoxim (BDM), during IPost increased myocardial ATP and facilitated the redistribution of dystrophin to the sarcolemma. This led to reduced cardiomyocyte oncosis and infarct size, and improved the left ventricular function. The anti-oncotic effect of BDM occurred without changing the anti-apoptotic effect of IPost. The PI3K inhibitor, LY294002, prevented the phosphorylation of Akt, decreased the recovery of ATP and restoration of sarcolemmal dystrophin, and blocked the anti-oncotic and anti-apoptotic effects of IPost. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the inhibition of contractile activity during IPost prevents cardiomyocyte oncosis and enhances cardioprotection through PI3K-dependent restoration of sarcolemmal dystrophin.

Previous studies have reported that our interpersonal knowledge shows an asymmetry; that is, we tend to believe that we know and understand other people's thoughts and feelings better than other people know and understand our own thoughts and feelings. In the present study, the authors compared American (114 men, 192 women) and Korean (99 men and 98 women) students to examine whether the asymmetry is greater in collectivistic than in individualistic culture in two types of relationships: horizontal (with best friends) and vertical (with parents). On all three items--Know, Understand, and Visibility--asymmetry was found for both horizontal and vertical relationships. Further, the Understand and Visibility items showed greater asymmetry for the Korean group than for the American group. It was concluded that asymmetry is greater in collectivistic than in individualistic culture. The cultural differences can be explained by self-consistency, sensitivity to social consequences, parent-child interaction, and living arrangement.

Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is a major contributory factor to cardiac dysfunction and infarct size that determines patient prognosis after acute myocardial infarction. Considerable interest exists in harnessing the heart's endogenous capacity to resist I/R injury, known as ischemic preconditioning (IPC). The IPC research has contributed to uncovering the pathophysiology of I/R injury on a molecular and cellular basis and to invent potential therapeutic means to combat such damage. However, the translation of basic research findings learned from IPC into clinical practice has often been inadequate because the majority of basic research findings have stemmed from young and healthy animals. Few if any successful implementations of IPC have occurred in the diseased hearts that are the primary target of viable therapies activating cardioprotective mechanisms to limit cardiac dysfunction and infarct size. Therefore, the first purpose of this review is to facilitate understanding of pathophysiology of I/R injury and the mechanisms of cardioprotection afforded by IPC in the normal heart. Then I focus on the problems and opportunities for successful bench-to-bedside translation of IPC in the diseased hearts.

Previous studies that examined age differences in hypermnesia reported inconsistent results. The present experiment investigated whether the different study materials in these studies were responsible for the inconsistency. In particular, the present experiment examined whether the use of a video, as opposed to words and pictures, would eliminate previously reported age differences in hypermnesia. Fifteen college students and 15 older adults viewed a 3-minute video clip followed by two free-recall tests. The results indicated that older adults, as a whole, did not show hypermnesia. However, when older adults were divided into low and high memory groups based on test 1 performance, the high memory group showed hypermnesia whereas the low memory group did not show hypermnesia. The older adults in the low memory group were significantly older than the older adults in the high memory group - indicating that hypermnesia is inversely related to age in older adults. Reminiscence did not show an age-related difference in either the low or high memory group whereas inter-test forgetting did show an age difference in the low memory group. As expected, older adults showed greater inter-test forgetting than young adults in the low memory group. Findings from the present experiment suggest that video produces a pattern of results that is similar to the patterns obtained when words and pictures are used as study material. Thus, it appears that the nature of study material is not the source of inconsistency across the previous studies.
