RESUMEN

The gravity harmonics of a fluid, rotating planet can be decomposed into static components arising from solid-body rotation and dynamic components arising from flows. In the absence of internal dynamics, the gravity field is axially and hemispherically symmetric and is dominated by even zonal gravity harmonics J2n that are approximately proportional to qn, where q is the ratio between centrifugal acceleration and gravity at the planet's equator. Any asymmetry in the gravity field is attributed to differential rotation and deep atmospheric flows. The odd harmonics, J3, J5, J7, J9 and higher, are a measure of the depth of the winds in the different zones of the atmosphere. Here we report measurements of Jupiter's gravity harmonics (both even and odd) through precise Doppler tracking of the Juno spacecraft in its polar orbit around Jupiter. We find a north-south asymmetry, which is a signature of atmospheric and interior flows. Analysis of the harmonics, described in two accompanying papers, provides the vertical profile of the winds and precise constraints for the depth of Jupiter's dynamical atmosphere.

Children with difficult tracheal intubation are at increased risk of severe complications, including hypoxaemia and cardiac arrest. Increasing experience with the simultaneous use of videolaryngoscopy and flexible bronchoscopy (hybrid) in adults led us to hypothesise that this hybrid technique could be used safely and effectively in children under general anaesthesia. We reviewed observational data from the international Pediatric Difficult Intubation Registry from 2017 to 2021 to assess the safety and efficacy of hybrid tracheal intubation approaches in paediatric patients. In total, 140 patients who underwent 180 attempts at tracheal intubation with the hybrid technique were propensity score-matched 4:1 with 560 patients who underwent 800 attempts with a flexible bronchoscope. In the hybrid group, first attempt success was 70% (98/140) compared with 63% (352/560) in the flexible bronchoscope group (odds ratio (95%CI) 1.4 (0.9-2.1), p = 0.1). Eventual success rates in the matched groups were 90% (126/140) for hybrid vs. 89% (499/560) for flexible bronchoscope (1.1 (0.6-2.1), p = 0.8). Complication rates were similar in both groups (15% (28 complications in 182 attempts) hybrid; 13% (102 complications in 800 attempts) flexible bronchoscope, p = 0.3). The hybrid technique was more likely than flexible bronchoscopy to be used as a rescue technique following the failure of another technique (39% (55/140) vs. 25% (138/560), 2.1 (1.4-3.2) p < 0.001). While technically challenging, the hybrid technique has success rates similar to other advanced airway techniques, few complications and may be considered an alternative technique when developing an airway plan for paediatric patients whose tracheas are difficult to intubate under general anaesthesia.

Crown rust, caused by Puccinia coronata f. sp. avenae (Pca), is a significant impediment to global oat production. Some 98 alleles at 92 loci conferring resistance to Pca in Avena have been designated; however, allelic relationships and chromosomal locations of many of these are unknown. Long-term monitoring of Pca in Australia, North America and elsewhere has shown that it is highly variable even in the absence of sexual recombination, likely due to large pathogen populations that cycle between wild oat communities and oat crops. Efforts to develop cultivars with genetic resistance to Pca began in the 1950s. Based almost solely on all all-stage resistance, this has had temporary benefits but very limited success. The inability to eradicate wild oats, and their common occurrence in many oat growing regions, means that future strategies to control Pca must be based on the assumption of a large and variable prevailing pathogen population with high evolutionary potential, even if cultivars with durable resistance are deployed and grown widely. The presence of minor gene, additive APR to Pca in hexaploid oat germplasm opens the possibility of pyramiding several such genes to give high levels of resistance. The recent availability of reference genomes for diploid and hexaploid oat will undoubtedly accelerate efforts to discover, characterise and develop high throughput diagnostic markers to introgress and pyramid resistance to Pca in high yielding adapted oat germplasm.

Remote observations of the asteroid (1) Ceres from ground- and space-based telescopes have provided its approximate density and shape, leading to a range of models for the interior of Ceres, from homogeneous to fully differentiated. A previously missing parameter that can place a strong constraint on the interior of Ceres is its moment of inertia, which requires the measurement of its gravitational variation together with either precession rate or a validated assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium. However, Earth-based remote observations cannot measure gravity variations and the magnitude of the precession rate is too small to be detected. Here we report gravity and shape measurements of Ceres obtained from the Dawn spacecraft, showing that it is in hydrostatic equilibrium with its inferred normalized mean moment of inertia of 0.37. These data show that Ceres is a partially differentiated body, with a rocky core overlaid by a volatile-rich shell, as predicted in some studies. Furthermore, we show that the gravity signal is strongly suppressed compared to that predicted by the topographic variation. This indicates that Ceres is isostatically compensated, such that topographic highs are supported by displacement of a denser interior. In contrast to the asteroid (4) Vesta, this strong compensation points to the presence of a lower-viscosity layer at depth, probably reflecting a thermal rather than compositional gradient. To further investigate the interior structure, we assume a two-layer model for the interior of Ceres with a core density of 2,460-2,900 kilograms per cubic metre (that is, composed of CI and CM chondrites), which yields an outer-shell thickness of 70-190 kilometres. The density of this outer shell is 1,680-1,950 kilograms per cubic metre, indicating a mixture of volatiles and denser materials such as silicates and salts. Although the gravity and shape data confirm that the interior of Ceres evolved thermally, its partially differentiated interior indicates an evolution more complex than has been envisioned for mid-sized (less than 1,000 kilometres across) ice-rich rocky bodies.

KEY MESSAGE: A new gene Rph28 conferring resistance to barley leaf rust was discovered and fine-mapped on chromosome 5H from wild barley. Leaf rust is a highly destructive disease of barley caused by the fungal pathogen Puccinia hordei. Genetic resistance is considered to be the most effective, economical and eco-friendly approach to minimize losses caused by this disease. A study was undertaken to characterize and fine map a seedling resistance gene identified in a Hordeum vulgare ssp. spontaneum-derived barley line, HEB-04-101, that is broadly effective against a diverse set of Australian P. hordei pathotypes. Genetic analysis of an F3 population derived from a cross between HEB-04-101 and the H. vulgare cultivar Flagship (seedling susceptible) confirmed the presence of a single dominant gene for resistance in HEB-04-101. Selective genotyping was performed on representative plants from non-segregating homozygous resistant and homozygous susceptible F3 families using the targeted genotyping-by-sequencing (tGBS) assay. Putatively linked SNP markers with complete fixation were identified on the long arm of chromosome 5H spanning a physical interval between 622 and 669 Mb based on the 2017 Morex barley reference genome assembly. Several CAPS (cleaved amplified polymorphic sequences) markers were designed from the pseudomolecule sequence of the Morex assembly (v1.0 and v2.0), and 16 polymorphic markers were able to delineate the RphHEB locus to a 0.05 cM genetic interval spanning 98.6 kb. Based on its effectiveness and wild origin, RphHEB is distinct from all other designated Rph genes located on chromosome 5H and therefore the new locus symbol Rph28 is recommended for RphHEB in accordance with the rules and cataloguing system of barley gene nomenclature.

Barley is an intermediate or near nonhost to many cereal rust pathogens that infect grasses, making it a highly suitable model to understand the evolution and genetic basis of nonhost resistance (NHR) in plants. To characterize the genetic architecture of NHR in barley, we used the Oregon Wolfe Barley doubled haploid and Morex × SusPtrit recombinant inbred line mapping populations. To elicit a wide array of NHR responses, we tested 492 barley accessions and both mapping populations with pathogenically diverse cereal rust isolates representing distinct formae speciales adapted to Avena, Hordeum, Triticum, and Lolium spp.: P. coronata f. sp. avenae (oat crown rust pathogen) and P. coronata f. sp. lolii (ryegrass crown rust pathogen), P. graminis f. sp. avenae (oat stem rust pathogen) and P. graminis f. sp. lolii (the ryegrass stem rust pathogen), and P. striiformis f. sp. tritici (wheat stripe rust pathogen) and P. striiformis f. sp. pseudo-hordei (barley grass stripe rust pathogen). With the exception of P. coronata f. sp. lolii and P. coronata f. sp. avenae, susceptibility and segregation for NHR was observed in the barley accessions and both mapping populations. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for NHR were mapped on all seven chromosomes. NHR in barley to the heterologous rusts tested was attributable to a combination of QTLs with either or both overlapping and distinct specificities. Across both mapping populations, broadly effective NHR loci were also identified that likely play a role in host specialization.

BACKGROUND: Sinus P-wave abnormalities have been associated stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (AF). The majority of AF-related strokes occur from left atrial appendage (LAA) thromboembolism. Dysfunction of the left atrium (LA) and left atrial appendage (LAA) can increase rates of thromboembolic stroke. We studied whether abnormal P wave terminal force in V1 (aPTFV1) is associated with decreased LAA ejection velocity (LAAV) on transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study reviewing patients at a tertiary care medical center who underwent TEE in sinus rhythm and had an interpretable sinus ECG within 12 months of TEE. Participants were excluded for complex congenital heart disease, age <18, cardiac transplantation, and chronic atrial pacing. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratios of LAAV<40 cm/s for aPTFV1. RESULTS: In our final cohort of 169 patients (28% of which had LAAV <40), the multivariate odds ratio of aPTFV1 for LAAV<40 cm/s after adjustment for CHA2DS2VASc variables, heart rate during TEE, history of atrial arrhythmias, and left atrial volume index was 2.24 (95% CI of 1.13-6.00). CONCLUSION: Abnromal P-wave terminal force in lead V1 is associated with low LAAV after adjustment for potential confounders. Future research is needed for validation of our findings and determination of clinical utility.

RESUMEN

Improving resistance to barley leaf rust (caused by Puccinia hordei) is an important breeding objective in most barley growing regions worldwide. The development and subsequent utilization of high-throughput PCR-based codominant molecular markers remains an effective approach to select genotypes with multiple effective resistance genes, permitting efficient gene deployment and stewardship. The genes Rph20 and Rph24 confer widely effective adult plant resistance (APR) to leaf rust, are common in European and Australian barley germplasm (often in combination), and act interactively to confer high levels of resistance. Here we report on the development and validation of codominant insertion-deletion (indel) based PCR markers that are highly predictive for the resistance alleles Rph20.ai and Rph24.an (both referred to as Rph20 and Rph24).

BACKGROUND: To identify whether compliance with Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Society recommendations is associated with length of stay (LOS) in a New Zealand hospital for patients undergoing segmental colectomy in mixed acute and elective general surgery wards. METHODS: Consecutive elective colorectal surgeries (n = 770) between October 2012 and February 2019 were audited. Patients with non-segmental colectomies, multi-organ surgeries, LOS > 14 days, and those who died were excluded. Logistic regression was used to determine the relationship between patient demographics, compliance with ERAS guidelines, and suboptimal LOS (> 4 days). RESULTS: Analysis included 376 patients. Age, surgery prior to 2014, surgical approach, non-colorectal surgical team, operation type, and complications were significantly associated with suboptimal LOS. Non-compliance with ERAS recommendations for laparoscopy [OR 8.9, 95% CI (4.52, 19.67)], removal of indwelling catheters (IDC) [OR 3.14, 95% CI (1.85, 5.51)], use of abdominal drains [OR 4.27, 95% CI (0.99, 18.35)], and removal of PCA [OR 8.71, 95% CI (1.78, 157.27)], were associated with suboptimal LOS (univariable analysis). Multivariable analysis showed that age, surgical team, late removal of IDC, and open approach were independent predictors of suboptimal LOS. CONCLUSIONS: Non-compliance with ERAS guidelines for laparoscopic approach and early removal of IDC was higher among procedures performed by non-colorectal surgery teams, and was also associated with adverse postoperative events and suboptimal LOS. This study demonstrates the importance of the surgical team's expertise in affecting surgical outcomes, and did not find significant independent associations between most individual ERAS guidelines and suboptimal LOS once adjusting for other factors.

Barley is a host to Puccinia striiformis f. sp. hordei, and is an intermediate or near nonhost to the formae speciales adapted to wheat (P. striiformis f. sp. tritici) and to barley grass (P. striiformis f. sp. pseudo-hordei). The genetic basis of resistance to these forms of P. striiformis is not well understood. Accordingly, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population was developed using a P. striiformis-susceptible accession (Biosaline-19) and the immune cultivar Pompadour. We investigated the genetic basis of resistance to four diverse P. striiformis isolates (P. striiformis f. sp. pseudo-hordei, and P. striiformis f. sp. tritici pathotypes 104 E137 A-, 134 E16 A+, and 64 E0 A-). and determined that the immunity in Pompadour at the seedling stage to the different P. striiformis isolates was due to quantitative trait loci (QTL) on chromosomes 1H, 3H, 5H, and 7H with both overlapping and distinct specificities. Further histological analysis confirmed the presence of isolate specificity. The RILs were also assessed in the field for resistance to P. striiformis f. sp. pseudo-hordei, P. striiformis f. sp. hordei, and the leaf rust pathogen (P. hordei) to identify pleiotropic QTL loci effective at the adult plant stage and determine whether the leaf rust resistance in Pompadour (Rph20) was also effective to P. striiformis. RILs that were seedling susceptible to P. striiformis f. sp. pseudo-hordei were resistant in the field, implicating the involvement of adult plant resistance (APR). Additional QTLs were identified on chromosome 7H at the same genetic position as Rph23 (APR to leaf rust), suggesting either pleiotropic resistance or the presence of a stripe rust resistance gene closely linked to or allelic with Rph23. Unlike many pleiotropic APR genes identified and isolated in wheat, our data suggest that the Rph20 locus does not confer resistance to the P. striiformis isolates used in this study (P. striiformis f. sp. hordei [χ2 (independence) = 2.47 P > 0.12] and P. striiformis f. sp. pseudo-hordei [χ2 (independence) = 0.42 P > 0.60]).

KEY MESSAGE: Genome-wide association studies of barley breeding populations identified candidate minor genes for pairing with the adult plant resistance gene Rph20 to provide stable leaf rust resistance across environments. Stable resistance to barley leaf rust (BLR, caused by Puccinia hordei) was evaluated across environments in barley breeding populations (BPs). To identify genomic regions that can be combined with Rph20 to improve adult plant resistance (APR), two BPs genotyped with the Diversity Arrays Technology genotyping-by-sequencing platform (DArT-seq) were examined for reaction to BLR at both seedling and adult growth stages in Australian environments. An integrated consensus map comprising both first- and second-generation DArT platforms was used to integrate QTL information across two additional BPs, providing a total of four interrelated BPs and 15 phenotypic data sets. This enabled identification of key loci underpinning BLR resistance. The APR gene Rph20 was the only active resistance region consistently detected across BPs. Of the QTL identified, RphQ27 on chromosome 6HL was considered the best candidate for pairing with Rph20. RphQ27 did not align or share proximity with known genes and was detected in three of the four BPs. The combination of RphQ27 and Rph20 was of low frequency in the breeding material; however, strong resistance responses were observed for the lines carrying this pairing. This suggests that the candidate minor gene RphQ27 can interact additively with Rph20 to provide stable resistance to BLR across diverse environments.

BACKGROUND: We analysed data from the Paediatric Difficult Intubation Registry examining the use of direct laryngoscopy and GlideScope® videolaryngoscopy. METHODS: Data collected by a multicentre, paediatric difficult intubation registry from 1295 patients were analysed. Rates of success and complications between direct laryngoscopy and GlideScope videolaryngoscopy were analysed. RESULTS: Initial (464/877 = 53% vs 33/828 = 4%, Z-test = 22.2, P < 0.001) and eventual (720/877 = 82% vs. 174/828 = 21%, Z-test = 25.2, P < 0.001) success rates for GlideScope were significantly higher than direct laryngoscopy. Children weighing <10 kg had lower success rates with the GlideScope than the group as a whole. There were no differences in complication rates per attempt between direct laryngoscopy and GlideScope. The direct laryngoscopy group had more complications associated with the greater number of attempts needed to intubate. There were no increased risks of hypoxia or trauma with GlideScope use. Each additional attempt at intubation with either device resulted in a two-fold increase in complications (odds ratio: 2.0, 95% confidence interval: 1.5-2.5, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: During difficult tracheal intubation in children, direct laryngoscopy is an overly used technique with a low chance of success. GlideScope use was associated with a higher chance of success with no increased risk of complications. GlideScope use in children with difficult tracheal intubation has a lower success rate than in adults with difficult tracheal intubation. Children weighing less than 10 kilograms had lower success rates with either device. Attempts should be minimized with either device to decrease complications.

The RENO experiment has analyzed about 500 live days of data to observe an energy dependent disappearance of reactor ν[over ¯]_{e} by comparing their prompt signal spectra measured in two identical near and far detectors. In the period between August of 2011 and January of 2013, the far (near) detector observed 31 541 (290 775) electron antineutrino candidate events with a background fraction of 4.9% (2.8%). The measured prompt spectra show an excess of reactor ν[over ¯]_{e} around 5 MeV relative to the prediction from a most commonly used model. A clear energy and baseline dependent disappearance of reactor ν[over ¯]_{e} is observed in the deficit of the observed number of ν[over ¯]_{e}. Based on the measured far-to-near ratio of prompt spectra, we obtain sin^{2}2θ_{13}=0.082±0.009(stat)±0.006(syst) and |Δm_{ee}^{2}|=[2.62_{-0.23}^{+0.21}(stat)_{-0.13}^{+0.12}(syst)]×10^{-3} eV^{2}.

Barley is a near-nonhost to numerous heterologous (nonadapted) rust pathogens because a small proportion of genotypes are somewhat susceptible. We assessed 66 barley accessions and three mapping populations (Vada × SusPtrit, Cebada Capa × SusPtrit, and SusPtrit × Golden Promise) for response to three Swedish oat stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. avenae) fungal isolates and determined that barley is a near-nonhost to P. graminis f. sp. avenae and that resistance was polygenically inherited. The parental genotypes Vada and Golden Promise were immune to all three isolates, whereas Cebada Capa was immune to two isolates and moderately resistant to the third. Phenotypic data from the Vada × SusPtrit mapping population and the barley accessions tested also demonstrated isolate-specific resistance. In particular, the SusPtrit parent and several other accessions allowed sporulation by isolate Ingeberga but were resistant to isolate Evertsholm. Nine chromosomal regions carried quantitative trait loci (QTL) (Rpgaq1 to Rpgaq9) of varying effect, most of which colocated to previously identified QTL for resistance to other heterologous rust pathogens. Rpgaq1 on chromosome 1H (Vada and Golden Promise) was effective toward all isolates tested. Microscopic examination indicated that resistance was prehaustorial in Vada whereas, in SusPtrit, both pre- and posthaustorial mechanisms play a role.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the anti-obesity effect of Rubi Fructus (RF) extract using brown adipose tissue (BAT) and primary brown preadipocytes in vivo and in vitro. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 J mice (n=5 per group) were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 10 weeks with or without RF. Brown preadipocytes from the interscapular BAT of mice (age, post-natal days 1-3) were cultured with differentiation media (DM) including isobutylmethylxanthine, dexamethasone, T3, indomethacin and insulin with or without RF. RESULTS: In HFD-induced obese C57BL/6 J mice, long-term RF treatment significantly reduced weight gain as well as the weights of the white adipose tissue, liver and spleen. Serum levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were also reduced in the HFD group which received RF treatment. Furthermore, RF induced thermogenic-, adipogenic- and mitochondria-related gene expressions in BAT. In primary brown adipocytes, RF effectively stimulated the expressions of thermogenic- and mitochondria-related genes. In addition, to examine whether LIPIN1, a regulator of adipocyte differentiation, is regulated by RF, Lipin1 small interfering RNA (siRNA) and RF were pretreated in primary brown adipocytes. Pretreatment with Lipin1 siRNA and RF downregulated the DM-induced expression levels of thermogenic- and mitochondria-related genes. Moreover, RF markedly upregulated AMP-activated protein kinase. Our study shows that RF is capable of stimulating the differentiation of brown adipocytes through the modulation of thermogenic genes. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that RF prevents the development of obesity in mice fed with a HFD and that it is also capable of stimulating the differentiation of brown adipocytes through the modulation of thermogenic genes, which suggests that RF has potential as a therapeutic application for the treatment or prevention of obesity.

AIMS: The associations of transferrin saturation with diabetes have not been well evaluated and conflicting results have been reported. The purpose of this study is to examine the association of iron indices (serum ferritin and transferrin saturation) with risk of impaired fasting glucose and insulin resistance. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 2413 individuals (1150 men and 1263 women) aged 20-50 years who participated in the 2010 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Participants were free of diabetes, malignancy, liver cirrhosis, chronic renal failure, anaemia, pregnancy and menopause. Fasting plasma glucose, insulin and the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were measured as the outcomes. RESULTS: Impaired fasting glucose was more prevalent in the highest compared with the lowest serum ferritin quartile among men (odds ratio [OR], 1.97; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.20-3.24) after adjustment for multiple covariates. Following the same adjustment, impaired fasting glucose was less prevalent in the highest compared with the lowest transferrin saturation quartile among men (OR, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.25-0.80) and women (OR, 0.33; 95% CI, 0.14-0.77). Moreover, a higher ferritin level was significantly associated with higher HOMA-IR after adjusting for confounders in men. Lower transferrin saturation was also significantly associated with higher insulin levels and HOMA-IR in both sexes. CONCLUSIONS: Lower transferrin saturations were associated with an increased risk of impaired fasting glucose and insulin resistance among general South Korean population.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) are medications commonly used for treating conditions such as hypertension. However, ARBs are frequently associated with hyperkalemia, a potentially critical adverse event, in high-risk patients. Although both the liver and the kidney are major elimination routes of ARBs, the relationship between hepatorenal function and ARB-related hyperkalemia has not yet been investigated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk of hyperkalemia, in terms of various hepatorenal functions, for hospitalized patients newly initiated on ARB treatment. METHODS: We evaluated ARB-related hyperkalemia in a cohort of 5530 hospitalized patients, who had not previously used ARBs, between 12 April 2004 and 31 May 2012. Hepatorenal function was assessed by the Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD) score. Hyperkalemia risk was assessed by hepatorenal function, risks were categorized into the four MELD scoring groups, and the groups were compared with one another. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The MELD score was significantly different between the hyperkalemic and non-hyperkalemic groups (independent t-test, P < 0.001). The MELD score 10-14, 15-19 and ≥ 20 groups showed higher risks of hyperkalemia than the lowest MELD score group {log-rank test, P < 0.001; multiple Cox proportional hazard model, hazard ratios 1.478 (P = 0.003), 2.285 (P < 0.001) and 3.024 (P < 0.001), respectively}. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: The MELD score showed a stronger predictive performance for hyperkalemia than either serum creatinine or estimated glomerular filtration rate alone. Furthermore, the MELD score showed good predictive performance for ARB-related hyperkalemia among hospitalized patients. The clinical implications and reasons for these findings merit future investigation.

Virtually no occupational exposure standards specify the level of risk for the prescribed exposure, and most occupational exposure limits are not based on quantitative risk assessment (QRA) at all. Wider use of QRA could improve understanding of occupational risks while increasing focus on identifying exposure concentrations conferring acceptably low levels of risk to workers. Exposure-response modeling between a defined hazard and the biological response of interest is necessary to provide a quantitative foundation for risk-based occupational exposure limits; and there has been considerable work devoted to establishing reliable methods quantifying the exposure-response relationship including methods of extrapolation below the observed responses. We review several exposure-response modeling methods available for QRA, and demonstrate their utility with simulated data sets.

KEY MESSAGE: A gene conferring seedling resistance to Puccinia triticina was mapped to chromosome 2BS in the wheat Morocco. The gene was shown to be distinct and was therefore designated Lr73. The wheat genotype Morocco, widely susceptible to isolates of Puccinia triticina, was resistant to an Australian isolate of this pathogen collected in 2004. Genetic studies established that the resistance in Morocco was also present the Australian wheat genotypes Avocet, Halberd, Harrier, Tincurrin and a selection of cultivar Warigal lacking the resistance gene Lr20. Genetic studies based on a cross with Halberd showed that the gene is dominant and located on chromosome 2BS (XwPt8760-4 cM-Lr73-1.4 cM-XwPt8235). The gene was genetically independent of the Lr13, Lr16 and Lr23 loci, also located on chromosome 2BS, indicating that it is distinct. The locus designation Lr73 was therefore assigned. On the basis of multi-pathotype tests, it is likely Lr73 is also present in the Australian wheat cultivars Clearfield STL, Federation (with Lr10), Gatcher (with Lr10 and Lr27+Lr31), Marombi (with Lr1 and Lr37), Pugsley (with Lr1 and Lr37), Spear (with Lr1), Stiletto and Tarsa (with Lr1). Gene Lr73 is unlikely to be of value in resistance breeding. However, recognising Lr73 is important to avoid its inadvertent selection in breeding programmes. Furthermore, the apparent rarity of avirulence for genes like Lr73, sometimes referred to as "fossil" resistance genes, makes them of interest in terms of the evolution of disease resistance in host plants and of virulence in the respective rust pathogens.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) frequently induce hyperkalaemia in high-risk patients. Early detection of hyperkalaemia can reduce the subsequent harmful effects. This study was performed to examine the onset time of hyperkalaemia after ARB therapy. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective analysis to determine the onset time of hyperkalaemia (serum potassium >5·5 mm) among hospitalized patients newly starting ARB therapy between 2004 and 2012, in a tertiary teaching hospital. Predefined possible risk factors and concomitant medications were evaluated. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: During the 97-month study period, a total of 4267 hospitalized patients started ARBs as new drugs and 225 patients showed hyperkalaemia. A significantly increased risk of hyperkalaemia was detected among patients with a high baseline potassium [odds ratio (OR) 6·0] and those who took non-potassium-sparing diuretics (OR 2·2) or potassium supplements (OR 1·6). A high glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was associated with a lower risk of hyperkalaemia (OR 0·992). Fifty-two percentage of hyperkalaemic events occurred within the first week after initiation of ARB therapy. The highest frequency of hyperkalaemia occurred on the first day after initiation of ARBs. Hyperkalaemia occurred earlier in patients with a high baseline serum potassium level, reduced GFR, diabetes and in those without heart failure. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: Hyperkalaemia occurs most frequently at the beginning of ARB therapy in hospitalized patients. Monitoring of serum potassium and estimated GFR after initiation of ARBs should be started within a few days or not later than 1 week, especially in patients with risk factors.
