The evaporation rate and corresponding vapor pressure of dicarboxylic acids have been the subject of numerous scientific studies over the years, with reported values spanning several orders of magnitude. Recent work has identified the importance of considering the phase state of the material during evaporation, likely accounting for some of the variability in measured vapor pressures. In the homologous series of dicarboxylic acids, the phase state under dry conditions may be crystalline or amorphous, with particles of odd-carbon-numbered acids exhibiting tendencies to remain amorphous and spherical. Although measurements of vapor pressures for pure components make up most of the available literature data, for many applications, these compounds are not present in isolation. Additionally, many systems containing a semi-volatile material exist in a solid state, especially under dry and low relative humidity conditions. In this work, we explore the evaporation of compounds present in mixed solid-state particles. Specifically, we use single particle levitation coupled with mass spectrometry to measure the evolving composition of solid particles containing mixtures of glutaric acid and succinic acid, glutaric acid and adipic acid, and malonic acid and succinic acid. Under dry conditions, these systems exhibit non-spherical geometries consistent with crystallization of one or both components into an organic crystal. Our measurements allow the evaporation of each component in the mixture to be characterized independently and effective vapor pressures of the pure components to be inferred. The resulting vapor pressures are compared against pure component vapor pressures. We demonstrate that these mixtures exhibit thermodynamic ideality but can be influenced by limited diffusion in the solid phase. These are the first results in the literature that explore the thermodynamic and kinetic factors that control the evaporative evolution of mixed solid-state particles.

Mango (Mangifera indica) has been recognized as a rich source of bioactive compounds with potential pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications and has attracted increasing interest from research. Phytochemistry studies have demonstrated that phenolic compounds are one of the most important biologically active components of M. indica extracts. Ultrasound- and microwave-assisted extractions and supercritical fluids have been employed to obtain bioactive molecules, such as phenolic acids, terpenoids, carotenoids, and fatty acids. These phytochemicals exhibit antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activity, and depending on the source (bark, leaves, seeds, flowers, or peel) and extraction method there will be differences in the structure and bioactivity. This review examines the bioactive compounds, extraction techniques, and biological function of different parts of M. indica of great importance as nutraceuticals and functional compounds with potential application as therapeutic agents and functional foods. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Current treatments for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) are partially effective. It is, therefore, necessary to find new strategies that can complement the existing ones. In this scenario, transcutaneous vagal stimulation (TVS) neurophysiological effects could be a helpful solution. However, there is no evidence of the efficacy of TVS in KOA. This trial aims to assess the efficacy of TVS in decreasing pain in participants aged 55 years or older with KOA. A randomised controlled, two-arm, double-blind (participants and outcome assessors) and clinical superiority trial will be conducted for 70 patients with KOA. All the participants will carry out an exercise program. It consists of 12 sessions over four weeks. In addition, they will be randomly assigned to (1) active TVS plus physical exercise or (2) sham TVS plus physical exercise. The application of active TVS consists of electronic stimulation of the auricular concha using a portable device. Sham TVS condition consists of the stimulation of the earlobe that does not cause neurophysiological effects. The primary outcome is the reduction in pain intensity. Additionally, functional capacity, physical performance, pain-related interference, pain-related distress, quality of life in older adults and global change will be measured. Assessments will be conducted at the beginning of the study (baseline), at the end of the intervention and after 1 and 3 months of follow-up. This trial will generate evidence regarding the efficacy of TVS in pain perception in individuals with KOA. This information will serve as an input in the clinical decision-making on the use or non-use of TVS in individuals with KOA. Thus, if the efficacy of TVS is confirmed, a new therapeutic tool may be included in the rehabilitation of individuals with KOA.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to detect potential animal reservoirs of Escherichia coli carrying the mcr-1 gene in an Ecuadorian household. METHODS: The mobile colistin-resistance gene, mcr-1, was first detected in Ecuador in a commensal E. coli isolate from a boy. A cross-sectional study was performed to detect the possible source of colistin-resistant E. coli in the boy's household. Faecal swabs and soil faecal samples were collected from companion animals. Samples were plated on selective media to isolate colistin-resistant E. coli and isolates were submitted to PCR detection of mcr-1, pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and multi-locus sequences typing (MLST). Moreover, the genomes of all the isolates were sequenced. RESULTS: Three different colistin-resistant E. coli sequence types (ST3941, 1630 and 2170), corresponding to three PFGE patterns, were obtained from a chicken and two dogs; these isolates were different from the human isolate (ST609). By whole-genome sequencing, the mcr-1.1 gene was found on IncI2 plasmids with very high nucleotide identity. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate a polyclonal dissemination of mcr-1.1 in the environment surrounding the first MCR-producing E. coli strain reported in Ecuador. Our findings support the idea of lateral dissemination of mcr-1.1 gene between unrelated E. coli isolates.
