Peroxisomes and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) are intimately linked subcellular organelles, physically connected at membrane contact sites. While collaborating in lipid metabolism, for example, of very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) and plasmalogens, the ER also plays a role in peroxisome biogenesis. Recent work identified tethering complexes on the ER and peroxisome membranes that connect the organelles. These include membrane contacts formed via interactions between the ER protein VAPB (vesicle-associated membrane protein-associated protein B) and the peroxisomal proteins ACBD4 and ACBD5 (acyl-coenzyme A-binding domain protein). Loss of ACBD5 has been shown to cause a significant reduction in peroxisome-ER contacts and accumulation of VLCFAs. However, the role of ACBD4 and the relative contribution these two proteins make to contact site formation and recruitment of VLCFAs to peroxisomes remain unclear. Here, we address these questions using a combination of molecular cell biology, biochemical, and lipidomics analyses following loss of ACBD4 or ACBD5 in HEK293 cells. We show that the tethering function of ACBD5 is not absolutely required for efficient peroxisomal ß-oxidation of VLCFAs. We demonstrate that loss of ACBD4 does not reduce peroxisome-ER connections or result in the accumulation of VLCFAs. Instead, the loss of ACBD4 resulted in an increase in the rate of ß-oxidation of VLCFAs. Finally, we observe an interaction between ACBD5 and ACBD4, independent of VAPB binding. Overall, our findings suggest that ACBD5 may act as a primary tether and VLCFA recruitment factor, whereas ACBD4 may have regulatory functions in peroxisomal lipid metabolism at the peroxisome-ER interface.

BACKGROUND: Oestrogen deficiency increases bone resorption, contributing to osteoporosis development. Yet, the mechanisms mediating the effects of oestrogen on osteoclasts remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the early metabolic alteration induced by RANKL, the essential cytokine in osteoclastogenesis and 17-beta-oestradiol (E2) on osteoclast progenitor cells, using RAW 264.7 macrophage cell line and primary bone marrow-derived macrophages as biological models. RESULTS: This research demonstrated that, in osteoclast precursors, RANKL stimulates complex I activity, oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and mitochondria-derived ATP production as early as 3 h of exposure. This effect on mitochondrial bioenergetics is associated with an increased capacity to oxidize TCA cycle substrates, fatty acids and amino acids. E2 inhibited all effects of RANKL on mitochondria metabolism. In the presence of RANKL, E2 also decreased cell number and stimulated the mitochondrial-mediated apoptotic pathway, detected as early as 3 h. Further, the pro-apoptotic effects of E2 during osteoclast differentiation were associated with an accumulation of p392S-p53 in mitochondria. CONCLUSIONS: These findings elucidate the early effects of RANKL on osteoclast progenitor metabolism and suggest novel p53-mediated mechanisms that contribute to postmenopausal osteoporosis.

AIM: Patients with a lymphoma diagnosis undergo non-gated chest computed tomography (CT) scans as part of cancer diagnosis or staging. Although coronary artery calcification (CAC) is traditionally evaluated on dedicated cardiac CT, CAC can also be detected on standard chest CT. This exploratory study aimed to determine the prognostic value of CAC detected on non-gated chest CT and to report its use on clinical practice. METHOD: Consecutive patients with a lymphoma diagnosis who performed non-contrasted non-gated chest CT for cancer diagnosis or staging were included and retrospectively evaluated. Coronary artery calcification was evaluated by quantitative (Agatston score) and qualitative (visual) assessment. RESULTS: Fifty-seven patients were included in this study (mean age 61±15 years; 58% male). Coronary artery calcification was identified in 22 patients (39%), most of them with multi-vessel involvement. Coronary artery calcification was qualitatively classified as mild, moderate and severe in 11%, 19% and 9% patients, respectively. This study suggested that moderate or severe CAC was an independent predictor of all-cause mortality (odds ratio 3, 95% confidence interval 2-11; p=0.04) after adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors and lymphoma staging. Regarding quantitative evaluation, a higher CAC score was also associated with higher mortality. While significant CAC was identified in 22 patients, it was only reported in four patients. CONCLUSIONS: The preliminary findings of this hypothesis-generating study support the investigation of CAC identified by chest CT for diagnosis/staging of cancer as a risk modifier in the global risk assessment of patients with lymphoma. The unrecognition and underreporting of this finding may represent a wasted opportunity to detect subclinical coronary atherosclerosis in these patients and may help in guiding preventive cardiology care.

BACKGROUND: Visual assessment of the percentage diameter stenosis (%DSVE ) of lesions is essential in coronary angiography (CAG) interpretation. We have previously developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model capable of accurate CAG segmentation. We aim to compare operators' %DSVE in angiography versus AI-segmented images. METHODS: Quantitative coronary analysis (QCA) %DS (%DSQCA ) was previously performed in our published validation dataset. Operators were asked to estimate %DSVE of lesions in angiography versus AI-segmented images in separate sessions and differences were assessed using angiography %DSQCA as reference. RESULTS: A total of 123 lesions were included. %DSVE was significantly higher in both the angiography (77% ± 20% vs. 56% ± 13%, p < 0.001) and segmentation groups (59% ± 20% vs. 56% ± 13%, p < 0.001), with a much smaller absolute %DS difference in the latter. For lesions with %DSQCA of 50%-70% (60% ± 5%), an even higher discrepancy was found (angiography: 83% ± 13% vs. 60% ± 5%, p < 0.001; segmentation: 63% ± 15% vs. 60% ± 5%, p < 0.001). Similar, less pronounced, findings were observed for %DSQCA < 50% lesions, but not %DSQCA > 70% lesions. Agreement between %DSQCA /%DSVE across %DSQCA strata (<50%, 50%-70%, >70%) was approximately twice in the segmentation group (60.4% vs. 30.1%; p < 0.001). %DSVE inter-operator differences were smaller with segmentation. CONCLUSION: %DSVE was much less discrepant with segmentation versus angiography. Overestimation of %DSQCA < 70% lesions with angiography was especially common. Segmentation may reduce %DSVE overestimation and thus unwarranted revascularization.

From the biological point of view, bacterial biofilms are communities of bacteria embedded in a self-produced gel matrix composed of polysaccharides, DNA, and proteins. Considering the biophysical point of view, the biofilm matrix is a highly dense, crowded medium that imposes constraints to solute diffusion, depending on the size, conformational dynamics, and net charge. From the pharmacological point of view, biofilms are additional difficulties to drug development as heterogeneity in oxygen and nutrient distribution, and consequently, heterogeneity in bacterial metabolic status leads to recalcitrance. For peptide scientists, biofilms are both a challenge and an opportunity. Biofilms can be intruded by peptides, revealing important biological, biophysical, and pharmacological insights. Peptides can be engineered for different sizes, flexibilities, and net charges, unravelling the determinants of diffusion; they kill bacteria by lysis, overcoming the hurdles of metabolic status heterogeneity, and they are able to kill bacteria in the biofilm core, leaving the matrix intact, that is, without causing bacterial biofilm dispersion as side effect. This concise review addresses the knowledge reached while interrogating bacterial biofilms with peptides and other reporter molecules, and the advances therefrom in biology, biophysics, and drug development.

Since the last decade, carbon nanomaterials have had a notable impact on different fields such as bioimaging, drug delivery, artificial tissue engineering, and biosensors. This is due to their good compatibility toward a wide range of chemical to biological molecules, low toxicity, and tunable properties. Especially for biosensor technology, the characteristic features of each dimensionality of carbon-based materials may influence the performance and viability of their use. Surface area, porous network, hybridization, functionalization, synthesis route, the combination of dimensionalities, purity levels, and the mechanisms underlying carbon nanomaterial interactions influence their applications in bioanalytical chemistry. Efforts are being made to fully understand how nanomaterials can influence biological interactions, to develop commercially viable biosensors, and to gain knowledge on the biomolecular processes associated with carbon. Here, we present a comprehensive review highlighting the characteristic features of the dimensionality of carbon-based materials in biosensing.

INTRODUCTION: Spirometry and peak expiratory flow measurement (PEF) are combined during functional respiratory assessments. The new digital peak flow meter (DPM) evaluates the forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) and PEF. OBJECTIVE: To compare lung function measurements using spirometry and DPM. METHODS: This cross-sectional analytical study assessed FEV1 and PEF in children with and without asthma. Statistical analysis was performed to assess the agreement between the measures using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), Bland-Altman, and survival agreement plot. RESULTS: 125 (3-12 y) and 196 (6-18 y) children without and with asthma, respectively, were studied. In children without asthma, the ICC for FEV1 and PEF were 0.89 and 0.86, respectively, while the corresponding values were 0.87 and 0.79, respectively, in patients with asthma. The Bland-Altman method showed a difference of -0.4 to 0.5 for FEV1 in patients without asthma, with a tendency to increase as the FEV1 increased to a certain extent. In patients with asthma, the pattern was similar for FEV1, and the PEF had a greater dispersion than among those without asthma; however, a good agreement pattern was maintained. In the survival agreement plot, when accepting a tolerance of 0.150 mL for FEV1, there was an agreement of close to 55% in both groups. Likewise, when accepting a tolerance of 0.5 L/s for PEF, an agreement of close to 60% and 50% was observed in patients without and with asthma, respectively. CONCLUSION: DPM was effective as a measure of lung function in pediatric patients with and without asthma.

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease that can be asymptomatic, but it can progress and cause serious damage, such as hospitalization and death. This work aimed to characterize and carry out the in vivo pharmacological test of the dry extract of Morinda citrifolia and obtain a pharmaceutical dosage form based on this extract for the treatment of schistosomiasis. The aqueous extract was characterized based on the evaluation of pH, dry residue and density. The aqueous extract was dried through the freeze-drying process. The obtained dry extract was characterized through phytochemical screening, rheological analysis, acute toxicity and in vivo pharmacology. Additionally, the pre-formulation development of a pharmaceutical dosage form was pursued with the dry extract. Through the HPLC chromatogram, characteristic rutin peaks were identified. The rheological behavior of the dry extract did not show good characteristics. Acute toxicity, at a dose of 2000 mg/kg, showed excitatory activity in the central and autonomous nervous system. The in vivo pharmacological test of the dry extract showed that, at a dose of 400 mg/kg, it was possible to reduce 67.5% of the total adult worms, 66% of female worms and 60% of the number of eggs. The pharmaceutical dosage form obtained was an oral solution that was clear, transparent, without the presence of lumps and precipitates, having a density of 1.1276 g mL-1 and pH of 5.92. The results obtained will provide parameters for the production of suitable pharmaceutical formulations, as well as for the quality control of products based on M. citrifolia, with promising schistosomicidal activity.

Reservoir-building on rivers is still "the Brazilian energy culture", such that many other dams are being constructed and planned, with many other rivers potentially suffering the same impact in their sediment flux. In this study, we evaluated the impacts of reservoir-building on the erosion of the São Francisco, Jequitinhonha, Doce, and Paraíba do Sul river deltas. A time series of Landsat images from 1973 to 2020 was analyzed, with three key highlighted moments (1973, 1997 and 2020) that summarize the erosion processes on these deltas. In addition to the images, continuous river water discharge, sediment discharge and basin rainfall data were analyzed between 1940 and 2020, providing river parameters over a period exceeding that of the satellite data. The findings suggest that coastal erosion has progressed in the four deltas, with higher estimated losses in the São Francisco and Paraíba do Sul over the 47 years of available satellite images. However, despite minimal overall estimated gains, the Jequitinhonha and Doce experienced high erosion at their river mouths, as in the other two rivers, compensated by accretion in distal coastal areas. These results can be explained by reductions in river flux and consequent sediment transport capacity due to reservoirs.

In this work, an in silico study and evaluation of the cytotoxicity of 4-(4-chlorophenyl)thiazole compounds against mouse splenocytes and the chloroquine-sensitive Plasmodium falciparum 3D7 strain are reported. The in silico results showed that the compounds have important pharmacokinetic properties for compounds with potential drug candidates. Regarding cytotoxicity assays against splenocytes, the compounds have low cytotoxicity. In addition, they were able to promote activation of these cells by increasing nitric oxide production without promoting cell death. Finally, they were able to promote cell proliferation. Regarding the in vitro anti-P. falciparum activity assays, it was observed that the compounds were able to inhibit the parasite's growth, presenting IC50 values ​​ranging from 0.79 to greater than 10 µM. These results are promising when compared to chloroquine. Therefore, this study showed that 4-(4-chlorophenyl)thiazole compounds are promising candidates for antimalarials.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery calcium (CAC) evaluated on dedicated cardiac computed tomography (CT) is an independent predictor of cardiovascular events. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between CAC detected on non-gated standard chest CT and coronary lesions on coronary angiography (CAG) and determine its impact on prognosis. METHODS: Consecutive patients who underwent CAG due to acute coronary syndrome and had prior non-contrasted non-gated chest CT were included and retrospectively evaluated. Coronary artery calcium was evaluated by quantitative (Agatston score) and qualitative (visual assessment) assessment. RESULTS: A total of 114 patients were included in this study. The mean time difference between chest CT and CAG was 23 months. Coronary artery calcium was visually classified as mild, moderate, and severe in 31%, 33%, and 16% of patients, respectively. Moderate or severe CAC was an independent predictor of significant lesions on CAG (OR 22; 95% CI 8-61; p<0.001) and all-cause mortality (OR 4; 95% CI 2-9; p=0.001). Quantitative CAC evaluation accurately predicted significant lesions on CAG (AUC 0.81; p<0.001). While significant CAC was identified in 80% of chest CTs, formal reporting was 25%. CONCLUSION: Coronary artery calcium evaluation with chest CT was feasible and strongly associated with severity of coronary disease on CAG and mortality. Although the identification of CAC on chest CT represents a unique opportunity for cardiovascular risk stratification for preventive care, CAC underreporting is frequent.

Cell viability and metabolic activity are ubiquitous parameters used in biochemistry, molecular biology, and biotechnological studies. Virtually all toxicology and pharmacological projects include at some point the evaluation of cell viability and/or metabolic activity. Among the methods used to address cell metabolic activity, resazurin reduction is probably the most common. At variance with resazurin, resorufin is intrinsically fluorescent, which simplifies its detection. Resazurin conversion to resorufin in the presence of cells is used as a reporter of metabolic activity of cells and can be detected by a simple fluorometric assay. UV-Vis absorbance is an alternative technique but is not as sensitive. In contrast to its wide empirical "black box" use, the chemical and cell biology fundamentals of the resazurin assay are underexplored. Resorufin is further converted to other species, which jeopardizes the linearity of the assays, and the interference of extracellular processes has to be accounted for when quantitative bioassays are aimed at. In this work, we revisit the fundamentals of metabolic activity assays based on the reduction of resazurin. Deviation to linearity both in calibration and kinetics, as well as the existence of competing reactions for resazurin and resorufin and their impact on the outcome of the assay, are addressed. In brief, fluorometric ratio assays using low resazurin concentrations obtained from data collected at short time intervals are proposed to ensure reliable conclusions.

Essential oils (EOs) are a class of natural products that exhibit potent antimicrobial properties against a broad spectrum of bacteria. Inhibition diameters (IDs) and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) are the typical measures of antimicrobial activity for extracts and EOs obtained from Cinnamomum, Salvia, and Mentha species. This study used a meta-analytical regression analysis to investigate the correlation between ID and MIC measurements and the variability in antimicrobial susceptibility tests. By utilizing pooled ID models, this study revealed significant differences in foodborne pathogens' susceptibility to extracts, which were dependent on both the plant species and the methodology employed (p < .05). Cassia showed the highest efficacy against Salmonella spp., exhibiting a pooled ID of 26.24 mm, while cinnamon demonstrated the highest efficacy against Bacillus cereus, with a pooled ID of 23.35 mm. Mint extract showed the greatest efficacy against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Interestingly, cinnamon extract demonstrated the lowest effect against Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, with a pooled ID of only 8.07 mm, whereas its EOs were the most effective against this bacterial strain. The study found that plant species influenced the MIC, while the methodology did not affect MIC measurements (p > .05). An inverse correlation between ID and MIC measurements was identified (p < .0001). These findings suggest that extracts and EOs obtained from Cinnamomum, Salvia, and Mentha spp. have the potential to inhibit bacterial growth. The study highlights the importance of considering various factors that may influence ID and MIC measurements when assessing the effectiveness of antimicrobial agents.

RATIONALE: Propolis has a great diversity in its composition due to numerous factors; therefore, each study is an important contribution to the knoFwledge of its composition and biological action. The objective of this study was to determine the chemical profile and biological activity of propolis produced by Scaptotrigona depilis. METHODS: Extracts with 70% ethanol (EPE70) and with cereal alcohol (CAPE) were elaborated, and then characterized using UHPLC-ESI(+)-MS/MS. Volatile compounds were extracted and then characterized using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In addition, antimicrobial activities were verified against resistant strains. RESULTS: The volatile compounds of propolis predominantly consist of sesquiterpenes. Using the exploratory metabolomic approach, compounds of different classes were putatively identified in the ethanolic extracts, of which the most representative were terpenes, and some of the sesquiterpenes identified among the volatiles were also detected. The extracts were shown to be active against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.5 and 1.0 mg mL-1 , respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The molecular network approach proved to be determining the chemical profile of S. depilis propolis rapidly and accurately, and led to the identification of lipophilic compounds. The identification of compounds using GC-MS and UHPLC-ESI(+)-MS/MS is complementary and useful for the characterization of propolis.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is identified by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the Substantia Nigra pars compacta (SNpc), and is correlated to aggregates of proteins such as α-synuclein, Lewy's bodies. Although the PD etiology remains poorly understood, evidence suggests a main role of oxidative stress on this process. Lippia grata Schauer, known as "alecrim-do-mato", "alecrim-de-vaqueiro", "alecrim-da-chapada", is a native bush from tropical areas mainly distributed throughout the Central and South America. This plant species is commonly used in traditional medicine for relief of pain and inflammation conditions, and that has proven antioxidant effects. We evaluated the effects of essential oil of the L. grata after its complexed with ß-cyclodextrin (LIP) on PD animal model induced by reserpine (RES). Behavioral assessments were performed across the treatment. Upon completion the treatment, the animals were euthanized, afterwards their brains were isolated and processed for immunohistochemical and oxidative stress analysis. The LIP treatment delayed the onset of the behavior of catalepsy, decreased the number of oral movements and prevented the memory impairment on the novel object recognition task. In addition, the treatment with LIP protected against dopaminergic depletion in the SNpc and dorsal striatum (STRd), and decreased the α-syn immunoreactivity in the SNpc and hippocampus (HIP). Moreover, there was reduction of the oxidative stability index. These findings demonstrated that the LIP treatment has neuroprotective effect in a progressive parkinsonism model, suggesting that LIP could be an important source for novel treatment approaches in PD.

Neuroprotection in glaucoma using epoetin beta (EPOß) has yielded promising results. Our team has developed chitosan-hyaluronic acid nanoparticles (CS/HA) designed to carry EPOß into the ocular globe, improving the drug's mucoadhesion and retention time on the ocular surface to increase its bioavailability. In the present in vivo study, we explored the possibility of delivering EPOß to the eye through subconjunctival administration of chitosan-hyaluronic acid-EPOß (CS/HA-EPOß) nanoparticles. Healthy Wistar Hannover rats (n = 21) were split into 7 groups and underwent complete ophthalmological examinations, including electroretinography and microhematocrit evaluations before and after the subconjunctival administrations. CS/HA-EPOß nanoparticles were administered to the right eye (OD), and the contralateral eye (OS) served as control. At selected timepoints, animals from each group (n = 3) were euthanized, and both eyes were enucleated for histological evaluation (immunofluorescence and HE). No adverse ocular signs, no changes in the microhematocrits (≈45%), and no deviations in the electroretinographies in both photopic and scotopic exams were observed after the administrations (p < 0.05). Intraocular pressure remained in the physiological range during the assays (11-22 mmHg). EPOß was detected in the retina by immunofluorescence 12 h after the subconjunctival administration and remained detectable until day 21. We concluded that CS/HA nanoparticles could efficiently deliver EPOß into the retina, and this alternative was considered biologically safe. This nanoformulation could be a promising tool for treating retinopathies, namely optic nerve degeneration associated with glaucoma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hypertension represents the most important cardiovascular risk factor, affecting over 4.06 billion adults worldwide. In this review, we will discuss potential barriers and their solutions to improve prevention, detection, and management of hypertension. RECENT FINDINGS: The prevalence of hypertension has been increasing in low- and middle-income countries, requiring new strategies to improve its recognition and proper management. The World Heart Federation (WHF) developed a roadmap for hypertension, advising health system policies and clinical practices as part of its commitment to improving global cardiovascular health. The World Health Organization (WHO) has published in 2021 practical guidelines for the pharmacological treatment of hypertension in adults. Identifying potential roadblocks and solutions deserves high priority to improve the detection, management, and control of hypertension.

The complexity of mandibular dynamics encourages constant research as a vehicle to improve oral health. The gold standard motion capture system might help us to understand its functioning and its relation to body position, aiming to perform an exhaustive bibliographic review in the Dentistry field. Six different electronic databases were used (Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source, Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, CINAHL and SPORTDiscus) in April 2022. The selection criteria includes a biography, critical analysis, and the full text from 1984 to April 2022, based on the odontological gold standard, whether or not in combination with additional devices. Clinical cases, bibliographic reviews or meta-analysis and grey literature were excluded. The checklist of the critical assessment methodology by Joanna Brigs was used (JBI). After choosing scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals, 23 out of 186 investigations were classified as eligible with a total of 384 participants. The issue being addressed is related to the speech properties, posture and body movement in relation to dento-oro-facial muscle and facial analysis, mandibular kinematics and mandibular dynamics during the mastication process. The markers arrangement depends on the dynamic to be analysed. From a physiologic and pathologic perspective, the applications of the optic system are relevant in Dentistry. The scarcity of literature obtained implies the need for future research.

J Strength Cond Res 36(2): 455-460, 2022-The aim of this study was to identify the existence of bilateral deficit (BD) on maximal handgrip strength during standing and seated positions in judo athletes and to correlate this with judo-specific tasks. Nineteen male judo athletes (age 22.1 ± 4.6 years) performed unilateral and bilateral handgrip strength tests in seated and standing postures to calculate bilateral index (BI). Athletes then performed the Judogi Grip Strength Test (dynamic and isometric modes) and Special Judo Fitness Test. The comparisons between bilateral and unilateral handgrip strength for each position, weight categories, or training experience (novice <10 years and advanced >10 years) were made by paired and unpaired t-tests. The sum of bilateral forces was significantly lower than unilateral forces at standing (unilateral: 105 ± 20 vs. bilateral: 102 ± 21 kgf, BI: -3.0 ± 5.9%, p = 0.043), but not at seated position (unilateral: 100 ± 19 vs. bilateral: 98 ± 19 kgf, BI: -2.1 ± 7.3%, p = 0.230), indicating BD only at standing position. Pearson coefficient correlations were not significant between judo tests and BI, with similar performance in judo tests between athletes with BD and bilateral facilitation (p > 0.05). Significant BD was observed at standing position in advanced (-4.5 ± 7.1%, p = 0.049) but not in novice athletes (-0.9 ± 3.8%, p = 0.592). We concluded that BI in maximal handgrip strength test was not related with judo-specific tests. However, the BD occurred only at standing position, suggesting that postural stability may contribute for this phenomenon.

Tapirs are endangered terrestrial mammals that inhabit several continents. They have anatomical similarities to horses, sharing a common ancestral lineage. This article reports the case of a 14-yr-old female lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris) presented for intermittent lameness due to upward fixation of the patella causing extension of the limb in the caudal phase of the stride. Medial patellar desmotomy was performed under general anesthesia, correcting the problem. To date there are no reports of this condition or treatment recommendations in tapirs. An anatomical study including stifle dissection, advanced MRI, and CT was performed in a separate lowland tapir. According to the clinical case and the anatomical findings in the other lowland tapir, upward fixation of the patella may occur in the tapir, although the anatomy varies slightly from that of the horse. Because the lowland tapir does not have parapatellar cartilage or as large of a medial patellar ligament or medial trochlea of the distal femur compared to the horse, more severe disease secondary to complete or persistent upward fixation of the patella may not occur in tapirs. Rather, mild forms of the disease associated with intermittent upward fixation of the patella or delayed patellar release appear more likely in the tapir.
