BACKGROUND: There is a considerable diagnostic delay in the diagnosis 'benign acquired subglottic stenosis in adults' (SGS, diagnosed by the reference standard, i.e. laryngo- or bronchoscopy). Patients are frequently misdiagnosed since symptoms of this rare disease may mimic symptoms of 'asthma.' The 'Expiratory Disproportion Index' (EDI) obtained by spirometry, may be a simple instrument to detect an SGS-patient. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the EDI in differentiating SGS patients from asthma patients. METHODS: We calculated the EDI from spirometry results of all SGS-patients in the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), who had not received treatment 2 years before their spirometry examination. We compared these EDI results with the EDI results of all true asthma patients between 2011 and 2019, who underwent a bronchoscopy (exclusion of SGS by laryngo- or bronchoscopy). RESULTS: Fifty patients with SGS and 32 true asthma patients were included. Median and IQR ranges of the EDI for SGS and asthma patients were 67.10 (54.33-79.18) and 37.94 (32.41-44.63), respectively. Area under the curve (ROC) of the accuracy of the EDI at discriminating SGS and asthma patients was 0.92 (95% CI = 0.86-0.98). The best cut-off point for the EDI was > 48 (i.e. possible upper airway obstruction), with a sensitivity of 88.0%% (95%CI = 77.2-95.0%%) and specificity of 84.4% (95%CI = 69.4-94.1%). CONCLUSIONS: The EDI has a good diagnostic accuracy discriminating subglottic stenosis patients from asthma patients, when compared to the reference standard. This measurement from spirometry may potentially shorten the diagnostic delay of SGS patients. Further studies are needed to evaluate clinical reproducibility.

INTRODUCTION: To update the European guidelines for the assessment of voice quality (VQ) in clinical practice. METHODS: Nineteen laryngologists-phoniatricians of the European Laryngological Society (ELS) and the Union of the European Phoniatricians (UEP) participated to a modified Delphi process to propose statements about subjective and objective VQ assessments. Two anonymized voting rounds determined a consensus statement to be acceptable when 80% of experts agreed with a rating of at least 3/4. The statements with ≥ 3/4 score by 60-80% of experts were improved and resubmitted to voting until they were validated or rejected. RESULTS: Of the 90 initial statements, 51 were validated after two voting rounds. A multidimensional set of minimal VQ evaluations was proposed and included: baseline VQ anamnesis (e.g., allergy, medical and surgical history, medication, addiction, singing practice, job, and posture), videolaryngostroboscopy (mucosal wave symmetry, amplitude, morphology, and movements), patient-reported VQ assessment (30- or 10-voice handicap index), perception (Grade, Roughness, Breathiness, Asthenia, and Strain), aerodynamics (maximum phonation time), acoustics (Mean F0, Jitter, Shimmer, and noise-to-harmonic ratio), and clinical instruments associated with voice comorbidities (reflux symptom score, reflux sign assessment, eating-assessment tool-10, and dysphagia handicap index). For perception, aerodynamics and acoustics, experts provided guidelines for the methods of measurement. Some additional VQ evaluations are proposed for voice professionals or patients with some laryngeal diseases. CONCLUSION: The ELS-UEP consensus for VQ assessment provides clinical statements for the baseline and pre- to post-treatment evaluations of VQ and to improve collaborative research by adopting common and validated VQ evaluation approach.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate short- and long-term outcome of injection augmentation with autologous adipose tissue (AAT) and calcium hydroxylapatite injection (CAHA) in patients with a unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP). DESIGN/METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed in patients diagnosed with UVFP, who had received injection augmentation with AAT or CAHA. Multidimensional voice analysis was performed before, 3 and 12 months after injection. This analysis included patient self-assessment (Voice Handicap Index-30), perceptual (overall dysphonia grade according to the GRBAS scale), aerodynamic (MPT, s/z ratio) and acoustic (fundamental frequency, dynamic range) parameters. Effects were assessed using a linear mixed model analysis. RESULTS: Forty-six patients were available for evaluation, with a total of 53 injection augmentations (AAT n = 39; CAHA n = 14). We found significant improvement of patient self-assessment and perceptive voice outcome at 3 months, which were maintained at 12 months. In the CAHA group, s/z ratio and dynamic range of extreme frequencies also improved significantly over time. No statistically significant differences were found between the two treatments (AAT vs. CAHA). No major complications were reported. CONCLUSION: This study, using a guide-line recommended panel of outcome parameters, shows a high success rate of injection augmentation with AAT or CAHA for patients with UVFP at 12 months with significant improvement in most voice outcome parameters, although voices do not completely normalize. There is no significant difference in outcome between the two materials.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the short- and long-term voice outcomes after unilateral medialization thyroplasty (MT) and unilateral medialization thyroplasty with arytenoid adduction (MT + AA) in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis. METHODS: Voice outcomes were assessed preoperatively, and postoperatively at 3 and 12 months according to a standardized protocol. Voice assessment was performed using Voice Handicap Index (VHI), GRBAS Grade, Maximum Phonation Time (MPT), s/z-ratio and subjective numeric rating scales on voice quality, effort, performance and influence on life. RESULTS: Sixty-one patients were included (34 MT and 27 MT + AA). Significant pre- to postoperative improvements were seen in all voice outcome parameters. No significant differences in post-operative values were identified between the groups. CONCLUSION: Based on our findings, we conclude that patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis who undergo MT and MT + AA achieve comparable and significant long time voice improvement, although voices do not completely normalize. We also conclude that this does not mean that AA is a superfluous procedure, but can indicate the accurate identification of patients in need of the additional AA procedure based on clinical parameters.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To give an overview of the current knowledge regarding the aetiology, epidemiology, and classification of laryngeal dysplasia (LD) and to highlight the contributions of recent literature. As most cases of dysplasia occur at the glottic level and data on diagnosis and management are almost exclusively from this location, laryngeal dysplasia in this position paper is taken to be synonymous with dysplasia of the vocal folds. LD has long been recognized as a precursor lesion to laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Tobacco and alcohol consumption are the two single most important etiological factors for the development of LD. There is currently insufficient evidence to support a role of reflux. Although varying levels of human papillomavirus have been identified in LD, its causal role is still uncertain, and there are data suggesting that it may be limited. Dysplasia has a varying presentation including leukoplakia, erythroleukoplakia, mucosal reddening or thickening with exophytic, "tumor-like" alterations. About 50% of leukoplakic lesions will contain some form of dysplasia. It has become clear that the traditionally accepted molecular pathways to cancer, involving accumulated mutations in a specific order, do not apply to LD. Although the molecular nature of the progression of LD to SCC is still unclear, it can be concluded that the risk of malignant transformation does rise with increasing grade of dysplasia, but not predictably so. Consequently, grading systems are inherently troubled by the weak correlation between the degree of the dysplasia and the risk of malignant transformation. The best data on LD grading and outcomes come from the Ljubljana group, forming the basis for the World Health Organization classification published in 2017.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To give an overview of the current knowledge regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of laryngeal dysplasia (LD) and to highlight the contributions of recent literature. The diagnosis of LD largely relies on endoscopic procedures and on histopathology. Diagnostic efficiency of endoscopy may be improved using videolaryngostroboscopy (VLS) and bioendoscopic tools such as Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) or Storz Professional Image Enhancement System (SPIES). Current histological classifications are not powerful enough to clearly predict the risk to carcinoma evolution and technical issues such as sampling error, variation in epithelial thickness and inflammation hamper pathological examination. Almost all dysplasia grading systems are effective in different ways. The 2017 World Health Organization (WHO) system should prove to be an improvement as it is slightly more reproducible and easier for the non-specialist pathologist to apply. To optimize treatment decisions, surgeons should know how their pathologist grades samples and preferably audit their transformation rates locally. Whether carcinoma in situ should be used as part of such classification remains contentious and pathologists should agree with their clinicians whether they find this additional grade useful in treatment decisions. Recently, different studies have defined the possible utility of different biomarkers in risk classification. The main treatment modality for LD is represented by transoral laser microsurgery. Radiotherapy may be indicated in specific circumstances such as multiple recurrence or wide-field lesions. Medical treatment currently does not have a significant role in the management of LD. Follow-up for patients treated with LD is a fundamental part of their care and investigations may be supported by the same techniques used during diagnosis (VLS and NBI/SPIES).

PURPOSE: To provide expert opinion and consensus on salvage carbon dioxide transoral laser microsurgery (CO2 TOLMS) for recurrent laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) after (chemo)radiotherapy [(C)RT]. METHODS: Expert members of the European Laryngological Society (ELS) Cancer and Dysplasia Committee were selected to create a dedicated panel on salvage CO2 TOLMS for LSCC. A series of statements regarding the critical aspects of decision-making were drafted, circulated, and modified or excluded in accordance with the Delphi process. RESULTS: The expert panel reached full consensus on 19 statements through a total of three sequential evaluation rounds. These statements were focused on different aspects of salvage CO2 TOLMS, with particular attention on preoperative diagnostic work-up, treatment indications, postoperative management, complications, functional outcomes, and follow-up. CONCLUSION: Management of recurrent LSCC after (C)RT is challenging and is based on the need to find a balance between oncologic and functional outcomes. Salvage CO2 TOLMS is a minimally invasive approach that can be applied to selected patients with strict and careful indications. Herein, a series of statements based on an ELS expert consensus aimed at guiding the main aspects of CO2 TOLMS for LSCC in the salvage setting is presented.

PURPOSE: To evaluate voice outcome after bilateral medialization thyroplasty in patients with non-paralytic glottic insufficiency due to vocal fold atrophy with or without sulcus. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study on 29 patients undergoing bilateral medialization thyroplasty for vocal fold atrophy (14 procedures) or atrophy with sulcus (15 procedures) between October 2012 and November 2017. Voice data were collected and analyzed for the preoperative and the 3- and 12-month postoperative time point according to a standardized protocol, including Voice Handicap Index (VHI)-30 and perceptual, acoustic and aerodynamic parameters. Failure rate was based on number of revisions within 12 months and non-relevant improvement (< 10 points) in VHI-30 at 12 months. RESULTS: There was a clinically relevant (≥ 15 points) and statistically significant improvement (p < 0.0001) in the VHI-30 (preoperative: 55.8 points; postoperative at 12 months: 30.9 points). Fundamental frequency for male subjects decreased significantly from 175 to 159 Hz (p = 0.0001). The pre- and post-operative grade of dysphonia was significantly lower in patients with atrophy compared to atrophy and sulcus (mean difference 0.70, p = 0.017). CONCLUSION: Bilateral medialization thyroplasty is a valid treatment option for patients with atrophy with or without sulcus. Outcomes are comparable to other methods reported in literature. However, there is a great need for larger, prospective studies with long-term follow-up to gain more insight into the comparative voice outcomes for the different forms of surgery for patients with glottic incompetence due to atrophy with or without sulcus.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Vocal fold scar is one the most challenging benign laryngeal pathologies. The purpose of this paper is to propose a classification that will allow for a common description of this entity between laryngologists, prevent discrepancies in interpretation, allow for comparison of related studies, and offer a training tool for young laryngologists. METHODS/RESULTS: Based on the depth and laterality of scarring, we propose 4 types: type I, characterized by atrophy of lamina propria with/without affected epithelium; type II, where the epithelium, lamina propria, and muscle are affected; type III, where the scar is located on the anterior commissure; type IV, which includes extended scar formation in both anteroposterior and rostro-caudal axis with significant loss of vocal fold mass. CONCLUSION: We believe that our proposal is comprehensive and encompasses all existing iatrogenic and non-iatrogenic etiologies in a simple and concise manner. It also serves its purpose as a descriptive, comparative, and training tool.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcome of bilateral trial vocal fold injection (VFI) with hyaluronic acid in patients with vocal fold atrophy ± sulcus and to assess the predictive value of trial VFI on the outcome of durable medialization procedure. METHODS: Voice data collected according to a standardized protocol before and one month after trial VFI of 68 patients with vocal fold atrophy (30) and atrophy with sulcus (38) were analyzed. Voice Handicap Index (VHI)-30 was compared to the outcome of a durable medialization at 3 and 12 months. RESULTS: The overall VHI-30 improvement was 16.8 points (from 49.9 to 33.1), which was statistically significant and clinically relevant. 57.8% of the patients experienced enough subjective benefit after trial VFI to undergo durable medialization. Of the patients that experienced subjective benefit 62% had a clinically relevant improvement in VHI-30. There was no relevant change in other parameters and no difference between ± sulcus. After durable medialization 90-94% of the patients had VHI-30 scores similar to or better than post-trial VFI. CONCLUSION: The majority of patients experience subjective improvement after bilateral trial VFI indicating that medialization is a valid treatment option for patients with vocal fold atrophy ± sulcus. The VHI-30 only partially overlaps with patients' subjective evaluation and does not predict which patients will experience subjective improvement. It is, however, predictive for VHI-30 outcome after durable medialization. The aerodynamic and acoustic parameters showed no relevant change. Further identification of voice assessment parameters accurately reflecting the subjective experience of these patients is warranted.

PURPOSE: Longitudinal studies in laryngeal cancer can provide clinicians information about short-term and long-term functional outcomes, like quality of life (QoL) and voice outcome. This information is important when counseling patients or choosing a primary treatment modality. The present study assessed long-term (2 years) QoL and voice outcome in patients with extended T1 and limited T2 glottic carcinoma treated with transoral CO2 laser microsurgery (TLM) (unilateral type III or bilateral type II resections). METHODS: Three questionnaires were administered: the Voice Handicap Index (VHI), the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QoL questionnaire (QLQ)-C30, the EORTC QLQ-HN35. A perceptual voice evaluation at six different time points was conducted: preoperatively, and postoperatively at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years. Fluctuations over time were investigated. RESULTS: Sixty-one patients were included in the analysis. Patients reported high-level functioning and low symptom scores 2 years postoperatively. Gender significantly affected the VHI scores at 2 years (mean VHI scores: female 8.7 vs. male, 23.9; p = 0.023). The major improvement in VHI scores was observed within the first 6 months. The tumor stage (T1a, T1b, and T2) significantly impacted the grade (mean scores at 2 years: 1.0, 1.9, and 1.7; p = 0.001). These scores stabilized at 6 months. CONCLUSIONS: Patients show good long-term QoL with low symptom scores, a low voice handicap, and mild to moderate dysphonia, 2 years postoperatively. Scores stabilize at 6 months and provide a clear indication of status at 1 and 2 years.

PURPOSE: To evaluate voice outcome after bilateral vocal fold injection with autologous fat in patients with non-paralytic glottic insufficiency due to vocal fold atrophy with or without sulcus. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study from September 2012 to December 2017 including 23 patients undergoing bilateral vocal fold injection with autologous fat (24 procedures) for vocal fold atrophy (15 procedures) or atrophy with sulcus (Ford type II or III) (9 procedures). Voice data were collected and analyzed for the preoperative and the 3- and 12-month postoperative time points according to a standardized protocol, including Voice Handicap Index (VHI)-30 and perceptive, acoustic and aerodynamic parameters. Failure rate was defined as non-relevant improvement (< 10 points) in VHI-30 at 12 months and number of revisions within 12 months. RESULTS: There was a clinically relevant (≥ 15 points) and statistically significant improvement in the VHI-30 (preoperative: 49.1 points; postoperative at 12 months: 29.7 points). Change in dynamic range was also statistically significant over time (p = 0.028). There were no differences in voice parameters between patients with atrophy only and atrophy with sulcus, although grade tended to be lower in patients with atrophy only over all time points. CONCLUSION: This study shows that bilateral vocal fold injection with autologous fat is a beneficial treatment not only for patients with atrophy but also for patients with sulcus. A comparison of the results with those reported from other forms of sulcus surgery confirmed this finding. However, there is a need for further prospective studies comparing the short- and long-term effects of different techniques.

The purpose of the study was to assess the role of laser-assisted posterior cordectomy in the management of patients with bilateral vocal cord paralysis. We aimed an analysis of 132 consecutive patients treated by CO2 laser posterior cordectomy, aged 38-91, 31% tracheotomized on admission. Cordectomy was performed under microlaryngoscopy using CO2 laser (Lumenis AcuPulse 40 CO2 laser, wavelength 10.6 µm, Lumenis Ltd., Yokneam, Israel). We looked at the number of laser glottic procedures necessary to achieve decannulation in tracheotomized patients and to achieve respiratory comfort in non-tracheotomized subjects and we evaluated the two groups for differences in patient characteristics. In tracheotomized patients, we also assessed factors affecting the success of decannulation and we evaluated the impact of tracheotomy on patients' lives. Decannulation was performed in 63% of tracheotomized patients. In terms of the number of procedures, 54% (14), 19% (5), and 27% (7) tracheotomized vs. 74% (61), 24% (20), and 2% (2) non-tracheotomized subjects underwent one, two, or three procedures, respectively. In the group of tracheotomized patients who were successfully decannulated, the number of multiple laser-assisted procedures was significantly higher than in the group of non-tracheotomized subjects with respiratory comfort after treatment (p = 0.04). Advanced age (> 66 years), comorbidities (diabetes, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)), multiple thyroid surgeries, and tracheotomy below the cricoid cartilage were found to decrease the likelihood of successful decannulation. Posterior cordectomy is a simple method allowing for airway improvement and decannulation in patients with bilateral vocal cord paralysis. It is less effective in tracheotomized subjects with diabetes or GERD, older than 66 years old, after two or more thyroidectomies.

PURPOSE: To assess the impact of surgical margins status on local control in patients with primary early glottic (Tis-T2) squamous cell carcinoma after treatment with transoral CO2 laser microsurgery (TLM) and to assess the significance of additional wound bed biopsies. METHODS: Patients with Tis-T2 tumours treated with TLM type I-III resections according to the European Laryngological Society classification between 2009 and 2013 were included in retrospective analysis. Recurrence rate was determined in patients with free versus non-free specimen margins and wound biopsies. Five-year survival rates were determined using the Kaplan-Meier method. Prognostic impact of pT-category, resection margin status, tumour differentiation, wound bed biopsy status, and number of biopsies on local control (LC) were tested with the log-rank test. RESULTS: Eighty-four patients were included in the analysis. Positive margins were seen in 68 patients (81.0%). Margin status after TLM did not significantly influence LC (p = 0.489), however, additional wound bed biopsies were significantly associated with lower LC (p = 0.009). Five-year LC, disease-specific survival, overall survival and laryngeal preservation were 78.6, 78.0, 98.6 and 100%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Additional wound bed biopsies can help predict local recurrence in patients treated with TLM for early glottic carcinoma. We propose that there is enough evidence to support a wait-and-see policy in patients with positive specimen margins and negative wound bed biopsies. For patients with positive wound bed biopsies, further treatment is warranted.

Acronyms and abbreviations are frequently used in otorhinolaryngology and other medical specialties. CO2 laser-assisted transoral surgery of the pharynx, the larynx and the upper airway is a family of commonly performed surgical procedures termed transoral laser microsurgery (TLM). The abbreviation TLM can be confusing because of alternative modes of delivery. Classification and definition of the different types of procedures, performed transorally or transnasally, are proposed by the Working Committee for Nomenclature of the European Laryngological Society, emphasizing the type of laser used and the way this laser is transmitted. What is usually called TLM, would more clearly be defined as CO2 laser transoral microsurgery or CO2 TOLMS or CO2 laser transoral surgery only (with a handpiece) would be defined as CO2 TOLS. KTP transnasal flexible laser surgery would be KTP TNFLS. Transoral use of the flexible CO2 wave-guide with a handpiece would be a CO2 TOFLS. One can argue that these clarifications are not necessary and that the abbreviation TLM for transoral laser microsurgery is more than sufficient. But this is not the case. Laser surgery, office-based laser surgery and microsurgery are frequently and erroneously interchanged for one another. These classifications allow for a clear understanding of what was performed and what the results meant.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze differences in the evaluation of laryngopharyngeal neuropathy by laryngologists in the United States and Europe. METHODS: Members of the American Laryngological Association (ALA) and the European Laryngological Society (ELS) were surveyed. Questionnaires were emailed to all 179 members of the ALA and all 324 members of the ELS. RESULTS: Of the ALA members surveyed, 40 (23.3%) responded, compared to 72 members (22.2%) of the ELS group. Of the ALA respondents, 79.5% identified laryngology as their primary area of practice, whereas 56.9% of ELS respondents identified devoting more than 50% of their practice to laryngology. Of ELS laryngologists, 81.1% received training in laryngology or associated subspecialties. For diagnosing laryngopharyngeal neuropathy, the average comfort level on the Likert scale was significantly greater for ALA members than ELS members (P<.01). Furthermore, ALA laryngologists were less likely to consider laryngopharyngeal reflux as an overdiagnosed condition compared to ELS laryngologists (P<.05). CONCLUSION: Laryngologists in the United States and Europe vary significantly in their familiarity with laryngopharyngeal neuropathy. This could reflect either differences in awareness concerning this condition or a more critical perspective of European providers regarding the chronic laryngopharyngeal neuropathy (CLPN) diagnosis. As CLPN is still lacking definitive proof, the addition of European researchers could aid in validating CLPN and determining its overall effect on the chronic cough population.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the swallowing disturbances of patients with Huntington's disease; therefore, we developed the Huntington's Disease Dysphagia Scale. METHODS: The scale was developed in four stages: (1) item generation, (2) comprehension testing, (3) evaluation of reliability, (4) item reduction and validity testing. The questionnaire was presented twice to 50 Huntington's disease patients and their caregivers. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to evaluate whether the severity of swallowing difficulties increased with advancing disease. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to examine the construct validity with the Swallowing Disturbance Questionnaire. RESULTS: The final version contained 11 items with five response options and exhibited a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.728. The severity of swallowing difficulties was significantly higher in more advanced Huntington's disease. The correlation with the Swallowing Disturbance Questionnaire was 0.734. CONCLUSION: We developed a valid and reliable 11-item scale to measure the severity of dysphagia in Huntington's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate long-term voice outcome after bilateral medialisation thyroplasty in glottic insufficiency due to vocal fold atrophy with or without sulcus. METHODS: Patients after medialisation thyroplasty for vocal fold atrophy with or without sulcus were identified. Long-term post-operative subjective voice outcomes (> 1 year) using Voice Handicap Index-30, subjective ratings on voice aspects and study-specific questionnaire were compared to pre-operative and shorter-term (1 year) values. RESULTS: Thirty-six patients were identified, of which 26 were included (16 atrophy, 10 sulcus) with median follow up of 6.7 years. Mean Voice Handicap Index score at > 1 year (40.0) showed clinically relevant (≥ 15 for groups) and statistically significant improvement compared to pre-operative score (58.1) and remained stable compared to post-operative score (35.7) at one year. Ten patients (56 per cent) reported clinically relevant improvement (≥ 10) after more than five years. CONCLUSION: Long-term improvement in subjective voice outcomes is attainable in a significant proportion of patients undergoing bilateral medialisation thyroplasty for atrophy with or without sulcus.

BACKGROUND: Voice outcome after carbon dioxide transoral laser microsurgery (CO2TOLMS) for glottic cancer is of prime importance. However, a comprehensive overview according to the European Laryngological Society (ELS) classification of cordectomies is still lacking. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize data on voice outcome associated with individual types of ELS glottic cordectomy after CO2TOLMS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement. The initial search identified 936 records of which 25 publications were then included. Voice outcome data (Voice Handicap Index [VHI] version 30, grade of dysphonia [G] and maximum phonation time [MPT]) were extracted per resection type. Weighted averages were calculated. RESULTS: Data show a gradual increase in the VHI scores although they were still similar for all cordectomy types (range 14.2 to 21.5). The grade of dysphonia showed a gradual increase with increasing resection depth (range 1.0 to 1.9). There was a gradual decrease in the MPT (range 15.2 to 7.2). CONCLUSION: Voice outcome is related to cordectomy type with mild dysphonia characterizing ELS type I, II and III cordectomies, while more extended cordectomies (ELS type IV, V and VI) result in moderate dysphonia and shortness of breath during phonation. The voice handicap experienced by patients is limited even in the more extended cordectomies.
