RESUMEN

In this paper, we contemplate the dynamics of an aquatic system consisting of three interacting species, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fish. We assume that the evading risk of fish predation induces fear in zooplankton species, which affects its growth dynamics radically. On the other hand, zooplankton develop an anti-predator defense by taking temporary refuge. Interestingly, the system potentially exhibits multi-stable configurations under identical ecological conditions by allowing different bifurcation scenarios, including multiple saddle-node and transcritical bifurcations with varying levels of nutrients, strength of phytoplankton toxicity, zooplankton refuge size and the cost of fear imposed by fish population. Further, by adding Gaussian white noise, we have extended the deterministic system to its stochastic version. We find that white noise appears to regulate the survival and extinction of model species. Comprehensive numerical simulations are consistent with mathematical results prognosticated by linear analysis. Overall, our study may provide a new insight into the mechanisms of emergence and mitigation of plankton blooms.

In ecological systems, the predator-induced fear dampens the prey's birth rate; yet, it fails to extinguish their population, as they endure and survive even under significant fear-induced costs. In this study, we unveil a modified Leslie-Gower predator-prey model by incorporating the fear of predators, cooperative hunting, and predator-taxis sensitivity. We embark upon an exploration of the positivity and boundedness of solutions, unearthing ecologically viable equilibrium points and their stability conditions governed by the model parameters. Delving deeper, we unravel the scenario of transcritical, saddle-node, Hopf, Bogdanov-Takens, and generalized-Hopf bifurcations within the system's intricate dynamics. Additionally, we observe the bistable nature of the system under some parametric conditions. Further, the nonautonomous extension of our model introduces the intriguing interplay of seasonality in some crucial parameters. We establish a set of sufficient conditions that guarantee the permanence of the seasonally driven system. By conducting a numerical study on the seasonally forced model, we observe a myriad of phenomena manifesting the predator-prey dynamics. Notably, periodic solutions, higher periodic solutions, and bursting patterns emerge, alongside intriguing chaotic dynamics. Specifically, seasonal variations of the predator-taxis sensitivity and hunting cooperation can lead to the extinction of prey species and even the control of chaotic (higher periodic) solutions through the generation of a simple periodic solution. Remarkably, the seasonal forcing has the capacity to govern the chaotic behavior, leading to an exceptionally quasi-periodic arrangement in both prey and predator populations.

This paper investigates the dynamics of a tritrophic food chain model incorporating an Allee effect, sexually reproductive generalist top predators, and Holling type IV and Beddington-DeAngelis functional responses for interactions across different trophic levels. Analytically, we explore the feasible equilibria, their local stability, and various bifurcations, including Hopf, saddle-node, transcritical, and Bogdanov-Takens bifurcations. Numerical findings suggest that higher Allee intensity in prey growth leads to the inability of species coexistence, resulting in a decline in species density. Likewise, a lower reproduction rate and a higher strength of intraspecific competition among top predators also prevent the coexistence of species. Conversely, a rapid increase in the reproduction rate and a decrease in the strength of intraspecific competition among top predators enhance the densities of prey and top predators while decreasing intermediate predator density. We also reveal the presence of bistability and tristability phenomena within the system. Furthermore, we extend our autonomous model to its nonautonomous counterpart by introducing seasonally perturbed parameters. Numerical analysis of the nonautonomous model reveals that higher seasonal strength in the reproduction rate and intraspecific competition of top predators induce chaotic behavior, which is also confirmed by the maximum Lyapunov exponent. Additionally, we observe that seasonality may lead to the extinction of species from the ecosystem. Factors such as the Allee effect and growth rate of prey can cause periodicity in population densities. Understanding these trends is critical for controlling changes in population density within the ecosystem. Ecologists, environmentalists, and policymakers stand to benefit significantly from the invaluable insights garnered from this study. Specifically, our findings offer pivotal guidance for shaping future strategies aimed at safeguarding biodiversity and maintaining ecological stability amidst changing environmental conditions. By contributing to the existing body of knowledge, our study advances the field of ecological science, enhancing the comprehension of predator-prey dynamics across diverse ecological conditions.

In this paper, the impact of environmental noise on prey-predator interactions with seasonal fluctuations in water levels has been studied. Both intensity of noise and water level variations together play a significant role in the dynamics of an aquatic prey-predator system. Analytically, we have shown the existence of a positive solution and its uniqueness, the ultimate bound of the system's solutions, and the global attractivity of the solution. Moreover, parametric conditions for which model species either persist (strongly or weakly) in the system or go into extinction are derived and their biological significance is also discussed. The sufficient condition of stochastic permanence is also analyzed. To justify the analytical results, we have performed numerical simulations of both deterministic and stochastic systems and observed some significant dynamics in the considered system.

To evaluate the diagnostic performance of Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra (Ultra) for the diagnosis of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) from different types of extrapulmonary specimens in comparison with culture and composite microbiological reference standard (CRS). A total of 240 specimens were prospectively collected from presumptive EPTB patients between July 2021-January 2022 and tested by Ultra, Xpert, culture and acid-fast bacilli (AFB) smear microscopy. Out of 240 specimens, 35.8 %, 20.8 %, 11.3 %, and 7.1 % were detected as Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex by Ultra, Xpert, culture and AFB microscopy, respectively. An additional 15.0 % cases were detected by Ultra compared to Xpert MTB/RIF (Xpert) assay. A total of 28 (11.7 %) cases were identified as 'trace' category by Ultra with indeterminate rifampicin resistance result; of which 36.4 % were clinically confirmed as EPTB. Compared to culture, the sensitivity and specificity of Ultra and Xpert were 100 % and 72.3 %; 92.6 % and 88.3 %, respectively. In comparison with CRS, these were respectively: 98.9 % and 100 %; 57.5 % and 100 %. For individual category of specimens, sensitivity of Ultra was 100 % with varying specificity. We found that Ultra was highly sensitive for the rapid diagnosis of EPTB and has extensive potential over current diagnostics in high TB burden countries, but 'trace' results should be interpreted with caution.

The well-being of humans is closely linked to the well-being of species in any ecosystem, but the relationship between humans and nature has changed over time as societies have become more industrialized. In order to ensure the future of our ecosystems, we need to protect our planet's biodiversity. In this work, a prey-predator model with fear dropping prey's birth as well as death rates and nonlinear harvesting, is investigated. In addition, we consider that the consumption rate of predators, i.e., the functional response, is dependent on schooling behavior of both species. We have investigated the local stability of the equilibrium points and different types of bifurcations, such as transcritical, saddle-node, Hopf and Bogdanov-Takens (BT). We find that consumption rate of predator, fear and harvesting effort give complex dynamics in the neighbourhood of BT-points. Harvesting effort has both stabilizing and destabilizing effects. There is bistability between coexistence and predator-free equilibrium points in the system. Further, we have studied the deterministic model in fluctuating environment. Simulation results of stochastic system includes time series solutions of one simulation run and corresponding phase portraits. Notably, several simulation runs are conducted to obtain time series solutions, histograms, and stationary distributions. Our findings exhibit that during stochastic processes, model species fluctuate around some average values of the deterministic steady-state for lower environmental disturbances. However, higher values of environmental disturbances lead the species to extinction.

In this research, we delve into the dynamics of an infected predator-prey system in the presence of fear and refuge, presenting a novel inclusion of treatment for infected individuals in this type of model. Through our analytical efforts, we establish a significant reproduction number that holds a pivotal role in determining disease extinction or persistence within the system. A noteworthy threshold value for this reproduction number delineates a boundary below which the infected population cannot endure in the system. It's important to note that a range of reproduction numbers leads to both disease-free and endemic scenarios, yet the stability of these situations is contingent upon the initial population sizes. Furthermore, our investigation extends to the exploration of various types of bifurcation-namely, Backward, Saddle-node, and Hopf bifurcations. These findings unravel the intricate and diverse dynamics of the system. Of particular significance is the derivation of an optimal control policy for treatment, augmenting the practical utility of our work. The robustness of our analytical findings is fortified through meticulous verification via numerical simulations. These simulations not only bolster the credibility of our analytical results but also enhance their accessibility. Our study unveils that fear, refuge, and treatment possess individual capabilities to eradicate the disease from the system. Notably, increasing levels of fear and refuge exert a passive influence on the elimination of the infected population, whereas treatment wields an active influence-a crucial insight that bolsters the foundation of our model. Furthermore, our investigation uncovers a spectrum of system dynamics including bistability, one-period, two-period, and multi-period/chaotic behavior. These discoveries contribute to a profound enrichment of the system's dynamic landscape.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide and is caused by the single infectious agent Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Although sputum is the most common specimen for pulmonary TB detection, some other respiratory specimens, such as bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, gastric lavage (GL), and induced sputum (IS), are also collected from patients who are unable to deliver sputum. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performances of different test methods for TB diagnosis using BAL fluid specimens from sputum-scarce pulmonary TB patients. In this current study, a total of 210 BAL fluid specimens were collected and subjected to culture on Lowenstein-Jensen (L-J) medium, using an N-acetyl-L-cysteine-Sodium Hydroxide decontamination and digestion method, Xpert MTB/RIF (Xpert, Cepheid, Sunnyvale, CA, USA) assay, and acid-fast bacilli (AFB) microscopy with a Ziehl-Neelsen staining method for the detection of pulmonary TB. The sensitivity and specificity of these methods were then analyzed against the composite reference standard (CRS). Additionally, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic value of these assays. Among the 210 specimens, 39 (18.6%), 27 (12.8%), and 12 (5.7%) were found positive with Xpert assay, culture, and AFB microscopy, respectively. Considering the CRS, 42 (20%) were positive as the final diagnosis. The Xpert assay had a significantly higher sensitivity (92.9%, 95% CI: 80.5-98.5) compared to culture (64.3%, 95% CI: 48.0-78.4) and AFB microscopy (28.6%, 95% CI: 15.7-44.6) against the CRS. Additionally, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) for the Xpert assay, culture, and AFB microscopy accounted for 0.964, 0.821, and 0.655, respectively, when using CRS as the reference. In conclusion, our study findings demonstrated that the Xpert assay conferred a considerable diagnostic potential compared to other conventional methods for the diagnosis of pulmonary TB from BAL fluid specimens.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric fistula, which develops after a prolonged or obstructed labour, is preventable and treatable. However, many women are still afflicted with the condition and remain untreated in low-income and middle-income countries. Concerns have also been raised that an increasing trend of caesarean sections is increasing the risk and share of iatrogenic obstetric fistula in these countries. The true prevalence of this condition is not known, which makes it difficult for health planners and policy makers to develop appropriate national health strategies to address the problem. The estimation of obstetric fistula with surveys is difficult because self-reporting of incontinence symptoms is subject to misclassification bias. In this study, we aimed to estimate the prevalence and burden of obstetric fistula in Bangladesh. METHODS: For a valid estimation addressing misclassification bias, we implemented the study in two steps. First, we did the Maternal Morbidity Validation Study (MMVS) among a population of 65 740 women in Sylhet, Bangladesh, to assess the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive values (PPVs), and negative predictive values of the survey questions. This was done through confirmation of the diagnosis with clinical examinations of suspected cases by female physicians; a sample of women who screened positive for pelvic organ prolapse and other urinary incontinence symptoms were also examined and used as controls for clinical diagnosis confirmation. Second, we used the estimated diagnostic test values, after correcting for verification bias, to adjust the reported prevalence in the nationally representative Bangladesh Maternal Mortality and Health Care Survey 2016 for the unbiased estimation of obstetric fistula prevalence in Bangladesh. FINDINGS: The MMVS, done from Aug 3 to Dec 9, 2016, identified 67 potential cases of obstetric fistula; of them, 57 (85%) women completed the clinical examination, and 19 were confirmed as obstetric fistula cases. The adjusted sensitivity of the self-reports of obstetric fistula was 100% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 99·8-100) and the observed specificity was 99·9% (95% UI 99·9-100) among women aged 15-49 years. However, the PPV was low, at 31·6% (95% UI 19·2-46·2), suggesting that almost two thirds of the self-reported cases were not true obstetric fistula cases. We estimated an adjusted obstetric fistula prevalence rate of 38 (90% UI 25-58) per 100 000 women aged 15-49 years in Bangladesh. Nationally, we estimated about 13 376 (90% UI 8686-20 112) women of reproductive age living with obstetric fistula. Additionally, we estimated 4081 (1773-8790) women aged 50-64 years to be living with obstetric fistula in Bangladesh; overall, we estimated that there are 17 457 (10 459-28 902) women aged 15-64 years in Bangladesh with obstetric fistula. INTERPRETATION: The burden of obstetric fistula is still high in Bangladesh. Prevention and provision of surgical treatment to so many women will need coordinated efforts, planning, allocation of resources, and training of surgeons. In this paper, we investigate the combined effects of fear, prey refuge and additional food for predator in a predator-prey system with Beddington type functional response. We observe oscillatory behaviour of the system in the absence of fear, refuge and additional food whereas the system shows stable dynamics if anyone of these three factors is introduced. After analysing the behaviour of system with fear, refuge and additional food, we find that the system destabilizes due to fear factor whereas refuge and additional food stabilize the system by killing persistent oscillations. We extend our model by considering the fact that after sensing the chemical/vocal cue, prey takes some time for assessing the predation risk. The delayed system shows chaotic dynamics through multiple stability switches for increasing values of time delay. Moreover, we see the impact of seasonal change in the level of fear on the delayed as well as non-delayed system.
