RESUMEN

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) exhibit p-type properties in air, necessitating electron doping using n-dopants (e.g., reducing agents) for the development of SWCNT-based electronic devices. Dimethylbenzimidazole (DMBI-H) derivatives serve as effective electron dopants, not only for SWCNTs, but also for various organic semiconducting materials. However, the doping reaction is still a subject of debate. In this study, the electron-doping reactions of ortho-methoxy-substituted DMBI-H for SWCNTs were analyzed in protic and aprotic solvents in the presence and absence of dioxygen (O2). The presence of O2 was found to cause the reduction of O2 on the SWCNT surface in the protic solvent, resulting in the production of DMBI cations and water through proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) from the n-doped SWCNT and ethanol. This work elucidates the mechanism behind the air-stability of n-type SWCNTs.

AIM: To differentiate between infectious and non-infectious diseases occurring in immunocompromised patients without acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) using high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: HRCT images of 555 patients with chest complications were reviewed retrospectively. Infectious diseases (n=341) included bacterial pneumonia (n=123), fungal infection (n=80), septic emboli (n=11), tuberculosis (n=15), pneumocystis pneumonia (n=101), and cytomegalovirus pneumonia (n=11), while non-infectious diseases (n=214) included drug toxicity (n=84), infiltration of underlying diseases (n=83), idiopathic pneumonia syndrome (n=34), diffuse alveolar haemorrhage (n=8), and pulmonary oedema (n=5). Lung parenchymal abnormalities were compared between the two groups using the χ2 test and multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The χ2 test results showed significant differences in many HRCT findings between the two groups. Multiple logistic regression analysis results indicated the presence of nodules with a halo and the absence of interlobular septal (ILS) thickening were the significant indicators that could differentiate infectious from non-infectious diseases. ILS thickening was generally less frequent among most infectious diseases and more frequent among most non-infectious diseases, with a good odds ratio (7.887, p<0.001). The sensitivity and accuracy for infectious diseases in the absence of ILS thickening were better (70% and 73%, respectively) than those of nodules with a halo (19% and 48%, respectively), while the specificity in the nodules with a halo was better (93%) than that of ILS thickening (78%). CONCLUSIONS: The presence of nodules with a halo or the absence of ILS thickening tends to suggest infectious disease. Specifically, ILS thickening seems to be a more reliable indicator.

Genebanks provide access to diverse materials for crop improvement. To utilize and evaluate them effectively, core collections, such as the World Rice Core Collection (WRC) in the Genebank at the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization, have been developed. Because the WRC consists of 69 accessions with a high degree of genetic diversity, it has been used for >300 projects. To allow deeper investigation of existing WRC data and to further promote research using Genebank rice accessions, we performed whole-genome resequencing of these 69 accessions, examining their sequence variation by mapping against the Oryza sativa ssp. japonica Nipponbare genome. We obtained a total of 2,805,329 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 357,639 insertion-deletions. Based on the principal component analysis and population structure analysis of these data, the WRC can be classified into three major groups. We applied TASUKE, a multiple genome browser to visualize the different WRC genome sequences, and classified haplotype groups of genes affecting seed characteristics and heading date. TASUKE thus provides access to WRC genotypes as a tool for reverse genetics. We examined the suitability of the compact WRC population for genome-wide association studies (GWASs). Heading date, affected by a large number of quantitative trait loci (QTLs), was not associated with known genes, but several seed-related phenotypes were associated with known genes. Thus, for QTLs of strong effect, the compact WRC performed well in GWAS. This information enables us to understand genetic diversity in 37,000 rice accessions maintained in the Genebank and to find genes associated with different phenotypes. The sequence data have been deposited in DNA Data Bank of Japan Sequence Read Archive (DRA) (Supplementary Table S1).

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that radiotherapy success has an immune-associated component. The immunogenomic profiles associated with responses to chemoradiotherapy (CRT) were assessed in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer in this study. METHODS: CD8+ tumour-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) and stromal lymphocyte densities were assessed by immunohistochemistry using pretreatment biopsies from patients with advanced rectal cancer who had preoperative CRT. Whole-exome sequencing and gene expression microarray analysis were conducted to investigate the genomic properties associated with the response to CRT and CD8+ TIL density. Response to CRT was determined based on Dworak tumour regression grade (TRG); tumours with complete (TRG 4) or near-complete (TRG 3) regression were grouped as good responders, and those with TRG 1 as non-responders. RESULTS: Immunohistochemical examinations (275 patients) showed that pre-CRT CD8+ TIL density was associated with better response to CRT and improved recurrence-free survival, whereas pre-CRT stromal CD8+ cell density was not associated with either response to CRT or recurrence-free survival. Whole-exome sequencing (74 patients) showed that the numbers of single-nucleotide variations (SNVs) and neoantigens predicted from SNVs were higher in good responders than in non-responders, and these correlated positively with CD8+ TIL density (rS = 0·315 and rS = 0·334 respectively). Gene expression microarray (90 patients) showed that CD8A expression correlated positively with the expression of programmed cell death 1 (PDCD1) (rS = 0·264) and lymphocyte-activation gene 3 (LAG3) (rS = 0·507). CONCLUSION: Pre-CRT neoantigen-specific CD8+ T cell priming may be a key event in CRT responses where immune checkpoint molecules could be useful targets to enhance tumour regression.


ANTECEDENTES: Las evidencias existentes sugieren que el éxito de la radioterapia tiene un componente asociado con el sistema inmunitario. En este estudio se evaluaron los perfiles inmunogenómicos asociados con la respuesta a la quimiorradioterapia (chemoradiotherapy, CRT) en pacientes con cáncer de recto localmente avanzado. MÉTODOS: Las densidades de los linfocitos infiltrantes de tumor CD8+ (tumour-infiltrating lymphocyte, TIL) y de los linfocitos del estroma se evaluaron por inmunohistoquímicas en las biopsias antes del tratamiento de pacientes con cáncer de recto localmente avanzado que recibieron CRT preoperatoria. Se realizó secuenciación de todo el exoma, así como microarrays de expresión génica, para investigar las propiedades genómicas asociadas con la respuesta a la CRT y a la densidad de los TIL CD8+. La respuesta a la CRT se determinó según el grado de regresión del tumor de Dworak (tumour regression grade, TRG), agrupándose como buenos respondedores los casos de regresión tumoral completa (TRG4) o casi completa (TRG3) y como no respondedores, los casos de grado TRG1. RESULTADOS: Los exámenes inmunohistoquímicos (n = 275) mostraron que la densidad pre-CRT de TIL CD8+ se asoció con una mejor respuesta a la CRT y una mejor supervivencia libre de recidiva, aunque la densidad de células CD8+ del estroma previa a la CRT no se asoció con la respuesta a la CRT ni con la supervivencia libre de recidiva. La secuenciación de todo el exoma (n = 74) mostró que el número de variaciones de nucleótidos únicos (single nucleotide variations, SNVs) y los neoantígenos predichos a partir de los SNVs fueron mayores en los que respondieron bien que en los que no respondieron, y éstos se correlacionaron positivamente con la densidad de los TIL CD8+ (Spearman r = 0,315 y r = 0,334 respectivamente). Los microarrays de expresión génica (n = 90) mostraron que la expresión CD8A se correlacionó positivamente con la expresión del ligando de muerte programada-1 (r = 0,264) y con el antígeno linfocitario del gen 3 (r = 0,507). CONCLUSIÓN: La activación de células T CD8+ específicas para neoantígenos previa a la CRT puede ser un evento clave en la respuesta a la misma donde las moléculas del punto de control inmunitario podrían ser dianas útiles para intensificar la regresión del tumor.

BACKGROUND: A survival benefit of extensive intraoperative peritoneal lavage (EIPL) has been reported in patients with gastric cancer with positive peritoneal cytology. The hypothesis of this study was that EIPL may reduce peritoneal recurrence in patients with advanced gastric cancer who undergo surgery with curative intent. METHODS: This was an open-label, multi-institutional, randomized, phase 3 trial to assess the effects of EIPL versus standard treatment after curative gastrectomy for resectable gastric cancer of T3 status or above. The primary endpoint was disease-free survival (DFS); secondary endpoints were overall survival, peritoneal recurrence-free survival and incidence of adverse events. RESULTS: Between July 2011 and January 2014, 314 patients were enrolled from 15 institutions and 295 patients were analysed (145 and 150 in the EIPL and no-EIPL groups respectively). The 3-year DFS rate was 63·9 (95 per cent c.i. 55·5 to 71·2) per cent in the EIPL group and 59·7 (51·3 to 67·1) per cent in the control group (hazard ratio (HR) 0·81, 95 per cent c.i. 0·57 to 1·16; P = 0·249). The 3-year overall survival rate was 75·0 (67·1 to 81·3) per cent in the EIPL group and 73·7 (65·9 to 80·1) per cent in the control group (HR 0·91, 0·60 to 1·37; P = 0·634). Peritoneal recurrence-free survival was not significantly different between the two groups (HR 0·92, 0·62 to 1·36; P = 0·676). No intraoperative complications related to EIPL were observed. CONCLUSION: EIPL did not improve survival or peritoneal recurrence in patients who underwent gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer. ANTECEDENTES: Se ha descrito que un lavado peritoneal extenso intraoperatorio (extensive intraoperative peritoneal lavage, EIPL) proporciona un beneficio en la supervivencia en pacientes con cáncer gástrico con citología peritoneal positiva. La hipótesis de este estudio era que el EIPL podría disminuir la recidiva peritoneal en pacientes con cáncer gástrico avanzado sometidos a cirugía con intención curativa. MÉTODOS: Ensayo clínico fase 3, abierto, multicéntrico y aleatorizado para evaluar los efectos de un lavado peritoneal extenso intraoperatorio (EIPL) frente a tratamiento estándar tras gastrectomía curativa por cáncer gástrico ≥T3 resecable. La variable de resultado primaria fue la supervivencia libre de enfermedad (disease-free survival, DFS), y las variables de resultado secundarias fueron la supervivencia global (overall survival, OS), la supervivencia libre de recidiva peritoneal y la incidencia de efectos adversos. RESULTADOS: Entre julio de 2011 y enero de 2014, se reclutaron 314 pacientes de 15 instituciones y se analizaron los datos de 295 pacientes (145 en el grupo con EIPL y 150 en el grupo sin EIPL). La DFS a los 3 años fue 63,9% (i.c. del 95% 55,5-71,2) en el grupo con EIPL y 59,7% (i.c. del 95% 51,3-67,1) en el grupo control (cociente de riesgos instantáneos, hazard ratio, HR 0,81 (i.c. del 95% 0,57-1,16), P = 0,249). La OS a los 3 años fue 75,0% (i.c. del 95% 67,1-81,3) en el grupo con EIPL y 73,7% (i.c. del 95% 65,9-80,1) en el grupo control (HR 0,91 i.c. del 95% 0,60-1,37), P = 0,634). No se observaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre los dos grupos en la supervivencia libre de recidiva peritoneal (P = 0,676, HR 0,92 (i.c. del 95% 0,62-1,36). No se observaron complicaciones intraoperatorias relacionadas con EIPL. CONCLUSIÓN: El EIPL no mejoró la supervivencia o la recidiva peritoneal en pacientes sometidos a gastrectomía por cáncer gástrico avanzado.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate possible differences in treatment responses between two categories for the onset of lupus nephritis. METHODS: We performed a multicentre, retrospective cohort study of class III-V lupus nephritis patients diagnosed between 1997 and 2014. The renal responses to initial induction therapy were compared between patients who developed lupus nephritis within one year from diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (early (E-) LN) and the remainder (delayed (D-) LN) using the Kaplan-Meier method. We determined the predictors of renal response as well as renal flares and long-term renal outcomes using multivariate Cox regression analyses. RESULTS: A total of 107 E-LN and 70 D-LN patients were followed up for a median of 10.2 years. Log-rank tests showed a lower cumulative incidence of complete response in D-LN compared with E-LN patients. Multivariate analysis identified D-LN (hazard ratio (HR) 0.48, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.33-0.70), nephrotic syndrome at baseline, and a chronicity index greater than 2 as negative predictors of complete response. D-LN patients were more likely to experience renal flares. D-LN (HR 2.54, 95% CI 1.10-5.83) and decreased renal function were significant predictors of chronic kidney disease at baseline. CONCLUSION: D-LN was a predictor of poorer treatment outcomes, in addition to renal histology and severity of nephritis at lupus nephritis onset.

AIM: To identify characteristic high-resolution computed tomography (CT) findings for individual collagen vascular disease (CVD)-related interstitial pneumonias (IPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The HRCT findings of 187 patients with CVD, including 55 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 50 with systemic sclerosis (SSc), 46 with polymyositis/dermatomyositis (PM/DM), 15 with mixed connective tissue disease, 11 with primary Sjögren's syndrome, and 10 with systemic lupus erythematosus, were evaluated. Lung parenchymal abnormalities were compared among CVDs using χ2 test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and multiple logistic regression analysis. A CT-pathology correlation was performed in 23 patients. RESULTS: In RA-IP, honeycombing was identified as the significant indicator based on multiple logistic regression analyses. Traction bronchiectasis (81.8%) was further identified as the most frequent finding based on χ2 test. In SSc IP, lymph node enlargement and oesophageal dilatation were identified as the indicators based on multiple logistic regression analyses, and ground-glass opacity (GGO) was the most extensive based on Kruskal-Wallis test, which reflects the higher frequency of the pathological nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) pattern present in the CT-pathology correlation. In PM/DM IP, airspace consolidation and the absence of honeycombing were identified as the indicators based on multiple logistic regression analyses, and predominance of consolidation over GGO (32.6%) and predominant subpleural distribution of GGO/consolidation (41.3%) were further identified as the most frequent findings based on χ2 test, which reflects the higher frequency of the pathological NSIP and/or the organising pneumonia patterns present in the CT-pathology correlation. CONCLUSION: Several characteristic high-resolution CT findings with utility for estimating underlying CVD were identified.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) imaging has facilitated liver resection with excision of hepatic veins by estimating the liver volume of portal and hepatic venous territories. However, 3D imaging cannot be used for real-time navigation to determine the liver transection line. This study assessed the value of indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging with hepatic vein clamping for navigation during liver transection. METHODS: Consecutive patients who underwent liver resection with excision of major hepatic veins between 2012 and 2013 were evaluated using ICG fluorescence imaging after clamping veins and injecting ICG. Regional fluorescence intensity (FI) values of non-veno-occlusive regions (FINon ), veno-occlusive regions (FIVO ) and ischaemic regions (FIIS ) were calculated using luminance analysing software. RESULTS: Of the 21 patients, ten, four and seven underwent limited resection, monosegmentectomy/sectionectomy and hemihepatectomy respectively, with excision of major hepatic veins. Median veno-occlusive liver volume was 80 (range 30-458) ml. Fluorescence imaging visualized veno-occlusive regions as territories with lower FI compared with non-veno-occlusive regions, and ischaemic regions as territories with no fluorescence after intravenous ICG injection. Median FIIS /FINon was lower than median FIVO /FINon (0·22 versus 0·59; P = 0·002). There were no deaths in hospital or within 30 days, and only one major complication. CONCLUSION: ICG fluorescence imaging with hepatic vein clamping visualized non-veno-occlusive, veno-occlusive and ischaemic regions. This technique may guide liver transection by intraoperative navigation, enhancing the safety and accuracy of liver resection.

In this paper, we report the development and demonstration of a method to fabricate an all-glass microfluidic cell culturing device without circulation flow. On-chip microfluidic cell culturing is an indispensable technique for cellular replacement therapies and experimental cell biology. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) have become a popular material for fabricating microfluidic cell culture devices because it is a transparent, biocompatible, deformable, easy-to-mold, and gas-permeable. However, PDMS is also a chemically and physically unstable material. For example, PDMS undergoes aging easily even in room temperature conditions. Therefore, it is difficult to control long term experimental culturing conditions. On the other hand, glass is expected to be stable not only in physically but also chemically even in the presence of organic solvents. However, cell culturing still requires substance exchanges such as gases and nutrients, and so on, which cannot be done in a closed space of a glass device without circulation flow that may influence cell behavior. Thus, we introduce a filter structure with micropores onto a glass device to improve permeability to the cell culture space. Normally, it is extremely difficult to fabricate a filter structure on a normal glass plate by using a conventional fabrication method. Here, we demonstrated a method for fabricating an all-glass microfluidic cell culturing device having filters structure. The function of this all-glass culturing device was confirmed by culturing HeLa, fibroblast and ES cells. Compared with the closed glass devices without a filter structure, the numbers of cells in our device increased and embryonic bodies (EBs) were formed. This method offers a new tool in microfluidic cell culture technology for biological analysis and it expands the field of microfluidic cell culture.

Breast FA is the most common breast tumor diagnosed in young women. Female renal transplant recipients on CsA have an increased risk of developing FA. However, reports of FA after LDLT have not been described. Our objectives were to determine the incidence of FA, analyze risk factors for FA, and evaluate treatment strategies in adolescent females after LDLT. A total of 18 female patients aged 10-19 years who underwent LDLT and survived at least one year after transplantation were enrolled in our study. The incidence of FA was 11.1%. To determine pre- or post-transplant conditions that are associated with FA after transplantation, the patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of FA: FA group (n=2) and non-FA group (n=16). There were no differences in mean age at LDLT, mean age at breast evaluation, and mean duration between transplantation and breast evaluation between the two groups. However, there was a difference in the immunosuppressive regimen between the two groups. The FA group was maintained on CsA, whereas the non-FA group was maintained on tacrolimus. CsA might be implicated in FA development in adolescent females after LDLT.

RESUMEN

We report a case of a patient with esophageal tuberculosis, a very uncommon form of extrapulrhonar tuberculosis. Initially, because of constitutional symptomatology and radiological findings of mediastinal lymph node enlargement, lymphoma was considered. However, the endoscopic findings of ulcerative masses and a sinus tract revealed by esophagram were suspicious of tuberculous origin. Diagnosis was achieved after bacterial examination of smear samples from esophageal ulcers that revealed bacillus tuberculous and histological demonstration of caseating granulomas in cervical lymph nodes. Tuberculous mediastinal lymphadenitis was thought to be source of the spread to esophagus.The patient was successfully treated with a three antituberculous drugs regimen. In spite of its rarity, even in patients without risk factors, the diagnosis would be considered in the differential diagnosis of uncertain esophageal lesions.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. OBJECTIVES: Few studies have reported a relationship between central motor conduction time (CMCT), which evaluates corticospinal function, and degree of spinal cord compression in patients with myelopathy. Thus, there is no consensus on predicting the degree of prolonged CMCT on the basis of the degree of spinal cord compression. If a correlation exists between CMCT and spinal cord compression, then spinal cord compression may be a useful noninvasive clinical indicator of corticospinal function. Therefore, this study evaluated the relationship between CMCT and cervical spinal cord compression measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). SETTING: Hiroshima University Hospital in Japan. METHODS: We studied 33 patients undergoing laminoplasty. Patients exhibited significant cervical spinal cord compression on both MRI and intraoperative electrophysiological examination. We assessed transcranial magnetic stimulation measurement of CMCT; spinal cord compression parameters such as area, lateral diameter, anteroposterior diameter and flattening of the spinal cord at the lesion site and C2/3 levels on MRI; and pre- versus postoperative Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scores. RESULTS: Correlations between CMCT and flattening as well as anteroposterior diameter of the spinal cord at the lesion level were observed. Strong correlations between CMCT and the ratio of the flattening and anteroposterior diameter parameters at the lesion level to that at the C2/3 level were also observed. CONCLUSIONS: Measurement of spinal cord compression may be useful for the evaluation of corticospinal function as a proxy for CMCT in patients with CSM.

Idiopathic pneumonia syndrome (IPS) is an acute lung dysfunction of non-infectious aetiology and a severe complication following haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Recently, the American Thoracic Society (ATS) updated the concept of IPS and extended the concept to a wider range; it defined IPS as "an idiopathic syndrome of pneumopathy after HSCT, with evidence of widespread alveolar injury and in which infectious aetiologies and cardiac dysfunction, acute renal failure, or iatrogenic fluid overload have been excluded." The ATS also categorised the presumed site of primary tissue injury into three patterns (pulmonary parenchyma, vascular endothelium, and airway epithelium), each of which has several entities. Since the therapeutic strategies for IPS are clearly different from those of infectious diseases, and therapeutic delay causes a poor prognosis, radiologists should be aware of some characteristic HRCT findings of IPS, which includes a wide spectrum of entities. In this article, the characteristic HRCT findings of these entities, including acute interstitial pneumonia/acute respiratory distress syndrome, eosinophilic pneumonia, non-cardiogenic capillary leak syndrome, diffuse alveolar haemorrhage, transfusion-related acute lung injury, organising pneumonia, and bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome, are shown.

AIM: To evaluate the high-resolution computed tomography (CT) findings of primary lung cancer with cavitation and compare the findings in adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The high-resolution CT findings of tumours with cavitation were retrospectively evaluated in 60 patients. Forty-seven of the lesions were diagnosed as adenocarcinomas; 13 were diagnosed as squamous cell carcinomas. The diameters of the tumour and cavity, the maximum thickness of the cavity wall, shape of the cavity wall, the number of cavities, and the presence of ground-glass opacity, bronchial obstruction, intratumoural bronchiectasis, emphysema, and honeycombing were evaluated. The mechanisms of cavity formation were examined according to the pathological features. RESULTS: The maximum thickness of the cavity wall was significantly greater in squamous cell carcinomas than in adenocarcinomas (p=0.002). Ground-glass opacity and intratumoural bronchiectasis were significantly more common in adenocarcinomas than in squamous cell carcinomas (p<0.001 and p=0.040, respectively). Regarding the pathological findings, intratumoural bronchiectasis with or without alveolar wall destruction contributed to a significant difference between adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (p<0.001; odds ratio [OR], 20.35; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.87-107.10). CONCLUSION: The cavity wall tends to be thicker in squamous cell carcinomas than in adenocarcinomas. The presence of ground-glass opacity and intratumoural bronchiectasis is strongly suggestive of adenocarcinoma.

This study investigated whether an intestinal epithelial culture method can be applied to mouse and human esophageal cultures. The esophagi harvested from 1-day-old mice and adult humans were maintained in collagen gels. A commercially available culture medium for human embryonic stem cells was used for the human esophageal culture. We discovered that the intestinal epithelial culture method can be successfully applied to both mouse and human esophageal cultures. The long-term cultured esophageal organoids were rod-like luminal structures lined with myofibroblasts. We discovered that regeneration of the esophageal mucosal surface can be almost completely achieved in vitro, and the advantage of this method is that organoid cultures may be generated using host-derived fibroblasts as a niche. This method is a promising tool for mouse and human research in intestinal biology, carcinogenesis, and regenerative medicine.

Far-upstream element-binding protein-interacting repressor (FIR) is a transcription factor that inhibits c-Myc expression and has been shown to have antitumor effects in some malignancies. Here, we evaluated the antitumor effects of FIR using fusion gene-deleted Sendai virus (SeV/ΔF) as a nontransmissible vector against head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Using in vitro and in vivo xenograft mouse models, we observed efficient expression of green fluorescent protein (GFP) following transduction with the SeV/ΔF vector encoding GFP (GFP-SeV/ΔF) into HNSCC cells. In vitro and in vivo studies revealed that administration of the FIR-encoded SeV/ΔF (FIR-SeV/ΔF) vector exerted significant antitumor effects, suppressed c-Myc expression and induced apoptosis in HNSCC. Additionally, the antitumor effects of FIR or the expression of GFP following administration of the FIR- or GFP-SeV/ΔF vector, respectively, were dependent on the multiplicity of infection or titer. Furthermore, the SeV/ΔF vector itself had no cytotoxic effects. Therefore, the SeV/ΔF vector may be safe and useful for the treatment of HNSCC, allowing for high-titer SeV/ΔF vector administration for anticancer gene therapy. In addition, SeV/ΔF vector-mediated FIR gene therapy demonstrated effective tumor suppression in HNSCC, suggesting that this therapy may have the potential for clinical use as a novel strategy for HNSCC treatment.

Over the past decade, networks have become a leading model to illustrate both the anatomical relationships (structural networks) and the coupling of dynamic physiology (functional networks) linking separate brain regions. The relationship between these two levels of description remains incompletely understood and an area of intense research interest. In particular, it is unclear how cortical currents relate to underlying brain structural architecture. In addition, although theory suggests that brain communication is highly frequency dependent, how structural connections influence overlying functional connectivity in different frequency bands has not been previously explored. Here we relate functional networks inferred from statistical associations between source imaging of EEG activity and underlying cortico-cortical structural brain connectivity determined by probabilistic white matter tractography. We evaluate spontaneous fluctuating cortical brain activity over a long time scale (minutes) and relate inferred functional networks to underlying structural connectivity for broadband signals, as well as in seven distinct frequency bands. We find that cortical networks derived from source EEG estimates partially reflect both direct and indirect underlying white matter connectivity in all frequency bands evaluated. In addition, we find that when structural support is absent, functional connectivity is significantly reduced for high frequency bands compared to low frequency bands. The association between cortical currents and underlying white matter connectivity highlights the obligatory interdependence of functional and structural networks in the human brain. The increased dependence on structural support for the coupling of higher frequency brain rhythms provides new evidence for how underlying anatomy directly shapes emergent brain dynamics at fast time scales.

We have demonstrated continuous wave (CW) laser operation and the first, to the best of our knowledge, sub-200 fs mode-locked laser operation of Nd(3+)-doped Ba(Zr,Mg,Ta)O(3) ceramic. Its disordered crystalline nature exhibits a broad gain bandwidth of 30 nm with a high-emission cross section. It also has higher thermal and mechanical properties than Nd:glass. In CW operation, a maximum output power of 1.5 W under 6.2 W of absorbed pump power was obtained. In mode-locked operation, a pulse duration of 196 fs with an average power of 60 mW was successfully achieved. The laser spectrum straddled both fluorescence peaks of A-site and B-site Nd(3+) ions.

Two gram-negative, aerobic, brown-pigmented, motile rod-shaped bacteria KMM 9512 and KMM 9513(T) were isolated from a sediment sample collected from the Sea of Japan seashore, Russia. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, novel strains KMM 9512 and KMM 9513(T) positioned within the genus Rheinheimera (class Gammaproteobacteria) as a separate subline adjacent to Rheinheimera baltica DSM 14885(T) sharing highest gene sequence similarities of 98.6-97.6 % to their closest phylogenetic relatives, Rheinheimera muenzenbergensis LMG 27269(T), R. baltica DSM 14885(T), Rheinheimera aquimaris JCM 14331(T), Rheinheimera nanhaiensis KACC 14030(T), and Rheinheimera pacifica KMM 1406(T). Strains KMM 9512 and KMM 9513(T) belong to the same separate genospecies on the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (99.8 %) and their DNA relatedness to each other (89 %) and to closely related Rheinheimera species (25-53 %). The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-8, polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, unknown aminolipids, unknown aminophospholipids, unknown phospholipids, and unknown lipids, and major fatty acid were C16:0, C16:1 ω7c, C17:1 ω8c, C12:0 3-OH followed by C17:0 and C18:1 ω7c in both strains. Strains KMM 9512 and KMM 9513(T) revealed a remarkable antagonistic activity toward a number of gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis, DNA-DNA hybridization results, and phenotypic differences, strains KMM 9512 and KMM 9513(T) are proposed to be classified as a novel species of the genus Rheinheimera, Rheinheimera japonica sp. nov. The type strain of this species is KMM 9513(T) = NRIC 0918(T).

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the diagnostic performance of brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity measurement using N-[(11) C]-methyl-4-piperidyl acetate (MP4A) and PET in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: Participants were 14 DLB patients, 25 AD patients and 18 age-matched healthy controls (HC). All subjects underwent PET scans and MP4A to measure regional brain AChE activity. We performed anatomical standardization of each brain image, and k3 values, an index of AChE activity, in each voxel were estimated by nonlinear least squares analysis. Volumes of interest (VOIs) were identified on parametric k3 images in frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital cortices, and in anterior and posterior cingulate gyri (ACG and PCG). In each VOI, the differential diagnostic performance between AD and DLB of k3 values was assessed by area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver-operating characteristic. Voxel-based statistical analyses were also performed. RESULTS: Mean cortical AChE activities in AD patients (-8.2% compared with normal mean) and DLB patients (-27.8%) were lower than HCs (p < 0.05, p < 0.001, respectively). There was a significant difference in mean cortical AChE activities between AD and DLB patients (p < 0.001). All regional brain AChE activities of defined VOIs except ACG were able to well discriminate DLB from AD, and notably performance was the most significant in PCG (AUC = 0.989, 95% CI: 0.965-1.000). CONCLUSIONS: Brain cholinergic deficit is consistently prominent in DLB compared with AD. PET measurement of brain AChE activity may be useful for the differential diagnosis between DLB and AD.
