RESUMEN

Weyl points-topological monopoles of quantized Berry flux-are predicted to spread to Weyl exceptional rings in the presence of non-Hermiticity. Here, we use a one-dimensional Aubry-Andre-Harper model to construct a Weyl semimetal in a three-dimensional parameter space comprising one reciprocal dimension and two synthetic dimensions. The inclusion of non-Hermiticity in the form of gain and loss produces a synthetic Weyl exceptional ring (SWER). The topology of the SWER is characterized by both its topological charge and non-Hermitian winding numbers. We experimentally observe the SWER and synthetic Fermi arc in a one-dimensional phononic crystal with the non-Hermiticity introduced by active acoustic components. Our findings pave the way for studying the high-dimensional non-Hermitian topological physics in acoustics.

RESUMEN

Hanseniaspora uvarum, a non-Saccharomyces cerevisiae species, has a crucial effect on the aroma characteristics of fruit wines, thus, attracting significant research interest in recent years. In this study, H. uvarum-Saccharomyces cerevisiae mixed fermentation was used to ferment Rosa roxburghii Tratt, blueberry fruit wine, and plum fruit wines using either a co-inoculated or a sequentially inoculated approach. The three fruit wines' volatile aroma characteristics were analyzed by headspace-solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). The results showed that the mixed inoculation of H. uvarum and S. cerevisiae reduced the alcoholic content of Kongxinli fruit wine. Moreover, H. uvarum-S. cerevisiae fermented Rosa roxburghii Tratt, blueberry, and plum fruit wines and further enriched their flavor compounds. The overall flavor characteristics of sequentially inoculated fruit wines differed significantly from those fermented with S. cerevisiae alone, although several similarities were also observed. Sequential inoculation of H. uvarum and S. cerevisiae positively affected the mellowness of the wine and achieved a better harmony of the overall wine flavors. Therefore, H. uvarum-Saccharomyces cerevisiae mixed fermentation can improve the complexity of the wines' aromatic composition and empower them with a unique identity. In particular, H. uvarum-Saccharomyces cerevisiae blueberry wine produced by mixed fermentation had the widest variety and content of aroma compounds among the fermented wines. Therefore, H. uvarum-Saccharomyces cerevisiae mixed-fermentation inoculation in the three fermented fruit wines significantly increased the aroma compound variety and content, thus, enriching their aroma richness and complexity. This study is the first comparative evaluation of the aroma characteristics of different fruit wines fermented with a mixed inoculation of H. uvarum and S. cerevisiae and provides a preliminary guide for these fruit wines produced with non-Saccharomyces yeast.

RESUMEN

Non-Hermitian systems can produce branch singularities known as exceptional points (EPs). Different from singularities in Hermitian systems, the topological properties of an EP can involve either the winding of eigenvalues that produces a discriminant number (DN) or the eigenvector holonomy that generates a Berry phase. The multiplicity of topological invariants also makes non-Hermitian topology richer than its Hermitian counterpart. Here, we study a parabola-shaped trajectory formed by EPs with both theory and acoustic experiments. By obtaining both the DNs and Berry phases through the measurement of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, we show that the EP trajectory endows the parameter space with a nontrivial fundamental group. Our findings not only shed light on exotic non-Hermitian topology but also provide a route for the experimental characterization of non-Hermitian topological invariants.

RESUMEN

Topological notions in physics often emerge from adiabatic evolution of states. It not only leads to fundamental insight of topological protection but also provides an important approach for the study of higher-dimensional topological phases. In this work, we first demonstrate the transfer of topological boundary states (TBSs) across the bulk to the opposite boundary in an acoustic waveguide system. By exploring the finite-size induced minigap between two TBS bands, we unveil the quantitative condition for the breakdown of adiabaticity in the system by demonstrating the Landau-Zener transition with both theory and experiments. Our results not only serve as a foundation of future studies of dynamic state transfer but also inspire applications leveraging nonadiabatic transitions as a new degree of freedom.

RESUMEN

Topological photonic insulators show promise for applications in compact integrated photonic circuits due to their ability to transport light robustly through sharp bendings. The number of topological edge states relies on the difference between the bulk Chern numbers across the boundary, as dictated by the bulk edge correspondence. The interference among multiple topological edge modes in topological photonics systems may allow for controllable functionalities that are particularly desirable for constructing reconfigurable photonic devices. In this work, we demonstrate magnetically controllable multimode interference based on gyromagnetic topological photonic insulators that support two unidirectional edge modes with different dispersions. We successfully achieve controllable power splitting in experiments by engineering multimode interference with the magnetic field intensity or the frequency of wave. Our work demonstrates that manipulating the interference among multiple chiral edge modes can facilitate the advancement of highly efficient and adaptable microwave devices.

RESUMEN

Traditional food packaging has problems such as nondegradable and poor food safety. Edible films play an important role in food packaging, transportation and storage, having become a focus of research due to their low cost, renewable, degradable, safe and non-toxic characteristics. According to the different materials of edible films substrate, edible films are usually categorized into proteins, polysaccharides and composite edible films. Functional properties of edible films prepared from different substrate materials also vary, single substrate edible films are defective in some aspects. Functional ingredients such as proteins, polysaccharides, essential oils, natural products, nanomaterials, emulsifiers, and so on are commonly added to edible films to improve their functional properties, extend the shelf life of foods, improve the preservation of sensory properties of foods, and make them widely used in the field of food preservation. This paper introduced the classification, characteristics, and modification methods of common edible films, discussed the interactions among the substrate ingredients of composite edible films, the influence of functional ingredients on the properties of edible films, and the effects of modified edible films on the quality of food, aiming to provide new research ideas for the wide application and further study of edible films.

RESUMEN

As the counterpart of Hermitian nodal structures, the geometry formed by exceptional points (EPs), such as exceptional lines (ELs), entails intriguing spectral topology. We report the experimental realization of order-3 exceptional lines (EL3) that are entirely embedded in order-2 exceptional surfaces (ES2) in a three-dimensional periodic synthetic momentum space. The EL3 and the concomitant ES2, together with the topology of the underlying space, prohibit the evaluation of their topology in the eigenvalue manifold by prevailing topological characterization methods. We use a winding number associated with the resultants of the Hamiltonian. This resultant winding number can be chosen to detect only the EL3 but ignores the ES2, allowing the diagnosis of the topological currents carried by the EL3, which enables the prediction of their evolution under perturbations. We further reveal the connection between the intersection multiplicity of the resultants and the winding of the resultant field around the EPs and generalize the approach for detecting and topologically characterizing higher-order EPs. Our work exemplifies the unprecedented topology of higher-order exceptional geometries and may inspire new non-Hermitian topological applications.

RESUMEN

Rosa roxburghii Tratt (RRT) has become popular owing to its high vitamin C content. Volatiles are important factors that affect the quality of RRTs and their processed products. In this study, volatile compounds were extracted using headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and solvent-assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE); 143 volatile compounds were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and RRT from different origins were well distinguished based on principal component analysis. 45 odor-active components were identified using gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O). Through quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA), there were prominent "grassy" and "tea-like" attributes in RRT. Partial least-squares regression (PLSR) revealed that Longli RRT was greatly related to "tea-like" and "woody" attributes. Among the volatiles identified, alcohols and esters were considered the dominant volatile compounds of RRT, 4-methoxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)-furanone was the most prominent compound. This study enriches the flavor chemistry theory of RRT and provides a scientific basis for optimizing the aroma of RRT and its processed products.

RESUMEN

Eigenstates of a non-Hermitian system exist on complex Riemannian manifolds, with multiple sheets connecting at branch cuts and exceptional points (EPs). These eigenstates can evolve across different sheets-a process that naturally corresponds to state permutation. Here, we report the first experimental realization of non-Abelian permutations in a three-state non-Hermitian system. Our approach relies on the stroboscopic encircling of two different exceptional arcs (EAs), which are smooth trajectories of order-2 EPs appearing from the coalescence of two adjacent states. The non-Abelian characteristics are confirmed by encircling the EAs in opposite sequences. A total of five non-trivial permutations are experimentally realized, which together comprise a non-Abelian group. Our approach provides a reliable way of investigating non-Abelian state permutations and the related exotic winding effects in non-Hermitian systems.

RESUMEN

Biochemistry experiment is an experimental module associated with biochemistry curriculum. In the context of deepening the education reform on innovation & entrepreneurship, integrating the concept of innovation & entrepreneurship with the experimental course is an effective way for the biology discipline to foster professional talents with strong engineering ability and innovation & entrepreneurship ability. Outcome-based education (OBE) is a new concept for education. Guided by this concept, we encouraged students to propose and take part in research projects, redesigned the time frame for research project-based experiment teaching, and implemented a multi-dimensional evaluation system along the entire teaching process. Furthermore, we integrated the concept of innovation & entrepreneurship for training undergraduates during the teaching process of biochemistry experiment. These measures not only boosted the students' interest in research and innovation, but also guided the teachers to participate in the entire process, which helped improving the engineering ability and innovation & entrepreneurship ability of the students.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to identify the locations and harvest months in Guizhou province, China, producing the most suitable red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) for winemaking. Fruit from Guanling, Luodian and Zhenfeng counties was harvested separately from successive fruit cycles in August, September and October, respectively. The key traits measured were fruit weight, pulp yield, soluble solids content, and titratable acid. Wine characteristics measured were alcohol content, total carbohydrates, titratable acidity, volatile acidity, and betacyanin content. The overall suitability of fruit from each location for winemaking was evaluated using a multi-factor, unweighted, scorecard. On that basis, fruit from Guanling county harvested in August was the most suitable. Fruit from Luodian, and Zhenfeng was most suitable when harvested in August and September, and September, respectively. These results provide a preliminary guide for the sourcing of red dragon fruit from Guizhou for wine production.

RESUMEN

Branch-point singularities known as exceptional points (EPs), which carry a nonzero topological charge, can emerge in non-Hermitian systems. We demonstrate with both theory and acoustic experiments an "exceptional nexus" (EX), which is not only a higher-order EP but also the cusp singularity of multiple exceptional arcs (EAs). Because the parameter space is segmented by the EAs, the EX possesses a hybrid topological invariant (HTI), which consists of distinct winding numbers associated with Berry phases accumulated by cyclic paths on different complex planes. The HTI is experimentally characterized by measuring the critical behaviors of the wave functions. Our findings constitute a major advance in the fundamental understanding of non-Hermitian systems and their topology, possibly opening new avenues for applications.

RESUMEN

Optical multiplexing is of great importance in information processing, and offers the opportunity to dramatically increase the capacity of information systems. For example, multiplexing among different physical dimensions of light is regarded as an efficient means to substantially increase the capacity of optical data storage (ODS). Alternatively, the capacity can also be increased by multilevel coding. In this paper, we report on the combination of multiplexing among multiple physical dimensions and multilevel coding simultaneously to dramatically boost the capacity of ODS. The physical mechanism relies on the excitation power dependent thermal reshaping of the ODS medium mediated by wavelength and polarization sensitive random hot spots in a volume of coupled disordered gold nanorods (GNRs). The resulting electric field intensity varies drastically inside the focus spot of a laser beam when different combinations of polarization and wavelength are used. Therefore, different hot spots can be selectively activated and encoded by controlling the power of the recording beam, facilitating the realization of the polychromatic and polarized multiplexing of multilevel coding in the disordered plasmonic structure. Our results might find applications in high capacity optical data storage, watermarking, etc.
