Adaptive Compressive Tomography with No a priori Information.

Quantum state tomography is both a crucial component in the field of quantum information and computation and a formidable task that requires an incogitable number of measurement configurations as the system dimension grows. We propose and experimentally carry out an intuitive adaptive compressive tomography scheme, inspired by the traditional compressed-sensing protocol in signal recovery, that tremendously reduces the number of configurations needed to uniquely reconstruct any given quantum state without any additional a priori assumption whatsoever (such as rank information, purity, etc.) about the state, apart from its dimension.

Evading Vacuum Noise: Wigner Projections or Husimi Samples?

The accuracy in determining the quantum state of a system depends on the type of measurement performed. Homodyne and heterodyne detection are the two main schemes in continuous-variable quantum information. The former leads to a direct reconstruction of the Wigner function of the state, whereas the latter samples its Husimi Q function. We experimentally demonstrate that heterodyne detection outperforms homodyne detection for almost all Gaussian states, the details of which depend on the squeezing strength and thermal noise.

Cold drink attenuates heat strain during work-rest cycles.

There is limited information on the ingestion of cold drinks after exercise. We investigated the thermoregulatory effects of ingesting drinks at 4°C (COLD) or 28°C (WARM) during work-rest cycles in the heat. On 2 separate occasions, 8 healthy males walked on the treadmill for 2 cycles (45 min work; 15 min rest) at 5.5 km/h with 7.5% gradient. Two aliquots of 400 mL of plain water at either 4°C or 28°C were consumed during each rest period. Rectal temperature (T re ), skin temperature (T sk ), heart rate and subjective ratings were measured. Mean decrease in T re at the end of the final work-rest cycle was greater after the ingestion of COLD drinks (0.5±0.2°C) than WARM drinks (0.3±0.2°C; P<0.05). Rate of decrease in T sk was greater after ingestion of COLD drinks during the first rest period (P<0.01). Mean heart rate was lower after ingesting COLD drinks (P<0.05). Ratings of thermal sensation were lower during the second rest phase after ingestion of COLD drinks (P<0.05). The ingestion of COLD drinks after exercise resulted in a lesser than expected reduction of T re . Nevertheless, the reduction in T re implies a potential for improved work tolerance during military and occupational settings in the heat.

True digital artery aneurysm of the ring finger: a case report.

True aneurysms of the digital artery are very rare. Only 13 cases, caused by chronic trauma from occupational or sports-related overuse, have been reported. We present the first case of a true aneurysm of the digital artery of the left ring finger caused by chronic repetitive trauma from a wedding ring. The patient was a 44-year-old teacher who presented with a 1.5-cm subcutaneous mass on the radial aspect of the proximal phalanx of the finger, just proximal to the proximal interphalangeal joint. Exploration of the mass revealed a 1-cm aneurysm continuous with the radial digital artery. The aneurysm was excised and the proximal and distal ends of the radial digital artery ligated. Microscopic examination of the excised specimen confirmed the diagnosis of a true aneurysm with the lumen filled with an organising thrombus. The patient had an uneventful recovery with good wound healing, intact sensation, and normal capillary return.
