Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) over-represent European ancestries, neglecting all other ancestry groups and low-income nations. Consequently, polygenic risk scores (PRS) more accurately predict complex traits in Europeans than African Ancestries groups. Very few studies have looked at the transferability of European-derived PRS for behavioural and mental health phenotypes to Africans. We assessed the comparative accuracy of depression PRS trained on European and African Ancestries GWAS studies to predict major depressive disorder (MDD) and related traits in African ancestry participants from the UK Biobank. UK Biobank participants were selected based on Principal component analysis clustering with an African genetic similarity reference population, MDD was assessed with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). PRS were computed using PRSice2 software using either European or African Ancestries GWAS summary statistics. PRS trained on European ancestry samples (246,363 cases) predicted case control status in Africans of the UK Biobank with similar accuracies (R2 = 2%, ß = 0.32, empirical p-value = 0.002) to PRS trained on far much smaller samples of African Ancestries participants from 23andMe, Inc. (5045 cases, R² = 1.8%, ß = 0.28, empirical p-value = 0.008). This suggests that prediction of MDD status from Africans to Africans had greater efficiency relative to discovery sample size than prediction of MDD from Europeans to Africans. Prediction of MDD status in African UK Biobank participants using GWAS findings of likely causal risk factors from European ancestries was non-significant. GWAS of MDD in European ancestries are inefficient for improving polygenic prediction in African samples; urgent MDD studies in Africa are needed.

The use of 2D materials to produce hydrogen (H2 ) fuel via photocatalytic water splitting has been intensively studied. However, the simultaneous fulfillment of the three essential requirements-high photon utilization, rapid carrier transfer, and low-barrier redox reactions-for wide-pH-range production of H2 still poses a significant challenge with no additional modulation. By employing the first-principles calculations, it has been observed that the Janus ZnXY2 structures (X = Si/Ge/Sn, Y = S/Se/Te) exhibit significantly enhanced built-in electric fields (0.20-0.36 eV Å-1 ), which address the limitations intrinsically. Compared to conventional Janus membranes, the ductile ZnSnSe2 and ZnSnTe2 monolayers have stronger regulation of electric fields, resulting in improved electron mobility and excitonic nature (Ebinding = 0.50/0.35 eV). Both monolayers exhibit lower energy barriers of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, 0.98/0.86 eV, pH = 7) and resistance to photocorrosion across pH 0-7. Furthermore, the 1% tensile strain can further boost visible light utilization and intermediate absorption. The optimal AC-type bilayer stacking configuration is conducive to enhancing electric fields for photocatalysis. Overall, Janus ZnXY2 membranes overcome the major challenges faced by conventional 2D photocatalysts via intrinsic polarization and external amelioration, enabling efficient and controllable photocatalysis without the need for doping or heterojunctions.

Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics of asthmatic children with persistent airflow limitation (PAL) in order to improve understanding of PAL and improve asthma management. Methods: The clinic data of asthmatic children aged 6 to 18 years with and without PAL, who visited the Department of Allergy at Children's Hospital of the Capital Institute of Pediatrics between January 2021 and June 2023, were analyzed retrospectively. The study included a total of 197 patients (153 males and 44 females), with a median age of 9.0 (7.0, 12.0) years. The analysis encompassed demographic features, disease-related factors, laboratory tests, and spirometry parameters. Quantitative data differences between the two groups were assessed using the Student's t-test or the Mann-Whitney U test. Qualitative data comparisons were made using the Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. Results: This study included 100 non-PAL and 97 PAL patients. The female-to-male ratio in the two groups was 27/73 and 17/80, respectively. Age and BMI were 11.0 (10.0, 13.0) years and 20.3 (17.7, 24.1) kg/m2 in the PAL group, which was significantly higher than in the non-PAL group (P<0.001). Among the PAL group, 49.5% fell within the 9-12 age group. The PAL group had a higher percentage of patients with an asthma duration of more than 3 years (89.7% vs. 62.0%, P<0.001) and a history of pneumonia (13.4% vs. 4.0%, P=0.036) compared to the non-PAL group. Regarding laboratory tests, a higher percentage of patients in the PAL group had an elevated FeNO level (60.9% vs. 37.6%, P=0.002) and animal sensitization (50.7% vs. 30.7%, P=0.022) compared to the non-PAL group. Of the 69 patients who underwent spirometry before and after PAL development, FEV1%pred, FEV1/FVC, and MMEF%pred values gradually decreased, with a significant decline in the year preceding PAL development. Conclusions: Asthmatic children with PAL had characteristics such as relatively older age, higher BMI, longer duration of asthma, eosinophilic inflammation, and atopy. Lung function decline occurred several years before PAL development. Long-term follow-up should focus on the evolving trend of spirometry parameters.

With the development of industry, heavy metal (HM) pollution of soil has become an increasingly serious problem. Using passivators made of industrial by-products to immobilize HMs in contaminated soil is a promising in-situ remediation technology. In this study, the electrolytic manganese slag (EMS) was modified into a passivator (named M-EMS) by ball milling, and the effects of M-EMS on adsorption of As(V) in aquatic samples and on immobilization of As(V) and other HMs in soil samples were investigated under different conditions. Results demonstrated that M-EMS had a maximum As(V) adsorption capacity of 65.3 mg/g in the aquatic samples. Adding M-EMS to the soil reduced the leaching of As (from 657.2 to 319.8 µg/L) and other HMs after 30 d of incubation, reduced the bioavailability of As(V) and improved the quality and microbial activity of the soil. The mechanism for M-EMS to immobilize As in the soil are complex reactions, ion exchange reaction with As and electrostatic adsorption. This work provides new ideas of using waste residue matrix composites for sustainable remediation of Arsenic in the aquatic environment and soil.

The pursuit of superhydrophilic materials with hierarchical structures has garnered significant attention across diverse application domains. In this study, we have successfully crafted Ni-Mn LDHs@CuC2O4 nanosheet arrays on a copper mesh (CM) through a synergistic process involving chemical oxidation and hydrothermal deposition. Initially, CuC2O4 nanosheets were synthesized on the copper mesh, closely followed by the growth of Ni-Mn LDHs nanosheets, culminating in the establishment of a multi-tiered surface architecture with exceptional superhydrophilicity and remarkable underwater superoleophobicity. The resultant Ni-Mn LDHs@CuC2O4 CM membrane showcased an unparalleled amalgamation of traits, including superhydrophilicity, underwater superoleophobicity, and the ability to harness photocatalytic forces for self-cleaning actions, making it an advanced oil-water separation membrane. The membrane's performance was impressive, manifesting in a remarkable water flux range (70 kL·m-2·h-1) and an efficient oil separation capability for both oil/water mixture and surfactant-stabilized emulsions (below 60 ppm). Moreover, the innate superhydrophilic characteristics of the membrane rendered it a prime candidate for deployment as a supercapacitor cathode material. Evidenced by a capacitance of 5080 mF·cm-2 at a current density of 6 mA cm-2 in a 6 M KOH electrolyte, the membrane's potential extended beyond oil-water separation. This work not only introduces a cutting-edge oil-water separation membrane and supercapacitor electrode but also offers a promising blueprint for the deliberate engineering of hierarchical structure arrays to cater to a spectrum of related applications.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize and analyze the clinical characteristics of patients diagnosed with hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG). METHODS: This was a single center retrospective observational study. All of the patients were diagnosed with HPVG. The patients were admitted to Peking University Third Hospital from January 2017 to January 2021. Demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations, laboratory tests, abdominal imaging, treatment of the primary disease, and clinical outcomes of the patients were collected via electronic medical records. The study was approved by institutional review board and the information of all the patients was kept de-identified. RESULTS: A total of seven cases were included in the study. The median age of the patients was 67 (63, 81) years. Six of the patients were male. The seven patients all presented with sudden onset of severe abdominal pain, which was the most common symptom. Six patients developed septic shock after admission. The signs of HPVG were detected by CT scans in all the patients, showing gas embolization. It might also be found as unique "aquarium sign" in abdominal ultrosonography. Four cases were caused by intestinal lesions, including acute volvulus, intestinal obstruction, and rectal abscess. Two were caused by ischemic bowel disease and the other one was caused by severe acute pancreatitis. The gas accumulation could disappear after effective anti-shock therapy and surgery (Cases 1, 2, and 6). Two patients had good postoperative outcomes, and one patient was discharged after non-surgical treatment. However, the prognosis was poor in the patients with intestinal ischemia necrosis accompanied by shock and multiple organ dysfunction (Cases 3, 4, 5, and 7 all died). CONCLUSION: The HPVG patients generally have acute abdominal pain and show up at Emergency Department. The prognosis depends on the potential cause of HPVG. The mechanism and clinical management for the appearance of gas in the portal vein is not well understood. Patients complicated with shock, ascites, and peritonitis may have intestinal necrosis, which indicates surgical intervention and higher mortality. CT is the preferred diagnostic method in standard clinical practice. Physicians need to have a comprehensive understanding of the proactive diagnostic strategy, and active treatment for the primary disease.

Objective: To assess the impact of Friday surgery on clinical outcomes in elderly patients with hip fracture under multidisciplinary treatment. Methods: A retrospective cohort study. The clinical data of 414 geriatric patients with hip fractures admitted to Zhongda Hospital Affiliated with Southeast University from January 2018 to March 2021 were analyzed retrospectively, including 126 males and 288 females with a mean age of (81.3±7.6) years. The patients were divided into two groups based on whether they underwent surgery on Friday or not. The Friday group(n=69) and the non-Friday group(n=345) were compared in terms of general information, American Society of Anesthesiologists(ASA) classification, fracture type, injury to admission time, preoperative waiting time, surgical method, anesthesia type and use of intensive care unit (ICU) fast track. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed based on age, ASA grade, time from injury to admission, preoperative waiting time, hemoglobin and albumin levels at admission. Clinical outcomes were collected and compared between the two groups, including length of hospital stay, total hospitalization cost and 30-day, 90-day and 1-year mortality rates, and postoperative complications. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify influencing factors for 1-year mortality in geriatric patients with hip fracture. Results: Baseline data showed statistically significant differences in hemoglobin, albumin and preoperative waiting time between the two groups (all P<0.05). After PSM matching, 69 patients were included in each group, and no significant differences were observed in baseline data between the two groups (all P>0.05). There was no significant differences in 30-day mortality rate (4.3% vs 0, P=0.080), 90-day mortality rate (7.2% vs 1.4%, P=0.095), length of hospital stay [(10.85±4.45)d vs (10.92±3.68)d, P=0.919], total hospitalization cost [(60.9±15.4) thousands yuan vs (59.1±15.4) thousands yuan, P=0.489], postoperative complications [pneumonia (11.6% vs 13.0%, P=0.796), cardio-cerebrovascular complications (11.6% vs 8.7%, P=0.573) and delirium (5.7% vs 2.9%, P=0.245)] between the Friday group and the non-Friday group (all P>0.05). However, the 1-year mortality rate was higher in the Friday group than that in the non-Friday group(18.8% vs 4.3%, P=0.008). Multivariate analysis revealed that surgery on Friday (OR=11.222, 95%CI: 2.198-57.291, P=0.004), low hemoglobin levels at admission (OR=0.920, 95%CI: 0.875-0.967, P=0.001), hemiarthroplasty treatment (OR=5.127, 95%CI: 1.308-20.095, P=0.019) and longer surgery duration (OR=0.958, 95%CI: 0.927-0.989, P=0.009) were influencing factors for 1-year mortality in geriatric patients with hip fracture. Conclusions: In the context of multidisciplinary treatment, Friday surgery does not increase short-term mortality, length of hospital stay, total hospitalization cost or incidence of complications in geriatric patients with hip fracture. However, it remains a influencing factor for 1-year mortality in those patients.

Objective: To explore and analyze the distribution characteristics of chord µ related parameters, as well as the pupil center's relative position to the coaxial corneal light reflex on the corneal surface, and the influencing factors in young myopia. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 761 myopic patients (761 eyes) were collected from March 2021 to December 2021 in the Refractive Surgery Center of Tianjin Eye Hospital, including 388 males and 373 females, with an average age of (24±6) years. The relationship between age, sex, diopter, anterior and posterior corneal surface parameters, and chord µ related parameters was analyzed, including the x and y absolute values of the pupil center, chord µ length, and angle. The normality of the data was tested using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and the influencing factors of chord µ were analyzed through Pearson and Spearman correlation analysis. Results: The equivalent spherical degree and chord µ length were (-5.47±1.66) D and (0.178±0.095) mm, respectively. The chord µ length followed an approximately normal distribution. The chord µ length of 266 eyes (35%) was distributed in the range of 0.120 to 0.200 mm, while the chord µ length of 479 eyes (63%) was<0.200 mm, and the chord µ length of 620 eyes (81%) was<0.260 mm. The chord µ angle distribution accounted for the largest proportion in the superior nasal quadrant (45.6%), followed by the superior temporal quadrant (34.3%), the inferior temporal quadrant (10.1%), and the inferior nasal quadrant (10.0%). High myopia (r=0.11, P=0.002) and high astigmatism (r=0.08, P=0.023) were associated with an increase in chord µ length. The higher the degree of myopia, the smaller the chord µ angle (r=-0.09, P=0.019). The larger the ISV (r=0.09, P=0.017), IVA (r=0.08, P=0.025), and IHD (r=0.08, P=0.039) on the anterior surface of the cornea, the longer the chord µ length. The higher the astigmatism of the posterior corneal surface, the greater the absolute value of the Y coordinate of the pupil center (r=0.07, P=0.044), and the longer the chord µ length (r=0.08, P=0.035), and the smaller the chord µ angle (r=-0.08, P=0.032). Conclusions: The chord µ length of young myopic individuals in China followed an approximately normal distribution, with the majority located in the superior nasal and superior temporal quadrants. High myopia, high astigmatism, and irregular corneal shape are the main factors related to an increase in chord µ length.

BACKGROUND: The phase I/II FIGHT-101 study (NCT02393248) evaluated safety, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and preliminary efficacy of pemigatinib, a potent and selective fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) 1-3 inhibitor, as monotherapy or in combination therapy, for refractory advanced malignancies, with and without fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and receptor (FGFR) gene alterations. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eligible, molecularly unselected patients with advanced malignancies were included in part 1 (dose escalation; 3 + 3 design) to determine the maximum tolerated dose. Part 2 (dose expansion) evaluated the recommended phase II dose in tumors with or where FGF/FGFR activity is relevant. RESULTS: Patients (N = 128) received pemigatinib 1-20 mg once daily intermittently (2 weeks on/1 week off; n = 70) or continuously (n = 58). No dose-limiting toxicities were reported. Doses ≥4 mg were pharmacologically active (maximum tolerated dose not reached; recommended phase II dose 13.5 mg once daily). The most common treatment-emergent adverse event (TEAE) was hyperphosphatemia (75.0%; grade ≥3, 2.3%); the most common grade ≥3 TEAE was fatigue (10.2%). Dose interruption, dose reduction, and TEAE-related treatment discontinuation occurred in 66 (51.6%), 14 (10.9%), and 13 (10.2%) patients, respectively. Overall, 12 partial responses were achieved, most commonly in cholangiocarcinoma (n = 5) as well as in a broad spectrum of tumors including head and neck, pancreatic, gallbladder, uterine, urothelial carcinoma, recurrent pilocytic astrocytoma, and non-small-cell lung cancer (each n = 1); median duration of response was 7.3 months [95% confidence interval (CI) 3.3-14.5 months]. Overall response rate was highest for patients with FGFR fusions/rearrangements [n = 5; 25.0% (95% CI 8.7% to 49.1%)], followed by those with FGFR mutations [n = 3; 23.1% (95% CI 5.0% to 53.8%)]. CONCLUSIONS: Pemigatinib was associated with a manageable safety profile and pharmacodynamic and clinical activity, with responses seen across tumors and driven by FGFR fusions/rearrangements and mutations. These results prompted a registrational study in cholangiocarcinoma and phase II/III trials in multiple tumor types demonstrating the benefit of precision therapy, even in early phase trials.

This paper is the fourth contribution in the Genera of Phytopathogenic Fungi (GOPHY) series. The series provides morphological descriptions and information about the pathology, distribution, hosts and disease symptoms, as well as DNA barcodes for the taxa covered. Moreover, 12 whole-genome sequences for the type or new species in the treated genera are provided. The fourth paper in the GOPHY series covers 19 genera of phytopathogenic fungi and their relatives, including Ascochyta, Cadophora, Celoporthe, Cercospora, Coleophoma, Cytospora, Dendrostoma, Didymella, Endothia, Heterophaeomoniella, Leptosphaerulina, Melampsora, Nigrospora, Pezicula, Phaeomoniella, Pseudocercospora, Pteridopassalora, Zymoseptoria, and one genus of oomycetes, Phytophthora. Nutrients and heavy metals (HM) in the sediment have an impact on microbial diversity and community structure. In this study, the distribution characteristics of nutrients, HM, and microbial community in the sediments along the Longsha River, a tributary of the Pearl River (or Zhu Jiang), China were investigated by analyzing samples from 11 sites. On the basis of the HM-contamination level, the 11 sampling sites were divided into three groups to explore the changes in microbial communities at different ecological risk levels. Results indicated that nutrient concentrations were higher near farmlands and residential lands, while the ecological risk of HM at the 11 sampling sites was from high to low as S10 > S2 > S9 > S6 > S11 > S7 > S5 > S8 > S3 > S4 > S1. Among these HM, Cu, Cr, and Ni had intense ecological risks. In addition, the results of Variance Partitioning Analysis (VPA) revealed a higher contribution of HM (35.93%) to microbial community variation than nutrients (12.08%) and pH (4.08%). Furthermore, the HM-tolerant microbial taxa (Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Romboutsia, norank_o__Gaiellales, and etc.) were the dominant genera, and they were more dynamic around industrial lands, while microbes involved in the C, N, and S cycles (e.g., Smithella, Thiobacillus, Dechloromonas, Bacter oidetes_vadinHA17, and Syntrophorhabdus) were inhibited by HM, while their abundance was lower near industrial lands and highway but higher around residential lands. A three-unit monitoring program of land-use types, pollutants, and microbial communities was proposed. These results provide a new perspective on the control of riparian land-use types based on contaminants and microbes, and different microbial community response patterns may provide a reference for contaminant control in sediments with intensive industrial activities.

Due to the drawbacks of using fossil fuels and the need to mitigate global warming caused by increasing greenhouse gas emissions, agricultural biomass for bioenergy production is gaining great interest around the world. This work presented a study at a biochemical plant in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, China to maximize methane production from cassava distiller wastewater. The plant's annual production of cassava distiller wastewater is more than 3 million tons and currently was treated using a series of 5000 m3 Internal Circulation (IC) reactors. Modification was applied at No.19 IC reactor by connecting it to two 1 m3 automatic biological incubators called Information Bio-Booster (IBB). The effluent of the IC reactor was fed into the IBBs and iron, cobalt and nickel were added directly in the IBBs. The function of the IBBs was to regulate the microbial community. Afterwards, the microorganisms in the IBBs were pumped back into the IC reactor to participate in the methane production reaction. Daily net increase of methane content and COD removal reached 8.02% and 33% respectively in No.19 IC reactor comparing to the unadjusted reactors. Preliminary lab experiments found that improvements of biogas production, enhanced COD removal and VS removal was closely related to the enhancement of anaerobic microbial communities' diversity and the promotion of enzyme activity through the addition of the metal salts. Daily economic value could be estimated to be $218 which indicated the application potential of using the proposed system to enhance anaerobic digestion at industrial plants for bioenergy production.

Developing an ideal and cheap adsorbent for adsorbing heavy metals from aqueous solution has been urgently need. In this study, a novel, effective and low-cost method was developed to prepare the biochar from lettuce waste with H3PO4 as an acidic activation agent at a low-temperature (circa 200 °C) hydrothermal carbonization process. A batch adsorption experiment demonstrated that the biochar reaches the adsorption equilibrium within 30 min, and the optimal adsorption capacity of Cd(II) is 195.8 mgâg-1 at solution pH 6.0, which is significantly improved from circa 20.5 mgâg-1 of the original biochar without activator. The fitting results of the prepared biochar adsorption data conform to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (PSO) and the Sips isotherm model, and the Cd(II) adsorption is a spontaneous and exothermic process. The hypothetical adsorption mechanism is mainly composed of ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, and surface complexation. This work offers a novel and low-temperature strategy to produce cheap and promising carbon-based adsorbents from organic vegetation wastes for removing heavy metals in aquatic environment efficiently.

Steinernema populi n. sp. was recovered by baiting from beneath poplar trees in China. Morphological and molecular features provided evidence for placing the new species into the Kushidai clade. The new species is characterized by the following morphological features: third-stage infective juveniles (IJ) with a body length of 1095 (973-1172) µm, a distance from the anterior end to excretory pore of 77 (70-86) µm and a tail length of 64 (55-72) µm. The Body length/Tail length (c) ratio and Anterior end to Excretory pore/ Tail length × 100 (E%) of S. populi n. sp. are substantially greater than those of all other 'Feltiae-Kushidai-Monticolum' group members. The first-generation males can be recognized by a spicule length of 66 (57-77) µm and a gubernaculum length of 46 (38-60) µm. The new species is further characterized by sequences of the internal transcribed spacer and partial 28S regions of the ribosomal DNA. Phylogenetic analyses show that Steinernema akhursti and Steinernema kushidai are the closest relatives to S. populi n. sp.

A total of 49 patients with cerebellopontine angle cholesteatoma from the Department of Neurosurgery, Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University between January 2013 and January 2021 were recruited. All patients were evaluated by MRI scan before surgery and tumor resection was performed under microscope via retrosigmoid sinus approach. Then residual tumor was searched with 0°and 30°neuroendoscopy, and tumor resection was performed.Residual tumors were foundand resectedin 38 cases under theneuroendoscopy after routine microsurgery.Total and subtotalresections were performed in 44 cases and 5 cases, respectively. Complications included aseptic meningitis (n=8), cerebrospinal fluid leakage (n=1) and intracranial hematoma (n=2). Follow-up[42±3(6-72)months] was available in all patients. During follow-up, 45 cases (91.8%) had a Kar-nofsky Performance Status (KPS)score ≥80.Neuroendoscopy-assisted microsurgery for cerebellopontine angle cholesteatomas helps enhance the total resection rate and decrease the operative risk.

Rosa (Rosaceae) is an important ornamental and medicinal plant genus worldwide, with several species being cultivated in China. Members of Sporocadaceae (pestalotioid fungi) are globally distributed and include endophytes, saprobes but also plant pathogens, infecting a broad range of host plants on which they can cause important plant diseases. Although several Sporocadaceae species were recorded to inhabit Rosa spp., the taxa occurring on Rosa remain largely unresolved. In this study, a total of 295 diseased samples were collected from branches, fruits, leaves and spines of eight Rosa species (R. chinensis, R. helenae, R. laevigata, R. multiflora, R. omeiensis, R. rugosa, R. spinosissima and R. xanthina) in Gansu, Henan, Hunan, Qinghai, Shaanxi Provinces and the Ningxia Autonomous Region of China. Subsequently 126 strains were obtained and identified based on comparisons of DNA sequence data. Based on these results 15 species residing in six genera of Sporocadaceae were delineated, including four known species (Pestalotiopsis chamaeropis, Pes. rhodomyrtus, Sporocadus sorbi and Spo. trimorphus) and 11 new species described here as Monochaetia rosarum, Neopestalotiopsis concentrica, N. subepidermalis, Pestalotiopsis tumida, Seimatosporium centrale, Seim. gracile, Seim. nonappendiculatum, Seim. parvum, Seiridium rosae, Sporocadus brevis, and Spo. spiniger. This study also represents the first report of Pes. chamaeropis, Pes. rhodomyrtus and Spo. sorbi on Rosa. The overall data revealed that Pestalotiopsis was the most prevalent genus, followed by Seimatosporium, while Pes. chamaeropis and Pes. rhodomyrtus were the two most prevalent species. It is highly desirable to design advanced heteroatomic doped porous carbon for wide application. Herein, N-doped porous carbon (NPC) was developed via the fabrication of high nitrogen cross-linked triazine polymers followed by pyrolysis and activation with controllable porous structure. The as-synthesized NPC at the pyrolysis temperature of 700 °C possessed rich nitrogen content (up to 11.51 %) and high specific surface area (1353â m2 g-1 ), which led to a high CO2 adsorption capability at 5.67â mmol g-1 at 298.15â K and 5â bar pressure and excellent stability. When the activation temperature was at 600 °C, such NPC exhibited a superior electrochemical performance as anode for supercapacitors with a specific capacitance of 158.8 and 113â F g-1 in 6â M KOH at a current density of 1 and 10â A g-1 , respectively. Notably, it delivered an excellent stability with capacity retention of 97.4 % at 20â A g-1 after 6000 cycles.

Vacancy defects are inevitable when synthesizing two-dimensional (2D) materials, and vacancy defects greatly affect the physical properties, such as magnetism and electronic properties. Currently, sufficient information is not available on whether and how the interaction of vacancy defects affects material properties and how to control these defects and their associated interaction for the development of new materials. In this study, the interaction between two adjacent vacancy defects of the gallium sulfide (GaS) monolayer is investigated using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). The results indicate that the localized size of a Ga vacancy defect is the area within the S atoms second nearest to the neighboring vacancy defect. When the localized sizes of Ga vacancy defects intersect, a non-negligible interaction exists between the Ga vacancy defects. The interaction generally has been ignored by the traditional defect concentrations model but would affect the magnetic and electronic properties of the defective GaS monolayer. A vacancy defect cluster model (VDCM) is developed based on the system clustering method and then used to evaluate the interactions between vacancy defects. In order to check the reliability of the model, this research studies a defective MoS2 monolayer as an example and compares the band gap and density of states (DOS) calculated by using different vacancy defect models, including VDCM. The results indicate that VDCM has good accuracy relative to the traditional vacancy concentration model. This means that with the help of VDCM the properties of the defective system could be calculated more accurately considering some extent of nonuniform distribution of defects based on DFT.

AIMS: To investigate the effects of three symbiotic Bradyrhizobium strains on peanut growth and on rhizobacterial communities in flowering and harvest stages in an organic farm, also to evaluate the role of plant development in influencing peanut rhizobacterial microbiota and correlations among the inoculants, rhizobacterial communities and plant growth. METHODS AND RESULTS: Peanut seeds were inoculated with three individual Bradyrhizobium strains, plant growth performance was measured in two developmental stages and rhizobacterial communities were analysed by Illumina sequencing of rpoB gene amplicons from peanut rhizosphere. The three bradyrhizobial inoculants significantly increased the nodule numbers and aboveground fresh weight of peanut plants regardless of the different growth stages, and the pod yields were increased to some extent and significantly positively correlated with Bradyrhizobium abundances in rhizosphere. Principal coordinate analysis indicated that the rhizobacterial communities were strongly influenced by the inoculation and peanut developmental stages. The bradyrhizobia inoculation increased relative abundances of potentially beneficial bacteria in peanut rhizosphere, and also altered rhizobacterial co-occurrence association networks and important network hub taxa. Similarly, plant development also significantly influenced the structure, composition and co-occurrence association networks of rhizobacterial communities. CONCLUSIONS: Bradyrhizobial inoculants increased peanut growth and yields, they and plant development affected the assembly of peanut rhizobacterial communities. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Rhizobial inoculants improved the host plant performance that might also be associated with the dynamic changes in rhizobacterial community except enhancing the biological nitrogen fixation and helps to profoundly understand the mechanism how rhizobia inoculants improve plant growth and yields.

Electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) is a kind of solid waste with a high silicon content. Most of the silicon in EMR, however, exist in the state of SiO2, which cannot be directly absorbed by plants. Currently, it is very challenge to recover the silicon from EMR. In this study, a preliminary screening of strains with silicon-activating ability was conducted, and four strains were screened out and isolated from the soil around the tailings pond of EMR. Then, single factor experiments were conducted to obtain the optimal growth conditions of the four strains, and the results indicated that the Ochrobactrum sp. T-07 had the best silicon-activating ability from EMR after nitrosoguanidine mutagenesis (Ochrobactrum sp. T-07-B). The available silicon (in terms of SiO2) in the leaching solution was up to 123.88 mg L-1, which was significantly higher than that produced by Bacillus circulans and Paenibacillus mucilaginosus, the two commercial available pure culture strains. Results of direct/indirect contact experiments between Ochrobactrum sp. T-07-B and EMR revealed that bioleaching was promoted under the synergistic effect of bacteria growth on the surface of and metabolism within EMR. The newly isolated strains with silicon-activating effect are different from the existing-known silicate bacteria and may be used for more efficient silicon activation in silicate minerals.
