RESUMEN

A unique association between desquamative interstitial pneumonia and granulomatous lymphadenopathy in a six-year-old black girl is presented. Although clinical and laboratory improvement followed corticosteroid therapy, fairly severe restrictive pulmonary disease persisted.

RESUMEN

Despite significant strides in serologic methodologies, the skin test, when properly done, has remained the single most sensitive and practical assay for specific dermal-bound reaginic antibody. Its value could further be enhanced if and when characterization and standardization of the allergen extracts become a reality. While the technique is simple, the indications and interpretations of allergy skin tests required the expertise of well-trained allergists. A positive skin reaction is no more than a mere supportive laboratory aid in the diagnosis of allergic disease, which is arrived at through a carefully taken detailed history and a meticulously done physical examination.

RESUMEN

Thirty-seven (74%) of 50 randomly selected non-atopic individuals gave precipitins against one or more of the seven common aeroallergen extracts surveyed by counterimmunoelectrophoresis. The precipitin lines could be absorbed out by antihuman IgG and homologous extracts, but were not affected by N-acetyl-glucosamine, protein A, heterologous extracts, heating, anti-reactive protein, anti-IgA, or anti-IgM. Our data suggest that the precipitins to allergen extracts are probably IgG3 and are more prevalent than had been previously reported in non-atopic individuals.

RESUMEN

Twelve non-atopic and 27 atopic preschool children were studied to determine the effect of pertussis booster vaccination on cutaneous histamine sensitivity and IgE antibody response to the naturally-occurring ragweed aeroallergen. Prick tests of histamine and ragweed extract, as well as ragweed-RAST, were performed prior to, and after, their booster injections. Ragweed skin tests and RAST were not repeated until 2 weeks after the end of ragweed pollination. None of the parameters changed significantly in either group regardless of the type of immunization administered.
