RESUMEN

TiO2-supported Pt species have been widely applied in numerous critical reactions involving photo-, thermo-, and electrochemical-catalysis for decades. Manipulation of the state of the Pt species in Pt/TiO2 catalysts is crucial for fine-tuning their catalytic performance. Here, we report an interesting discovery showing the epitaxial growth of PtO2 atomic layers on rutile TiO2, potentially allowing control of the states of active Pt species in Pt/TiO2 catalysts. The presence of PtO2 atomic layers could modulate the geometric configuration and electronic state of the Pt species under reduction conditions, resulting in a spread of the particle shape and obtaining a Pt/PtO2/TiO2 structure with more positive valence of Pt species. As a result, such a catalyst exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic activity and stability toward hydrogen evolution reaction, while also promoting the thermocatalytic CO oxidation, surpassing the performance of the Pt/TiO2 catalyst with no epitaxial structure. This novel epitaxial growth of the PtO2 structure on rutile TiO2 in Pt/TiO2 catalysts shows its potential in the rational design of highly active and economical catalysts toward diverse catalytic reactions.

RESUMEN

Municipal solid waste (MSW) management systems play a crucial role in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in China. Although the government has implemented many policies to improve the MSW management system, the impact of these improvements on city-level GHG emission reduction remains largely unexplored. This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of both direct and downstream GHG emissions from the MSW sector, encompassing sanitary landfill, dump, incineration, and biological treatment, across 352 Chinese cities from 2001 to 2021 by adopting inventory methods recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The results reveal that (1) GHG emissions from the MSW sector in China peaked at 70.6 Tg of CO2 equiv in 2018, followed by a significant decline to 47.6 Tg of CO2 equiv in 2021, (2) cities with the highest GHG emission reduction benefits in the MSW sector were historical emission hotspots over the past 2 decades, and (3) with the potential achievement of zero-landfilling policy by 2030, an additional reduction of 203.7 Tg of CO2 equiv is projected, with the emission reduction focus toward cities in South China (21.9%), Northeast China (17.8%), and Southwest China (17.3%). This study highlights that, even without explicit emission reduction targets for the MSW sector, the improvements of this sector have significantly reduced GHG emissions in China.

RESUMEN

PURPOSES: To investigate the effect and safety of ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) for fertility preservation in female patients with hematological diseases. METHODS: We designed a retrospective study. The clinical data of patients with hematological diseases undergoing OTC admitted to Peking University People's Hospital from April 2017 to January 2023 were analyzed and summarized. RESULTS: A total of 24 patients were included in the study, including 19 patients with malignant hematological diseases and 5 patients with non-malignant hematological diseases. The former included 14 patients with acute leukemia, 1 patient with chronic leukemia, and 4 patients with myelodysplastic syndrome, while the latter 5 patients were aplastic anemia (AA). 16 patients had received chemotherapy before OTC. The average age of 24 patients was 22.80 ± 6.81 years. The average anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) was 1.97 ± 2.12 ng/mL, and the average follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) was 7.01 ± 4.24 IU/L in examination before OTC. FSH was greater than 10.0 IU/L in 4 cases. The pre-OTC laboratory tests showed that the average white blood cell (WBC) count was (3.33 ± 1.35) × 109/L, the average hemoglobin was 91.42 ± 22.84 g/L, and the average platelet was (147.38 ± 114.46) × 109/L. After injection of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF), blood transfusion, and iron supplementation in pre-OTC treatment, the average WBC count was (4.91 ± 3.07) × 109/L, the average hemoglobin was 98.67 ± 15.43 g/L, and the average platelet was (156.38 ± 103.22) × 109/L. Of the 24 patients, 22 underwent laparoscopic bilateral partial oophorectomy and oophoroplasty, and 2 underwent laparoscopic unilateral oophorectomy. The average duration of OTC was 59.54 ± 17.58 min, and the average blood loss was 32.1 ± 41.6 mL. The maximum blood loss was 200 mL. There was no significant difference in WBC count and hemoglobin concentration after OTC compared to pre-OTC period. Only the platelet count after OTC surgery was significantly different from that before surgery ([134.54 ± 80.84 vs. 156.38 ± 103.22] × 109/L, p < 0.05). None of the 24 patients had serious complications after OTC. 2 patients had mild infection symptoms, but both recovered well. 23 patients underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) after OTC. The median and interquartile range from OTC to the pretreatment of HSCT was 33 (57) days, and the median and interquartile range from OTC to HSCT was 41 (57) days. Seven of them began pretreatment of HSCT within 20 days and began HSCT within 30 days after OTC. All patients were followed up. Of the 23 patients who underwent HSCT after surgery, 22 presented with amenorrhea and 1 with scanty menstrual episodes. Seven patients underwent hormone replacement therapy (HRT) after HSCT. A patient with AA underwent ovarian tissue transplantation (OTT) 3 years after HSCT and resumed regular menstruation 6 months after OTT. CONCLUSIONS: Ovarian tissue cryopreservation has a promising future in fertility protection in patients with hematological diseases. However, patients with hematological malignancies often have received gonadotoxic therapy before OTC, which may be accompanied by myelosuppression while patients with non-malignant hematological diseases often present with severe hemocytopenia. So perioperative complete blood count of patients should be paid attention to. There was no significant difference in the WBC count and hemoglobin concentration in patients with hematological diseases before and after OTC surgery, and the platelet count decreased slightly within the normal range. Infection is the most common post-OTC complication, and HSCT pretreatment can be accepted as early as the 10th day after OTC. OTC has no adverse effects on patients with hematological diseases and does not delay HSCT treatment. For young patients with hematological diseases, OTC is an effective method of fertility preservation.

RESUMEN

Electrifying the transport sector is crucial for reducing CO2 emissions and achieving Paris Agreement targets. This largely depends on rapid decarbonization in power plants; however, we often overlook the trade-offs between reduced transportation emissions and additional energy-supply sector emissions induced by electrification. Here, we developed a framework for China's transport sector, including analyzing driving factors of historical CO2 emissions, collecting energy-related parameters of numerous vehicles based on the field- investigation, and assessing the energy-environment impacts of electrification policies with national heterogeneity. We find holistic electrification in China's transport sector will cause substantial cumulative CO2 emission reduction (2025-2075), equivalent to 19.8-42% of global annual emissions, but with a 2.2-16.1 GtCO2 net increase considering the additional emissions in energy-supply sectors. It also leads to a 5.1- to 6.7-fold increase in electricity demand, and the resulting CO2 emissions far surpass the emission reduction achieved. Only under 2 and 1.5 °C scenarios, forcing further decarbonization in the energy supply sectors, will the holistic electrification of transportation have a robust mitigation effect, -2.5 to -7.0 Gt and -6.4 to -11.3 Gt net-negative emissions, respectively. Therefore, we conclude that electrifying the transport sector cannot be a one-size-fits-all policy, requiring synergistically decarbonization efforts in the energy-supply sectors.

RESUMEN

Because of its long running time, complex working environment, and for other reasons, a gear is prone to failure, and early failure is difficult to detect by direct observation; therefore, fault diagnosis of gears is very necessary. Neural network algorithms have been widely used to realize gear fault diagnosis, but the structure of the neural network model is complicated, the training time is long and the model is not easy to converge. To solve the above problems and combine the advantages of the ResNeXt50 model in the extraction of image features, this paper proposes a gearbox fault detection method that integrates the convolutional block attention module (CBAM). Firstly, the CBAM is embedded in the ResNeXt50 network to enhance the extraction of image channels and spatial features. Secondly, the different time-frequency analysis method was compared and analyzed, and the method with the better effect was selected to convert the one-dimensional vibration signal in the open data set of the gearbox into a two-dimensional image, eliminating the influence of the redundant background noise, and took it as the input of the model for training. Finally, the accuracy and the average training time of the model were obtained by entering the test set into the model, and the results were compared with four other classical convolutional neural network models. The results show that the proposed method performs well both in fault identification accuracy and average training time under two working conditions, and it also provides some references for existing gear failure diagnosis research.

RESUMEN

To investigate the computed tomography (CT) image characteristics, adjacent tissues, and related measurement indices of the sternal foramina and provide an anatomical basis for the safety of minimally invasive sternum surgery. The data from 2500 thoracic multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) cases from January 2020 to June 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. The number and location of the sternal foramina and adjacent tissues (mediastinal adipose tissue, lung, pericardium) were observed. The size of the sternal foramina, CT value of the tissue inside the foramina, subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness, distance from skin to lung, distance from skin to the pericardium, and manubrio-foraminal distance were measured. Sex differences were compared for each indicator performed. The incidence of sternal foramina was 4.44% (111/2500), with 83 males and 28 females. All sternal foramina were located at the mesosternum's fourth to sixth costal cartilage level. The transverse diameter of the sternal foramina was (0.60 ± 0.29) cm, and the vertical diameter was (0.68 ± 0.39) cm, which was greater in males than females (p > 0.01). The CT value of the tissue in the sternal foramina was (-77.05 ± 32.26) Hu, and there was no statistical difference between male and female patients (t = -1.780, p = 0.078). The adjacent tissues of the sternal foramina were only adjacent to adipose tissue in 41 cases (36.94%), pericardium in 18 patients (16.22%), lung tissue in 37 cases (33.33%), and both kinds of tissue in 15 cases (13.51%). The sternal foramina were not adjacent to the left lung in the female patients. In the sternal foramina region, the thickness of subcutaneous adipose tissue was (1.13 ± 0.51) cm, the distance from skin to lung was (1.86 ± 0.57) cm, the distance from skin to pericardium was (3.07 ± 0.72) cm, the manubrio-foraminal distance was (12.68 ± 1.31) cm, which was significantly greater in males than in females (p < 0.05). The sternal foramina are closely related to the heart and lungs. The size and location of sternal foramina, the thickness of subcutaneous adipose tissue, and the distance from skin to heart and lung are all crucial factors in evaluating the safety of sternal puncture biopsy.

RESUMEN

Sustainable development goal (SDG), which focuses on affordable and sustainable energy, provides a practical solution to realize sustainable growth. In addition, this target can encourage the realization of SDG 13 (climate action). However, factors like political and financial risk can impact climate actions and renewable energy. Therefore, this research extends the debate on the ecological footprint (EF) mitigation and achievement of SDGs by evaluating the renewable energy, political risk, financial risk, and EF nexus in an Environment Kuznets Curve (EKC) framework from 1986 to 2018. Panel data for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is estimated using second-generation approaches. The CuP-FM test results indicated that the EKC is present in ASEAN in the context of renewable energy, financial risk, and political risk. Furthermore, the findings revealed that controlling political and financial risks is a useful mitigation strategy because EF decreases as these risks are reduced. Notably, a decrease in EF has been linked to the use of renewable energy. These results are verified by using CO2 emissions as an alternative proxy for environmental degradation. Moreover, both financial and political risk Granger cause renewable energy and economic growth indicating that controlling financial and political risk is necessary for sustainable development.

RESUMEN

Most researchers consider CO2 emissions to be the primary indicator of environmental degradation. Similarly, ecological footprint appears to be a significant proxy for environmental degradation in recent research due to its multifaceted impact on the natural environment. With this in mind, this study investigates fluctuations in CO2 emissions and ecological footprint as indicators of environmental degradation in Bangladesh from 1980 to 2020, and how they are influenced by net savings, natural resource depletion, technological innovation, and democracy. The non-linear ARDL (NARDL)-based asymmetric analysis finds that positive changes in net savings, natural resource depletion, and democracy positively impact both parameters of environmental degradation in the long run. On the other hand, a positive change in technological innovation reduces these parameters in the long run. Likewise, negative changes in net savings and technological innovation reduce environmental degradation. In contrast, negative changes in natural resource depletion and democracy exacerbate these two parameters and degrade environmental quality in the long run. However, there are some variations in the short-run influence of the predictors on the predicted variable. Overall, the findings of this study suggest that policymakers must strategically exploit natural resources, net savings, technology diffusion, and democratic principles to preserve the natural environment in Bangladesh.

RESUMEN

This paper studies the impact of electricity price reduction policy on the economic activities and carbon emissions of different industries. Since 2018, the Chinese government has advocated reducing electricity price for industrial customers in order to alleviate the non-tax burden on businesses. Using monthly electricity consumption and user data from 2016 to 2019, we find that the electricity price reduction has significantly increased the industrial electricity consumption and users. Heterogeneity analyses show that the effect is greater in heavy polluted industries and industries in low and medium GDP regions. The results of threshold impact analysis show that the threshold value of heavy pollution industries was lower than that of general industry and commerce, while heavy pollution industries are more sensitive to electricity prices than general industries. Moreover, the reduction of electricity prices results in a higher percentage of carbon emissions growth in heavy pollution industries. Our result can also help the policymakers access the costs and benefits of electricity price reduction for industrial customers more accurately.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Tanshinone IIA has a wide range of myocardial protective effects. AK003290 is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) that is highly expressed in myocardial tissue, and its expression is down-regulated when myocardial injury occurs. This study aims to explore the mechanism for tanshinone IIA in alleviating myocardial cell damage induced by oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD). METHODS: OGD model was established in rat H9C2 cardiomyocytes. siRNA was transfected to reduce AK003290 expression. H9C2 cells were divided into 6 groups: A control group, a tanshinone IIA (TAN) group, an OGD group, a tanshinone IIA+OGD (TAN+OGD) group, a scrambled siRNA transfection+tanshinone IIA+OGD (scrambled siRNA+TAN+OGD) group, and a AK003290 siRNA transfection+tanshinone IIA+OGD (AK003290 siRNA+TAN+OGD) group. H9C2 cells in the TAN group were treated with 40 µmol/L tanshinone IIA for 12 h. The TAN+OGD group was treated with 40 µmol/L tanshinone IIA for 12 h, followed by OGD treatment for 12 h. The scrambled siRNA+TAN+OGD group and AK003290 siRNA+TAN+OGD group were transfected with the scrambled siRNA or AK003290 siRNA. Twenty-four hours later, the cells were treated with tanshinone IIA and OGD. Real-time RT-PCR was used to detect the expression of AK003290. Spectrophotometry was used to detect the content of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in cell culture medium to reflect LDH leakage rate, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect the content of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and interleukin-18 (IL-18). Western blotting was used to detect the protein expression of phospho-nuclear factor- κB (p-NF-κB). RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the leakage rate of LDH, the content of IL-1ß and IL-18 in culture medium, and the protein expression level of p-NF-κB were increased in the OGD group (P<0.01 or P<0.001). Compared with the OGD group, the leakage rate of LDH, the content of IL-1ß and IL-18 in culture medium, and the protein expression level of p-NF-κB were decreased in the TAN+OGD group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Compared with the control group, the AK003290 expression was increased in the TAN group (P<0.01) and it was decreased in the OGD group (P<0.05). Compared with the OGD group, the AK003290 expression was increased in the TAN+OGD group (P<0.05). Compared with the scrambled siRNA+TAN+OGD group, the leakage rate of LDH, the content of IL-1ß and IL-18 in culture medium, and the protein expression level of p-NF-κB were increased in the AK003290 siRNA+TAN+OGD group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Tanshinone IIA inhibits NF-κB activity and attenuates OGD-induced inflammatory injury of cardiomyocytes through up-regulating AK003290.

RESUMEN

The structural heterogeneity of surface metal species, which is represented by the distribution in size, morphology, and local coordination environment of the active metal component, is almost inevitable in practical supported metal catalysts. This is often regarded as a major hindrance to the full utilization of metal loading and the high mass-specific catalytic activity. In this work, by quantitative evaluation of the individual reaction steps of a probe reaction, cyclohexanol dehydrogenation (an important reaction for hydrogen storage and transportation as well as high valued chemical production), we demonstrate that the inherent heterogeneity of supported Rhodium catalysts prepared by conventional synthesis has unique advantages in a complex heterogeneous catalytic reaction. The isolated Rh species (Rh1) is extremely active for the first step of dehydrogenation, the transformation of cyclohexanol to cyclohexanone, while the Rh ensemble sites (Rhe, including Rh clusters, Rhn, and Rh nanoparticles, Rhp) are highly efficient for the successive reaction step, cyclohexanone to phenol, for which the Rh1 sites are almost inactive. Only with the coexistence of both active structures could the optimal reaction performance be achieved, which ambiguously demonstrates the importance of species heterogeneity in some multistep catalytic reactions. Our study provides a new view of the benefits from structural heterogeneity in practical catalysts and sheds light on the catalyst design strategy for complex catalytic reactions.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate the generation of high average power femtosecond laser radiation by combination of an Nd-doped picosecond amplifier and a multi-pass cell device. With this efficient and robust scheme, the pulse duration of a picosecond amplifier is compressed from 9.13 ps to 477 fs, corresponding to a compression factor of 19.1. The average power before and after pulse compression is 77 W and 56.5 W respectively, so the overall transmission reaches 73.4%. The presented scheme offers a viable route toward low-cost and simple configuration high power femtosecond lasers driven by Nd-doped picosecond amplifiers.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate temporal contrast improvement through cascaded second-order nonlinear processes in a 340-µm BBO crystal. The process was initiated by second harmonic (SH) generation, followed by difference frequency generation (DFG) between the SH and the short wavelength part of the fundamental wave (FW). The idler of DFG was selected by a spectral filter, and an output pulse energy of 573 µJ was obtained at 1 kHz with excellent spatial profile and a power fluctuation as low as 0.076% (rms) in 14 hours. The temporal contrast was improved by more than 2 orders of magnitude to approximately 1011, which could be further enhanced with different spectral filters. The excellent stability, energy scalability, and contrast enhancement ability make this simple and robust method very suitable to be integrated into the pulse cleaning system in many different ultra-intense laser facilities.

RESUMEN

We experimentally demonstrate a 38-fs chirped-pulse amplified (CPA) Ti:sapphire laser system based on the power-scalable thin-disk scheme with an average output power of 1.45 W at a repetition rate of 1 kHz, corresponding to peak power of 38 GW. The beam profile close to the diffraction limit with a measured M2 value of approximately 1.1 is obtained. It demonstrates the potential for an ultra-intense laser with high beam quality compared with the conventional bulk gain amplifier. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier based on the thin-disk approach reaching 1 kHz.

RESUMEN

We are not on track to meet the SDGs by 2030 despite considerable efforts. Sino-US trade war and the COVID-19 pandemic raise the tide of trade protection that may also go against SDGs. To explore how international trade affects SDGs, this study quantifies the impacts of international trade on global energy and water inequality by constructing resource-Gini-coefficients in terms of reserve, production, and consumption. We find that international trade alleviates global inequality in energy use, in which direct energy trade reduces the inequality significantly while nonenergy commodity trade aggravates it slightly. However, international trade has a pretty minor impact on improving global water inequality. The developing economies suffer a large amount of embodied energy and water outflows. For example, BRICS exported 712.3 Mtoe of embodied energy and 130.5 billion m3 of virtual water to the rest of the world, exceeding the sum of energy/water use in Germany and France. The developed economies, especially the USA and EU, outsource energy- and water-intensive commodities to reduce domestic energy shortage and water stress, roughly corresponding to India's energy use and two times of water use of South Africa.

RESUMEN

The COVID-19 pandemic caused severe economic contraction and paralyzed industrial activity. Despite a growing body of literature on the impacts of COVID-19 mitigation measures, scant evidence currently exists on the impacts of lockdowns on the economic and industrial activities of developing countries. Our study provides an empirical assessment of lockdown measures using 298,354 data points on daily electricity consumption in 396 sub-industries. To infer causal relationships, we employ difference-in-differences models that compare cities with and without lockdown policies and provide quantitative evidence on whether the long-term gain of lockdowns outweighs the short-term loss. The results show that lockdown policies led to a significant short-term drop in electricity consumption of 15.2% relative to the control group. However, the electricity loss under the no-lockdown scenario is 2.6 times larger than that under the strict lockdown scenario within 4 months of the outbreak. Discrepancies in the impacts among industries are identified, and even within the same industry, lockdowns have heterogeneous effects. The impact of lockdowns on small and medium-sized enterprises in developing countries is seriously underestimated, raising concerns about the distributional impact of subsidy measures. This study serves as a crucial reference for the government when facing public health emergencies and shocks to support better policies.

RESUMEN

As one of the extensively used feed additives in livestock and poultry breeding, p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA) has become an organoarsenic pollutant with great concern. For the efficient removal of p-ASA from water, the combination of chemical oxidation and adsorption is recognized as a promising process. Herein, hollow/porous Mn-Fe-mixed oxide (MnFeO) nanocubes were synthesized and used in coupling with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to oxidize p-ASA and remove the total arsenic (As). Under acidic conditions, both p-ASA and total As could be completely removed in the PMS/MnFeO process and the overall performance was substantially better than that of the Mn/Fe monometallic system. More importantly, an interface-promoted direct oxidation mechanism was found in the p-ASA-involved PMS/MnFeO system. Rather than activate PMS to generate reactive oxygen species (i.e., SO4·-, ·OH, and 1O2), the MnFeO nanocubes first adsorbed p-ASA to form a ligand-oxide interface, which improved the oxidation of the adsorbed p-ASA by PMS and ultimately enhanced the removal of the total As. Such a direct oxidation process achieved selective oxidation of p-ASA and avoidance of severe interference from the commonly present constituents in real water samples. After facile elution with dilute alkali solution, the used MnFeO nanocubes exhibited superior recyclability in the repeated p-ASA removal experiments. Therefore, this work provides a promising approach for efficient abatement of phenylarsenical-caused water pollution based on the PMS/MnFeO oxidation process.

RESUMEN

As an oncometabolite, lactate plays a very important role in tumor proliferation, metastasis, angiogenesis, immune escape and other tumor biological functions. Pharmacological inhibition oflactate transport has been viewed as a promising therapeutic strategy to target a range of human cancers. In this study, a series of new coumarin-3-carboxylic acid derivatives 5a-t and 9a-b were synthesized and evaluated as lactate transport inhibitors. Their cytotoxic activity has been tested against three cell lines high-expressing and low-expressing monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1) which acts as the main carrier for lactate. Compound 5c-e, 5g-i and 5m-o showed significant cytotoxicity and good selectivity against Hela and HCT116 cell lines with high MCT1 expression. Notably, coumarin-3-hydrazide 5o, the lead molecule with the most potent cytotoxic activity, exhibitedsignificant anti-proliferationandapoptosisinductioneffects. Further studies revealed that compound 5o decreased the expression level of target MCT1, and suppressed the energetic metabolism of Hela and HCT116 cells byremarkably reducing glucoseconsumptionandlactate production. Additionally, compound 5o induced intracellular lactate accumulation and inhibited lactate uptake, which implied that it blocked lactate transport via MCT1. These results indicate a good start point for the development of lactate transport inhibitors as new anticancer agents.

RESUMEN

African swine fever, a serious infectious disease, has been found in many countries around the world over the last nearly 100 years, and causes untold damage to the economy wherever it occurs. Diagnosis is currently performed by real-time PCR, which is highly sensitive but can only be carried out in a diagnostic laboratory environment with sophisticated equipment and expertise. A sensitive, rapid diagnostic method that can be implemented in agricultural settings is thus urgently needed for the detection and control of African swine fever virus (ASFV) infection. In this study, we developed an isothermal amplification technology to achieve molecular diagnosis of ASFV in clinical samples, using recombinase-aided amplification (RAA) assay combined with a portable instrument. This assay method avoids the limitations of traditional real-time PCR and offers detection times within 20 min, enabling detection of as few as 10 copies of ASFV DNA molecules per reaction without cross-reaction with other common swine viruses. We evaluated clinical performance using 200 clinical blood samples. The coincidence rate of the detection results between rt-RAA and RT-qPCR was 96.94% positive, 100% negative, and 97.50% total. We have also developed an rt-RAA system for the detection of ASFV targeting the EP402R gene, with detection of as few as 10 copies of DNA per reaction; this offers the possibility of DIVA (differentiating infected from vaccinated animals) diagnosis, because CD2V gene-deleted ASFV could soon be approved to be the leading candidate for live attenuated vaccine in China. The rt-RAA assay is a reliable, rapid, highly sensitive method, and it offers a reasonable alternative to RT-qPCR for point-of-care detection of ASFV. KEY POINTS: • The RT-RAA assay can detect as few as 10 copies of ASFV genome per reaction within 20 min. • The rt-RAA assay system targeting different genes can achieve differentiating infected from vaccinated diagnosis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Sepsis-associated thrombocytopenia (SAT) is common in critical patients and results in the elevation of mortality. Red cell distribution width (RDW) can reflect body response to inflammation and oxidative stress. We try to investigate the relationship between the RDW and the prognosis of patients with SAT through machine learning. METHODS: 809 patients were retrospectively analyzed from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III (MIMIC-III) database. The eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) were used to analyze the impact of each feature. Logistic regression analysis, propensity score matching (PSM), receiver-operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis, and the Kaplan-Meier method were used for data processing. RESULTS: The patients with thrombocytopenia had higher 28-day mortality (48.2%). Machine learning indicated that RDW was the second most important in predicting 28-day mortality. The RDW was significantly increased in non-survivors by logistic regression and PSM. ROC curve shows that RDW has moderate predictive power for 28-day mortality. The patients with RDW>16.05 exhibited higher mortality through Kaplan-Meier analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Interpretable machine learning can be applied in clinical research. Elevated RDW is not only common in patients with SAT but is also associated with a poor prognosis.
