BACKGROUND: The growth and development of organism were dependent on the effect of genetic, environment, and their interaction. In recent decades, lots of candidate additive genetic markers and genes had been detected by using genome-widely association study (GWAS). However, restricted to computing power and practical tool, the interactive effect of markers and genes were not revealed clearly. And utilization of these interactive markers is difficult in the breeding and prediction, such as genome selection (GS). RESULTS: Through the Power-FDR curve, the GbyE algorithm can detect more significant genetic loci at different levels of genetic correlation and heritability, especially at low heritability levels. The additive effect of GbyE exhibits high significance on certain chromosomes, while the interactive effect detects more significant sites on other chromosomes, which were not detected in the first two parts. In prediction accuracy testing, in most cases of heritability and genetic correlation, the majority of prediction accuracy of GbyE is significantly higher than that of the mean method, regardless of whether the rrBLUP model or BGLR model is used for statistics. The GbyE algorithm improves the prediction accuracy of the three Bayesian models BRR, BayesA, and BayesLASSO using information from genetic by environmental interaction (G × E) and increases the prediction accuracy by 9.4%, 9.1%, and 11%, respectively, relative to the Mean value method. The GbyE algorithm is significantly superior to the mean method in the absence of a single environment, regardless of the combination of heritability and genetic correlation, especially in the case of high genetic correlation and heritability. CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, this study constructed a new genotype design model program (GbyE) for GWAS and GS using Kronecker product. which was able to clearly estimate the additive and interactive effects separately. The results showed that GbyE can provide higher statistical power for the GWAS and more prediction accuracy of the GS models. In addition, GbyE gives varying degrees of improvement of prediction accuracy in three Bayesian models (BRR, BayesA, and BayesCpi). Whatever the phenotype were missed in the single environment or multiple environments, the GbyE also makes better prediction for inference population set. This study helps us understand the interactive relationship between genomic and environment in the complex traits. OBJECTIVES: To systemically analyse the heterogeneity in the clinical manifestations and prognoses of patients with antisynthetase syndrome (ASS) and evaluate the transcriptional signatures related to different clinical phenotypes. METHODS: A total of 701 patients with ASS were retrospectively enrolled. The clinical presentation and prognosis were assessed in association with four anti-aminoacyl transfer RNA synthetase (ARS) antibodies: anti-Jo1, anti-PL7, anti-PL12 and anti-EJ. Unsupervised machine learning was performed for patient clustering independent of anti-ARS antibodies. Transcriptome sequencing was conducted in clustered ASS patients and healthy controls. RESULTS: Patients with four different anti-ARS antibody subtypes demonstrated no significant differences in the incidence of rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease (RP-ILD) or prognoses. Unsupervised machine learning, independent of anti-ARS specificity, identified three endotypes with distinct clinical features and outcomes. Endotype 1 (RP-ILD cluster, 23.7%) was characterised by a high incidence of RP-ILD and a high mortality rate. Endotype 2 (dermatomyositis (DM)-like cluster, 14.5%) corresponded to patients with DM-like skin and muscle symptoms with an intermediate prognosis. Endotype 3 (arthritis cluster, 61.8%) was characterised by arthritis and mechanic's hands, with a good prognosis. Transcriptome sequencing revealed that the different endotypes had distinct gene signatures and biological processes. CONCLUSIONS: Anti-ARS antibodies were not significant in stratifying ASS patients into subgroups with greater homogeneity in RP-ILD and prognoses. Novel ASS endotypes were identified independent of anti-ARS specificity and differed in clinical outcomes and transcriptional signatures, providing new insights into the pathogenesis of ASS.

BACKGROUND: Biological-derived hydroxyapatite is widely used as a bone substitute for addressing bone defects, but its limited osteoconductive properties necessitate further improvement. The osteo-immunomodulatory properties hold crucial promise in maintaining bone homeostasis, and precise modulation of macrophage polarization is essential in this process. Metabolism serves as a guiding force for immunity, and fluoride modification represents a promising strategy for modulating the osteoimmunological environment by regulating immunometabolism. In this context, we synthesized fluorinated porcine hydroxyapatite (FPHA), and has demonstrated its enhanced biological properties and osteogenic capacity. However, it remains unknown whether and how FPHA affects the immune microenvironment of the bone defects. METHODS: FPHA was synthesized and its composition and structural properties were confirmed. Macrophages were cultured with FPHA extract to investigate the effects of FPHA on their polarization and the related osteo-immune microenvironment. Furthermore, total RNA of these macrophages was extracted, and RNA-seq analysis was performed to explore the underlying mechanisms associated with the observed changes in macrophages. The metabolic states were evaluated with a Seahorse analyzer. Additionally, immunohistochemical staining was performed to evaluate the macrophages response after implantation of the novel bone substitutes in critical size calvarial defects in SD rats. RESULTS: The incorporation of fluoride ions in FPHA was validated. FPHA promoted macrophage proliferation and enhanced the expression of M2 markers while suppressing the expression of M1 markers. Additionally, FPHA inhibited the expression of inflammatory factors and upregulated the expression of osteogenic factors, thereby enhancing the osteogenic differentiation capacity of the rBMSCs. RNA-seq analysis suggested that the polarization-regulating function of FPHA may be related to changes in cellular metabolism. Further experiments confirmed that FPHA enhanced mitochondrial function and promoted the metabolic shift of macrophages from glycolysis to oxidative phosphorylation. Moreover, in vivo experiments validated the above results in the calvarial defect model in SD rats. CONCLUSION: In summary, our study reveals that FPHA induces a metabolic shift in macrophages from glycolysis to oxidative phosphorylation. This shift leads to an increased tendency toward M2 polarization in macrophages, consequently creating a favorable osteo-immune microenvironment. These findings provide valuable insights into the impact of incorporating an appropriate concentration of fluoride on immunometabolism and macrophage mitochondrial function, which have important implications for the development of fluoride-modified immunometabolism-based bone regenerative biomaterials and the clinical application of FPHA or other fluoride-containing materials.

The retrovirus HIV-1 integrates into the host genome and establishes a latent viral reservoir that escapes immune surveillance. Molecular mechanisms of HIV-1 latency have been studied extensively to achieve a cure for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Latency-reversing agents (LRAs) have been developed to reactivate and eliminate the latent reservoir by the immune system. To develop more promising LRAs, it is essential to evaluate new therapeutic targets. Here, we find that CBX4, a component of the Polycomb Repressive Complex 1 (PRC1), contributes to HIV-1 latency in seven latency models and primary CD4+ T cells. CBX4 forms nuclear bodies with liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) properties on the HIV-1 long terminal repeat (LTR) and recruits EZH2, the catalytic subunit of PRC2. CBX4 SUMOylates EZH2 utilizing its SUMO E3 ligase activity, thereby enhancing the H3K27 methyltransferase activity of EZH2. Our results indicate that CBX4 acts as a bridge between the repressor complexes PRC1 and PRC2 that act synergistically to maintain HIV-1 latency. Dissolution of phase-separated CBX4 bodies could be a potential intervention to reactivate latent HIV-1.

The effective and affordable separation of oil and water, a crucial process in the safe handling of environmental disasters such as crude oil spills and recovery of valuable resources, is a highly sought-after yet challenging task. Herein, superhydrophobic PU sponge was fabricated for the fast and cost-effective adsorptive separation of oil and different organic solvents from water. Octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS)-functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell microspheres were dip-coated on the surface of porous materials via a dip-coating process, thereby endowing them with superhydrophobicity. Owing to the hydrophobic interaction between OTS molecules and oil and increased capillary force in the micropores, the resulting superhydrophobic sponge served as a selective oil-sorbent scaffold for absorbing oil from oil-water mixtures, including oil-water suspensions and emulsions. Remarkably, after the recovery of the adsorbed oil via mechanical extrusion, these superhydrophobic materials could be reused multiple times and maintain their oil-water separation efficacy even after 10 oil-water separation cycles.

Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile bacterium strain ZFBP2030T was isolated from a rock on the North slope of Mount Everest. This strain contained a unique ubiquinone-10 (Q-10) as a predominant respiratory quinone. Among the tested fatty acids, the strain contained summed feature 8, C14:0 2OH, and C16:0, as major cellular fatty acids. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidyl glycerol, phosphatidyl ethanolamine, three unidentified phospholipids, two unidentified aminolipids, and six unidentified lipids. The cell-wall peptidoglycan was a meso-diaminopimelic acid, and cell-wall sugars were ribose and galactose. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain ZFBP2030T was a member of the genus Sphingomonas, exhibiting high sequence similarity to the 16S rRNA gene sequences of Sphingomonas aliaeris DH-S5T (97.9%), Sphingomonas alpina DSM 22537T (97.3%) and Sphingomonas hylomeconis CCTCC AB 2013304T (97.0%). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between ZFBP2030T and other typical strains was less than 97.0%. The average amino acid identity values, average nucleotide identity, and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain ZFBP2030T and its highest sequence similarity strains were 56.9-79.9%, 65.1-82.2%, and 19.3-25.8%, respectively. The whole-genome size of the novel strain ZFBP2030T was 4.1 Mbp, annotated with 3838 protein-coding genes and 54 RNA genes. Moreover, DNA G + C content was 64.7 mol%. Stress-related functions predicted in the subsystem classification of the strain ZFBP2030T genome included osmotic, oxidative, cold/heat shock, detoxification, and periplasmic stress responses. The overall results of this study clearly showed that strain ZFBP2030T is a novel species of the genus Sphingomonas, for which the name Sphingomonas endolithica sp. nov. is proposed. The type of strain is ZFBP2030T (= EE 013T = GDMCC 1.3123T = JCM 35386T).

BACKGROUND: Accurate prediction of acute exacerbation helps select patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for individualized therapy. The potential of lymphocyte subsets to function as clinical predictive factors for acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) remains uncertain. METHODS: In this single-center prospective cohort study with a 2-year follow-up, 137 patients aged 51 to 79 with AECOPD were enrolled. We examined the prognostic indicators of AECOPD by analyzing lymphocyte subsets and baseline symptom score. Furthermore, a predictive model was constructed to anticipate the occurrence of respiratory failure in patients experiencing AECOPD. RESULTS: The COPD Assessment Test (CAT) score combined with home oxygen therapy and CD4+CD8+ T cells% to predict respiratory failure in AECOPD patients were the best (the area under the curves [AUC] = 0.77, 95% CI: 0.70-0.86, P < 0.0001, sensitivity: 60.4%, specificity: 86.8%). The nomogram model, the C index, calibration plot, decision curve analysis, and clinical impact curve all indicate the model's good predictive performance. The observed decrease in the proportions of CD4+CD8+ T cells appears to be correlated with more unfavorable outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The nomogram model, developed to forecast respiratory failure in patients with AECOPD, utilizing variables such as home oxygen therapy, CAT score, and CD4+CD8+ T cells%, demonstrated a high level of practicality in clinical settings. CD4+CD8+ T cells serve as a reliable and readily accessible predictor of AECOPD, exhibiting greater stability compared to other indices. It is less susceptible to subjective influences from patients or physicians. This model facilitated personalized estimations, enabling healthcare professionals to make informed decisions regarding preventive interventions.

Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua), an edible herbal medicine that possesses efficacies of dispersing wind, clearing heat and detoxifying. Studies have demonstrated that the health benefits of Chrysanthemi Flos are largely attributable to its anti-inflammatory effects. However, the correlation between the compounds monitored by the current quality control methods and the anti-inflammatory effects of Chrysanthemi Flos is unclear. In order to better control the quality of Chrysanthemi Flos, the identification of anti-inflammatory quality markers (Q-markers) of Chrysanthemi Flos was performed. The chemical components of Chrysanthemi Flos were profiled by HPLC fingerprints combined with chemometrics methods. Simultaneously, the anti-inflammatory activities of 10 batches of water extracts of Chrysanthemi Flos were evaluated in lipopolysaccharide-activated RAW 264.7 macrophages cells. Gray correlation analysis was performed to assess the relationship between the anti-inflammatory activity and chemical properties. The results showed that 13 common peaks were closely correlated with the anti-inflammatory effect, and further bioactivity re-evaluation confirmed that 10 known compounds exerted a strong anti-inflammatory effect. The quantitative analysis of the 10 Q-markers showed that the 25 batches of samples could be discriminated into different zones according to their producing areas. Conclusively, the present work identified 10 anti-inflammatory Q-markers of Chrysanthemi Flos using spectrum-effect relationships combined with bioactivity re-evaluation.

Biogenic collagen membranes (BCM) have been widely used in guided bone regeneration (GBR) owing to their biodegradability during tissue integration. However, their relatively high degradation rate and lack of pro-osteogenic properties limit their clinical outcomes. It is of great importance to endow BCM with tailored degradation as well as pro-osteogenic properties. In this study, a fluoride-modified polymer-induced liquid precursor (PILP) based biomineralization strategy was used to convert the collagen membrane from an organic phase to an apatite-based inorganic phase, thus achieving enhanced anti-degradation performance as well as osteogenesis. As a result, three phases of collagen membranes were prepared. The original BCM in the organic phase induced the mildest inflammatory response and was mostly degraded after 4 weeks. The organic-inorganic mixture phase of the collagen membrane evoked a prominent inflammatory response owing to the fluoride-containing amorphous calcium phosphate (F-ACP) nanoparticles, resulting in active angiogenesis and fibrous encapsulation, whereas the inorganic phase induced a mild inflammatory response and degraded the least owing to the transition of F-ACP particles into calcium phosphate with high crystallinity. Effective control of ACP is key to building novel apatite-based barrier membranes. The current results may pave the way for the development of advanced apatite-based membranes with enhanced barrier performances.

Via two reading experiments, this exploratory study examined the effects of over-and under-specified linguistic input on L2 online processing of Chinese referring expressions (REs). In each experiment, a group of advanced L2 Chinese speakers (all with Uyghurs as L1) and a control group of native Chinese speakers read 48 sets of 4 sentence pairs with each set including one sentence pair containing referential underspecification (ambiguity) and one pair containing overspecification (redundancy). An analysis of the two groups' reaction time (RT) using mixed-effects linear modelling reveals that underspecification had no effect on native Chinese speakers in both experiments, and overspecification also had no effect in the form of a redundant size noun modifier in Experiment 1 but showed a facilitating effect in the form of a color noun modifier in Experiment 2. In contrast, L2 Chinese speakers were significantly disrupted by underspecification in both experiments but not by overspecification. The results seem to support the hypothesis that L2 processing is constraint-based. Tentative research and pedagogical implications of the findings are discussed.

Bacteria in the genus Arthrobacter have been found in extreme environments, e.g. glaciers, brine and mural paintings. Here, we report the discovery of a novel pink-coloured bacterium, strain QL17T, capable of producing an extracellular water-soluble blue pigment. The bacterium was isolated from the soil of the East Rongbuk Glacier of Mt. Everest, China. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain QL17T was most closely related to the species Arthrobacter bussei KR32 T. However, compared to A.bussei KR32T and the next closest relatives, the new species demonstrates considerable phylogenetic distance at the whole-genome level, with an average nucleotide identity of <85 % and inferred DNA-DNA hybridization of <30 %. Polyphasic taxonomy results support our conclusion that strain QL17T represents a novel species of the genus Arthrobacter. Strain QL17T had the highest tolerance to hydrogen peroxide at 400 mM. Whole-genome sequencing of strain QL17T revealed the presence of numerous cold-adaptation, antioxidation and UV resistance-associated genes, which are related to adaptation to the extreme environment of Mt. Everest. Results of this study characterized a novel psychrotolerant Arthrobacter species, for which the name Arthrobacter antioxidans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is QL17T (GDMCC 1.2948T=JCM 35246T).

We described the comprehensive synthesis, characterization, and catalytic performance of a novel type of the ordered cubic Ia3̅d supermicroporous silicas by using tetraethyl orthosilicate as a silicon source and a hydroxyl-functionalized quaternary ammonium salt as a template under alkali conditions. The effects of various reaction conditions on the pore structure and morphology of the silica materials were thoroughly investigated. Our results showed that under a wide range of reaction conditions, supermicroporous silicas with a highly ordered cubic Ia3̅d structure can be produced with a large BET specific surface area of 1741 m2/g, high pore volume of 0.91 cm3/g, concentrated pore size at 19.1 Å, and crystalline morphology. After Al doping, the obtained aluminosilicates preserved a highly ordered cubic supermicroporous structure. By using the H-form aluminosilicates as catalysts, we selectively dimerized ß-pinene. The catalysts exhibited an excellent catalytic activity for ß-pinene dimerization with a conversion yield up to 100%. Compared with conventional mesoporous H-form Al-MCM-48 catalysts, the prepared supermicroporous catalysts exhibited superior catalytic performance due to their excellent shape-selective properties, producing the ß-pinene dimer in a yield up to 72.4% with dimer/oligomer ratios in the range of 7.5-10.1. This study featured a detailed preparation and characterization of supermicroporous silica with novel microstructures and showed its utility in catalytic dimerization.

BACKGROUND: This study was performed to investigate clinical features of patients with severe SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia and identify risk factors for converting to severe cases in those who had mild to moderate diseases at the start of the pandemic in China. METHODS: In this retrospective, multicenter cohort study, patients with mild to moderate SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia were included. Demographic data, symptoms, laboratory values, and clinical outcomes were collected. Data were compared between non-severe and severe patients. RESULTS: 58 patients were included in the final analysis. Compared with non-severe cases, severe patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia had a longer: time to clinical recovery (12·9 ± 4·4 vs 8·3 ± 4·7; P = 0·0011), duration of viral shedding (15·7 ± 6·7 vs 11·8 ± 5·0; P = 0·0183), and hospital stay (20·7 ± 1·2 vs 14·4 ± 4·3; P = 0·0211). Multivariate logistic regression indicated that lymphocyte count was significantly associated with the rate of converting to severe cases (odds ratio 1·28, 95%CI 1·06-1·54, per 0·1 ×  109/L reduced; P = 0·007), while using of low-to-moderate doses of systematic corticosteroids was associated with reduced likelihood of converting to a severe case (odds ratio 0·14, 95%CI 0·02-0·80; P = 0·0275). CONCLUSIONS: The low peripheral blood lymphocyte count was an independent risk factor for SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia patients converting to severe cases. However, this study was carried out right after the start of the pandemic with small sample size. Further prospective studies are warranted to confirm these findings. The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based Bistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is getting more and more attention in remote sensing for its all-weather and real-time global observation capability. Its low range resolution results from the narrow signal bandwidth limits in its development. The configuration difference caused by the illumination angle and movement direction of the different satellites makes it possible to improve resolution by multi-satellite fusion. However, this also introduces new problems with the resolution-enhancing efficiency and increased computation brought about by the fusion. In this paper, we aim at effectively improving the resolution of the multi-satellite fusion system. To this purpose, firstly, the Point Spread Function (PSF) of the multi-satellite fusion system is analyzed, and focusing on the relationship between the fusion resolution and the geometric configuration and the number of satellites. Numerical simulation results show that, compared with multi-satellite fusion, dual-satellite fusion is a combination with higher resolution enhancement efficiency. Secondly, a method for dual-satellite fusion imaging based on optimized satellite selection is proposed. With the greedy algorithm, the selection is divided into two steps: in the first step, according to geometry configuration, the single-satellite with the optimal 2-D resolution is selected as the reference satellite; in the second step, the angles between the azimuthal vector of the reference satellite and the azimuthal vector of the other satellites were calculated by the traversal method, the satellite corresponding to the intersection angle which is closest to 90° is selected as the auxiliary satellite. The fused image was obtained by non-coherent addition of the images generated by the reference satellite and the auxiliary satellite, respectively. Finally, the GPS L1 real orbit multi-target simulation and experimental validation were conducted, respectively. The simulation results show that the 2-D resolution of the images produced by our proposed method is globally optimal 15 times and suboptimal 8 times out of 24 data sets. The experimental results show that the 2-D resolution of our proposed method is optimal in the scene, and the area of the resolution unit is reduced by 70.1% compared to the single-satellite's images. In the experiment, there are three navigation satellites for imaging, the time taken to the proposed method was 66.6% that of the traversal method. Simulations and experiments fully demonstrate the feasibility of the method.

The construction of well-defined lanthanide complexes emitting in both the visible and near-infrared regions is of great importance due to their widespread applications in phosphors, light-emitting diodes, biosensors/probes, optical communications, etc. In comparison to the well-known mononuclear and dinuclear lanthanide complexes, multinuclear lanthanide supramolecular edifices with bright luminescence are still scarce. Herein, we report the coordination self-assembly of strongly luminescent lanthanide-organic tetrahedral Ln4L4 cages with a series of tris(tridentate) ligands based on the triazole chelates. Among them, the new ligand L3 with triazole-pyridine-triazole (TPT) chelates manifests an excellent sensitization toward all of the lanthanide ions (Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb) that emit in both the visible and near-infrared regions, with a record luminescent quantum yield for Tb4(L3)4 (Φ = 82%) being obtained. In contrast, ligands with amido-pyridine-triazole (APT) or TPA chelates show much weaker sensitization ability. Energy levels for all ligands were measured, and TD-DFT calculations were employed to shed light on the sensitization mechanism. Finally, white-light emission systems formed by combining the desired luminescent compounds have been demonstrated. Our strongly luminescent LOPs provide new candidates for photochemical supramolecular devices.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the 5-year clinical and radiologic outcome of immediate implantation using submerged and nonsubmerged techniques with bone-level implants and internal hexagonal connections and the effects of potential influencing factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 114 bone-level implants (XiVE S plus) with internal hexagonal connections inserted into 72 patients were included. Patients were followed up for 5 years. A t-test was used to statistically evaluate the marginal bone loss between the submerged and nonsubmerged groups. The cumulative survival rate (CSR) was calculated according to the life table method and illustrated with Kaplan-Meier survival curves. Comparisons of the CSR between healing protocols, guided bone regeneration, implants with different sites, lengths, and diameters were performed using log-rank tests. RESULTS: The 5-year cumulative implant survival rates with submerged and nonsubmerged healing were 94% and 96%, respectively. No statistically significant differences in terms of marginal bone loss, healing protocol, application of guided bone regeneration, implant site, or length were observed. CONCLUSIONS: High CSRs and good marginal bone levels were achieved 5 years after immediate implantation of bone-level implants with internal hexagonal connections using both the submerged and nonsubmerged techniques. Factors such as implant length, site, and application of guided bone regeneration did not have an impact on the long-term success of the implants.

Transparent and flexible devices based on two-dimensional (2D) materials hold great potential for many electronic/optoelectronic applications. The direct and fast thickness identification of 2D materials on transparent substrates is therefore an essential step in such applications, but remains challenging. Here, we present a simple, rapid and reliable optical method to identify the thickness of 2D nanosheets on transparent substrates, such as polydimethylsiloxane, glass, and coverslip. Under reflection and transmission light, 1-20L MoS2 and 1-14L WSe2 nanosheets can be reliably identified by measuring the optical contrast difference between the 2D nanosheets and substrates in color, red, green or blue channels. Meanwhile, the values of all the measured contrast differences as a function of layer number can be well fitted with the Boltzmann function, indicating the generalizability and reliability of our optical method. Our method will not only facilitate the fundamental study of the thickness-dependent properties of 2D nanosheets, but will also expand their potential applications in the field of flexible/transparent electronics and optoelectronics.

The biomimetic remineralization of apatite-depleted dentin is a potential method for enhancing the durability of resin-dentin bonding. To advance this strategy from its initial proof-of-concept design, we sought to investigate the characteristics of polyacrylic acid (PAA) adsorption to desorption from type I collagen and to test the mineralization ability of PAA-bound collagen. Portland cement and ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) were homogenized with a hydrophilic resin blend to produce experimental resins. The collagen fibrils reconstituted on nickel (Ni) grids were mineralized using different methods: (i) group I consisted of collagen treated with Portland cement-based resin in simulated body fluid (SBF); (ii) group II consisted of PAA-bound collagen treated with Portland cement-based resin in SBF; and (iii) group III consisted of PAA-bound collagen treated with ß-TCP-doped Portland cement-based resin in deionized water. Intrafibrillar mineralization was evaluated using transmission electron microscopy. We found that a carbonyl-associated peak at pH 3.0 increased as adsorption time increased, whereas a hydrogen bond-associated peak increased as desorption time increased. The experimental resins maintained an alkaline pH and the continuous release of calcium ions. Apatite was detected within PAA-bound collagen in groups II and III. Our results suggest that PAA-bound type I collagen fibrils can be mineralized using Portland cement-based resins.

Previous research has indicated that, in viewing a visual word, the activated phonological representation in turn activates its homophone, causing semantic interference. Using this mechanism of phonological mediation, this study investigated native-language phonological interference in visual recognition of Chinese two-character compounds by early Hakka-Mandarin bilinguals. A visual semantic-relatedness decision task in Chinese was given to native Mandarin speakers and early Hakka-Mandarin bilinguals. Both participant groups made more false positive errors and responded more slowly to the pair of two-character compounds containing a homophone; but only Hakka-Mandarin bilinguals made more false positive errors and responded more slowly to the pair containing a near-homophone. We concluded that phonology is needed in both native and nonnative speakers' meaning access of Chinese two-character compounds and that native-language phonological interference is universal in L2 visual word recognition, not language type dependent; phonological and orthographic information are "interactive-compensatory" in helping Hakka readers' resolve the interference.

Using a cross-modal priming task, the present study explores whether Chinese-English bilinguals process goal related information during auditory comprehension of English narratives like native speakers. Results indicate that English native speakers adopted both mechanisms of suppression and enhancement to modulate the activation of goals and keep track of the "causal path" in narrative events and that L1 speakers with higher working memory (WM) capacity are more skilled at attenuating interference. L2 speakers, however, experienced the phenomenon of "facilitation-without-inhibition." Their difficulty in suppressing irrelevant information was related to their performance in the test of working memory capacity. For the L2 group with greater working memory capacity, the effects of both enhancement and suppression were found. These findings are discussed in light of a landscape model of L2 text comprehension which highlights the need for WM to be incorporated into comprehensive models of L2 processing as well as theories of SLA.
