OBJECTIVE: Fatty acids play a critical role in the proper functioning of the brain. This study investigated the effects of a high-fat (HF) diet on brain fatty acid profiles of offspring exposed to maternal gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS: Insulin receptor antagonist (S961) and HF diet were used to establish the GDM animal model. Brain fatty acid profiles of the offspring mice were measured by gas chromatography at weaning and adulthood. Protein expressions of the fatty acid transport pathway Wnt3/ß-catenin and the target protein major facilitator superfamily domain-containing 2a (MFSD2a) were measured in the offspring brain by Western blot. RESULTS: Maternal GDM increased the body weight of male offspring (P < 0.05). In weaning offspring, factorial analysis showed that maternal GDM increased the monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) percentage of the weaning offspring's brain (P < 0.05). Maternal GDM decreased offspring brain arachidonic acid (AA), but HF diet increased brain linoleic acid (LA) (P < 0.05). Maternal GDM and HF diet reduced offspring brain docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and the male offspring had higher DHA than the female offspring (P < 0.05). In adult offspring, factorial analysis showed that HF diet increased brain MUFA in offspring, and male offspring had higher brain MUFA than female offspring (P < 0.05). The HF diet increased brain LA in the offspring. Male offspring had higher level of AA than female offspring (P < 0.05). HF diet reduced DHA in the brains of female offspring. The brain protein expression of ß-catenin and MFSD2a in both weaning and adult female offspring was lower in the HF + GDM group than in the CON group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Maternal GDM increased the susceptibility of male offspring to HF diet-induced obesity. HF diet-induced adverse brain fatty acid profiles in both male and female offspring exposed to GDM.

INTRODUCTION: Frailty is a complex geriatric syndrome with a multifaceted etiology. We aimed to identify the best combinations of risk factors that predict the development of frailty using recursive partitioning models. METHODS: We analyzed reports from 1,724 community-dwelling men and women aged 65-74 years participating in the International Mobility in Aging Study (IMIAS). Frailty was measured using frailty phenotype scale that included five physical components: unintentional weight loss, weakness, slow gait, exhaustion, and low physical activity. Frailty was defined as presenting three of the above five conditions, having one or two conditions indicated prefrailty and showing none as robust. Socio-demographic, physical, lifestyle, psycho-social, and life-course factors were included in the analysis as potential predictors. RESULTS: 21% of pre-frail and robust participants showed a worse stage of frailty in 2014 compared to 2012. In addition to functioning variables, fear of falling (FOF), income, and research site (Canada vs. Latin America vs. Albania) were significant predictors of the development of frailty. Additional significant predictors after exclusion of functioning factors included education, self-rated health, and BMI. CONCLUSIONS: In addition to obvious risk factors for frailty (such as functioning), socio-economic factors and FOFs are also important predictors. Clinical assessment of frailty should include measurement of these factors to identify high-risk individuals.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the predictive value of two diagnostic criteria for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants with gestational age (GA) < 32 weeks for death or severe respiratory morbidity at corrected age of 18-24 months. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, clinical data from July 2019 to September 2021 were classified by 2018 National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and 2019 Jensen definitions of BPD. Based on the follow-up results, the enrolled population was divided into adverse outcome group and normal outcome group. Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were conducted to explore the risk factors of adverse outcomes and evaluate the predictive value of both diagnostic criteria. RESULTS: Of 451 infants, 141 (31.3%) had adverse outcomes, which increased with increasing severity of BPD. Logistic regression analysis showed only BPD was an independent risk factor for adverse outcomes in preterm infants. ROC analysis revealed that both diagnostic criteria showed similar predictive values (2018 NICHD definition AUC = 0.771 vs. 2019 Jensen definition AUC = 0.770), with specificities of 93.5% and 96.8%, respectively; however, combining them separately with GA or birth weight did not improve their predictive values. CONCLUSIONS: The two novel definitions of BPD demonstrate similar predictive values in predicting death or severe respiratory morbidity at corrected age of 18-24 months, with higher specificity observed in both.

INTRODUCTION: Culturally relevant physical activity is a promising field for chronic disease prevention and management. Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders have higher rates of physical inactivity than other racial or ethnic groups and increased risk of chronic disease. The study objective was to provide population-level data from Hawai'i on lifetime experiences in the Native Hawaiian Indigenous practices of hula and outrigger canoe paddling across demographic and health factors to identify opportunities for public health intervention, engagement, and surveillance. METHODS: Questions about hula and paddling were added to the Hawai'i 2018 and 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (N = 13,548). We considered level of engagement by demographic categories and health status indicators, accounting for the complex survey design. RESULTS: Overall, 24.5% of adults engaged in hula and 19.8% in paddling in their lifetime. Prevalence of engagement was higher among Native Hawaiians (48.8% hula, 41.5% paddling) and Other Pacific Islanders (35.3% hula, 31.1% paddling) than among other racial and ethnic groups. In adjusted rate ratios, experience in these activities was strong across age groups, education, sex, and income levels, particularly among Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders. CONCLUSION: Throughout Hawai'i, hula and outrigger canoe paddling are important and popular cultural practices with high physical activity demands. Participation was notably high for Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders. Surveillance information around culturally relevant physical activities can benefit public health programming and research from a strength-based community perspective.

Pesticide pollution is one of the most important factors for global bee declines. Despite many studies have revealed that the most important Chinese indigenous species,Apis cerana, is presenting a high risk on exposure to neonicotinoids, the toxicology information on Apis cerana remain limited. This study was aimed to determine the acute and chronic toxic effects of thiacloprid (IUPAC name: {(2Z)-3-[(6-Chloro-3-pyridinyl)methyl]-1,3-thiazolidin-2-ylidene}cyanamide) on behavioral and physiological performance as well as genome-wide transcriptome in A. cerana. We found the 1/5 LC50 of thiacloprid significantly impaired learning and memory abilities after both acute and chronic exposure, nevertheless, has no effects on the sucrose responsiveness and phototaxis climbing ability of A. cerana. Moreover, activities of detoxification enzyme P450 monooxygenases and CarE were increased by short-term exposure to thiacloprid, while prolonged exposure caused suppression of CarE activity. Neither acute nor chronic exposure to thiacloprid altered honey bee AChE activities. To further study the potential defense molecular mechanisms in Asian honey bee under pesticide stress, we analyzed the transcriptomes of honeybees in response to thiacloprid stress. The transcriptomic profiles revealed consistent upregulation of immune- and stress-related genes by both acute or chronic treatments. Our results suggest that the chronic exposure to thiacloprid produced greater toxic effects than a single administration to A. cerana. Altogether, our study deepens the understanding of the toxicological characteristic of A. cerana against thiacloprid, and could be used to further investigate the complex molecular mechanisms in Asian honey bee under pesticide stress.

Resistance training is employed for pursuing muscle strength characterized by activation of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)-mediated hypertrophic signaling for protein production. Endurance training elevates peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator 1α (PGC-1α) signaling of mitochondrial adaptations for oxidative phosphorylation. Now, emerging evidence suggests that, like endurance training, resistance training also elicits profound effects on mitochondrial adaptations in skeletal muscle, which means that resistance training yields both strength and endurance phenotypes in myofibers, which has treatment value for the muscle loss and poor aerobic capacity in humans. Our review outlines a brief overview of muscle hypertrophic signals with resistance training, and focuses on the effects of resistance training on mitochondrial biogenesis and respiration in skeletal muscle. This study provides novel insights into the therapeutic strategy of resistance training for the metabolically dysfunctional individuals with declined mitochondrial function.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of ultrasonography-guided needle release of A1 pulley combined with corticosteroid injection by comparing it with ultrasound-guided needle release of the A1 pulley alone. METHODS: A total of 49 patients (55 fingers, thumb) with trigger fingers were included in this retrospective study. Twenty-seven fingers were treated with ultrasound-guided needle release of the A1 pulley alone (monotherapy group), and 28 fingers were treated with needle release of the A1 pulley combined with corticosteroid injection (combination group). Visual analog scale (VAS), Froimson scale, postoperative recurrence rate, and thickness of A1 pulley at baseline, Week-2, Week-12, and Month-6 were recorded. RESULTS: Higher clinical cure rates were observed in the combination group at Week-2 after treatment among patients with the Froimson scale Grade III and IV (p < 0.05). Among Froimson scale Grade IV patients, the combination group had a significantly thinner thickness of A1 pulley and better articular pain relief at Week-2 (all p < 0.05). No significant differences were found in the clinical cure rate, the thickness of the A1 pulley, articular pain relief, and recurrence rate between the two groups at Week-12 and Month-6 (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasonography-guided needle release of A1 pulley plus corticosteroid injection was superior to ultrasonography-guided A1 pulley needle release alone during early-stage treatment of severe patients with trigger fingers. Moreover, ultrasonography-guided A1 pulley needle release combined with corticosteroid injection narrows the thickness of the A1 pulley. It is necessary to carry out preoperative evaluation and individualized treatment for patients of various severities.

BACKGROUND: Probiotics exhibit antibiotic properties and are capable of treating certain bacterial infections, including diarrhea. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with multispecies probiotic (MSP) on diarrhea, average daily gain (ADG) and intestinal development of neonatal calves challenged with Escherichia coli K99. RESULTS: Thirty-six neonatal Holstein calves were randomly assigned to three treatment groups. After E. coli K99 challenge, calves in the control (C) and MSP treatment groups had significantly higher ADG and feed efficiency, and significantly lower fecal scores than those of calves in the diarrhea (D) group. The mean time of diarrhea resolution was 4.5 and 3.1 days for calves in the D and MSP treatment groups, respectively. Furthermore, the structures of the various segments (duodenum, jejunum and ileum) of the small intestine of the calves, activities of several small intestinal enzymes, and expression of several energy metabolism-related genes in the small intestine segments were significantly affected by MSP treatments. CONCLUSION: Dietary supplementation of MSP had a positive effect in treating calf diarrhea; it improved ADG and feed efficiency and promoted development of the small intestine. © 2022 The Authors. Similar to the nation's majority and racial/ethnic minority populations, Native Hawaiian families provide the bulk of care to loved ones with dementia. Limited research has focused on youth caregivers, who are largely invisible to the eldercare service system. This knowledge gap is especially critical for Native Hawaiians who place a high value on eldercare, often provided in multigenerational homes. To address this gap, we describe the process by which a university-community center developed a culturally responsive storybook on dementia targeted to Native Hawaiian youth. The development process honored community-based participatory research principles grounded in the cultural values and practices of Native Hawaiians, active collaboration of an advisory council, and face-to-face engagement with Native Hawaiian youth. Future directions are shared about culture-based programming and evaluation in dementia care that may be useful in work with other racial/ethnic youth and families.

Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander (NHPI) older adults experience various social and health challenges. There is a growing literature linking neighborhood conditions with health, yet few have focused on NHPI older adults. This study examines associations between neighborhood social cohesion and health outcomes (i.e., self-rated health, psychological distress, and memory) in this population. Data from the 2014 Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander National Health Interview Survey (n=1,045 with respondents aged 50+) were analyzed with logistic regression models. The level of neighborhood social cohesion was determined by responses to items on perceptions of mutual help, dependability, trust, and close relationships within the neighborhood. Higher perceived neighborhood social cohesion was associated with lower odds of having serious psychological distress or memory problems. There was no statistical association of social cohesion with self-rated health. Socially cohesive neighborhoods are important to the health of NHPI. We discuss methods to improve neighborhood social cohesion as a way to promote health equity for NHPI older adults in the United States (U.S.).

Flavonoid-rich foods have shown a beneficial effect against non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in short-term randomised trials. It is uncertain whether the usual dietary intake of flavonoids may benefit patients with NAFLD. The present study evaluated the association between the usual intake of flavonoids and the risk of progression in NAFLD. The prospective study included 2694 adults from the Guangzhou Nutrition and Health Study. Face-to-face interviews using a seventy-nine-item FFQ were administered to assess habitual dietary flavonoid intake, while abdominal ultrasonography was conducted to evaluate the presence and degree of NAFLD, with measurements conducted 3 years apart. After adjustment for potential confounders, higher flavonoid intakes were gradely associated with reduced risks of worsen NAFLD status. The relative risks of worsening (v. non-worsening) NAFLD in the highest (v. lowest) quintile were 0·71 (95 % CI 0·54, 0·93) for total flavonoids, 0·74 (95 % CI 0·57, 0·95) for flavanones, 0·74 (95 % CI 0·56, 0·96) for flavan-3-ols, 0·90 (95 % CI 0·68, 1·18) for flavonols, 0·73 (95 % CI 0·56, 0·93) for flavones, 0·79 (95 % CI 0·61, 1·02) for isoflavones and 0·74 (95 % CI 0·57, 0·96) for anthocyanins. An L-shaped relationship was observed between total flavonoid intake and the risk of NAFLD progression. Path analyses showed that the association between flavonoids and NAFLD progression was mediated by decreases in serum cholesterol and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance. This prospective study showed that higher flavonoid intake was associated with a lower risk of NAFLD progression in the elderly overweight/obese Chinese population.

Foraging is essential for honey bee colony fitness and is enhanced by the waggle dance, a recruitment behavior in which bees can communicate food location and quality. We tested if the consumption of nectar (sucrose solution) with a field-realistic concentration of 4 ppm flupyradifurone (FPF) could alter foraging behavior and recruitment dancing in Apis mellifera. Foragers were repelled by FPF. They visited the FPF feeder less often and spent less time imbibing sucrose solution (2.5 M, 65% w/w) with FPF. As a result, bees feeding on the FPF treatment consumed 16% less nectar. However, FPF did not affect dancing: there were no effects on unloading wait time, the number of dance bouts per nest visit, or the number of dance circuits performed per dance bout. FPF could therefore deter bees from foraging on contaminated nectar. However, the willingness of bees to recruit nestmates for nectar with FPF is concerning. Recruitment can rapidly amplify the number of foragers and could overcome the decrease in consumption of FPF-contaminated nectar, resulting in a net inflow of pesticide to the colony. FPF also significantly altered the expression of 116 genes, some of which may be relevant for the olfactory learning deficits induced by FPF and the toxicity of FPF.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have indicated high cholesterol is paradoxically associated with low prevalence of atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF). However, the etiology is uncertain. One potential explanation might be the confounding effect of age exemplifying prevalence-incidence (Neyman's) bias. However, this bias has not often been discussed in depth in the literature. Therefore, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis to test the hypothesis that there is a paradoxical association between lipid profile and AF prevalence. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study design, using data from the Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program. Participants were 3741 Japanese-American men between 71 and 93 years old living in Hawaii. Serum total cholesterol (TC) level was measured and categorized into quartiles. AF was diagnosed by 12­lead Electrocardiogram. We categorized age into quartiles (71-74, 75-77, 78-80 and 81+ years). RESULTS: We observed opposite associations between AF and TC among different age groups. For participants age ≥75, higher TC levels were paradoxically associated with lower prevalence of AF after multivariable adjustment, i.e. the odds ratios of AF comparing the highest TC quartile with the lowest TC quartile for age 75-77, 78-80 and 81+ years were 0.17 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.06-0.52), 0.28 (95% CI, 0.07-1.09) and 0.14 (95% CI, 0.03-0.62), respectively. Conversely, for those who were 71-74 years old, the odds ratio of AF was 2.09 (95% CI, 0.76-5.75) between the highest and the lowest TC quartiles. CONCLUSIONS: There is a paradoxical association of TC with AF in Japanese-American men age ≥75, but not <75 years. The paradox might be explained by Neyman's bias.

To explore the influence of sexuality-related factors on recent two-week morbidity and annual hospitalization in female migrant workers, 880 Chinese rural-to-urban female migrant workers aged 16-57 years were studied. Clustered logistic regression analyses revealed that women who never or seldom experienced lubrication difficulties had a lower risk of recent two-week morbidity (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 0.32, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.17-0.60, P< 0.001; adjusted OR = 0.35, 95% CI = 0.18-0.69, P= 0.003) than those who always experienced lubrication difficulties; women who never felt a lack of sexual interest had a significantly lower risk of annual hospitalization (adjusted OR = 0.40, 95% CI = 0.20-0.79, P= 0.009) than those who always or seldom lacked sexual interest, and women who never felt sexual satisfaction had a higher risk of annual hospitalization (adjusted OR = 3.08, 95% CI = 1.75-5.42, P< 0.001) than those who always or seldom experienced sexual satisfaction. The independent contributions of sexuality-related factors to the risk of recent two-week morbidity and annual hospitalization were 5.8% and 29.5%, respectively. This study suggests that sexuality may have a modest influence on recent two-week morbidity and a dominant impact on annual hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: Gene-obesogenic environment interactions influence body mass index (BMI) across the life course; however, limited research examines how these interactions may differ by race and sex. METHODS: Utilizing mixed-effects models, we examined the interaction effects of a polygenic risk score (PGS) generated from BMI-associated single-nucleotide polymorphisms, and environmental factors, including age, physical activity, alcohol intake, and childhood socioeconomic status on measured longitudinal BMI from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). HRS is a population representative survey of older adults in the United States. This study used a subsample of genotyped Black (N = 1796) and White (N = 4925) men and women (50-70 years) with measured BMI. RESULTS: Higher PGS was associated with higher BMI. The association between PGS and BMI weakened as individuals aged among White men (Pinteraction = 0.0383) and White women (Pinteraction = 0.0514). The mean BMI difference between the 90th and 10th PGS percentile was 4.25 kg/m2 among 50-year-old White men, and 3.11 kg/m2 among the 70 years old's, i.e., a 1.14 kg/m2 (95% CI: -0.27, 2.82) difference. The difference among 50- and 70-year-old White women was 1.34 kg/m2 (95% CI: 0.09, 2.60). In addition, the protection effect of physical activity was stronger among White women with higher PGS (Pinteraction = 0.0546). Vigorous physical activity (compared with never) was associated with 1.66 kg/m2 (95% CI: 1.06, 2.29) lower mean BMI among those in the 90th PGS percentile, compared with 0.83 kg/m2 (95% CI: 0.37, 1.29) lower among those in the 10th PGS percentile. Interactions were also observed between both PGS and alcohol intake among White men (Pinteraction = 0.0034) and women (Pinteraction = 0.0664) and Black women (Pinteraction = 0.0108), and PGS and childhood socioeconomic status among White women (Pinteraction = 0.0007). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings reinforce the importance of physical activity among those with an elevated genetic risk; additionally, other detected interactions may underscore the influence of broader social environments on obesity-promoting genes.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported that high-dose supplementation of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) may reduce the risk of metabolic diseases, but there is limited evidence of an effect on body fat. We examined the associations of erythrocyte n-3 PUFAs with body fat and fat distribution in a general population consuming a normal diet. METHODS: This community-based cross-sectional study included 3075 Chinese (68% women, 40-75 years) recruited between 2008 and 2013. We collected general information and measured anthropometric indices; erythrocyte n-3 PUFAs (including α-C18:3, C20:5, C22:5 and C22:6) by gas-chromatography, and fat mass (FM) and %FM at the total body (TB), android (A) and gynoid (G) regions by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). RESULTS: Both minimally and maximally adjusted models showed dose-dependent inverse associations of total and individual levels of erythrocyte n-3 PUFAs (except C20:5 n-3[EPA]) with adiposity indices. In the full model, the mean differences between quartiles 4 and 1 of total n-3 PUFAs were -1.60% (BMI), -4.06% (TB FM), -5.38% (A FM), -2.05% (G FM), -2.05% (TB %FM), -3.39% (A %FM) and -2.50% (% A/G); the ORs (95% CI) of %FM-derived obesity (≥25% for men, ≥35% for women) for the highest (vs. lowest) quartile were 0.70 (0.57, 0.86) for total n-3 PUFAs and 0.71 (0.58, 0.87), 0.96(0.78, 1.18), 0.82(0.67, 1.00), 0.66 (0.54, 0.81) for α-C18:3/C20:5/C22:5/C22:6 n-3, respectively. The favourable associations were more pronounced for the DXA-derived FM indices, measurements at the android region and for C22:6 n-3. No significant associations between C20:5 n-3 and the adiposity indices were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Higher levels of circulating n-3 PUFAs were dose-dependently associated with better profiles of body fat and fat distribution, particularly in the abdominal regions in this population.

We aimed to detect the MYD88L265P and CXCR4S338X mutations in cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in patients with Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM). We collected peripheral blood and paired bone marrow aspirates from 27 WM patients (including 16 patients with newly diagnosed WM, 3 patients with WM in relapse and 8 patients with WM during treatment). cfDNA was extracted from peripheral blood using a QIAamp Circulating Nucleic Acid Kit. The MYD88L265P and CXCR4S338X mutations were detected by real-time allele-specific PCR (AS-PCR) in cfDNA and genomic DNA (gDNA) extracted from bone marrow aspirates. The sensitivity of real-time AS-PCR for detecting MYD88L265P in cfDNA was determined using a serial dilution of 10%, 2%, 0.4% and 0.08% MYD88L265P cfDNA in wild-type cfDNA. Among the 27 patients, MYD88L265P was detected in 88.9% of them in gDNA and in 85.2% of them in cfDNA, with a concordance rate of 96.3%. The concordance rates were 93.8%, 100% and 100% in patients with newly diagnosed WM, patients with WM in relapse and patients with WM during treatment, respectively. The sensitivity of real-time AS-PCR for detecting MYD88L265P in cfDNA was 0.4%. CXCR4S338X was detected in 6.3% of the 16 newly diagnosed WM patients in both gDNA and cfDNA, with a concordance rate of 100.0%. It is feasible to apply cfDNA to detect MYD88L265P and CXCR4S338X in WM patients with a high concordance rate.

Glutamate decarboxylase (GAD, EC 4.1.1.15) is an important enzyme in gamma-aminobutyric acid biosynthesis and DL-glutamic acid resolution. In this study, the Enterococcus faecium-derived GAD was successfully immobilized by regenerated chitin (RC) via specific adsorption of cellulose-binding domain (CBD). The optimal binding buffer was 20 mmol/L phosphate buffer saline (pH 8.0), and the RC binding capacity was 1.77 ± 0.11 mgcbd-gad/grc under this condition. The ratio of wet RC and crude enzyme solution used for immobilization was recommended to 3:50 (g/mL). To evaluate the effect of RC immobilization on GAD, properties of the immobilize GAD (RC-CBD-GAD) were investigated. Results indicated RC-CBD-GAD was relatively stable at pH 4.4-5.6 and temperature - 20-40 °C, and the optimal reaction pH value and temperature were pH 4.8 and 50 °C, respectively. When it was reacted with 5 mmol/L of follow chemical reagents respectively, the activity of RC-CBD-GAD was hardly affected by EDTA, KCl, and NaCl, and significantly inactivated by AgNO3, MnSO4, MgSO4, CuSO4, ZnSO4, FeCl2, FeCl3, AlCl3, CaCl2, and Pb(CH3COO)2. The apparent Km and Vmax were 28.35 mmol/L and 147.06 µmol/(gRC-CBD-GAD·min), respectively. The optimum time for a batch of catalytic reaction without exogenous pH control was 2 h. Under this reaction time, RC-CBD-GAD had a good reusability with a half-life of 23 cycles, indicating that it was very attractive for GABA industry. As a novel, efficient, and green CBD binding carrier, RC provides an alternative way to protein immobilization.

INTRODUCTION: While several studies have indicated that central sleep apnea (CSA) is associated with atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter (AF) in older populations, few studies have focused on older Asian populations. METHODS: We conducted a cross- sectional analysis using data from the 1999-2000, 7th exam cycle of the Kuakini Honolulu-Asia Aging Study. Participants were 718 Japanese-American men between 79 and 97 years old, who had overnight polysomnography. Obstructive Apnea-Hypopnea Index (OAHI) was the measure of the number of obstructive apneas and hypopneas with >4% oxygen desaturation. Additionally, the Central Apnea Index (CAI) was the measure of the number of central apneas. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was categorized as none (OAHI <5), mild (OAHI 5-14), moderate (OAHI 15-29) and severe (OAHI ≥30). CSA was defined by CAI of 5 or more. Cheyne-Stokes Breathing (CSB) was defined as a minimum consecutive 5-minute period of a crescendo-decrescendo respiratory pattern associated with CSA. RESULTS: AF prevalence was 5.5% (39 of 709). The prevalence proportions of severe OSA, CSA, and CSB were 20.2% (143 of 709), 6.4% (43 of 673) and 3.2% (22 of 673), respectively. In multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models, CSA and CSB were significantly associated with AF prevalence: odds ratio (OR) 5.15, 95% confidential interval (CI), 2.21-12.52 and OR 6.26, 95% CI, 2.05-19.14, respectively. However, OSA was not significantly associated with AF prevalence. CONCLUSION: AF prevalence is associated with CSA and CSB but not OSA in older Japanese-American men. This information could help target AF prevention strategies in this population.

A series of bimetel organic framework MnxCu1-x-MOF were prepared. The MOFs was characterized and analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The catalytic activity of the developed catalyst was tested on various olefins by H2O2 as oxidant. The MOFs catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity for the epoxidations of various aromatic and cyclic olefins. Particularly, Mn0.1Cu0.9-MOF can achieve 90.2% conversion of styrene with 94.3% selectivity of styrene oxide at 0 °C after reaction 6 h. The MOF exhibited the catalytic activity of inverse temperature effect on epoxidation of styrene. The introduction of copper component can stabilize H2O2 and inhibit its decomposition to a certain extent. The catalyst can be reused at least five cycles without significant loss in activity towards epoxidation.
