RESUMEN

We aimed to investigate the change patterns in corneal sub-basal nerve morphology and corneal intrinsic aberrations in dry eye disease (DED). Our study included 229 eyes of 155 patients with DED and 40 eyes of 20 healthy control. We used the Oculus keratograph and the ocular surface disease index questionnaire to assess their signs and symptoms. In vivo confocal microscopy was used to observe the corneal sub-basal nerves, corneal endothelial cells, and Langerhans cells (LCs). An artificial intelligence (AI) technique run by the deep learning model generated the sub-basal nerve fibre parameters. Furthermore, we used the Pentacam HR system to measure the corneal intrinsic aberrations and corneal surface regularity indices. DED patients more frequently had increased anterior and total corneal aberrations than controls (P < 0.05). In addition, DED had decreased average density and maximum length of corneal nerve. (Both P < 0.01) The LC number was significantly correlated with maximum length (CC = -0.19, P = 0.01) of the sub-basal nerve fibre. Furthermore, the corneal nerve average density was negatively correlated with IHD, and anterior, posterior, and total corneal aberrations (All P < 0.05) especially the higher-order aberrations. Significant correlations were seen between corneal nerve morphology changes, analysed by AI and corneal intrinsic aberrations, particularly higher-order aberrations.

RESUMEN

Background: Eye movement plays an important role in visual perception and provides essential visual information for everyday tasks. Our previous study indicated that the visual performance and eye movement pattern were impaired in age-related cataract patients and could be improved after cataract surgery, but the impact of different intraocular lens (IOL) types was obscure. Previous studies found that blue light might affect the eye movement pattern and cognitive function. In this study, we explored the visual performance and eye movement pattern in post-cataract surgery patients implanted with blue light-filtering IOLs or ultraviolet (UV) light-filtering IOLs to further understand the impact of different types of IOLs on and daily visual performance and eye movement pattern and to help ophthalmologists and patients make the personalized option of IOL types in future. Methods: Patients after both-eye cataract surgeries were included in this study. Eye movement behaviors were automatically recorded by an eye tracker while performing three performance-based everyday tasks (non-social object search, face recognition, and reading). Visual performance and eye movement parameters were compared between participants with blue light-filtering IOLs and UV light-filtering IOLs. The correlation between visual performance and eye movement parameters was explored to determine which eye movement parameters had a significant influence on visual performance outcomes. Results: A total of 30 patients (16 with blue light-filtering IOLs and 14 with UV light-filtering IOLs) were included. In this study, we found that the eye movement pattern was slightly different with these two IOLs: during non-social object visual search task, time to first fixation and fixation counts before first fixation were notably increased in yellow-tinted blue light-filtering IOL patients. During reading task, a higher total fixation count was also found in blue light-filtering IOL patients. However, the visual performance of these two IOLs was close, except for a quicker search of the target object with clear UV light-filtering IOLs. Conclusion: Both blue light-filtering and UV light-filtering IOLs were able to successfully restore visual function and yield satisfactory outcomes after cataract surgery. Although subtle, yellow-tinted IOLs did have a slight but significant impact on visual performance and the eye movement pattern of elderly patients when handling everyday tasks.

RESUMEN

While biogenic Mn oxides (BioMnOx) generated by Mn(II)-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) have attracted increasing attention, a MOB strain isolated from Mn-polluted sediments was identified and assigned as Enterobacter hormaechei DS02Eh01. Its Mn(II) immobilization activity, plant growth-promoting traits, and biofilm formation capability were investigated. The results showed that strain DS02Eh01 was found to be able to tolerate Mn(II) up to 122 mM. The strain immobilized Mn(II) in aquatic media mainly through extracellular adsorption, bio-oxidation and pH-induced precipitation as well as manganese oxidation. DS02Eh01-derived BioMnOx are negatively charged and have a larger specific surface area (86.70 m2/g) compared to the previously reported BioMnOx. The strain can immobilize Mn(II) at extreme levels, for instance, when it was exposed to 20 mM Mn(II), about 59% of Mn(II) were found immobilized and 17% of Mn(II) were converted to MnOx. The SEM and TEM observation revealed that the DS02Eh01-derived BioMnOx were aggregates doped with granules and microbial pellets. The precipitated Mn(II) and the Mn(III)/Mn(IV) oxides co-existed in BioMnOx, in which Mn(II) and Mn(IV) were found dominant with Mn(II) accounting for 49.6% and Mn(IV) accounting for 41.3%. DS02Eh01 possesses plant growth-promoting traits and biofilm formation capacity even under Mn(II) exposure. Mn(II) exposure at 5 mM was found to stimulate strain DS02Eh01 to form biofilms, from which, the extracted EPS was mainly composed of aromatic proteins. This study reveals that E. hormaechei strain DS02Eh01 possesses the potential in environmental ecoremediation via coupling processes of macrophytes extraction, biochemical immobilization and biosorption.

RESUMEN

Purpose: To characterize the choroidal morphologic and vascular features in different levels of myopes and patients with myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV). Methods: A total of 148 subjects were enrolled in this cross-sectional study, including 78 low-to-moderate myopes (LMM), 53 high myopes (HM), and 17 high myopic patients with mCNV. Ocular biometrics were measured using an optical low-coherence reflectometry device. Retinal and choroidal imaging was performed using enhanced depth imaging (EDI) spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). Retinal parameters including retinal thickness and retinal volume were obtained from a built-in software. Binarization technique was adopted to investigate choroidal parameters including choroidal thickness (CT), vascular area, stromal area, and choroidal vascularity index (CVI). Choroidal parameters were measured at five locations to cover as much area of choroid as possible, and their patterns of distribution were further analyzed. Results: Patients with mCNV had an atrophic retina of comparable thickness to HM (273.65 ± 17.28 vs. 276.49 ± 13.29 µm, p = 0.47), but the choroid was thinner than that of HM (153.94 ± 15.12 vs. 236.09 ± 38.51 µm, p < 0.001). Subfoveal CVI was greatest in the mCNV eyes (0.651 ± 0.009), followed by HM (0.645 ± 0.012) and LMM eyes (0.636 ± 0.012). Similar to CT, CVI was also found significantly different among these three groups at all five locations (p for trend < 0.001 for all locations). Axial length (AL) was negatively correlated with retinal volume (r = -0.236, p = 0.009), which is the only significant finding in associations between ocular factors and retinal parameters. Strong, negative correlations were identified between AL and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT, r = -0.820, p < 0.001). However, AL was positively correlated with subfoveal CVI (r = 0.668, p < 0.001). CVI was greater in myopic eyes with thinner choroid (r = -0.578, p < 0.001). BCVA exhibited no significant association with CVI (r = 0.139, p = 0.092), but was negatively correlated with SFCT (r = -0.386, p < 0.001) and positively correlated with AL (r = 0.351, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Choroid in patients with mCNV was thinner yet more vascularized than that in HM and LMM subjects. CVI increased with a longer AL which was associated with a smaller SFCT, choroidal vascular area (VA), and total choroidal area (TCA). Better BCVA was achieved in subjects with thicker SFCT and shorter AL.
