BACKGROUND: Inpatient use of insulin pump therapy has been increasing due to greater availability of this technology, however there is a paucity of research that investigates glycemic control of inpatient insulin pump users. OBJECTIVE: To compare the glycemic control of hospitalized patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who used insulin pump vs. multiple daily injections (MDI). DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. PARTICIPANTS: Patients with T1D who were hospitalized between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2019, in an academic medical center in the New York metropolitan area. MAIN MEASURES: Patients were categorized into three groups based on their method of insulin administration: "pump only" group used insulin pump exclusively, "MDI only" group used MDI only, and "intermittent pump" group used a combination of both methods. The primary endpoints are mean blood glucose, rates of hypoglycemic events (blood glucose < 70 mg/dL), and rates of hyperglycemic events (blood glucose > 250 mg/dL). Separate multivariable Poisson regressions were performed to determine the association between the type of insulin administration and rate outcomes (i.e., rate of hypoglycemic events and rate of hyperglycemic events). RESULTS: The study included 78 patients with a mean age of 51, who were mostly male (54%), and white (72%). The average proportion of glucose measurements that were hyperglycemic for the "pump only", "MDI only", and "intermittent pump" groups were 0.11 (SD = 0.11), 0.25 (SD = 0.19), and 0.24 (SD = 0.25), respectively. The "pump only" group has a significantly lower proportion of hyperglycemic events as compared to the "MDI only" group (p = 0.0227). CONCLUSIONS: In this sample, patients who exclusively used their insulin pump while inpatient had a lower rate of hyperglycemic events than patients who used MDI only; suggesting that select patients can safely continue their insulin pump therapy in the inpatient setting.

Phosphor-in-glass represents a promising avenue for merging the luminous efficiency of high-quality phosphor and the thermal stability of a glass matrix. Undoubtedly, the glass matrix system and its preparation are pivotal factors in achieving high stability and preserving the original performance of embedded phosphor particles. In contrast to the well-established commercial Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ oxide phosphor, red nitride phosphor, which plays a critical role in high-quality lighting, exhibits greater structural instability during the high-temperature synthesis of inorganic glasses. A telluride glass with a refractive index (RI = 2.15@615 nm) akin to that of nitride phosphor (∼2.19) has been devised, demonstrating high efficiency in photon utilization. The lower glass-transition temperature plays a crucial role in safeguarding phosphor particles against erosion resulting from exposure to high-temperature melts. Phosphor-in-glass retains 93% of the quantum efficiency observed for pure phosphor. The assembled white light-emitting diodes module has precise color tuning capabilities, achieving an optimal color rendering index of 93.7, a luminous efficacy of 80.4 lm/W, and a correlated color temperature of 5850 K. These outcomes hold potential for advancing the realm of inorganic package and high-quality white light illumination.

Background: Studies in populations with type 1 diabetes highlight racial/ethnic disparities in the use of diabetes technology; however, little is known about disparities among those with type 2 diabetes. This project investigates the racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in diabetes technology awareness and use in adults with type 2 diabetes in the ambulatory setting. Methods: Adults ≥40 years of age with type 2 diabetes in ambulatory care were invited to participate via an e-mail link to a de-identified REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) questionnaire. Variables, including awareness and use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and insulin pumps, were summarized descriptively using frequencies and percentages and were compared across racial/ethnic groups, education level, and income using Pearson χ2 or Fisher exact tests. Results: The study included 116 participants, most of whom (62%) were White, elderly Medicare recipients. Compared with White participants, those of racially/ethnically minoritized groups were less likely to be aware of CGM (P = 0.013) or insulin pumps (P = 0.001). Participants with a high school education or less were also less likely to be aware of insulin pumps (P = 0.041). Interestingly, neither awareness nor use of CGM or insulin pumps was found to be associated with income. Conclusion: This cross-sectional analysis suggests that racially/ethnically minoritized groups and individuals with lower education have less awareness of CGM or insulin pumps.

Two-dimensional In2Se3, an unconventional phase-change material, has drawn considerable attention for polymorphic phase transitions and electronic device applications. However, its reversible thermally driven phase transitions and potential use in photonic devices have yet to be explored. In this study, we observe the thermally driven reversible phase transitions between α and ß' phases with the assistance of local strain from surface wrinkles and ripples, as well as reversible phase changes within the ß phase family. These transitions lead to changes in the refractive index and other optoelectronic properties with minimal optical loss at telecommunication bands, which are crucial in integrated photonic applications such as postfabrication phase trimming. Additionally, multilayer ß'-In2Se3 working as a transparent microheater proves to be a viable option for efficient thermo-optic modulation. This prototype design for layered In2Se3 offers immense potential for integrated photonics and paves the way for multilevel, nonvolatile optical memory applications.

Cancer is one of the greatest threats to human health due to late diagnosis and incomplete resection. The bimodal probe combines positron emission tomography (PET) imaging for noninvasive whole-body scanning with intraoperative near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) surgical guidance for preoperative tumor detection, tumor resection during surgery, and postoperative monitoring. We developed a new PET/NIRF bimodal imaging agent, [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-NPC, covalently coupled to DCDSTCY and DOTA via ethylenediamine and radiolabeled with gallium-68, and investigated it in vitro and in vivo. The probe was found to be preferential for colon cancer cells due to the organic anion-transporting polypeptide1B3 (OATP1B3). PET/NIRF imaging allowed us to confirm [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-NPC as a promising probe for tumor detection, as it provides good biosafety and high-contrast tumor accumulation. Orthotopic and subcutaneous colon tumors were successfully resected under real-time NIRF guidance. [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-NPC provides highly sensitive and unlimited tissue-penetrating PET/NIRF imaging, helping to visualize and differentiate tumors from adjacent tissue.

Human navigation relies on inputs to our paired eyes and ears. Although we also have two nasal passages, there has been little empirical indication that internostril differences yield directionality in human olfaction without involving the trigeminal system. By using optic flow that captures the pattern of apparent motion of surface elements in a visual scene, we demonstrate through formal psychophysical testing that a moderate binaral concentration disparity of a nontrigeminal odorant consistently biases recipients' perceived direction of self-motion toward the higher-concentration side, despite that they cannot verbalize which nostril smells a stronger odor. We further show that the effect depends on the internostril ratio of odor concentrations and not the numeric difference in concentration between the two nostrils. Taken together, our findings provide behavioral evidence that humans smell in stereo and subconsciously utilize stereo olfactory cues in spatial navigation.

Serratia ureilytica HNU47 was originally isolated from rhizosphere soil of stock in a continuous cropping tomato-planting field, which has excellent antagonistic ability against Ralstonia solanacearum. Here, we sequenced the genome of HNU47 to gain insights into the underlying basis of its antagonistic activity. Results of phylogenetic analysis of the whole genomic sequence demonstrated that HNU47 belongs to S. ureilytica. Through antiSMASH analysis, 10 secondary metabolite biosynthesis gene clusters were predicted. There were only two gene clusters with similarity higher than 95% with known compounds' gene clusters and the similarities of the other eight gene clusters were lower than 30%, including three gene clusters with no homology. In addition, biocontrol experiments confirmed that HNU47 could decrease the incidence of bacterial wilt caused by R. solanacearum on tomato. These findings support the potential of developing S. ureilytica HNU47 as a biocontrol agent against R. solanacearum by producing some unknown active compounds. The genome sequence reported here is also useful for revealing the modulation mechanisms underlying biosynthesis of active compounds.

Hybrid integration of van der Waals materials on a photonic platform enables diverse exploration of novel active functions and significant improvement in device performance for next-generation integrated photonic circuits, but developing waveguide-integrated photodetectors based on conventionally investigated transition metal dichalcogenide materials at the full optical telecommunication bands and mid-infrared range is still a challenge. Here, we integrate PdSe2 with silicon waveguide for on-chip photodetection with a high responsivity from 1260 to 1565 nm, a low noise-equivalent power of 4.0 pW·Hz-0.5, a 3-dB bandwidth of 1.5 GHz, and a measured data rate of 2.5 Gbit·s-1. The achieved PdSe2 photodetectors provide new insights to explore the integration of novel van der Waals materials with integrated photonic platforms and exhibit great potential for diverse applications over a broad infrared range of wavelengths, such as on-chip sensing and spectroscopy.

Multimodality imaging recognized as a promising monitoring strategy can serve the needs of accurate diagnosis and treatment of cancer by providing molecular and anatomic information about tumor sites. However, the probes based on multiple imaging modalities for surgery navigation remain limited due to poor biocompatibility and tumor targeting specificity. Herein, we present a small-molecule near-infrared fluorescence/magnetic resonance (NIRF/MR) imaging probe, Gd-NMC-3, covalently coupled with DCDSTCY and Gd-DOTA via butane diamine, for precise detection and intraoperative visualization. The in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that Gd-NMC-3 could be effectively accumulated in tumor sites as a bimodal imaging molecule exhibiting significant fluorescence accumulation and reasonable relaxation property in tumors with low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility. Furthermore, Gd-NMC-3 was successfully applied to provide real-time visual navigation in LM3 orthotopic and subcutaneous tumor models to guide the resection of tumors. Importantly, no more fluorescence was observed in mice after operation, implying the total removal of tumor tissues. In conclusion, Gd-NMC-3 has great potential to be applied in the clinic based on its high resolution and sensitivity in tumor imaging.

Inferring brain connectivity network and quantifying the significance of interactions between brain regions are of paramount importance in neuroscience. Although there have recently emerged some tests for graph inference based on independent samples, there is no readily available solution to test the change of brain network for paired and correlated samples. In this article, we develop a paired test of matrix graphs to infer brain connectivity network when the groups of samples are correlated. The proposed test statistic is both bias corrected and variance corrected, and achieves a small estimation error rate. The subsequent multiple testing procedure built on this test statistic is guaranteed to asymptotically control the false discovery rate at the pre-specified level. Both the methodology and theory of the new test are considerably different from the two independent samples framework, owing to the strong correlations of measurements on the same subjects before and after the stimulus activity. We illustrate the efficacy of our proposal through simulations and an analysis of an Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative dataset.

MOTIVATION: In pharmacogenomic studies, the biological context of cell lines influences the predictive ability of drug-response models and the discovery of biomarkers. Thus, similar cell lines are often studied together based on prior knowledge of biological annotations. However, this selection approach is not scalable with the number of annotations, and the relationship between gene-drug association patterns and biological context may not be obvious. RESULTS: We present a procedure to compare cell lines based on their gene-drug association patterns. Starting with a grouping of cell lines from biological annotation, we model gene-drug association patterns for each group as a bipartite graph between genes and drugs. This is accomplished by applying sparse canonical correlation analysis (SCCA) to extract the gene-drug associations, and using the canonical vectors to construct the edge weights. Then, we introduce a nuclear norm-based dissimilarity measure to compare the bipartite graphs. Accompanying our procedure is a permutation test to evaluate the significance of similarity of cell line groups in terms of gene-drug associations. In the pharmacogenomic datasets CTRP2, GDSC2 and CCLE, hierarchical clustering of carcinoma groups based on this dissimilarity measure uniquely reveals clustering patterns driven by carcinoma subtype rather than primary site. Next, we show that the top associated drugs or genes from SCCA can be used to characterize the clustering patterns of haematopoietic and lymphoid malignancies. Finally, we confirm by simulation that when drug responses are linearly dependent on expression, our approach is the only one that can effectively infer the true hierarchy compared to existing approaches. We correct the errors in the performance of the MRR modulator in our paper [Opt. Express29, 23508, (2021)10.1364/OE.430756]. The FWHM of the MRR device should be 0.22nm instead of 0.11nm. And thus, the Q factor, power consumption, and FOM need to be corrected. After the correction, the performance of our devices was still the best among 2µm-waveband TO modulators. All the conclusions are not changed.

There is increasing evidence suggesting that estratetraenol, a human chemosignal deemed a putative sex pheromone, affects social cognition and sexual behavior. The present study investigates the effects of estratetraenol on preference for sexual rewards in heterosexual males. Seventy-six male participants received either estratetraenol or a control carrier in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-participant design. Participants underwent a sexual delay discounting task, in which they were asked to make a choice between a variable larger-later option (i.e., waiting longer to view a sexual picture for a longer duration) and a smaller-sooner option (i.e., waiting for a fixed shorter period of time to view the same picture for a shorter duration). Results revealed that, compared to the control solution, estratetraenol selectively increases preference for larger-later sexual rewards. Computational modelling showed that estratetraenol has no observable influence on impulsivity, as indexed by the discounting rate. These findings suggest that estratetraenol could increase men's sexual motivation, possibly facilitating behavioral processes associated with the pursuit of a sexual partner.

Although mesocrystals with ordered building units have great potential in many fields because of the large amount of organic molecules used as structure-directing agents during their synthesis process, severe matrix interference makes their surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties rarely understood. Herein, a rapid (20 s) and green microwave synthetic route is developed for the 100 g scale preparation of plasmonic W18O49 mesocrystals with no additives. The ultrathin (1.5 nm) and oxygen vacancy-rich W18O49 nanowires as a building unit greatly improve the interface charge transfer, while the periodic mesocrystal structure significantly enhances the localized surface plasmon resonance effect and creates high-density electromagnetic hot spots among the nanowires. An outstanding enhancement factor of 1.2 × 107 and an ultralow detectable limit of 10-11 M are achieved, and the single-molecule imaging is also realized on this mesocrystal-based SERS substrate. Moreover, the relative standard deviation of the fabricated large-area (2.2 cm2) SERS substrate is only 6.8%.

The 2-µm-waveband has been recognized as a potential telecommunication window for next-generation low-loss, low-latency optical communication. Thermo-optic (TO) modulators and switches, which are essential building blocks in a large-scale integrated photonic circuit, and their performances directly affect the energy consumption and reconfiguration time of an on-chip photonic system. Previous TO modulation based on metallic heaters at 2-µm-waveband suffer from slow response time and high power consumption. In this paper, high-performance thermo-optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer and ring resonator modulators operating at 2-µm-waveband were demonstrated. By embedding a doped silicon (p++-p-p++) junction into the waveguide, our devices reached a record modulation efficiency of 0.17 nm/mW for Mach-Zehnder interferometer based modulator and its rise/fall time was 3.49 µs/3.46 µs which has been the fastest response time reported in a 2-µm-waveband TO devices so far. And a lowest Pπ power of 3.33 mW among reported 2-µm TO devices was achieved for a ring resonator-based modulator.

Binding of airborne odour molecules to olfactory receptors at the top of the nasal cavity gives rise to our rich olfactory experience. Whether airflow plays a role in human olfactory perception beyond the transportation of odorants is scantly known. Combining psychophysical measures with strict controls of nasal flow parameters, we demonstrate in four experiments that the perceived intensity of a unilaterally presented odour decreases systematically with the amount of contralateral nasal airflow, in manners that are independent of odour flow rate, nasal pressure, perceived sniff vigour or attentional allocation. Moreover, the effect is due to the sensed rather than the factual amount of nasal flow, as applying a local anaesthetic to the contralateral nostril produces the same effect as physically blocking it. Our findings indicate that nasal flow spontaneously engages central olfactory processing and serves as an integral part of the olfactory percept in humans.

Smell identification ability reflects the functional integrity of the human olfactory system. Its deficit is a prodromal marker for Parkinson's disease and is also implicated in Alzheimer's disease and other neurological and psychiatric disorders. Considering the impact of cultural factors on odor identifiability, we have developed a smell identification test specifically for the Chinese population (CSIT), which includes 40 odor items that are familiar to this population, presented in a multiple-choice format. The CSIT has a test-retest reliability of 0.92 and is validated against the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT) and the Sniffin' Sticks Identification Test 16 (SS-16). In terms of identification accuracy, Chinese participants on average score 15% higher on the CSIT than on the UPSIT or SS-16. The CSIT is also sensitive to age and gender differences in smell identification ability. As such, the CSIT provides an effective tool for the assessment of olfactory function in the Chinese population.

Background: Growing evidence indicates both shared and distinct features of emotional perception in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. In these disorders, alterations in spontaneous low-frequency fluctuations have been reported in the neural system for emotional perception, but the similarities and differences in the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) across the 3 disorders are unknown. Methods: We compared ALFF and its signal balance in the neural system for emotional perception at 2 frequency bands (slow-5 and slow-4) in 119 participants with schizophrenia, 100 with bipolar disorder, 123 with major depressive disorder and 183 healthy controls. We performed exploratory Pearson partial correlation analyses to determine the relationship between ALFF signal balance and clinical variables. Results: We observed commonalities in ALFF change patterns across the 3 disorders for emotional perception neural substrates, such as increased ALFF in the anterior cerebrum (including subcortical, limbic, paralimbic and heteromodal cortical regions) and decreased ALFF in the posterior visual cortices. Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder showed significantly decreased ALFF signal balance in the neural system for emotional perception at both slow-5 and slow-4 frequency bands, with the greatest alterations for schizophrenia, followed by bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. We found a negative correlation between ALFF signal balance and negative/disorganized symptoms in slow-4 across the 3 disorders. Limitations: The relatively broad age range in our sample and the cross-sectional study design may not account for our findings. Conclusion: The extent of the commonalities we observed further support the concept of core neurobiological disruptions shared among the 3 disorders; ALFF signal balance could be an important neuroimaging marker for the diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder.

Mesangial cells are essential for the structure and function of glomeruli, but the mechanisms underlying these roles are not well understood. Here, we performed a single-cell RNA-sequence (RNA-seq) analysis of mouse mesangial cells using the Fluidigm C1 platform. We found that gene expression in individual mesangial cells was tremendously heterogeneous, with mean correlation coefficients of 0.20, and most mesangial genes were actually expressed in only a portion of mesangial cells and are therefore presumably dispensable. In contrast, 1,045 genes were expressed in every single mesangial cell and were considered mesangial cell essential genes. A gene ontology analysis revealed a significant enrichment of genes associated with the endothelium, supporting the inference that mesangial cells function as pericytes. Among 58 endothelium-associated genes, 18 encode proteins that are secreted and may be directly involved in endothelial homeostasis. Importantly, 11 (Angpt2, Anxa5, Axl, Ecm1, Eng, Fn1, Mfge8, Msn, Nrp1, Serpine2, and Sparc) were upregulated, while 2 (Apoe and Fgf1) were downregulated in various glomerulopathies. The enrichment of genes associated with other reported functions of mesangial cells was also found. Furthermore, we identified 173 genes specifically expressed in every mesangial cell in glomeruli from the mesangial cell essential gene list. Finally, based on single mesangial cell RNA-seq results, we found that commonly used glomerular cell type markers, including Fhl2, Igfbp5, Wt1, Tek/Tie2, Kdr/Flk1, Flt1/Vegfr1, and Cd34, are actually not specific. Thus, single mesangial cell RNA-seq analysis has provided insights into the functions and underlying mechanisms of mesangial cells.
