Semantic knowledge includes understanding of objects and their features and also understanding of the characteristics of events. The hub-and-spoke theory holds that these conceptual representations rely on multiple information sources that are integrated in a central hub in the ventral anterior temporal lobes. The dual-hub theory expands this framework with the claim that the ventral anterior temporal lobe hub is specialized for object representation, while a second hub in angular gyrus is specialized for event representation. To test these ideas, we used representational similarity analysis, univariate and psychophysiological interaction analyses of fMRI data collected while participants processed object and event concepts (e.g. "an apple," "a wedding") presented as images and written words. Representational similarity analysis showed that angular gyrus encoded event concept similarity more than object similarity, although the left angular gyrus also encoded object similarity. Bilateral ventral anterior temporal lobes encoded both object and event concept structure, and left ventral anterior temporal lobe exhibited stronger coding for events. Psychophysiological interaction analysis revealed greater connectivity between left ventral anterior temporal lobe and right pMTG, and between right angular gyrus and bilateral ITG and middle occipital gyrus, for event concepts compared to object concepts. These findings support the specialization of angular gyrus for event semantics, though with some involvement in object coding, but do not support ventral anterior temporal lobe specialization for object concepts.

This study employs grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations to investigate the impact of functional group modifications (CH3, OH, NH2, and OLi) on the adsorption performance of CH4/N2 on Ni-MOF-74. The results revealed that functional group modifications significantly increased the adsorption capacity of Ni-MOF-74 for both CH4 and N2. The packed methyl groups in CH3-Ni-MOF-74 create an environment conducive to CH4, leading to the highest CH4 adsorption capacity. The electrostatic potential distribution indicates that the strong electron-donating effect introduced by the alkali metal Li results in the highest electrostatic potential gradient in Li-O-Ni-MOF-74, leading to the strongest adsorption of N2, this is unfavorable for CH4/N2 separation. At 1500 kPa the selectivity order of adsorbents for mixed gases was as follows: CH3-Ni-MOF-74 > NH2-Ni-MOF-74 > OH-Ni-MOF-74 > Ni-MOF-74 > Li-O-Ni-MOF-74. This study highlights that CH3-Ni-MOF-74 possesses optimal CH4 selectivity and adsorption performance. Given the current lack of research on functionalized MOF-74 for the separation of CH4 and N2, the findings of this study will serve as a theoretical guide and provide references for the applications of CH4 adsorption and CH4/N2 separation.

AIM: In recent years, proteomics research has surged, with numerous observational studies identifying associations between plasma proteins and type 2 diabetes. However, research specifically focusing on the ratios of plasma proteins in type 2 diabetes remains relatively scarce. METHODS: This study primarily employed a two-sample, two-step Mendelian randomization (MR) approach, leveraging genetic data from several large, publicly accessible genome-wide association studies, wherein single nucleotide polymorphisms served as proxies for exposures and diseases. Within this framework, we applied two-sample MR to assess the associations between the 2821 plasma protein-to-protein ratios and type 2 diabetes along with its complications and utilized reverse MR to confirm the unidirectionality of these causal relationships. In addition, we employed two-step MR to investigate the potential mediating role of body mass index in these associations. To augment the robustness of our findings, we systematically implemented a series of sensitivity analyses. RESULTS: The results gleaned from the inverse-variance weighted method elucidated that a cumulative sum of 23 protein-to-protein ratios bore a causal nexus with type 2 diabetes across both sample cohorts. With each incremental elevation of 1 standard deviation in the genetically anticipated protein-to-protein ratio, the susceptibility to type 2 diabetes oscillated from 0.93 (95% confidence interval: 0.87, 1.00) for the CNTN3/NCSS1 protein level ratio to 1.13 (1.06, 1.22) for the DBNL/NCK2 protein level ratio. Moreover, a tally of eight protein-to-protein ratios correlated with a minimum of one complication linked to type 2 diabetes. Diverse sensitivity analyses corroborated the robustness of these observations. CONCLUSIONS: The outcomes of our investigation unveiled correlations between 23 plasma protein-to-protein ratios and type 2 diabetes, with eight of these ratios entwined with complications of type 2 diabetes. These discoveries offer novel perspectives on the diagnosis and management of type 2 diabetes and its associated complications.

Agricultural applications of nanotechnologies necessitate addressing safety concerns associated with nanopesticides, yet research has not adequately elucidated potential environmental risks between nanopesticides and their conventional counterparts. To address this gap, we investigated the risk of nanopesticides by comparing the ecotoxicity of nanoencapsulated imidacloprid (nano-IMI) with its active ingredient to nontarget freshwater organisms (embryonic Danio rerio, Daphnia magna, and Chironomus kiinensis). Nano-IMI elicited approximately 5 times higher toxicity than IMI to zebrafish embryos with and without chorion, while no significant difference was observed between the two invertebrates. Toxicokinetics further explained the differential toxicity patterns of the two IMI analogues. One-compartmental two-phase toxicokinetic modeling showed that nano-IMI exhibited significantly slower elimination and subsequently higher bioaccumulation potential than IMI in zebrafish embryos (dechorinated), while no disparity in toxicokinetics was observed between nano-IMI and IMI in D. magna and C. kiinensis. A two-compartmental toxicokinetic model successfully simulated the slow elimination of IMI from C. kiinensis and confirmed that both analogues of IMI reached toxicologically relevant targets at similar levels. Although nanopesticides exhibit comparable or elevated toxicity, future work is of utmost importance to properly understand the life cycle risks from production to end-of-life exposures, which helps establish optimal management measures before their widespread applications.

Lung cancer is a malignant tumor with high mortality and drug resistance. Therefore, it is urgent to explore natural and nontoxic drugs to treat lung cancer. In this study, the natural active ingredient AANL extracted from Agrocybe aegirita was used to modify nanoselenium by an oxidation-reduction method. Transmission electron microscope detection and infrared spectroscopy showed that a novel selenium nanocomposite named AANL-SeNPs was successfully prepared. The results of nanoscale characterization showed that AANL-SeNPs had good stability and uniform dispersion in aqueous solution by zeta potential and spectrum analysis. At the cellular level, we found that AANL-SeNPs significantly inhibited the cell viability of lung cancer cells, and the cell inhibition rate of 60 nM AANL-SeNPs was 39 % in H157 cells, 67 % in H147 cells, and 62 % in A549 cells. The IC50 value of AANL-SeNPs was 51.85 nM in A549 cells and 81.57 nM in H157 cells. Moreover, AANL-SeNPs could inhibit the cell proliferation and migration, and enhance the sensitivity of lung cancer cells to osimertinib and has no toxic to normal cells. In vivo, AANL-SeNPs significantly slowed tumor growth in tumor-bearing mice by establishing a subcutaneous transplantation tumor model for lung cancer, and the tumor size was smaller and was reduced about 79 % in 2 mg/kg AANL-SeNPs group compared with PBS group. Mechanistically, a total of 38 differentially expressed proteins were identified by data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry. A significantly upregulated protein, CDC-like kinase 2 (CLK2), was screened and validated for further analysis, which showed that the expression levels of CLK2 were increased in H157 and H1437 cells after AANL-SeNPs treatment. The results obtained in this study suggest that a novel selenium nanocomposite AANL-SeNPs, which inhibits lung cancer by upregulating the expression of CLK2.

In this work, an energy decomposition analysis (EDA) method with the strategy of density matrix, called DM-EDA, is proposed on the basis of single reference electronic structure calculations. Different from traditional EDA methods, instead of an intermediate state wave function, the EDA terms in DM-EDA are expressed in the forms of the density matrix. This method can be carried out with various kinds of density matrices. With the efficient implementation, DM-EDA not only greatly improves the computational efficiency but also provides quantitative knowledge of intermolecular interactions with a large number of monomers.

The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanism underlying LW-1-induced resistance to TMV in wild-type and salicylic acid (SA)-deficient NahG transgenic tobacco plants. Our findings revealed that LW-1 failed to induce antivirus infection activity and increase SA content in NahG tobacco, indicating the crucial role of SA in these processes. Meanwhile, LW-1 triggered defense-related early-signaling nitric oxide (NO) generation, as evidenced by the emergence of NO fluorescence in both types of tobacco upon treatment with LW-1, however, NO fluorescence was stronger in NahG compared to wild-type tobacco. Notably, both of them were eliminated by the NO scavenger cPTIO, which also reversed LW-1-induced antivirus activity and the increase of SA content, suggesting that NO participates in LW-1-induced resistance to TMV, and may act upstream of the SA pathway. Defense-related enzymes and genes were detected in tobacco with or without TMV inoculation, and the results showed that LW-1 regulated both enzyme activity (ß-1,3-glucanase [GLU], catalase [CAT] and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase [PAL]) and gene expression (PR1, PAL, WYKY4) through NO signaling in both SA-dependent and SA-independent pathways.

BACKGROUND: Omphalia lapidescens is a saprophytic and parasitic fungus belonging to the Polypora genus of Tricholomataceae. It has repellent, insecticidal, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. RESULT: This study found that the extract of O. lapidescens had significant anti-TMV activity, and the main active component was homopolysaccharide LW-1 by Bioassay-guided fractionation. LW-1 is a glucan with ß-(1,3) glucoside bond as the main chain and ß-(1,6) glucoside bond as the branch chain, with molecular weight in the range of 172,916-338,827 Da. The protective and inactive efficacies of LW-1(100 mg/L) against TMV were 78.10% and 48.20%, but had no direct effect on the morphology of TMV particles. The results of mechanism of action showed that LW-1 induced the increase of the activity of defense enzymes such as POD, SOD and PAL in Nicotiana glutinosa. The overexpression of resistance genes such as NPR1, PR1 and PR5, and the increase of SA content. Further transcriptome sequencing showed that LW-1 activated MAPK signaling pathway, plant-pathogen interaction pathway and glucosinolide metabolic pathway in Arabidopsis thaliana. Besides, LW-1 induced crops resistance against plant pathogenic fungi. CONCLUSION: Taken together, the anti-TMV mechanism of LW-1 was to activate MAPK signaling pathway, inducing overexpression of resistance genes, activating plant immune system, and improving the synthesis and accumulation of plant defencins such as glucosinolide. LW-1-induced plant disease resistance has the advantages of broad spectrum and long duration, which has the potential to be developed as a new antiviral agent or plant immune resistance inducer.

Nanotechnology is one of the most promising and decisive technologies in the world. Nanomaterials, as the primary research aspect of nanotechnology, are quite different from macroscopic materials because of their unique optical, electrical, magnetic, thermal properties, and more robust mechanical properties, which make them play an essential role in the field of materials science, biomedical field, aerospace field, and environmental energy. Different preparation methods for nanomaterials have various physical and chemical properties and are widely used in different areas. In this review, we focused on the preparation methods, including chemical, physical, and biological methods due to the properties of nanomaterials. We mainly clarified the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of different preparation methods. Then, we focused on the applications of nanomaterials in biomedicine, including biological detection, tumor diagnosis, and disease treatment, which provide a development trend and promising prospects for nanomaterials.

Indium tin oxide (ITO) is widely used in optoelectronic devices due to its excellent optical and electrical properties. The real-time characterization of the ITO surface under electric and thermal fields plays an important role in determining its performance. The Goos-Hänchen (GH) and Imbert-Fedorov (IF) shifts and polarization properties of the dual circularly polarized lights reflected from ITO films can be used to describe its features. The dual circularly polarized lights, right circularly polarized (RCP, S 3≈+1) and left circularly polarized (LCP, S 3≈-1) lights, are obtained by rotating the linear polarizer and quarter-wave plate. The polarization properties and the lateral shifts of the RCP and LCP lights were studied by a polarimeter and a slim beam profiler. The results show that the polarization properties of the dual circularly polarized lights are mainly affected by temperature. The degree of the polarization properties of the RCP and LCP lights changed from 97.85% to 97.40%, and from 98.40 % to 83.50%, respectively. The reflectivity of the RCP and LCP lights changed from 42.19% to 40.37%, and from 43.80% to 0.80%, respectively. The GH and IF shifts of the RCP light are 156.50 µm and186.00 µm, respectively. The GH and IF shifts of the LCP light are 233.00 µm and 257.00 µm, respectively. The ITO film has more effect on the LCP light than that of the RCP light due to its strong ITO film (400) plane.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate several factors of persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection following conization in patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library were searched from January 1, 1998 to September 10, 2021. Random-effects models for meta-analyses were used and pooled relative risks with 95% confidence intervals were reported. Literature screening, data extraction, and assessment of the risk of bias in the included studies were conducted independently by two researchers. Data analysis was performed with Stata software, version 12.0. RESULTS: A total of 28 studies were included in this study. Meta-analysis revealed that surgical margin and residual disease were positively correlated with persistent HPV infection after conization. Compared with patients infected with other types of HPV, CIN patients with HPV 16 had a higher persistent infection rate (OR = 1.967, 95% CI (1.232-3.140), P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: CIN patients who are postmenopausal, have positive surgical margins and residual lesions, and are positive for HPV 16 are prone to persistent HPV infection after conization.

BACKGROUND: The application of virtual reality (VR) in gastroscopic operation teaching can be safe and effective, but the advantages can be realized only when students accept and use it. This study aims to identify the factors influencing Chinese clinical medical postgraduates on their intention to use the 3D gastroscopic model constructed based on VR technology using Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model. Students' demographic factors are also taken into consideration. METHODS: All methods were carried out in accordance with relevant guidelines. Data were collected from clinical medical postgraduates students in China using stratified sampling. A total of 292 questionnaires including valid responses were used in this study. Data were processed using Amos 24.0 and SPSS 26.0 software and the statistical analysis technique was based on structural equation modeling (SEM). RESULTS: The results showed that different from the mediator of home location and year of clinical learning, mediator of gender, university kind and graduate degree did not affect the behavioral intention. In addition, performance expectancy, facilitating condition, and social influence directly and indirectly have effect on behavioral intention. Also, the significance between social influence and performance expectancy, social influence and effort expectancy were verified. CONCLUSIONS: This study manifested that the proposed framework based on the UTAUT had explanatory power to identify the factors influencing the students' behavioral intention to use the 3D gastroscopic model constructed based on VR technology. Whereas, an important variable of effort expectancy in the frame of the SEM were not certified, thereby indicating that particular attention should be paid to this variable by universities and teachers before applying 3D gastroscopic model constructed based on VR technology in teaching. Added preparatory work is required such as explaining the basic knowledge of the operating steps of VR model and make students adequately understand its accessibility, which can probably improve the intentions of them to use it. The positive effects of social influence on performance expectancy and effort expectancy we proposed was also verified in this study, which provided a direction for future research.

Embodied theories of semantic cognition predict that brain regions involved in motion perception are engaged when people comprehend motion concepts expressed in language. Left lateral occipitotemporal cortex (LOTC) is implicated in both motion perception and motion concept processing but prior studies have produced mixed findings on which parts of this region are engaged by motion language. We scanned participants performing semantic judgements about sentences describing motion events and static events. We performed univariate analyses, multivariate pattern analyses (MVPA) and psychophysiological interaction (PPI) analyses to investigate the effect of motion on activity and connectivity in different parts of LOTC. In multivariate analyses that decoded whether a sentence described motion or not, the middle and posterior parts of LOTC showed above-chance level performance, with performance exceeding that of other brain regions. Univariate ROI analyses found the middle part of LOTC was more active for motion events than static ones. Finally, PPI analyses found that when processing motion events, the middle and posterior parts of LOTC (overlapping with motion perception regions), increased their connectivity with cognitive control regions. Taken together, these results indicate that the more posterior parts of LOTC, including motion perception cortex, respond differently to motion vs. static events. These findings are consistent with embodiment accounts of semantic processing, and suggest that understanding verbal descriptions of motion engages areas of the occipitotemporal cortex involved in perceiving motion.

Chymotrypsin, an extensively known proteolytic enzyme, plays a substantial role in maintaining physiological functions, including protein digestion, immune response, and tissue repair. To date, intense attention has been focused on the invention of efficient and sensitive chemical tools for chymotrypsin activity measurement. Among them, the "nonpeptide"-based chymotrypsin probe design strategy utilizing the esterase activity of chymotrypsin has been well-developed due to its low cost and high atom-economy feature. However, the ester-bond-based nature of these probes make them possibly vulnerable to esterases and active chemicals. These defects strictly restricted the application of the previously reported probes, especially for imaging in living systems. Therefore, to acquire fluorogenic probes with sufficient stability and specificity for chymotrypsin sensing in a complicated biological environment, a more stable skeleton for nonpeptide-based chymotrypsin probe construction is urgently needed. Herein, a novel nonpeptide-based fluorogenic probe for specific chymotrypsin activity sensing was designed and synthesized by the substitution of an ester-based linker with a heptafluorobutylamide moiety. The acquired probe, named TMBIHF, showed high selectivity toward various enzymes and reactive chemicals, while it retained high sensitivity and catalytic efficiency toward chymotrypsin. Moreover, TMBIHF was successfully applied for monitoring chymotrypsin activity and pancreas development in live zebrafish, specific sensing of exogenous and endogenous chymotrypsin in nude mice, and visualizing chymotrypsin-like activity-dependent cellular apoptosis, thus providing an alternative and reliable way for chymotrypsin-targeted biosensor or prodrug construction.

The glycoprotein alpha-1-antichymotrypsin (AACT), a serine protease inhibitor, is mainly synthesized in the liver and then secreted into the blood and is involved in the acute phase response, inflammation, and proteolysis. The dysregulation of AACT and its glycosylation levels are associated with tumor progression and recurrence, and could be used as a biomarker for tumor monitoring. In this review, we summarized the expression level, glycosylation modification, and biological characteristics of AACT during inflammation, neurodegenerative or other elderly diseases, and tumorigenesis, as well as, focused on the biological roles of AACT in cancer. The aberrant expression of AACT in cancer might be due to genetic alterations and/or immune by bioinformatics analysis. Moreover, AACT may serve as a diagnostic or prognostic biomarker or therapeutic target in tumors. Furthermore, we found that the expression of AACT was associated with the overall survival of patients with human cancers. Decreased AACT expression was associated with poor survival in patients with liver cancer, increased AACT expression was associated with shorter survival in patients with pancreatic cancer, and decreased AACT expression was associated with shorter survival in patients with early lung cancer. The review confirmed the key roles of AACT in tumorigenesis, suggesting that the glycoprotein AACT may serve as a biomarker for tumor diagnosis and prognosis, and could be a potential therapeutic target for human diseases.

PURPOSE: Periarticular infiltration analgesia (PIA) is widely used to control postoperative pain in patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of adding corticosteroids to the PIA cocktail for pain management in patients who underwent TKA. METHODS: The patients were randomized to the corticosteroid or control group (double-blind). The patients in the corticosteroid group received a periarticular infiltration of an analgesic cocktail of ropivacaine, epinephrine, and dexamethasone. Dexamethasone was omitted from the cocktail in the control group. The primary outcomes were postoperative pain [assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS)], time until the administration of first rescue analgesia, morphine consumption, and postoperative inflammatory biomarkers [C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6)]. The secondary outcomes were functional recovery, assessed by the range of knee motion, quadriceps strength, and daily ambulation distance. The tertiary outcomes included postoperative adverse effects. RESULTS: The patients in the corticosteroid group had significantly lower resting VAS scores at 6 and 12 h after surgery, lower VAS scores during motion up to 24 h after surgery, and lower levels of inflammatory biomarkers. All the differences in the VAS scores between the two groups did not reach the point to be considered clinically significant. The additional use of corticosteroid significantly prolonged analgesic effects and led to lower rescue morphine consumption. The patients in the corticosteroid group had significantly better functional recovery on the first day after surgery. The two groups had a similar occurrence of adverse effects. CONCLUSIONS: Adding corticosteroids to an analgesic cocktail for PIA could lightly improve early pain relief and accelerate recovery in the first 24 h after TKA. In chronic infectious diseases caused by gram-negative bacteria, such as osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, and periodontitis, osteoclastic activity is enhanced with elevated inflammation, which disturbs the bone homeostasis and results in osteolysis. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), as a bacteria product, plays an important role in this process. Recent evidence shows that an antimalarial drug artesunate attenuates LPS-induced osteolysis independent of RANKL. In this study we evaluated the effects of artesunate on LPS-induced osteoclastogenesis in vitro and femur osteolysis in vivo, and explored the mechanisms underlying the effects of artesunate on LPS-induced osteoclast differentiation independent of RANKL. In preosteoclastic RAW264.7 cells, we found that artesunate (1.56-12.5 µM) dose dependently inhibited LPS-induced osteoclast formation accompanied by suppressing LPS-stimulated osteoclast-related gene expression (Fra-2, TRAP, Cathepsin K, ß3-integrin, DC-STAMP, and Atp6v0d2). We showed that artesunate (3.125-12.5 µM) inhibited LPS-stimulated nuclear factor of activated T cells c1 (NFATc1) but not NF-κB transcriptional activity; artesunate (6.25, 12.5 µM) significantly inhibited LPS-stimulated NFATc1 protein expression. Furthermore, artesunate treatment markedly suppressed LPS-induced Ca2+ influx, and decreased the expression of PP2B-Aα (calcineurin) and pPLCγ1 in the cells. In addition, artesunate treatment significantly decreased the expression of upstream signals TLR4 and TRAF6 during LPS-induced osteoclastogenesis. Administration of artesunate (10 mg/kg, ip) for 8 days effectively inhibited serum TNF-α levels and ameliorated LPS (5 mg/kg, ip)-induced inflammatory bone loss in vivo. Taken together, artesunate attenuates LPS-induced inflammatory osteoclastogenesis by inhibiting the expression of TLR4/TRAF6 and the downstream PLCγ1-Ca2+-NFATc1 signaling pathway. Artesunate is a valuable choice to treat bone loss induced by gram-negative bacteria infection or inflammation in RANKL-independent pathway.

Sinomenine (SIN) is an anti-inflammatory and antiarthritic alkaloid derived from Sinomenium acutum, and the product Zhengqing Fengtongning produced from SIN has been marketed in China for treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Interestingly, we recently found that SIN could significantly ameliorate bone destruction induced by breast cancer cells in mice. Micro-CT examination showed that bone loss of the trabecular bones in tumor-bearing mice was markedly decreased by i.p. treatment of SIN at 150 mg/kg body weight. A mechanistic study demonstrated that SIN could suppress osteoclast formation and bone absorption induced by both MDA-MB-231 cells and MDA-MB-231 cell-conditioned medium (MDA-MB-231 CM) in preosteoclastic RAW264.7 cells. The MDA-MB-231 CM-induced osteoclast-related genes TRAP and OSCAR were obviously downregulated by SIN. In addition, mRNA expression of c-Fos and NFATc1 and nuclear translocation of c-Fos and NFATc1 protein were inhibited by SIN during MDA-MB-231 CM-induced osteoclastogenesis, while NF-κB signaling was not impacted by SIN. More interestingly, SIN was demonstrated to decrease hIL-8 mRNA expression in cultured MDA-MB-231 cells and to inhibit hIL-8 protein expression in MDA-MB-231 cells cocultured with preosteoclastic RAW264.7 cells while simultaneously downregulating CXCR1, the ligand of IL-8 related to bone destruction, during MDA-MB-231 CM-induced osteoclastogenesis. Previously, IL-8/CXCR1 was reported to be associated with the pathogenesis and progression of RA, and SIN was observed to markedly ameliorate bone erosion of RA patients. Our current findings may extend the utilization of SIN to preventing osteoclastogenesis and bone destruction in breast cancer patients and may enable IL-8/CXCR1 to serve as new targets for both anticancer and antiarthritic drug discovery.

Adzuki bean (Vigna angularis), an important legume crop, is grown in more than 30 countries of the world. The seed of adzuki bean, as an important source of starch, digestible protein, mineral elements, and vitamins, is widely used foods for at least a billion people. Here, we generated a high-quality draft genome sequence of adzuki bean by whole-genome shotgun sequencing. The assembled contig sequences reached to 450 Mb (83% of the genome) with an N50 of 38 kb, and the total scaffold sequences were 466.7 Mb with an N50 of 1.29 Mb. Of them, 372.9 Mb of scaffold sequences were assigned to the 11 chromosomes of adzuki bean by using a single nucleotide polymorphism genetic map. A total of 34,183 protein-coding genes were predicted. Functional analysis revealed that significant differences in starch and fat content between adzuki bean and soybean were likely due to transcriptional abundance, rather than copy number variations, of the genes related to starch and oil synthesis. We detected strong selection signals in domestication by the population analysis of 50 accessions including 11 wild, 11 semiwild, 17 landraces, and 11 improved varieties. In addition, the semiwild accessions were illuminated to have a closer relationship to the cultigen accessions than the wild type, suggesting that the semiwild adzuki bean might be a preliminary landrace and play some roles in the adzuki bean domestication. The genome sequence of adzuki bean will facilitate the identification of agronomically important genes and accelerate the improvement of adzuki bean.

OBJECTIVE: To assess associations between breastfeeding and iron status at 9 months of age in 2 samples of Chinese infants. STUDY DESIGN: Associations between feeding at 9 months of age (breastfed as sole milk source, mixed fed, or formula fed) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA), iron deficiency, and iron sufficiency were determined in infants from Zhejiang (n = 142) and Hebei (n= 813) provinces. Iron deficiency was defined as body iron < 0 mg/kg, and IDA as iron deficiency + hemoglobin < 110 g/L. Multiple logistic regression assessed associations between feeding pattern and iron status. RESULTS: Breastfeeding was associated with iron status (P < .001). In Zhejiang, 27.5% of breastfed infants had IDA compared with 0% of formula-fed infants. The odds of iron deficiency/IDA were increased in breastfed and mixed-fed infants compared with formula-fed infants: breastfed vs formula-fed OR, 28.8 (95% CI, 3.7-226.4) and mixed-fed vs formula-fed OR, 11.0 (95% CI, 1.2-103.2). In Hebei, 44.0% of breastfed infants had IDA compared with 2.8% of formula-fed infants. With covariable adjustment, odds of IDA were increased in breastfed and mixed-fed groups: breastfed vs formula-fed OR, 78.8 (95% CI, 27.2-228.1) and mixed-fed vs formula-fed OR, 21.0 (95% CI, 7.3-60.9). CONCLUSIONS: In both cohorts, the odds of iron deficiency/IDA at 9 months of age were increased in breastfed and mixed-fed infants, and iron deficiency/IDA was common. Although the benefits of breastfeeding are indisputable, these findings add to the evidence that breastfeeding in later infancy identifies infants at risk for iron deficiency/IDA in many settings. Protocols for detecting and preventing iron deficiency/IDA in breastfed infants are needed. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT00642863 and NCT00613717.
