RESUMEN

The structural coloration of textiles with bionic photonic crystals (PCs) is expected to become a critical approach to the ecological coloration of textiles. Rapid and large-area preparation of PC structurally colored textiles can be achieved via self-assembly of high mass fractions of liquid photonic crystals (LPCs). However, the rapid and large-scale manufacturing of LPCs remains a challenge. In this work, the pH regulator is added in the process of emulsion polymerization to solve the problem of phase transformation caused by the thermal decomposition of the initiator to produce H+ , directly achieving 40 wt.% PS nanospheres in the dispersion. Then oligomers and small-molecule salts are removed from the system via dialysis, and the pre-crystallized LPC system is efficiently prepared. Adjusting the particle size and the mass fraction of nanospheres is shown to be an efficient way to control the optical properties of LPCs. The rapid and large-area preparation of PC structural color fabric and the patterned PC structural color fabric with an iridescent effect is implemented by using LPCs as the assembly intermediate. By constructing the encapsulation layer on the surface of the PC structural color fabric, the consistency of high structural stability and high color saturation of the PC is realized.

The Tavis-Cummings model is intensively investigated in quantum optics and has important applications in generation of multi-atom entanglement. Here, we employ a superconducting circuit quantum electrodynamic system to study a modified Tavis-Cummings model with directly-coupled atoms. In our device, three superconducting artificial atoms are arranged in a chain with direct coupling through fixed capacitors and strongly coupled to a transmission line resonator. By performing transmission spectrum measurements, we observe different anticrossing structures when one or two qubits are resonantly coupled to the resonator. In the case of the two-qubit Tavis-Cummings model without qubit-qubit interaction, we observe two dips at the resonance point of the anticrossing. The splitting of these dips is determined by Δ λ=2g12+g32, where g1 and g3 are the coupling strengths between Qubit 1 and the resonator, and Qubit 3 and the resonator, respectively. The direct coupling J12 between the two qubits results in three dressed states in the two-qubit Tavis-Cummings model at the frequency resonance point, leading to three dips in the transmission spectrum. In this case, the distance between the two farthest and asymmetrical dips, arising from the energy level splitting, is larger than in the previous case. The frequency interval between these two dips is determined by the difference in eigenvalues (Δ λ=ε 1+-ε 1-), obtained through numerical calculations. What we believe as novel and intriguing experimental results may potentially advance quantum optics experiments, providing valuable insights for future research.

We consider a one-dimensional (1D) coupled-resonator array (CRA), where a two-level quantum emitter (2LE) is electric-dipole coupled to the modes of two adjacent resonators. We investigate the energy spectrum, the photon probability distribution of the bound states, and the emission process of the 2LE into the CRA vacuum. A quantum phase transition is found which is characterized by the change of the number of the out-of-band discrete levels. The condition for this change is also presented. The photon wave functions of bound states are found to be asymmetry around the position of the 2LE when the coupling strengths between the 2LE and the resonator are not equal, and they have the same preferred directions which are primarily determined by the larger one among the coupling strengths. The presence of the atom-photon bound states is manifested in the form of a stationary oscillation or a non-vanishing constant in the long enough time.

Tissue effector cells of the monocyte lineage can differentiate into different cell types with specific cell function depending on their environment. The phenotype, developmental requirements, and functional mechanisms of immune protective macrophages that mediate the induction of transplantation tolerance remain elusive. Here, we demonstrate that costimulatory blockade favored accumulation of DC-SIGN-expressing macrophages that inhibited CD8(+) T cell immunity and promoted CD4(+)Foxp3(+) Treg cell expansion in numbers. Mechanistically, that simultaneous DC-SIGN engagement by fucosylated ligands and TLR4 signaling was required for production of immunoregulatory IL-10 associated with prolonged allograft survival. Deletion of DC-SIGN-expressing macrophages in vivo, interfering with their CSF1-dependent development, or preventing the DC-SIGN signaling pathway abrogated tolerance. Together, the results provide new insights into the tolerogenic effects of costimulatory blockade and identify DC-SIGN(+) suppressive macrophages as crucial mediators of immunological tolerance with the concomitant therapeutic implications in the clinic.

Typical catalysts used in dimethyl carbonate (DMC) transesterification encounter challenges in terms of environmental sustainability and economic viability. Calcium oxide (CaO), being an environmentally friendly and cost-effective catalyst, exhibits favorable compatibility with the criteria above. It has been conclusively demonstrated that CaO performs high efficiency as a catalyst for the transesterification between alcohols and DMC. The optimal conditions for the CaO-catalyzed transesterification of DMC and 1-octanol were determined (90 °C, 17 h, and CaO/1-octanol/DMC molar ratio = 0.3:1.0:40.0), under which the conversion of 1-octanol reaches 98.3%, while the yield and selectivity of methyl octyl carbonate are 98.1 and 99.9%, and CaO has been proven to have the efficient ability to be recycled three times. Meanwhile, the CaO-catalyzed reaction mechanism of the transesterification of DMC with alcohol is illustrated in the quantum chemical method based on the M06-2X functional, and the structures of the corresponding transition states are simultaneously derived. The activation energy barrier is proven to be effectively decreased by the catalytic effect of CaO. In addition, the electrostatic potential diagram verifies the proposed reaction sites. This research constructs the theoretical basis for CaO-based DMC chemistry and expands the green catalysts available for the synthesis of dialkyl carbonates.

Childhood maltreatment is an established risk factor for psychopathology. However, it remains unclear how childhood traumatic events relate to mental health problems and how the brain is involved. This study examined the serial mediation effect of brain morphological alterations and emotion-/reward-related functions on linking the relationship from maltreatment to depression. We recruited 156 healthy adolescents and young adults and an additional sample of 31 adolescents with major depressive disorder for assessment of childhood maltreatment, depressive symptoms, cognitive reappraisal and anticipatory/consummatory pleasure. Structural MRI data were acquired to identify maltreatment-related cortical and subcortical morphological differences. The mediation models suggested that emotional maltreatment of abuse and neglect, was respectively associated with increased gray matter volume in the ventral striatum and greater thickness in the middle cingulate cortex. These structural alterations were further related to reduced anticipatory pleasure and disrupted cognitive reappraisal, which contributed to more severe depressive symptoms among healthy individuals. The above mediating effects were not replicated in our clinical group partly due to the small sample size. Preventative interventions can target emotional and reward systems to foster resilience and reduce the likelihood of future psychiatric disorders among individuals with a history of maltreatment.

The quest to identify materials with tailored properties is increasingly expanding into high-order composition spaces, with a corresponding combinatorial explosion in the number of candidate materials. A key challenge is to discover regions in composition space where materials have novel properties. Traditional predictive models for material properties are not accurate enough to guide the search. Herein, we use high-throughput measurements of optical properties to identify novel regions in three-cation metal oxide composition spaces by identifying compositions whose optical trends cannot be explained by simple phase mixtures. We screen 376,752 distinct compositions from 108 three-cation oxide systems based on the cation elements Mg, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Y, In, Sn, Ce, and Ta. Data models for candidate phase diagrams and three-cation compositions with emergent optical properties guide the discovery of materials with complex phase-dependent properties, as demonstrated by the discovery of a Co-Ta-Sn substitutional alloy oxide with tunable transparency, catalytic activity, and stability in strong acid electrolytes. These results required close coupling of data validation to experiment design to generate a reliable end-to-end high-throughput workflow for accelerating scientific discovery.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the relationship between the need for continuing care services and influencing factors, social support, readiness for discharge among discharged pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 170 patients from a database of discharged patients with PTB from September 2023 to January 2024. A demographic and disease characteristics questionnaire, continuing care services basic modality questionnaire, continuing care services need questionnaire, the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), and the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale (RHDS) were used for this investigation. Univariate analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the associated factors. RESULTS: The mean total score for the need for continuing care services among patients with PTB discharged from the hospital was (121.61 ± 22.98). The dimension with the highest score was health education guidance need. Compared to the the original hospital medical personnel, the primary source of care information after discharge was the local medical institutions was statistically significant and negatively correlated with continuing care service need (P = 0.005). Social support was positively associated with need for continuing care services (P = 0.042). CONCLUSION: Discharged PTB patients had a high degree of continuing care service need. Factors influencing the need for continuing care services are the primary source of care information after discharge was the local medical institutions, the social support. Medical staff need to provide targeted continuing care services based on relevant influencing factors to meet the discharge needs of patients.

Cervical cancer (CC) remains one of the most common female malignancies, with higher incidence and mortality rates. more than 99% of CCs are associated with persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus. In view of the growing evidence that HPV 16 E6 and E7, two key oncoproteins encoded by HPV 16, regulate the expression of many other multifunctional genes and downstream effectors that contribute to the development of CC. Herein, we undertook a comprehensive effort into how HPV16 E6, E7 oncogenes affect the progression of CC cells. Previous studies have shown that ICAT expression was significantly increased in CC and had a pro-cancer effect. We observed that knockdown of HPV16 E6, E7 expression in SiHa and CasKi cells resulted in significant inhibition of ICAT expression and upregulation of miR-23b-3p expression. Besides, dual luciferase assays confirmed that ICAT was a target gene of miR-23b-3p, and negatively modulated by miR-23b-3p. Functional experiments showed that the overexpression of miR-23b-3p suppressed malignant behaviors of CC cells, such as migration, invasion and EMT. The overexpression of ICAT counteracted the suppressive effect of miR-23b-3p on HPV16-positive CC cells. Furthermore, after the knockdown of HPV16 E6 and E7, the inhibition of miR-23b-3p could increase the ICAT expression and rescue the siRNA HPV16 E6, E7-mediated suppressive impact on the aggressiveness of SiHa and CaSki cells. Collectively, our findings uncover that HPV16 E6, E7/miR-23b-3p/ ICAT axis plays an important role in HPV16-positive CC pathogenesis, which may serve as a promising therapeutic target for HPV16-associated CC.

Organoid culture is an approach that allows three-dimensional growth for stem cells to self-organize and develop multicellular structures. Intestinal organoids have been widely used to study cellular or molecular processes in stem cell and cancer research. These cultures possess the ability to maintain cellular complexity as well as recapitulate many properties of the human intestinal epithelium, thereby providing an ideal in vitro model to investigate cellular and molecular signaling pathways. These include, but are not limited to, the mechanisms required for maintaining balanced populations of epithelial cells. Notch signaling is one of the major pathways of regulating stem cell functions in the gut, driving proliferation and controlling cell fate determination. Notch also plays an important role in regulating tumor progression and metastasis. Understanding how Notch pathway regulates epithelial regeneration and differentiation by using intestinal organoids is critical for studying both homeostasis and pathogenesis of intestinal stem cells that can lead to discoveries of new targets for drug development to treat intestinal diseases. In addition, use of patient-derived organoids can provide effective personalized medicine. This review summarizes the current literature regarding epithelial Notch pathways regulating intestinal homeostasis and regeneration, highlighting the use of organoid cultures and their potential therapeutic applications.

Controlling the interaction between photons is one of the important technologies applied to quantum information processing at the few-photon level. We investigate the two-photon interaction via a Ξ-type atom, where one atomic transition is coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide, and the other transition is coupled to a cavity field. Whether the cavity is initially in the vacuum state or not, determines the effective configuration of the quantum emitter. When the cavity is in the vacuum state, only one bound state appears. We further found that the joint probability of transmitted photons oscillates with their spatial separation due to the coexistence of two bound states, if the cavity is in fock state |n〉 (n ≠ 0). With the incoming wave function consists entirely of plane waves, we present the exact out-state function that exhibit the bunching and antibunching behaviors. And, we discuss in detail with the behaviors of varying both the photon pair energy(E) and the energy difference between the two photons (Δ). Moreover, the spatial attraction and repulsion between the two transmitted photons can be controlled by the parameters of the cavity.

Photocatalytic water splitting to hydrogen is a sustainable energy conversion method. However, there is a lack of sufficiently accurate measurement methods for an apparent quantum yield (AQY) and a relative hydrogen production rate (rH2) at the moment. Thus, a more scientific and reliable evaluation method is highly required to allow the quantitative comparison of photocatalytic activity. Herein, a simplified kinetic model of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution was established, the corresponding photocatalytic kinetic equation was deduced, and a more accurate calculation method is proposed for the AQY and the maximum hydrogen production rate vH2,max. At the same time, new physical quantities, absorption coefficient kL and specific activity SA, were proposed to sensitively characterize the catalytic activity. The scientificity and practicality of the proposed model and the physical quantities were systematically verified from the theoretical and experimental levels.

Neuromuscular symptoms may develop or persist after resolution of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Besides residual sensorimotor symptoms associated with acute neuromuscular complications of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19), such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, critical illness neuromyopathy, and rhabdomyolysis, patients may report persistent autonomic symptoms, sensory symptoms, and muscle symptoms in the absence of these acute complications, including palpitations, orthostatic dizziness and intolerance, paresthesia, myalgia, and fatigue. These symptoms may be associated with long COVID, also known as post-COVID-19 conditions or postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection, which may significantly impact quality of life. Managing these symptoms represents a challenge for health-care providers. Recent advances have identified small-fiber neuropathy as a potential etiology that may underlie autonomic dysfunction and paresthesia in some long COVID patients. The pathogenic mechanisms underlying myalgia and fatigue remain elusive and need to be investigated. Herein we review the current state of knowledge regarding the evaluation and management of patients with persistent post-COVID-19 neuromuscular symptoms.

The introduction of metal vacancies into n-type semiconductors could efficiently construct intimate contact interface p-n homojunctions to accelerate the separation of photogenerated carriers. In this work, a cationic surfactant occupancy method was developed to synthesize an indium-vacancy (VIn)-enriched p-n amorphous/crystal homojunction of indium sulfide (A/C-IS) for sodium lignosulfonate (SL) degradation. The amount of VIn in the A/C-IS could be regulated by varying the content of added cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Meanwhile, the steric hindrance of CTAB produced mesopores and macropores, providing transfer channels for SL. The degradation rates of A/C-IS to SL were 8.3 and 20.9 times higher than those of crystalline In2S3 and commercial photocatalyst (P25), respectively. The presence of unsaturated dangling bonds formed by VIn reduced the formation energy of superoxide radicals (•O2-). In addition, the inner electric field between the intimate contact interface p-n A/C-IS promoted the migration of electron-hole pairs. A reasonable degradation pathway of SL by A/C-IS was proposed based on the above mechanism. Moreover, the proposed method could also be applicable for the preparation of p-n homojunctions with metal vacancies from other sulfides.

BACKGROUND: Although both EQ-5D-3L(3L) and EQ-5D-5L(5L) have demonstrated good measurement properties in several patient populations, there is currently limited evidence comparing the measurement properties of 3L and 5L in family caregivers (FCs) of cancer patients. PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the measurement properties of 3L and 5L in a sample of family caregivers of cancer patients. METHODS: A consecutive sample of FCs of cancer patients recruited from three tertiary hospitals were invited to complete the two versions of the EQ-5D in two rounds of interviews. We compared i) the ceiling effect using the McNemar's test, ii) test-retest reliability using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Cohen's Kappa, iii) convergent validity using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, iv) known-group validity using F-statistic, v) and discriminant capacity using ordinal logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 416 FCs completed the baseline questionnaire and 120 caregivers completed the follow-up questionnaire. Ceiling effects were smaller in 5L (12.5%) than in 3L (20.7%). The convergent validity (r = 0.344-0.771), known-groups validity (Fratio5L/3L = 2.06-4.09), discriminant capacity (ES = 0.341-0.396), and test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.725) of the 5L were slightly better than those of the 3L in China. CONCLUSION: The current study found both 3L and 5L to be suitable for use by FCs of cancer patients. However, 5L showed superior measurement properties compared to 3L and therefore could be the preferred instrument when EQ-5D data of cancer patients FCs is required.

Tissue-resident macrophages can originate from embryonic or adult hematopoiesis. They play important roles in a wide range of biological processes including tissue remodeling during organogenesis, organ homeostasis, repair following injury, and immune response to pathogens. Although the origins and tissue-specific functions of resident macrophages have been extensively studied in many other tissues, they are not well characterized in skeletal muscle. In the present study, we have characterized the ontogeny of skeletal muscle-resident macrophages by lineage tracing and bone marrow transplant experiments. We demonstrate that skeletal muscle-resident macrophages originate from both embryonic hematopoietic progenitors located within the yolk sac and fetal liver as well as definitive hematopoietic stem cells located within the bone marrow of adult mice. Single-cell-based transcriptome analyses revealed that skeletal muscle-resident macrophages are distinctive from resident macrophages in other tissues as they express a distinct complement of transcription factors and are composed of functionally diverse subsets correlating to their origins. Functionally, skeletal muscle-resident macrophages appear to maintain tissue homeostasis and promote muscle growth and regeneration.

Humans are continuously exposed to a variety of toxicants and chemicals which is exacerbated during and after environmental catastrophes such as floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes. The hazardous chemical mixtures generated during these events threaten the health and safety of humans and other living organisms. This necessitates the development of rapid decision-making tools to facilitate mitigating the adverse effects of exposure on the key modulators of the endocrine system, such as the estrogen receptor alpha (ERα), for example. The mechanistic stages of the estrogenic transcriptional activity can be measured with high content/high throughput microscopy-based biosensor assays at the single-cell level, which generates millions of object-based minable data points. By combining computational modeling and experimental analysis, we built a highly accurate data-driven classification framework to assess the endocrine disrupting potential of environmental compounds. The effects of these compounds on the ERα pathway are predicted as being receptor agonists or antagonists using the principal component analysis (PCA) projections of high throughput, high content image analysis descriptors. The framework also combines rigorous preprocessing steps and nonlinear machine learning algorithms, such as the Support Vector Machines and Random Forest classifiers, to develop highly accurate mathematical representations of the separation between ERα agonists and antagonists. The results show that Support Vector Machines classify the unseen chemicals correctly with more than 96% accuracy using the proposed framework, where the preprocessing and the PCA steps play a key role in suppressing experimental noise and unraveling hidden patterns in the dataset.

BACKGROUND: The importance of family resilience in the recovery of stroke patients has been demonstrated in numerous studies. However, little is known about post-stroke family resilience. AIMS: To investigate the family resilience of stroke patients from a patient-caregiver dyadic perspective during the first 6 months after stroke. METHODS: A total of 288 dyads of patients diagnosed with a first-episode stroke and their principal caregivers were recruited from neurology departments of 7 tertiary hospitals in Shanghai and Shangqiu, China. Family resilience and family function were assessed during hospitalisation and at 1, 3 and 6 months after stroke. K-means cluster analysis was used to identify different clusters of family resilience based on family resilience of patients and caregivers during hospitalisation. The STROBE guidelines for observational studies were followed. RESULTS: Three clusters of family resilience were identified with distinct trajectories: cluster of high resilience (HR), cluster of low resilience (LR) and cluster of discrepant resilience (DR). The level of family function was consistently highest in cluster HR and lowest in cluster with LR at four time points. Most (69.8%) families fell into the cluster with low resilience and low family function. Characteristics such as the Rankin scores and education level of patients, education level of caregivers, family monthly income and living district were different among the three clusters. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that family resilience was linked to the family functioning of patients with a first-episode stroke, however, the levels of resilience in most families were low. Factors, including the education level, family income and stroke severity of patients were revealed to influence the family resilience and its development. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: A resilience-focused approach to family-related treatment is beneficial for families. Therefore, understanding family resilience among stroke survivors is needed to inform the development of interventions for enhancing the recovery of stroke families.

The development of Dai medicine is relatively slow, and Zanthoxylum has great economic and medicinal value. It is still difficult to obtain medicinal components from the low-polarity parts of Zanthoxylum belonging to Dai medicine. In this study, we introduced one simple and quick strategy of separating target compounds from the barks of Z. acanthopodium var. timbor by high-performance countercurrent chromatography (HPCCC) with an off-line anti-inflammatory activity screening mode. The development of this strategy was based on the TLC-based generally useful estimation of solvent systems (GUESS) method and HPCCC in combination. This paper presented a rapid method for obtaining target anti-inflammatory compounds. Three lignins were enriched by HPCCC with an off-line inhibition mode of nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophage cells, using petroleum ether-ethyl acetate-methanol-water (3:2:3:2) as the solvent system. The results showed that this method was simple and practical and could be applied to trace the anti-inflammatory components of the low-polarity part in Dai medicine.

The limitations of current medications for treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA) emphasize the urgent need for the development of new drugs. This study aimed to investigate the potential anti-RA mechanism of amygdalin using tandem mass tag (TMT)-based quantitative proteomics technology. First, the anti-RA activity of amygdalin was evaluated in a Complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced rat model. Then, the roles and importance of proteins in the extracted rat joint tissue were evaluated using TMT-based quantitative proteomics technology. A bioinformatics analysis was used to analyze differentially abundant proteins (DAPs). A proteomics analysis identified 297 DAPs in the amygdalin group compared with the model group, of which 53 upregulated proteins and 51 downregulated proteins showed opposite regulatory trends to the DAPs produced after modeling. According to enrichment analyses of the DAPs, the signaling pathways with a high correlation degree were determined to be the complement and coagulation cascades. Furthermore, western blotting and molecular docking were used to further validate the key node proteins, e.g., complement C1s subcomponent (C1s), component C3 (C3) and kininogen 1 (Kng1). These results suggest that amygdalin may be a promising agent for treating RA by regulating the complement and coagulation cascades.
