RESUMEN

Serine metabolism is involved in the fate decisions of immune cells; however, whether and how de novo serine synthesis shapes innate immune cell function remain unknown. Here, we first demonstrated that inflammatory macrophages have high expression of phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (PHGDH, the rate-limiting enzyme of de novo serine synthesis) via nuclear factor κB signaling. Notably, the pharmacological inhibition or genetic modulation of PHGDH limits macrophage interleukin (IL)-1ß production through NAD+ accumulation and subsequent NAD+-dependent SIRT1 and SIRT3 expression and activity. Mechanistically, PHGDH not only sustains IL-1ß expression through H3K9/27 acetylation-mediated transcriptional activation of Toll-like receptor 4 but also supports IL-1ß maturation via NLRP3-K21/22/24/ASC-K21/22/24 acetylation-mediated activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. Moreover, mice with myeloid-specific depletion of Phgdh show alleviated inflammatory responses in lipopolysaccharide-induced systemic inflammation. This study reveals a network by which a metabolic enzyme, involved in de novo serine synthesis, mediates post-translational modifications and epigenetic regulation to orchestrate IL-1ß production, providing a potential inflammatory disease target.

AIMS: This study describes the incidence of fatigue in kidney transplant recipients and analyses the relationship between physiological factors, psychological factors, situational factors and fatigue in kidney transplant recipients. BACKGROUND: Fatigue, as a common symptom after kidney transplantation, is affected by many factors, but the influence of some factors on the fatigue of kidney transplant recipients is still controversial. DESIGN: This cross-sectional study was designed based on the theory of unpleasant symptoms. METHODS: Our survey involved 307 participants attending the kidney transplant outpatient clinic of a tertiary Class A hospital (Changsha, Hunan, China). Data were collected between February and April 2021 using a structured questionnaire and electronic medical records. Data were analysed using IBM SPSS 25.0 (SPSS Inc.) RESULTS: It was found that the incidence of fatigue in kidney transplant recipients was 53.1%. According to the binary logistic regression analysis, sleep quality, hypokalemia, anxiety, depression and education level were independent risk factors for fatigue in kidney transplant recipients. CONCLUSION: The incidence of fatigue in kidney transplant recipients was high and was influenced by physical, psychological and situational factors. Clinical nurses should assess fatigue levels in a timely and multidimensional manner in clinical practice and provide effective and scientific guidance about fatigue self-coping and symptom management for kidney transplant recipients.

Feces are enriched with microRNAs (miRNAs) that shape the gut microbiota. These miRNAs are differentially expressed in the feces of healthy and diseased subjects. However, whether fecal miRNAs in subjects with inflammatory bowel diseases are involved in regulating microbiota composition and whether they have any beneficial effects remains unknown. Here, we studied the fecal microbiome composition and miRNA abundance in mice with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis and mice at the recovery phase to explore different miRNAs expressed, their relations with microbial abundance, and their effects on colitis. We found that miR-142a-3p expression was significantly increased in the feces of mice recovered from colitis and that it could alleviate disease symptoms in mice treated with DSS in a microbiome-dependent manner. Specifically, miR-142a-3p promoted the growth of Lactobacillus reuteri, which had a high abundance in the feces of mice recovered from colitis, by regulating transcripts of polA and locus tag LREU_RS03575. Moreover, L. reuteri, as well as its metabolite reuterin, could alleviate DSS-induced disease symptoms. These results highlight the role of fecal miR-142a-3p in the prevention of colitis. We propose that the feces of subjects who have recovered from diseases might be enriched with miRNAs with preventive effects against those diseases.

Tribasic zinc sulfate (TBZ) is insoluble in water and chemically less active than zinc sulfate, making it more suitable to be used in pig diet. To investigate the effects of TBZ on the growth performance, gut morphology, and zinc transporter expression levels, we performed a single-factor experiment and 168 pigs were allocated to three groups with seven pens per treatment. Pigs were either fed a basal diet without zinc supplementation (control group), or a basal diet supplemented with TBZ at 100 mg/kg diet (LTBZ group) or 1000 mg/kg diet (HTBZ group). We found that daily weight gain and feed intake were higher in the LTBZ group than in the HTBZ and control groups. The pigs in the LTBZ group had a higher villus height and villus height/crypt depth ratio when compared with other pigs. Moreover, the pigs in the LTBZ group exhibited higher mRNA expression levels of solute carrier family 39 and lower expression levels of solute carrier family 30 than those fed the HTBZ-supplemented diet. Together, these results indicate that TBZ may potentially be used as a dietary zinc source for young growing pigs and that dietary supplementation with LTBZ benefits growth performance and gut morphology.

BACKGROUND: Since the implementation of China's two-child policy in 2016, the number of re-pregnant women after cesarean section has increased significantly. These women are more prone to fear of childbirth compared with primiparas due to their history of scarred uterus leading to a more complicated delivery process, which poses a great threat to their physical and mental health. However, there is currently limited research on the problem in China. The aim of this study was to assess fear of childbirth and its predictors in re-pregnant women after cesarean section in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional multicenter study was conducted in three hospitals from June 7 to December 7, 2020, in Changsha, China. Study hospitals were selected using a random sampling technique. Participants were selected using a convenience sampling technique. Three hundred fifty-eight women during the third trimester of pregnancy who were older than 18 years, having a history of CS(s), and not having major physical or mental health problems were included. Fear of childbirth and its predictors were evaluated using the Childbirth Attitude Questionnaire, the short form of the 32-item Chinese Childbirth Self-Efficacy Inventory, the Social Support Rating Scale, and the demographic-obstetric data sheet. After checking for completeness, data were exported to statistical software for analysis. Both univariate analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were computed to assess fear of childbirth and its predictors. Statistical significance was declared at a P-value of < 0.05. RESULTS: The average score of fear of childbirth was 43.76 (standard deviation = 5.27, range 17-58). Number of cesarean sections, experience with previous cesarean section, childbirth self-efficacy and social support were significantly associated with fear of childbirth (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, re-pregnant women after cesarean section in China had moderate fear of childbirth, and the number of cesarean sections, experience with previous cesarean section, childbirth self-efficacy and social support were predictors of fear of childbirth. It is important for healthcare professionals to find re-pregnant women after cesarean section at high risk of fear of childbirth and provide appropriate services during pregnancy.

Serine has critical roles in maintaining cell growth and redox balance in cancer cells. However, the role of exogenous serine played in oxidative response and proliferation in normal mammalian intestine need to be further elucidated. We used a mouse model and intestinal porcine epithelial cells (IPEC-J2) to reveal that exogenous serine deficiency did not lead to redox imbalance and inhibition of proliferation in the intestine. However, serine deficiency exacerbated oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, apoptosis, and inhibition of proliferation in IPEC-J2 cells challenged by hydrogen peroxide, while serine supplementation rescued redox imbalance and those proliferation defects. Importantly, serine supplementation restored the glutathione content and decreased the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, while no such effects were observed when glutathione synthesis was inhibited. Additionally, serine supplementation increased nuclear nrf2 expression in IPEC-J2 cells. These results suggested that serine alleviates oxidative stress through supporting glutathione synthesis and activating nrf2 signaling. We further found that serine supplementation activated the mTOR pathway, while inhibition of mTOR diminished the effects of serine on promoting proliferation, suggesting critical roles of the mTOR pathway in this context. Taken together, our study underlines the importance of serine in the maintenance of redox status and proliferation in the intestine and reveals a novel potential mechanism that mediates these effects.

To investigate the cumulative effects of maternal supplementation with nucleotides in the form of uridine (UR) on fatty acid and amino acid constituents of neonatal piglets, fifty-two sows in late gestation were assigned randomly into the control (CON) group (fed a basal diet) or UR group (fed a basal diet with 150 g/t UR). Samples of neonates were collected during farrowing. Results showed that supplementing with UR in sows' diet significantly decreased the birth mortality of pigs (P = 0·05), and increased serum total cholesterol, HDL and LDL of neonatal piglets (P < 0·05). Moreover, the amino acid profile of serum and liver of neonatal piglets was affected by the addition of UR in sows' diets (P < 0·05). Furthermore, an up-regulation of mRNA expression of energy metabolism-related genes, including fatty acid elongase 5, fatty acid desaturase 1, hormone-sensitive lipase and cholesterol-7a-hydroxylase, was observed in the liver of neonates from the UR group. Additionally, a decrease in placental gene expression of excitatory amino acid transporters 2, excitatory amino acid transporter 3 and neutral AA transporter 1 in the UR group was concurrently observed (P < 0·05), and higher protein expression of phosphorylated protein kinase B, raptor, PPARα and PPARγ in placenta from the UR group was also observed (P < 0·05). Together, these results showed that maternal UR supplementation could regulate placental nutrient transport, largely in response to an alteration of mTORC1-PPAR signalling, thus regulating the nutrition metabolism of neonatal piglets and improving reproductive performance.

The present study investigated the effect of Bacillus subtilis DSM 29784 (Ba) and enzymes (xylanase and ß-glucanases; Enz), alone or in combination (BE) as antibiotic replacements, on the growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, immune response and the intestinal barrier of broiler chickens. In total, 1200 1-d-old broilers were randomly assigned to five dietary treatments, each with six replicate pens of forty birds for 63 d as follows: (a) basal diet (control), supplemented with (b) 1 × 109 colony-forming units (cfu)/kg Ba, (c) 300 mg/kg Enz, (d) 1 × 109 cfu/kg Ba and 300 mg/kg Enz and (e) 250 mg/kg enramycin (ER). Ba, Enz and BE, similar to ER, decreased the feed conversion rate, maintained intestinal integrity with a higher villus height:crypt depth ratio and increased the numbers of goblet cells. The BE group exhibited higher expression of claudin-1 and mucin 2 than the other four groups. BE supplementation significantly increased the α-diversity and ß-diversity of the intestinal microbiota and markedly enhanced lipase activity in the duodenal mucosa. Serum endotoxin was significantly decreased in the BE group. Compared with those in the control group, increased superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities were observed in the jejunal mucosa of the Ba and BE groups, respectively. In conclusion, the results suggested that dietary treatment with Ba, Enz or BE has beneficial effects on growth performance and anti-oxidative capacity, and BE had better effects than Ba or Enz alone on digestive enzyme activity and the intestinal microbiota. Ba or Enz could be used as an alternative to antibiotics for broiler chickens.

Heavy metal pollution of soils has been worsening increasingly in China, which brings significant health risk to human, it is critical to investigate the sources of heavy metals in agricultural soils and explore the effects of heavy metal accumulation in crops. In this paper, the sources of cadmium (Cd) and their effects on Cd accumulation in soil and rice grown on urban farmland in Changzhutan were investigated. Among the main Cd sources (irrigation water, commercial fertilizer, and atmospheric deposition), the input flux of atmospheric deposition accounted for 76.36%-98.25% of total input flux, significantly higher than the input fluxes of irrigation water and commercial fertilizer. Manure fertilizer was also an important source of Cd in livestock breeding areas. The accumulation behaviors of Cd in soils and plants presented significant spatial variation among the study areas. Higher Cd input flux from atmospheric deposition resulted in higher Cd bioavailability in soil and more Cd accumulation in rice, and the newly deposited Cd contributed 7.35-41.23% in rice tissues. The use of manure fertilizer increased the soil pH and amount of available Cd in soil, as well as the accumulation of Cd in rice roots. Based on sequential extraction, acid-extractable Cd accounted for approximately 52.54%-61.88% of total Cd in atmospherically deposited particles in the study area, resulting in a high proportion of acid-extractable Cd in soil. This study provides useful reference data on the sources of Cd and its bioavailability in soil and rice.

The purpose of this meta-analysis was to assess the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of living kidney donors using the 36-item Medical Outcomes Short-Form-36 questionnaire (SF-36). A systematic search of the Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Elsevier/ScienceDirect, Wanfang, Weipu, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases for studies that used the SF-36 to evaluate the HRQoL of living kidney donors up to April 2020 was performed. Stata version 12.0 (StataCorp LLC, College Station, TX, USA) was used for meta-analysis. In all, nine studies comprising 802 living kidney donors were included in this meta-analysis. The research revealed that living kidney donors were inferior in physical health to the general population with regard to bodily pain (BP), superior to the general population in terms of general health (GH), and exhibited no significant difference from the general population in physical function (PF) and role-physical (RP). In the case of psychological health, living kidney donation had a positive impact on well-screened living kidney donors. Based on our results, clinicians can inform potential kidney donors that there is a low risk in donating a kidney, which contributes to provide guidance to design counseling interventions for both kidney recipients and donors.

Inflammation and oxidative stress play key roles in the process of aging and age-related diseases. Since serine availability plays important roles in the support of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory defense system, we explored whether serine deficiency affects inflammatory and oxidative status in D-galactose-induced aging mice. Male mice were randomly assigned into four groups: mice fed a basal diet, mice fed a serine- and glycine-deficient (SGD) diet, mice injected with D-galactose and fed a basal diet, and mice injected with D-galactose and fed an SGD diet. The results showed that D-galactose resulted in oxidative and inflammatory responses, while serine deficiency alone showed no such effects. However, serine deficiency significantly exacerbated oxidative stress and inflammation in D-galactose-treated mice. The composition of fecal microbiota was affected by D-galactose injection, which was characterized by decreased microbiota diversity and downregulated ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes, as well as decreased proportion of Clostridium XIVa. Furthermore, serine deficiency exacerbated these changes. Additionally, serine deficiency in combination with D-galactose injection significantly decreased fecal butyric acid content and gene expression of short-chain fatty acid transporters (Slc16a3 and Slc16a7) and receptor (Gpr109a) in the brain. Finally, serine deficiency exacerbated the decrease of expression of phosphorylated AMPK and the increase of expression of phosphorylated NFκB p65, which were caused by D-galactose injection. In conclusion, our results suggested that serine deficiency exacerbated inflammation and oxidative stress in D-galactose-induced aging mice. The involved mechanisms might be partially attributed to the changes in the microbiota-gut-brain axis affected by serine deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Nucleotides play an important role in the regulation of cellular energy and protein homeostasis, which facilitate the repair, recovery and repletion of tissue function. This study tested the effects of maternal uridine (UR) supplementation during late pregnancy and lactation of sows on the immune function of the small intestine in neonatal and suckling piglets. RESULTS: Results showed that compared to the control group, maternal dietary UR supplementation significantly decreased incidence of diarrhea in suckling piglets (P < 0.01); and increased both duodenal and ileal average villus height (P < 0.01) as well as villus height/crypt depth in ileum (P = 0.017) in neonatal piglets. RT-qPCR results showed that maternal UR supplementation decreased mRNA expression of claudin-1 in jejunum and ileum of neonatal piglets (P < 0.05), while significantly increased mRNA expression of claudin-1 in duodenum and jejunum of suckling piglets. Furthermore, in suckling piglets, maternal dietary UR supplementation increased mRNA expression of IL-6, IL-8 and IL-1ß in duodenum, jejunum and ileum (P < 0.05), increased IL-10 expression in both jejunal and ileal mucosa (P < 0.05) and increased mRNA expression of IKB and TLR4 in ileal mucosa (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that maternal dietary supplementation with UR contributed to reducing incidence of diarrhea by regulating cytokine secretion and intestinal mucosal barrier function in suckling piglets. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

This study was conducted to detect the potential relationship between changed plasma metabolites, intestinal microbiota and the weaning-to-oestrous interval in multiparous sows after weaning. Multiparous sows were allocated to two groups after weaning: the oestrous group (n = 15) with a weaning-to-oestrous interval ≤7 days or the anoestrous group (n = 15) with a weaning-to-oestrous interval >14 days. The levels of plasma reproductive hormones: oestradiol, follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, plasma total protein; blood urea nitrogen; cholesterol; high-density lipoprotein; and ammonia (NH3 ) were significantly lower in the anoestrous sows compared with the oestrous sows (p < .05). The plasma metabolomics analysis identified 14 metabolites (lactose, l-cysteine, cytosine, hydantoin, palmitoleic acid, arachidic acid, linoleic acid methyl ester, α-ketoglutaric acid, N(ε)-trimethyllysine, threo-ß-hydroxyaspartate, 3-(3-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid and others) with lower concentrations and 12 metabolites (noradrenaline, 5-dihydrocortisone, p-cresol, 1,4-cyclohexanedione, 2,3-dimethylsuccinic acid and others) with higher concentrations in the anoestrous group compared with the oestrous group (p < .05). The 16S rRNA pyrosequencing analysis showed the relative increase in abundance of the Prevotella and the Bacteroides at the genus level in the anoestrous group (p < .05). At the phylum level, lower proportions of Firmicutes and Lentisphaerae were observed in the anoestrous group (p < .05). This study provided a comprehensive assessment of metabolic differences in the blood and differences in the gut microbiome composition between anoestrous and oestrous sows. And suggesting that this profiling approach may offer new insights into explaining the alteration of the gut microbiota and blood metabolomics are correlated with sex hormone secretion and the weaning-to-oestrous interval of sows after weaning.

METHODS: A case-control study was conducted to collect 410 PPP patients admitted to a general hospital in Changsha from December 2013 to February 2018. Two hundred and fifty cases of PPP with placenta accreta were treated as a case group, and 160 cases of PPP without placenta accreta were treated as a control group. The relationship between clinical data and placenta accreta was analyzed, and the pregnancy outcomes of PPP was observed according to different types of placenta previa. RESULTS: Logistic regression showed that delivery times were more than 2 (OR=3.221), cesarean section times were more than 2 (OR=3.048), central placenta previa (OR=3.607), placental attachment site (anterior wall) (OR=4.592) were independent risk factors for PPP with placenta accrete (P<0.05). Living in cities (OR=0.614), systematic prenatal examination (OR=0.590) were protective factors (P<0.05). Average intraoperative blood loss, postpartum bleeding rate, hysterectomy rate in the central group were all higher than those in the marginal and low-set group. The incidence rates of ICU transfer, complications, and hospital stay were higher or longer than those in the marginal group (P'<0.008). There was no significant difference in stillbirth rate among the 4 groups (P>0.05). Preterm delivery rate was higher than that of the marginal and low-set group, and the birth weight was lower than that of the low-set group. Apgar score at 1 min and asphyxia rate were lower and higher than those of the other 3 groups, respectively (P'<0.008). CONCLUSIONS: Delivery times (>2), cesarean section times (≥2), central placenta previa, placenta attachment site (anterior wall) are independent risk factors for PPP with placenta accreta. Living in cities, systematic prenatal examination were protective factors. The central PPP is more likely to lead to postpartum hemorrhage, hysterectomy, and increases in the risk of preterm birth, low birth weight as well as asphyxia of fetus, which seriously threatens maternal and fetal life.

The effects of methionine restriction on lipid metabolism in the liver and adipose tissue have been well determined, while its effects on the skeletal muscle have not been fully studied. The present study was conducted to explore whether methionine restriction in weanling piglets would affect skeletal muscle lipid content and fiber type and whether such changes would further affect the meat quality of growing-finishing pigs. A total of 28 crossbred healthy barrows weaned at the age of 21 days were randomly allotted to two treatments and fed either a methionine-restricted diet (0.25% methionine) or a control diet (0.48% methionine) for 4 weeks. After this period, the pigs were fed the same basal diet throughout the growing-finishing period. The results showed that methionine restriction during the post-weanling period of piglets enhanced lipid accumulation and promoted the formation of slow-twitch muscle fibers in the skeletal muscle, while it had no effects on growth performance. We hypothesized that such effects might be mediated by AMPK-PGC-1α signaling pathway. Furthermore, the effects of methionine restriction on the skeletal muscle of pigs at the post-weanling period had a subsequent effect on growing-finishing pigs, which showed a higher intramuscular fat content. Our results suggest that dietary methionine restriction in piglets at an early stage might be an alternative method for improving meat quality.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the correlation of quality of life with self-care efficacy and social support in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma after radiotherapy.
 Methods: A total of 179 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma at 3 months after radiotherapy were surveyed using self-designed general information questionnaire, European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core-30 (EORTC QLQ-C30 V3.0), Chinese-version of Strategies Used by People to Promote Health (C-SUPPH), and Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS).
 Results: The score of cognitive function was the highest, while the score of social function was the lowest. The score of related symptoms was 22.21±10.24, the overall score for quality of life was 52.46±17.96, the score of self-care efficacy was 62.14±14.50, and the score of social support was 56.03±7.63. Self-care efficacy of patients with nasopharyngeal cancer after radiotherapy was positively correlated with 5 functional areas of quality of life and overall quality of life, and negatively correlated with relevant symptoms (P<0.01). Social support was positively correlated with physical function, social function and overall quality of life (P<0.01), and negatively correlated with relevant symptoms (P<0.05). Multiple regression analysis showed that self-care efficacy could predict 5 functional areas of life quality, relevant symptoms, overall quality of life and social support predicted social function in quality of life.
 Conclusion: Self-care efficacy and social support for patients with nasopharyngeal cancer after radiotherapy can affect their quality of life. Nursing staff should pay attention to improving the self-care efficacy of patients, guide them to actively seek or obtain social support, and in turn to improve their quality of life.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Early weaning often causes gut dysfunction. Since serine alleviates oxidative stress and inflammatory response which are accompany with early weaning, we conducted the study to explore whether serine improves intestinal function in early-weaned piglets. METHODS: Twenty-eight weaned piglets (aged 21 d) were fed either a basal diet or a basal diet plus 0.2% serine. We determined the effects of dietary serine supplementation on intestinal morphology by hematoxylin and eosin staining, expression of tight junction proteins (TJPs) by immunoblotting and immunofluorescence, expression of inflammatory cytokines and apoptosis markers by RT-qPCR and the level of antioxidant enzymes with ELISA kits in early-weaned piglets. RESULTS: Serine supplementation increased daily body weight gain while decreasing diarrhea incidence. Both the jejunum and ileum of serine-supplemented piglets showed regularly arranged villi and microvilli. Moreover, dietary serine increased TJP expression, and alleviated apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress in the intestine of early-weaned piglets. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that serine has the potential for use as a feed additive to prevent gut dysfunction caused by weaning.

Serine deficiency has been observed in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Whether serine supplementation has any beneficial effects on the prevention of NAFLD remains unknown. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of serine supplementation on hepatic oxidative stress and steatosis and its related mechanisms. Forty male C57BL/6J mice (9week-old) were randomly assigned into four groups (n=10) and fed: i) a low-fat diet; ii) a low-fat diet supplemented with 1% (wt:vol) serine; iii) a high-fat (HF) diet; and iv) a HF diet supplemented with 1% serine, respectively. Palmitic acid (PA)-treated primary hepatocytes separated from adult mice were also used to study the effects of serine on oxidative stress. The results showed that serine supplementation increased glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, and protected mice from hepatic lipid accumulation, but did not significantly decreased HF diet-induced weight gain. In addition, serine supplementation protected glutathione (GSH) antioxidant system and prevented hypermethylation in the promoters of glutathione synthesis-related genes, while decreasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) in mice fed a HF diet. Moreover, we found that serine supplementation increased phosphorylation and S-glutathionylation of AMP-activated protein kinase α subunit (AMPKα), and decreased ROS, malondialdehyde and triglyceride contents in PA-treated primary hepatocytes. However, while AMPK activity or GSH synthesis was inhibited, the abovementioned effects of serine on PA-treated primary hepatocytes were not observed. Our results suggest that serine supplementation could prevent HF diet-induced oxidative stress and steatosis by epigenetically modulating the expression of glutathione synthesis-related genes and through AMPK activation.

Hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and is associated with primary causes of mortality and morbidity throughout the world. Several studies have been carried out to evaluate the effects of a diet inducing cystathionine-ß-synthase, methyltetrafolate, folic acid, and vitamin B supplemented with methionine on the homocysteine metabolism and in lowering the plasma total homocysteine levels. A large number of molecular and biomedical studies in numerous animals, such as mice, rabbits, and pigs, have sought to elevate the plasma total homocysteine levels and to identify a disease model for human hyperhomocysteinemia. However, a specific animal model is not suitable for hyperhomocysteinemia in terms of all aspects of cardiovascular disease. In this review article, the experimental progress of animal models with plasma total homocysteine levels is examined to identify a feasible animal model of hyperhomocysteinemia for different aspects.

BACKGROUND: Recent research related to phase-feeding programmes for pig nutrition do not always account for the variation among individuals, and feeds are usually formulated to optimise the performance of the whole pig population. This study aimed at measuring the effects of a daily three-meal pattern with different dietary protein contents on pig growth performance, carcass and muscle quality traits. RESULTS: The results showed that compared with the 3C treatment, average daily gain (ADG) of pigs in the HCL treatment increased by 14.75% (P < 0.05) during period 1. The carcass weight (P = 0.006) and slaughter weight (P = 0.021) in the HCL group increased when compared with those in the 3C and LCH treatments. Moreover, the LCH feeding sequences contributed to reduce the drip loss in longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle (P < 0.05) when compared with the 3C treatment. The HCL or LCH feeding sequence contributed to increase the meat quality when compared with those receiving the 3C treatment. CONCLUSION: Collectively, our results indicate that feeding high protein meal in the morning and a gradual reduction of the protein content in meals over the day may improve muscle quality characteristics, maximise performance, and reduce the pig feed cost. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.
