BACKGROUND: Chronic pain resilience is a concept that is frequently used in research but lacks theoretical clarity. Understanding chronic pain resilience is germane to developing interventions to improve it and the overall quality of life among individuals with chronic pain. AIMS: To uncover and clarify the unique characteristics of the concept of chronic pain resilience. DESIGN: A concept analysis using Rodgers' evolutionary method. METHODS: Full-text articles published after 2000 in English were used to inform the concept analysis. Scopus, PubMed, PsychINFO, Embase, and CINAHL Plus with Full Text were utilized for literature searches. Rodgers' evolutionary approach was used to clarify the attributes, antecedents, and consequences. RESULTS: The search yielded 31 articles that were used in the analysis. The key attributes of chronic pain resilience included engagement in meaningful activities despite pain, maintaining positive psychological homeostasis, buffering against negative mental outcomes, seeking support, and self-empowerment. After considering surrogate terms, antecedents, attributes, and consequences, chronic pain resilience may be defined as the development of the capacity to successfully adapt to chronic pain. This adaptation results in a move toward optimal social, physical, mental, and behavioral functioning by balancing negative and positive psychosocial factors, despite the additional challenges brought about by living with chronic pain.

AIMS: This article aimed to examine the concept of safeguarding adults and establish an operational definition for application to practice, research and policy. DESIGN: Rodgers' evolutionary and inductive method of concept analysis was used. DATA SOURCES: A systematic search was conducted across four electronic databases, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Scopus and PubMed, covering the period from January 2014 to May 2023. This systematic database search aimed to gather a broad spectrum of research and scholarly literature to inform and support the concept analysis. A total of 10 peer-reviewed articles were reviewed using a data chart to identify the context, definitions, antecedents, attributes and consequences of safeguarding adults. RESULTS: The analysis of the included articles helped to develop a better understanding of safeguarding adults by offering a practical operational definition tailored to the specific needs of practising nurses. The implications for practice, research and policy are discussed, highlighting the potential for improving the quality of care and ensuring the well-being of adults at risk of abuse. CONCLUSION: By employing Rogers' evolutionary concept analysis method, we developed a deeper insight into safeguarding adults in health care. A synthesis of literature revealed the intricate layers and adaptations within safeguarding practices. This concept analysis lays the groundwork for future research, policy development and educational initiatives, enhancing the well-being and safety of adults at risk of abuse within care. IMPACT: By undertaking a concept analysis of the term safeguarding adults' nurses can be more prepared to engage in and reinforce the key principles of safeguarding adults, providing guidance to ensure the protection and well-being of adults at risk of abuse. AIM: To provide an analysis of legacy and legacy-oriented interventions in paediatric healthcare. DESIGN: Walker and Avant's method of concept analysis. METHODS: Using Walker and Avant's method, three defining attributes of the concept were determined, followed by antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents of legacy. RESULTS: In paediatrics, legacy is co-authored in relationships, has the capability to outlive the person or event it represents, and elicits the essence of a person or experience. Receiving legacy-oriented interventions are not a prerequisite for having a legacy, nor is death. CONCLUSION: Engaging in purposeful, individualized legacy-oriented interventions can improve coping in paediatric patients, families, and providers. By understanding the concept of legacy, providers are better equipped to provide care honouring the unique personhood, relationships, and strengths of children and families in even the most dire circumstances. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE: Understanding the scope and purpose of legacy in paediatrics assists providers in improving patient- and family-centred outcomes by designing interventions that facilitate long-term coping in patients facing a loss of or significant change in health, normalcy, or life. IMPACT: Legacy-oriented interventions are provided at most children's hospitals in the United States, yet no widespread consensus on foundation or scope has been determined. This concept analysis provides evidence-based guidelines for policy and practice in creating legacy for and with children, providing opportunities to improve quality of care for young patients and their families around the world. AIM: This study aimed to conduct a concept analysis of value in the context of community-based interventions for people affected by dementia. BACKGROUND: Concepts of value play a critical role in shaping the delivery and distribution of community-based health interventions through related concepts. However, the use and meaning of 'value' is rarely clarified limiting the term's utility in practice and research. Increasing need for community healthcare and scarce public resources means developing understanding of value in community-based interventions for people affected by dementia is timely, and may support more informed approaches to exploring, explaining and delivering value. DESIGN: Evolutionary Concept Analysis was used to systematically determine the characteristics of value. DATA SOURCES: Peer-reviewed and grey literature databases were searched between April and July 2021, with 32 pieces of literature from different disciplines included in the final sample. No limits were set for the years of literature retrieved. METHODS: Literature was thematically analysed for information on the antecedents, attributes and consequences of value. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The analysis uncovered a need and/or desire to understand the experience of people affected by or that affect interventions; and to demonstrate, prove/disprove the (best) quality and nature of results of interventions as antecedents of value. Attributes of value were stakeholder/person centred, measurable, time and context dependent and multidimensional. Consequences of the concept included shared decision-making, valuation of interventions and internal/external investment and development of interventions. CONCLUSION: Through concept analysis value can now be better understood and applied. The development of a conceptual model to illustrate the constituent elements and relationships of the concept adds transparency to where, why and how concepts of value are enabled that supports future concept development. AIM: To clarify the concept of oral frailty to provide a clear and standardized conceptual basis for further research in older people. DESIGN: Rodgers and Knafl's evolutionary concept analysis approach. METHODS: The narrative analysis detailedly extracted and synthesized the attributes of oral frailty, as well as its antecedents, consequences and related terms under the guidance of Rodgers' evolutionary method. DATA SOURCES: Multiple databases including Pubmed, CINAHL and Cochrane were searched using selected search terms 'oral frail*', 'oral health' and 'aged' respectively. Articles written between 2013 and 2023 were included, and grey literature was excluded. RESULTS: A total of 32 articles were included for further analysis and synthesis. The attributes of oral frailty were hypofunction, predisposing in nature, non-specific and multidimensional. Antecedents of prefrailty were classified into four categories, namely, sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidity, physical function and psychosocial factors. Consequences of oral frailty include three themes: increased risk of adverse outcomes, poor nutritional status and possibility of social withdrawal. Related terms that had shared attributes with oral frailty were oral health, functional dentition, oral hypofunction and deterioration of oral function. CONCLUSIONS: Oral frailty is an age-related phenomenon reflected in decreased oral function. The findings of this concept analysis are conducive to understanding and clarifying the oral frailty, which can help clinicians or other healthcare providers to consider how to distinguish oral frailty in older adults and further promote the development of this field. IMPACT: Oral frailty is increasingly recognized as an age-related phenomenon reflected in decreased oral function. As it is newly proposed, no consensus has been reached regarding the theoretical and operational concept of it. Through clarifying the concept, this paper will guide future healthcare research on oral frailty regarding the influencing factors, mechanisms and interventions, thus raising the awareness with regard to oral health among older adults. WHAT DOES THIS PAPER CONTRIBUTE TO THE WIDER GLOBAL CLINICAL COMMUNITY?: In the context of older adults, oral frailty is a concept that requires further research to guide future theoretical development, and the influencing factors, mechanisms and interventions need to be further studied. Raise awareness with regard to oral health among older people and more attention will be paid to the early identification and intervention of oral frailty, so as to further improve the quality of life of older adults.

AIM: To analyze toxic positivity and its relevance to nursing. DESIGN: Concept analysis using Schatzman's dimensional analysis approach. DATA SOURCES: Two searches were conducted using Google Scholar, JSTOR, ProQuest and CINAHL (1990-2023). Keywords included "toxic positivity" (Phase 1) and "emotional suppression," "unrealistic optimism"; "disingenuous happiness," "forced gratitude" and "logical fallacy" (Phase 2). Retained sources (1) were in English (Phases 1 and 2); (2) used 'toxic positivity' as a construct reflecting the purpose of analysis (Phase 1); and (3) demonstrated relevance towards analytical findings (Phase 2). Total analytic sources were 35. METHODS: The analytic phase, identification, elucidated conceptual dimensions and contexts. The analytic phase, logistics, examined relationships among dimensions and contexts through an iterative process resulting in a dimensional matrix/conceptual model. RESULTS: Salient dimension is Emotional Suppression with two sub-dimensions, Logical Fallacy and Forced Gratitude. Other dimensions include Unrealistic Optimism and Disingenuous Happiness. Contexts include intra- and post-paradigmatic societal shifts and intra- and post-traumatic experiences. Analysis reveals toxic positivity as an exchange between a giver and receiver with the receiver experiencing negative outcomes. CONCLUSION: The concept appears consistent in its application and use across contexts and is emerging in nursing literature. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION: Acknowledging toxic positivity in nursing may inform theoretical and future research related to improving nursing burnout, bolstering retention, and enhancing well-being. Nurses across work environments may encounter toxic positivity. Leaders should consider policy adoption and inclusion of trauma-informed practices. IMPACT: Nursing workforce issues require deeper examination of potential contributing factors. Findings suggest toxic positivity may be encountered in work environments impacting nursing at individual and system levels. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: No patient or public contribution.

AIM: To clarify the concept of fear of childbirth among pregnant women and to examine its current measure tools. BACKGROUND: Fear of childbirth is a psychological symptom, prevalent among pregnant women, which negatively impacts women's health and well-being. It has become an increasingly concerning issue in perinatal mental health. However, due to its poor conceptualization, it presents difficulty in conducting reliable assessments and identifying risk factors. METHODS: The Walker and Avant approach to concept analysis guided this review. Six bibliographic databases were systematically searched for published research from their inception date to May 2023. Additional records were identified by manually searching the reference lists of relevant studies. Quantitative and qualitative studies investigating fear of childbirth in pregnant women were included. RESULTS: Three critical attributes have been identified: cognitive impairments, affective disorders and somatic symptoms. Antecedents include perceived a real or anticipated threat of pregnancy or its outcomes, low perceived self-coping ability and unmet social support needs. Consequences include processing and avoiding behaviours. This study also identified the dimensions of fear of childbirth, including 6 primary categories and 14 subcategories. The content of five scales was analysed and none covered all domains. CONCLUSIONS: The current analysis provides healthcare providers with a more comprehensive framework to assess and identify fear of childbirth. Further research is needed to develop a suitable instrument that covers all the attributes and dimensions of this concept and assesses its severity. IMPACT: This conceptual analysis provides a comprehensive insight into the phenomenon of fear of childbirth. This will help family members, healthcare providers and policymakers to identify the psychological needs of pregnant women and improve the quality of antenatal care. AIM(S): To explore the meaning of healthcare self-management support for post-discharged stroke patients. METHOD: Rodgers' evolutionary approach was used to identify antecedents, attributes, related terms, surrogate terms and consequences. DATA SOURCE: Literature from 2012 to 2022 was searched from MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Google Scholar. RESULTS: Three antecedents preceded healthcare self-management support for post-discharged stroke patients: loss of inpatient support, preparedness for self-management and presence of self-management support. Healthcare self-management support for post-discharged stroke patients was defined by eight attributes: pre-discharge assessment and planning; provision of continuous education and training; collaborative goal-setting; reinforcement and documentation of vital information; coordination of post-discharge care; provision of rehabilitation support and promoting community reintegration; provision of counselling support; and using clear communication, patient empowerment and promoting self-efficacy. The identified consequences of the concept were as follows: improved patient outcomes; improved life quality; decreased healthcare cost; decreased re-admission rate and inpatient care burden; and decreased complication rate. CONCLUSION: Healthcare self-management support for post-discharged stroke patients is an emerging concept that can help to significantly improve stroke patients' health outcomes and life quality. However, its applicability is uncertain considering the workload, time and resources available to healthcare professionals. There is a need for future studies to focus on the feasibility and applicability of this concept in clinical practice and to identify any challenges healthcare providers may have in supporting stroke patients after discharge. IMPACT: This concept analysis brings clarity to the concept of healthcare self-management support of post-discharged stroke patients and distinguishes it from other self-management supports. It provides an opportunity for further studies and a pathway for generalized healthcare self-management support for stroke patients after discharge to improve health outcomes and quality of life. NO PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: No patients, service users, caregivers or members of the public were involved in conducting this concept analysis.

AIM: To understand how pre-registration student nurses experience moral distress and refine the concept in this population. BACKGROUND: The experience of moral distress has positive and negative effects for health professionals and negatively impacts on patient care. Moral distress is a fluid concept which permits the experience to be varied among different populations. Despite empirical research, a concept analysis has not been performed in the student nurse population. DATA SOURCES: Electronic databases were searched via Ebsco Host Complete and included Cinahl, Medline, APA Psych in March 2024. Search terms included 'Moral Distress' AND 'Student', 'Moral Distress' and 'Baccalaureate.' Search limits included articles between 2014 and 2024, English Language. Twenty-five papers were included in the review and consisted of eight quantitative studies, 11 qualitative studies, three mixed methods studies and three literature/systematic reviews. METHODS: An integrated mixed research synthesis (Sandelowski, Voils, Barroso 2006) was conducted and organized into Walker, Avant's (2005) framework of antecedents, attributes and consequences. Braun and Clarkes (2006) thematic analysis was then used to generate themes from the literature. RESULTS: Antecedents emerged as students having moral sensitivity, they recognize unethical circumstances. Attributes identified roots of moral distress. These roots include poor patient care, harm to the patient and unsafe care. Students experience of morally reprehensible events is exacerbated by the disempowerment they experience as being 'just a student'. Student nurses who do not exhibit moral courage and do not oppose immoral practices do so due to internal constraints which transpire as fear of conflict, withdrawal of learning opportunities, and fear of disruption to learning. This is influenced by their registered nurse supervisor relationship. Consequences of moral distress identify negative feelings, coping mechanisms and positive effects. CONCLUSION: The attributes of moral distress in the student nurse population have distinctive features which should be considered by nurse educators and in empirical research. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: None, as this is a concept analysis that contributes to theory development and is not empirical research.

AIMS: Research capacity strengthening (RCS) is crucial in enhancing healthcare outcomes, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), which face challenges due to limited resources, unequal access to care and the need for evidence-based decision-making. We seek to move beyond a surface-level understanding of RCS, unearthing the core attributes, the factors that precede its implementation and the transformative outcomes it generates within the LMIC healthcare landscape. DESIGN: This study employs the Walker and Avant approach to concept analysis to comprehensively explore the dimensions and attributes of RCS as it pertains to allied and public health professionals in LMICs, propose empirical referents and suggest an operational definition. DATA SOURCES: Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL and Cochrane CENTRAL were searched from inception to 27 July 2023, to identify studies on RCS in LMICs. The Walker and Avant approach to concept analysis was selected because it provides a framework for systematically examining and clarifying the meaning and implications of RCS. This method involves a structured process of defining RCS, identifying its attributes, antecedents, consequences and cases, and ultimately providing a clear understanding of its meaning and implications. Identifying empirical referents offers measurable indicators that researchers and policymakers can use to assess the effectiveness of RCS initiatives in LMICs. CONCLUSION: RCS for health professionals in LMICs involves a sustainable process that equips them with essential research skills, fostering the ability to conduct high-quality research and improve healthcare delivery in resource-constrained settings. IMPLICATIONS: RCS aims to empower health professionals to apply evidence-based practices, reduce disparities and enhance the well-being of populations in LMICs. IMPACT: Ultimately, a concept analysis of RCS empowers us to harness the full potential of research to enhance healthcare delivery, improve patient outcomes and advance the well-being of populations worldwide.

AIMS: To analyse the concept of eating experiences in people living with dementia. DESIGN: Rodgers' evolutionary method of concept analysis was used as a framework for the paper. DATA SOURCES: The literature was searched using electronic databases PubMed, Google Scholar, CINHAL, PsycInfo, Web of Science, Embase and Elsevier databases. These databases cover a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to nursing, medicine and occupational therapy. The relevant literature published from 1989 to April 2023 was thoroughly examined. Any quantitative or qualitative studies published in English focused on eating or dining experiences in people with dementia were included. REVIEW METHODS: Rodgers' evolutionary method for concept analysis was used. The attributes, antecedents, consequences and case examples of the concept were identified. RESULTS: Twenty-two articles met the inclusion criteria, identifying key attributes of self-connection, the special journey of life and self-interpretation. Antecedents, as framed by the socio-ecological model, were categorized to represent intrapersonal (personal preferences, individual culture, mealtime routines), interpersonal (social interaction) and environmental (dining room environment, policies) factors. Consequences were divided into external (nutritional health, physical health and quality of life) and internal (personhood, autonomy and independence, dignity and feeling valued and mental well-being) domains. CONCLUSION: A theoretical definition and conceptual model of eating experiences in people living with dementia was developed. The identified attributes, antecedents and consequences can be utilized in nursing education, research and intervention approaches. IMPACT: This article allows nurses and other healthcare professionals to better understand people living with dementia through the relationship between eating and interpersonal, intrapersonal and environmental aspects to develop personalized interventions and care strategies to achieve an optimal quality of life. BACKGROUND: Vicarious trauma can significantly affect the physical and mental health of nurses, as well as their ability to provide quality of care. However, the concept of vicarious trauma has received limited attention and remains controversial in the nursing context. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to clarify and define the concept of vicarious trauma as it pertains to the nursing context. METHODS: The Schwartz and Kim's three-stage hybrid concept analysis method was used to define the concept. In the theoretical phase, PubMed, CINAHL, OVID, Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest, PsycINFO, CNKI database, VIP database and Wanfang database were used using keywords "nurs*"and "vicarious trauma*", resulting in a total of 25 papers. In the fieldwork phase, we conducted participatory observations in three hospitals and semi-structured in-depth interviews with 18 clinical nurses from seven cities. In the analysis phase, the results of the previous two phases were integrated to develop a comprehensive concept of vicarious trauma in nursing. RESULTS: Based on the results of the theoretical and field phases, we propose the concept of vicarious trauma in nursing as follows: vicarious trauma is a psychological trauma impacting nurses' cognitive schema which they may experience in clinical settings or on social media, resulting from deeply empathize with the physical or emotional trauma of patients, family, or colleagues, such as patients' physical injuries or death, family's grieving feelings and colleagues' received threats and attacks. Positively, vicarious trauma can transform into vicarious post-trauma growth through repositioning and connection, nourishing nurses and promoting their personal and professional development. CONCLUSION: The concept of vicarious trauma in nursing is multidimensional and holistic. This study clarifies the concept of vicarious trauma in nursing using the hybrid concept analysis, providing a framework for future research and practice on vicarious trauma in the nursing field. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Nurses contributed to the conduct of the study by participating in the data collection via interviews.

BACKGROUND: Health-related decision-making is a complex process given the variability of treatment options, conflicting treatment plans, time constraints and variable outcomes. This complexity may result in patients experiencing decisional regret following decision-making. Nonetheless, literature on decisional regret in the healthcare context indicates inconsistent characterization and operationalization of this concept. AIM(S): To conceptually define the phenomenon of decisional regret and synthesize the state of science on patients' experiences with decisional regret. DESIGN: A concept analysis. METHODS: Rodgers' evolutionary method guided the conceptualization of this review. An interdisciplinary literature search was conducted from 2003 until 2023 using five databases, PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO and Web of Science. The search informed how the concept manifested across health-related literature. We used PRISMA-ScR checklist to guide the reporting of this review. RESULTS: Based on the analysis of 25 included articles, a conceptual definition of decisional regret was proposed. Three defining attributes underscored the negative cognitive-emotional nature of this concept, post-decisional experience relating to the decision-making process, treatment option and/or treatment outcome and an immediate or delayed occurrence. Antecedents preceding decisional regret comprised initial psychological or emotional status, sociodemographic determinants, impaired decision-making process, role regret, conflicting treatment plans and adverse treatment outcomes. Consequences of this concept included positive and negative outcomes influencing quality of life, health expectations, patient-provider relationship and healthcare experience appraisal. A conceptual model was developed to summarize the concept's characteristics. CONCLUSION: The current knowledge on decisional regret is expected to evolve with further exploration of this concept, particularly for the temporal dimension of regret experience. This review identified research, clinical and policy gaps informing our nursing recommendations for the concept's evolution. NO PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: This concept analysis examines existing literature and does not require patient-related data collection. The methodological approach does not necessitate collaboration with the public.

BACKGROUND: Fall prevention is crucial for older adults. Enhanced fall risk perception can encourage older adults to participate in fall prevention programs. However, there is still no unified definition of the concept of fall risk perception. OBJECTIVE: To explore the concept of fall risk perception in older adults. DESIGN: A concept analysis. DATA SOURCES: The literature was searched using online databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, CINAHL Complete, PsycINFO, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WangFang and SinoMed. Searches were also conducted in Chinese and English dictionaries. The literature dates from the establishment of the database to April 2023. METHODS: The methods of Walker and Avant were used to identify antecedents, attributes and consequences of the concept of "fall risk perception" in older adults. RESULTS: Eighteen publications were included eventually. The attributes were identified as: (1) dynamic change, with features of continuum and stage; (2) whether falls are taken seriously; (3) a self-assessment of the fall probability, which is driven by individual independence; and (4) involves multiple complex emotional responses. The antecedents were identified as: (1) demographic and disease factors; (2) psychological factors and (3) environmental factors. The consequences were identified as: (1) risk-taking behaviour; (2) risk compensation behaviour; (3) risk transfer behaviour; and (4) emotions. CONCLUSION: A theoretical definition of fall risk perception was identified. A conceptual model was developed to demonstrate the theoretical relationships between antecedents, attributes and consequences. This is helpful for the development of relevant theories and the formulation of fall prevention measures based on fall risk perception as the intervention target.

PURPOSE: Chronic health conditions impact nearly 40% of children in the United States, necessitating parents/caregivers to entrust healthcare responsibilities to youth aging into adulthood. Understanding the parental entrustment process may lead to tailored transition support; however, the concept lacks conceptual clarity, limiting its research and practical applications. DESIGN AND METHODS: Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis method was used to clarify the parental entrustment of healthcare responsibilities to youth with chronic health conditions. PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO databases were searched without date restrictions, including full-text, English-language, primary source articles related to parent-child healthcare transition preparation. Following title, abstract, and full-text screenings, data were analyzed using a hybrid thematic approach to identify antecedents, attributes, and consequences. RESULTS: Forty-three studies from August 1996 to September 2023 were identified. Antecedents encompass social cues and readiness factors, while attributes involve a) responsibility transfer, support, and facilitation, b) a dynamic process, c) balancing trust and fear, d) navigating conflict, and e) parental letting go. Consequences entail shifts in parental and adolescent roles. Parental entrustment is an iterative process wherein parents guide their maturing child through responsibility transfer via facilitation, support, conflict navigation, and trust building. CONCLUSION: The clarified concept underscores the role of parents/caregivers in empowering youth to manage their health. Introducing a working definition and conceptual model contributes to understanding the processes families navigate in the larger landscape of healthcare transition. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: This clarification holds implications for clinicians and policymakers, offering insights to enhance support and guidance for families navigating healthcare transition.

AIM: The aim of this concept analysis is to seek clarity as to what end-of-life conversations involve by developing a clear working definition and using model cases to conceptualise the defining attributes of an end-of-life conversations with the older person. DESIGN: Walker and Avant's eight step approach to Concept Analysis. DATA SOURCES: Four databases were searched, including PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus. A total of 339 publications were identified with 30 papers meeting the inclusion criteria and put forward for the final conceptual analysis. RESULTS: The defining attributes associated with end-of life conversations included (1) an ongoing process of older person empowerment, (2) discussion's concerning values and preferences concerning end-of-life issues, and (3) maintaining an open dialogue between all concerned individuals. Antecedents were associated with the older person is their readiness to talk openly about death and dying. Consequences were identified as having a better understanding of what death and dying may mean to the older person in a more specific manner. CONCLUSIONS: End-of-life conversations are vital in understanding an individual's values and preferences at the end of life, and yet, the concept of the end-of-life conversation has not been well defined in the literature. End-of-life conversations with the older person encompass ongoing discussions and maintaining open dialogue around end-of-life care while developing strategies to promote individual empowerment in making informed choices. Using a conceptual model, aides in addressing aspects of end-of-life conversations and an acknowledgment of the dynamic process of end-of-life conversations.

BACKGROUND: Health care providers need a better understanding of virtual care to recognise and use it for service delivery. AIM: To provide a more comprehensive definition of the concept of virtual care. METHOD: This study was conducted based on Walker and Avant's concept analysis method. A comprehensive review of the published texts in English from 2012 to 2022 was performed using the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest, Science Direct, Ovid, CINAHL and Google Scholar databases. RESULTS: The main aspects and attributes of virtual care, including the use of any information and communication technology in various formats such as platforms, telephone calls, messages, email consultation, remote monitoring, secure and two-way digital communication between health care providers and patients, the possibility of providing remote care synchronously or asynchronously, more interaction between patients and caregivers, the possibility of transferring information between patients and health care providers and within the teams themselves, symptom management, sending diagnostic results in the form of video visits, and providing follow-up care, are attributes that distinguish virtual care from telehealth, telemedicine and other methods of providing remote healthcare services. CONCLUSION: Considering the positive and negative consequences of implementing virtual care, the findings of this study developed a basis for an operational definition of the concept so that providers can understand the meaning of virtual care and consider it when providing virtual care to patients. The findings of this study can be used in many international and national contexts in the health care system and in future studies on interventions to increase the use of virtual care.

BACKGROUND: Wellness is a holistic, multidimensional, and process-oriented property on a continuum. It has been used interchangeably with and is undifferentiated from concepts such as health and well-being without an in-depth clarification of its theoretical foundations and a reflection on its meaning. The concept of wellness is frequently used, but its definition remains unclear. AIM: To conceptually and theoretically explore the concept of wellness to contribute to a deeper understanding in caring science. METHOD: Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis was applied to the theoretical investigation of data from publications of international origins. The focus was on antecedents, attributes, consequences, surrogate and related terms, and contextual references. A literature search was performed through a manual review of reference lists and an online search in CINAHL and PubMed via EBSCO, and in ProQuest. Abstracts were examined to identify relevant studies for further review. The inclusion criteria were peer-reviewed papers in English; papers published in scientific journals using the surrogate terms 'wellness', 'health', 'health care', and 'health care and wellness'; and papers discussing and/or defining the concept of wellness. Twenty-six studies met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Based on the findings from this concept analysis, a definition of wellness was developed: 'a holistic and multidimensional concept represented on a continuum of being well that goes beyond health'. Implications for nursing practice were correspondingly presented. CONCLUSION: Wellness is defined as a holistic and comprehensive multidimensional concept represented on a continuum of being well, that goes beyond health. It calls attention by applying the salutogenic perspective to health promotion in caring science. It is strongly related to individual lifestyle and health behaviour and is frequently used interchangeably with health and well-being without an in-depth clarification of its theoretical foundation.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are on the frontline for managing epidemic diseases. Different aspects of clinical nursing competencies during epidemics are important issues that need investigation. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the required clinical competencies for nurses during epidemics. Understanding these competencies could provide valuable information for health care services and nursing education organizations to prepare nurses for future epidemics. METHODS: The qualitative conventional content analysis study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with 12 nurses that were actively engaged in providing patient care during COVID-19 pandemic in Shahid Beheshti hospital in Kashan/Iran, from October 2022 to March 2023. The data analysis process was conducted according to 5 steps suggested by Graneheim and Lundman. RESULTS: After analysis, the 159 competencies were derived from interviews that were categorized to 11 subcategories, and three categories of clinical nursing skills in epidemics, knowledge of epidemics, and soft skills for nurses in epidemics. CONCLUSION: Nurses need wide range of competencies to address the professional expectations regarding providing acceptable care during epidemics. Knowing these competencies can help nursing managers to prepare nurses for crisis such as what world experienced during COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Academic resilience is a crucial concept for nursing students to cope with academic challenges. Currently, there is significant variation in the description of the concept attributes of academic resilience among nursing students, which impedes the advancement of academic research. Therefore, it is essential to establish a clear definition of the concept of academic resilience for nursing students. PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to report the results of concept analysis of academic resilience of nursing students. METHODS: The Rodgers evolutionary concept analysis was employed to test the attributes, antecedents, consequences and related concepts of academic resilience of nursing students. Walker and Avant's method was utilized to construct a model case and provide empirical referents. RESULTS: The findings indicate that the attributes of nursing students' academic resilience include self-efficacy, self-regulation and recovery, and the antecedents include internal factors and external environmental factors. The consequences include adaptability, career maturity, adversity quotient level, probability of academic success, a sense of belonging to school and low levels of psychological distress. CONCLUSION: The systematic understanding of academic resilience among nursing students provides a pathway for nursing educators and students to enhance academic resilience, promote academic success, and establish a foundation for the training of more qualified nurses.
