ABSTRACT

This current in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo research aims to evaluate and analyze the linalool-zinc oxide nanocomposite (Lin-ZNP) for treating cystic echinococcosis. Lin-ZNP was synthesized using an ethanolic solution of polyvinyl alcohol. The protoscolicidal effects of Lin-ZNP were tested on hydatid cyst protoscoleces (PTS) in both in vitro and ex vivo by eosin exclusion test. The study also examined the impact on caspase-3 gene expression and the external structure of PTS. The in vivo effect was measured by examining hydatid cysts' quantity, dimensions, and weight in mice intraperitoneally infected with 0.5 mL of PTS solution containing 1,000 PTS. The antioxidant and inflammatory cytokine gene expression levels were examined using real-time PCR. Lin-ZNP significantly (P < 0.001) killed the PTS in both in vitro and ex vivo in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The treated PTS exhibited creases and protrusions as a result of bleb formation and upregulation in the gene expression of caspase-3. Upon treatment with Lin-ZNP, there was a significant (P < 0.001) reduction in the number, diameter, and weight of the hydatid cysts. Treatment with Lin-ZNP nanocomposite led to a significant increase in the expression of antioxidant genes and a notable decrease in oxidative stress markers, and the expression levels of IL-4 and IL-10. Lin-ZNP has the potential to act as a scolicidal agent and demonstrates promise in controlling hydatid cysts in a mouse model, attributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, additional studies in clinical trials are needed to confirm the use of Lin-ZNP for treating hydatidosis.

ABSTRACT

Cellulose nanofibers, a sustainable and promising material with widespread applications, exhibit appreciable strength and excellent mechanical and physicochemical properties. The preparation of cellulosic nanofibers from food or agricultural residue is not sustainable. Therefore, this study was designed to use three halophytic plants (Cressa cretica, Phragmites karka, and Suaeda fruticosa) to extract cellulose for the subsequent conversion to cellulosic nanofibers composites. The other extracted biomass components including lignin, hemicellulose, and pectin were also utilized to obtain industrially valuable enzymes. The maximum pectinase (31.56 IU mL-1), xylanase (35.21 IU mL-1), and laccase (15.89 IU mL-1) were produced after the fermentation of extracted pectin, hemicellulose, and lignin from S. fruticosa, P. karka, and C. cretica, respectively. Cellulose was methylated (with a degree of substitution of 2.4) and subsequently converted into a composite using polyvinyl alcohol. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the successful synthesis of the composites. The composites made up of cellulose from C. cretica and S. fruticosa had a high tensile strength (21.5 and 15.2 MPa) and low biodegradability (47.58% and 44.56%, respectively) after dumping for 3 months in soil, as compared with the composite from P. karka (98.79% biodegradability and 4.9 MPa tensile strength). Moreover, all the composites exhibited antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) and gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus). Hence, this study emphasizes the possibility for various industrial applications of biomass from halophytic plants.

ABSTRACT

Global production of sugarcane bagasse (SB) by sugar industries exceeds more than 100 tons per annum. SB is rich in lignin and polysaccharide and hence can serve as a low-cost energy and carbon source for the growth of industrially important microorganism. However, various other applications of SB have also been investigated. In this study, SB was used as an adsorbent to remove an azo dye, malachite green. Subsequently, the dye-adsorbed SB was fermented by Trametes pubescens MB 89 for the production of laccase enzyme. The fungal pretreated SB was further utilized as a substrate for the simultaneous production of multiple plant cell wall degrading enzymes including, cellulase, xylanase, pectinase, and amylase by thermophilic bacterial strains. Results showed that 0.1% SB removed 97.04% malachite green at 30°C after 30 min from a solution containing 66 ppm of the dye. Fermentation of the dye-adsorbed SB by T. pubescens MB 89 yielded 667.203 IU mL-1 laccase. Moreover, Brevibacillus borstelensis UE10 produced 38.41 and 18.6 IU mL-1 ß-glucosidase and pectinase, respectively, by using fungal-pretreated SB. Cultivation of B. borstelensis UE27 in the medium containing the same substrate yielded 32.14 IU mL-1 of endoglucanase and 27.23 IU mL-1 of ß-glucosidase. Likewise, Neobacillus sedimentimangrovi UE25 could produce a mix of ß-glucosidase (37.24 IU mL-1 ), xylanase (18.65 IU mL-1 ) and endoglucanase (26.65 IU mL-1 ). Hence, this study led to the development of a method through which dye-containing textile effluent can be treated by SB along with the production of industrially important enzymes.

ABSTRACT

The present in vitro and in vivo study aimed to fabricate and characterize linalool-zinc oxide nanoparticles (Lin-ZNP) and evaluate their effectiveness against Toxoplasma gondii infection in terms of inflammation, oxidative stress, and pathogenicity. Lin-ZNP was synthesized using an ethanolic solution of polyvinyl alcohol. The anti-Toxoplasma and cytotoxicity activities of Lin-ZNP were investigated, along with its effects on nitric oxide (NO) production, caspase-3 activity, and pro-inflammatory genes. After treating T. gondii-infected mice with Lin-ZNP for 14 days, the number and size of tissue cysts, antioxidant potential, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and T. gondii pathogenicity-related genes were evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis. The Lin-ZNP composite showed a reduced tendency with an average size of 105 nm. Lin-ZNP significantly reduced the viability of tachyzoites. The obtained selectivity index higher than 10, indicating high specificity for parasites with low cytotoxicity to normal cells. The Lin-ZNP significantly (p < 0.05) increased the production of NO, caspase-3 activity, and the expression levels of pro-inflammatory genes. Lin-ZNP significantly (p < 0.001) decreased the size and number of tissue cysts and caused a significant reduction in the level of malondialdehyde and a considerable increase (p < 0.001) in antioxidant enzymes and their expression genes. Lin-ZNP significantly downregulated both mRNA and protein expression of the inflammation-related markers associated with the TLRs/NF-κB pathway. The expression levels of the T. gondii pathogenicity-related genes were significantly downregulated (p < 0.05). The recent survey indicated that Lin-ZNP manages T. gondii infection by its antioxidant activity and inhibiting the TLRs/NF-κB pathway without toxicity in mice.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To establish antibiogram data for patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) that would help differentiate the organisms commonly present depending on the voiding method and antibiotic sensitivity for empirical treatment. METHODS: A total of 499 urine culture results were obtained from 151 SCI patients with symptomatic urinary tract infection (UTI) with significant bacteriuria and pyuria with more than 10 white blood cells per high power field. The voiding method was categorized as follows: self-intermittent catheterization (SIC), suprapubic catheter (SPC), Foley catheter, condom catheter, or voiding freely. RESULTS: The demographic data were as follows: male, n=124 (82.2%); female, n=27 (17.8%); mean age, 39; paraplegic n=105 (69.5%); and tetraplegic, n=45 (29.8%). The SIC was the most common voiding method (n=64, 42.3%), followed by Foley catheter (n=39, 25.8%). Escherichia coli was the most common organism overall (29%) and more frequent in patients using SIC as the voiding method. Proteus mirabilis was present more frequently in patients using SPC (33%), and Klebsiella pneumoniae in voiding freely cultures (30%). Antibiotic sensitivity was as follows Gentamicin (44.1%), Nitrofurantoin (39.1%), Augmentin (33.5%), and Ciprofloxacin (31.5%). CONCLUSION: Increased preference of the local population to foley catheter as a voiding method which needs to be investigated more. The type of voiding methods in patients with SCI results in different common causative organisms of UTI. Ciprofloxacin resistance profile increased overall except in patients voiding with SPC. Nitrofurantoin is the most overall sensitive oral antibiotic in our sample followed by Augmentin then Cefuroxime.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) may exacerbate pulmonary complications in youth and young adults with asthma. We sought to identify the cognitive mechanisms that might explain e-cigarette use in this population. We hypothesized that e-cigarette outcome expectancies and e-cigarette resistance self-efficacy would mediate the relationship between asthma diagnosis and e-cigarette use in youth and young adults. METHODS: We enrolled youth and young adults (15-25 years old) in Alabama with a clinical diagnosis of asthma (n = 130) or without a diagnosis of any chronic pulmonary disease (n = 115; reference group). Author-constructed and validated questionnaires (young adult e-cigarette use outcome expectancies and modified Self-efficacy Scale for Adolescent Smoking) were administered to collect demographic data and assess susceptibility to e-cigarette use as well as current use of e-cigarettes, e-cigarette outcome expectancies, and e-cigarette resistance self-efficacy. We then conducted structural equation modeling to test whether e-cigarette expectancies and e-cigarette resistance self-efficacy mediate the relationship between asthma and susceptibility to e-cigarette use as well as current e-cigarette use. RESULTS: The frequency of the susceptibility to e-cigarette use and current e-cigarette use was lower among those with clinically diagnosed asthma than among those without asthma (35.8% vs. 59.8% for susceptibility and 6.0% vs. 18.2% for current use). Individuals with asthma reported weaker expectancies that e-cigarettes would make them feel relaxed which, in turn, was a significant predictor of lower susceptibility to e-cigarette use and current e-cigarette use, suggesting mediation. Finally, individuals with asthma demonstrated greater e-cigarette resistance self-efficacy in the context of social opportunities and friends' influence to use e-cigarettes. This self-efficacy was associated with lower susceptibility to e-cigarette use as well as current e-cigarette use. CONCLUSION: Although longitudinal studies are needed to determine relationships prospectively, targeted interventions that reduce outcome expectancies and increase resistance self-efficacy to e-cigarette use may further reduce e-cigarette use among youth and young adults with asthma.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Adults with asthma have a higher prevalence of substance use. However, knowledge is scarce regarding the associations between adults with asthma and tobacco use, substance use, and substance misuse. This study aimed to use national samples of United States adults to assess the comprehensive use and misuse of substances in adults with asthma.Method: This cross-sectional study comprised data drawn from the 2015 to 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Weighted logistic regressions were used to measure the associations of asthma status (lifetime and current) with last month's tobacco use; substance use (alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, crack, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants); and substance misuse (pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, sedatives). All regression models were controlled for sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidity, last-month serious psychological distress, and co-substance use and misuse. Results: Adults with lifetime asthma (Nweighted = 115,600,887) were less likely to use cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, inhalants, and polyuse of any substance. In contrast, adults with current asthma (Nweighted = 765,096,31) were more likely to use pipe tobacco, cocaine, non-prescribed tranquilizers, and less likely to use polytobacco products. Adults with lifetime asthma were associated with fewer last-month tobacco and inhalant use than those without lifetime asthma. However, adults with current asthma were associated with greater last month's pipe tobacco, cocaine, and non-prescribed tranquilizers. Conclusion: Thus, further longitudinal studies are recommended among adults with asthma to effectively design tailored treatment and prevention interventions.

ABSTRACT

Mechanically-robust nanocomposite membranes have been developed via crosslinking chemistry and electrospinning technique based on the rational selection of dispersed phase materials with high Young's modulus (i.e., graphene and multiwalled carbon nanotubes) and Cassie-Baxter design and used for oil and water separation. Proper selection of dispersed phase materials can enhance the stiffness of nanocomposite fiber membranes while their length has to be larger than their critical length. Chemical modification of the dispersed phase materials with fluorochemcials and their induced roughness were critical to achieve superhydrophobocity. Surface analytic tools including goniometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were applied to characterize the superhydrophobic nanocomposite membranes. An AFM-based nanoindentation technique was used to measure quantitativly the stiffness of the nanocomposite membranes for local region and whole composites, compared with the results by a tensile test technique. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques were used to confirm composition and formation of nanocomposite membranes. These membranes demonstrated excellent oil/water separation. This work has potential application in the field of water purification and remediation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to identify and review the research literature on dissuasive cigarettes, including key concepts, types, sources of evidence and research gaps. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched up to January 2023 with no language or date restrictions. All study designs were included. Reference lists of the identified studies were manually searched. Studies on tobacco products other than cigarettes or on external cigarette packaging alone were excluded. STUDY SELECTION: Two reviewers screened titles and abstracts independently using eligibility criteria. The full text of the selected articles was subsequently screened independently by two reviewers to confirm eligibility. DATA EXTRACTION: Two reviewers independently extracted data from all studies using data abstraction forms. Results were reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews checklist. DATA SYNTHESIS: We identified 24 original studies, 3 review articles and 4 commentary articles. Research on dissuasive cigarettes was reported from Australia, New Zealand, Europe and North America. We presented results in four themes: the concept of dissuasive cigarettes; approaches and types; potential benefits, barriers and concerns; and current research gaps. CONCLUSIONS: Dissuasive cigarettes represent a promising strategy that could be used in tobacco control. Parallel implementation with plain packaging would be feasible and synergistic.

BACKGROUND: With the advances in neonatal intensive care, the survival rate of extremely preterm infants is increasing. However, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) remains a major cause of morbidity among infants in this group. This study examined the changes in respiratory support modalities, specifically heated humidified high-flow nasal cannula (HHHFNC), and their association with BPD incidence among preterm infants born at < 29 weeks of gestation. METHOD: This population-based retrospective cohort study included infants born at < 29 weeks of gestation between 2016 and 2020. Data regarding the use and duration of respiratory support modalities were obtained, including mechanical ventilation, continuous positive airway pressure, HHHFNC, and low-flow oxygen therapy. Additionally, the incidence of BPD was determined in the included infants. Trend analysis for each respiratory support modality and BPD incidence rate was performed to define the temporal changes associated with changes in BPD rates. In addition, a logistic regression model was developed to identify the association between BPD and severity grade using HHHFNC. RESULTS: Three Hundred and sixteen infants were included in this study. The use and duration of HHHFNC therapy increased during the study period. Throughout the study period, the overall incidence of BPD was 49%, with no significant trends. The BPD rate was significantly higher in the infants who received HHHFNC than in those who did not (52% vs. 39%, P = 0.03). Analysis of BPD severity grades showed that both grade 1 BPD (34% vs. 21%, P = 0.03) and grade 2 BPD (12% vs. 1%, P < 0.01) were significantly more common among infants who received HHHFNC than among those who did not. In contrast, the incidence of grade 3 BPD was lower in infants who received HHFNC (6% vs. 17%, P < 0.01). The duration in days of HHHFNC was found to significantly predict BPD incidence (OR 1.04 [95%CI: 1.01-1.06], P < 0.01) after adjusting for confounding variables. CONCLUSION: The use of HHHFNC in extremely preterm infants born at < 29 weeks of gestation is increasing. There was a significant association between the duration of HHHFNC therapy and the development of BPD in extremely preterm infants born at < 29 weeks of gestation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common form of liver cancer that occurs in hepatocytes. Although many chemical drugs, e.g., cisplatin, methotrexate, taxis, and doxorubicin are used to treat HCC, there have been numerous reports related to the side effects of these drugs (e.g., emerging drug resistance, bone marrow failure, and gastrointestinal disorders). These issues led scientists to search for the novel anti-cancer drugs, mainly in natural products with greater efficiency and less toxicity. The current survey was intended to assess the anti-cancer effects of queen bee acid (10-Hydroxy-2-Decenoic Acid, 10-HDA) and its cellular mechanisms against the human hepatoma cell line HepG2. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay was used to evaluate the effect of 10-HDA on the viability of HepG2 cells. The initial and late apoptosis in the HepG2 cells treated with 10-HDA were assessed by the Annexin-V (AV) assay. The level of the gene and protein expression of some apoptosis genes (e.g., caspase-3, Bcl-2-associated X protein (BAX), and B-cell lymphoma protein 2 (Bcl-2)), Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARP), and miRNA-34a (miR-34a), were measured by real-time PCR and Western blot. RESULTS: The obtained findings revealed that HepG2 cell viability was markedly reduced (p < 0.01) following exposure to 10-HDA in a dose-dependent matter. The calculated half maximal cytotoxic concentration (CC50) value of 10-HDA was 59.6 µg/mL for HepG2 cells, while this value for normal THLE-3 cells was 106.4 µg/mL. We found that 10-HDA markedly elevated (p < 0.01) the percentage of necrotic and apoptotic cells from 0.94 to 9.7 and 27.6%, respectively. The real-time PCR results showed that the expression levels of the caspase-3, Bax, and miR-34a genes were significantly (p < 0.001) elevated. Contrary to these results, a significant (p < 0.01) reduction in the expression level of the Bcl2 gene was observed. The levels of protein expression of Caspase-3, PARP, and Bax were markedly elevated following exposure of HepG2 cells to 10-HDA at » CC50, ½ CC50, and CC50. The level of protein expression of Bcl-2 was markedly reduced following exposure of HepG2 cells to 10-HDA at » CC50, ½ CC50, and CC50 (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The current results confirmed the potent in vitro cytotoxic effects of 10-HDA on HepG2 cells with no significant cytotoxic effects on normal cells. Although its mechanisms of action have not been fully studied, the induction of apoptosis via different pathways was determined as one of the principle mechanisms of action of 10-HDA against HepG2 cells. Nevertheless, additional surveys must be performed to clearly understand the mechanisms of action and safety of this fatty acid.

Because of evident role of renin-angiotensin system in the etiology of rheumatoid arthritis, the current study's objective was to assess the anti-arthritic efficacy of ramipril through CFA-instigated arthritic model. The drug has been shown to have anti-inflammatory potential. CFA-instigated arthritic model assessed the anti-arthritic efficacy of ramipril by estimating different parameters, including paw volume, arthritic index scoring, haematological and biochemical attributes, histological and radiographic analyses, and various cytokines level. Ramipril significantly (p < 0.001) reduced paw volume and the arthritic index especially at the dose of 4mg/kg. The biochemical and haematological changes were likewise restored to normal by ramipril administration with an increase in anti-inflammatory cytokines while reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines level. Ramipril's ability to prevent arthritis by preserving the normal architecture of arthritis-induced joints is further supported by radiographic and histological investigation. The study's findings demonstrated ramipril's considerable anti-arthritic activity. To identify the precise mechanism of action, however, thorough mechanistic studies are still needed.

ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: Early detection of sepsis is crucial and can save lives. However, identifying sepsis early and accurately remains a difficult task in the medical field. This study aims to investigate a new machine-learning approach. By analyzing the clinical laboratory results and vital signs of adult patients in the ICU, this approach can predict and detect the initial signs of sepsis. Materials and Methods: To examine survival rates and predict outcomes, the study utilized several models, including the proportional hazards model and data mining algorithms. We analyzed data from the BESTCare database at KAMC, with a focus on patients aged 14 and older who were admitted to the ICU between April and October 2018. We conducted a thorough analysis of the medical records of a total of 1182 patients who were diagnosed with sepsis. Results: We studied two approaches to predict sepsis in ICU patients. The regression model utilizing survival analysis showed moderate predictive ability, emphasizing the importance of only three factors-time (from sepsis to an outcome; discharge or death), lactic acid, and temperature-had a significant p-value (p = 0.000568, p = 0.01, p = 0.02, respectively). Other data mining algorithms may have limitations due to their assumptions of variable independence and linear classification nature. Conclusions: To achieve progress and accuracy in the field of sepsis prediction, it is important to continuously strive for improvement. By meticulously cleaning and selecting data attributes, we can create a strong foundation for future advancements in this area.

ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: The study of clinical pharmacokinetics of inhaled antivirals is particularly important as it helps one to understand the therapeutic efficacy of these drugs and how best to use them in the treatment of respiratory viral infections such as influenza and the current COVID-19 pandemic. The article presents a systematic review of the available pharmacokinetic data of inhaled antivirals in humans, which could be beneficial for clinicians in adjusting doses for diseased populations. Materials and Methods: This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using multiple databases, and studies were screened by two independent reviewers to assess their eligibility. Data were extracted from the eligible studies and assessed for quality using appropriate tools. Results: This systematic review evaluated the pharmacokinetic parameters of inhaled antiviral drugs. The review analyzed 17 studies, which included Zanamivir, Laninamivir, and Ribavirin with 901 participants, and found that the non-compartmental approach was used in most studies for the pharmacokinetic analysis. The outcomes of most studies were to assess clinical pharmacokinetic parameters such as the Cmax, AUC, and t1/2 of inhaled antivirals. Conclusions: Overall, the studies found that the inhaled antiviral drugs were well tolerated and exhibited favorable pharmacokinetic profiles. The review provides valuable information on the use of these drugs for the treatment of influenza and other viral respiratory infections.

ABSTRACT

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) since it was introduced into dentistry, has become an important and valuable tool in many fields. It was applied in different specialties with different uses, for example, in diagnosis of oral cancer, periodontal disease and dental caries, and in the treatment planning and predicting the outcome of orthognathic surgeries. The aim of this comprehensive review is to report on the application and performance of AI models designed for application in the field of endodontics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched to collect the most relevant articles using terms, such as AI, endodontics, and dentistry. This review included 56 papers related to AI and its application in endodontics. RESULT: The applications of AI were in detecting and diagnosing periapical lesions, assessing root fractures, working length determination, prediction for postoperative pain, studying root canal anatomy and decision-making in endodontics for retreatment. The accuracy of AI in performing these tasks can reach up to 90%. CONCLUSION: Artificial intelligence has valuable applications in the field of modern endodontics with promising results. Larger and multicenter data sets can give external validity to the AI models. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: In the field of dentistry, AI models are specifically crafted to contribute to the diagnosis of oral diseases, ranging from common issues such as dental caries to more complex conditions like periodontal diseases and oral cancer. AI models can help in diagnosis, treatment planning, and in patient management in endodontics. ABSTRACT

As the availability of tobacco forms has evolved, emerging products known as heated tobacco products (HTPs) are increasingly being consumed worldwide and are claimed to be less harmful than tobacco cigarette smoking. To date, it is unknown whether Arab cigarette smokers are using or susceptible to HTPs. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the association between cigarette smoking behavior and the use of and susceptibility to HTPs in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Arab cigarette smokers (n = 628) from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, and Yemen were recruited using a convenience sampling technique. A cross-sectional survey comprised questions related to sociodemographic characteristics, cigarette smoking behavior characteristics (quitting attempts and desire to quit cigarette smoking, nicotine dependence, and consideration of switching to nicotine products with reduced health risks), and awareness of, use of, and susceptibility to use of HTPs. Descriptive and logistic regression models were used for analysis. The participants indicated a high frequency of past quitting attempts and a desire to quit smoking cigarettes. They were also considering switching to a nicotine product with reduced health risks. However, their awareness of HTPs was relatively low (24.2%), and the proportion of participants who had ever used HTPs or were currently using them was quite low as well (10.7% and 5.0%, respectively). A history of quit attempts was associated with more likely lifetime use of HTPs (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.63, 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.21-5.71]). Nicotine-dependent cigarette smokers were more likely to be susceptible to HTP use (AOR = 1.12, 95% CI [1.01-1.24]). Moreover, those who would consider switching to a product that provided nicotine and could reduce health risks by 99% were more likely to be susceptible to using HTPs (AOR = 2.17, 95% CI [1.05-4.51]). Awareness of HTPs is relatively low among Arab cigarette smokers. Attempts to quit cigarette smoking, nicotine dependence, and the consideration of switching to a product that delivers nicotine with reduced health risks were significantly associated with using HTPs. The findings of this study provide potential for evidence-based treatment for smokers and will help prevent the use of tobacco industry tactics in marketing HTPs.

ABSTRACT

Background: Globally, adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are the foremost cause of morbidity as well as mortality. This necessitates a system of surveillance that can effectively and efficiently monitor the effect of drugs on the general population. The role of pharmacovigilance (PV) is paramount in ensuring drug safety through spontaneous ADR reporting. Methods: Data collection in the current research was carried out by an anonymous, online 36-item self-report questionnaire amongst a sample of 351 working healthcare professionals (HCPs) across different regions of Jazan Province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The current sample comprised 54.4% males and 45.6% females, having an age range of 26-57 years, and was conducted between August 21 and October 21, 2022. Participants were recruited using the convenience snowball sampling technique. Results: The participants' awareness of PV as well as spontaneous ADR reporting, had a significant association with having <40 years of age (χ2 = 27.40; p < 0.001), being pharmacists (χ2 = 212.20; p < 0.001), with more than five years of experience (χ2 = 40.80; p < 0.001), having Masters (or) Doctorate/Fellowship (χ2 = 171.94; p < 0.001), and having their practice located in an urban area (χ2 = 50.30; p < 0.001). It was also observed that most participants with excellent awareness of PV and spontaneous ADR reporting also demonstrated excellent attitudes (χ2 = 147.70; p < 0.001). Similarly, it was also seen that almost all (97%) of the study sample with excellent attitudes towards PV and spontaneous ADR reporting also demonstrated excellent practices (χ2 = 250.73; p < 0.001). Conclusion: Our results demonstrate a need for designing and conducting educational programs, providing training and conducting workshops for all the HCPs to improve their awareness towards PV and spontaneous ADR reporting while also highlighting the need and importance of having positive attitudes towards spontaneous ADR reporting. Cooperation between different HCPs should be encouraged to improve their practices towards spontaneous ADR reporting.

INTRODUCTION: Youth and young adults with asthma use electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) at a higher rate than those without asthma. However, the factors that influence e-cigarette use in this vulnerable population are scarce. Therefore, the study aim was to assess the effects of anxiety, depression, impulsivity, and substance use in the relationship between e-cigarette use and youth and young adults with asthma status. METHOD: We enrolled youth and young adults (15-25 years old) in Alabama with a clinical diagnosis of asthma (n = 151) or without a diagnosis of any chronic pulmonary disease (n = 132; reference group). Validated questionnaires were administered to collect demographic data and assess susceptibility to e-cigarette use, current use of e-cigarettes, anxiety, depression, impulsivity, and substance use (alcohol and cannabis). We then conducted parallel mediation analyses to test the mediational effects of anxiety, depression, and impulsivity, and moderation analyses to assess the moderation effects of substance use in the relationship between asthma and e-cigarette use. RESULTS: Susceptibility to e-cigarette use and current use of e-cigarettes were both lower among youth and young adults with asthma. After controlling for covariates, anxiety, depression, and impulsivity were not significant mediators of the relationships between asthma and susceptibility to e-cigarette use and current use of e-cigarettes. However, the frequency of cannabis use in the past 30 days moderated the relationship between asthma and susceptibility to e-cigarette use (Unstandardized beta = - 2.03, p = 0.046), such that more frequent cannabis use was associated with less susceptibility. CONCLUSION: Among youth and young adults with asthma, cannabis use was associated with reduced susceptibility to e-cigarette use. Longitudinal assessments of this population are needed to better assess the temporal relationship between asthma, comorbid substance use, and e-cigarette use among young people with asthma to avoid pulmonary complications.

Infestation by Sarcoptes scabiei var. cuniculi mite causes scabies in humans and mange in animals. Alternative methods for developing environmentally friendly and effective plant-based acaricides are now a priority. The purpose of this research was the in silico design and in vitro evaluation of the efficacy of ethanol extracts of Acacia nilotica and Psidium guajava plant leaves against S. scabiei. Chem-Draw ultra-software (v. 12.0.2.1076.2010) was used to draw 36 distinct compounds from these plants that were employed as ligands in docking tests against S. scabiei Aspartic protease (SsAP). With docking scores of - 6.50993 and - 6.16359, respectively, clionasterol (PubChem CID 457801) and mangiferin (PubChem CID 5281647) from A. nilotica inhibited the targeted protein SsAP, while only beta-sitosterol (PubChem CID 222284) from P. guajava interacted with the SsAP active site with a docking score of - 6.20532. Mortality in contact bioassay at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 g/ml was determined to calculate median lethal time (LT50) and median lethal concentration (LC50) values. Acacia nilotica extract had an LC50 value of 0.218 g/ml compared to P. guajava extract, which had an LC50 value of 0.829 g/ml at 6 h. These results suggest that A. nilotica extract is more effective in killing mites, and these plants may have novel acaricidal properties against S. scabiei. Further research should focus on A. nilotica as a potential substitute for clinically available acaricides against resistant mites.

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes a barrier function adaptive non-singular terminal sliding mode controller for a six-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) quad-rotor in the existence of matched disturbances. For this reason, a linear sliding surface according to the tracking error dynamics is proposed for the convergence of tracking errors to origin. Afterward, a novel non-singular terminal sliding surface is suggested to guarantee the finite-time reachability of the linear sliding surface to origin. Moreover, for the rejection of the matched disturbances that enter into the quad-rotor system, an adaptive control law based on barrier function is recommended to approximate the matched disturbances at any moment. The barrier function-based control technique has two valuable properties. First, this function forces the error dynamics to converge on a region near the origin in a finite time. Secondly, it can remove the increase in the adaptive gain because of the matched disturbances. Lastly, simulation results are given to demonstrate the validation of this technique.
