ABSTRACT

The mechanism of charge photogeneration in neat conjugated polymers has long been controversial and a unified explanation has not been achieved so far. In this paper, we use a surface hopping method to simulate the excited-state dynamics of a system composed of five π-stacked polymer chains. In this system, polaron pairs (PPs) with large electron-hole distance can be seen as free charges. The surface hopping method is based on the Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) Hamiltonian and the excited states of the system are calculated with configuration interaction singles (CIS) formalism. During the simulations, the yields of PPs and free charges are calculated using a statistical method. By comparison, it is found that impurity and excess energy have significant effects on the yields of PPs and free charges. Free charges are difficult to be generated in neat systems with small excess energy. Free charges come from direct dissociation of high-energy excitons.

ABSTRACT

The time-dependent quantum transportation through a metal/polymer/metal system is theoretically investigated on the basis of a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model combined with the hierarchical equations of motion formalism. Using a non-adiabatic dynamical method, the evolution of the electron subspace and lattice atoms with time can be obtained. It is found that the calculated transient currents vary with time and reach stable values after a response time under the bias voltages. However, the stable current as the system reaches its dynamical steady state exhibits a discrepancy between two sweep directions of the bias voltage, which results in pronounced electrical hysteresis loops in the current-voltage curve. By analyzing the evolution of instantaneous energy eigenstates, the occupation number of the instantaneous eigenstates, and the lattice of the polymer, we show that the formation of excitons and the delay of their annihilation are responsible for the hysteretic current-voltage characteristics, where electron-phonon interactions play the key factor. Furthermore, the hysteresis width and amplitude can also be modulated by the strength of the electron-phonon coupling, level-width broadening function, and temperature. We hope these results about past condition-dependent switching performance at a sweep voltage can provide further insight into some of the basic issues of interest in hysteresis processes in conducting polymers.

ABSTRACT

Cigar tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is widely planted in Yunnan, which is becoming an important economic crop in China. In March 2023, root rot of cigar tobacco (cv. Yunxue 38) was observed in Baoshan (98°51'E, 24°58'N), and in July 2022 root rot of tobacco (cv. Yunyan 87) was observed in Dali (99°54'E, 26°30'N), Yunnan Province, China. The average disease incidences surveyed in the fields reached 10%. At the early stage, the bottom leaves showed wilting and turned yellow, and the roots became brown. Following the disease development, the color of roots turned to dark brown and ultimately necrosis. To isolate the causal agent, small pieces (5×5 mm) of diseased root from 6 symptomatic plant samples (three samples of cv. Yunxue 38 and three samples of cv. Yunyan 87) were cut. Pieces were surface-sterilized by dipping in 75% ethanol for 30 s, rinsed three times with sterile distilled water, then transferred to potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium and incubated at 28°C in the dark. Six fungal isolates cultured for 14 days were obtained. They were morphologically similar, so a representative isolate was selected for the following experiment. The colonies grew slowly on PDA, and their color were light pink initially, then changed to amaranth. Hyphae were hyaline and septate. Microconidia were hardly produced on PDA plates. After 14 days of culture on V8 juice agar, the colonies showed white aerial mycelia, and ellipsoidal and transparent conidia were observed, which measured 6.5 to 8.3 × 3.4 to 5.0 µm (n=20). Also, the pycnidia were measured 150 to 220 µm, that were subglobose in dark brown with brown setae. These morphological characteristics of 22DL91 were identical to S. terrestris (Boerema et al. 2004). For molecular identification, DNA was extracted and the PCR products of ITS region and polymerase II second largest subunit (RPB2), amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 and RPB2-5F/RPB2-7cR, were sequenced. By BLASTn analysis, the obtained ITS sequences showed 100% homology and the RPB2 sequences showed 95% homology with S. terrestris strains in GenBank (accession ON006851 and OM417590). The sequences were deposited in NCBI with accession numbers OR539491 (ITS) and OR554276 (RPB2), respectively. Based on the morphology and phylogenetic analysis, the isolate was 22DL91 identified as S. terrestris. Pathogenicity was evaluated on 50-day-old cigar tobacco seedlings (cv. Yunxue 38) and tobacco seedlings (cv. Yunyan 87). Ten plants were inoculated with 20 mL of conidial suspension of 105 conidia/mL poured onto the roots and ten control seedlings dipped in sterile water as controls (Luo et al. 2023). After 14 days, all inoculated seedlings showed the symptoms with leaves yellowing and root rot, whereas the control seedlings had no symptoms. Moreover, the fungus S. terrestris was reisolated from the infected roots, fulfilling Koch's postulates. This fungus was previously known to cause pink root on garlic in China (Zhang et al. 2019). To our knowledge, this is the first report of S. terrestris causing root rot of Nicotiana tabacum in China. Therefore, this finding will provide valuable information for prevention and management of root rot on tobacco.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: We carried out the study aiming to explore and analyze the risk factors, the distribution of pathogenic bacteria, and their antibiotic-resistance characteristics influencing the occurrence of surgical site infection (SSI), to provide valuable assistance for reducing the incidence of SSI after traumatic fracture surgery. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study enrolling 3978 participants from January 2015 to December 2019 receiving surgical treatment for traumatic fractures was conducted at Tangdu Hospital of Air Force Medical University. Baseline data, demographic characteristics, lifestyles, variables related to surgical treatment, and pathogen culture were harvested and analyzed. Univariate analyses and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to reveal the independent risk factors of SSI. A bacterial distribution histogram and drug-sensitive heat map were drawn to describe the pathogenic characteristics. RESULTS: Included 3978 patients 138 of them developed SSI with an incidence rate of 3.47% postoperatively. By logistic regression analysis, we found that variables such as gender (males) (odds ratio (OR) = 2.012, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.235 - 3.278, p = 0.005), diabetes mellitus (OR = 5.848, 95% CI: 3.513 - 9.736, p < 0.001), hypoproteinemia (OR = 3.400, 95% CI: 1.280 - 9.031, p = 0.014), underlying disease (OR = 5.398, 95% CI: 2.343 - 12.438, p < 0.001), hormonotherapy (OR = 11.718, 95% CI: 6.269 - 21.903, p < 0.001), open fracture (OR = 29.377, 95% CI: 9.944 - 86.784, p < 0.001), and intraoperative transfusion (OR = 2.664, 95% CI: 1.572 - 4.515, p < 0.001) were independent risk factors for SSI, while, aged over 59 years (OR = 0.132, 95% CI: 0.059 - 0.296, p < 0.001), prophylactic antibiotics use (OR = 0.082, 95% CI: 0.042 - 0.164, p < 0.001) and vacuum sealing drainage use (OR = 0.036, 95% CI: 0.010 - 0.129, p < 0.001) were protective factors. Pathogens results showed that 301 strains of 38 species of bacteria were harvested, among which 178 (59.1%) strains were Gram-positive bacteria, and 123 (40.9%) strains were Gram-negative bacteria. Staphylococcus aureus (108, 60.7%) and Enterobacter cloacae (38, 30.9%) accounted for the largest proportion. The susceptibility of Gram-positive bacteria to Vancomycin and Linezolid was almost 100%. The susceptibility of Gram-negative bacteria to Imipenem, Amikacin, and Meropenem exceeded 73%. CONCLUSION: Orthopedic surgeons need to develop appropriate surgical plans based on the risk factors and protective factors associated with postoperative SSI to reduce its occurrence. Meanwhile, it is recommended to strengthen blood glucose control in the early stage of admission and for surgeons to be cautious and scientific when choosing antibiotic therapy in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

In polymer solar cells (PSCs), the contribution of hot excitons to charge generation is strongly limited by their relatively low yield and ultrafast internal conversion (IC) process. In recent years, different strategies have been proposed to modulate the hot exciton dynamics, but a direct correlation between the microscopic properties of the polymer and hot exciton dynamics is still not completely clear. Here, we theoretically investigate the effect of intramolecular disorder, including the diagonal disorder (DD) and off-diagonal disorder (ODD), on the hot exciton dynamics based on the tight-binding model calculations. We find that the effect of ODD on the hot exciton yield is more significant than that of DD. In addition, we find that the IC relaxation time of hot excitons depends nonmonotonically on the intensity of DD and ODD, indicating that the intramolecular disorder can modulate the competitive relationship between the spontaneous dissociation of hot excitons and the IC process. This work provides a guide for promoting charge generation in PSCs dominated by hot exciton dissociation.

ABSTRACT

Charge separation in organic solar cells is a long-lasting and heavily debated issue. Here, we use the surface hopping method based on the Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) Hamiltonian and configuration interaction singles (CIS) approximation to simulate the charge separation process in an organic donor-acceptor system. The system is composed of one donor polymer chain and four acceptor polymer chains, and they are all stacked face-to-face. We let the system to relax from a photoexcited state, and then we observed that the electron is transferred from the donor chain to different acceptor chains and the hole is left on the donor chain, forming polaron pairs with different electron-hole distances. By performing statistical analysis on a number of trajectories, we found that the electron and the hole are fully separated before the system relaxes to its lowest excited state. The yield of free charges shows a significant dependence on the donor-acceptor band offset which provides the driving force for charge separation, while showing negligible dependence on the photoexcitation energy. The external electric field has a remarkable effect on the yield of free charges.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopy (PTCS) has provided an alternative therapeutic option for handling refractory biliary complications in liver transplanted recipients. This study aimed to evaluate short-term PTCS efficiency in the management of biliary complications following liver transplantation. METHODS: Clinical data of 25 patients who received therapeutic PTCS due to biliary complications after liver transplantation were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Therapeutic PTCS was successfully performed in 25 patients. Biliary complications were anastomotic strictures in seven cases, intrahepatic cholangiolithiasis in four cases, extra-and intrahepatic cholangiolithiasis in three cases, choledocholithiasis complicated with anastomotic strictures in four cases, intrahepatic cholangiolithiasis complicated with non-anastomotic strictures in one case, intrahepatic cholangiolithiasis complicated with anastomotic strictures in five cases, intrahepatic cholangiolithiasis complicated with anastomotic strictures and ischemic cholangitis in one case. The median time between liver transplantation and first PTCS was 24 months, and median times of PTCS was 2.6. Clinical manifestations were significantly improved in most patients after PTCS, and biliary complications were successfully managed through PTCS in 15 cases, which were partially effective in eight cases and ineffective in two cases. PTCS was more effective in tackling anastomotic strictures and cholangiolithiasis. CONCLUSION: PTCS was an effective therapeutic modality for treating refractory biliary complications following liver transplantation.

ABSTRACT

Tobacco is one of the most significant non-food cash crops (Lu et al. 2020). In March 2022, cigar tobacco plants showing characteristic symptoms of vascular discoloration, stem rotting, leaf wilting and rotting were observed in Tengchong city (N 25°3'26″, E 98°25'6″) of Yunnan province, China (Fig. S1). The disease incidence was about 5% on cultivar Yunxue 6 in a 33-ha field. Infected stems were collected from Tengchong for pathogen isolation and 16S rDNA sequence analysis was performed as previously described (Lu et al. 2021). Sequence analysis showed that tobacco isolates (GenBank accession numbers: ON795108, ON795107 and ON795106) had an identical sequence with that of the species type strain of Pectobacterium versatile CFBP 6051T and shared the sequence identities of 99.55% and 99.47% with P. carotovorum DSM 30168T and P. parvum s0421T, respectively. Furthermore, phylogenetic analysis showed that tobacco strains were clustered with Pectobacterium versatile CFBP 6051T (Fig. S2a). In API assays, strain 22TC1 was positive for ß-galactosidase activity, reduction of nitrates to nitrites, fermentation of glucose, hydrolysis of esculin and gelatin, assimilation of D-glucose, L-arabinose, D-mannose, D-mannitol, N-acetylglucosamine, malic acid and trisodium citrate; positive for the enzymatic substrates of alkaline phosphatase, leucine arylamidase, acid phosphatase, naphthol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase, α-galactosidase, ß-galactosidase and α-glucosidase. Furthermore, the average nucleotide identity (ANI) analysis (Richter et al. 2015) showed that strain 22TC1 (GenBank accession number: JAMWYQ000000000) had the highest ANIb score of 96.76% and ANIm value of 97.19% with P. versatile CFBP 6051T. Similarly, in silico DNA-DNA hybridization (isDDH) value was 74.5% compared to P. versatile CFBP 6051T, isDDH values were 35.5-63.7% with the other Pectobacterium species, which below the 70% threshold value for species delineation (Meier-Kolthoff et al. 2021). The phylogenomic analysis also showed that strain 22TC1 was clustered with the species type strain of P. versatile CFBP 6051T. For pathogenicity tests, cell suspension with ten-fold dilution (approx. 1 x 108 CFU/ml) was injected into the leaf axils of two 2-month-old tobacco stems (cv. Yunyan 87). As a control, tobacco seedlings were inoculated with sterile distilled water. The plants were sealed in plastic bags and maintained in a growth chamber at 28°C for 2 d. The symptoms of water-soaked decay were observed within 24 h of inoculation. Whole-plant decay was at 2 days after injection. No symptoms were developed in the controls. Reisolation was performed on diseased stems and the identity of isolated bacteria was confirmed by PCR and sequencing of 16S rRNA. Similar results were obtained in two independent experiments. Based on the above-described data, the causal pathogen of stem rot on cigar tobacco in Tengchong was identified as P. versatile. To our knowledge, this is the first time that P. versatile is found to cause stem rot on tobacco. Pectobacterium species have been reported to cause seed-borne diseases on tobacco seedlings in the floating tray system and soil-borne diseases in tobacco fields (Wang et al. 2017; Xia and Mo 2007). Therefore, studying the possible transmission of the P. versatile to tobacco plants is necessary.

ABSTRACT

Sepsis, a hyperinflammatory response that can result in multiple organ dysfunctions, is a leading cause of mortality from infection. Here, we show that orphan nuclear receptor Nur77 (also known as TR3) can enhance resistance to lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced sepsis in mice by inhibiting NF-κB activity and suppressing aberrant cytokine production. Nur77 directly associates with p65 to block its binding to the κB element. However, this function of Nur77 is countered by the LPS-activated p38α phosphorylation of Nur77. Dampening the interaction between Nur77 and p38α would favor Nur77 suppression of the hyperinflammatory response. A compound, n-pentyl 2-[3,5-dihydroxy-2-(1-nonanoyl) phenyl]acetate, screened from a Nur77-biased library, blocked the Nur77-p38α interaction by targeting the ligand-binding domain of Nur77 and restored the suppression of the hyperinflammatory response through Nur77 inhibition of NF-κB. This study associates the nuclear receptor with immune homeostasis and implicates a new therapeutic strategy to treat hyperinflammatory responses by targeting a p38α substrate to modulate p38α-regulated functions.

ABSTRACT

Autophagy is linked to cell death, yet the associated mechanisms are largely undercharacterized. We discovered that melanoma, which is generally resistant to drug-induced apoptosis, can undergo autophagic cell death with the participation of orphan nuclear receptor TR3. A sequence of molecular events leading to cellular demise is launched by a specific chemical compound, 1-(3,4,5-trihydroxyphenyl)nonan-1-one, newly acquired from screening a library of TR3-targeting compounds. The autophagic cascade comprises TR3 translocation to mitochondria through interaction with the mitochondrial outer membrane protein Nix, crossing into the mitochondrial inner membrane through Tom40 and Tom70 channel proteins, dissipation of mitochondrial membrane potential by the permeability transition pore complex ANT1-VDAC1 and induction of autophagy. This process leads to excessive mitochondria clearance and irreversible cell death. It implicates a new approach to melanoma therapy through activation of a mitochondrial signaling pathway that integrates a nuclear receptor with autophagy for cell death.

ABSTRACT

Liver kinase B1 (LKB1) has important roles in governing energy homeostasis by regulating the activity of the energy sensor kinase AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). The regulation of LKB1 function, however, is still poorly understood. Here we demonstrate that the orphan nuclear receptor Nur77 binds and sequesters LKB1 in the nucleus, thereby attenuating AMPK activation. This Nur77 function is antagonized by the chemical compound ethyl 2-[2,3,4-trimethoxy-6-(1-octanoyl)phenyl]acetate (TMPA), which interacts with Nur77 with high affinity and at specific sites. TMPA binding of Nur77 results in the release and shuttling of LKB1 to the cytoplasm to phosphorylate AMPKα. Moreover, TMPA effectively reduces blood glucose and alleviates insulin resistance in type II db/db and high-fat diet- and streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice but not in diabetic littermates with the Nur77 gene knocked out. This study attains a mechanistic understanding of the regulation of LKB1-AMPK axis and implicates Nur77 as a new and amenable target for the design and development of therapeutics to treat metabolic diseases.

ABSTRACT

In polymer solar cells (PSCs), charge-transfer (CT) state absorption plays an important role in evaluating the CT-state energy and energy loss. However, due to the disordered nature of polymers, a comprehensive understanding of CT absorption properties remains elusive. Especially, the dominant role of dynamic and static disorder in determining CT absorption is frequently debated. Herein, we theoretically constructed an organic donor-acceptor model to investigate the impact of these two types of disorders on CT absorption properties. It is demonstrated that the CT absorption properties depend significantly on the type of disorder. Specifically, it is found that dynamic disorder has a more significant impact on the peak and position of CT absorption as well as the broadening properties, compared to static disorder. The study indicates that minimizing dynamic disorder can lead to a reduction in overall disorder, which is beneficial for improving the performance of PSCs.

ABSTRACT

The adjustment of crystal symmetry and intramolecular magnetic coupling is of great importance for the construction of high-performance single-molecule magnets. By using an aggregation-induced-emission-active pyridine-carbohydrazone-based Schiff base ligand and phosphine oxides, four dinuclear and one one-dimensional DyIII-based complexes, [Dy2(TPE-pc)2(Bu3PO)2Cl2]·2CH3CN·2H2O (1), [Dy2(TPE-pc)2(Cy3PO)2Cl2] (2), [Dy2(TPE-pc)2(MePA)2Cl2]·2CH3OH (3), [Dy2(TPE-pc)2(Ph3PO)2Cl2]2 (4) and [Dy2(TPE-pc)2(DPPO)Cl2]n (5) (H2TPE-pc = (E)-N'-(2-hydroxy-5-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)benzylidene)picolinohydrazide, MePA = N-phenyl-N',N''-bis(morpholinyl) phosphoric triamide, DPPO = piperazine-1,4-diylbis(diphenyl phosphine oxide)), were isolated. All complexes are made up of an enol oxygen-bridged Dy2 unit, where DyIII ions possess a pentagonal bipyramidal geometry with pseudo D5h symmetry. Magnetic measurements reveal that intramolecular DyIII-DyIII couplings are ferromagnetic and all complexes display a significant slow magnetic relaxation phenomenon below 30 K under a zero dc field. Ab initio calculations indicate that the anisotropic magnetic axes of all DyIII ions are approximately perpendicular to the higher-order symmetric axes in all complexes, and that DyIII-DyIII magnetic couplings along the magnetic axes effectively suppress the ground state quantum tunneling effect of magnetization and promote the occurrence of slow magnetic relaxation. Raman relaxation prevails in all complexes. In addition, the H2TPE-pc ligand shows an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect; however, all complexes exhibit an aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) phenomenon.

ABSTRACT

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in the development of various cancers. MiRNA-497 functions as a tumor-suppressor that is downregulated in several malignancies; however, its role in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has not been examined in detail. Here, we showed that miR-497 is downregulated in NSCLC tumors and cell lines and its ectopic expression significantly inhibits cell proliferation and colony formation. Integrated analysis identified HDGF as a downstream target of miR-497, and the downregulation of HDGF by miR-497 overexpression confirmed their association. Rescue experiments showed that the inhibitory effect of miR-497 on cell proliferation and colony formation is predominantly mediated by the modulation of HDGF levels. Furthermore, tumor samples from NSCLC patients showed an inverse relationship between miR-497 and HDGF levels, and ectopic expression of miR-497 significantly inhibited tumor growth and angiogenesis in a SCID mouse xenograft model. Our results suggest that miR-497 may serve as a biomarker in NSCLC, and the modulation of its activity may represent a novel therapeutic strategy for the treatment of NSCLC patients.

ABSTRACT

A novel conjugated asymmetric donor-acceptor (CADA) strategy for preventing the redshift in photoluminescence, as well as preserving the merits of donor-acceptor architectures, was proposed and demonstrated for two triazine derivatives, which showed highly efficient, narrow, and blueshifted ultraviolet light emission in solid films along with special aggregation-induced emission behavior. A mechanism of aggregation-induced locally excited-state emission by suppressing the twisted intramolecular charge-transfer emission for the spectacular optoelectronic phenomena of these CADA molecules was suggested on the basis of both experimental measurements and theoretical calculations. By taking advantage of this special CADA architecture, fluorescent probes based on aggregates of conjugated asymmetric triazines in THF/water for the detection of explosives show superamplified detection of picric acid with high quenching constants (>1.0 × 10(7) M(-1)) and a low detection limit of 15 ppb.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) plus embolotherapy in the treatment of patients with gastroesophageal varices. METHODS: A total of 36 patients with gastroesophageal varices underwent the therapies of TIPS plus embolotherapy from July 2005 to March 2011 at Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University. The rechecked items included abdominal ultrasound examination, liver function test and blood routine examination at Day 7 post-operation. All received endoscopic examinations at Month 1. RESULTS: The technical success rate of TIPS plus embolotherapy was 100%. The portal vein pressures declined from (28 ± 8) mm Hg (1 mm Hg = 0.133 kPa) to (14 ± 7) mm Hg at post-operation. Angiography showed gastroesophageal varices disappeared in all patients. Both liver function and gastroesophageal varices markedly improved. During the follow-up period of 3 - 6 months, 4 cases had hepatic encephalopathy and 1 case stent restenosis at post-operation. And most cases were resolved after treatment. No rebleeding occurred during the follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS: The combined modality of TIPS plus embolotherapy can effectively lower portal vein pressure and cure esophageal and gastric varice bleeding. As a safe and excellent interventional procedure with fewer complications and a lower recurrence rate of portal hypertension, it has great clinical values in the treatment of portal hypertension and gastroesophageal varices.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the influencing factors of the residual back pain in patient with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures(OVCFs) in the early and late stages after percutaneous vertebral augmentation(PVA), and analyze the correlation between these factors and the residual back pain after PVA. METHODS: From March 2018 to December 2019, 312 patients with OVCFs who treated with PVA were collected. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 240 patients were included in this retrospective study. There were 59 males and 181 females, aged from 50 to 95 years old with an average of (76.11±10.72) years old, and 50 cases of fractures located in the thoracic region (T5-T10), 159 cases in the thoracolumbar region (T11-L2), and 31 cases in the lumbar region (L3 and below). The first day after PVA was regarded as the early postoperative period, and the seventh day was regarded as the late postoperative period. According to the visual analogue scale (VAS), the patients were divided into 4 groups:early postoperative pain relief group(group A, VAS≤4 scores), there were 121 patients, including 29 males and 92 females, aged from 50 to 90 years with an average of (75.71±11.00) years;early postoperative pain relief was not an obvious group (group B, VAS >4 scores), there were 119 patients, including 30 males and 89 females, aged from 53 to 95 years with an average of (76.51±10.46) years; late postoperative pain relief group (group C, VAS≤ 4 scores), there were 172 patients, including 42 males and 130 females, aged from 50 to 95 years with an average of (76.20±10.68) years; late postoperative pain relief was not obvious group (group D, VAS>4 scores), there were 68 patients, including 17 males and 51 females, aged from 53 to 94 years old with an average of (75.88±10.91) years old. The age, gender, bone mineral density(BMD), injured vertebral segment, preoperative thoracolumbar fascial condition, surgical methods, single or bilateral puncture, the amount of bone cement injection, anterior vertebral height recovery rate and central vertebral height recovery rate in the 4 groups were analyzed by univariate analysis. The statistically significant factors were put into a Logistic regression to analyze the correlation between these factors and residual back pain after PVA. RESULTS: Univariate analysis showed that the residual back pain in the early stage after PVA was correlated with BMD, preoperative thoracolumbar fascial injury, single or bilateral puncture, the amount of bone cement injection, anterior vertebral height recovery rate and central vertebral height recovery rate(P<0.05). The residual back pain in the late postoperative period was related to BMD, injured vertebral segment, surgical methods, the amount of bone cement injection, anterior vertebral height recovery rate and central vertebral height recovery rate(P<0.05). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that thoracolumbar fascial injury(OR=4.938, P=0.001), single or bilateral puncture(OR=5.073, P=0.002) were positively correlated with the residual back pain in the early stage after PVA(B>0), which were risk factors;the BMD (OR=0.211, P=0.000) and anterior vertebral height recovery rate (OR=0.866, P=0.001) were negatively correlated with the residual back pain in the early stage after PVA(B<0), which were protective factors. In the late stage after PVA, the BMD(OR=0.448, P=0.003), the amount of bone cement injection (OR=0.648, P=0.004) and anterior vertebral height recovery rate (OR=0.820, P=0.000) were negatively correlated with residual back pain(B<0), which were protective factors. CONCLUSION: The decrease of BMD, injury of the thoracolumbar fascia, single or bilateral puncture, poor recovery of anterior vertebral height and insufficient injection of bone cement are closely related to the occurrence of residual back pain after PVA, which affect the relief of residual back pain in the early and late postoperative periods.

ABSTRACT

Conjugated asymmetric donor-substituted 1,3,5-triazines (ADTs) have been synthesized by nucleophilic substitution of organolithium catalyzed by [Pd(PPh(3))(4)]. Theoretical and experimental investigations show that ADTs possess high solubility and thermostability, high fluorescent quantum yield (35%), low HOMO (-6.0 eV) and LUMO (-2.8 eV), and high triplet energy (E(T), 3.0 eV) according to the different substitution pattern of triazine. The application as host materials for blue PHOLEDs yielded a maximum current efficiency of 20.9 cd A(-1), a maximum external quantum efficiency of 9.8%, and a brightness of 9671 cd m(-2) at 5.4 V, making ADTs good candidates for optoelectronic devices.

ABSTRACT

Scattering process between a negative polaron and an exciton in a polymer chain is investigated by using the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model modified to include electron-electron interactions, the Brazovskii-Kirova symmetry breaking term, and an external electric field. It is found that the scattering process is spin dependent. If the polaron and the exciton have parallel spins, the polaron can easily pass through the exciton as if it "do not see" the exciton. If the polaron and the exciton have antiparallel spins, there exist strong repulsion between them. The polaron may be bounced back, be dissociated or pass through the exciton depending on the strength of the external electric field. In any of these cases, the polaron cannot break the exciton.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the diagnostic value of Tei index of right ventricle and serum level of NT-proBNP in patients with high-altitude heart disease (HAHD). METHODS: Right ventricle Tei index and serum NT-proBN level were calculated and tested in 32 local healthy volunteers and 34 cases of HAHD patients hospitalized in our hospital in Golmud city (2808 meters above sea level) from 2008 to 2010, and a correlation study was conducted thereafter. RESULTS: The pulmonary arterial systolic pressure and right ventricle Tei index, elevated significantly in HAHD patients compared with the control group [(86.61 vs 9.72) mm Hg (1 mm Hg = 0.133 kPa) and (0.90 vs 0.33) respectively, P < 0.05]. Patients diagnosed as mild pulmonary hypertension without alteration in cardiac structure showed higher pulmonary arterial systolic pressure and the Tei index compared with the control group [(57.1 vs 9.72) mm Hg and (0.78 vs 0.33) respectively, P < 0.05]. In addition, the level of serum NT-proBNP was significantly higher in HAHD group than that of control group [(1246.8 ± 512.6) ng/L and (98.6 ± 21.7) ng/L respectively, P < 0.05]. CONCLUSION: Right ventricle Tei index and serum NT-proBNP level are sensitive indicators for right ventricular function and thus of favorable clinical significance for the diagnosis of HAHD.
