ABSTRACT

Background: The minor G-allele of FOXO3 rs2802292 is associated with human longevity. The aim of this study was to test the protective effect of the variant against the association with type 2 Diabetes and NAFLD. Methods: rs2802292 was genotyped in a large population of middle-aged subjects (n = 650) from a small city in Southern Italy. All participants were interviewed to collect information about lifestyle and dietary habits; clinical characteristics were recorded, and blood samples were collected from all subjects. The association between rs2802292 and NAFLD or diabetes was tested using a logistic model and mediation analysis adjusted for covariates. Results: Overall, the results indicated a statistical association between diabetes and rs2802292, especially for the TT genotype (OR = 2.14, 1.01 to 4.53 95% C.I., p = 0.05) or in any case for those who possess the G-allele (OR = 0.45, 0.25 to 0.81 95% C.I., p = 0.008). Furthermore, we found a mediation effect of rs2802292 on diabetes (as mediator) and NAFLD. There is no direct relationship between rs2802292 and NAFLD, but the effect is direct (ß = 0.10, -0.003 to 0.12 95% C.I., p = 0.04) on diabetes, but only in TT genotypes. Conclusions: The data on our cohort indicate that the longevity-associated FOXO3 variant may have protective effects against diabetes and NAFLD.

ABSTRACT

Crohn's disease (CD) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affecting the gastrointestinal tract that can also cause extra-intestinal complications. Following exposure to the mRNA vaccine BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) encoding the SARS-CoV-2 Spike (S) protein, some patients experienced a lack of response to the biological drug Adalimumab and a recrudescence of the disease. In CD patients in progression, resistant to considered biological therapy, an abnormal increase in intestinal permeability was observed, more often with a modulated expression of different proteins such as Aquaporin 8 (AQP8) and in tight junctions (e.g., ZO-1, Claudin1, Claudin2, Occludin), especially during disease flares. The aim of this study is to investigate how the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine could interfere with IBD therapy and contribute to disease exacerbation. We investigated the role of the SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein, transported by extracellular vesicles (EVs), and the impact of various EVs components, namely, exosomes (EXOs) and microvesicles (MVs), in modulating the expression of molecules involved in the exacerbation of CD, which remains unknown.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Body composition predicts mortality in patients with cirrhosis. The impact of sex on this association is unknown. We investigated the impact of sex on this association in patients with cirrhosis assessed for liver transplantation. METHODS: This single-centre retrospective cohort study included adults assessed for liver transplantation. Nutritional status was assessed using the Royal Free Hospital-Global Assessment (RFH-GA). Body composition at the third lumbar vertebrae was determined. SarcopeniaSMI was defined as Skeletal Muscle Index <50 cm2 /m2 in males and <39 cm2 /m2 in females. SarcopeniaPMI was defined as the sex-specific 25th percentile of the Psoas Muscle Index. Patients were assessed for the occurrence of liver transplantation and death. Analyses were stratified by sex. RESULTS: The cohort comprised 628 patients, including 199 females and 429 males. Both groups were similar in terms of baseline liver disease severity by Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD) (p = .98) and nutritional status (p = .24). SarcopeniaSMI was present in 41% of males compared to 27% of females (p < .001). In the male cohort, when adjusted for age and MELD, sarcopeniaPMI (aHR 1.74, 95% CI 1.08-2.80) and RFH-GA (aHR 1.40, 95% CI 1.03-1.90) remained independent predictors of mortality. Adipose tissue had no impact on outcomes in males. In female patients, adipose tissue (TATI or VATI depending on the multivariable model) was independently associated with mortality, whereas sarcopenia and malnutrition were not. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that male patients were susceptible to low muscle mass, whereas female patients were not. Future research in this patient population should minimize sex-related bias and present data for both groups separately.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Growing awareness of the biological and clinical value of nutrition in frailty settings calls for further efforts to investigate dietary gaps to act sooner to achieve focused management of aging populations. We cross-sectionally examined the eating habits of an older Mediterranean population to profile dietary features most associated with physical frailty. METHODS: Clinical and physical examination, routine biomarkers, medical history, and anthropometry were analyzed in 1502 older adults (65 +). CHS criteria were applied to classify physical frailty, and a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire to assess diet. The population was subdivided by physical frailty status (frail or non-frail). Raw and adjusted logistic regression models were applied to three clusters of dietary variables (food groups, macronutrients, and micronutrients), previously selected by a LASSO approach to better predict diet-related frailty determinants. RESULTS: A lower consumption of wine (OR 0.998, 95% CI 0.997-0.999) and coffee (OR 0.994, 95% CI 0.989-0.999), as well as a cluster of macro and micronutrients led by PUFAs (OR 0.939, 95% CI 0.896-0.991), zinc (OR 0.977, 95% CI 0.952-0.998), and coumarins (OR 0.631, 95% CI 0.431-0.971), was predictive of non-frailty, but higher legumes intake (OR 1.005, 95%CI 1.000-1.009) of physical frailty, regardless of age, gender, and education level. CONCLUSIONS: Higher consumption of coffee and wine, as well as PUFAs, zinc, and coumarins, as opposed to legumes, may work well in protecting against a physical frailty profile of aging in a Mediterranean setting. Longitudinal investigations are needed to better understand the causal potential of diet as a modifiable contributor to frailty during aging.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis affects 25% of adults worldwide and its prevalence increases with age. There is currently no definitive treatment for NAFLD but international guidelines recommend a lifestyle-based approach, including a healthy diet. The aim of this study was to investigate the interactions between eating habits and the risk of steatosis and/or hepatic fibrosis, using a machine learning approach, in a non-institutionalized elderly population. METHODS AND RESULTS: We recruited 1929 subjects, mean age 74 years, from the population-based Salus in Apulia Study. Dietary habits and the risk of steatosis and hepatic fibrosis were evaluated with a validated food frequency questionnaire, the Fatty Liver Index (FLI) and the FIB-4 score, respectively. Two dietary patterns associated with the risk of steatosis and hepatic fibrosis have been identified. They are both similar to a "western" diet, defined by a greater consumption of refined foods, with a rich content of sugars and saturated fats, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic calorie drinks. CONCLUSION: This study further supports the concept of diet as a factor that significantly influences the development of the most widespread liver diseases. However, longitudinal studies are needed to better understand the causal effect of the consumption of particular foods on fat accumulation in the liver.

ABSTRACT

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), comprising Crohn's disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC), are multifactorial disorders characterized by a chronic inflammatory status with the secretion of cytokines and immune mediators. Biologic drugs targeting pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as infliximab, are broadly used in the treatment of IBD patients, but some patients lose responsiveness after an initial success. The research into new biomarkers is crucial for advancing personalized therapies and monitoring the response to biologics. The aim of this single center, observational study is to analyze the relationship between serum levels of 90K/Mac-2 BP and the response to infliximab, in a cohort of 48 IBD patients (30 CD and 18 UC), enrolled from February 2017 to December 2018. In our IBD cohort, high 90K serum levels were found at baseline in patients who then developed anti-infliximab antibodies at the fifth infusion (22 weeks after the first), becoming non-responders (9.76 ± 4.65 µg/mL compared to 6.53 ± 3.29 µg/mL in responder patients, p = 0.005). This difference was significant in the total cohort and in CD, but not significant in UC. We then analyzed the relationship between serum levels of 90K, C-reactive protein (CRP), and Fecal calprotectin. A significant positive correlation was found at baseline between 90K and CRP, the most common serum inflammation marker (R = 0.42, p = 0.0032). We concluded that circulating 90K could be considered a new non-invasive biomarker for monitoring the response to infliximab. Furthermore, 90K serum level determination, before the first infliximab infusion, in association with other inflammatory markers such as CRP, could assist in the choice of biologics for the treatment of IBD patients, thereby obviating the need for a drug switch due to loss of response, and so improving clinical practice and patient care.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accounts for more than 75% of primary liver cancers, which are the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. The GALAD (gender, age, AFP-L3, AFP, and des-carboxy-prothrombin) score is a diagnostic tool developed based on gender, age, alpha-fetoprotein, alpha-fetoprotein L3, and des-gamma-carboxy prothrombin, originally designed as a diagnostic tool for HCC in high-risk patients. METHODS: We analyzed 212 patients with and without cirrhosis. The population study was divided into patients with liver cirrhosis without evidence of HCC at the time of serum sample collection for GALAD score determination and patients with liver cirrhosis and a confirmed diagnosis of HCC at the time of serum sample collection for GALAD score determination. Patients were followed up until death or liver transplantation. The association between variables and HCC mortality risk was performed, and the results were presented as hazard ratio (HR). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to assess the performance of the GALAD HCC diagnosis. The survival probability was explored using the non-parametric test, and the equality of survival amongst categories was assessed with the log-rank test. RESULTS: Biomarkers were higher in the HCC group compared to cirrhosis. Kaplan-Meier survival probability analysis for individual GALAD categories revealed that a high GALAD level was associated with decreased survival during follow-up, and the difference between the curves was statistically significant (p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that the GALAD score has promise as a prognostic tool, with implications for improving patient management and treatment strategies for HCC.

BACKGROUND: the possible relationship between dietary habits and the incidence of late-onset depression (LOD), defined as first depression onset at later age, is unclear. OBJECTIVE: to investigate the relationship between consumption of different food groups and incident LOD. DESIGN: longitudinal population-based study with a 12-year follow-up. SETTING: Castellana Grotte, Bari, Italy. SUBJECTS: five hundred and forty-six older subjects from the Salus in Apulia Study. METHODS: baseline data were recorded in 2003-06, and diagnostic data were recorded in 2013-18 at follow-up. Dietary intake was assessed with a food frequency questionnaire. Depressive disorders were assessed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders. Subjects who already suffered from depression or other psychiatric disorders at baseline were excluded from the analysis. The association between LOD and single dietary determinants was examined by Cox regression analysis and then applying the hazard ratio (HR). RESULTS: subjects with incident LOD (n = 34) had lower global cognition and total cholesterol levels and a higher body mass index (BMI) at baseline. Only processed meat significantly increased the risk of incident LOD of about 10% by 5 g/day intake (HR adjusted for age, sex, education, multimorbidity and BMI: 1.13, 95% confidence intervals: 1.04-1.22). A similar relationship was found for single foods in the processed meat food group such as sausages, salami and mortadella and baked ham, but not for raw ham. CONCLUSIONS: in midlife, a higher intake of processed meat was not only associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular- and metabolic-related chronic diseases in older age but also with an increased risk of developing LOD.

AIM: The present pilot RCT aimed to investigate the influence of a connective tissue graft (CTG) in combination with the immediate implant placement (IIP) on hard and soft tissue healing, without a bone replacement graft in the gap between the implant and the socket walls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients requiring extraction of one anterior tooth (from premolar to premolar) were randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups (test: IIP + CTG; control: IIP). Cone-beam computed tomography and optically scans were performed before tooth extraction and at 6-month follow-up. Then, DICOM files were superimposed in order to allow the evaluation of osseous ridge and buccal bone changes, while the superimposition of DICOM and Standard Tessellation Language files allowed for evaluating of soft tissue contour. For testing the differences between the two groups, the non-parametric test as Wilcoxon rank-sum test, was used. RESULTS: Twenty-six of the 30 enrolled patients attended the 6-month follow-up visit. The four patients of the control group that were lost to follow-up were analysed under the intention-to-treat principle. No statistically significant differences between the groups were observed for the vertical buccal bone resorption (p = .90), as well as for the horizontal buccal bone resorption at all measured levels. Significant differences were found between the test and control groups in the horizontal dimensional changes of osseous ridge at the most coronal aspect (p = .0003 and p = .02). Changes in tissue contour were between -0.32 and -0.04 mm in the test group and between -1.94 and -1.08 mm in the control group, while changes in soft tissue thickness varied between 1.33 and 2.42 mm in the test group and between -0.16 and 0.88 mm in the control group, with statistically significant differences for both variables at all measured levels. At 6 months, the mean volume increase was 6.76 ± 8.94 mm3 and 0.16 ± 0.42 mm3 in the test and control groups, respectively, with a statistically significant difference. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the present study indicate that the adjunct of a CTG at the time of IIP, without bone grafting, does not influence vertical bone resorption. Within the limits of this study, it can be suggested that the adjunct of a CTG at the time of IIP, without bone grafting, reduces the horizontal changes of the alveolar ridge. Moreover, it allows maintenance of the tissue contour due to an increase in soft tissue thickness.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a common and disabling condition. The importance of healthy lifestyle for this disease is poorly explored. OBJECTIVE: To test whether adherence to healthier lifestyle patterns is associated with a lower presence of multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS: By using a case-control design, we investigated the combined association of four healthy lifestyle-related factors (no current smoking, healthy diet, exercising regularly, body mass index <30 kg/m2) and the prevalence of MS. A logistic regression analysis, adjusted for potential confounders, was used and data reported as odds ratios (ORs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: 728 participants with MS were matched with healthy controls (n = 2,912) using a propensity score approach. In a multivariable analysis, compared to those who scored low in the composite lifestyle score (0-1 healthy lifestyle factors), people who adopted all four low risk lifestyle factors showed a 71% lower odds of having MS (OR = 0.29; 95% CI: 0.15-0.56). Moreover, there was a strong linear trend, suggesting that the higher number of healthy lifestyle behaviors was associated with lower odds of having MS. CONCLUSION: Following a healthy lifestyle is associated with a lower prevalence of MS. This association should be explored further in cohort studies.

OBJECTIVES: Consistency among population-based studies investigating the relationship between diet and cognition in older inhabitants in the Mediterranean area is poor. The present study investigated whether diet changes over 12 years were associated with cognitive function in older people in Southern-Italy. METHODS: From the 'Salus in Apulia Study', that includes the MICOL and GreatAGE Studies, 584 participants were selected, firstly enrolled in MICOL3 (M3) and later in the GreatAGE Study (MICOL4, M4). Foods and micronutrients intake were recorded in both studies, and global cognitive function in M4, assessed with the Mini Mental State Examination. RESULTS: Plant-based foods, particularly coffee and vegetables, as well as vitamin A sources, were inversely associated to age-related cognitive impairment. Alcohol consumption showed a detrimental role on cognition, while red meat appeared to be beneficial in the present study, although its role is traditionally considered harmful for cognitive function. DISCUSSION: Our study confirmed that a traditional Mediterranean dietary pattern based on agricultural products and low alcohol consumption may help to prevent/delay age-related cognitive impairment.

Dietary behaviour is a core element in diabetes self-management. There are no remarkable differences between nutritional guidelines for people with type 2 diabetes and healthy eating recommendations for the general public. This study aimed to evaluate dietary differences between subjects with and without diabetes and to describe any emerging dietary patterns characterizing diabetic subjects. In this cross-sectional study conducted on older adults from Southern Italy, eating habits in the "Diabetic" and "Not Diabetic" groups were assessed with FFQ, and dietary patterns were derived using an unsupervised learning algorithm: principal component analysis. Diabetic subjects (n = 187) were more likely to be male, slightly older, and with a slightly lower level of education than subjects without diabetes. The diet of diabetic subjects reflected a high-frequency intake of dairy products, eggs, vegetables and greens, fresh fruit and nuts, and olive oil. On the other hand, the consumption of sweets and sugary foods was reduced compared to non-diabetics (23.74 ± 35.81 vs. 16.52 ± 22.87; 11.08 ± 21.85 vs. 7.22 ± 15.96). The subjects without diabetes had a higher consumption of red meat, processed meat, ready-to-eat dishes, alcoholic drinks, and lower vegetable consumption. The present study demonstrated that, in areas around the Mediterranean Sea, older subjects with diabetes had a healthier diet than their non-diabetic counterparts.

INTRODUCTION: In subjects with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), advanced fibrosis (AF) carries the highest risk of adverse liver-related events. To reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies, several noninvasive tools (NITs) for the risk stratification of fibrosis have been developed. We conducted this meta-analysis to assess the performance of the fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4) and NAFLD fibrosis scores (NFS), the 2 most common NITs, for the appropriate selection of subjects with AF for biopsy. METHODS: Four databases were searched until December 2020 (CRD42021224766). Original articles reporting data on the performance of FIB-4 and NFS, interpreted according to standard cutoffs in subjects with biopsy-proven NAFLD, were included. Separate data extractions were performed according to the lower cutoff, the higher cutoff, and the dual threshold approach. The numbers of subjects classified as true-negative, true-positive, false-negative, and false-positive were extracted. Summary operating points were estimated using a random-effects model. RESULTS: Eighteen studies evaluating 12,604 subjects were included. Participants were adult outpatients with biopsy-proven NAFLD or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Overall, a weak-to-moderate performance was found for both scores. The head-to-head comparison showed FIB-4 to be associated with a higher performance in ruling in and NFS in ruling out AF in the single threshold approach, whereas, with the dual threshold approach, a lower prevalence of indeterminate findings was found for FIB-4. DISCUSSION: This meta-analysis suggested that currently available NITs have a limited performance in identifying AF among subjects with NAFLD. Further studies are needed to optimize existing thresholds or develop new NITs.

INTRODUCTION: Preventive nutritional management of frailty, a multidimensional intermediate status in the ageing process, may reduce the risk of adverse health-related outcomes. We investigated the ability of a measure combining physical frailty with nutritional imbalance, defined as nutritional frailty, to predict all-cause mortality over a period of up to 8 years. METHODS: We analysed data on 1,943 older adults from the population-based 'Salus in Apulia Study'. Physical frailty was operationalized using Cardiovascular Health Study criteria and cognitive frailty by combining physical frailty with cognitive impairment. A novel five-item construct was built to assess the extent of nutritional imbalance identified with a machine learning algorithm. Cox models and Kaplan-Meier survival probability analyses of physical frailty, nutritional imbalance (two or more of the following: low body mass index, low skeletal muscle index, ≥2.3 g/day sodium intake, <3.35 g/day potassium intake and <9.9 g/day iron intake), cognitive frailty and the novel nutritional frailty phenotype (physical frailty plus nutritional imbalance) were applied to assess all-cause mortality risk, adjusted for age, sex, education and multimorbidity. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of nutritional frailty was 4.52% (95% confidence interval, CI:3.55-5.44), being more frequent in males. Subjects with nutritional frailty were at higher risk for all-cause mortality [hazard ratio (HR):2.31; 95%CI:1.41-3.79] than those with physical frailty (HR:1.45,95% CI:1.0-2.02), nutritional imbalance (HR:1.39; 95%CI:1.05-1.83) and cognitive frailty (HR:1.06; 95%CI:0.56-2.01). CONCLUSIONS: Efforts to identify, manage and prevent frailty should include the nutritional domain. The nutritional frailty phenotype may highlight major nutritional determinants that could drive survival and health trajectories in older adults.

ABSTRACT

To identify useful markers for prognostic and therapeutic purposes, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) provided a molecular classification of gastric cancers (GCs). Previous studies have used immunohistochemistry (IHC) and chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH) to define immunophenotypic surrogate markers of the molecular alterations. Some critical issues concerning the correct definition of immunophenotypic groups have emerged in these studies that employed tissue microarrays (TMAs). We performed an immunophenotypic classification by evaluating MLH1, p53, HER2, E-cadherin, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) on the whole section of the surgical GC samples compared to most of the studies conducted on TMAs. We also investigated the immunohistochemical expression of PD-L1, a known therapeutic target. We identified the following immunophenotypic groups: EBV (2.9%); mismatch repair deficient (MMR-D) (7.2%); overexpressed p53 and/or HER2+ (61.4%); aberrant E-cadherin (11.4%); and normal pattern (17.1%). The use of surgical samples emphasized that some immunohistochemical markers were not useful for properly classifying the GC specimens. We can state that EBV (significantly correlated to PD-L1 expression) and MMR-D GCs are well-defined groups, mutually exclusive, and easily assessable with IHC and CISH, and could be candidates for immunotherapy with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors. As regards p53, our findings suggest that IHC assessment may be responsible for a misclassification of GC groups. Immunohistochemical evaluation of E-cadherin needs to be standardized, particularly in terms of the heterogeneous cytoplasmic/membranous staining pattern. Whether to consider the normal-pattern group as a separate category remains to be clarified. Because GC specimens with known therapeutic targets account for only 40%, we suggest reviewing the immunophenotypic classification to find new therapeutic targets, such as PD-L1, MLH1, and HER2.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Increasing literature data show that adherence to the Mediterranean diet is undergoing profound changes in recent years, albeit with marked differences across nations. In Italy, one of the cradles of the Mediterranean diet, the literature regarding the trend for Mediterranean diet adherence is conflicting. Thus, we aimed to explore the trends of adherence to the Mediterranean diet in a large cohort of participants living in South Italy, over 20 years from 1985-86 to 2005-06. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cross-sectional study with two evaluations, one made in 1985-86 and another in 2005-06; all participants were adults aged 30-70 years of age. The adherence to the Mediterranean diet was evaluated using the score proposed by Panagiotakos et al. This score features values ranging from 0 to 55, higher scores reflecting a greater adherence. The data are reported by age (30-49 vs. 50-69 years). Overall, 2451 subjects were included in 1985-86 and 2375 in 2005-06. A significant reduction was observed in the adherence to the Mediterranean diet (age 30-49 years: 31.82 ± 4.18 in 1985-86 vs. 29.20 ± 4.48 in 2005-06, reduction by 8.2%, p < 0.0001; age 50-69: 32.20 ± 4.09 in 1985-86 vs.30.15 ± 4.27 in 2005-06, reduction by 6.3%, p < 0.0001). Among all these items, the most dramatic change was observed for olive oil consumption, that decreased by 2.35 points in younger and 0.89 in older people. CONCLUSION: The adherence to the Mediterranean diet decreased from 1985-86 to 2005-06 in South Italy, particularly in younger people, above all due to a decreased olive oil consumption.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs) are increasingly consumed worldwide, even in regions with strong dietary traditions like the Mediterranean and can play a crucial role in the development of chronic diseases, including cancer. This population-based prospective cohort study investigates the association between UPF consumption and gastrointestinal cancers and other causes of mortality in Southern Italy. METHODS: Data were collected from 4870 participants in the MICOL and NUTRIHEP cohorts. The EPIC questionnaire was used to elicit information on food and drink consumption and UPFs were categorized by degree of processing according to the NOVA classification. Cox proportional hazards regression and competing risk models were employed for statistical analysis. RESULTS: UPF consumption was positively associated with all-cause mortality: participants in the 3rd UFP quartile, as compared to the lowest, had a 27% higher risk of death (SHR 1.27 95% CI, 1.03; 1.57), while in the highest quartile as compared to the lowest, the risk was 34% higher (SHR 1.34 95% CI, 1.00; 1.79). Higher UPFs intake was also correlated with an increased gastrointestinal cancers mortality risk, especially the 2nd (SHR 1.65, 95% CI: 1.01; 2.71) and 4th quartile (SHR 3.14 95% CI: 1.56; 6.32), with a dose-dependent effect. For the other cancers, a SHR 1.61 (95% CI 1.03; 2.54) was observed for the 3rd quartile. CONCLUSIONS: Our results reinforce the link between UPF consumption and cancer risk, emphasizing the urgent need for interventions targeting dietary patterns.

BACKGROUND: Liver diseases are constantly increasing throughout the world and are often associated with other diseases, but above all they are caused by improper diet. Adherence to a diet with abundant vegetables has now been widely demonstrated to be important in combating this pathological condition. The aim of this study was to explore the protective role of lycopene (LYC) extracts from cooked and fresh tomato. METHODS: The study cohort included 969 participants assessed in the NUTRIHEP cohort (2005-2006) and the associated follow-up (2014-2016), divided into two groups, based on liver condition: NAFLD, or AFLD and FLD. RESULTS: The results indicated a statistical significance of LYC consumption, showing a protective role against liver disease, the best concentration being 9.50 mg/die, with an RR value of 0.59, p = 0.01, 0.39 to 0.90 at 95% C.I., and RRR = 0.40, p = 0.002, 0.22 to 0.71 at 95% C.I. CONCLUSIONS: The protective role of LYC extracts from tomato has not been amply demonstrated in humans. We conclude that this is one of the few papers in the literature to evaluate the protective effect of LYC against liver disease, as well as how this molecule could be used in future possible treatments. Utilizing lycopene as a supplement alone or in combination with other foods could be useful for developing treatments with reduced contraindications.
