ABSTRACT

Aqueous zinc (Zn) batteries have been regarded as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries due to their high abundance, low cost, and higher intrinsic safety. However, the low Zn plating/stripping reversibility, Zn dendrite growth, and continuous water consumption have hindered the practical application of aqueous Zn anodes. Herein, a hydrous organic Zn-ion electrolyte based on a dual organic solvent, namely hydrated Zn(BF4)2 zinc salt dissolved in dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and vinyl carbonate (EC) solvents [denoted as Zn(BF4)2/DMC/EC], can address these problems, which not only inhibits the side reactions but also promotes uniform Zn plating/stripping through the formation of a stable solid state interface layer and Zn2+-EC/2DMC pairs. This electrolyte enables the Zn electrode to stably undergo >700 cycles at a rate of 1 mA cm-2 with a Coulombic efficiency of 99.71%. Moreover, the full cell paired with V2O5 also demonstrates excellent cycling stability without capacity decay at 1 A g-1 after 1600 cycles.

ABSTRACT

One of the most unique and impressive feats of the human mind is its ability to discover and continuously refine its own cognitive strategies. Elucidating the underlying learning and adaptation mechanisms is very difficult because changes in cognitive strategies are not directly observable. One important domain in which strategies and mechanisms are studied is planning. To enable researchers to uncover how people learn how to plan, we offer a tutorial introduction to a recently developed process-tracing paradigm along with a new computational method for measuring the nature and development of a person's planning strategies from the resulting process-tracing data. Our method allows researchers to reveal experience-driven changes in people's choice of individual planning operations, planning strategies, strategy types, and the relative contributions of different decision systems. We validate our method on simulated and empirical data. On simulated data, its inferences about the strategies and the relative influence of different decision systems are accurate. When evaluated on human data generated using our process-tracing paradigm, our computational method correctly detects the plasticity-enhancing effect of feedback and the effect of the structure of the environment on people's planning strategies. Together, these methods can be used to investigate the mechanisms of cognitive plasticity and to elucidate how people acquire complex cognitive skills such as planning and problem-solving. Importantly, our methods can also be used to measure individual differences in cognitive plasticity and examine how different types (pedagogical) interventions affect the acquisition of cognitive skills.

ABSTRACT

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is an important neuropeptide in the reproductive system. Although GnRH analogues have been used to artificially spawn pompano (Trachinotus sp.), the native forms of GnRH have not been described in this species. In this study three GnRH subtypes [sea bream GnRH (sbGnRH), chicken GnRH-Ⅱ (cGnRH-Ⅱ) and salmon GnRH (sGnRH)] were identified in pompano (Trachinotus ovatus). cgnrh-Ⅱ and sgnrh were mainly expressed in the brain of male and female fish, showing a tissue-specific expression pattern, while sbgnrh was expressed at different transcriptional levels in all tested tissues. In vivo injection experiment showed that sbGnRH significantly increased fsh and lh genes expression in a dose-dependent manner, but a high concentration of sbGnRH could desensitize the expression of lh. High concentrations of cGnRH-Ⅱ and sGnRH could induce the expression of fsh and lh. In addition, the results of in vitro incubation experiments showed that the high concentration of sbGnRH peptide could induce the expression of fsh and lh, while cGnRH-Ⅱ and sGnRH peptides could only induce the expression of fsh. 17ß-estradiol (E2) and 17α-methyltestosterone (MT) significantly inhibited sbgnrh mRNA expression in a dose-dependent manner, but did not affect the expression of cgnrh-Ⅱ and sgnrh mRNA. sbGnRH is the main GnRH subtype in pompano. E2 and MT can play a negative role in the regulation of sbgnrh. This study provides a theoretical basis for the reproductive endocrinology of pompano.

ABSTRACT

Objective: COPD is the most common chronic respiratory disease with complex environmental and genetic etiologies. It was reported that EPAS1 might participate in the occurrence and development of respiratory diseases. However, the association between EPAS1 and COPD was unclear. Methods: First, a case-control study enrolling 1130 COPD patients and 1115 healthy controls in Guangzhou was conducted to clarify the association between EPAS1 polymorphisms and COPD susceptibility. Secondly, a prevalence study recruited 882 participants in Gansu to verify the effect of positive polymorphisms on lung function. Finally, the 10-year absolute risk considering environmental factors and genetic variations was calculated by the method of Gail and Bruzzi. Results: EPAS1 rs13419896 AA genotype reduced COPD risk in southern Chinese (AA vs. GG: adjusted OR = 0.689, 95% CI = 0.498-0.955; AA vs. GG/GA: adjusted OR = 0.701, 95% CI = 0.511-0.962). Further, the rs13419896 A allele was significantly associated with higher pre-FEV1/pre-FVC in both the Guangzhou and Gansu populations (P < 0.05). Smoking status, coal as fuels, education level, and rs13419896 G > A were finally retained to develop a relative risk model for males. Smoking status, biomass as fuels, and rs13419896 G > A were retained in the female model. The population-attributable risk of the male or female model was 0.457 (0.283-0.632) and 0.421 (0.227-0.616), respectively. Conclusions: This study first revealed that EPAS1 rs13419896 G > A decreased COPD susceptibility and could be a genetic marker to predict the 10-year absolute risk for COPD.
