ABSTRACT

This paper presents a low loss suspended core microstructured fiber with ultra-high birefringence for terahertz wave guidance. The finite element method (FEM) with a perfectly matched layer is applied to investigate different important properties including effective material loss (EML), birefringence, dispersion, confinement loss, and percentage of power flow through the core. The suspended elliptical core in the design creates asymmetry and results in an unprecedented value of birefringence. The simulated results using FEM at 1 THz show an extremely ultra-high birefringence (the highest, to the best of our knowledge) of 0.1116, a nominal EML of 0.04716cm-1, a negligible confinement loss of 2.65×10-7cm-1, a higher power fraction in the core air of 35%, and an effective modal area of 1.24×105µm. The advancement in technology makes the fabrication possible. The proposed fiber could be used satisfactorily in the terahertz regime for various polarization-preserving applications and coherent communication.

ABSTRACT

In this study, graphene oxide (GO) derived from waste Zinc-Carbon (Zn-C) batteries was proposed for the efficient removal of antibiotics from the aqueous solution. Ciprofloxacin (CIP) antibiotic was selected as a typical contaminants. GO was prepared via an economical and environment-friendly route by using carbon rods from waste Zn-C batteries as the precursor. Characterization techniques were applied to determine the properties of as prepared GO. Effects of pH, contact time, and adsorbent dose on the adsorption were explored, and an optimum condition was established. Adsorption equilibrium was established in just 20 min for maximum removal of CIP (99.0%) at pH 5.7 for the adsorbent dose of 20 mg L-1 and at the initial concentration of CIP 2.0 mg L-1. The rapid and efficient removal of CIP was greatly influenced by the electrostatic attractions, pi-pi interactions and hydrogen bonding on the surface and edge of GO which was also proved by density functional theory (DFT). Langmuir model showed the best fit among the isotherm models and the calculated maximum adsorption capacity (qm) was 419.62 mg g-1 at 30°C. The kinetic studies also revealed that the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model. The endothermic and spontaneous nature of adsorption was evaluated in thermodynamic studies.

ABSTRACT

Breast cancer (BC) is the most widespread cancer worldwide. Over 2 million new cases of BC were identified in 2020 alone. Despite previous studies, the lack of specific biomarkers and signaling pathways implicated in BC impedes the development of potential therapeutic strategies. We employed several RNAseq datasets to extract differentially expressed genes (DEGs) based on the intersection of all datasets, followed by protein-protein interaction network construction. Using the shared DEGs, we also identified significant gene ontology (GO) and KEGG pathways to understand the signaling pathways involved in BC development. A molecular docking simulation was performed to explore potential interactions between proteins and drugs. The intersection of the four datasets resulted in 146 DEGs common, including AURKB, PLK1, TTK, UBE2C, CDCA8, KIF15, and CDC45 that are significant hub-proteins associated with breastcancer development. These genes are crucial in complement activation, mitotic cytokinesis, aging, and cancer development. We identified key microRNAs (i.e., hsa-miR-16-5p, hsa-miR-1-3p, hsa-miR-147a, hsa-miR-195-5p, and hsa-miR-155-5p) that are associated with aggressive tumor behavior and poor clinical outcomes in BC. Notable transcription factors (TFs) were FOXC1, GATA2, FOXL1, ZNF24 and NR2F6. These biomarkers are involved in regulating cancer cell proliferation, invasion, and migration. Finally, molecular docking suggested Hesperidin, 2-amino-isoxazolopyridines, and NMS-P715 as potential lead compounds against BC progression. We believe that these findings will provide important insight into the BC progression as well as potential biomarkers and drug candidates for therapeutic development.

ABSTRACT

Background: Most maternal deaths occur during childbirth and after childbirth. This study was aimed at determining the trends of health facilities during delivery in Bangladesh, as well as their influencing factors. Methods: This study used secondary data from three Bangladesh Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICSs) in 2006, 2012-13, and 2019. The study's target sample was those women who gave birth in the last two years of the survey. A two-level logistic regression was applied to determine the effects on health facility delivery separately in these two survey points (MICSs 2012-13 and 2019). Results: The results show that the delivery of health facilities has increased by almost 37.4% in Bangladesh, from 16% in 2006 to 53.4% in 2019. The results of two-level logistic regression show that the total variation in health facility delivery across the community has decreased over recent years. After adding community variables, various individual-level factors such as women with secondary education (OR = 0.55 in 2012-13 vs. OR =0.60 in 2019), women from middle wealth status (OR = 0.49 in 2012-13 vs. OR = 0.65 in 2019), religion, and child ever born showed a strong relationship with health facility delivery in both survey years. At the community level, residents showed significant association only in the 2012-13 survey and indicated a 43% (OR = 1.43 for 2012-13) greater availability of health facilities in urban residences than in rural residences. Using media showed a highly significant connection with health facility delivery in both years as well as an increasing trend over the years in Bangladesh (OR = 1.19 in 2012-13 vs. OR = 1.38 in 2019). However, division, prenatal care, and skilled services all contribute greatly to increasing the delivery of health facilities in Bangladesh. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that policymakers need to pay attention to individual and community-level factors, especially women's education, poverty reduction, and adequate prenatal care provided by well-trained caregivers.

ABSTRACT

Background: Vaccination of teachers is recommended during the COVID-19 pandemic to reduce the risk of infection for themselves and their students, as well as to encourage their parents to get immunized. The present study investigated the mental health outcomes and associated factors among vaccinated and unvaccinated teachers against COVID-19 infection in Bangladesh. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Bangladesh from March 4 to September 9, 2021. The frequency of symptoms of psychological distress, depression, anxiety, stress, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), insomnia, and fear was assessed using the Bangla versions of the GHQ-12, PHQ-2, GAD-2, PSS-4, PC-PTSD-5, ISI, and FCV-19S scales, respectively. Results: A total of 1,527 Bangladeshi teachers completed the questionnaire, with 678 (44.4%) being vaccinated and 849 (55.6%) being unvaccinated. Compared with unvaccinated teachers, vaccinated teachers had a statistically significant lower prevalence of psychological distress (35.8 vs. 42.9%), depression (37.6 vs. 46.4%), anxiety (31.9 vs. 45.1%), stress (18.3 vs. 32.0%), PTSD (33.0 vs. 43.8%), insomnia (25.2 vs. 36.9%), and fear symptoms (23.3 vs. 29.6%). Among vaccinated teachers, participants with master's or lower degree levels had significantly higher symptoms of depression, stress, and fear than other education levels. Respondents with children had a significantly higher risk of depression, anxiety, stress, and fear symptoms than those who did not have children. Participants who lost family members, friends, or colleagues due to the COVID-19 pandemic had a significantly higher chance of experiencing symptoms of anxiety, PTSD, and fear than those who did not. On the other hand, unvaccinated male teachers were significantly associated with a higher risk of all mental health outcomes except psychological distress and PTSD symptoms compared to female teachers. Participants who were smokers had a significantly higher chance of anxiety, stress, and fear symptoms than non-smokers. Compared to participants with strong social support, those with poor social support had a higher risk of all mental health outcomes except PTSD symptoms. Conclusion: This study suggests emphasizing the vaccinated to unvaccinated teachers as soon as possible to control the infection and improve mental health outcomes. Vulnerable teachers also required special attention, health-related education, and psychological support.
