ABSTRACT

Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are drinks that contain added sugar or sweeteners and provide calories with no additional nutrients, and some countries have imposed additional taxes on the SSBs to reduce consumption, which is considered an SSB tax policy. This study used a cross-sectional online survey to examine the patterns of public support for an SSB tax in Taiwan. The sample included 1617 adults aged ≥ 20 years, who answered the survey questionnaire between May 2020 and April 2021. The respondents were recruited using convenience sampling, but sampling weights were applied to represent the Taiwanese population. Generalized ordered logit models with sampling weights were used to examine the correlates of public support for an SSB tax. Results showed that ~60% of the respondents supported the SSB tax and 47% perceived the tax to be effective. The respondents who were aware of the perceived health risks of SSBs or those who believed that one should be partly responsible for the health impact of SSBs were more likely to show support for the SSB tax. In adjusted regression models, both one's perceived risk and perceived responsibility of SSBs were positively associated with the perceived effectiveness of the SSB tax after sociodemographic characteristics were controlled. These research findings show evidence that there is public support for implementing an SSB tax to reduce SSB consumption in Taiwan.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to develop and validate the psychometric properties of a novel instrument that measures Indoor Air Pollution Health Literacy (IAPHL). The qualitative phase was conducted to design questions based on the conceptual model of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire. We developed a 38-item instrument covering 12 constructs, that is, four information competencies within three health domains to assess IAPHL. A cross-sectional online video survey of 647 adults aged 20 years and above in Taiwan was conducted. Various measures of validity and reliability coefficients were assessed to indicate the psychometric properties of the IAPHL instrument. The content validity indices for relevance, importance, and clarity of the 38 questions were 0.97, 0.96, and 0.89, respectively. The model fit indices obtained from the confirmatory factor analysis supported the acceptable structures of the theoretically hypothetical 12-factor model (standardized root mean square residual = 0.055; root mean square error of approximation = 0.065). Internal consistency for the instrument showed a Cronbach's alpha of 0.96. The IAPHL instrument developed in this study showed satisfactory validity and reliability and can be used in future fieldwork.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the level of and covariates associated with ambient air pollution health literacy (AAPHL) among adult residents of Taiwan. METHODS: With a cross-sectional study design, we conducted telephone interviews using a Chinese version AAPHL scale, which consisted of 24 items assessing 12 subdomains of AAPHL formed by 4 information processing competence matrices (i.e., access, understand, appraise, and apply) and 3 health contexts (i.e., healthcare, disease prevention, and health promotion). The AAPHL was with the lowest and highest score at 1 to 4, respectively. Between September and November 2020, a sample of 1017 and 280 adults was successfully interviewed via home phones and mobile phones, respectively. We employed multiple linear regression models to identify covariates significantly associated with overall and 4 matric-specific AAPHL scores. RESULTS: The mean and standard deviation (±SD) of overall AAPHL score was considered as moderate at 2.90 (±0.56), with the highest and lowest metric-specific score for "apply" (3.07 ± 0.59) and "appraise" (2.75 ± 0.66). Lower education was significantly associated with a lower overall score; and living with children < 12 years and single were both significantly associated with higher overall scores. We also noted a significant geographic variation in overall score in which people living in the east/remote islands had highest scores. CONCLUSIONS: People in Taiwan had only moderate level of AAPHL; and covariates including education, living arrangement, marital status, and area of living were significantly associated with AAPHL. These covariates should be considered in future educational interventions aiming to improve the AAPHL in the community.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although some effects of gene-gene interactions on nicotine-dopamine metabolism for smoking behavior have been reported, polymorphisms of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2A6 and catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) have not been studied together to determine their effects on smokers. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the interaction between the CYP 2A6 and COMT genes on smoking behavior in young Taiwanese men. RESULTS: A self-report questionnaire regarding smoking status was administered to 500 young men. Polymorphisms of the CYP 2A6 and COMT genes as well as urinary nicotine and urinary cotinine levels were determined. The odds ratio for starting smoking was significantly lower in subjects carrying a CYP2A6 low activity/variant COMT rs4680 genotype than in those possessing a CYP2A6 wild-type/variant COMT rs4680 genotype (0.44, 95% confidence interval = 0.19-0.98, P = 0.043). Comparisons of Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND), Physiological Cigarette Dependence Scale (PCDS), and Cigarette Withdrawal symptoms (CWS-21) among the smokers with different CYP2A6/COMT polymorphisms were not significantly different. The adjusted urinary nicotine concentrations were not significantly different between the two groups carrying different genotypes. The adjusted urinary cotinine level was significantly different between the COMT rs4680 wild-type group and COMT rs4680 variant group [92.46 ng/µL vs. 118.24 ng/µL (median value), P = 0.041] and between the COMT rs4680 wild-type/COMT rs165599 variant group and COMT rs4680 variant/COMT rs165599 variant group (97.10 ng/µL vs. 122.18 ng/µL, P = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that a single nucleotide polymorphism (rs4680) of the COMT gene and the interaction between the CYP 2A6 and COMT genes affect smoking status in young Taiwanese men.

ABSTRACT

We aimed to develop and validate a comprehensive ambient air pollution health literacy instrument. We developed items covering 12 constructs, four information competencies within three health domains. In this population-based telephone interview study, probability proportional to size sampling and random digit dialing were used to determine participants. We conducted confirmatory factor analysis to analyze model fits and used content validity indices and Cronbach's alpha to measure content validity and internal consistency reliability. Twenty-four items were generated, and a total of 1,297 participants were recruited. A theoretically conceived 12-factor model was supported (root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = 0.068, comparative fit index [CFI] = 0.039, standardized root mean square residual [SRMR] = 0.934, normed fit index [NFI] = 0.914, Tucker-Lewis index [TLI] = 0.902). Content validity indices for relevance, importance, and unambiguity were 0.97, 0.99, and 0.94, respectively. Internal consistency reliability assessed by Cronbach's alpha was 0.93. The ambient air pollution health literacy instrument is valid and reliable and can be used in community residents. The novel instrument can guide the stakeholders and the authority to tailor and implement effective and appropriate interventions and actions, empowering the public to manage hazardous exposure and improving AAPHL of the public.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to compare the effects of CO/CO(2) reducing conditions with those of air oxidizing conditions on the pouring temperature of the sludge melting process and the heavy metal leachability of the resultant sludge slag. Synthetic sludge ash composed of SiO(2), CaO and Al(2)O(3), as well as sewage sludge ash generated from a laboratory incinerator was employed. The experimental results indicated that the pouring temperatures are significantly reduced under the reducing conditions of CO/CO(2), or 24 and 77 degrees C lower than under air conditions for synthetic and sludge ash, respectively. The heavy metal leaching tests further indicate lower heavy metal concentrations present in the leachate under the reducing conditions, notably an order of magnitude lower in Zn. However, X-ray diffractogram indicates similar peaks for these two slags produced under different conditions.

ABSTRACT

This work explores the effect of additives on the pouring temperature in a waterworks and industrial calcium fluoride sludge co-melting system. Two kinds of sludge were mixed in various ratios to find a mixing ratio at which the operating temperature for subsequent additive tests was relatively low. Various proportions of either sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) or potassium carbonate (K2CO3) reagent were added to the mixed-sludge samples to elucidate the consequent changes in pouring temperature. The experimental results revealed that the pouring temperature was lowest when calcium fluoride was mixed with waterworks sludge in a ratio of 4:6 (w/w). Adding sodium carbonate or potassium carbonate reagent to the mixed-sludge samples further reduced the pouring temperature. Increasing the amount of sodium carbonate did not significantly reduce the pouring temperature beyond that observed when 2% was added, suggesting that 2% was the optimal additional percentage of sodium carbonate. In contrast, the pouring temperature was increased when over 2% potassium carbonate was added to the mixed-sludge samples, revealing that the optimal additional percentage of potassium carbonate was also 2%. These findings indicate that both sodium carbonate and potassium carbonate can be used as additives to increase the energy efficiency of the melting process, but sodium carbonate is more operationally convenient.

This study was undertaken to determine the effects of using an electret filter on aerosol penetration. Various factors, including particle size (0.05 to 0.5 micro m), aerosol charge state (neutral and single charge), face velocity (0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 1.0 m/s), and relative humidity (RH 30% and RH 70%), were examined to assess their effects on aerosol collection characteristics. The results presented here demonstrate that the electric fields of the electret and discharged filter were -1.53 x 104 and -1.3 x 102 (V/m). The penetration through the electret filter with singly charged aerosol and neutral aerosol ranged from 0.4% to 13% and 14% to 29%, respectively. According to these results, the coulombic capture force was dominant for the smaller aerosol and the dielectrophoretic capture mechanism was considered important for the larger aerosol. The level of penetration through the electret filter increased with increasing face velocity and relative humidity. The temperature did not affect the penetration through the electret. Furthermore, from the regression analysis conducted during the operating conditions of this work, the aerosol charge was shown to exert the greatest influence on aerosol penetration.

ABSTRACT

This study presents the result of using melting to recover both industrial sludge slag (the main constituent of which is calcium fluoride) and water works sludge slag as fine aggregate in cement. The main characteristics of both slag and cement mortars were measured to evaluate the feasibility of using slag as aggregate. In this study, the slag replacement ratios were 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50% (w/w), and the curing periods were 7, 28, and 90 days. Slag quality was determined according to the standards of fine aggregates in the ASTM specifications, and cement mortars with various slag replacement ratios were evaluated based on their compressive strength, and Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). The crushed slag produced in this study met the ASTM standards for fine aggregate, including gravity, unit weight, absorption, and grading, and the TCLP leached concentrations are far below existing limits, establishing the safety and suitability of slag as fine aggregate. The TCLP leached concentrations of slag and cement mortar were not significantly related to the replacement ratio, and declined with increasing curing period, revealing that the hydration strongly influenced metal leaching. The compressive strength test results of the cement mortars demonstrated that the optimal replacement ratio for maximizing compressive strength was 40%. This study also discussed the effects of replacement ratio and curing periods on cement mortars.
