ABSTRACT

The most extreme environments are the most vulnerable to transformation under a rapidly changing climate. These ecosystems harbor some of the most specialized species, which will likely suffer the highest extinction rates. We document the steepest temperature increase (2010-2021) on record at altitudes of above 4,000 m, triggering a decline of the relictual and highly adapted moss Takakia lepidozioides. Its de-novo-sequenced genome with 27,467 protein-coding genes includes distinct adaptations to abiotic stresses and comprises the largest number of fast-evolving genes under positive selection. The uplift of the study site in the last 65 million years has resulted in life-threatening UV-B radiation and drastically reduced temperatures, and we detected several of the molecular adaptations of Takakia to these environmental changes. Surprisingly, specific morphological features likely occurred earlier than 165 mya in much warmer environments. Following nearly 400 million years of evolution and resilience, this species is now facing extinction.

ABSTRACT

Disruption of susceptibility (S) genes in crops is an attractive breeding strategy for conferring disease resistance1,2. However, S genes are implicated in many essential biological functions and deletion of these genes typically results in undesired pleiotropic effects1. Loss-of-function mutations in one such S gene, Mildew resistance locus O (MLO), confers durable and broad-spectrum resistance to powdery mildew in various plant species2,3. However, mlo-associated resistance is also accompanied by growth penalties and yield losses3,4, thereby limiting its widespread use in agriculture. Here we describe Tamlo-R32, a mutant with a 304-kilobase pair targeted deletion in the MLO-B1 locus of wheat that retains crop growth and yields while conferring robust powdery mildew resistance. We show that this deletion results in an altered local chromatin landscape, leading to the ectopic activation of Tonoplast monosaccharide transporter 3 (TaTMT3B), and that this activation alleviates growth and yield penalties associated with MLO disruption. Notably, the function of TMT3 is conserved in other plant species such as Arabidopsis thaliana. Moreover, precision genome editing facilitates the rapid introduction of this mlo resistance allele (Tamlo-R32) into elite wheat varieties. This work demonstrates the ability to stack genetic changes to rescue growth defects caused by recessive alleles, which is critical for developing high-yielding crop varieties with robust and durable disease resistance.

ABSTRACT

Perinatal depression, with a prevalence of 10 to 20% in United States, is usually missed as multiple symptoms of perinatal depression are common in pregnant women. Worse, the diagnosis of perinatal depression still largely relies on questionnaires, leaving the objective biomarker being unveiled yet. This study suggested a safe and non-invasive technique to diagnose perinatal depression and further explore its underlying mechanism. Considering the non-invasiveness and clinical convenience of electroencephalogram for mothers-to-be and fetuses, we collected the resting-state electroencephalogram of pregnant women at the 38th week of gestation. Subsequently, the difference in network topology between perinatal depression patients and healthy mothers-to-be was explored, with related spatial patterns being adopted to achieve the classification of pregnant women with perinatal depression from those healthy ones. We found that the perinatal depression patients had decreased brain network connectivity, which indexed impaired efficiency of information processing. By adopting the spatial patterns, the perinatal depression could be accurately recognized with an accuracy of 87.88%; meanwhile, the depression severity at the individual level was effectively predicted, as well. These findings consistently illustrated that the resting-state electroencephalogram network could be a reliable tool for investigating the depression state across pregnant women, and will further facilitate the clinical diagnosis of perinatal depression.

ABSTRACT

Anxiety and depression caused by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) negatively affect the mental health of patients. Emerging studies have demonstrated that the gut-brain axis (GBA) mediates IBD-induced mood disorders, but the underlying mechanisms of these findings remain unknown. Therefore, it's vital to conduct comprehensive research on the GBA in IBD. Multi-omics studies can provide an understanding of the pathological mechanisms of the GBA in the development of IBD, helping to uncover the mechanisms underlying the onset and progression of the disease. Thus, we analyzed the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of Dextran Sulfate Sodium Salt (DSS)-induced IBD mice using transcriptomics and metabolomics. We observed increased mRNA related to acetylcholine synthesis and secretion, along with decreased phosphatidylcholine (PC) levels in the PFC of DSS group compared to the control group. Fecal metagenomics also revealed abnormalities in the microbiome and lipid metabolism in the DSS group. Since both acetylcholine and PC are choline metabolites, we posited that the DSS group may experience choline deficiency and choline metabolism disorders. Subsequently, when we supplemented CDP-choline, IBD mice exhibited improvements, including decreased anxiety-like behaviors, reduced PC degradation, and increased acetylcholine synthesis in the PFC. In addition, administration of CDP-choline can restore imbalances in the gut microbiome and disruptions in lipid metabolism caused by DSS treatment. This study provides compelling evidence to suggest that choline metabolism plays a crucial role in the development and treatment of mood disorders in IBD. Choline and its metabolites appear to have a significant role in maintaining the stability of the GBA.

ABSTRACT

Insufficient bone formation and excessive bone resorption caused by estrogen deficiency are the major factors resulting in the incidence of postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP). The existing drugs usually fail to re-establish the osteoblast/osteoclast balance from both sides and generate side-effects owing to the lack of bone-targeting ability. Here, engineered cell-membrane-coated nanogels PNG@mR&C capable of scavenging receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) and responsively releasing therapeutic PTH 1-34 in the bone microenvironment are prepared from RANK and CXCR4 overexpressed bone mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) membrane-coated chitosan biopolymers. The CXCR4 on the coated-membranes confer bone-targeting ability, and abundant RANK effectively absorb RANKL to inhibit osteoclastogenesis. Meanwhile, the release of PTH 1-34 triggered by osteoclast-mediated acid microenvironment promote osteogenesis. In addition, the dose and frequency are greatly reduced due to the smart release property, prolonged circulation time, and bone-specific accumulation. Thus, PNG@mR&C exhibits satisfactory therapeutic effects in the ovariectomized (OVX) mouse model. This study provides a new paradigm re-establishing the bone metabolic homeostasis from multitargets and shows great promise for the treatment of PMOP.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Identifying risk factors for adverse pathologic features in low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) can provide valuable insights into the necessity of surgical or non-surgical treatment. This study aims to develop a nomogram for predicting the probability of adverse pathologic features in low-risk PTMC patients. METHODS: A total of 662 patients with low-risk PTMC who underwent thyroid surgery were retrospectively analyzed in Qilu Hospital of Shandong University from May 2019 to December 2021. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the risk factors for adverse pathologic features, and a nomogram was constructed based on these factors. RESULTS: Most PTMC patients with these adverse pathologic features had tumor diameters greater than 0.6 cm (p < 0.05). Other factors (age, gender, family history of thyroid cancer, history of autoimmune thyroiditis, and BRAFV600E mutation) had no significant correlation with adverse pathologic features (p > 0.05 each). The nomogram was drawn to provide a quantitative and convenient tool for predicting the risk of adverse pathologic features based on age, gender, family history of thyroid cancer, autoimmune thyroiditis, tumor size, and BRAFV600E mutation in low-risk PTMC patients. The areas under curves (AUC) were 0.645 (95% CI 0.580-0.702). Additionally, decision curve analysis (DCA) and calibration curves were used to evaluate the clinical benefits of this nomogram, presenting a high net benefit. CONCLUSION: Tumor size > 0.60 cm was identified as an independent risk factor for adverse pathologic features in low-risk PTMC patients. The nomogram had a high predictive value and consistency based on these factors.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to confirm whether premedication with pronase before endoscopy improves mucosal visualization and increases precancerous lesion and cancer lesion detection rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From June 2018 to April 2019, out-patients scheduled for endoscopy from 13 hospitals were screened to be randomly allocated in a 2:1 ratio to premedication with pronase (group A) and water (group B). The primary endpoint was mucosal visibility scores, and the secondary endpoint was precancerous and cancer lesion detection rates. This trial was registered at Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, and the registration number was ChiCTR1800016853. RESULTS: Group A showed significantly lower mucosal visibility scores (better mucosal visibility) of esophagus, stomach, and duodenum than group B, with all P -values <0.001. The overall cancer detection rates between group A and group B were 0.83 and 1.08%, and overall detection rates of precancerous and cancer lesion were 4.4 and 4.9%, both without significant difference ( P =1.000 and 0.824). In addition, the flushing volume (milliliter) of group A (10.52±23.41) was less than group B (36.30±52.11) ( P <0.001), and the flushing frequency of group A (0.46±1.01) was fewer than group B (1.62±2.12) ( P <0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Premedication with pronase could achieve better mucosal visibility and decrease flushing frequency and volume, but may not increase lesion detection rates.

BACKGROUND: The current study sought to investigate the correlation between vitamin D supplementation in pregnant women with vitamin D deficiency in early pregnancy and the incidence of prenatal depression prior to delivery. METHODS: This is a retrospective, single-center study that was conducted at a tertiary hospital in Chengdu, China. We conducted an analysis on pregnant women who were initially diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency at 12-14 weeks of gestation. After starting vitamin D supplementation at a dose of 800 IU daily from 14 weeks onwards, we measured both their vitamin D concentration and depression scores again during median gestational week 39 prior to delivery. RESULTS: The study cohort comprised 1365 women who had been diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency at 12-14 weeks of gestation between November 1st, 2021 to November 1st, 2022. 537 pairs were matched based on a propensity score to control for other confounding factors. After propensity score matching, the baseline vitamin D levels were made consistent between the groups (P = 0.512). The incidence of depression in patients in vitamin D deficiency group following vitamin D supplementation was significantly higher than insufficiency group and reached statistical significance (P < 0.001). Additionally, we observed that serum 25-(OH) D concentration achieving insufficiency status after supplementation was 59.12%. CONCLUSION: Our study indicates that daily supplementation of 800IU of vitamin D can improve the depressive symptoms of individuals who are vitamin D deficiency during early pregnancy but achieve vitamin D insufficiency after supplementation during prenatal period.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The current literature shows a strong relationship between retinal neuronal and vascular alterations in dementia. The purpose of the study was to use NFN+ deep learning models to analyze retinal vessel characteristics for cognitive impairment (CI) recognition. METHODS: We included 908 participants from a community-based cohort followed for over 15 years (the prospective KaiLuan Study) who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fundus photography between 2021 and 2022. The cohort consisted of both cognitively healthy individuals (N = 417) and those with cognitive impairment (N = 491). We employed the NFN+ deep learning framework for retinal vessel segmentation and measurement. Associations between Retinal microvascular parameters (RMPs: central retinal arteriolar / venular equivalents, arteriole to venular ratio, fractal dimension) and CI were assessed by Pearson correlation. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The correlation between the CI and RMPs were explored, then the correlation coefficients between CI and RMPs were analyzed. Random Forest nonlinear classification model was used to predict whether one having cognitive decline or not. The assessment criterion was the AUC value derived from the working characteristic curve. RESULTS: The fractal dimension (FD) and global vein width were significantly correlated with the CI (P < 0.05). Age (0.193), BMI (0.154), global vein width (0.106), retinal vessel FD (0.099), and CRAE (0.098) were the variables in this model that were ranked in order of feature importance. The AUC values of the model were 0.799. CONCLUSIONS: Establishment of a predictive model based on the extraction of vascular features from fundus images has a high recognizability and predictive power for cognitive function and can be used as a screening method for CI.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to compare retinal vascular parameters and density in patients with moyamoya disease using the optical coherence tomography angiography. METHODS: This clinical trial totally enrolls 78 eyes from 39 participants, and all these patients with moyamoya disease (N = 13) are set as experimental group and participants with health who matched with age and gender are considered as the control group (N = 26). Then all these participants receive optical coherence tomography angiography detection. Participants' general data are collected and analyzed. Skeleton density (SD) value, vessel density (VD) value, fractal dimension (FD) value, vessel diameter index (VDI) value, foveal avascular zone (FAZ) value are analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 39 participants are included in this study. The SD value in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in control group (0.175 [0.166, 0.181] vs. 0.184 [0.175, 0.188], p = 0.017). Similarly, the VD value in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in the control group (0.333 [0.320, 0.350] vs. 0.354 [0.337, 0.364], p = 0.024). Additionally, the FD value in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in the control group (2.088 [2.083, 2.094] vs. 2.096 [2.090, 2.101], p = 0.022). As for the VDI and FAZ, VDI and FAZ values in the experimental group were lower than those in the control group, there was no significant difference in VDI and FAZ values between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our study, using non-invasive and rapid OCTA imaging, confirmed decreased retinal vascular parameters and density in patients with moyamoya disease.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The therapeutic effect of probiotics for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) was controversial. This study aims to evaluate the short-term efficacy of Bifidobacterium quadruple viable tablet in patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS and explore factors associated with response to probiotics. METHODS: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial was performed in 15 hospitals. A total of 290 patients who fulfilled the eligibility criteria were assigned to the probiotics or placebo group randomly with a ratio of 1:1 for a 4-week treatment and a 2-week follow-up. The primary outcome was the response rate. It was regarded as the proportion of patients with composite responses of improvement in both abdominal pain and diarrhea simultaneously. RESULTS: After 4-week continuous administration, the response rates of the probiotics and the placebo were 67.59% and 36.55%, respectively ( P < 0.001). In the probiotics, those with higher abdominal pain scores (2.674 [1.139-6.279]) were more likely to respond, but responders in placebo had lower Hamilton Depression Scale score (0.162 [0.060-0.439]), lower Hamilton Anxiety Scale score (0.335 [0.148-0.755]), and higher degree of bloating (2.718 [1.217-6.074]). Although the diversity of the microbiota was not significantly changed by probiotics, the abundance of bacteria producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including Butyricimonas ( P = 0.048), Pseudobutyrivibrio ( P = 0.005), Barnesiella ( P = 0.020), and Sutterella ( P = 0.020), and the concentration of SCFAs including butyric acid ( P = 0.010), valeric acid ( P = 0.019), and caproic acid ( P = 0.046) in feces increased. DISCUSSION: A Bifidobacterium quadruple viable tablet had a significant short-term efficacy for the treatment of diarrhea-predominant IBS and was more effective in patients with higher abdominal pain scores. This kind of probiotics could improve the abundance of several bacteria producing SCFAs and the concentration of fecal SCFAs compared with placebos.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the incremental diagnostic value of radiomics signature of pericoronary adipose tissue (PCAT) in addition to the coronary artery stenosis and plaque characters for detecting hemodynamic significant coronary artery disease (CAD) based on coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). METHODS: In a multicenter trial of 262 patients, CCTA and invasive coronary angiography were performed, with fractional flow reserve (FFR) in 306 vessels. A total of 13 conventional quantitative characteristics including plaque characteristics (N = 10) and epicardial adipose tissue characteristics (N = 3) were obtained. A total of 106 radiomics features depicting the phenotype of the PCAT surrounding the lesion were calculated. All data were randomly split into a training dataset (75%) and a testing dataset (25%). Then three models (including the conventional model, the PCAT radiomics model, and the combined model) were established in the training dataset using multivariate logistic regression algorithm based on the conventional quantitative features and the PCAT radiomics features after dimension reduction. RESULTS: A total of 124/306 vessels showed functional ischemia (FFR ≤ 0.80). The radiomics model performed better in discriminating ischemia from non-ischemia than the conventional model in both training (area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC): 0.770 vs 0.732, p < 0.05) and testing datasets (AUC: 0.740 vs 0.696, p < 0.05). The combined model showed significantly better discrimination than the conventional model in both training (AUC: 0.810 vs 0.732, p < 0.05) and testing datasets (AUC: 0.809 vs 0.696, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The PCAT radiomics model showed good performance in predicting myocardial ischemia. Addition of PCAT radiomics to lesion quantitative characteristics improves the predictive power of functionally relevant CAD. KEY POINTS: • Based on the plaque characteristics and EAT characteristics, the conventional model showed poor performance in predicting myocardial ischemia. • The PCAT radiomics model showed good prospect in predicting myocardial ischemia. • When combining the radiomics signature with the conventional quantitative features (including plaque features and EAT features), it showed significantly better performance in predicting myocardial ischemia.

ABSTRACT

AIM: The aim of this study was to explore the experience and perceptions of patients with Crohn's disease in China. METHODS: Data mining was used to investigate posts in Crohn's disease online medical communities. The data were collected through the crawler code, and latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) and grounded theory were used to mine the theme features after data cleaning. RESULTS: In analyzing the topic characteristics of online posts, LDA divided 6757 posts into 15 topics on four aspects: seeking disease information, making decisions on medication use, psychological burden, and communicating about diet and nutrition. CONCLUSION: Overall, social media is patient-centric and helps us better understand the experiences and perceptions of patients. This study can help medical staff predict the thoughts and concerns of Crohn's disease patients during the treatment process, facilitate doctor-patient communication, and assist in the formulation of medical policies.

PURPOSE: Gut microbiota dysbiosis, a core pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), is closely related to immunological and metabolic functions. Gut microbiota-based therapeutics have been recently explored in several studies. Bifico is a probiotic cocktail widely used in gastrointestinal disorders which relate to the imbalance of gut microbiota. However, the efficacy and potential mechanisms of Bifico treatment in IBS remains incompletely understood. METHODS: Adopting a wrap restraint stress (WRS) -induced IBS mice model. Protective effect of Bifico in IBS mice was examined through abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR) scores. 16S rDNA, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) and western blot assays were performed to analyze alterations of gut microbiota, microbiome metabolites and inflammatory cytokines, respectively. RESULTS: Bifico could decrease intestinal visceral hypersensitivity. Although gut microbiota diversity did not increase, composition of gut microbiota was changed after treatment of Bifico, which were characterized by an increase of Proteobacteria phylum and Actinobacteria phylum, Muribaculum genus, Bifidobacterium genus and a decrease of Parabacteroides genus, Sutterella genus and Lactobacillus genus. Moreover, Bifico elevated the concentration of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and reduced protein levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). From further Spearman's correlation analysis, Bifidobacterium genus were positively correlated with SCFAs including propionate, butyrate, valerate and negatively correlated with IL-6 and TNF-α. CONCLUSION: Bifico could alleviate symptoms of IBS mice through regulation of the gut microbiota, elevating production of SCFAs and reducing the colonic inflammatory response.

ABSTRACT

Spinal cord injury (SCI) often causes severe neurological dysfunction, and facilitating neurite elongation is particularly important in its treatment. Astrocytes (AS) play an important role in the central nervous system (CNS), and their high plasticity and versatility provide a feasible entry point for relevant research. Our purpose was to explore whether extracellular vesicles (EVs) from astrocytes (AS-EVs) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-preactivated astrocytes (LPAS-EVs) facilitate neurite elongation, to explore the underlying mechanism, and to verify whether these EVs promote locomotor recovery in rats. We used LPS to preactivate astrocytes and cocultured them with PC12 cells to observe neurite changes, then extracted and identified AS-EVs and LPAS-EVs and the role and mechanism of these EVs in facilitating neurite elongation was examined in vivo and vitro. We demonstrated that AS-EVs and LPAS-EVs facilitated the elongation of neurites and the recovery of rats with SCI. LPAS-EVs had a stronger effect than AS-EVs, by activating the Hippo pathway, promoting monopole spindle binding protein 1 (MOB1) expression, and reducing Yes-associated protein (YAP) levels. The data also suggest a feedback regulation between MOB1 and p-YAP/YAP. In sum, AS-EVs and LPAS-EVs can play an active role in facilitating neurite elongation by activating the Hippo pathway. These findings provide a new strategy for treating SCI and other CNS-related injuries.

ABSTRACT

AIM: High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive treatment of adenomyosis. Uterine rupture during pregnancy is a rare adverse event after HIFU treatment, because HIFU treatment results in tissue coagulative necrosis. METHODS: We reported a case of uterine rupture in a 34-year-old woman. The woman had HIFU treatment for adenomyosis eight months before unplanned pregnancy. She was closely monitored during the pregnancy and the antenatal course was uneventful. At the gestational age of 38 weeks and 2 days, an emergency lower segment cesarean section was performed because of inexplainable abdominal pain. After delivery of the fetus, a 2 × 2 cm serous membrane rupture was observed in the HIFU treatment area. CONCLUSION: Uterine rupture during pregnancy after HIFU is a rare adverse event, however, attention is required during the whole pregnancy in case of unexpected uterine rupture.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To explore the perspectives, experience, and concerns of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in China. METHODS: We used data mining to investigate posts shared in Baidu Tieba concerned with IBS; we collected the data through the crawler code, and mined the cleaned data's themes based on Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) and the Grounded theory. RESULTS: We found 5746 network posts related to IBS. LDA analysis generated 20 topics, and grounded theory analysis established eight topics. Combining the two methods, we finally arranged the topics according to five concepts: difficulty in obtaining disease information; serious psychosocial problems; dissatisfied with the treatment; lack of social support; and low quality of life. CONCLUSION: Social media research improved patient-centric understanding of patients' experiences and perceptions. Our study may facilitate doctor-patient communication and assist in the formulation of medical policies.

ABSTRACT

Fatty acid oxidation (FAO) has been proven to be an accomplice in tumor progression. Carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1C (CPT1C), a rate-limiting enzyme in FAO, mainly functions to catalyze fatty acid carnitinylation and guarantee subsequent entry into the mitochondria for FAO in colorectal cancer (CRC). Gene expression data and clinical information extracted from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database show significantly higher expression of CPT1C in patients with metastatic CRC ( P=0.005). Moreover, overexpression of CPT1C is correlated with worse relapse-free survival in CRC (HR 2.1, P=0.0006), while no statistical significance is indicated for CPT1A and CPT1B. Further experiments demonstrate that downregulation of CPT1C expression leads to a decrease in the FAO rate, suppression of cell proliferation, cell cycle arrest and repression of cell migration in CRC, whereas opposite results are obtained when CPT1C is overexpressed. Furthermore, an FAO inhibitor almost completely reverses the enhanced cell proliferation and migration induced by CPT1C overexpression. In addition, analysis of TCGA data illustrates a positive association between CPT1C expression and HIF1α level, suggesting that CPT1C is a transcriptional target of HIF1α. In conclusion, CPT1C overexpression indicates poor relapse-free survival of patients with CRC, and CPT1C is transcriptionally activated by HIF1α, thereby promoting the proliferation and migration of CRC cells.

Background Retrospective or single-center prospective studies with relatively small samples have shown that contrast-enhanced US (CEUS) can improve the diagnostic accuracy of percutaneous biopsy, but larger prospective studies are lacking. Purpose To assess the diagnostic performance of CEUS-guided biopsy (CEUS-GB) of focal liver lesions (FLLs) compared with US-guided biopsy (US-GB) in a prospective multicenter study. Materials and Methods In this randomized controlled study conducted in nine hospitals in China between March 2016 and August 2019, adult participants with FLLs detected with US, CT, or MRI and planned for percutaneous biopsy were randomly assigned to undergo either US-GB or CEUS-GB. Lesions diagnosed as malignant at histopathologic analysis were considered true-positive findings. Benign or indeterminate lesions required further confirmation with either repeat biopsy or clinical follow-up at 6 months or later. The primary endpoint was the diagnostic accuracy rate, and comparison between groups was made using the χ2 test. Results In this study, 2056 participants (1297 men, 759 women; mean age, 58 years ± 11 [SD]) were analyzed: 1030 underwent biopsy with US guidance and 1026 underwent biopsy with CEUS guidance. The overall diagnostic accuracy rate of CEUS-GB was 96% (983 of 1026) versus 93% (953 of 1030) for US-GB (P = .002), CEUS-GB enabled correct identification in 96% of participants (983 of 1026) compared with 92% (953 of 1030) with US-GB (P = .002). The negative predictive value (NPV) for both biopsy methods was moderate but significantly higher for CEUS-GB than for US-GB (74% vs 57%, P = .001). The difference was remarkable for lesions smaller than 2.0 cm, with CEUS-GB showing higher diagnostic accuracy (96% vs 88%, P = .004) and sensitivity (95% vs 87%, P = .007) than US-GB. Among lesions smaller than 2.0 cm, the accuracy of CEUS-GB and US-GB for detection of hepatocellular carcinoma was 93% and 80%, respectively (P = .008), while it was comparable for liver metastases (98% vs 95%, P = .63). Conclusion Contrast-enhanced US-guided biopsy of focal liver lesions is an effective and safe procedure with a higher diagnostic accuracy than US-guided biopsy, especially for lesions smaller than 2.0 cm and for hepatocellular carcinoma diagnosis. ABSTRACT

Multifunctional metasurfaces, where multiple functions can be integrated into a piece of metasurface, are preferably desired for compact systems with higher integration and subwavelength footprint. Particularly, metasurfaces for simultaneous nanoprinting and holography are one of the promising directions of development image display and information hiding in meta-devices. Here, inspired by tri-redundancy, a new, to the best of our knowledge, approach is proposed for generating a nanoprinting image in the near field and holographic image in the far field simultaneously, which can solve the extremum-mapping problem existing in single-sized scheme without increasing the complexity of the nanostructures. The tri-redundancy of image recognition, hologram designing and intensity modulation introduce an extra degree of freedom, which helps to find a balance between the two types of meta-images generated by utilizing the simulated annealing algorithm. A multifunctional metasurface composed of single-sized silver nanobricks with in-plane orientation has been fabricated to demonstrate the feasibility of encoding a binary image in the near field while reconstructing a 16-steps holographic image without twin-image in the far field. This multifunctional metasurface has flexible working modes, broadband working window and large robustness for fabrication errors, and it provides a simple design scheme for multifunctional integration. We expect it can empower advanced research and applications in high-end optical anticounterfeiting, image hiding and so on.
