ABSTRACT

Spraying urine on vertical objects by raising the tail is a commonly observed functional behavior for chemical communication in Felidae species, including domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus). The sprayed urine is recognized as a chemical signal for territorial ownership of their habitats. Previous studies reported that sprayed urine emits a more pungent odor than urine excreted from a squatting position. However, little is known about how sprayed urine acts as a strong scent mark in the environment. Here, we showed that sprayed urine originates only from bladder urine without any secretions, such as anal sac secretions, but it can effectively emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when smeared on vertical objects due to its strong adhesion. Chemical profiles of VOCs and odor qualities were similar between fresh sprayed urine and bladder urine sampled immediately after spraying from the same individuals. Meanwhile, feline-specific proteinuria arising from excretion of a carboxylesterase that produces a precursor of cat-specific odorants resulted in reduced surface tension of the urine and increased adhesion to vertical surfaces, which kept sprayed urine on the surfaces and led to the emission of large amounts of VOCs. In conclusion, proteinuria contributes to the emission of a strong odor through its enhanced adhesion to vertical objects without other secretions containing malodorous substances. These findings improve our understanding of the mechanism of scent marking via the spraying of urine for chemical communication in cats.

ABSTRACT

Although choline requirements are unknown, enhanced postruminal supply may decrease liver triacylglycerol (TAG) storage and increase flux through the methionine cycle, helping cows during a negative energy balance (NEB). The objective was to investigate effects of postruminal choline supply during NEB on hepatic activity of betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase (BHMT), methionine synthase (MTR), methionine adenosyltransferase, transcription of enzymes, and metabolite concentrations in the methionine cycle. Ten primiparous rumen-cannulated Holstein cows (158 ± 24 d postpartum) were used in a replicated 5 × 5 Latin square design with 4-d treatment periods and 10 d of recovery (14 d/period). Treatments were unrestricted intake with abomasal infusion of water (A0), restricted intake (R; 60% of net energy for lactation requirements to induce NEB) with abomasal infusion of water (R0) or R plus abomasal infusion of 6.25, 12.5, or 25 g/d of choline ion. Liver tissue was collected on d 5 after the infusions ended, blood on d 1 to 5, and milk on d 1 to 4. Statistical contrasts were A0 versus R0 (CONT1) and tests of linear (L), quadratic (Q), and cubic (C) effects of choline dose. Plasma choline increased with R (CONT1) and choline (L). Although R decreased milk yield (CONT1), choline increased milk yield and liver phosphatidylcholine (PC), but decreased TAG (L). No differences were observed in plasma PC or very-low-density lipoprotein concentrations with R or choline. Activity and mRNA abundance of BHMT were greater with R (CONT1) and increased with choline (L). Although activity of MTR was lower with R (CONT1), it tended to increase with choline (L). No effect of R was detected for activity of methionine adenosyltransferase, but it changed cubically across dose of choline. Those responses were associated with linear increases in the concentrations of liver tissue (+13%) and plasma methionine concentrations. The mRNA abundance of CPT1A, SLC22A5, APOA5, and APOB, genes associated with fatty acid oxidation and lipoprotein metabolism, was upregulated by choline (Q). Overall, enhanced supply of choline during NEB increases hepatic activity of BHMT and MTR to regenerate methionine and PC, partly to help clear TAG. The relevance of these effects during the periparturient period merits further research.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The health effects of biological aerosols on the respiratory system are unclear. The purpose of this study was to clarify the association of airborne particle, protein, and endotoxin with emergency department visits for asthma in Kyoto City, Japan. METHODS: We collected data on emergency department visits at a hospital in Kyoto from September 2014 to May 2016. Fine (aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 µm) and coarse (≥ 2.5 µm) particles were collected in Kyoto, and protein and endotoxin levels were analyzed. The association of the levels of particles, protein, endotoxin, and meteorological factors (temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and air pressure) with emergency department visits for asthma was estimated. RESULTS: There were 1 to 15 emergency department visits for asthma per week, and the numbers of visits increased in the autumn and spring, namely many weeks in September, October, and April. Weekly concentration of protein in fine particles was markedly higher than that in coarse particles, and protein concentration in fine particles was high in spring months. Weekly endotoxin concentrations in fine and coarse particles were high in autumn months, including September 2014 and 2015. Even after adjusting for meteorological factors, the concentrations of coarse particles and endotoxin in both particles were significant factors on emergency department visits for asthma. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that atmospheric coarse particles and endotoxin are significantly associated with an increased risk of asthma exacerbation.

ABSTRACT

A 40-year-old man presented to our hospital with fever and slight palpitation. The echocardiogram revealed bicuspid aortic valve, massive aortic regurgitation, and aneurysm of Valsalva sinus. Operative findings showed an aortic root pseudoaneurysm originating just below the avulsion of the right to left commissure. The orifice was closed with a part of a woven vascular graft, and the aortic valve was replaced with a mechanical valve. There was no sign of marked inflammation, although pathophysiologic findings indicated infective endocarditis. His postoperative course was uneventful.

ABSTRACT

This study used a decompression drying instrument to investigate the effects of a drying treatment on the physical properties of solid foods. Commercial tofu was used as a model food and was treated at different temperature and pressure conditions in a drying chamber. Overall, high temperatures resulted in better drying. Additionally, pressure in the chamber influenced the drying conditions of samples. Differences in physical properties, such as food texture, shrinkage, and color were observed among some samples, even with similar moisture content. This was caused by differences in moisture distribution in the food, which seems to have manifested as a thin, dried film on the surfaces of samples. It caused inefficient drying and changes in physical properties. Control of the drying conditions (i.e. pressure and heat supply) has relations with not only physical properties, but also the drying efficiency of solid foods.

ABSTRACT

The goal of cholesteatoma surgery is total removal of the cholesteatoma matrix and prevention of recurrence. Preservation of soft tissue in the attic is reported to improve post-operative middle ear aeration, and thus prevents recurrence. However, the histology and nature of the preserved tissue have rarely been reported. The aim of this study is to clarify the histology of the preserved soft tissue in cholesteatoma surgery, and to show its relationship to the clinical course. Surgical specimens were obtained from ten patients with pars flaccida-type cholesteatoma. In these patients, cholesteatoma occupied the attic and the mastoid cavity. The cholesteatoma was removed so as not to expose the bone in the attic. After the removal of the lesions, soft tissue was harvested from the floor of the attic, using cupped forceps. The specimens were fixed with 10 % formalin, and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. The patients were followed-up for 8 years after the surgery. No patients showed post-operative inner ear disturbance or facial nerve palsy. In one patient, residual lesion was found during the revision surgery. The area of residual lesion was not explored during the first operation. Two other patients showed recurrent cholesteatoma in the pars tensa; one of these patients had accompanying otorrhea. The other seven patients showed no residual or recurrent cholesteatoma 8 years after the surgery. The histological examination showed that the harvested tissue was mainly composed of collagen fiber and fibroblasts. Ciliary epithelial cells were found in one patient. In three patients, cysts of mucosal remnants (glandular cysts), were embedded in the connective tissue. Two of these three patients experienced recurrent cholesteatoma, while the other seven patients were without recurrence at follow-up. Preservation of soft tissue behind the cholesteatoma matrix is a safe technique if the surgical field is fully visible. In most cases, the preserved tissue was fibrous connective tissue and lacked the characteristics of mucosa. The glandular cysts in the preserved soft tissue seem to be related to the recurrence of cholesteatoma.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: A retrospective examination was conducted to identify risk factors for in-hospital mortality of elderly patients (65 years or older) treated with the beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combination antibiotic, ampicillin/sulbactam (ABPC/SBT). Methods: Clinical data from 96 patients who were hospitalized with infectious diseases and treated with ABPC/SBT (9 g/day or 12 g/day) were analyzed. Risk factors examined included demographic and clinical laboratory parameters. Parameter values prior to treatment and changes after treatment were compared between survivors and non-survivors. Results: The study patients had an average age of 81.9±8.4 years (±SD) and body mass index (BMI) of 19.9±4.2 kg/m2. They were characterized by anemia (low hemoglobin and hematocrit levels), inflammation (high leukocyte count, neutrophil count, C-reactive protein level, and body temperature), and hepatic and renal dysfunction (high aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and blood urea nitrogen levels). The BMI of non-survivors, 16.2±2.9 kg/m2, was lower than that of survivors, 20.4±4.1 kg/m2. In addition, the hematological parameters deteriorated more remarkably, inflammation markers were not altered (or the decrease was marginal), and hepatic function was not improved, in non-survivors. Conclusions: A lower BMI value is a risk factor for in-hospital mortality of elderly patients treated with ABPC/SBT.

ABSTRACT

A 41-year-old man underwent total arch replacement and aorto-bifemoral bypass owing to type A acute aortic dissection complicated by ischemia of both lower extremities. Just after the operation, he developed myonephropathic metabolic syndrome due to severe ischemia of the right leg, and hemodiafiltration was performed. However, the serum potassium was elevated to an uncontrollable level. Ligation of the right femoral artery and the right branch of the bypass graft was performed one hour after the transfer to intensive care unit (ICU), and the serum potassium dropped to a normal level. He underwent amputation of the right lower limb above the knee on the 13th postoperative day, and was discharged after long-term rehabilitation.

ABSTRACT

Through a copper double bipolar magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) electrode (MHDE) producing twice the amounts of ionic vacancies than a conventional single MHDE, the molar excess heat of the pair annihilation of ionic vacancies, 702 kJ mol-1 at 10 T on average was obtained in a copper redox reaction. It was about twice as large as that of a single MHDE, 387 kJ mol-1 at the same magnetic field. This result strongly suggests that a multi-channel bipolar MHDE will produce much greater excess heat. To conserve the linear momentum and electric charge during electron transfer in an electrode reaction, ionic vacancies are created, storing the solvation energy in the polarized core of the order of 0.1 nm, and the pair annihilation of the vacancies with opposite charges liberates the energy as excess heat. The promoted excess heat by the double bipolar MHDE with a diffuser at 10 T was 710 ± 144 kJ mol-1, whereas as mentioned above, 702 ± 426 kJ mol-1 was obtained by the same electrode without such a diffuser. From the theoretical excess heat of 1140 kJ mol-1, the collision efficiencies in pair annihilation were 0.623 ± 0.126 and 0.616 ± 0.374, respectively. From these results, the reproducibility of the thermal measurement was experimentally validated. At the same time, it was concluded that at magnetic fields beyond 10 T, the concentration of ionic vacancy and the collision efficiency take constant uppermost values.

ABSTRACT

The excessive intake of sodium (Na) and insufficient intake of potassium (K) are major concerns in the prevention of hypertension. Using low-Na/K seasonings (reducing 25% of the NaCl and adding K salt) may improve the dietary Na/K ratio and help prevent hypertension. To devise an intervention study using low-Na/K seasonings at a company cafeteria, we calculated the Na and K contents of the meals served at the cafeteria and estimated changes in the intakes when suitable low-Na/K seasonings were used. We also considered using milk as a good source of K. We used an ingredient list of a company cafeteria and calculated Na and K contents in each dish. The average amounts of NaCl and K per use were 5.04 g and 718 mg, respectively. Seasonings contributed 70.9% of the NaCl. With the use of low-Na/K seasonings, an estimated reduction in NaCl of 0.8 g/day and an estimated increase in K of 308 mg/day was achieved. With an additional serving (200 mL) of milk, NaCl was reduced by 0.57 g/day and K was increased by 610 mg/day, with an overall decrease in the dietary Na/K ratio from 3.20 to 2.40. The use of low-Na/K seasonings and dairy may improve the dietary Na/K ratio among cafeteria users and help prevent hypertension.

ABSTRACT

Waveguide integrated MSM (metal-semiconductor-metal) Germanium (Ge) photodetectors (PDs) with a SiGe capping layer were exploited for silicon photonics integration. Under optimized epitaxial growth conditions, the capping layer passivated the Ge surface, resulting in sufficiently low dark current of the PDs. In addition, the PDs exhibited a narrower distribution of the dark current than PDs with a Si capping layer, probably due to the lower surface leakage current. Low-noise differential receivers with uniform MSM Ge PDs exhibiting 10 Gbps data transmission were realized.

ABSTRACT

A 70-year-old male underwent a transthoracic echocardiography as a screening test for hypertension and an unruptured aneurysm was detected in the right sinus of Valsalva. The right sinus of Valsalva aneurysm obstructed the right ventricle outflow tract but he did not have any symptoms. The sinus of Valsalva aneurysm was treated successfully by a patch closure with a bovine pericardial patch.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to describe the technique and clinical outcomes of using a palatal mucoperiosteal flap for oro-nasal fistula closure following resection of maxillary sinus cancer. METHODS: The study was conducted with the permission of the internal review board of the Japanese Red Cross Wakayama Medical Center. Five consecutive cases from 2016 to 2020 of surgically treated maxillary sinus cancer in which the oro-nasal fistulas were closed using a palatal mucoperiosteal flap were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Following tumor resection, the oro-nasal fistula was closed using a palatal mucoperiosteal flap. Complete separation of the oral and nasal cavities was achieved in four patients. Oral intake was resumed within two weeks in four patients. All the patients were able to eat foods similar to those in the preoperative period. Their postoperative speech function was excellent, with no difficulty in communicating with others. CONCLUSION: In the selected cases of maxillary sinus cancer, preservation of the palatal mucosa and closure of an oro-nasal fistula using a palatal mucoperiosteal flap was possible with reasonable outcomes for swallowing and speech functions. The use of this local flap is recommended as a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed especially in patients with limited physiological reserves which preclude free flap reconstruction.

ABSTRACT

One of the most serious issues in information industries is the bandwidth bottleneck in inter-chip interconnects. We propose a photonics-electronics convergence system to solve this issue. We fabricated a high density optical interposer to demonstrate the feasibility of the system by using silicon photonics integrated with an arrayed laser diode, an optical splitter, silicon optical modulators, germanium photodetectors, and silicon optical waveguides on a single silicon substrate. Error-free data transmission at 12.5 Gbps and a transmission density of 6.6 Tbps/cm2 were achieved with the optical interposer. We believe this technology will solve the bandwidth bottleneck problem in the future.

ABSTRACT

Engineers are currently facing some technical issues in support of the exponential performance growths in information industries. One of the most serious issues is a bottleneck of inter-chip interconnects. We propose a new "Photonics-Electronics Convergence System" concept. High density optical interconnects integrated with a 13-channel arrayed laser diode, silicon optical modulators, germanium photodetectors, and silicon optical waveguides on single silicon substrate were demonstrated for the first time using this system. A 5-Gbps error free data transmission and a 3.5-Tbps/cm(2) transmission density were achieved. We believe that this technology will solve the bandwidth bottleneck problem among LSI chips in the future.

ABSTRACT

A starch ingredient with antioxidative activity, as measured by the DPPH method, was produced by baking corn starch with an organic acid; it has been named ANOX sugar (antioxidative sugar). The baking temperature and time were fixed at 170 °C and 60 min, and the organic acid used was selected from preliminary trials of various kinds of acid. The phytic acid ANOX sugar preparation showed the highest antioxidative activity, but the color of the preparation was almost black; we therefore selected L-tartaric acid which had the second highest antioxidative activity. The antioxidative activity of the L-tartaric acid ANOX sugar preparation was stable against temperature, light, and enzyme treatments (α-amylase and glucoamylase). However, the activity was not stable against variations in water content and pH value. The antioxidative activity of ANOX sugar was stabilized by treating with boiled water or nitrogen gas, or by pH adjustment.

ABSTRACT

Radiation-induced sarcoma usually develops after an interval of more than 10 years from the completion of radiation therapy to the diagnosis of secondary sarcoma. However, the theory of radiation-induced transformation does not rule out postirradiation sarcomas with a short latency period. We experienced the case of a patient with postirradiation leiomyosarcoma of the tongue, which occurred 19 months after he had received chemoradiotherapy. Besides the short latency period, a pseudotumor stage developed between the time of radiation exposure and the development of leiomyosarcoma. In this article, we also describe an immunohistochemical approach to diagnose leiomyosarcoma and the efficacy of a gemcitabine and docetaxel regimen.

OBJECTIVES: The incidence of severe mucosal damage due to low nutritional status is high in patients receiving concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) for head and neck cancer. Objective assessments do not exist for discharge criteria after completion of CCRT. Although the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) is an objective indicator of postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing cancer surgery, the prognostic impact of the PNI in patients with head and neck cancer receiving CCRT is unexplored. We investigated whether the PNI could be an objective criterion for nutritional status and a discharge criterion after completion of CCRT. METHODS: We assessed the medical records of 23 patients with head and neck cancer who received triweekly cisplatin +radiotherapy (2 Gy ×35 fractions). We evaluated whether the PNI could be a useful evaluation indicator in patients with head and neck cancer receiving CCRT and determined the cut-off PNI value by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis as a criterion for hospital discharge. RESULTS: The PNI pre-treatment and post-treatment values were 51.0 and 38.0, respectively (p<0.05). The median length of hospitalisation after therapy was 5 days in patients with grades 1 and 2 and 10 days in patients with grade 3 oral and pharyngeal mucositis (p<0.05). The optimal cut-off PNI value as a criterion for hospital discharge was found to be 40.4 (grades 1 and 2 mucositis) and 38.6 (grade 3 mucositis) by the ROC analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The PNI is a simple, objective and temporal indicator which is useful in assessing the nutritional status of patients with head and neck cancer. The PNI could be used as an objective indicator to determine the time of discharge after CCRT completion.

Seventy-five individually fed barrows averaging 35 kg were used in a series of three experiments for 6-week growth assays (25 barrows each) to determine the effects of l-tryptophan (Trp) supplementation on growth performance and to establish the lower limits of dietary crude protein (CP) levels. Corn and soybean meal (SBM)-based diets containing 9% (Experiment 1), 10% (Experiment 2), and 11% CP (Experiment 3) fortified with deficient essential amino acids (AAs) except Trp were used as basal diets for each experiment. The experimental diets were supplemented with 0.00%, 0.02%, 0.04%, or 0.06% Trp. A 16% CP corn-SBM-based diet was set as a positive control in each experiment, and feed and water were provided ad libitum. Average daily gain and gain-to-feed ratio improved quadratically (P < 0.05) as supplemented Trp increased in the 9% and 10% CP group, although these positive effects were not observed in the 11% CP group. Because the maximum performance parameters in 9%, 10%, and 11% CP groups were not different from that of the 16% CP positive control group, the marginally reduced level of dietary CP without growth performance being affected appears to be around 9% at most. A potential reduction of nitrogen intake was clearly indicated.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to compare the degree of enlargement of the spinal canal between two methods of cervical laminoplasty (open-door laminoplasty and double-door laminoplasty) and to determine their appropriate surgical indications based on the results. Tension-band laminoplasty (TBL, one method of open-door type) was performed in 33 patients and double-door laminoplasty (DDL) in 20 patients. The operation level ranged from C2 to C7 in all patients. The width of the spinal canal and the inclination angle of the lamina at the C5 and C6 levels were measured using a computer software program (Image J) and pre- and postoperative CT films. Concerning the degree of enlargement of the spinal canal, the mean expansion ratio at the C5 level was 148.9% in TBL and 148.2% in DDL, and there was no significant difference between them. However, at the C6 level, it was 159.0% in TBL and 140.3% in DDL, which was significantly larger in TBL than DDL (p < 0.05). The increase of inclination angle of the lamina was 11.0° in TBL and 19.0° in DDL at the C5 level, and 9.2° in TBL and 19.3° in DDL at the C6 level. At both the C5 and C6 levels, it was significantly larger in DDL than TBL (p < 0.0001). In conclusion, the appropriate surgical indications of TBL were considered to be (1) cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) combined with hemilateral radiculopathy, (2) severe prominence of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL), and (3) patients with tiny spinous processes who cannot undergo DDL. Those of DDL were considered to be (1) usual CSM, (2) small and slight prominence of OPLL, (3) CSM combined with bilateral radiculopathy, and (4) cervical canal stenosis combined with instability necessitating posterior spinal instrumentation surgery.
