ABSTRACT

Despite continuing advances in the development of effective new therapies, including immunotherapies, the prognosis of pancreatic cancer remains extremely poor. Gap junction proteins have become attractive targets for potential cancer therapy. However, the role of gap junction beta-4 (GJB4) protein remains unexplored in pancreatic cancer. Through bioinformatic analyses we discovered pancreatic cancer tissues showed higher levels of GJB4 transcripts compared to normal pancreatic tissues and this had a negative effect on overall survival in patients that had pancreatic cancer. The high expression of nuclear GJB4 was identified as a negative prognostic factor in such patients. Knockdown of GJB4 in cultured pancreatic cancer cells resulted in G0/G1 arrest followed by decreased cell proliferation and suppression of metastatic potential. The overexpression of GJB4 accelerated cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in a SUIT-2 cell line, whereas MET inhibitor canceled the acceleration. GJB4 suppression with siRNA significantly inhibited tumor growth in a mouse xenograft model. Mechanistically, suppression of GJB4 inhibited MET-AKT activities. Such data suggest that targeting the GJB4-MET axis could represent a promising new therapeutic strategy for pancreatic cancer.

ABSTRACT

Overexpression of inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) proteins is associated with poor prognosis. In multiple myeloma (MM), the IAP inhibitors (IAPi), LCL161, have been evaluated in preclinical and clinical settings but are not fully effective. Among IAPs, XIAP has the strongest anti-apoptotic function with direct binding activity to caspases and cIAP1 and cIAP2 are positive regulator of NF-κB signaling. Prior IAPi such as LCL161 has high affinity to cIAP1 and cIAP2 resulting in inferior inhibiting activity against XIAP. A novel dimeric IAPi, AZD5582 (C58H78N8O8), have high binding potency to XIAP with EC50 dose of 15 nM, enabling to simultaneous inhibit XIAP and cIAP1/2. AZD5582 monotherapy showed cell growth inhibition for all MM cell lines, MM1S, RPMI8226, U266 and KMS-5 and induced apoptosis. AZD5582 further showed anti-proliferation effect under the IL-6 additional condition and inhibited JAK-STAT signaling triggered by IL-6. AZD5582 combined with carfilzomib therapy showed a synergistic effect. Enhanced apoptosis was also observed in combination therapy. Synergistic effect was further observed with other conventional therapeutics. Simultaneous XIAP and cIAP1/2 inhibition by the dimeric IAPi AZD5582 is promising. This study provides a rationale of AZD5582 as a new treatment strategy in monotherapy and in combination therapy.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence has demonstrated platinum-based chemotherapy followed by maintenance therapy with a poly Adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-ribose polymerase inhibitor (olaparib) show benefits in unresectable pancreatic cancer with a germline (g)BRCA1/2 mutation. Evaluation of the germline BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation is essential for making decisions on a treatment strategy for patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer. However, the detection rates of germline BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations and efficacy of maintenance with olaparib remain undetermined, prospectively, in Japan. METHODS & RESULTS: In this prospective analysis, the rate of germline BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations and efficacy of chemotherapy were analyzed in 136 patients with pancreatic cancer who underwent BRACAnalysis® (85 patients) or FoundationOne® CDx (51 patients) between January 2020 and July 2022. A total of six patients (4.4%) had a germline BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation. Five patients were treated with modified FOLFIRINOX and one with fluorouracil and oxaliplatin. All patients continued platinum-based chemotherapy for ˃4 months and were subsequently treated with olaparib as a maintenance therapy. The response rate to platinum-based chemotherapy in the germline BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation-positive group was significantly better than that of the germline BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation-negative group (66% vs 23%, P = 0.04). All patients harbouring a germline BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation were able to switch to olaparib. The median progression-free survival using olaparib was 5.7 months (range 3.0-9.2). CONCLUSIONS: The rate of germline BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations found in patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer was comparable to those of previous studies.An analysis of germline BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations has benefits for all patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer with regard to decisions on therapeutic strategies in a clinical practice setting.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Elevated albumin-free or unbound bilirubin (UB) levels beyond the first week of life have been associated with the development of bilirubin encephalopathy in preterm infants. However, the mechanism(s) that induces this prolonged unbound bilirubinemia has remained unknown. We hypothesized that it may due to a sustained lower bilirubin-binding affinity of albumin in extremely premature infants. METHODS: Twenty-two very preterm infants born at 28-31 weeks' gestational age (GA) (VPT Group) and 21 extremely preterm infants born at 22-27 weeks' GA (EPT Group) were retrospectively studied. On days 14, 21, and 28, bilirubin-binding affinity of albumin was assessed by calculating of the UB/total bilirubin ratio, bilirubin-albumin molar ratio (BAMR), and binding affinity (Ka). RESULTS: On days 14, 21, and 28, significantly higher UB/total bilirubin ratios were found in the EPT than in the VPT Group. Although BAMRs were comparable, significantly lower Ka values on days 14, 21, and 28 were observed in the EPT than those in the VPT Group (56.1 vs. 70.9 L/µmol, p < 0.001; 55.2 vs. 74.7 L/µmol, p < 0.001; 53.0 vs. 86.5 L/µmol, p < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: EPT infants have a sustained lower bilirubin-binding affinity of albumin beyond the first week of life. IMPACT: Bilirubin encephalopathy is still reported in extremely preterm (EPT) infants. EPT infants often have prolonged unbound bilirubinemia beyond the first week of life. Sustained lower bilirubin-binding affinity of albumin, regardless of the bilirubin-albumin molar ratio (BAMR), is observed in EPT infants. BAMRs should not be used as a surrogate marker of unbound bilirubinemia, especially in EPT infants at a later postnatal period.

ABSTRACT

A 75-year-old man with a history of distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer at 48 years of age underwent abdominal computed tomography, which revealed a left hepatic lobe tumor alongside direct gastric invasion. His blood test results revealed significant increase in serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels (32240.3ng/mL). A gastroscopy revealed that the histopathological findings of the biopsy specimens of the gastric invasion area were identical to those observed in the surgical specimens of gastric cancer, which was diagnosed 27 years earlier. The evaluation of the biopsy and surgical specimens revealed AFP positivity, which confirmed the diagnosis of the late recurrence of AFP-positive gastric cancer. Herein, we presented a rare clinical case of this malignancy. Additionally, a close, long-term postoperative follow-up is warranted in patients with AFP-producing gastric cancer.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Environmental factors are important with respect to the rupture of cerebral aneurysms. However, the relationship between the gut microbiome, an environmental factor, and aneurysm rupture is unclear. Therefore, we compared the gut microbiome in patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs) and ruptured aneurysms (RAs) to identify the specific bacteria causing the rupture of cerebral aneurysms. METHODS: A multicenter, prospective case-control study was conducted over one year from 2019 to 2020. The fecal samples of patients with stable UIAs and RAs immediately after onset were collected. Their gut microbiomes were analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing. Subsequently, a phylogenetic tree was constructed, and polymerase chain reaction was performed to identify the specific species. RESULTS: A total of 28 RAs and 33 UIAs were included in this study. There was no difference in patient characteristics between RAs and UIAs: age, sex, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes status, body mass index, and smoking. No difference was observed in alpha diversity; however, beta diversity was significantly different in the unweighted UniFrac distances. At the phylum level, the relative abundance of Campylobacter in the RA group was larger than that in the UIA group. Furthermore, the gut microbiome in the RA and UIA groups exhibited significantly different taxonomies. However, Campylobacter was focused on because it is widely known as pathogenic among these bacteria. Then, a phylogenetic tree of operational taxonomic units related to Campylobacter was constructed and 4 species were identified. Polymerase chain reaction for these species identified that the abundance of the genus Campylobacter and Campylobacter ureolyticus was significantly higher in the RA group. CONCLUSIONS: The gut microbiome profile of patients with stable UIAs and RAs were significantly different. The genus Campylobacter and Campylobacter ureolyticus may be associated with the rupture of cerebral aneurysms.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To report 9 new cases of non-cavernous sinus dural arteriovenous fistulas (NCS-DAVFs) that closed spontaneously and systematically review reports of other cases in the literature. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 9 cases from 2 institutions of NCS-DAVFs that closed spontaneously. Using PubMed and Scopus in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, we systematically reviewed English language articles about NCS-DAVFs showing spontaneous closure. RESULTS: Review of the cases from 2 institutions identified 9 cases of NCS-DAVFs showing spontaneous closure in follow-up magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), and the systematic review of the literature yielded an additional 38 cases, which had been diagnosed by repeated arteriography. Collectively, the patients included 23 men and 24 women with a mean age of 54 years. The shunts were located in the transverse-sigmoid sinus in 24 cases (51%), anterior condylar confluence in 11, and other locations in 12. Based on the venous drainage pattern on arteriography, 27 cases (57%) were classified as low-risk NCS-DAVF (without cortical venous reflux) and 17 were classified as high-risk NCS-DAVF (with cortical venous reflux). Shunt closure was observed within 3 months in 17 cases (36%). Extrinsic predisposing factors for shunt closure were detected in 14 cases (30%). These included angiography in 7 cases, sinus recanalization in 4, development of sinus occlusion in 2, and sinus compression by a newly developed hematoma in 1. CONCLUSION: Spontaneous closures of NCS-DAVFs can occur for both high- and low-risk types. One-third of these closures occur within 3 months.

ABSTRACT

Reactive oxygen species (ROS), a class of highly bioactive molecules, have been widely studied in various types of cancers. ROS are considered to be normal byproducts of numerous cellular processes. Typically, cancer cells exhibit higher basal levels of ROS compared with normal cells as a result of an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants. ROS have a dual role in cell metabolism: At low to moderate levels, ROS act as signal transducers to activate cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis. In contrast, high levels of ROS cause damage to proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, membranes, and organelles, leading to cell death. Extensive studies have revealed that anticancer therapies that manipulate ROS levels, including immunotherapies, show promising in vitro as well as in vivo results. In this review, we summarize molecular mechanisms and oncogenic functions that modulate ROS levels and are useful for the development of cancer therapeutic strategies. This review also provides insights into the future development of effective agents that regulate the redox system for cancer treatment.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To elucidate the effect of deep learning-based computer-assisted detection (CAD) on the performance of different-level physicians in detecting intracranial haemorrhage using CT. METHODS: A total of 40 head CT datasets (normal, 16; haemorrhagic, 24) were evaluated by 15 physicians (5 board-certificated radiologists, 5 radiology residents, and 5 medical interns). The physicians attended 2 reading sessions without and with CAD. All physicians annotated the haemorrhagic regions with a degree of confidence, and the reading time was recorded in each case. Our CAD system was developed using 433 patients' head CT images (normal, 203; haemorrhagic, 230), and haemorrhage rates were displayed as corresponding probability heat maps using U-Net and a machine learning-based false-positive removal method. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and figure of merit (FOM) were calculated based on the annotations and confidence levels. RESULTS: In patient-based evaluation, the mean accuracy of all physicians significantly increased from 83.7 to 89.7% (p < 0.001) after using CAD. Additionally, accuracies of board-certificated radiologists, radiology residents, and interns were 92.5, 82.5, and 76.0% without CAD and 97.5, 90.5, and 81.0% with CAD, respectively. The mean FOM of all physicians increased from 0.78 to 0.82 (p = 0.004) after using CAD. The reading time was significantly lower when CAD (43 s) was used than when it was not (68 s, p < 0.001) for all physicians. CONCLUSION: The CAD system developed using deep learning significantly improved the diagnostic performance and reduced the reading time among all physicians in detecting intracranial haemorrhage.

ABSTRACT

Quantum chemistry studies of biradical systems are challenging due to the required multiconfigurational nature of the wavefunction. In this work, Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) is used to compute the energy profile for the lithium superoxide dimer rearrangement, involving biradical species, on quantum simulators and devices. Considering that current quantum devices can only handle limited number of qubits, we present guidelines for selecting an appropriate active space to perform computations on chemical systems that require many qubits. We show that with VQE performed with a quantum simulator reproduces results obtained with full-configuration interaction (Full CI) for the chosen active space. However, results deviate from exact values by about 39 mHa for calculations on a quantum device. This deviation can be improved to about 4 mHa using the readout mitigation approach and can be further improved to 2 mHa, approaching chemical accuracy, using the state tomography technique to purify the calculated quantum state.

ABSTRACT

Traumatic cardiac rupture is mostly accompanied by tamponade and/or hemopericardium. We experienced a rare case of traumatic right atrial rupture with left hemothorax, but without hemopericardium. A 36-year-old male had a traffic accident, and was transported to our hospital. He was in a state of shock caused by massive hemothorax. He underwent emergency operation through median sternotomy. No blood was seen in the pericardium nor injury of any major vessels or lungs. When the heart was exposed, massive bleeding occurred. A tear of 30 mm in length was found in the right atrium at the junction of the superior vena cava. The tear was repaired under cardiopulumonary bypass. Even after surgery, however, he remained unconscious.

ABSTRACT

A 72-year-old man was diagnosed with tumors outside of the stomach and mesentery of the small intestine on abdominal computed tomography. Histopathological examination of an endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy specimen confirmed the diagnosis of lymph node metastasis of a neuroendocrine tumor (NET). Gastroscopy, colonoscopy, small bowel capsule endoscopy, somatostatin receptor scintigraphy, and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography were performed. However, the primary lesion could not be diagnosed. The patient underwent surgery, and an ileal submucosal tumor, which was not identified preoperatively in addition to the aforementioned abdominal tumors, was detected. All tumors were diagnosed as NET, and the ileal tumor was considered the primary lesion. The patient has shown no recurrence postoperatively. The current study presents a case of an ileal NET with lymph node metastases in a patient in whom the primary lesion remained preoperatively undiagnosed.

This paper proposes a novel analogue front end (AFE) that has three features: voltage-dependent input impedance, bandpass amplification, and stray capacitance reduction. With a view to applying the AFE to capacitive biopotential measurements (CBMs), the three features were investigated separately in a schematic and mathematical manner. Capacitive electrocardiogram (cECG) or capacitive electromyogram (cEMG) measurements using the AFE were performed in low-humidity conditions (below 35% relative humidity) for a total of seven human subjects. Performance evaluation of the AFE revealed the following: (1) the proposed AFE in cECG measurement with 1.70-mm thick clothing reduced the baseline recovery time and root mean square voltage of respiratory interference in subjects with healthy-weight body mass index (BMI), and increased R-wave amplitude for overweight-BMI subjects; and (2) the proposed AFE in cEMG measurement of biceps brachii muscle yielded stable electromyographic waveforms without the marked DC component for all subjects and a significant (p < 0.01) increase in the signal-to-noise ratio. These results indicate that the proposed AFE can provide a feasible balance between sensitivity and stability in CBMs, and it could be a versatile replacement for the conventional voltage follower used in CBMs.

The glucose oxidase-peroxidase (GOD-POD) method used to measure serum unbound bilirubin (UB) suffers from direct bilirubin (DB) interference. Using a bilirubin-inducible fluorescent protein from eel muscle (UnaG), a novel GOD-POD-UnaG method for measuring UB was developed. Newborn sera with an indirect bilirubin/albumin (iDB/A) molar ratio of <0.5 were classified into four groups of DB/total serum bilirubin (TB) ratios (<5%, 5-10%, 10-20%, and ≥20%), and the correlation between the UB levels and iDB/A ratio was examined. Linear regression analysis was performed to compare UB values from both methods with the iDB/A ratio from 38 sera samples with DB/TB ratio <5% and 11 samples with DB/TB ratio ≥5%. The correlation coefficient (r) between UB values and the iDB/A ratio for the GOD-POD method was 0.8096 (DB/TB ratio <5%, n = 239), 0.7265 (5-10%, n = 29), 0.7165 (10-20%, n = 17), and 0.4816 (≥20%, n = 16). UB values using the GOD-POD-UnaG method highly correlated with the iDB/A ratio in both <5% and ≥5% DB/TB ratio sera (r = 0.887 and 0.806, respectively), whereas a low correlation (r = 0.428) occurred for ≥5% DB/TB ratio sera using the GOD-POD method. Our GOD-POD-UnaG method can measure UB levels regardless of the presence of DB.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recent studies have demonstrated that endovascular reperfusion therapy improves clinical outcomes at 90 days after ischemic stroke. However, the effects on long-term outcomes are not well known. We hypothesized that successful reperfusion might be associated with long-term improvement beyond 90 days after endovascular therapy. To assess the long-term effects beyond 90 days, we analyzed the association of successful reperfusion with a temporal change in modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score from 90 days to 1 year after endovascular therapy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a database of consecutive patients with acute ischemic stroke who received endovascular therapy between April 2006 and March 2016 at 4 centers. We compared the incidences of improvement and deterioration in patients with successful reperfusion (i.e., modified thrombolysis in cerebral infarction score of 2b or 3) with those in patients with unsuccessful reperfusion. We defined improvement and deterioration as decrease and increase on the mRS score by 1 point or more from 90 days to 1 year after endovascular therapy respectively. RESULTS: A total of 268 patients were included in the current study. The rate of patients with improvement tended to be higher in patients with successful reperfusion than in patients with unsuccessful reperfusion (20% [34/167 patients] vs. 12% [12/101], p = 0.07). The rate of patients with deterioration was lower in patients with successful reperfusion than in patients with unsuccessful reperfusion (25% [42/167] vs. 42% [42/101], p < 0.01). After adjustment for confounders, successful reperfusion was associated with improvement (adjusted OR 2.65; 95% CI 1.23-5.73; p < 0.05) and deterioration (adjusted OR 0.33; 95% CI 0.18-0.62; p < 0.01), independent of the 90-day mRS score. CONCLUSIONS: Successful reperfusion has further beneficial legacy effects on long-term outcomes beyond 90 days after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) monitoring has been widely used to screen for hyperbilirubinemia. TcB measured using the recently developed BiliCare™ system, however, has not been fully evaluated. METHODS: One hundred and seven TcB measurements were obtained from 82 Japanese newborns ≥35 weeks' gestational age within 2 weeks after birth. Measurements were taken at the scaphoid fossa, conchal cavity, and lobe of the ear using BiliCare. BiliCare TcB were compared with total serum bilirubin (TB) and TcB obtained using another bilirubinometer (JM-105™). RESULTS: Transcutaneous bilirubin measured at all three sites significantly correlated with TB (r = 0.91, 0.93, and 0.93 at the scaphoid fossa, conchal cavity, and lobe, respectively). The mean differences were 0.1, -0.3, and 3.6 at the scaphoid fossa, conchal cavity, and lobe, respectively. BiliCare TcB at the scaphoid fossa significantly correlated with that using the JM-105 (r = 0.91). The mean difference was 0.0. BiliCare, however, produced a significantly higher and lower TcB than the JM-105 for TB <7 and ≥15 mg/dL, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Transcutaneous bilirubin measurements taken at the scaphoid fossa or conchal cavity using BiliCare were more reliable than those at the earlobe. BiliCare TcB differed from those of the JM-105, for TB <7 or ≥15 mg/dL.

BACKGROUND: In neuroendovascular therapy, the effect of arterial stiffness on postprocedural cerebral thromboembolism is unknown. In this observational study, we examined the relationship between cerebral thromboembolism after carotid artery stenting and arterial stiffness. METHODS: From April 2015 to February 2017, we enrolled consecutive patients undergoing scheduled carotid artery stenting in our institution. In all patients, preprocedural brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity was used to assess arterial stiffness, whereas the number of new cerebral ischemic lesions on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging was assessed after treatment. We also analyzed patient data and details of procedures in patients with carotid artery stenting. RESULTS: Twenty-one patients completed the study. The mean brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity was 1879 cm/s. There was no association of cerebral thromboembolisms with age, unstable plaque, protection device, or type of stent. However, the brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity was an independent predictor of cerebral thromboembolisms (P = .0017). CONCLUSIONS: Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity is predictive of silent cerebral embolisms on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging after carotid artery stenting.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To assess the accuracy of transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) measurements at 5 different body sites in Japanese very low birthweight (VLBW) infants and to determine a cut-off value of TcB to detect total serum/plasma bilirubin (TB) levels ≥10 mg/dL (171 µM). STUDY DESIGN: In a prospective multicenter study, 85 Japanese VLBW infants were enrolled from 5 neonatal intensive care units during the study period. A total of 383 blood samples from infants not receiving phototherapy or ≥24 hours postphototherapy were analyzed. TcB was measured at the forehead, sternum, upper back, lower abdomen, and waist within 1 hour of blood collection. Linear regression analysis and Bland-Altman plots were used to compare TcB values at each site with TB levels. The TcB cut-off value for detecting TB ≥10 mg/dL was determined by receiver operating characteristics curve analysis. RESULTS: TcB significantly correlated with TB, but the coefficient of determination varied among the sites (forehead: 0.5294, sternum: 0.6488, upper back: 0.6321, lower abdomen: 0.5430, waist: 0.7396). At a TcB value ≥8, the sensitivity was 100% at the sternum and upper back, 85% at the waist, 84% at the forehead, and 64% at the lower abdomen to detect TB ≥10 mg/dL. CONCLUSIONS: In Japanese VLBW infants, the accuracy of TcB measurements varies according to body site. TcB ≥8 on the sternum or upper back is more reliable than that on the forehead, lower abdomen, or waist to detect TB levels ≥10 mg/dL.

ABSTRACT

A 12-kDa protein with redox-active dithiol in the active site -Cys-Gly-Pro-Cys-, human thioredoxin 1 (TRX) has demonstrated an excellent anti-inflammatory effect in various animal models. TRX is induced by various oxidative stress factors, including ultraviolet rays, radiation, oxidation, viral infections, ischemia reperfusion and anticancer agents, and are involved in the pathogenesis and progression of various diseases. We have demonstrated that systemic administration and transgenic overexpression of TRX is effective in a wide variety of in vivo inflammatory disease models, such as viral pneumonia, acute lung injury, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, indomethacin-induced gastric injury, and dermatitis. Our recent studies indicate that topically applied TRX prevents skin inflammation via the inhibition of local formation of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. These indicate that the activation of inflammasome in skin and mucosa may be regulated by TRX. These suggest that application of TRX may be useful for the treatment of various skin and mucosal inflammatory disorders. Based on these results, we are conducting clinical studies to develop human recombinant thioredoxin 1 (rhTRX) pharmaceuticals. We have also developed substances that increase the expression of TRX in the body (TRX-inducing substances) in vegetables and other plant ingredients, and we are also developing skin-care products and functional foods that take advantage of the anti-inflammation and anti-allergic action of TRX.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the clinical outcomes of malignant middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction (MMI) and determined an infarcted brain volume (BV) threshold value for accurate MMI prediction in elderly patients. METHODS: We analyzed 69 consecutive patients (mean, 75.6 ± 11.7) with internal carotid artery or MCA infarction within 48 hours from onset. Diffusion-weighted high-intensity volume (DHV) and BV were measured in all patients. The percentage of DHV within BV (DHV/BV ratio) was calculated to standardize the DHV difference for each individual BV. Patients were stratified based upon their MMI status and age, compared with the following: (1) MMI versus non-MMI groups and (2) age ≥75 years group versus age <75 years group, based on DHV values, DHV/BV ratio, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores on admission, and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores at 3 months after onset. RESULTS: The MMI group (n = 14) showed significantly larger DHV values (P < .001), larger DHV/BV ratios (P < .001), lower GCS scores on admission (P < .01), and higher mRS scores at 3 months (P < .001) than the non-MMI group. The DHV threshold value predicting MMI was 102 cm(3) (sensitivity 85%, specificity 91%, P < .01) and DHV/BV threshold ratio was 7.8% (sensitivity 86%, specificity 87%, P < .01). Both the age ≥75 years group and the age <75 years group with MMI showed equally poor outcomes (mRS 5.7 ± .7 versus 5.3 ± 1.3). CONCLUSIONS: DHV and DHV/BV can provide reliable information for MMI prediction in elderly patients.
