ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To compare and investigate the effects of intraoral ageing on the thickness of one group of directly printed and two groups of thermoformed aligners on the labial surface of maxillary central incisors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six groups (12 samples per group) were included in this prospective in vivo experiment. Groups DP-Clin, INV-Clin and CA-Clin consisted of directly printed (Tera Harz TC-85 DAC resin), thermoformed (Invisalign, PU based polymer) and in house thermoformed (CA-Pro, PET-G based polymer) aligners, retrieved after 1 week of intraoral service. Groups DP-Ctr, INV-Ctr and CA-Ctr included unused aligners samples. Thickness measurements were conducted using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Data that underwent log-10 transformation was analysed by multiple linear regression analysis (p < .05). RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were found between the materials in both Clin and Ctr categories (p < .001). Group DP had the highest thickness among the groups and the least thickness was observed in the CA group (p < .001). However, intraoral ageing did not significantly affect the aligner thickness of any groups. CONCLUSIONS: Both thermoforming and direct printing of clear aligners led to thickness deviations in terms of increase for printed aligners and decrease for thermoformed aligners. Intraoral ageing did not affect the aligner thickness in any of the groups.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the position of the mandibular lingula (ML) in adult patients (aged between 18 and 35 years old) with different skeletal and growth patterns using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SETTING: Dentistry department of University. SUBJECTS: Subjects comprised CBCT images of 150 adult patients, including 300 rami. METHODS AND MATERIALS: In total, 150 CBCT aged between 18 and 35 were selected and divided into three main groups of 50 samples based on their skeletal relationships (classes I, II and III). Patients were subdivided based on their growth pattern (vertical vs. horizontal), resulting in 25 samples per subgroup. Distances between the mandibular lingula and occlusal plane (ML-OP), sigmoid notch (ML-SN), external oblique ridge (ML-EOR), internal oblique ridge (ML-IOR), posterior border of the ramus (ML-PBR), inferior border of the ramus (ML-IBR), and horizontal and vertical distances to the mandibular foramen (ML-hMF and ML-vMF). One-way ANOVA variance analysis was employed to compare different angle classifications, and Bonferroni analysis was used for multiple comparisons. The Student's t-test was also used to compare growth patterns within each main group and genders within the subgroup. RESULTS: The study revealed statistically significant differences in the position of the mandibular lingula between different angle classifications, growth patterns, and genders. Class II samples showed a more anterior position of the ML, whereas Class III samples displayed a more posterior position of the ML. Patients with horizontal growth patterns and Angle Class III had a more posteriorly positioned ML. Gender differences were observed, particularly in Class I and Class III classifications, suggesting that gender may influence the variability of ML position in these specific classifications. CONCLUSION: The position of the mandibular lingula showed high variability among individuals with different angle classifications, growth patterns and genders.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a quite common and bothersome disorder that results in a perceived sound or noise, without an external origin, often causing notable psychological distress. Some interconnections between tinnitus, bodily pain perception, and psychological well-being were previously reported, thus the relationships between tinnitus and temporomandibular joint (TMJ)-related muscle issues, resulting in somatosensory tinnitus, must be deeply investigated. This study aims to assess the prevalence of tinnitus in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and to examine the correlation between tinnitus and scales assessing the severity of TMD as well as psychological-related parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 37 adults with TMD symptoms were enrolled. Diagnostic data were collected using the Axis II of the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) and the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) questionnaire. Statistical analysis included descriptive assessments and significance was set at p < .05. RESULTS: Individuals with tinnitus and TMD reported a significantly higher number of body pain areas, indicating a link between tinnitus and increased bodily pain perception. Tinnitus did not significantly impact TMJ-related functions. Significantly higher levels of psychological distress were observed in individuals with tinnitus, as evidenced by elevated scores in depression, generalised anxiety and somatic symptoms. CONCLUSION: Tinnitus is a complex condition with significant effects on health and well-being, requiring an interdisciplinary approach for effective evaluation and care. The study provides deep insights into the prevalence of tinnitus in TMD patients, underscoring the need for comprehensive treatment strategies addressing both TMD and tinnitus.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess if the dental follicle volume of palatally impacted canines (PICs) affects the relative root position of the adjacent lateral incisors (LIs) and first premolars (FPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study of 49 patients with unilaterally PICs with dental follicles who had CBCT imaging previously taken. Four orthodontic centers in different countries provided the sample. A mean difference of 5° between the angular measurements (mesiodistal tip, buccolingual inclination, or mesiodistal rotation) of the LI and FP adjacent to the PIC and the controls was considered clinically relevant. A value of 0.05 was set for significance level and a power of 80%. The minimum sample size was determined to be 26 patients. These patients were further assigned to an LI sample (n = 49) and an FP sample (n = 23), dependent on the direct contact of the dental follicle to that adjacent tooth. A manual segmentation technique was used to obtain the volumetric measurements of the dental follicle. Angular measurements of adjacent teeth were then compared to the contralateral nonimpacted side, which acted as the control. A multivariant regression analysis was performed using IBM SPSS software, and statistical significance was set at α = 0.05. RESULTS: Adequate intra-rater reliability was accomplished. The multivariant regression analysis implied that there is no difference in the mean change in the tip, torque, and rotation of the LI and FP between the impacted and control sides when dental follicle volumes are considered (P = .509 for the LI sample and P = .804 for the FP sample). LIMITATIONS: CBCT imaging of dental follicle border delimitations, partial volume effect, and scattering are limitations. This is a convenience sample where the FP subsample is small. CONCLUSION: The dental follicle volume of the PICs does not seem to influence the relative position of the adjacent LI and FP mesiodistal tip, buccolingual inclination, and mesiodistal rotation. Early intervention could have been suggested to avoid certain malocclusion traits if significant displacements were demonstrated.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate mastication in a group of patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) with a control group, by means of the prevalence of reverse chewing cycles (RCCs). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included a group of patients (N = 32; F = 24; M = 8; mean age ± SD = 14 ± 3 years) with a confirmed diagnosis of AIS and a group of control subjects (N = 32; F = 24; M = 8; mean age ± SD = 13 ± 6 years) without spinal disorders. Mastication was recorded with both a hard and a soft bolus, following a standardized protocol, and the prevalence of RCCs was compared between the groups. RESULTS: The prevalence of RCCs was significantly higher in the AIS group, with both a soft and a hard bolus, compared to the control group (P < .001). CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that the presence of AIS influences mastication, one of the main functions of the stomatognathic system. A multidisciplinary approach to these patients may be relevant in providing the best possible treatment outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this systematic review were to evaluate the correlation between Ultrasound (US) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in patients with JIA and to investigate the association with Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022312734). Databases Medline, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Scopus, Web of Science, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature were searched. Eligibility criteria were patients with JIA subjected to diagnostic evaluation using US and MRI. No language restrictions were applied. After duplicate study selection, data extraction and risk of bias assessment according to Cochrane were conducted. Data extraction of patients was conducted by two independent authors. RESULTS: Five observational studies were included with 217 participants (153 females and 64 males; mean age 11.3 years). The quality of the studies was overall satisfactory. The correlation between US and MRI in children with JIA was 'moderate' in acute arthritis while the chronic arthritis correlated positively in two studies. CONCLUSIONS: Even if MRI remains the more accurate imaging modality for the detection of TMJ of patients with JIA, US may be useful to early detect pathological conditions and to address the patient with JIA and putative TMJ involvement to a more accurate diagnosis with MRI and consequent appropriate treatment management. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: MRI should be deemed necessary only secondary to less-invasive assessments with US just to confirm the diagnosis or to increase sensitivity, accuracy of positive predictive values detected.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Wearing protective face masks has been one of the indispensable measures to prevent droplets and aerosol particles transmission during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. OBJECTIVES: This observational cross-sectional survey investigated the different types and modalities of protective mask wearing and the possible association with referred signs of temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain by respondents. METHODS: An online questionnaire was developed, calibrated and administered anonymously to subjects with an age of ≥18 years. It consisted of different sections: demographics, type and wearing modalities of the protective masks, pain in the preauricular area, noise at the temporomandibular joints and headache. Statistical analysis was performed using statistical software STATA. RESULTS: The questionnaire received 665 replies mainly from participants aged between 18 and 30 years (315 males and 350 females). The healthcare professionals were 37% of participants, 21.2% of them were dentists. The Filtering Facepiece 2 or 3 (FFP2/FFP3) mask was used by 334 subjects (50.3%), and 578 (87%) wore the mask with two elastics behind the ears. Pain while wearing the mask was referred by 400 participants, and 36.8% of them referred pain with a consecutive use of more than 4 h (p = .042). 92.2% of participants did not report any preauricular noise. Headache associated with the FFP2/FFP3 was referred by 57.7% of subjects (p = .033). CONCLUSION: This survey highlighted the increased referred the presence of discomfort in the preauricular area and headache possibly associated with a prolonged use of protective face masks for more than 4 h during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Labiopalatal impacted canines (L-PICs) occur when the canines lie between central and lateral incisors, with their tip palatal to the central incisor and part of their crown labial to the lateral incisor. Because of their unusual position, they are often misdiagnosed, and their orthodontic resolution fails. This study aims to provide clinicians with pathognomonic features for early and accurate positional diagnosis of L-PICs. METHODS: The L-PIC sample included 21 subjects with full diagnostic records. The control group of normally erupted canines was taken from a previous study. Clinical photographs, 2-dimensional radiographs, and cone-beam computed tomography were used to evaluate the positions of the adjacent incisors and first premolars, the canine incisor index, and the mesiodistal width of the lateral vs central incisors. RESULTS: Central incisors adjacent to L-PICs showed significant mesial root angulation, labial root inclination, and mesiolabial crown rotation, whereas lateral incisors presented significant distal root angulation, palatal root inclination, and mesiolabial crown rotation, in comparison to controls. The roots of the central and lateral incisors were divergent, in contrast to the controls, in which they were slightly convergent. The first premolar positions were not affected. The mean canine incisor index was significantly bigger in L-PICs vs the controls, suggesting a palatal canine. The lateral incisor widths were similar between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides the orthodontist with evidence-based clinical and radiographic red flags for diagnosing L-PIC, which may allow timely initiation of orthodontic treatment and correct planning of mechanotherapy.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The study's objective was to assess the accuracy (trueness and precision) of orthodontic models obtained from crowded and spaced dentition finalized for the production of clear aligners. Four 3D printers featuring different technologies and market segments were used for this purpose. METHODS: Two digital master models were obtained from two patients featuring respectively crowded dentition (CM group) and diastema/edentulous spaces (DEM group). The 3D printers tested were: Form 3B (SLA technology, medium-professional segment), Vector 3SP (SLA technology, industrial segment), Asiga Pro 4K65 (DLP technology, high-professional segment), and Anycubic Photon M3 (LCD technology, entry-level segment). Each 3D printed model was scanned and superimposed onto the reference master model and digital deviation analysis was performed to assess the trueness and precision calculated as root mean square (RMS). All data were statistically examined to obtain intra-group and inter-groups comparisons(p 0.05). RESULTS: In both CM and DEM groups, SLA 3D printers (Vector 3SP and Form 3B) showed lower trueness error compared to DLP/LCD technologies (Asiga Pro 4K65, Anycubic Photon M3) (p < 0.001). In general, the entry-level printer (Anycubic Photon M3) showed the greatest trueness error (p < 0.001). Comparing CM and DEM models generated with the same 3D printer, statistically significant differences were found only for Asiga Pro 4k65 and Anycubic Photon M3 printers (p > 0.05). Concerning data of precision, the DLP technology (Asiga Pro 4k65) showed lower error compared to the other 3D printers tested. The trueness and precision errors were within the accepted clinical error for clear aligner manufacturing (< 0.25 mm), with the entry-level 3D printer nearly reaching this value. CONCLUSIONS: The accuracy of orthodontic models generated for clear aligners can be affected by different 3D printer technologies and anatomical characteristics of dental arches.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of mandibular canine impaction and/ or transmigration is a rare clinical entity but diagnosis and treatment planning is of clinical significance. The associated etiological factors and the clinical guidelines for the management are still not clear. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the available data to report the prevalence and identify the etiological factors, clinical features, and various treatment outcomes in patients with mandibular canine impaction and/or transmigration. METHODS: The review protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021222566) and was conducted and reported according to the PRISMA and Cochrane Handbook / Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. A computerized search of studies published up to April 30, 2023, was conducted using the following databases: Medline, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Scopus, Web of Science, and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature. A manual search of the reference and citation lists of eligible articles and existing systematic reviews for any additions were also conducted. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale quality assessment tool was used to assess the studies' quality. RESULTS: After removing 6 duplicates, 3700 articles were identified. For the final analysis, 19 studies published between 1985 and 2023 met all the eligibility criteria and were included. A total of 7 studies presented as good and 12 studies presented as satisfactory. Patients were screened in ten studies and diagnostic records from archives were retrieved in nine studies. The total number of diagnostic records screened was 138.394, and the total number of patients from the included studies was 43.127. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the findings from this systematic review, the prevalence of mandibular canine impaction ranged from 0.008% to 1.29% while canine transmigration from 0.12% to 0.98%. Crowding of the mandibular arch, the presence of a retained deciduous canine, and odontoma or cyst are the etiological factors more commonly associated with mandibular canine impaction and or transmigration. Surgical extraction and surgical exposure followed by orthodontic traction are the two most frequently carried out treatment modalities in the management of mandibular canine impaction and or transmigration.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this prospective cross sectional study was to evaluate the cranial structure and condylar asymmetry of adult patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) diagnosed after 25 years of age compared to a healthy adult control group. METHODS: Eighteen adult patients (57.4 ± 11.4 years) with RA were compared with a control group. Cephalometric analysis and the Habets method for the calculation of the condylar asymmetry were used. The main cephalometric data investigated were focused on the diagnosis of hyperdivergent cranial structure (NSL/ML, NL/ML), backwards rotation of the mandible (Fh/ML), short vertical ramus (Ar:Go), steep mandibular plane (ML/Oc). RESULTS: The cephalometric data considered were not significantly different in the RA vs controls except for the steepness of the occlusal plane (NL/Oc), which was steeper in the patients group (P < 0.02) and the ramus of the mandible which was greater in patients. The asymmetry of the condyles was significant (P < 0.003) and different from the control group, but that of the ramus was not. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, RA patients diagnosed after 25 years of age did not show a different pattern of growth with respect to the control group. As expected, the condyles showed a difference being asymmetrical in RA patients due to the high turnover of this joint reacting to severe systemic inflammation in conditions of continuous functional work, load and forces. This study follows a previous study with the same research plan conducted on young JIA patients who showed a different pattern of growth of the skull leading to a severe hyperdivergent cranial structure with backward rotation of the mandible; this is mainly due to the insufficient growth of the condylar site exposed to the inflammatory process during development. Unlike JIA patients, this study showed that RA patients follow an individual growth pattern not affected by inflammation, even if they show joint asymmetry.

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the segmentation accuracy of dentition testing four free-source semi-automatic software. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 20 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) were selected to perform semi-automatic segmentation of maxillary and mandibular dentition. The software tested were Invesalius, ITK-Snap, 3D Slicer and Seg3D. Each tooth model was also manually segmented (Mimics software) and set as the gold standard (GS) reference of the investigation. A specific 3D imaging technology was used to perform the superimposition between the teeth models obtained with semi-automatic software and the GS model, and to perform the surface-to-surface matching analysis. The accuracy of semi-automatic segmentation was evaluated calculating the volumetric mean differences (mean bias and limits of agreement) and the percentage of matching of the tooth models compared to the manual segmentation (GS). Qualitative assessments were performed using color-coded maps. All data were statistically analysed to perform software comparisons. RESULT: Statistically significant differences were found in the volumetric and matching percentage data (p < 0,05). Invesalius was the most accurate software for 3D rendering of the dentition with a volumetric bias (Mimics) ranging from 4,59 mm3 to 85,79 mm3; instead, ITK-SNAP showed the higher volumetric bias, ranging from 30,22 mm3 to 319,83 mm3. The dis-matched area was mainly located at the radicular region of the teeth. Volumetric data showed excellent inter-software reliability with coefficient values ranging from 0,951 to 0,997. CONCLUSIO: Different semi-automatic software algorithms could generate different patterns of inaccuracy error in the segmentation of teeth.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to describe dental treatment-related patient-reported outcomes (dPROs) while using oral appliances (OAs) to manage obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children and adults. METHODS: Available literature that assessed dPROs in children and adults with OSA managed through OAs. Any clinical studies were included without restrictions of year or country. The results were analyzed and reported using narrative text and tables accompanying a descriptive summary. RESULTS: The searches identified 1718 citations, and of these, forty-five studies were finally included. A total of 3498 adults were included in all 42 primary studies included in this review, in which all the studies presented adults as participants. The dPROs assessed were quality of life (QoL), reported side effects after OA usage, patient satisfaction, and experience with treatment, and subjective perception of occlusal changes after treatment. CONCLUSION: This scoping review suggests that dPROs are mostly investigated as a secondary outcome from major studies exploring the effects of OAs on OSA severity, and often, dPROs are not well discussed or displayed on their report. As no risk of bias or certainty level assessment was completed, findings need to be carefully considered. Although in general terms management with OAs among adults with OSA does not seem to be uncomfortable or causing major problems to their lives, some mild discomfort and endured occlusal disturbances was reported in some studies. QoL seems to improve but consistent agreement was elusive. Data does not include experiences among those that dropped OA use. No data seems to exist about dPROs in children.

ABSTRACT

Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) is a site-specific exudate deriving from the epithelium lining of the gingival sulcus. GCF analysis provides a simple and noninvasive diagnostic procedure to follow-up periodontal and bone remodeling in response to diseases or mechanical stimuli such as orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). In recent years, the use of vibrational spectroscopies such as Fourier Transform Infrared and Raman microspectroscopy and Surface-Enhanced Raman spectroscopy contributed to characterizing changes in GCF during fixed orthodontic treatment. Amide I band plays a relevant role in the analysis of these changes. The aim of this study was to investigate the spectroscopy response of Amide I depending on the OTM process duration. A model based on Gaussian-Lorentzian curves was used to analyze the infrared spectra, while only Lorentzian functions were used for Raman and SERS spectra. Changes induced by the OTM process in subcomponents of the Amide I band were determined and ascribed to secondary structure modification occurring in proteins. The vibrational spectroscopies allow us to efficiently monitor the effects of the orthodontic force application, thus gaining increasing attention as tools for individual patient personalization in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Resveratrol is a polyphenol that has been shown to possess many applications in different fields of medicine. This systematic review has drawn attention to the axis between resveratrol and human microbiota, which plays a key role in maintaining an adequate immune response that can lead to different diseases when compromised. Resveratrol can also be an asset in new technologies, such as gene therapy. PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched to find papers that matched our topic dating from 1 January 2017 up to 18 January 2022, with English-language restriction using the following Boolean keywords: ("resveratrol" AND "microbio*"). Eighteen studies were included as relevant papers matching the purpose of our investigation. Immune response, prevention of thrombotic complications, microbiota, gene therapy, and bone regeneration were retrieved as the main topics. The analyzed studies mostly involved resveratrol supplementation and its effects on human microbiota by trials in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo. The beneficial activity of resveratrol is evident by analyzing the changes in the host's genetic expression and the gastrointestinal microbial community with its administration. The possibility of identifying individual microbial families may allow to tailor therapeutic plans with targeted polyphenolic diets when associated with microbial dysbiosis, such as inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, degenerative diseases, tumors, obesity, diabetes, bone tissue regeneration, and metabolic syndrome.

ABSTRACT

The article describes the orthodontically treated case of a 25-year-old patient with skeletal and dental class III malocclusion, anterior crossbite, which caused functional and aesthetic problems, occlusal trauma, and incisor wear. Treatment with transparent aligners was proposed to meet the patient's needs, using the sequential distalization protocol. While sequential distalization is well documented for class II malocclusion treatment in maxillary arch teeth, further investigations are necessary for class III malocclusions. In fact, lower teeth movements are more complex due to mandibular bone density and the presence of the third molars, which are often extracted to perform distalization. In addition, the use of intermaxillary elastics helps control the proclination of the anterior teeth as a reaction to distalizing forces. At the end of the treatment, the patient reached molar and canine class I and positive overjet and overbite. The inclination of lower incisors and the interincisal angle have improved, resulting in aesthetic and functional enhancement.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the short-term cephalometric outcomes of the protocols modified splints, Class III elastics, chincup (SEC III) and rapid maxillary expansion and facial mask (RME/FM) for the early treatment of growing subjects with Class III dentoskeletal malocclusion. SETTINGS AND SAMPLE POPULATION: This retrospective observational study included 20 patients (11 males, nine females) treated with the modified SEC III protocol and 31 patients (16 males, 15 females) treated with the RME/FM one. The sample was evaluated before (T1, mean age 7.9 ± 1.0 years) and at the end of treatment (T2, mean age 9.0 ± 1.0 years). Statistical comparisons between the two groups were performed with independent sample t tests. RESULTS: Both the modified SEC III and the RME/FM sample groups showed significantly favourable effects in terms of maxillary advancement (SNA +1.3° and +1.5°, respectively), control of mandibular projection (SNB -0.5° and -0.8°, respectively), and intermaxillary relationships (ANB +1.8° and +2.3°, respectively; Wits +3.4 and +1.9 mm, respectively). The modified SEC III group showed a statistically significant greater control in the intermaxillary divergency considering the SN to Pal. Pl. (P < 0.006) and Pal. Pl. to Mand. Pl. angle (P < 0.002) with a difference of 2.3 mm between the two groups. LIMITATIONS: The main limitations of this study are its retrospective nature and the short-term outcomes. CONCLUSION: Early treatment of growing patients with dentoskeletal Class III disharmonies is efficient using either modified SEC III or RME/FM protocols. However, a higher vertical control is achieved with the modified SEC III.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: marijuana, the common name for cannabis sativa preparations, is one of the most consumed drug all over the world, both at therapeutical and recreational levels. With the legalization of medical uses of cannabis in many countries, and even its recreational use in most of these, the prevalence of marijuana use has markedly risen over the last decade. At the same time, there is also a higher prevalence in the health concerns related to cannabis use and abuse. Thus, it is mandatory for oral healthcare operators to know and deal with the consequences and effects of cannabis use on oral cavity health. This review will briefly summarize the components of cannabis and the endocannabinoid system, as well as the cellular and molecular mechanisms of biological cannabis action in human cells and biologic activities on tissues. We will also look into oropharyngeal tissue expression of cannabinoid receptors, together with a putative association of cannabis to several oral diseases. Therefore, this review will elaborate the basic biology and physiology of cannabinoids in human oral tissues with the aim of providing a better comprehension of the effects of its use and abuse on oral health, in order to include cannabinoid usage into dental patient health records as well as good medicinal practice. METHODS: the paper selection was performed by PubMed/Medline and EMBASE electronic databases, and reported according to the PRISMA guidelines. The scientific products were included for qualitative analysis. RESULTS: the paper search screened a total of 276 papers. After the initial screening and the eligibility assessment, a total of 32 articles were considered for the qualitative analysis. CONCLUSIONS: today, cannabis consumption has been correlated to a higher risk of gingival and periodontal disease, oral infection and cancer of the oral cavity, while the physico-chemical activity has not been completely clarified. Further investigations are necessary to evaluate a therapeutic efficacy of this class of drugs for the promising treatment of several different diseases of the salivary glands and oral diseases.

INTRODUCTION: The purposes of this study were to characterize the 3-dimensional position of teeth adjacent to impacted canines and examine whether impaction affects canine development using cone-beam computed tomography. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography images of 34 unilateral maxillary impacted canines (12 males, 22 females; mean age, 16.5 years) were collected. Twenty-one canines were palatally impacted (PIC), and 13 were buccally impacted (BIC). Angular measurements of lateral incisors (LIs), first premolars, and the impacted canines positions relative to a 3-dimensional coordinate system and canines' volume, length, and shape of the roots, were compared between the affected and contralateral control sides. The influence of canine position and severity of impaction was examined. Statistics included the paired t test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, and McNemar test. RESULTS: In the PIC group, LIs showed significant mesiobuccal rotation (-17.1°), mesial angulation (8.4°), and buccal root torque (5°) and first premolars mesiobuccal rotation (6.1°). In the BIC group, LIs displayed mesiobuccal rotation (-18°) and significant palatal root torque (-5°). The canine volumes were similar in BICs and slightly smaller in PICs. The lengths were shorter in both, but root hooks were more prevalent in BICs. The severity of impaction affected the measured variables. CONCLUSIONS: The differential position of the adjacent teeth is pathognomonic for PIC vs BIC, and impaction seems to affect canine development. The findings provide evidence-based clinical and radiographical clues for early diagnosis of canine displacement and planning the most efficient treatment strategy. In addition, they support timely orthodontic eruption before the development of the apical third of the root.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To compare the short-term outcomes of modified SEC III protocol in growing patients in relation to their compliance with the chincup, matching them with an untreated Class III control group (CG). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-four patients (mean age of 8.6 ± 1.2 years) with Class III dentoskeletal malocclusion treated with the modified SEC III protocol and divided into group 1 (G1, 18 subjects), reporting good compliance and group 2 (G2, 16 subjects) not compliant with the chincup. The records were analysed before treatment (T1) and after the orthopaedic phase (T2), with an interval period of about 1.3 ± 0.5 years. The CG consisted of 16 untreated subjects with Class III dentoskeletal malocclusion (mean age of 8.3 ± 1.4 years). The statistical comparisons among the three groups were performed with ANOVA with Tukey's post hoc tests. RESULTS: Both G1 and G2, compared with CG, presented significant improvements in the sagittal skeletal relationships (ANB +2.5° and +2.5°, Wits +4.2° and +3.0°, respectively). G1 exhibited a significant more favourable control of vertical skeletal relationships when compared to G2 (Palatal Pl.-Mandibular Pl. -2.0°) that were associated with a statistically significant reduction of the gonial angle (ArGoMe -1.7°). Limitations of the study were its retrospective nature and the lack of evaluation of the long-term outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Both groups of treated patients showed favourable sagittal skeletal improvement compared with controls. The use of chincup in patients with good compliance produced significantly greater control of the skeletal vertical dimensions compared with patients not compliant with the chincup.
