ABSTRACT

Dentofacial inflammation resulting from untreated dental caries is a serious disease that can spread to deeper tissues of the neck and face. This study aimed to analyze salivary cytokine profiles as potential biomarkers of acute odontogenic infections in children. The study group consisted of 28 children aged 3-17 years old with acute dentofacial infections (DI) and a control group (caries experience, CE) of 52 children aged 4-17 years old with uncomplicated dental caries. The cytokine profile was analyzed using the Bio-Plex Pro Human Cytokine 27-Plex kit in the saliva of children in both groups. The levels of IL-4, IL-15, FGF-2, G-CSF, and PDGF-BB were significantly increased in children with dentofacial infections compared to the control group. In contrast, the levels of other cytokines, such as IL-2, IL-7, IL-9, IL-13, GM-CSF, and IFN-γ, did not show statistically significant differences between these two groups. IL-4, IL-15, FGF-2, G-CSF, and PDGF-BB may serve as potential selective biomarkers of inflammation of the oral cavity in children. These biomarkers can be useful in identifying and monitoring the progress and treatment of bacterial infections resulting in dentofacial inflammation.

ABSTRACT

Background and objective: Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) has been the subject of research in many areas of dentistry. HBO2 seems to be a useable, additional treatment method. However, there are still no certain conclusions and clear guidelines for procedures. The aim of the study was to collect current literature assessing the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the treatment of periodontitis. Materials and Methods: The following review was performed using medical databases Medline via PubMed and Google Scholar. The review presents articles which assess the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in combination with non-surgical scaling and root planing (SRP) in patients with periodontitis as an adjunctive method to standard protocols. Results: There are potentially plausible mechanisms by which HBO2 could be beneficial. Further well-designed science research and clinical trials are needed. Due to a small body of literature, differences in methodology and observation periods the data are not sufficient for statistical analysis. Conclusion: The use of HBO2 seems to be reasonable as an adjunct method of the periodontitis treatment. However, authors of this literature review could not unambiguously state that hyperbaric oxygen therapy could be commonly recommended as a potential method of periodontitis treatment. It is essential to develop consistent protocols for the procedure and further research in this area.

ABSTRACT

The greatest challenge of modern implantology is the loss of bone tissue in esthetic region of maxilla and mandible. Significant bone changes caused for example by cysts, unerupted teeth or traumatic extraction often provoke bilateral or trilateral bone defects. Thanks to the possibility of applying demineralized dentin and dentin blocks gained from extracted teeth of the patient, it is possible to successfully regenerate bone tissue especially in the esthetic zone. AIM: The aim of the study was to present a case of a patient who underwent bone augmentation for implantation. In addition, a review of the literature illustrating the effectiveness of autogenous bone graft material derived from ground teeth in augmentation procedures was performed. A CASE REPORT: The paper presents a case of a 26-year-old man in whom bone defect was augmented with material derived from dentin blocks and partially demineralized dentin processed in the BonMaker device after extraction of the root of tooth 11. A systematic review of literature was conducted analyzing articles published between 1975 and 2020. From 80 articles, 25 were selected for this study. CONCLUSIONS: The presented case and the systematic review of literature indicate that tooth-derived bone graft material prepared from extraction can effectively restore alveolar bone defect. The results we get so far are very satisfying. Further studies should be performed to confirm the osteogenic effects and safety use of this tooth based graft material.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are considered to be one of the most common complications in operative treatment due to increased microbiological resistance. Having knowledge of the flora that most frequently cause SSIs in a given population allows for the implementation of effective empirical antibiotic therapies. Such an approach leads to a decrease in both time and costs associated with SSI treatment. The aim of this paper is to assess the most common pathogens causing SSIs in orthopedic and general surgery and to conduct a cost-minimization analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 908 isolates from 547 patients with an SSI in general surgery and 463 swabs from 267 patients with an SSI at the department of orthopedics were obtained. All patients were treated at St. John of God Hospital in Katowice from 2011 to 2016. RESULTS: The incidence rate of SSIs was 4.25% in general surgery and 2.66% in orthopedics. The most commonly isolated strains in general surgery were E. coli (24.3%), K. pneumoniae (12.5%), and P. mirabilis (4.76%). Gram-positive cocci dominated the isolates in orthopedics, with S. epidermidis and S. aureus accounting for 19.8% and 13.6%, respectively. The most cost-effective antibiotics for general surgery are currently the cephalosporins cefotaxime or ceftriaxone, either alone or in combination with amikacin, while in orthopedics the most cost-effective were trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. CONCLUSION: Empirical antibiotic therapy should be based on the current epidemiological situation of infections from both a medical and pharmacoeconomic point of view.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the corneal morphologic aspects obtained with in vivo confocal microscopy (CM) and light and electron microscopy of specimens obtained from the same patients with macular corneal dystrophy (MCD). DESIGN: Case series. PARTICIPANTS: Five consecutive patients affected by MCD undergoing penetrating keratoplasty (PK) in 1 eye. METHODS: The patients were examined with the slit-lamp, optical pachymetry, and CM before undergoing PK. The corneal buttons were processed for light, transmission, and scanning electron microscopy. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Corneal in vivo CM, corneal light, and electron microscopy. RESULTS: Confocal microscopy showed areas of altered reflectivity in basal epithelial cells, which appeared hyperreflective or completely white. In the anterior stroma, rectilinear hyperreflective areas were shown. The stroma was characterized by a granular appearance of both keratocytes and extracellular matrix. Dark striae of different length and orientation were present in the middle and posterior stroma. The corneal endothelium showed polymegethism and cells containing bright granules in their cytoplasm. The histopathologic study demonstrated areas of thickened Bowman's layer covered by an epithelium reduced in height. The Bowman's layer thickenings were due to the accumulation of free or vesiculated material of different electron density. The keratocytes showed intracytoplasmatic vesicles, whereas the extracellular matrix presented a large quantity of intercellular electron-lucent material and parallel lamellae with an undulated course. Occasional macrophages, filled with vesicles of granular-filamentous material and evident podosomes, were observed. Descemet's membrane was formed by a normal anterior banded zone and a posterior nonbanded zone of honeycombed aspect. The endothelial cells showed a large number of intracytoplasmic vesicles. CONCLUSIONS: The structural changes observed with the histopathologic methods give an account and provide an explanation for the pathologic changes demonstrated by CM in the course of MCD. This may contribute to the understanding of in vivo imaging, allowing a better, noninvasive study of the disease evolution.

ABSTRACT

Aim: Saliva contains various proteins that are important in developing inflammatory processes and their prevention. One key aspect of saliva research is the relationship between oral infections and inflammation, and the role of some salivary proteins. The Work Aims: To demonstrate which salivary cytokines can be biomarkers of acute odontogenic oral and facial infections in children. Material and Methods: The study included two groups of patients: a study group of 28 children: 7 girls and 21 boys aged 3 -17 years with acute dentofacial inflammation (DI) and a control group of 52 children: 16 girls and 36 boys aged 4-17 years with uncomplicated dental caries (CE). The levels of Interleukin-5 (IL-5), Interleukin -10 (IL-10), Interleukin-17A (IL-17A), Interleukin-12p70 (IL-12p70), Eotaxin, Rantes, Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), and Interferon gamma-induced protein 10 (IP10) in the saliva of children in DI and CE groups were compared. Statistical analysis was performed with Statistica 13. The Student's t-test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used. Results: The results show that IL-10, IL-17A, and Eotaxin showed a statistically significant increase in the DI group compared to the CE group. The significance level for IL-10 was p=0.02, for IL-17A was equal to Eotaxin and p=0.04. The other measured parameters did not differ statistically significant between the two groups. Conclusion: IL-10, IL-17A, and Eotaxin can be used as potential biomarkers for tooth-related inflammatory states of the oral cavity and face in children. These biomarkers can be useful in identifying and monitoring the presence of inflammation in the oral cavity and face.

OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to analyze the salivary cytokine profile and oxidative stress parameters as potential biomarkers of acute odontogenic infections in children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The prospective study group (DI) consisted of 28 children aged 3-17 years with acute dentofacial infections, and the control group (CG) comprised 52 children aged 4-17 years with uncomplicated dental caries. The cytokine profile was analyzed using the Bio-Plex Pro™ Human Cytokine 27-plex kit. In addition, oxidative stress parameters, such as catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), superoxide dismutase (SOD), manganese SOD (Mn-SOD), copper-zinc SOD (CuZn-SOD), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS), and malondialdehyde (MDA), in the saliva of children in both groups were compared. RESULTS: The levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6), macrophage inflammatory protein 1 alpha (MIP-1α) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were significantly increased in children with dentofacial infections as compared to CG. In contrast, the levels of other pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1ß, IL-1 receptor agonist (IL-Ra), IL-8, monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1), and MIP-1ß, did not show statistically significant differences between the 2 groups. Among the measured oxidative stress and antioxidative parameters, only CAT and GR were elevated in children with dentofacial infections as compared to controls. CONCLUSIONS: IL-6, MIP-1α, TNF-α, CAT, and GR can serve as selective biomarkers of oral cavity inflammation in children. These biomarkers can be useful in identifying and monitoring the progress and treatment of bacterial infections resulting in dentofacial inflammation.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk factors for glaucoma in patients with keratoconus following keratoplasty and to identify potential factors that could affect post-transplant complications. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the medical records of 192 keratoconus patients who underwent keratoplasty. Data on treatment history, perioperative information, tissue bank data, postoperative regimens, complications, and infections were collected and analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed to identify risk factors associated with glaucoma and transplant complications. Results: There was a 41.6% incidence of glaucoma (high IOP) (p < 0.001), with the median time to glaucoma development being 314 ± 67 days post-transplant. A significant number of patients required surgical intervention, accounting for 48.05%. Our analysis revealed a 14% graft failure rate. On univariable Cox proportional hazard analysis, the following factors demonstrated statistically significant associations with the risk of glaucoma after transplantation: donor endothelial cell density, the use of a single continuous suture type, and the surgeon (performing the surgery). For many variables, the only factor that remained significant was the surgeon. Among the factors analyzed for risks of failure post-transplantation, significant associations were observed for the donor age, the time from harvest to transplant, and the surgeon. In the multivariable analysis, donor age emerged as a significant predictor of post-transplant complications. Conclusions: Risk factors such as donor endothelial cell density, suture type, surgeon, host and donor size, and host gender were found to increase the risk of developing glaucoma post-keratoplasty. Surgeon type was identified as a significant risk factor, while donor age was predictive of post-transplant complications.

ABSTRACT

Artificial intelligence (AI) has seen significant progress in medical diagnostics, particularly in image and video analysis. This review focuses on the application of AI in analyzing in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) images for corneal diseases. The cornea, as an exposed and delicate part of the body, necessitates the precise diagnoses of various conditions. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs), a key component of deep learning, are a powerful tool for image data analysis. This review highlights AI applications in diagnosing keratitis, dry eye disease, and diabetic corneal neuropathy. It discusses the potential of AI in detecting infectious agents, analyzing corneal nerve morphology, and identifying the subtle changes in nerve fiber characteristics in diabetic corneal neuropathy. However, challenges still remain, including limited datasets, overfitting, low-quality images, and unrepresentative training datasets. This review explores augmentation techniques and the importance of feature engineering to address these challenges. Despite the progress made, challenges are still present, such as the "black-box" nature of AI models and the need for explainable AI (XAI). Expanding datasets, fostering collaborative efforts, and developing user-friendly AI tools are crucial for enhancing the acceptance and integration of AI into clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study aimed to assess changes in the morphology of the retina and cornea in patients treated and hospitalized during the acute active phase of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods: A total of 24 patients with symptomatic early COVID-19 disease and 38 healthy participants from a control group were enrolled in our study. Among them, 20 received oxygen therapy at flow rates ranging from 1-10 L, while four received high-flow intranasal oxygen therapy (HFNOT). Some patients were treated with other types of therapy, such as Remdesivir, COVID-19 convalescent plasma therapy, or Tocilizumab. In the study, we focused on the analysis of optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of the cornea and retina including corneal thickness, central retinal thickness, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and optic disc parameters. The measurements were acquired using Spectral-domain OCT REVO FC 130. Results: The analysis did not show significant changes between the examined ophthalmological parameters before and after therapy. Furthermore, there were no detected significant differences between the tested parameters of the retina and cornea in COVID-19-positive patients compared to the control group. Conclusions: No ophthalmological manifestations of COVID-19 disease were observed during the study. Taking into account the results of other publications, the lack of an unambiguous position on this topic requires further research.

Background: The number of corneal transplants is rising, with the aim to treat a spectrum of diseases ranging from dystrophies to corneal opacities caused by trauma or chemical burns. Refractive outcomes after this procedure are often impossible to predict and associated with high levels of astigmatism. However, there are many techniques that affect the reduction of astigmatism and improve the quality of life of patients. Objectives: The aim was to compare the improvement in postoperative visual acuity (logMAR) and amount of corneal astigmatism (Diopters) after corneal keratoplasty in patients who additionally underwent a surgical procedure, which affects the reduction in postoperative astigmatism, and to determine the most effective method. Search Methods and Selection Criteria: A thorough search was carried out across online electronic databases including PubMed, Embrase, Ovid MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science, using combinations containing the following phrases: postoperative astigmatism, post-keratoplasty astigmatism, anterior lamellar keratoplasty (ALK), deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), posterior lamellar keratoplasty, endothelial keratoplasty (EK), penetrating keratoplasty (PK), corneal transplant, keratoplasty, refractive surgery, kerato-refractive surgery, laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), and femtosecond LASIK. This was to determine all English-language publications that discuss refractive operations for postoperative or post-keratoplasty astigmatism. These bibliographies were searched for English-language publications published between 2010 and 2023. We proceeded to review each detected record's reference list. Data Extraction: Study characteristics such as study design, sample size, participant information, operations performed, and clinical outcomes were all extracted. Data Statistical Analyses: The Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (version 3.3.070, 2014) was used to perform the analysis. The threshold of 0.05 for p-values was considered statistically significant. All effect sizes are reported as standardized differences (Std diff) in means with a 95% confidence interval (CI) and visualized graphically as forest plots. Publication bias is presented as a funnel plot of standard error by Std diff in means. Four methods were used to evaluate the heterogeneity among the studies: Q-value, I2, chi-square (χ2), and tau-squared. Main Results: We included 21 studies that randomized 1539 eyes that underwent corneal transplantation surgery either by PKP, DALK, or DSEAK techniques. The results showed the most significant improvement in the visual acuity and significant decrease in the corneal astigmatism after laser surgery procedures, like femtosecond-assisted keratotomy after DALK and PKP and LASIK after DSEAK.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to investigate the histological differences between samples processed by different devices and to confirm safe clinical application of different dentin matrix obtained from three devices: BonMaker, Tooth Transformer, and Smart Dentin Grinder in regeneration of maxillary defects. RESEARCH DESIGN: The study involved 39 patients with two-wall or three-wall defects who underwent bone augmentation procedures in the maxilla using dentin matrix grafts from the BonMaker, Tooth Transformer, and Smart Dentin Grinder devices. Histological examination was conducted on samples obtained from patients who received each device. In this article, histological samples have been selected and are presented. RESULTS: In all patients, bone defects were successfully augmented with ground dentin matrix. The histological examination revealed no inflammation and a good connection between the bone and dentin matrix and clinically all patients were qualified for implant placement. CONCLUSIONS: After comparing the BonMaker, Tooth Transformer, and Smart Dentin Grinder devices in our practice, we concluded that all these systems have the potential for obtaining regenerative material from the patient's teeth.

Many cases of cellulitis in the head and neck region among hospitalized pediatric patients are related to odontogenic infections. C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cell (WBC) count, neutrophils to lymphocytes ratio (NLR), D-dimer, and prealbumin can be used to assess the severity of odontogenic inflammation. The aim of the study is to evaluate the biochemical parameters as a predictor factor of the severity of odontogenic cellulitis in children. This study was conducted from 2020 to 2021 on patients admitted to the Department of Pediatric Otolaryngology and Pediatric Head and Neck Surgery of the Upper Silesian Children's Health Center in Katowice. We included 40 patients aged 2−16 in the study, who were divided into two groups: research (SS-Study subject) (n = 20) and control (CS-Control subject) (n = 20). The patients underwent an interview and physical examination to assess the presence of intraoral and extraoral swelling and the presence of trismus. The patients who qualified for the study had blood taken to determine the level of CRP, WBCs, NLR, D-dimers, and prealbumin. Differences in biochemical test results in the SS and CS were statistically significant (p < 0.05). In the SS group, the mean values of biochemical parameters exceeded the clinical norm. A statistically significant positive relationship was found between CRP and extraoral swelling. The NLR correlates significantly with extraoral swelling and the length of hospitalization. D-dimer statistically correlated with trismus, extraoral swelling, and the number of anatomical spaces involved. The NLR and CRP ratio can be considered a prognostic marker of the course of infection and hospitalization time.

ABSTRACT

The most common cause of the development of odontogenic infection is untreated dental caries, which initially leads to pulpitis. If an odontogenic infection is left untreated, it will pass through the limiting bone plate and will infiltrate deeper structures. Odontogenic infections are different in adults and children. The study was conducted at the Department of Pediatric Otolaryngology and Pediatric Head and Neck Surgery of Upper Silesian Children's Health Center in Katowice in the 2020-2022. We included 27 patients aged 2-16 in the study. Patients were diagnosed with an active, acute odontogenic inflammatory process in the head and neck area. We assessed pain, trismus, extraoral and intraoral swelling and the level of CRP [C Reactive Protein], WBC [White Blood Cells], NLR [Neutrophil Lymphocyte Ratio], D-dimers and Prealbumins. The results were analyzed in terms of the location of the source of inflammation: maxilla or mandible and the type of source of infection: deciduous tooth or permanent tooth. Deciduous teeth are more often the cause of odontogenic infection in the maxilla, while permanent teeth in the mandible. Trismus, extraoral, and intraoral swelling occurred in all infections caused by permanent teeth. The CRP and NLR ratio is statistically higher in infection, which originates from permanent teeth. The mean hospitalization time was also longer for infections from permanent teeth 3.42 days than for deciduous teeth 2.2 days. The varied clinical picture of odontogenic infections in children requires periodic analyzes of statistical data related to epidemiology, etiology, and symptomatology in order to update diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease with multifactorial aetiology. The relationship between periodontal disease and systemic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, atherosclerotic, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive disorders has been the subject of many studies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on periodontal health in patients suffering from periodontitis and type 2 diabetes. The study was conducted with 14 patients. A total of 369 periodontal pockets in the study group and 431 in the control group were examined. For further analysis, the pockets were classified as moderately deep (4-5 mm) and deep (≥6 mm). All patients received standard non-surgical treatment: scaling and root planing (SRP). Additionally, a series of 30 hyperbaric chamber sessions was carried out in the study group. The following parameters were compared between groups: PD (probing depth), CAL (clinical attachment level), and BOP (bleeding on probing). The results of the study showed significantly better results in terms of PD reduction and CAL gain in the study group in comparison to the control group. Both groups showed a reduction in BOP (bleeding on probing) after treatment. The use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy seems to have considerable benefits in patients with type 2 diabetes.

In vivo corneal confocal microscopy (IVCM) allows the immediate analysis of the corneal nerve quantity and morphology. This method became, an indispensable tool for the tropism examination, as it evaluates the small fiber plexus in the cornea. The IVCM provides us with direct information on the health of the sub-basal nerve plexus and indirectly on the peripheral nerve status. It is an important tool used to investigate peripheral polyneuropathies. Small-fiber neuropathy (SFN) is a group of neurological disorders characterized by neuropathic pain symptoms and autonomic complaints due to the selective involvement of thinly myelinated Aδ-fibers and unmyelinated C-fibers. Accurate diagnosis of SFN is important as it provides a basis for etiological work-up and treatment decisions. The diagnosis of SFN is sometimes challenging as the clinical picture can be difficult to interpret and standard electromyography is normal. In cases of suspected SFN, measurement of intraepidermal nerve fiber density through a skin biopsy and/or analysis of quantitative sensory testing can enable diagnosis. The purpose of the present review is to summarize the current knowledge about corneal nerves in different SFN. Specifically, we explore the correlation between nerve density and morphology and type of SFN, disease duration, and follow-up. We will discuss the relationship between cataracts and refractive surgery and iatrogenic dry eye disease. Furthermore, these new paradigms in SFN present an opportunity for neurologists and clinical specialists in the diagnosis and monitoring the peripheral small fiber polyneuropathies.

ABSTRACT

AIM: The aim of the present study was to propose the clinical efficacy of the different dentin matrix obtained from three devices (BonMaker, Tooth Transformer, and Smart Dentin Grinder) and to show their morphological, physical, and biochemical characteristics using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The study included 70 patients who underwent bone augmentation using the BonMaker, Tooth Transformer, and Smart Dentin Grinder devices. In addition, 84 implants were placed. Furthermore, four samples, one for each device and one non-demineralized control, were analyzed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. RESULTS: In all patients, augmentation of bone defects with ground dentin matrix was successful, and implants showed correct osseointegration. The morphological organization, the chemical composition, and the presence of organic molecules in the dentin samples processed by the three different devices were demonstrated using SEM, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. CONCLUSIONS: Comparing BonMaker, Tooth Transformer, and Smart Dentin Grinder devices in our practice, we concluded that these systems, even with different structural and chemical differences of the dentin granules, have a comparable potential for obtaining regenerative material from the patient's own teeth.

ABSTRACT

Novel polymeric hydrogel scaffolds for corneal epithelium cell culturing based on blends of chitosan with some other biopolymers such as hydroxypropylcellulose, collagen and elastin crosslinked with genipin, a natural substance, were prepared. Physicochemical and biomechanical properties of these materials were determined. The in vitro cell culture experiments with corneal epithelium cells have indicated that a membrane prepared from chitosan-collagen blend (Ch-Col) provided the regular stratified growth of the epithelium cells, good surface covering and increased number of the cell layers. Ch-Col membranes are therefore the most promising material among those studied. The performance of Ch-Col membranes is comparable with that of the amniotic membrane which is currently recommended for clinical applications.

ABSTRACT

To prove the role of high-tech investigation in monitoring corneal morphological changes in patients with neurotrophic keratopathy (NK) using Keratograph 5M (K5M) and anterior segment OCT (AS-OCT), corneal healing was monitored with Keratograph 5M (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany) and AS-OCT (DRI, Triton, Topcon, Tokyo, Japan) in 13 patients (8F and 5M), aged from 24 to 93 years (67.8 ± 19) with severe NK, who were treated with Cenegermin 0.002% (20 µg/mL) (Oxervate®, Dompè, Farmaceutici Spa, Milan, Italy). The surface defects were evaluated on Keratograph 5M with ImageJ software and the corneal thickness variations were measured using DRI-Triton OCT software. Instrumental procedures were performed at baseline, and after 4 and 8 weeks of the treatment, respectively. The main outcome measures were reduction of the ulcers' area and corneal thickness recovery. The mean area of the corneal ulcers was reduced between baseline and 4 weeks examination in all patients, and at 8 weeks all ulcers were completely healed. An increase of the corneal thickness was evidenced between the baseline visit and after the 4- and 8-week follow-up, respectively. Additionally, only in collaborating subjects the In Vivo Confocal Microscopy (IVCM) was performed with HRT Rostock Cornea Module (Heidelberg Eng GmbH) to study the corneal nerves fibres. High-tech diagnostics with K5M, AS-OCT and IVCM proved useful in the assessment of corneal morphology and the healing process in patients with NK and could be extended to assess other corneal pathologies.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: The rapid development of bioengineering in recent years enables to search for new therapies involving the use of tissue cultures. The aim of this paper is to study and apply the method of keratinocytes culture of mucous membrane on amniotic membrane to cover the losses in the oral cavity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In four cases keratinocytes culture on amniotic membrane was applied and transplanted to cover antro-oral fistulas and mucosal and mandibular bone losses. RESULTS: Histopathological and immunohistochemistrical examinations of the culture were performed. Cytokeratin 14, protein 63, conexin 43 and IgG were indicated. CONCLUSION: Autologous transplants of epithelial cells on amniotic membrane are a new effective method to cover unhealed tissue losses in oral cavity with the use of modern methods of tissue engineering.
