ABSTRACT

An exciton is the bosonic quasiparticle of electron-hole pairs bound by the Coulomb interaction1. Bose-Einstein condensation of this exciton state has long been the subject of speculation in various model systems2,3, and examples have been found more recently in optical lattices and two-dimensional materials4-9. Unlike these conventional excitons formed from extended Bloch states4-9, excitonic bound states from intrinsically many-body localized states are rare. Here we show that a spin-orbit-entangled exciton state appears below the Néel temperature of 150 kelvin in NiPS3, an antiferromagnetic van der Waals material. It arises intrinsically from the archetypal many-body states of the Zhang-Rice singlet10,11, and reaches a coherent state assisted by the antiferromagnetic order. Using configuration-interaction theory, we determine the origin of the coherent excitonic excitation to be a transition from a Zhang-Rice triplet to a Zhang-Rice singlet. We combine three spectroscopic tools-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, photoluminescence and optical absorption-to characterize the exciton and to demonstrate an extremely narrow excitonic linewidth below 50 kelvin. The discovery of the spin-orbit-entangled exciton in antiferromagnetic NiPS3 introduces van der Waals magnets as a platform to study coherent many-body excitons.

ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to investigate whether the occurrence of COVID-19 brought about changes in the health behaviors and depression levels of residents in Gyeongnam in Republic of Korea, and whether the prevalence of COVID-19 was related to differences in health behaviors and depression levels among different regions. Materials and Methods: The researchers utilized raw data from the 2019-2020 Community Health Survey in Gyeongnam and conducted analyses using SPSS 25.0. The study included a total of 35,880 participants from 18 cities and counties in the Gyeongnam region (17,942 participants in 2019 and 17,938 participants in 2020). Results: The results of the comparative analysis between pre- and post-COVID-19 occurrence showed that, after the occurrence of COVID-19, the smoking cessation rate and monthly alcohol consumption rate among current smokers decreased, while the high-risk drinking rate increased. The rate of physical activity (walking) increased, but the prevalence of depression experiences and depressive symptoms also increased. Furthermore, the comparative analysis between areas with a higher number of COVID-19 cases and those with a lower number of cases revealed that areas with a higher number of cases had higher monthly alcohol consumption rates, as well as a higher prevalence of depression experiences and depressive symptoms. Conclusions: Considering that the occurrence and severity of COVID-19 had significant impacts on the health behaviors and depression levels of residents in Gyeongnam, this highlights the need for active intervention and management by the national and local governments in response to the occurrence and management of infectious diseases, including COVID-19, to address the health status and health behaviors of the local population.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Pressure ulcer (PU) is a frequent complication of hip fractures. PUs can develop at any time after a hip fracture but most appear within 2-4 days after surgery. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between hip fractures due to sarcopenia and the risk of PUs in patients with hip fracture. METHOD: Between March 2017 and March 2019, patients aged ≥65 years of age with hip fractures were included in this retrospective cohort study. PU risk assessment according to the Braden Scale was performed within the first few hours after arrival at hospital. Skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) and hand grip strength were evaluated for a diagnosis of sarcopenia. RESULTS: Of the 289 patients admitted to the study institution, 180 patients were finally enrolled in the study (129 females; 51 males). In male patients, as SMI increased, so too did the Braden Scale score, which was statistically significant (p=0.02). However, there was no statistically significant difference between SMIs and Braden Scale scores in female patients (p=0.304). In male patients, there was no statistically significant difference between hand grip strength and Braden Scale score (p=0.251). However, in female patients, as hand grip strength increased, so too did the Braden Scale score; this was also statistically significant (p=0.041). CONCLUSION: In this study, decreased muscle mass and muscle weakness in patients with hip fractures were associated with increased PU risk as measured by Braden Scale scores in both males and females.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper was to translate and validate into the Korea language and setting the Sarcopenia Quality of Life (SarQoL®) questionnaire. METHODS: The participants consisted of 450 individuals in Namgaram-2 cohort who were followed up in 2019-2020. The study participants were divided into four groups: (1) SARC-F < 4, (2) SARC-F ≥ 4 and robust grip strength, (3) SARC-F ≥ 4, low grip strength, robust muscle mass, (4) SARC-F ≥ 4, low grip strength, and low muscle mass. To assess construct validity, population with sarcopenia-associated symptoms (SARC-F ≥ 4) apart from the Korean SarQoL (SarQoL-K®) completed the Korean versions of two generic questionnaires, the Short Form-36 and the EuroQoL 5-dimension. To validate the Korean SarQoL®, we assessed its validity (discriminative power, construct validity), reliability (internal consistency, test-retest reliability), and floor/ceiling effects. RESULTS: The SarQoL-K® questionnaire was translated without major difficulties. The mean SarQoL-K scores were 72.9 (95%, CI; 71.2-74.6) in SARC-F < 4, 54.6 (95%, CI; 50.7-58.3) in SARC-F ≥ 4 and robust grip strength, 47.0 (95%, CI; 43.8-50.1) in SARC-F ≥ 4, low grip strength, robust muscle mass, 46.6 (95%, CI; 43.0-50.1) in SARC-F ≥ 4, low grip strength, and low muscle mass. The results indicated good discriminative power across each four groups (p < 0.001), high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha of 0.866), and excellent test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.977, 95% CI 0.975-0.979). No floor- or ceiling-effects were observed. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to confirm the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the SarQoL®. We demonstrated that the population with sarcopenia-associated symptoms (determined using the SARC-F questionnaire) has a lower quality of life.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of osteosarcopenia in the over 60-year-old community and to evaluate whether osteosarcopenia is associated with disability, frailty and depression. METHODS: This study was performed using the baseline data of Namgaram-2, among the 1010 surveyed subjects, 885 study subjects who were 60 years or older and had all necessary tests performed were selected. The Kaigo-Yobo checklist (frailty), World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS) and Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form-Korean (GDSSF-K) were used. The Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS 2019) were applied in this study. Osteopenia was measured using data from dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and osteopenia was diagnosed when the T-score was less than - 1.0. The study subjects were divided into four groups: the normal group, in which both sarcopenia and osteopenia were undiagnosed, osteopenia only, sarcopenia only and the osteosarcopenia group, which was diagnosed with both sarcopenia and osteopenia. RESULTS: Of the 885 subjects over 60 years old evaluated, the normal group comprised 34.0%, the only osteopenia group 33.7%, the only sarcopenia group 13.1%, and the osteosarcopenia group 19.2%. WHODAS (17.5, 95% CI: 14.8-20.1), Kaigo-Yobo (3.0, 95% CI: 2.6-3.4), and GDSSF mean score (4.6, 95% CI: 3.9-5.4) were statistically significantly higher in the osteosarcopenia group compared the other groups. Partial eta squared (ηp2) of WHODAS (0.199) and Kaigo-Yobo (0.148) values ​​according to Osteosarcopenia were large, and GDSSF (0.096) was medium CONCLUSIONS: Osteosarcopenia is a relatively common disease group in the older adults community that may cause deterioration of health outcomes. Therefore, when evaluating osteopenia or sarcopenia in the older adults, management of those in both disease groups should occur together.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between sarcopenia and extracellular water-to-total body water ratio (ECW/TBW), one of the results of bioimpedance that can be easily measured in communities, following the recent revision of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. METHODS: This study data were extracted from the baseline data of Namgaram-2. Among the surveyed subjects, 885 persons aged 60 years or older were selected as study subjects. All surveys were conducted on a one-on-one interview basis; blood tests, physical function evaluations (hand grip strength, short physical performance battery; SPPB), and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and bioimpedance were also conducted. The Asian Working Group's revised definition of sarcopenia was applied. ECW/TBW was one of the results of bioimpedance this study. RESULTS: A high ECW/TBW was 1.63 times higher in the low grip strength group than in the robust group (P = 0.017) and was 2.13 times higher in the low SPPB group compared to the robust group (P < 0.001). ECW/TBW higher than 0.391 was 2.17 times more likely to occur in sarcopenic patients compared to the robust group (P < 0.001). In addition, ECW/TBW lower than 0.391 was 3.65 times more likely to occur in severely sarcopenic patients compared to the robust group (P = 0.002). CONCLUSION: The ECW/TBW may be one of the valid research tools to evaluate the strength and physical performance of the elderly. In addition, it is expected to be one of the effective indicators for tracking physical function under newly revised sarcopenia criteria.

ABSTRACT

Noncollinear magnetic order arises for various reasons in several magnetic systems and exhibits interesting spin dynamics. Despite its ubiquitous presence, little is known of how magnons, otherwise stable quasiparticles, decay in these systems, particularly in metallic magnets. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we examine the magnetic excitation spectra in a metallic noncollinear antiferromagnet CrB_{2}, in which Cr atoms form a triangular lattice and display incommensurate magnetic order. Our data show intrinsic magnon damping and continuumlike excitations that cannot be explained by linear spin wave theory. The intrinsic magnon linewidth Γ(q,E_{q}) shows very unusual momentum dependence, which our analysis shows to originate from the combination of two-magnon decay and the Stoner continuum. By comparing the theoretical predictions with the experiments, we identify where in the momentum and energy space one of the two factors becomes more dominant. Our work constitutes a rare comprehensive study of the spin dynamics in metallic noncollinear antiferromagnets. It reveals, for the first time, definite experimental evidence of the higher-order effects in metallic antiferromagnets.

ABSTRACT

The Dementias Platform UK Data Portal is a data repository facilitating access to data for 3 370 929 individuals in 42 cohorts. The Data Portal is an end-to-end data management solution providing a secure, fully auditable, remote access environment for the analysis of cohort data. All projects utilising the data are by default collaborations with the cohort research teams generating the data. The Data Portal uses UK Secure eResearch Platform infrastructure to provide three core utilities: data discovery, access, and analysis. These are delivered using a 7 layered architecture comprising: data ingestion, data curation, platform interoperability, data discovery, access brokerage, data analysis and knowledge preservation. Automated, streamlined, and standardised procedures reduce the administrative burden for all stakeholders, particularly for requests involving multiple independent datasets, where a single request may be forwarded to multiple data controllers. Researchers are provided with their own secure 'lab' using VMware which is accessed using two factor authentication. Over the last 2 years, 160 project proposals involving 579 individual cohort data access requests were received. These were received from 268 applicants spanning 72 institutions (56 academic, 13 commercial, 3 government) in 16 countries with 84 requests involving multiple cohorts. Projects are varied including multi-modal, machine learning, and Mendelian randomisation analyses. Data access is usually free at point of use although a small number of cohorts require a data access fee.

ABSTRACT

Inflammation and trophic factors (brain-derived neurotrophic factor [BDNF], vascular endothelial growth factor, glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor, and insulin-like growth factor-1) are associated with depression in the general population. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic representative inflammatory autoimmune disease; however, the association of disease activity, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and neurotrophic factors with depression has not been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, we determined the prevalence of depression and risk factors for depression and deterioration of depressive symptoms in RA patients. In addition, we analyzed the association between disease activity, pro-inflammatory cytokines, trophic factors, and depression in RA (N = 474). Demographic and laboratory data were examined, and routine assessment of patient index data 3 (RAPID 3) and disease activity score 28-joint count C-reactive protein (DAS 28-CRP) was performed to assess disease activity of RA. Depression was measured using the Korean version of the Beck Depression Inventory-second edition (K-BDI II). A K-BDI score ≥18 was considered the cut-off for depression in accordance with a previous validation study. The serum level of pro-inflammatory cytokines and neurotrophic factors was assessed by enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay. The prevalence of depression was 32.4% in patients with RA. The severity of disease activity of RA (RAPID 3 score [OR 2.34; 95% confidence interval, CI 1.22-4.51], DAS 28-CRP [≥3.2] [OR 1.60, 95% CI 1.01-2.53]) and severity of fatigue (OR 1.26 95% CI 1.15-1.38) were associated with depression and deterioration of depressive symptoms in the multivariate analysis. Among the components of RAPID 3 and DAS 28-CRP, patient assessment for global health and abilities for daily performance were more related to depression. The level of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-alpha) was not related to depression. The level of BDNF was significantly lower in RA patients with depression and was negatively correlated with K-BDI II score. Depression was related with the level of fatigue, low expression of BDNF, and high RA disease activity, which was associated with impaired ability to perform activities of daily life. Strict control of fatigue and disease activity to improve one's capacity to perform daily life activities would be important to regulate depression. The level of BDNF might be one of the possible biomarkers to predict or monitor depression in patients with RA.

BACKGROUND: The healthy adherer effect is a phenomenon in which patients who adhere to medical therapies tend to pursue health-seeking behaviors. Although the healthy adherer effect is supposed to affect health outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease, evaluation of its presence and extent is not easy. This study aimed to assess the relationship between medication adherence and lifestyle modifications and health-related quality of life among post-acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 417 post-AMI patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Patients were recruited from 11 university hospitals from December 2015 to March 2016 in South Korea. Details regarding socio-demographic factors, six health behaviors (low-salt intake, low-fat diet and/or weight-loss diet, regular exercise, stress reduction in daily life, drinking in moderation, and smoking cessation), medication adherence using the Modified Morisky Scale (MMS), and HRQoL using the Coronary Revascularization Outcome Questionnaire (CROQ) were surveyed in a one-on-one interview. RESULTS: In the univariate logistic analysis, sex (female), age (≥70 years), MMS score (≥5), and CROQ score were associated with adherence to lifestyle modification. In the multiple logistic analysis, a high MMS score (≥5) was associated with adherence to lifestyle modification after adjusting for sex, age, marital status, education, and family income (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 11.7, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.5-91.3). After further adjusting for the CROQ score, the association between high MMS score and adherence to lifestyle modification was significant (adjusted OR = 11.5, 95% CI = 1.4-93.3). CONCLUSIONS: Adherence to medication was associated with adherence to lifestyle modification, suggesting the possible presence of the healthy adherer effect in post-AMI patients. After further adjusting for HRQoL, the association remained. To improve health outcome in post-AMI patients, early detection of patients with poor adherence to medication and lifestyle modification and motivational education programs to improve adherence are important. In addition, the healthy adherer effect should be considered in clinical research, in particular, in studies evaluating the effects of therapies on health outcomes.

AIM: This study was designed to investigate the impact of paediatric end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on parents, based on the PedsQL Family Impact Module (FIM), and the relationship to the quality of life (QOL) of paediatric ESRD patients measured by PedsQL 3.0 ESRD module. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study using Korean translations of the PedsQL FIM and the PedsQL 3.0 ESRD module. In all, 79 patients were enrolled, including 47 children receiving dialysis and 32 children who underwent renal transplant. RESULTS: FIM scores, analyzed for every category according to treatment modality, were significantly lower in haemodialysis (HD) than in peritoneal dialysis (PD) or renal transplant patients. Mother's age, duration since diagnosis of ESRD and the existence of comorbidity were variables to have significant effects on FIM scores. The correlation between total FIM and QOL scores of paediatric patients were significant, in both parent-proxy and child-self report. CONCLUSIONS: The PedsQL FIM appears to be a useful tool for the assessment of family impact on children with ESRD. Further prospective studies focused on the QOL of parents and caregivers should be performed with the goal of improving clinical outcomes for paediatric ESRD patients.

BACKGROUND: The normal morphological and functional values of orbits vary according to race, sex, and age. We measured the palpebral fissure using the marginal reflex distance (MRD1), marginal limbal distance (MLD), and vertical height of the palpebral fissure (VHPF). Unfortunately, these measurements are all one-dimensional figures that measure the distance between two points; they have limitations when it comes to measuring the three-dimensional ocular surface. Therefore, this study used the area of corneal exposure (ACE), which shows a two-dimensional area, to measure changes between the sizes of eyes according to age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted using preoperative photographs of Koreans in Daegu city, Korea, who underwent plastic surgery in our department except for eyelid surgery. We divided the subjects into eight groups, including ten males and ten females in each decade of age, from age 10 to over 80 years. A total of 160 people were recruited who were followed up for photograph analysis using Adobe Photoshop 7.0 software. RESULTS: In terms of the mean value, the ACEs were 73.3 ± 2% in male subjects and 77.1 ± 2% in female subjects, and values for female subjects were greater than those for male subjects (p < 0.05). Significant differences in ACEs were observed according to age. The peak level of growth in the ACE was reached between 20 and 29 years of age. After the 20 s, a gradual decrease was observed (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The peak level of growth in the ACE was reached between 20 and 29 years of age. The growth pattern can be classified as continuously decreasing after reaching the peak level. The data from this study are significant in that they can be used as comprehensive data for normal eyelid values according to age. BACKGROUND: Several educational intervention programs have been designed and developed to improve osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment. However, most of the prior studies focused on how educational intervention programs affected diagnosis and treatment of condition of osteoporosis. The purpose of this prospective and educational intervention study was to evaluate the changes in osteoporosis knowledge, osteoporosis self-efficacy, fall self-efficacy, physical exercise and changes in dietary pattern of calcium and vitamin D intake after osteoporosis education. METHODS: From November 1, 2015 to August 31, 2016, 271 eligible candidates (who were over 50 years old and from 23 different community centers) were recruited through an announcement made by the public office, by two health care providers. The intervention involved an individualized education program to allow for differences in antecedent educational levels regarding several aspects of osteoporosis, including osteoporosis knowledge, osteoporosis self-efficacy, awareness of self-efficacy risk factors relating to an accidental fall and nutritional education (including the importance of sufficient calcium and vitamin D intake). The researchers revisited the community centers three months after the initial visit. RESULTS: Of the 271 potential participants, 199 (73.4%; 43 men and 156 women) completed the education program and the second questionnaire. After education intervention, parameters including osteoporosis knowledge, osteoporosis self-efficacy and fall self-efficacy were improved (P < 0.0001). After education regarding percentage of calcium and vitamin D intake below recommended cut-offs, inadequate dietary calcium and vitamin D intake were decreased (P < 0.0001) from 89.4% (178/199) and 84.4% (168/199) to 79.9% (159/199) and 65.8% (131/199), respectively, at the three-month follow-up. (p = 0.038, p = 0.017). CONCLUSIONS: This prospective intervention study demonstrated that education on osteoporosis knowledge and regular exercise programs could improve osteoporosis self- efficacy, fall self-efficacy and increase dietary calcium and vitamin D intake.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical implications of frailty in chronic kidney disease patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis and chronic peritoneal dialysis. DESIGN: In this prospective study, all of the participants completed the Short Form of the Kidney Disease Quality of Life questionnaire, Korean version, to determine their frailty phenotype. We also obtained blood chemistry and demographic data at enrollment. Data regarding the history of hospitalization and death were collected during the follow-up period. SUBJECTS: We recruited 1,658 patients (1,255 maintenance hemodialysis and 403 chronic peritoneal dialysis) from multidialysis units (n = 27). We excluded patients who had been hospitalized in the previous 3 months. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Hospitalization and survival rate during study period. RESULTS: The participants' mean age was 55.2 ± 11.9 years old, and 55.2% were male. Among the participants, 34.8% were rated as frail and 45.7% as prefrail. Multivariate analysis demonstrated significant associations of frailty with age, comorbidity, disability, unemployment, higher body mass index, and a lower educational level. During the follow-up period (median 17.1 months), 608 patients (79 not frail, 250 prefrail, and 279 frail) were hospitalized, and 87 patients (10 not frail, 24 prefrail, and 53 frail) died (P < .001). Frailty was associated with hospitalization (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.80; 95% confidence interval: 1.38-2.36) and mortality (hazard ratio, 2.37, 95% confidence interval: 1.11-5.02). CONCLUSION: The frailty phenotype was common even in, prevalent end-stage renal disease patients on dialysis, and was significantly associated with higher rates of hospitalization and mortality.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate the association of various dimensions of social capital at the individual level with physical activity. We used data from community health interviews conducted in 40 sub-municipal-level administrative units with high mortality from August to October in 2010, 2011 or 2012 for health projects in South Korea. The 8800 study subjects included 220 adults from each administrative unit, who were sampled systematically using the resident registration database. The physical activity level was defined according to the intensity, duration and frequency of self-reported physical activity. Social capital indicators were assessed with measures used in other health surveys or studies. Adjusting for gender, age, marital status, educational level, occupation, food security (a proxy for socio-economic status), administrative unit and self-rated health, we calculated the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of participating in physical activity based on various measures of social capital using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Social participation in both informal and formal organizations compared with no social participation, higher generalized trust compared with lower trust and higher perceived control at both the community and individual levels compared with lower perceived control at both levels increased the odds of being physically active [AOR = 1.25 (95% CI: 1.10-1.41), 1.36 (95% CI: 1.19-1.54) and 1.31 (95% CI: 1.17-1.48), respectively]. Various social capital measures at the individual level were found to be associated with physical activity independently of each other and of confounders in communities with high mortality in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Upper blepharoplasty is indicated in Asians for double-eyelid fold creation, periorbital rejuvenation, and functional visual field improvement. This article introduces a technical classification for blepharoplasty methods and investigates approaches to evaluate its outcomes. METHODS: Of 535 patients undergoing aesthetic upper blepharoplasty in our institution in 1998-2011, 136 patients who were well followed up were retrospectively reviewed and categorized into four groups according to the techniques employed. Blepharoplasty with skin excision only was indicated for upper eyelid-skin redundancy patients with prominent double eyelids (n = 20). Blepharoplasty with skin excision and nonburied suture fixation was indicated for patients with upper lid-skin redundancy and weak double eyelids (n = 15). Blepharoplasty with skin excision and buried suture fixation was indicated for patients with upper lid-skin redundancy but no double-eyelid folds (n = 46). Finally, blepharoplasty with simultaneous ptosis correction was utilized for patients with senile or subclinical ptosis requesting upper blepharoplasty (n = 55). The mean age was 48.7 years at surgery; the mean follow-up period was 6 months. Digital photographs were used to compare changes in marginal reflex distance 1 (MRD1), percentage of the area of corneal exposure (%ACE), and brow height. RESULTS: MRD1 increased from 1.92 to 2.84 mm in the whole patient group after upper blepharoplasty; it increased the most in blepharoplasty with simultaneous ptosis correction (1.22 mm). %ACE increased from 62.1 to 76.6% (14.5%), whereas brow height decreased from 29.4 to 26.7 mm (9.2%). CONCLUSION: Upper blepharoplasty improves palpebral fissure. Numerically measured palpebral fissure changes facilitate operation outcome measurement. BACKGROUND: Prompt treatment affects prognosis and survival after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) onset. This study evaluated the awareness of early symptoms of AMI and knowledge of appropriate responses on symptom occurrence, along with related factors. METHODS: Participants' knowledge of the early symptoms of and responses to AMI onset were investigated using a random digit dialing survey. We included 9600 residents of 16 metropolitan cities and provinces in Korea. RESULTS: The proportions of respondents who were aware of early symptoms of AMI ranged from 32.9% (arm or shoulder pain) to 79.1% (chest pain and discomfort). Of the respondents, 67.0% would call an ambulance if someone showed signs of AMI, 88.7% knew ≥1 symptom, 10.9% knew all five symptoms, and 3.1% had excellent knowledge (correct identification of all five AMI symptoms, not answering "Yes" to the trap question, and correctly identifying calling an ambulance as the appropriate response when someone is exhibiting AMI symptoms). The odds ratio (OR) for having excellent knowledge was significantly higher for those who graduated college or higher (OR 3.42; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09-10.76) than for those with less than a primary school education, as well as for subjects with AMI advertisement exposure (OR 1.49; 95% CI, 1.10-2.02) and with knowledge of AMI (OR 1.63; 95% CI, 1.16-2.27). The 60- to 79-year-old group had significantly lower OR for excellent knowledge than the 20- to 39-year-old group (OR 0.53; 95% CI, 0.28-0.99). CONCLUSIONS: Awareness of AMI symptoms and the appropriate action to take after symptom onset in South Korea was poor. Therefore, educational and promotional strategies to increase the overall awareness in the general public, especially in the elderly and those with low education levels, are needed.

ABSTRACT

An investigation on free water surface wetland, which has an area of 0.23 ha and is employed to control the non-point source pollution from a watershed of 7.4 ha, was carried out to examine how the WQvr (the ratio of stormwater inflow volume to water quality volume (WQv)) affects the wetland treatment performance. As stormwater went through the wetland, TSS (total suspended solids), TCOD (total chemical oxygen demand), TN (total nitrogen) and TP (total phosphorus) were reduced by 85%, 57%, 6% and 68%, on average, respectively. Increase in the WQvr resulted in a decrease in the reduction efficiencies of TSS, TCOD and TP, but a slight increase in TN removal. WQv was identified as a useful parameter for the design of stormwater wetlands, as this volumetric design approach overcomes the variation in flow rate and pollutant concentrations with respect to time and rainfall conditions. However, the design goal of 80% TSS reduction was not accomplished as inflow water volume equal to designed WQv. On the other hand, it was found that TCOD and TP reduction could also be considered as wetland design goals together with TSS. However, TN reduction did not show any significant relationship with the WQv.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the effect of sampling duration on the performance estimate for a stormwater wetland over both rainy and dry days was evaluated for the appropriate design of sampling duration. As the cumulative percentage volume (Vp), the ratio of cumulative stormwater volume concerning time to the total stormwater volume, varied between 60 and 100%, generally, the inflow total suspended solids, turbidity and total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) event mean concentrations (EMCs) did not vary significantly, whereas the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) EMCs were relatively stable. Compared to the inflow, the corresponding outflow EMCs changed much less as Vp changed. And these variations both from inflow and outflow EMCs did not result in significant changes in the removal efficiencies. The investigation during the dry days between two consecutive storm events showed that outflow pollutants did not change to a considerable extent after 1 day of the previous rainfall event. This study identifies the possibility of shortening the rainy sampling duration, because the performance of stormwater wetlands is usually estimated based on removal efficiencies rather than pollutant concentrations. Also, the sampling during dry days should be performed at least 1 day after a rainfall event.

ABSTRACT

A laboratory study was undertaken to pursue the filter performance of a micro-filter module employing highly porous fibre media under a high filtration rate (≥1,500 m/day), faster than that of any conventional filter process. The effects of filtration rate, head loss, raw water turbidity, and filter aid chemicals on filter performance were analysed. In spite of the extremely high filtration rate, the filter achieved an attractive efficiency, reducing the raw water turbidity by over 80%. As with other filter systems, the filter aid used ((polyaluminium chloride (PAC)) greatly affected the performance of this particular fibre filter. Long-term repetitive runs were additionally carried out to confirm the reproducibility of the filter performance. Also, a comparison was carried out with other high-rate filter systems which are either being tested for use in experimental studies, or are already commercially available. This study reveals that the filter performance under a high filtration speed is still attractive especially as PAC is used. Due to the high porosity of the fibre, the filter had small head loss even though the filtration rate was high. These results ascertain that it is possible to operate the filters with high filtration rate achieving reliable treatment performance.
